    Some actors — such as Leonardo DiCaprio, for instance — spend years delivering memorable performance after memorable performance, only to be passed over continuously by the Academy. DiCaprio finally broke this cycle with his ambitious performance as frontiersman Hugh Glass in the 2015 film The Revenant, which won him the Oscar for Best Actor. While some famous actors go their whole careers without ever achieving that milestone, it doesn’t mean they aren’t deserving. Sometimes, the timing just isn’t right. Like I wouldn’t just come out and say Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father. That kind of thing needs careful preamble to ensure you don’t just blurt it out and potential-OH NO, WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?

    Anyway, if you think I have it rough, just imagine what it’s like for movie actors. They learn these closely-guarded secrets months or years before the rest of us, and then they have to keep those secrets, even as part of their jobs involves answering endless questions from the press about their work. Invariably, mistakes are made.

    Period films give us a glimpse into what life was like during a completely different era of history. Well, sort of. They may give us an idea how people lived, but since they’re movies, we need to leave room for a certain degree of artifice. Movies are designed to either entertain us, or to explore universal themes, or to provide a feast for our senses. They’re not designed to tell us the truth, and nothing but the truth.

    So, that’s why it’s not surprising to learn that some of the most popular period films ever made are full of historical inaccuracies. As with most films based on true events, creative liberties are taken to ensure the narrative flows in an effective, compelling way. But when you add the period element — think ancient civilizations, English royal society, or wars that spanned multiple years — there are even more opportunities for facts to be replaced by fiction. It could be a certain style of clothing that hadn’t been invented yet, or the inclusion of a historical figure who, by all accounts, shouldn’t have been alive during the events of the film.

    In some cases, these changes feel completely warranted. Reality is almost always messier than what’s presented to us on the big screen, and leaving out certain details results in a more satisfying end result. Other times, the inaccuracies are so glaring and obvious, they take us out of the film entirely.     As Netflix does with all of their lists of highly-watched content, they measure popularity by the amount of hours of a title viewed in its first 28 days of availability for streaming. (After that, I guess, you could watch 120 million hours of Marmaduke and it won’t make a bit of a difference.)

    By and large, the year’s biggest hits on Netflix were all about stars: Big-time Hollywood talents like Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Hart, Adam Sandler; basically people who are brands unto themselves. You see their face on the top of your Netflix account and that alone gives you some idea of what you are going to watch. Which makes sense — people turn on Netflix, they look at what comes up and they decide whether or not it’s something they think they would like.

    The list is exclusively English-language films. The most watched movies in languages other than English include Troll from Norway, All Quiet on the Western Front from Germany, Black Crab from Sweden, Through My Window from Spain, and The Takedown from France.

    Absent from the list is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which will likely pass a lot of these movies when all is said and done, but only debuted on Netflix a few days ago and thus wasn’t included on this list. (In just those first few days of release, subscribers already watched 82.1 million hours of the film.)  Also absent from the list are just about all of Netflix’s would-be awards contenders this year, including Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Bardo or the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde or the musical. They had a lot more success this year with star vehicles. Don’t be surprised to see even more of those types of films in 2023.

    It was a great year for movies — but it wasn’t necessarily a great year for movie theaters. There were some bright spots amidst the summer movie season, but there were also very lean periods where the major studios’ output slowed to a trickle, and the films that did get released failed to connect with audiences. While things were greatly improved from 2020 and 2021, if you compared 2022’s yearly box-office total ($7.1 billion as of this writing) compared to any pre-pandemic year — like 2019 and its $11.3 billion — it’s clear that theaters’ financial recovery still has a long way to go.

    The blame doesn’t fall completely on distributors, though. Plenty of outstanding 2022 films — including some of the year’s very best titles — struggled to sell tickets. Whether that’s because of the lingering effects of the pandemic, audiences’ increasing preference for streaming content, poor marketing, or a combination of all of the above, 2022 had more than its share of undeserving box-office flops.

    Hopefully this list can go some small way toward correcting that. The ten motion pictures that follow all struggled in theaters relative to their budgets or expectations. (They’re listed from highest-grossing movie to the smallest, which didn’t even clear $20,000 in theatrical release.) Some are still playing in multiplexes and arthouses, and many of the others are already available at home for streaming or rental. Wherever or however you prefer top watch them, they’re very much worth your time. And hopefully movie theaters have such a great next year that this list isn’t even possible in 2023.

    In Stan Lee’s How to Draw Superheroes, the co-creator of some of the most famous bad guys in Marvel history wrote that “there is no such thing as a villain.”

    “Each and every villain in comics, in movies, in novels — and especially in real life,” he added, “thinks of him- or herself as the good guy. The hero.” That’s probably true. But in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are many villains. True to Lee‘s perspective — which helped shaped Marvel in the first place — a fair number of them do not consider themselves to be villains. A character like Thanos truly believes that his actions, as brutal and painful as they may be, are necessary to preserve all life in the universe. (And, from a certain perspective, he might even have a point.)

To me, the “worst” Marvel baddies are not the ones who perform the most heinous activities; they’re the ones who ruin their movies with ludicrous schemes, campy acting, and clichéd backstories. (Sadly, even Stan the Man’s theory that villains think of themselves as the heroes of their own story has been used so many times now that it’s started to feel a little tired.)

    I thought so.

    Welcome to the wonderful world of strange foreign titles for American movies. Modern Hollywood films are made for a global audience, but sometimes their titles don’t translate perfectly to all markets. When that happens, familiar movies can wind up with very unfamiliar (and hilarious) names. Occasionally those names are nonsensical, but once in a while they are a drastic improvement over the original. Step Up: All In? I mean, that’s fine. But Sexy Dance 5: All in Vegas? That’s a hit! Where do I buy my ticket?

