Spend Some Time at Hatcher Gardens and Woodland Preserve

Have you enjoyed Hatcher Garden in Spartanburg, SC? Just a couple miles off of I-26 in Spartanburg, among shopping and restaurants on the busy main thoroughfare of John D. White, Sr. Blvd, is a 10-acre botanical garden and woodland preserve.

The beautiful space is full of ponds, waterfalls, wildlife, trees and gardens with a wide variety of leafy and flowering plants. Hatcher Garden is open free to the public and should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Spartanburg.

Get to Know Hatcher Garden, Spartanburg, SC

The garden began as the backyard garden of Harold and Josephine Hatcher in the late 1960s. The Hatchers converted run-down, eroded acreage behind their home into beautiful gardens, gradually opening them to the public and later officially opening Hatcher Garden. The Hatchers have since passed on, but the garden remains and is maintained by dedicated volunteers.

Visitors to Hatcher Garden will find numerous paved and mulched woodland trails covering the 10-acre spac e. The paved paths are wide and easily traversed with a stroller. Along these trails are six different ponds, many connected by a series of rocky creeks and waterfalls.

Colorful wildflower beds and a butterfly garden line the sunny paths, while large confers and shade-loving plants spread out among the woodland parts of the garden. Helpful signs along the trails point out information about the birds, trees, plants, and about the Hatchers themselves.

Things to Keep in Mind at Hatcher Gardens

Bring a picnic or a snack and enjoy the many benches, picnic tables, and gazebos.

I visited on a Wednesday morning with my 4 children, and other than the volunteers maintaining the garden, we had the paths all to ourselves to wander. My children particularly enjoyed the waterfall under Corrie’s Bridge and the little circle stone patio nearby. We spent almost 2 hours enjoying the garden.

A couple of my children are real investigators and collectors. They love to examine and collect rocks, flowers, sticks, dirt. It doesn’t really matter what. Do you know any little ones like that? It was a minor challenge to explain why we could not pick the flowers or dig for bugs in the beds.

However, it was a really wonderful opportunity to discuss appreciating and respecting the hard work of the volunteers we saw working. Without them, we couldn’t enjoy the beauty around us! If you see them when you visit, make sure to say thanks!!

Homeschool Ideas for Hatcher Garden

The gardens were not crowded at all on the morning we visited. I plan to go back with some reading material or workbooks when we need a little change of pace. You may enjoy them for an outdoor workspace, too! Or, consider some language or writing activities during and after your visit.

As you walk, choose items and ask your children to come up with adjectives to describe the things you see. When you head home, write a journal entry about one or two of your favorite pieces of the garden using descriptive words. For older students, share this review or reviews of other places from Kidding Around Greenville and have them write their own review of Hatcher Garden!

Consider bringing some insect, bird, or plant identification books on your visit. One of our favorites is The Secret Lives of Backyard Bugs, by Judy Burris and Wayne Richards. My 6 year-old received it as a gift and he truly does not leave the house without this book.

It lives in our school bag and goes pretty much wherever we go. When he sees an interesting bug he digs it out and uses the colorful photographs to find the bug in question and read the accompanying passages.

Don’t forget to grab a map at the picnic shelter to the left of the parking lot. The gardens are not so big that one could get easily lost, but the simple map provides a wonderful opportunity for students to practice their map-ready skills.

Tips for Visiting Hatcher Gardens

Here are a few pointers for your trip:

The numerous shady portions of the garden have many natural insects, including mosquitoes! We did not bring bug spray, but it would have come in handy.

When approaching the garden from I-26, pull into the second drive. The first is for school buses and handicap parking. My GPS called the drive Hughes Lane.

You’ll find a map of the garden under the picnic shelter to the left of the parking lot.

You can rent a fishing boat at the wardens’ office for a leisurely paddle or fishing. The park has an incredible 20 miles of hiking and biking trails. The park is known for its great equestrian facilities, plus more than 20 miles of equestrian trails.

Kings Mountain State Park

1277 Park Road, Blacksburg
Located just north of Spartanburg on I-85, this nearly 7,000-acre state park can be seen from the interstate. The park is part of something called the Ridgeline Trail, which connects three parks and two states. The adjacent Kings Mountain National Military Park and Crowders Mountain State Park are all connected by this 16-mile hiking trail loop. In the fall, visitors can enjoy living history demonstrations on the park’s replica 1800’s farm.

