    BOSTON — The state Senate is poised to approve a plan to restrict efforts to ban books from public libraries and schools in response to a rise in challenges from parents and conservative groups.

    The “free expression” legislation, which cleared the Senate Ways and Means Committee on Thursday with bipartisan support, would make Massachusetts one of a handful of states to effectively outlaw book bans because of “personal, political or doctrinal” views by setting new restrictions on receiving state funding.

  • Trump Says Xi Will Help Fight Fentanyl. Will China Follow Through?

    For years, the U.S. and China have been locked in a pattern on the deadly issue of fentanyl. The White House pressures Beijing to stop Chinese companies from exporting chemicals used to make the drug to Mexico. Beijing takes incremental steps in exchange for Washington dialing down economic pressure—only for China to drag its feet when relations deteriorate.

    President Trump, after a summit on Thursday with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, said tariffs he had imposed on China over its role in the fentanyl trade would be lowered to 10% from 20% because of Beijing’s “very strong action” in cracking down and Xi’s commitment to do more.

    HAVERHILL — A petition with nearly 1,200 signatures from concerned residents and property owners is calling to stop a proposed 24-bed men’s substance use and mental health facility from moving into the neighborhood.

    The petition, posted on Change.org and titled “Stop Riverbend House from coming into our neighborhood,” urges Haverhill residents to oppose Riverbend’s plan to open the “Bradford House” at 11 Kingsbury Ave.

    The anti-Israel encampments on the quad are mostly gone, but we’re starting to learn what happened behind the scenes when universities let antisemitism run rampant on campus. Records recently obtained from the University of Arizona show the school’s faculty threw in with pro-Palestinian protesters in the months after Oct. 7, 2023.

    Arizona-based researcher Brian Anderson issued the Freedom of Information Act request in May 2024 for university communications on such keywords as “Israel,” “Palestine,” “Gaza,” “Hamas,” “Anti-Semitism” and “Jewish.” Mr. Anderson says the school refused the request until his lawyer sent a demand letter. It later produced nearly 1,000 documents with many names redacted. The university didn’t respond to our request for comment.

    The emails reveal that on Oct. 11, 2023, then-Arizona President Robert Robbins issued an unequivocal statement addressing “the horrendous acts of terrorism by Hamas in Israel.” Mr. Robbins called the massacre “antisemitic hatred, murder, and a complete atrocity” and called out Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) for “endorsing the actions of Hamas.”

    For that moment of principled clarity, Mr. Robbins was criticized by the faculty. On Oct. 12, faculty chair Leila Hudson received an email from a professor (name redacted) who expressed “concern” that “President Robbins email and others’ smears are chilling SJP dissent.” (Mr. Robbins had noted that while SJP didn’t speak for the university, the group has “the constitutional right to hold their views and to express them in a safe environment.”)

  • Zoning overlay for Lifebridge shelter expansion receives first passage

    SALEM — The ordinance to create a project-based zoning overlay to expand the Lifebridge homeless shelter on Margin Street received first passage and was returned to committee by the City Council with a 9-2 vote.

    Through the adoption of a 40R Smart Growth Overlay District, the project seeks to expand the Lifebridge shelter to provide the formerly homeless with a more humane shelter than the current congregate model that places 50 bunk beds in a large, open interior space with shared facilities and little privacy.

  • Salem Pantry to increase regional food storage capacity through $2 million grant

    SALEM — The Salem Pantry will soon lease a 20,000-square-foot warehouse with five times the food storage capacity of the organization’s current warehouse with the help of a $2 million grant.

    The new warehouse, strategically located on Highland Avenue at the border of Peabody and Lynn, will provide warehouse space, cold storage, and distribution infrastructure for up to 20 additional emergency food distribution partners in lower Essex County, according to the Greater Boston Food Bank.

    On Thursday, Healey announced that state and local enforcement officials have thwarted attempted car “meet ups” in the state over the past week through online investigations that resulted in arrests and hundreds of traffic citations.