    If you search for examples of these online, the ones you find aren’t always accurate. In 1998, The New York Times published a piece on funny foreign titles for American movies. A few weeks later, the Times published a lengthy correction, acknowledging that a lot of the titles in their article were actually invented by a satirical website (like I’m Drunk and You’re a Prostitute for Leaving Las Vegas and Help! My Pretend Boyfriend Is Gay for My Best Friend’s Wedding). Almost 20 years later, both of those totally fake foreign titles routinely show up on lists that cover this topic.

    The 30 titles in our gallery are legit (although my translations may not be perfect; my German is really rusty). These movies were really sold with these titles. And with good reason; because no one in their right mind would say no to Sexy Dance 5: All in Vegas. I wish I was watching that movie right now.

    If you’re like me, you keep two calendars: One with all your various appointments, meetings, reminders, and family obligations, and then another that’s just all the movies that are coming out soon that you can’t wait to watch.

    Time flies at the movies. It feels like it’s only been a month or two since I made a list of the best movies of the year. But it’s already December once again. The arbitrary period when we stop everything we’re doing and compare all the movies released since the last arbitrary period when compared all the movies released since the last arbitrary period has begun!

    The typical format for such lists is 10 films, and I have adhered to that rule for most of my professional career. But this year I realized: No one but me and my weird self-inflicted neuroses are forcing me to pick only 10 best movies — and I saw a hell of a lot more than 10 good movies in 2022. So this year, my list contains 20 excellent films. If you want to pay attention to just the top 10, go for it! But then you will miss out on a lot of outstanding titles, some of which are already available to stream at home right now.

    Critics will often use these lists as an occasion to pontificate at length on the state of cinema; whether it was a “good year” or a “bad year,” whether cinema is “healthy” or “dying,” whether criticism is thriving or under attack. This year I feel like the fact that I couldn’t settle on just 10 films and willingly doubled the size of the list pretty much says it all.

    As 2022 comes to a close, it’s time to look back on the movies that came out this year. And while many films had exclusive theatrical releases — something we hadn’t seen in a while since the Covid pandemic — there were also plenty that were released directly on streaming platforms. Between HBO Max, Disney+, AppleTV+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Paramount+, the year was chock-full of new titles to watch from the warm, familiar comfort of our homes.     It’s worth mentioning that plenty of the films below were viewed by millions upon millions of people. That doesn’t mean, however, that they were liked.     2022 was the busiest year in the 15-year history of Marvel Studios. All told, the company released three big-screen movies — Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — three Disney+ shows — Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law — and two Disney+ one-off specials — Werewolf By Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. All told that’s about 18 hours of Marvel Cinematic Universe content in a single year. That‘s a lot! It wasn’t that long ago that Marvel sometimes released nothing in a year, and more than one new movie over the course of 12 months was considered a glut of product that was going to lead to audience fatigue.

    They weren’t all perfect (or great), but Marvel’s collective output in 2022 delivered a lot of definite highlights along the way. There were some very memorable action scenes, a couple of really wonderful surprises, and one of the most emotional sequences the company has ever produced. As we get ready for 2023 — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania! Secret Invasion! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3! — let’s take a look back at the best Marvel moments of the year… (Note that there will be a couple spoilers on our list…)

    Since its first full-length animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, arrived in 1937, Walt Disney Studios has been churning out beloved classics that have ingrained themselves into popular culture. An overwhelming majority of these movies are downright excellent, gifting us with some of the most memorable songs and characters to ever grace the silver screen. Some are marginally better than others — and of course, there are a few clunkers — but overall, Disney’s batting average for family friendly hits is remarkably high.

    When Disney joined forces with Pixar Animation Studios in the latter half of the 1990s, the bar was subsequently raised. New computer-generated animation techniques opened up the floodgates for some superb works, starting with 1995’s Toy Story all the way up to this year’s stellar Turning Red. Disney Animation Studios is also responsible for some popular entries into the Disney canon, such as Moana, Zootopia, and of course, Frozen.

    While many of Disney’s standouts receive the due credit they deserve, there are a select few that frequently get left out. Maybe their box office performance wasn’t as successful as hoped, or perhaps they just became overshadowed by more popular films. One such movie considered by many to be underrated is 2007’s Enchanted — a live-action-animation hybrid that satirizes its own fairytale cliches while also proving their worth. Despite its critical praise, it took 15 years later to get a sequel. At long last, Disenchanted finally arrived on Disney+ on November 18.     The Breakfast Club could have been released as The Lunch Bunch. Back to the Future was almost called Space Man From Pluto. For a brief second Toy Story was Toyz in the Hood.

    In cases such as these, not even a single frame of the actual movies would have been changed, just the name. And yet it’s hard to imagine something called Space Man From Pluto becomes a generational favorite in the way that Back to the Future did. On the flip side, you have to believe the reception of other movies would have been greatly enhanced if they’d only chosen a better title. (It’s been 15 years and we still want to know: What the hell is a quantum of solace?!?)

    As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. For movies, that first impression is their title. There is an art to crafting a title just as there is an art to making a movie. Below we have compiled two different lists: One featuring those motion pictures who mastered the art of the movie title, and another ranking those that did not. Take these films as valuable exemplars and as constructive criticism, respectively. Also note that we are judging the titles here, not necessarily the movies. A great movie can have a bad title and vice versa — although it much more frequently seems the case that a masterpiece has a title to match, and a stinker has an equally crummy title.
