    Meet AllBoss, the brainchild of Tate Uotila, who had this brilliant idea at just nine years old.     What started as a money-making venture evolved into a powerful tool for social connection. Tate discovered a newfound sense of confidence and purpose, proving that sometimes the smallest ideas can have the biggest impact. Now, after over a year of design, redesign, and preparation, AllBoss is poised to launch on Kickstarter in mid-August.

    “SnackBoss is about having fun with my friends,” says Tate. “How I use my cart is easy. I push it around the park and ask people if they would like a snack. A lot of the time me and my friends just goof around and eat our inventory.”

    Tate’s mom, Megan Uotila, quickly saw the many benefits of learning entrepreneurship but found the process of helping Tate to be difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, they created AllBoss carts. AllBoss carts are designed to make learning entrepreneurship quick, easy, and convenient.

    “Any kid can be a boss with AllBoss,” says Tate. “Even if you think you can’t, you can if you put your mind on it.”

    Today, Mentor Canada and the Canadian Association for Supported Employment (CASE) jointly released key findings from the Mapping the Mentoring Gap research initiative. The findings show that Canadian youth experiencing disabilities who had access to a formal or informal mentor while growing up reported better mental health, employment, and educational outcomes compared to those who did not have a mentor.

    “Young adults experiencing a disability who had access to mentoring during their teen years reported that mentors exerted a significant influence on their self-confidence, self-esteem, and sense of hopefulness,” says Tracy Luca-Huger, Interim Executive Director at Mentor Canada. She adds that “mentors play an important role in supporting young people’s transition to adulthood. Nearly half of respondents experiencing a disability who were mentored reported that their most meaningful mentor shaped their career aspirations. Nearly one-third reported that their mentor helped them get their first job.”

    However, approximately 70% of survey respondents who experience disabilities said they could remember a time during their childhood or adolescence when they would have wanted a mentor but did not have access to one. “Respondents with a disability were nearly three times more likely to report unmet needs in terms of accessing mentoring opportunities than respondents who do not have a disability,” stated Véronique Church-Duplessis, Director of Research and Evaluation at Mentor Canada.

    Joanna Goode, Executive Director of CASE, added that “far too many young people experiencing disabilities face barriers to accessing mentors when they want them the most.” CASE coordinates a Government of Canada-funded national mentorship program for youth and other individuals who experience disabilities. Goode emphasizes that “the research findings line up with what participants are telling us in the career development experiences we facilitate”.

    By using resources and experiences such as those provided by Mentor Canada and CASE, employers, schools, communities, mentoring programs, and decision-makers can work together to improve access to mentoring opportunities for young people experiencing disabilities.

    4 Ways to Help Special Needs Kids With Transitions

    My son is very anxious. I think even if he hadn’t been born with autism this would have been the case, as his family tree is ripe with worriers, shall we say. All that aside, over the years I’ve learned that change is hard for him, harder than for most kids. He needs a little more time to process things than other children due to some sensory processing issues very conducive with autism,  and transitioning from one activity to another has been challenging for him. He, and his father and I, have learned over the years how to help him in this regard, to make change less stressful, less unknown.

    Parents, has you experienced difficulty with transitions with your special needs children? This week is the return to routine, with many children going back to school after Spring Break and parents going back to work.  It can be challenging to get used to school structure after a week of being at home with a different kind of structure or return. Here are some tools that have helped me help my son with transitions, back to school being one of them:

     4 Ways to Help Special Needs Kids With Transitions:

    1)    Talking prep work: Talk to your child about what will be happening, one, two or a few hours in advance, depending how much notice they need before they move from one activity to another. My son used to need to know two days in advance, now one day to a few hours is fine. Of course, it also depends what we are talking about. Spring Break, we plan a few days in advance. A big family wedding and what will happen I read up to two to three weeks in advance.

    2)    Use a Social Story: Depending on how well your child communicates, a short story written in simple language describing what will be occurring. http://carolgraysocialstories.com/.  It demystifies some of the unknown and helps them have a concrete grasp of what to expect. You laminate it, or put it in a folder if they need to carry it with them, and they have the events of the day in schedule form. I put it up on the fridge to read too.

    3)    Pictograms: Yes, even stick figures work! I’m no Renoir or any kind of artist when it comes to drawing, but little diagrams to go with the story can help them have a visual to go with the story if you want to join them together. You can also print out some great ones on sites like Pinterest and use this as a tool alone too.

