  • Australia charges teen over online threat as Israeli president due to visit

    An Australian teenager has been charged for allegedly making online threats against Israeli President Isaac Herzog, whose visit to the country on Sunday has been met with planned protests, police complaints over alleged war crimes, and efforts to have his invitation revoked.

    Australian Federal Police said in a statement on Thursday that the 19-year-old allegedly made the threats on a social media platform last month “towards a foreign head of state and internationally protected person”.

    Police did not name the intended target of the alleged threats, but Australian media widely reported they were directed at Herzog.

    The teenager was refused police bail and will appear before a court in Sydney on Thursday. The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail, police said in the statement.

    Herzog is due to arrive in Australia on Sunday for a five-day visit, following an invitation by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the aftermath of the shooting of 15 people attending a Jewish festival at Sydney’s Bondi Beach in December.

    The visit by Herzog – who is expected to meet survivors and the families of the victims of the shooting – has drawn strong opposition from pro-Palestine groups and those opposing Israel’s genocide in Gaza, with protests against the visit planned across some two dozen Australian cities, according to reports.

    David Shoebridge, Greens party senator for New South Wales (NSW), home to Sydney, said the Albanese government “needs to withdraw this invitation now”.

    “They should not have invited Herzog to Australia. Now the police are saying they have concerns about how his visit will cause ‘significant animosity’,” Shoebridge said in a post on social media on Wednesday.

    Shoebridge had tried in the state Senate to move a motion calling on Prime Minister Albanese’s government to revoke Herzog’s invitation.

    “He has literally signed bombs used in the genocide in Gaza,” Shoebridge said of the Israeli president.

    NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon announced on Tuesday that restrictions on protests would be extended in advance of the Israeli leader’s visit, stating, “I know that there is significant animosity about President Herzog’s visit.”

    The Palestine Action Group has called on supporters to attend a rally in Sydney on Monday, urging people to march to the New South Wales state parliament in what is described as a “mass, peaceful gathering”.

    An Australian and two Palestinian legal groups formally called on the Australian Federal Police last month to investigate Herzog for his alleged role in war crimes in Gaza.

    The Australian Centre for International Justice, Al-Haq and the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights said that they had written to “urgently alert” Australian police of their concerns “in light of serious and credible criminal allegations of incitement to genocide and advocating genocide” by Herzog amid Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7, 2023.

  • Indonesia suspends TikTok’s operating licence for allegedly withholding data

    Indonesia has suspended TikTok’s operational registration status in the country, alleging that the social media platform did not fully co-operate with a request to share its data during nationwide protests in August. In a , Alexander Sabar, an official from Indonesia’s digital and communications ministry, said TikTok had violated national laws by only providing partial data while the protests were ongoing between August 23 and 30.

    Sabar said TikTok was given until September 23 to hand over its data related to traffic, streaming and monetization, after it emerged that some accounts with links to online gambling may have profited from TikTok livestreams during the protests. All forms of gambling are illegal under Indonesian law. TikTok reportedly that it couldn’t provide all of the requested data due to internal policy. The app has now been temporarily suspended, although claims that TikTok remains accessible in the country for now.

    Anger about the state of Indonesia’s economy, widespread police brutality and a number of government policies sparked August’s violent protests. TikTok its live feature for a number of days during the unrest in an attempt to keep the platform a “safe and civil space.” The app has over 100 million users in the country.

    Sabar gave no indication as to how long the ban will last. As reported by , a spokesperson for TikTok said the company respects the laws of the countries it operates in, and added that it’s working with the digital ministry to find a resolution.

  • Instagram finally has an iPad app 15 years after it first launched

    The social media platform Instagram as a native app. It only took 15 years, as the app first launched all the way back in 2010. We knew and, well, now it’s here.

    The iPad is a different platform from a smartphone, so the tablet-based app features redesigned elements. For instance, the app opens directly into a feed of Reels. The iPad app also lets users organize posts and Reels into a chronological list, with recent posts appearing first. This is how social media used to work, before the almighty algos started choosing stuff for us. This “new” feature has also begun popping up once again on the standard app.

    Otherwise, the redesign takes full advantage of the increased screen real estate. Comments on Reels will appear right next to the videos and the DMs page will include the inbox alongside the actual chat. This is reminiscent of how the web client of Messenger works.

    This move is fascinating, as two years ago Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the iPad simply wasn’t a big enough market to fast track an app. “It’s still just not a big enough group of people to be a priority,” . “Hoping to get to it at some point, but right now we’re very heads down on other things.”

    David Zandi, the founder of Miami-based 501(c)(3) organization dzQuest.org, has announced an agreement with Hyperlink Infosystem to develop a social media platform tailored for the Gen Z and Electronic Dance Music (EDM) communities. Code-named “WinterDew,” the project began development on Oct. 10. The project is expected to be completed in March 2023.

    Hyperlink Infosystem’s key clients include Google, Discovery, Viacom, Disney and BBC. This partnership will allow dzQuest to create a much-needed service for the Gen Z and EDM communities, while creating opportunities for Miami-Dade county.

    “We are very excited to be working with Hyperlink Infosystem on this project,” said Zandi. “I wanted a platform for genuine connections between real-life friends and a place where Gen Z can be themselves and find acceptance.”

    Zandi, a marketing executive specializing in Gen Z campaigns, has spent the past eight years working for global conglomerates, setting up local campaigns in 111 countries. The brands remain steadfast and united in supporting the social media platform initiatives by providing funding and resources for the music festival and other events to be hosted by David Zandi. Zandi intends to invest future advertising revenue toward initiatives for Gen Z. This includes giving away VIP passes to the Ultra, Tomorrowland and EDC music festivals, Burning Man, and a planned 2,000-unit affordable housing tower in Miami.

    Since the conception of this platform, there has been great interest from both sides of the aisle in D.C., in the potential application of this platform to engage future voters. This application has the potential to revolutionize the way campaigns are run by making it easier for candidates to connect with future voters.

    In the coming weeks, a major bank will be selected to become the official payment processor and to integrate the social media platform with their banking system. This deal is expected to generate $700 million in revenue in 2023 for the banking partner. In December, a traditional media company will receive broadcast rights to the exclusive music festivals hosted by David Zandi. This deal will generate $800 million from advertising revenue for the media company in 2023 from the 40 festivals.

    Zandi’s photography and volunteerism have always been about giving back to the local community. To that end, he is launching an NFT campaign to highlight his past work and raise funds for his charity. Each NFT will be listed for 33 ETH, with his iconic 9/11 badge being listed for 3,333 ETH.
