There’s a new neighborhood bar coming soon to South End in Charlotte.
Ginny’s Whiskey Bar is slated to open Saturday, Dec. 27, replacing the former Broken Promises cocktail lounge at 214 West Tremont Ave.
The latter closed back in May and had been featured on the Netflix reality dating series “The Ultimatum,” which filmed its second season in Charlotte, CharlotteFive previously reported.
Remodeling is complete, but Ginny’s Whiskey Bar is still awaiting its ABC permit, according to Business Debut.
“We’re almost there!” Ginny’s captioned a video shared to Instagram showing furniture being moved into the new space. “Opening day is right around the corner.”
Customers can look forward to an Irish-style pub serving “bourbons, Irish whiskeys and six Irish and English beers on tap,” WhatNow Charlotte reported. There will also be a dedicated space for shuffleboard and video games.
“It’s nothing extravagant — just a nice neighborhood bar,” co-owner John Ellison told the outlet. “It’s reminiscent of what the original Gin Mill was.”
Ellison described the 2,500-square-foot space as a casual hangout to meet up and unwind with friends, Business Debut reported. He added that Ginny’s will have a food truck on-site most days rather than operate a full kitchen.
Ginny’s Whiskey Bar will be open Wednesday through Friday from 4 p.m. – 2 a.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from noon until 2 a.m.
CharlotteFive reached out to the bar for more information on Monday, Dec. 15, and was awaiting a response.

Charlotte’s food scene in November revolved around exciting developments in the Michelin Guide American South and various local restaurant changes.
Several CharlotteFive articles highlight Charlotte’s anticipation for Michelin Star announcements. The city saw its first Michelin Star awarded to a restaurant, boosting its culinary reputation. Counter-, a tasting restaurant, earned both a Michelin Star and a Green Star, making waves in Charlotte’s dining scene.
Additionally, a new arcade bar with retro games and a retro theme opened in South End, adding to Charlotte’s nightlife options.
Meanwhile, the community rallied to support Latino-owned businesses facing challenges due to an increased presence of U.S. Border Patrol.
Entrepreneurial openings like a new immigrant-owned wellness restaurant aimed to offer healthy fare in Camp North End, showcasing the diversity and growth in the local food industry.
Overall, November was a dynamic month for Charlotte’s food and beverage sectors, marked by significant achievements and community efforts.

People aggressively soliciting for fraudulent charities have charged just over $170,000 from people in Boston across 11 recent incidents, police said Thursday, warning the public about the scams.
In one case, Boston police said, someone had $50,000 charged from their account without authorization, in a scheme being reported across the country.
The scammer or scammers typically approaches a woman in a parking lot asking for donations about a dead child or charity, then push the person to donate with their phone or credit card, sometimes using the payment method themselves.
Those tactics have recently been used by small groups trying to raise money for a football team near South Station, police said Thursday.
It’s a similar scheme to what police described last month in South Boston — though officials didn’t say if they were related. In those incidents, three people had money stolen outside of a Walgreens and a Whole Foods from a group of men claiming to be collecting donations.
In each of those incidents, three men approached someone and pressured them into giving money by credit card over a tragedy in the family, according to police reports. While they indicated they were charging a small amount of money, $5 or $15, they ended up charging thousands.
Experts have advice on how to keep your phone safe from thefts like several that are under investigation in Boston.
Police on Thursday urged people not to hand their phone or credit card to people and to verify charities themselves before donating. Anyone who suspects they’re being targeted by one of the scams was urged to get away and report the activity to police.
A new restaurant is bringing “the vibrant traditions of India“ to Charlotte’s dining scene.
Raahi Art of India is now open in South End, occupying the former Brown Bag Seafood Co. spot on West Worthington Avenue.
The restaurant soft launched in September, and the official grand opening is slated for late October or early November, owner Anandakumar Chakkaravarthi told CharlotteFive.
Chakkaravarthi also owns Cholanadu Indian Bistro in Fort Mill, and his latest venture will have similar offerings. Guests can expect traditional recipes crafted with spices and regional culinary techniques found across India.