    4)    Tool box to handle anxiety: I have learned that giving my son tools to cope with his anxiety, tools that he chooses, is what sometimes works best too. He chose a little “kit” in three rooms in our home, squeeze toys, thera-putty, stuffed animals or figurines, his trampoline, fitness ball or rocking chair. I will gently remind him to use it when he’s feeling stressed and to use it to best articulate his feelings to himself and to me.

    I think as long as you tell your child that being anxious about change is part of being human and give them tools to learn to handle it, you and they will be able to get through many stressful transitions together successfully.

    Businesses that hire individuals with intellectual and development differences (IDDs) are the focus of an innovative new initiative launching next month in Northeast Florida. ConnectableJax.com’s inaugural Shopability Saturday event encourages Jacksonville residents to patronize – either in person or online – one of the area’s IDD-inclusive employers throughout the day on March 6.

    More than 130 such companies are featured on a searchable map, which was created by organizers of the Connectable movement – an initiative developed to highlight the region’s unique system of support for those with Autism, Down syndrome and other IDDs as well as the value these people offer. The employers featured on the Shopability Saturday map include uniquely abled individuals on their teams, whether through employment, internships, or serving as a job site in partnership with a nonprofit, said Sarah Troup, director of Connectable.

    “The Shopability map gives our community a tangible tool to identify and patronize those businesses while showing our neighbors with IDDs how much their inclusion is valued,” Troup said. “We hope this event encourages communities across the country to build on these efforts so that we can create a more inclusive workplace for all Americans with IDDs.”

    Organizers say the event is the first of its kind in the country specifically centered around businesses that hire individuals with IDDs. Participating employers include the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, Firehouse Subs, VyStar Credit Union, and more.

    Research from the Institute for Corporate Productivity shows that people with IDDs bring hard work, diversity, and value to the workplace – with 84 percent of employers reporting these employees as highly dependable and 70 percent citing that individuals with IDDs support workplace culture. Yet, National Core Indicators reports that 84 percent of individuals with IDDs did not have paid community employment in 2018. In Florida, this rate is even higher – coming in at 90 percent.

    ​The Institute of Professional Practice, Inc., a 40-year-old human services agency providing supports for people with special and educational needs in five states and headquartered in Vermont, announced today that it is changing its name to Aspire Living & Learning. 

    The agency was established in Vermont in 1981 and emerged in response to the inadequate and unjust social policies of the ’70s and ’80s when people with developmental and psychiatric disabilities left institutions and returned to their local communities. Those communities were ill-equipped to provide specialized services necessary to empower individuals and respect differences so IPPI was formed to support families, caregivers, and the individuals themselves.

    For nearly 40 years, Aspire Living & Learning has continually evolved, customizing services to the changing needs and interests of those supported by the agency. Aspire now provides programs for individuals throughout their lives, starting with early intervention for children with autism, private and public special education support, and foster care for youth, as well as employment, day and residential options for adults. Aspire Living & Learning currently provides services in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maryland.

    “Today is an important milestone,” said Lou Giramma, CEO, who took the helm in 2015. “Just as our work creates opportunities for transformation among those we serve, we too are transforming as an agency. Today, we re-emerge under a new name. I also have gotten drastically better with my social skills and I am now able to have a steady conversation with almost anyone,” said Matt Judge, who received Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy from Aspire Living & Learning for many years. “I have to give thanks to my parents and all the therapists and behavior analysts who worked with me over the years, as I would never be where I am now without them.”

    Nicole Dufour has worked with Aspire Living & Learning for 32 years as a home care provider in New Hampshire. “This name change has been a long time coming. I am so excited to be a part of today’s launch,” said Dufour. “Aspire Living & Learning’s helping people live the lives they want is the cornerstone of the new brand. The name captures who we are as a team perfectly.”

    ​LearningRx Shreveport is the first LearningRx Center in the nation and the first center of its kind in Louisiana to become a Board Certified Cognitive Center (BCCC), granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

    The BCCC designation is awarded to organizations whose staff have completed an evidence-based training and certification program focusing on autism, ADHD, anxiety, and dyslexia in school-aged learners. The Shreveport center has shown its team’s dedication to providing the best possible outcomes for everyone they work with by completing the IBCCES program.