Andrew Jackson State Park

This 360-acre park is located just south of Charlotte. A living history program, museum, and regularly scheduled community events make this one of South Carolina’s popular state parks.

Originally grazing land for elk and buffalo, the mountain was spared being turned into a mine by conservationists in 1973. In addition to hikes along the Ridgeline Trail, the park offers paddling, fishing, rock climbing, and bouldering.

Sesquicentennial State Park

Just outside of Columbia, this 1,400-acre park boasts the only splash pad in the state park system. The park has a 30-acre lake and a six-mile biking trail loop.

Host to an impressive light show in May, this park is home to the synchronous firefly. These insects draw huge crowds during those few weeks. During the other 11 months of the year, there is still much to be seen by foot, canoe, or kayak in this 20,000-acre national park. Keep in mind this park is part of a flood plain that includes the Congaree River, so keeping an eye on the weather while planning to visit is important.

This park has primitive backcountry camping and campsites without running water or electricity.

Young Kids Will Love TCMU’s Spartanburg Location

Have you been to Spartanburg’s children’s museum yet? TCMU Spartanburg offers a fun and educational indoor activity geared specifically for children five years of age and under. This location of the museum is perfect for your littlest ones. With padded play areas, water play, and a new Publix mini grocery store, there’s plenty for them to explore!

About TCMU Spartanburg

Located at 130 Magnolia Street in the heart of Spartanburg’s downtown, TCMU Spartanburg is an attached two-story building with two levels of interactive exhibits to explore. The hours are from 9 am – 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday and Sunday 11 am – 5 pm.

Tickets are $8 for SC residents and $10 for Non-SC Residents. Educators, homeschool students, seniors, and military receive a discounted ticket price of $5. Members and children under the age of 6 months get in free. TCMU also participates in the Museums for All Program, which means families can gain admission for $3 per person when they present an EBT card. Advance timed-ticketing is encouraged for entry and can be purchased online.

With your museum admission, you have access ALL DAY and can come and go as needed. For example, you could go in the morning, head home for naps, and come back in the afternoon! You can also purchase a membership that allows access for your entire family for both the Greenville and Spartanburg locations.

Public parking is available off of Magnolia Street and there is also a parking garage directly across from the museum, which is reasonably priced. (Around $1 for two hours of parking.) There are also limited free spots in front of the storefronts along Magnolia.

This museum is specifically designed for children 6 and under and includes lower exhibits for smaller children and areas designed for babies.

1st floor at TCMU Spartanburg

TCMU Spartanburg has a friendly, helpful staff that will stamp your hand upon payment and entrance. This stamp allows you all-day access to the museum. The first floor has stroller parking, as well. As you walk in you will see an enclosed padded play area for smaller babies. They can scoot, crawl, and toddle to their hearts’ content. This is a shoe-free zone, too. Deeper into the museum is a fully stocked and recently remodeled Publix grocery store, pediatric doctor’s office, tree-themed climbing playhouse and slides, and leaf vacuum/blower.

2nd floor at TCMU Spartanburg

Head down the staircase or elevator to check out the basement level. There is an interactive water exhibit that features water spray spouts, building and manipulating currents, fishing poles, and lures, and special baby seats for the tiniest explorers to safely sit and splash in the water. Aprons are available to keep clothes dry, but you may also want to bring a change of clothes if your child doesn’t want to wear the apron.

Continue through the 2nd level and you will find a giant train table, building and connecting foam blocks, and another enclosed baby play area. Towards the back of the first floor (or closest to the stairwell going back up to the main entrance) is the classroom. Special crafts and storytimes are located in the classroom and staff will invite children in to participate and create a project. This is great for kids of all ages as the craft can usually be as complex or as simple as the child wishes. For example, using pre-cut circles, my 6-year-old was prompted to create a picture of her family, while my 22-month-old and three-month-old were happy just to get to use glue sticks to paste as many circles as they desired onto the paper.

