Plankton Energy Installs 229 kW Solar System for Cheshire Academy

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Feb 8, 2023

New York solar energy developer Plankton Energy recently energized a 229 kW rooftop solar system at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, CT. By utilizing the roof of the campus facilities building, the John J. White ’38 Science & Technology Center, and the Gideon Welles Dining Commons, the electricity needs of each of these buildings will be supplied by onsite solar power.

Funded entirely by Plankton Energy, at zero cost to Cheshire Academy, the system is expected to generate approximately 272,000 kWh of solar power annually. Over the lifetime of the system, Cheshire Academy will save over $297,000 on electricity expenses and avoid over 1,248 metric tons of COemissions, the equivalent of avoiding burning 140,000 gallons of gasoline. The panels serve as a visible reminder of the Academy’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

“Our mission is to empower students to thrive as global citizens. Nothing is more global than our environment, and the solar cells and energy made possible through our work with Plankton is a daily reminder to our students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors that acting locally has positive global impacts,” said Jennifer Dillon, Sustainability Coordinator of Cheshire Academy

“We’re thrilled to see this project come to fruition. Our team was grateful to partner with the team at Cheshire to assist them in achieving their environmental goals,” said Dan Giuffrida, CEO of Plankton Energy.

The success of this project was made possible by the Connecticut Zero Emission Renewable Energy Credit Program and by the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which was recently extended for 10 years through the Inflation Reduction Act.

Plankton Energy is a turnkey solar energy provider dedicated to serving schools, houses of worship, small and medium enterprises and community solar across the United States. Plankton supports schools and community institutions like Cheshire Academy to save considerably on their electricity bills and pioneer energy choices that align with their sustainability values.

  • Hereafter Farms is Building America’s Largest Sustainable Eco Community on 460 Acres in Georgia

Hereafter Farms is Building America’s Largest Sustainable Eco Community on 460 Acres in Georgia

    [ad_1]

The historic project brought together over 100 families in Central Georgia to build a Self Sustaining Community.

    Press Release

    Dec 27, 2022 11:00 EST

“It’s surreal that we’re actually doing it,” states Hereafter Farms Co-Founder Farrakhan Ali.

Their plan is to create a self-sustaining town where they and over 100 families will grow their own food, teach their own children, build sustainable housing, and develop businesses to create a healthy economic ecosystem that expands far beyond the community itself.

“When I started there were only a few of us. It was the height of the pandemic and I think we were all forced to think differently. I thought to myself, if there was ever a time to move towards self-sufficiency, this is it. It’s time to do what I’ve been thinking about all these years. What I couldn’t plan for was that there were thousands of people who were thinking the exact same thing I was at that time,” says Ali.

After months of searching, they found the perfect property.

Their 460 acres in Georgia has water, roads, existing tiny homes, and enough infrastructure for them to get a few projects off the ground quickly.

The secret, according to Ali, is keeping God at the center of everything.

The 100+ families are a diverse group of farmers, educators, health professionals, builders, tradesmen, seniors and millennials, and from the looks of it, they have the people they need to build and manage their town.

When asked why they chose the name “The Hereafter,” Ali explains it to us, “It’s a new environment. Hereafter means something new, right here. We’re building something new, growing something new, because we have a safe environment where everyone can be free to think and live creatively and peacefully.”

They plan to farm their own food using organic techniques, greenhouses, tower farms, row crops, and harvesting natural energy to create sustainable growing systems using solar energy. Animals are in their future, and they have timber for expanded home construction.

Their school seems to be a top priority. “Studies show mental health in children has had a downward trend. We are neutralizing that by offering them a safe space and an inclusive educational experience, reconnecting them with nature, with themselves, with God, and with their neighbors.”

The business plan is to create commercial activity that circulates currency within the community and expands outward into a public marketplace.

Their plan is to build in phases. The first phase includes clearing land, purchasing agricultural supplies and farming equipment, renovating the preexisting structures on the land, and covering the costs to get the development kicked off.

“We’re not just building this town for us, but to leave a legacy for the next generation, so they can create a better world than the one we grew up in.”

  • Ecogy Energy Helps American Red Cross in Tinton Falls Reduce Carbon Emissions

Ecogy Energy Helps American Red Cross in Tinton Falls Reduce Carbon Emissions

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Nov 15, 2022 14:30 EST

Today, Ecogy Energy (“Ecogy”), in partnership with the American Red Cross, unveiled their latest renewable energy project. The 120.1 kWdc solar system, developed by Brooklyn-based Ecogy, will provide the nonprofit with all the solar energy it needs to offset annual on-site electricity use, making the building net-zero.

The Red Cross New Jersey Region entered the solar development process with their local community at heart and top of mind. By installing solar on-site, the Red Cross will not only reduce their own need for electricity but will also help New Jersey reach its goal of 50% renewable energy sources by 2030.

