  • Cooler temperatures and thunderstorms coming to Southern California, but with increased fire risk

Cooler temperatures and thunderstorms coming to Southern California, but with increased fire risk

Cooler temperatures and potential rain is coming to southern California this weekend, but with increased fire risk in a region where the state’s largest blaze this year is already burning.

The National Weather Service is predicting scattered showers and thunderstorms in the southern half of the state on Saturday, along with some cooler temperatures over the weekend that could finally bring some temporary relief to a prolonged heat wave scorching the region.

National Weather Service meteorologist John Dumas said despite potential wet weather and lower temperatures, fire risk may only increase.

In a pattern referred to as virga, the moisture in the middle layers of the atmosphere will fall as rain, but evaporate before hitting the ground, Dumas said.

“Unfortunately, the lightning can still make it,” Dumas said, which might spark new wildfires.

That could worsen conditions for fire personnel working around the clock to extinguish the Lake fire in Santa Barbara County, California’s largest so far this year. That blaze has grown to 37,742 acres, but firefighters have worked to contain the blaze around the Santa Ynez and Los Olivos region where structures were threatened.

Crew members have made a “visible difference” on the south side of the fire in recent days, where flames could previously be seen from Santa Ynez and the Lake Cachuma area, said Capt. Scott Safechuck, spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department

Firefighters have worked through nights to make some progress on the blaze with controlled burns of dry vegetation and a water-dropping helicopter. Those coordinated efforts have “really been successful for us eliminating a lot of the threat on the south side,” Safechuck said.

Risk of fire-igniting dry lightning have led to weather officials issuing a red flag warning until 9 pm Saturday for the mountain and foothill regions of Los Angeles County, according to the weather service, along with the Antelope Valley and valleys of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, Ojai and Casitas Valley.

Dumas said weather service officials have tools that can both track in real time and model likely lightning strikes, which helps firefighters on the ground.

Dumas also said the heat will decrease by one or two degrees over the next few days, leading to “almost normal temperatures” by Monday or Tuesday before a new heat wave is expected to roll through Southern California.

  • Trauma response training class offered to South Side residents in Roseland, Chicago Heights

Trauma response training class offered to South Side residents in Roseland, Chicago Heights

CHICAGO (WLS) — Many people don’t know what to do if someone is hurt after a shooting, stabbing or traumatic event.

Trauma training is being offered to community residents on Chicago’s South Side.

The 5th district Cook County Commissioner, Monica Gordon, partnered with Ujimaa Medics to hold a class Saturday at Roseland Community Hospital, and they will hold another class next weekend.

The classes teach people the basics of first aid.

“Knowing someone who has been shot is no longer a remote possibility,” Gordon said. “Just like we should learn the Heimlich Maneuver to save someone’s life from choking, we should learn what to do for a gunshot victim.”

The second trauma training class will be held next Saturday morning, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights.

Registration for the class can be done on the Ujimaa Medics website.

  • Jury chosen for Emonte Morgan murder trial, accused of shooting CPD Officer Ella French in 2021

Jury chosen for Emonte Morgan murder trial, accused of shooting CPD Officer Ella French in 2021

CHICAGO (WLS) — To see the latest update of the trial, click here.

The trial for man accused of fatally shooting Chicago police Officer Ella French began on Monday with jury selection.

After initially selecting a jury, selection resumed Monday afternoon, after an alternate was removed.

Emonte Morgan and his brother Eric Morgan were charged in the 2021 murder of French.

Prosecutors said Emonte Morgan fired the fatal shots that killed French and injured her partner, Carlos Yanez, times during a traffic stop in West Englewood in August 2021.

His brother, Eric Morgan, was driving the car the officers had pulled over for expired tags, police said.

When French asked Eric Morgan to hand over the car keys and get out, he did. But police say Emonte Morgan, who was sitting in the back seat, would not cooperate. Investigators said he struggled with police, and had his gun in his waistband.

According to officials, both officers had their guns holstered when Emonte Morgan pulled out a gun and fired at both officers.

Emonte’s grandmother Denice Morgan was present in court to defend him Monday.

“He’s afraid; his life is at stake with this, you know. Who wouldn’t be afraid? He’s just starting out life, he’s a baby,” she said.

As jury selection began, a judge ordered Cook County deputies to collect fliers that had been posted around the courthouse in support of the accused murderer.

Emonte’s mother also demanded video evidence be shown in court.

“The narrative has been painted long enough – the false narrative by police,” his mother Evaleena Flores said. “It’s time that people know the truth. I say release the body cams and let the body cams speak for themselves.”

Last week, a judge ruled the jury will be allowed to hear and see the body camera footage.

Emonte Morgan has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Eric Morgan accepted a plea deal last year for a seven-year sentence.

French was one of the officers who took a 1-month-old baby and her mother to the hospital on July 2 when the baby was shot in the head during a mass shooting in Englewood.