What makes TCMU Spartanburg awesome

There is SO much to do! Kids love it! Even my 6-year-old and her 7-year-old friend, who is technically over the age the exhibits are geared towards, were constantly occupied and having fun, but it is a magical level of freedom and exploration and play for my 22-month-old and three-year-old. All the exhibits are just the right height for them to play independently and without a plethora of older children, they felt confident and safe to freely explore and play.

They have never been ready to leave when I finally call it a day.

And, the open space of the floor plan means you can sit in a central location and still keep your children insight as they move from exhibit to exhibit. So if one child wants to explore the grocery store, while the other child wants to play doctor, and one more wants to climb into the treehouse and slide, you can easily keep an eye on everyone without having to negotiate locations with your children.

This is awesome! As a mother of three, I cannot love this more. The facilities are clean. Staff members are always tidying and the floors and toys are clean and accessible.

There are picnic tables outside the building if you want to pack a lunch or snack and sneak outside for a quick edible recharge, or you can walk to one of the nearby restaurants if you are looking for a more formal sit-down lunch and then head back to TCMU for more fun.

I am so excited and proud of Spartanburg for creating such a wonderful place for our youngest citizens to play and learn together. I look forward to many more playdates at TCMU.

Want Authentic Vietnamese? Try Lemongrass Kitchen.

Have you been to Lemongrass Kitchen in Spartanburg, SC yet? Growing up with a love of flavors and spices, I am in constant search not so much for fusion restaurants but more authentic dining experiences, places that are about celebrating their heritage and remain true to the characteristics of each dish.

There’s nothing like discovering a family-run restaurant who boldly share their home-grown recipes to share with the public. The Lemongrass Kitchen is such a place. It’s run by husband and wife team Tony Nguyen and his wife Thang Bui. Transplants from California, Tony used to run a kitchen in Chinatown, Los Angeles. Now they are adding to the growing list of fun dining options in downtown Spartanburg.

About The Lemongrass Kitchen

Just a block off Main Street, The Lemongrass Kitchen mostly serves Southern Vietnamese dishes. Just as if you were in Saigon, the restaurant specializes in Pho, a good-sized noodle dish, sometimes served in chicken or beef broth and paired with fragrant condiments of basil, mint leaves and bean sprouts, a definite Southern Vietnam touch.

Some visitors might be surprised with the limited menu, but if you were to visit Vietnam, this is actually typical. Restaurants specialize in specific dishes and have about multiple variations of the same dish. So goes with The Lemongrass Kitchen. On our visit, hubby had the “dry” noodle dish, Bun Thit, a combination of vermicelli rice noodles, fresh vegetables, spring rolls, and sliced pork. I was feeling cold and ordered the beef Pho, Pho Tai cooked with a deep sweetish broth and served with thick flat noodles. If you noticed, both dishes had noodles, veggies, and meat.

But the variations come in broth options, type of noodles, and protein of choice (they also have tofu on request). I also ordered a pearl milk tea, just because they had it and I was glad I did. It was a nice addition to the savory dish I had.

One thing we love about Vietnamese food is its freshness. We found the same experience at The Lemongrass Kitchen which sources their produce from the local farmers’ markets. The broth was crystal clear, probably from simmered bone marrow cooked for hours and strained with love. Compared to Japanese Ramen, it is much lighter and the noodles are made of rice, not wheat (though we do love our fair share of Ramen).

Before you add any Sriracha (the now ubiquitous Vietnamese chili sauce) to your dish, make sure to taste the broth first and savor it. Every kitchen has its signature Pho flavor. Then proceed and make it your own, with a squeeze of lemon, a bite of basil, a handful of bean sprouts for crunch, and maybe a splash of more fish sauce.

Another thing we ordered was the Cha Gio or the Vietnamese egg roll. It was a delicious appetizer and quite reasonable. Altogether, our bill was roughly $25, though if you didn’t order all the other things I did, a meal here would cost $10 per dish. A bowl of Pho can easily be shared with your littles. If you’re not up to having soup or a baguette sandwich (Banh Mi), I would suggest trying a couple of the appetizers for a meal.

The restaurant is casual dining, decorated with a bamboo theme. They mostly cater to the office lunch crowd but open for dinner till 8 pm.