The first rooftop solar array system (completed in 2022) will directly provide power for on-site usage. The second system, however, will be a community solar project that will provide no-cost subscriptions to local residents. These subscriptions will enable local households to access renewable energy and receive a discount on a portion of their electric bill with no cost to sign up.

“The savings generated by building this solar system atop our roof will allow us to commit even more resources to providing quality support to communities and families in need,” said Rosie Taravella, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross New Jersey Region. “As a humanitarian organization that serves families and communities impacted by climate disasters, our goal is to minimize our own environmental footprint. We’re excited to be doing our part here in New Jersey.”

The 120.1 kWdc rooftop system will produce roughly 2.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity over the next 20 years, equivalent to powering 19 homes over the same term, or the emissions avoided from burning over 2.1 million pounds of coal.

The above environmental benefits afforded by the solar array will be instrumental in helping the Red Cross become a more sustainable organization, while also creating a blueprint for future installations.

Rooftop systems provide the added benefit of maintaining undisturbed areas such as greenfields and forests. By developing on the built environment, no additional impervious surfaces were created, groundwater flow remains the same, and no trees were cut down.

“The American Red Cross is a pillar of light and hope for communities across the globe.” Commented Jack Bertuzzi, CEO, Ecogy Energy. “It is an honor to support the Red Cross in furthering the deployment of renewable energy. We are continually impressed by their dedication to supporting communities, and we hope to continue to work with them in the future.”

Brooklyn-based developer, financier, and owner-operator Ecogy will sell the power produced by the system back to the Red Cross through a power purchase agreement. In exchange, Ecogy will retain the Solar Renewable Energy Credits (“SREC”) generated for each MW of solar energy and have the option to trade or sell them like a stock option.

  • Plankton Energy Installs Solar System for Princeton Montessori School

Plankton Energy Installs Solar System for Princeton Montessori School

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Sep 8, 2022

Plankton Energy partnered with Princeton Montessori School to install a campus-wide 202.5kW rooftop solar system at no cost to Princeton. By transforming three building roofs into solar-powered generators, most of the school’s electricity needs will be supplied by onsite solar power.

The system was energized this August and stands to save Princeton over $720,000 over its lifetime and will avoid the emission of over 3,400 metric tons of CO2 over the life of the system. This is the equivalent of avoiding emissions from the use of over 380,000 gallons of gasoline.

Princeton Montessori Head of School Michelle Morrison says the school will utilize the “savings in supporting the education of our children and on other sustainability projects that will enable the School to live up to its ambitious environmental goals, and reflect the importance that Montessori teaching places on nature.”

“We’re thrilled to get this project operational before students returned to school and look forward to helping faculty utilize the system as a teaching tool for the students,” said Dan Giuffrida, CEO of Plankton Energy.

“Plankton Energy were professional, helpful and constructive all the way through the process. They answered myriad questions from school Board members and staff, patiently and clearly – very important when you are seeking to obtain agreement on such a major project. Plankton worked hard to ensure that the installation was not overly disruptive and we are now delighted to have a beautiful solar array providing us with renewable energy and significant savings.” – Gery Juleff, Sustainability Manager, Princeton Montessori.

The solar system was energized just three days after President Biden enacted the Inflation Reduction Act into law, which represents the biggest climate investment in U.S. history. The Act extended incentives for solar and eased the process for financing solar projects which will pave the way for solar deployments at schools across the country for the next decade.

Plankton Energy is a turnkey solar energy provider dedicated to serving schools, houses of worship, and small businesses across the United States. Plankton supports schools and community institutions like Princeton Montessori School to save considerably on their electricity bills and pioneer energy choices that align with their sustainability values.

Princeton Montessori School was founded in 1968 and is an independent, coeducational day school dedicated to the highest quality education of children, from infancy through middle school, according to the values and principles of the Montessori philosophy, which encourages self-motivated growth in children and adolescents. Approximately 200 families from the greater Princeton area enroll their children in Princeton Montessori School annually.

  • Kearsarge Energy Announces Andrew Bernstein Entrepreneur of the Year® 2019 Award Finalist in New England

Kearsarge Energy Announces Andrew Bernstein Entrepreneur of the Year® 2019 Award Finalist in New England

    [ad_1]

Kearsarge Energy is pleased to announce that its Managing Partner and Founder, Andrew Bernstein, is a finalist for the Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2019 Award in the New England region. Widely considered one of the most prestigious business awards programs in the U.S., the program recognizes entrepreneurs and leaders of high-growth companies who are excelling in areas such as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities, while also transforming our world. Andrew Bernstein was selected as a finalist by a panel of independent judges. Award winners will be announced at a special gala event on June 26 at the Westin Waterfront in Boston, Massachusetts.

Andrew Bernstein is a serial entrepreneur, having led two AI software companies to market leadership and subsequent acquisition. Inspired by a vision to promote profitable sustainability, in 2009 Bernstein founded Kearsarge Energy, an Independent Power Producer (IPP) which develops, finances, owns and operates renewable energy projects.