“Each dish we create is a reflection of India’s diverse culinary heritage, prepared with aromatic spices, fresh ingredients, and time-honored recipes passed down through generation,” the restaurant’s website says.
The menu features classic plates such as tandoori chicken, tikka masala and vindaloo — a spicy curry dish made with tomato sauce, chilis and vinegar.
Samosas are also on the menu, alongside small plates of honey cauliflower and a spicy prawn dish called Eral Thokku.
Lunch and dinner service are available at the restaurant, which is closed Mondays.

I arrived at La Lima Sangucheria a few minutes before the doors opened, and already a small line had gathered. It felt like an encouraging sign for a newcomer.
The fast-casual Peruvian sandwich launched in March from the co-founder of Viva Chicken, CharlotteFive reported.
The restaurant’s minimalist design, from the pale wood furniture to the soft globe lighting, feels warm thanks to earthy textures and abundant natural light, creating a calm, modern space, perfect for enjoying a meal.
That calmness, however, was soon overtaken by the kitchen, with the hiss of the pans, stir of the pots and sharp calls exchanged between cooks quickly filling the air, along with the sounds of an upbeat Peruvian song playing in the background.
La Lima Sangucheria is at 131 E Park Ave. in South End. Evan Moore
La Lima is in the heart of South End, and the clientele reflects it: twenty- and thirty-something professionals on their lunch breaks or treating themselves on a day off.
And, like with many other restaurants in the neighborhood, you can expect sleek, Instagram-ready interiors, buzzing atmospheres and food that always delivers on its promise.
Unfortunately, bargains are scarce in South End – even a quick lunch carries a premium.
Here’s what you need to know about La Lima.
What’s on the menu at La Lima?
The La Lima menu includes an assortment of sandwiches, salads, bowls, soups and desserts.
Menu prices range from $8.25-$17 for entrees and most sides cost around $4.
La Lima’s Verda Fiora sandwich is packed with fried eggplant, fresh arugula, pesto, and cheese and served with a rich tomato sauce. Denise Casalaz CharlotteFive
Here’s everything I got for roughly $20 (before tax and tip):
Tusan sandwich: made with marinated grilled steak, red onion, tomato, carretillero sauce and micro cilantro ($16)
Sweet potato fries ($3.55)
If you scoffed at those prices, you’re not wrong.
It’s South End. There are plenty of great restaurants, but you can expect to pay at least $20 for a meal at most places. Add an appetizer or alcoholic beverage, and the tab can easily climb past $30.
I made a point to stay under my budget of $25, but if I ordered what I usually do when I eat out (an appetizer, entree, dessert and any number of beers dictated by the Panthers’ performance), I would have spent upwards of $40.
Now, the sandwich.
The Tusan sandwich at La Lima is made with marinated grilled steak, red onion, tomato, carretillero sauce and micro cilantro. Evan Moore
This sandwich hits you with flavor from the very first bite. The steak is juicy and smoky, packed with marinade that makes it anything but ordinary. Then comes the crunch – fresh red onion and tomato bringing that snap of flavor you need to balance the richness.
But the real star? That carretillero sauce. It was tangy, spicy and just messy enough to remind me it was comfort food at heart. The sprinkle of micro cilantro gives it a fresh little kick at the end. Think bold street-food energy, but dressed up just enough to feel special.
And the sweet potato fries were the kind you wouldn’t want to share. Crispy on the outside with that caramelized edge, they give way to a soft, almost creamy center that makes each bite addictive.
So, is La Lima worth a visit? Absolutely. The sandwiches are hearty, the flavors blend effortlessly together and the atmosphere has a magnetic energy that draws you in.
Consider the cost part of the experience – good, quality food rarely comes cheap, and there, every bite feels worth the cost.

Three people had money stolen outside popular Boston stores from a group of men claiming to be collecting donations, Boston police said Thursday, asking for help identifying the fraudsters.
In each of the incidents, two on Saturday and one on Wednesday, three men approached someone and pressured them into giving money by credit card over a tragedy in the family, according to police reports. While they indicated they were charging a small amount of money, $5 or $15, they ended up charging thousands.
The instances of fraud allegedly took place at a South End Whole Foods and a South Boston Walgreens Saturday, and the same Walgreens on Wednesday, according to police.
In the case of the Walgreens incident, reported as a robbery, the men wouldn’t accept her saying “no,” then grabbed her phone and replied to an authorization message from her credit card company to OK a $4,000 payment.
One of the men police are looking for was reported to have a tattoo that reads “Red” above his left eyebrow, officials said, asking for anyone with information to contact them.