How to Get Young Kids Volunteering in Spartanburg

Are you looking for volunteer opportunities in Spartanburg for young children to participate? We’ve come up with several places where young kids can volunteer and where kids can take donations in Spartanburg. Peruse the list and find a Spartanburg location that will motivate your child to give.

More and more, families are using the holiday season to spread kindness and teach children the spirit of giving.

Our family celebrates the season leading up to Christmas with an activity-filled advent calendar, which includes fun Christmas activities, as well as acts of kindness, giving or service.

But with three children under 4, finding age-appropriate opportunities can be challenging. While they are too young to volunteer at soup kitchens, hospitals or food banks, there are still many things they can do in and around Spartanburg and the Upstate to help our community.

Organizations that rely on donations all year

Last year when my son was 2, and we were looking for a charity he would both understand and be excited to help, we chose the Humane Society. After setting a budget, my son helped us choose food, beds, and treats for the dogs and cats waiting for homes. He loved helping load up the shopping cart, and carrying the bags. At the Humane Society building on Airport Road, he very proudly handed over the items we were dropping off. He got to meet some of the puppies and was so proud of himself for helping the animals.
- Hope Center for Children in Spartanburg keeps accepts donations, and offers the opportunity to volunteer.
- Spartanburg Soup Kitchen donations can be made any day of the week from 7:30 am – 2 pm or online.
- P.S. I Love You Ministries in Spartanburg accepts clothing donations, as well as wish list items and care bag items, which are given to children in foster care.
- Daily Bread Ministries runs Greer Soup Kitchen. They have a wish list of items they need to stock the kitchen pantry.
- Atheists Helping the Homeless does a giveaway of toiletries, clothing, food to go, and a hot meal on the third Sunday of each month at 10 am at Hub City Farmers Market, during which volunteers are always needed. AHH also maintains a wishlist.
- Greer Community Ministries provides items for Meals on Wheels Pets, the Food Pantry, and Sharon’s Closest. They keep an updated current needs list and accept items Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.
- The Haven is a homeless shelter for families in Spartanburg. They have a needed items list.
- DSS has a wish list for children in foster care in Region 1 (which includes Greenville and Spartanburg counties).
- Lutheran Services of the Carolinas has wish lists for senior citizens, refugees, and foster care.
- Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas has an Amazon wish list.
- Thrive Upstate helps people with disabilities and special needs. They accept monetary donations.
- Calvary Home for Children in Anderson has a lis t of items in need.
- Wildlife Rehab of Greenville has a variety of ways to help the animals in their care.
- Greenville County Animal Care has a w ish list, as well as the opportunity to sponsor an animal while they wait for their forever home.
Make Christmas Cards or Decorations

This is a great idea for little ones because the bulk of their volunteering can be done at home. Colorful paper chains, garland or pictures really brighten up hospitals, fire stations, retirement communities, children’s homes or animal shelters. Be sure to call before delivering your cards or decorations.

I’ve had several friends ask about sending Christmas cards to soldiers. One of the more popular organizations is Operation Gratitude. This organization sends care packages and letters to those who serve. Additionally, they collect Beanie Babies for soldiers to give to children in combat zones, and they also run a Halloween Candy Give-Back program.

Adopt a Family or Child

The Salvat ion Army of Spartanburg has several opportunities for families to serve throughout the holidays including their Adopt a Family and Angel Tree Program.

Adopt a military family through Soldiers Angels. This is not a local organization; however, you can request families in particular states.

Operation Christmas Child is an international charity that delivers shoeboxes filled with toys and necessities to children in need all over the world. Many of my friends with small children do this because it’s something the kids will understand and can help with at home. This Christmas, you can still donate and have them create a box for you online.

Help with a Toy, Food, Clothing or Donation Drive

Young children can help collect items by asking neighbors, friends or family members to donate. They can also sort items into boxes and help deliver everything to designated drop off spots. Families can also organize donation drives through several local charities. Items can be collected at Christmas parties, cookie exchanges, or even play dates.

Places to donate toy, clothing or food this time of year

Upstate Food Not Bombs helps feed, clothe, and support the Upstate homeless population. They post updated needs weekly, and this is an easy way to involve your children in a donation effort.