Kearsarge’s mission is to create public-private partnerships that benefit communities and the environment. Kearsarge typically uses publicly owned brownfields and Super Fund sites that have limited — if any — utility for local communities, transforming those properties into a revenue-generating asset for all stakeholders. Kearsarge often improves public land as part of a solar project, having installed bike paths, walking paths and other improvements to land adjacent to its solar fields. When the solar project is complete, the land is restored to its original condition, and in many cases improved, while generating revenue for the owner for the duration of the solar project.

Bernstein notes, “I am proud of what Kearsarge and its many public and private sector partners and dedicated and brilliant staff have been able to achieve over the last several years. Although I am thrilled to have been named a finalist, I am acutely aware that many others had a significant hand in building Kearsarge’s renewable energy business. One of the most critical learnings in my personal journey is that no entrepreneur succeeds alone.”

Now in its 33rd year, the program has expanded to recognize business leaders in more than 145 cities and more than 60 countries throughout the world.

Regional award winners are eligible for consideration for the Entrepreneur Of The Year National competition. Award winners in several national categories, as well as the Entrepreneur Of The Year National Overall Award winner, will be announced at the Entrepreneur Of The Year National Awards gala in Palm Springs, California, on Nov. 16, 2019. The awards are the culminating event of the Strategic Growth Forum®, the nation’s most prestigious gathering of high-growth, market-leading companies.

Renowned Energy Futurist Jack Uldrich will address Wabash Valley Power in Indianapolis, IN.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 7, 2017

Global Futurist Jack Uldrich says, “The future often has a funny way of turning out differently than most people expect.”

The difference between expectations about the future and reality have been the cause of significant disruption in numerous industries.

The Utilities Industry is poised for an extraordinary change in the years ahead–what has served the industry well in the past won’t be sufficient for remaining competitive in the future.

JACK ULDRICH, FUTURIST & FOUNDER OF THE SCHOOL OF UNLEARNING

Regarding “expecting the unexpected” in the utility industry, back in 2009 Uldrich said, “It is conventional wisdom that the world’s energy needs will grow significantly in the years ahead and the only way to meet this growing need is to build more coal and nuclear power plants. This future may come to pass but what if Smart Grid technology, LED lights, real-time pricing, and home networks dramatically reduce energy usage?”

Fast forward to 2017, the trends he mentioned in 2009 are dramatically reducing energy usage.

Uldrich is now asking, “What if the abundance of electrical power—and not its scarcity—is the greatest problem facing the industry in the future?

Is the Utility Industry is prepared for such a future? He says, “The time to begin thinking about these accelerating changes is not in a few years. The time is now.”

Today, he will deliver a keynote on the future of the industry for the Wabash Valley Power Association in Indianapolis, IN. They bill themselves as “a deliberately different kind of electric company.”

Uldrich will discuss with them how emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Wearable Devices, the Internet of Things, and new Blockchain Technology could impact utilities in some unexpected ways.

As a leading energy futurist, Uldrich has addressed dozens of service associations. He has delivered customized keynote presentations to the American Public Power Association, the Northwest Public Power Association, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Wisconsin Public Power, San Diego Gas & Electric, Southern Company, Northwestern Energy, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, Idaho Power, Northwestern Energy, and the Western Energy Institute.

To achieve net zero energy, a building is designed efficiently to reduce energy usage, then utilizes renewable energy to produce enough energy to meet its annual consumption requirements.

With Howard County’s goals in mind, Pfister Energy designed, engineered, and constructed rooftop and ground mounted solar systems, placing each panel at optimum tilt for maximum sun absorption and output.

William Cole, President of Pfister Energy of Baltimore noted, “Pfister Energy presented unique qualifications, bringing over 10 years of commercial solar experience that evolved from a 100 year old commercial roofing company.  Our expertise in roof integrated solar as well as our experience in ground mounted solar was the winning combination that Howard County was looking for.”

The new solar arrays are expected to produce over 826,000 kWh in the first year and more than 19 million kWh over a 25-year period.  Wilde Lake Middle School’s solar plan was specifically designed to work with additional renewable and energy management solutions (natural daylighting, geo thermal, lighting and building controls) creating a “stackable energy” approach that will offset power consumed on-site and therefore, eliminate the need to buy electricity from the grid.

The new school is nearly 30,000 square feet larger, expected to house 49% more studeMr. Cole concluded, “Statistics show the buildings sector is the primary energy consumer in the U.S. With growing concerns about the stability of our energy grid, fluctuating energy prices, and the impact on our environment, targeting this sector for net zero energy design is the key to minimizing the nation’s energy requirements. We are honored to have been chosen to work on the Wilde Lake Middle School project and are eager to share their story to educate and inspire others.”nts, and use 50% less energy than the old location.