“Each venue will offer its own unique vibe and sound, with different DJs and events on weekends, creating a true nightclub complex that offers something for everyone,” the nightclub’s announcement states. “Our aim is to continue to expand on RSVP South End’s private event venue business, ensuring it remains a vibrant and inclusive haven for all.”
Since opening back in 1968, the club has been a beloved space for the LGBTQ+ community around the city, which is why so many are elated to hear that it’s reopening — especially during Pride month.
“This is extremely exciting for the new generation of young LGBTQIA people in Charlotte to finally have a NEW place to call their own home bar,” one Facebook comment by BC Tipton says.
An official opening date has yet to be announced. Keep an eye out on this space for any updates.

Toastique is opening at Vantage South End in June.

Toastique, an “all day micro cafe” specializing in artisan toast and juices, will open at Vantage South End in June.
As it will be the first Toastique location in North Carolina, its owners — a husband-and-wife duo from Weddington, Chris and Angela Bjorson — are already planning for additional locations in SouthPark and Ballantyne.
The Charlotte location is Toastique’s latest expansion for this Washington-DC- based restaurant, known for its gourmet toast, smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juices and espresso.
With 1,800 square feet, the location will open its doors seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“My wife and I were looking to get involved with an existing business and were blown away by the Toastique brand when we learned about the variety and quality of its products,” Chris Bjorson said.
Upon Toastique’s opening, you can expect to find artisan options such as its avocado smash toast and spicy crab toast, along with a wide variety of bowls including the popular PB&B bowl, which comes with açaí, peanut butter, banana and almond milk, and topped with chopped dates, blueberries, granola, peanuts and honey roasted peanut butter drizzle.

This juice cafe also features freshly blended smoothies, such as its Green Machine, and coffee offerings including nitro cold brew and iced collagen lattes. And, if you’re looking for a to-go option, Toastique also offers cold-pressed juices on tap and in bottles, as well as grab-and-go salad options.
“Coming from the IT industry, I was ready for a new challenge. We’re looking forward to opening the first location in North Carolina and bringing these stunning and nutritious menu items to our community. We’re also going to be offering a vegan soft serve, not common at other Toastique locations and very hard to find in Charlotte,” Bjorson said. The soft serve will come in chocolate and vanilla.

For a little less than two years, all one had to do to find endless summer was to stop into SummerBird, a fast-casual restaurant in Charlotte’s South End.
But now, there are no more Sun-Kissed salads or Sweet Carolina sandwiches: SummerBird announced its sudden closure on Thursday, April 25.
“Announcing with a heavy heart, Summerbird will be closing its doors starting Thursday, April 25th at 2 p.m.,” the restaurant posted on Instagram.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible team and cherished guests whose unwavering support has fueled our journey,” the post stated. “We are profoundly grateful for how each of you has brought our summer dreams to life. For us, summer will always be a state of mind and we hope you will remember us that way as well!”

Summer all year
SummerBird opened in August 2022 at The RailYard in South End. It was owned by former NASCAR CEO Brian France and his investment company, Silver Falcoln Capital.
The fast-casual cafe celebrated summer year-round with its themed decor and menu, which combined the indulgent (such as the Sweet Carolina chicken sandwich) with the healthy (the restaurant’s salads were among this writer’s favorites!).
“We wanted somewhere (that) felt like you were having a backyard barbecue with your friends that harkened to nostalgia and the old days of summer,” managing partner Austin Tate told The Charlotte Observer ahead of the restaurant’s opening.

Regular customers expressed sadness and shock at the restaurant’s closure:
“We will miss you! Loved having you in the neighborhood the past couple of years!, wrote Katey Daniels.
“No!! A place that sells some of the world’s best food ever!! With some of the nicest servers ever!,” Reign Hudson stated.
“Nooooooo! We will miss you all – such a beautiful restaurant and great team :(,” Dan Bejmuk said.