Spread Cheer and Good Will

Bake cookies and make decorations to drop off at your local fire station, police station, hospital, urgent care, assisted living facility or doctor’s office. Be sure to call first to make sure there is a good time to do this.

Write letters or draw Christmas pictures to give to your mail carrier, neighbor or teacher.

My son is very shy, but one thing he has loved doing lately is handing out stickers to people he meets throughout our day. We recently bought a sheet of Christmas stickers, and so far he has handed them out to the cashier at the grocery store, the librarian, a friend who came over and the UPS guy.

Make bird feeders to hang in your yard to help birds through the winter.

Write a nice note or make a holiday card for a family member.

Make a batch of peppermint-scented play dough for a friend.

In our household, in addition to eating a filling home-cooked meal, Thanksgiving means making memories with family and friends. If you’re looking for ways to have fun together in the Spartanburg area during Thanksgiving week, here are some ideas to consider.

Explore at TCMU-Spartanburg

The Children’s Museum of the Upstate Spartanburg is always a fun option for families with young kids. The museum is designed for children under the age of 5 and also includes Toddler Zones for guests under the age of 18 months. During Thanksgiving week, the museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The museum is in the heart of downtown Spartanburg at 130 Magnolia Street. Admission is $7 for SC residents and tickets can be purchased in advance. Members and children aged 6 months and under are free.

Get Outside

Whether you like the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, the feel of brisk cold rushing through your lungs, or enjoy a good old-fashioned leaf fight, Spartanburg and the Upstate offer a variety of outdoor venues for exploring, exercising, and playing. Hatcher Garden and Cleveland Park are two of our favorite outdoor spots in Spartanburg and Croft State Park is on my list of places to check out.

Get Moving!

My family gets some exercise during holiday breaks and Spartanburg does not disappoint in that regard. In addition to a variety of outdoor spaces, Spartanburg offers roller skating, bowling, indoor trampolining, indoor rock climbing, and indoor bounce houses. Turkey Trot

The YMCA of Spartanburg is hosting a 5K race on Friday, November 24, 2023 that you can join. Runners will also take to the streets of downtown Spartanburg for the PAL Spartanburg Turkey Trot 8K. Most of these races benefit local charities. Runners and walkers also earn cool swag like race t-shirts, finisher medals, and giveaways. In most cases, strollers are welcome. Register sooner than later!

Lighten Up

A family friend reminded me of a self-guided tour of the Lighten Up lightbulb sculptures that decorate downtown Spartanburg. A walking tour of these 30 bright bulbs is a good way to get in some exercise and/or do some important holiday-related window shopping.

Wild About Lights

Things to Do in Downtown Spartanburg at Christmas Time

Shop at Imagination Station

My family loves the local toy store Imagination Station. It is full of unique toys and gadgets, and the owners are delightful. I love taking the kids to toy stores before Christmas because it gives me a better idea of what things they actually want (versus what they think they want). This toy store has plenty of toys they can test out. Plus, toy stores just seem to make everyone act like a kid.

Little River Coffee Bar

Warm up with a holiday beverage (peppermint hot chocolate for the kids and peppermint mocha for mom and dad) at Little River Coffee Bar. The coffee shop is located in the old Masonic Temple building. There is indoor and outdoor seating that is perfect for people-watching on busy holiday weekends.

Spill the Beans

On Main Street in Spartanburg, right across the street from the Play on Main at Denny’s Plaza playground, you’ll find Spill the Beans. Their menu offers delicious hot chocolate and various coffee beverages, as well as ice cream, cookies, and lots of other baked treats. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating.

The Play on Main at Denny’s Plaza is a unique playground right in Downtown Spartanburg. Kids love the unique climbing structures, and parents love the fence surrounding the playground and the solid surface rubber ground that covers the playspace. So, after you’ve filled up your kids with the sugar in that hot chocolate, let them run it off at the playground.

Main Street Trolley Holiday Lights Tour

If you decide to take the family downtown, I suggest adding the Main Street Trolley Holiday Lights Tour to your itinerary. It begins at the Magnolia Train Depot in downtown Spartanburg. Your family will get to ride along, listen to Christmas carols, and see the local Christmas lights.