    “Though we are proud of our results and the success our clients achieve with the help of our cognitive skills training programs, we know it’s important to hear what others in the scientific community have to say about our Brain Training Center,” said Donesa Walker of LearningRx Shreveport. “We are especially proud to be known as a Board Certified Cognitive Center because we are the best in the business and it is great to achieve the status so that others may know and come to love us as the best in the world at brain training.”

    LearningRx provides clinician-delivered cognitive training to clients who range in age from 5 to 95. Their “brain trainers” sit one-on-one with clients and use a variety of hands-on manipulatives to train cognitive skills including working and long-term memory, visual and auditory processing, reasoning skills, processing speed, and attention.

Staff at the online learning curriculum and support center for parents and children with autism have completed a training and certification program to help them ensure students with autism have the best educational outcomes.

    Brain Balance offers a personalized, drug-free program that provides answers to social, emotional, behavioral and academic development. The Boise-Eagle center has shown their commitment to providing the best possible service to everyone who walks through their doors by completing the IBCCES training and certification program, which requires that at least 80% of student-facing staff at each location complete a training and certification program that focuses on working with individuals with a variety of needs, such as anxiety, dyslexia, autism and ADHD.     ​Mesa Fire and Medical Department joins more than 60 organizations in and near Mesa, AZ, to become a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) in an effort to create a truly inclusive community. The CAC designation, granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), means that staff, firefighters  and first responders at Mesa Fire and Medical Department have received position-specific training through IBCCES to enhance their understanding and sensitivity when helping individuals with autism or other sensory sensitivities.

    “Mesa Fire and Medical Department is grateful for the opportunity to receive this training. It allows us to meet the needs of all citizens that we respond to and serve the community with CARE (Compassion. Accountability. Respect. Excellence.),” said Battalion Chief Chuck Busboom of Mesa Fire and Medical.

    Mesa Fire and Medical Department provides an all-hazard delivery of service. 

    All-hazards can be defined as: a department that provides every level of a hazard response whether it is trench rescue, hazardous materials, confined space, building collapse, rope rescue, fire extinguishment, EMS, dive rescue, swift water and vehicle extraction.

    As part of an initiative toward inclusion for residents and visitors with autism and other sensory disorders, Visit Mesa gathered community support from city and local officials, private businesses, and other partners to achieve the IBCCES designation of the first-ever Autism Certified City by IBCCES.

    Autism Action Partnership (AAP) has become a Certified Autism Center™, making it one of only two organizations in the state of Nebraska to attain that designation. The CAC designation is granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

    AAP is a public not-for-profit foundation founded by Gail Werner-Robertson and Scott Robertson. The foundation has been working to create and fund programs that fill critical gaps in Nebraska autism services since 2008. Pursuing this level of professional training and certification aligns with the Mission Statement of AAP, “To improve the quality of life of persons on the autism spectrum and their families through education, advocacy and support, thereby enabling them to be an integral part of the community.”

    AAP’s diverse programming provides critical services to students needing to improve their social skills (Circle of Friends), adults securing permanent employment (PACE), families seeking enrichment opportunities (Making Memories), professionals wanting to promote the safety of those with autism (BE SAFE, Project Lifesaver), and businesses and community venues looking to be more inclusive. The certification process involved concerted professional development to ensure a level of expertise for all staff, in providing the above services. Four AAP employees now carry credentials as Certified Autism Specialists, and one holds an Autism Certificate.

    “Autism continues to become more and more prevalent in our society, with 1 in 59 children (CDC 2018) being diagnosed. As such, it is critical for communities to advance their understanding of autism and create more inclusive practices and environments. Locally, AAP has seen an increase in the number of businesses and community members seeking education about autism and guidance on how to become more ‘sensory-friendly’. In response, AAP determined that all staff should maintain an expertise in these matters and that this expertise should be measured and verified by an external authority,” said Justin Dougherty, AAP Executive Director. “IBCCES was the obvious choice for both their in-depth training programs and worldwide recognition. We are extremely proud to have earned this certification and are confident that our collective expertise was advanced through this process.” 

    For almost 20 years IBCCESS has provided training and certification for education, healthcare, travel, law enforcement, and corporate professionals worldwide who aim to provide quality care to those with special needs. IBCCES is the only training and certification program endorsed by Autism Society and focuses on working with industry leaders to ensure professionals who work with individuals on the spectrum are trained and certified in autism and other cognitive disorders.