Not to Miss Holiday Events in Spartanburg

Dickens of a Christmas and the Spartanburg Christmas Parade are Downtown Spartanburg’s popular Christmas-time events. They are a fabulous way to enjoy and celebrate the season with the city. But, if you’re planning a visit downtown and would rather avoid the crowds, you’ll want to avoid these two events.

Dickens of a Christmas- (December 5th, 2023 from 6 to 9 pm) Victorian-style Christmas celebration throughout Downtown Spartanburg. Enjoy live music, vendors, tree lighting, horse and carriage rides, living window displays, and more.

Were you thinking about going to visit A Dickens of a Christmas in Spartanburg? This unique Victorian Christmas festival has carolers, horse-drawn carriages, a festive holiday market, tree lighting, and so much more this year.

This holiday event is worth the drive from Greenville, or wherever you live in the Upstate!

The 2023 Dickens of a Christmas is December 5th, 2023, from 6 to 9 pm.

What is Spartanburg’s A Dickens Of A Christmas?

Have you ever watched A Hallmark channel movie where some fictional town creates an over-the-top Christmas event, complete with costumes?

This is Spartanburg’s A Dickens of a Christmas. Complete with carolers in costume.

Stretching from Little River Coffee Company to Denny’s Corporate Building, Spartanburg’s Main Street comes alive with holiday cheer.

Things To See and Do During This Spartanburg Christmas Event

Local businesses dress their windows with holiday decorations, live people, musicians, and even dancers. You never know what fun surprise you’ll find sitting in the windows of the shops downtown at A Dickens of a Christmas.

Community members will line the streets with fun things for the whole family! Crafts, smores, and more will be offered to guests of the event.

Strolling carolers dressed in Victorian outfits, live nativity scenes, children’s choirs from local schools, and other entertainment is sprinkled throughout downtown during the event.

The best way to experience A Dickens of a Christmas is to park near Little River Coffee Co, and then work your way towards the Denny’s Building where the tree lighting will happen.

Grabbing Dinner or Dessert in Downtown Spartanburg

A MUST HAVE at A Dickens of a Christmas is a cup of Hot Cocoa! Little River Coffee Co is the place to grab cocoa for the kids and a piping hot mocha for the grown-ups. There are often vendors set up throughout the street also.

Being out in the cold in Downtown Spartanburg will probably have you craving a warm bowl of soup. Monsoon Noodle house has soup options that will warm you right up and other delicious dishes if you need something more hearty.

Over 50 Light Displays Near Greenville and Spartanburg

Are you looking for the best places to see Christmas lights near Greenville, SC or Spartanburg, SC? This list includes all of the local mega-light displays, light displays large enough to drive to see, and even some local Christmas lights at homes that deck it out for Christmas Griswold style.

Drive-Thru Holiday Lights Near Greenville and Spartanburg

Anderson Christmas Lights across from the Anderson Civic Center Thanksgiving, November 23 – December 25, 2023
It includes 3.5 million Christmas lights!

- Special entertainment is listed on their Entertainment Schedule
Upstate Holiday Light Show at District Park in Easley, SC opens Thanksgiving through December 31, 2023. In addition to driving through the dancing lights, guests can also visit a winter wonderland and Santa’s free petting zoo.

- Sun-Thurs 6 pm-10 pm
- Fri & Sat 6 pm-11 pm
Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland and Winterfest Village – This drive-thru light experience at the Tryon Equestrian International Center is a real family treat. There are also live shows on select nights. The show runs nightly from November 17, 2023 – January 7, 2024, from 6-10 pm. The Winterfest Village is open weekends in December through December 23rd from 5-9 pm.
- Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland Weekdays: $30/cars, Weekends: $35/cars (additional costs for larger vehicles)

Holiday Lights Trolley Tours with Main Street Trolley operate in Spartanburg, SC throughout the month of December. The exact dates and 2023 pricing are TBA.

Oconee State Park Holiday Light Show will be a walk-through or drive-through event! Trees will be lit with beautiful lights and holiday displays. There will be a Santa workshop while you grab hot chocolate and coffee.

The Magical Music Holiday Light Show at Seneca’s Norton-Thompson Park is a FREE event and fun for the whole family! Dates are from November 17th, 2023 to December 31st, 2023.

Holiday Putt Through Lights at Takeoff Minigolf in Greenville: You can walk through a big holiday light display while playing mini-golf. The special event opens November 24, 2023 and runs Thursday-Sunday until December 30th. Tickets should be reserved online and are $15/adults, $13/kids.

[2023 info has not been announced] Lake Lure Flowering Bridge: This is a short day trip from Greenville but totally worth it. The Flowering Bridge in Lake Lure, NC is free and during Christmas, they light it up and you can walk through the display and garden! See our story on the cool bridge, which also includes things to do in the Chimney Rock Village just down the street (I’d recommend getting hot chocolate). The lights will remain on through the first week of January and a holiday celebration will take place on November 30th at 5:30 pm.

Lighting Displays and Ceremonies

Holidays at the Zoo– (Select dates in December) Walk through the Greenville Zoo and be dazzled by thousands of lights, festive decorations, and holiday music. Tickets are timed, and advanced registration is recommended. The zoo will be closed from December 24th – 25th. Other dates are open from 4 pm to 8 pm. You can purchase tickets online.

Christmas on Limestone in Gaffney with Laser Light Show– (December 1st, 2023) There will be a parade, laser light show, and a Main Street celebration in Gaffney.

2023 Festival of Trees – Come see the holiday trees on display from November 17th, 2023 to December 25th, 2023 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown, the Courtyard Marriott Greenville Downtown, Embassy Suites Downtown, and the Hampton Inn & Suites RiverPlace. FREE

Tiny Town Easley, SC– A piece of the small town South lives on, in tiny form! Over 80 tiny structures adorned with lights, Christmas decor, and lots of character make up Tiny Town. The display is open nightly from Thanksgiving Day to New Year’s Day (closed when raining). They also have hot chocolate, hot coffee, a bonfire, and select dates of visits with Santa.

City of Seneca Tree Lighting and Magical Musical Holiday Light Show in Seneca – Join the mayor on November 27th, 2023 at 5 pm for this fun-filled holiday tradition of lighting the Christmas Tree at Norton-Thompson Park. The Christmas Parade follows at 6:30 pm. The Magical Musical Holiday Light Show runs November 17th-December 31st nightly from 5:30-10 pm.

Holiday Hop: Travelers Rest, SC Tree Lighting and more (November 27th, 2023) Tree Lighting, Christmas kids craft station, stories with Mrs. Claus, selfies with Santa all on Main Street in Travelers Rest, SC.

[2023 info has not been announced] Simpsonville Tree Lighting Ceremony (December 1, 2022 at 6 pm) – Sing-a-longs, free hot chocolate, cookies, and letters to Santa. Free.

Mauldin Tree Lighting (November 30th, 2023 at 5 pm) – Enjoy holiday music and tree lighting at the Mauldin Outdoor Amphitheater behind the Mauldin Cultural Center.

Tree Lighting Ceremony at Greer City Park (December 1, 2023 at 5-8 pm) This family-friendly event also includes a visit from Santa. Be sure to head over to Trade Street for dinner before or after the event. The full event starts at 5:00 pm.

Night of Lights: Greenville Christmas Tree Lighting (December 1, 2023 at 5:30 pm) This event will have live music, vendors, food trucks, and more starting at 5:30 pm.

Dickens of a Christmas- (December 5th, 2023 from 6 to 9 pm) Tree lighting in Spartanburg, SC. The event also includes a Victorican-style Christmas celebration throughout Downtown Spartanburg. Enjoy live music, vendors, horse and carriage rides, living window displays, and more.

Speedway Christmas Lights – The annual drive-thru Christmas lights at the Charlotte Motor Speedway is super popular. More than 4 million lights over 3.75 miles adorn this display, which runs from Friday, November 17, 2023, to Sunday, January 7, 2024. They are closed on Christmas Day.
- Tickets for cars are $35 – $45 and $140-$175 for buses. Fast passes are available for $75 per car (including ticket).
Holiday Lights on the River at Saluda Shoals Park in Columbia, SC (Thursday, November 23rd, 2023 to Friday, December 31st, 2023) Over a million lights on the 2-mile loop of the park. Includes a laser light show, hayrides, tube slide, Santa, and more.
- Admission is $25 a family car.

Holiday Lights on the River, Columbia, SC

Winter Lights – This popular light show at the NC Arboretum in Asheville is converting the walk-through garden lights to a one-mile drive-thru experience. The show runs from November 17, 2023 – December 31, 2023 nightly from 6 pm – 10:30 pm.

Garden Lights at Atlanta Botanical Garden (November 18, 2023 – January 14, 2024) This massive light display includes colored orbs, model trains, and a glittery rain forest.

Christmas Town, USA in McAdenville, NC (December 1 – 26, 2023) This nearby town decks out completely for Christmas. You can either park and walk around the town or drive through (the 1.3 miles takes approximately 30-40 minutes to drive through). The lights are on nightly from 5:30 – 10 pm.

World of Illuminations is taking place at one Atlanta area location this year, the Six Flags White Water park in Marietta (November 15th, 2023 – December 31st, 2023). Santa at Haywood Mall Make a reservation now to see Santa beginning November 10th, 2023. You will need to book and pay for your Santa Magic photo experience in advance. Packages start at $39.99.

Santa at Cabela’s 2023 Reservations are now open. Santa arrives on November 4th, and photos with Santa begin November 4th, 2023. Santa at Hidden Pasture Farm’s Yuletide Unicorn Festival: Weekends November 17th through December 23rd, 2023 from 11 am until 9 pm see Santa for visits and pictures. Santa pictures are free to take. Tickets to the festival are $18 each for those 18+, $14 each for those ages 3-17, and babies 2 and under are free.

Holiday Hop & Tree Lighting (November 25th, 2023) Tree Lighting, Christmas kids craft station, stories with Mrs. Claus, FREE professional photos with Santa (available for download after the event) all on Main Street in Travelers Rest, SC.

Greenville Christmas Market at Grand Bohemian Lodge (Select dates with Santa are November 24th, 2023 – December 30th, 2023) Meet and greet with Santa on select dates during the Greenville Christmas Market at the Grand Bohemian Lodge in Downtown Greenville. Hours vary.

See Santa Near the Upstate: Santa Day Trips and Getaways

Select dates in November and December, 2023: Visit Santa at Winchester Creek Farm in Waynesville, NC. Tour of the farm, where they have alpacas (and baby alpacas!), miniature cows and horses, donkeys, and chickens. Kids can visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus in the comfort of the barn and tickets include a complimentary cookie and candy cane.

December 2nd, 2023: 26th Annual Santa on the Chimney at Chimney Rock State Park. Viewers will get to see Santa climbing down the Chimney (rock that is!). There will be photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, live holiday music, letters to Santa, crafts, hiking with an elf, animal meet and greets, holiday shopping, and more! The event is included in park admission.

2023 Dates TBD: Tiny Town in Easley is where you will find Santa visiting and meeting with children. While there, you can also visit dozens of miniature Christmas displays.

Boiling Springs Christmas Parade is one of Spartanburg’s Favorites

Thinking about heading to the Boiling Springs Christmas Parade? We have all the information on the parade, plus nearby restaurants where you might want to grab breakfast before the parade or lunch afterward.

The 2023 Boiling Springs Christmas Parade is December 2nd, 2023 at 10 am.

Christmas parades are a huge part of the holiday season for families. They’re a time for communities to show off their talented members and for children to get that first glimpse of Santa Claus. One of Spartanburg’s most popular parades is the one that takes place in Boiling Springs.

This year’s Boiling Springs Christmas parade will start at 10 am on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023. The Parade will line up at Highway 9 and Blalock Road at SubWay, and end behind the Clock Restaurant on Double Bridge Road. Attendants will be on hand to direct the line-up for overflow attendees in the Parade.

They are expecting a very large participation in the 2023 Boiling Springs Christmas Parade and are advising people to come early to get a good place along the route to see the parade and for the kids to collect the candy that will be tossed off many floats.

Parade organizers thank the volunteers, law enforcement officers, Boiling Springs Fire Department, parade participants, and those who come out to enjoy and support their efforts.
