  • Immigration experts share how locals can push back against Trump’s actions

    [ad_1]

MARBLEHEAD โ€” A panel of local immigration experts shared ways people can push back against President Donald Trumpโ€™s immigration crackdown, including donating to legal defense funds for immigrants or volunteering to accompany local immigrants to court hearings.

During a panel discussion on immigration enforcement Tuesday night, experts said citizens can also challenge local police departmentsโ€™ use of security technology from companies like Flock Security, which allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement to access license plate data collected by local law enforcement.

  • Advocates seek to ease license suspension rules

    [ad_1]

BOSTON โ€” Massachusetts is among a minority of states where you can lose your driverโ€™s license for unpaid parking tickets, tolls and other minor violations.

But advocates want to change that. A proposal on Beacon Hill would effectively end debt-based driving restrictions by prohibiting the state Registry of Motor Vehicles from suspending driversโ€™ licenses over unpaid fines for non-criminal infractions.

  • DiZoglio to sue MassPort over settlement details

    [ad_1]

BOSTON โ€” State Auditor Diana DiZoglio said she plans to sue the agency that oversees Logan International Airport, accusing officials of withholding details of settlements with state employees her office was seeking for a required audit.

DiZoglio released an audit on Wednesday that found the Massachusetts Port Authority entered into a $1.37 million settlement agreement in 2022 which her office says took advantage of nondisclosure laws to conceal allegations that included gender- and disability-based discrimination as well as unequal pay.

    [ad_1]

DANVERS โ€” Community members gathered in the Danvers High School atrium on Monday for the townโ€™s annual โ€œMove Like Kingโ€ celebration, not just to reflect on the legacy of MLK Jr., but to consider how each individual can work to fight injustice and be a force for change.

Attendees of the event, hosted by the Danvers Human Rights & Inclusion Committee and Danvers Public Schools, were able to view a showcase of student artwork using a variety of mediums to foster dialogue about what MLK Jr.โ€™s message of peace means today, and how his dream of unity and justice is being continually worked toward.

  • MLK’s dreams are still unfulfilled, Salem State professor shares in Gloucester

    [ad_1]

GLOUCESTER โ€” Many of Martin Luther King Jr.โ€™s dreams for America are still just that, a biographer of the Civil Rights leader explained to a crowd at the Gloucester Universalist Unitarian Church on Monday afternoon.

โ€œOver a half century after his death, King matters because his social and political agenda has largely been unfulfilled,โ€ said Salem State University Professor Jamie Wilson, the author of โ€œMartin Luther King Jr.: A Life in American History.โ€

As 2026 kicks off with several unexpected geopolitical earthquakes, Europe looks woefully unprepared to deal with the upending of old rules โ€” and the new world order โ€” being created by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Less than a week into the new year and not only has the U.S. deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and threatened Colombia, Iran, Cuba and Mexico, but has also turned its sights on taking over Danish territory Greenland, potentially using military force, and threatening the very fabric and future of NATO.

Then there’s Ukraine, with European leaders’ efforts this week to cement security guarantees in a potential peace deal to end the war looking like small fry as other potential territorial takeovers garner global attention.

Largely seen as the “Old World” by the rest of the globe, Europe appears to have fallen far behind other power blocs on a number of levels, with its economy in the slow lane and its geopolitical isolation โ€” and apparent impotence โ€” in stark contrast with bullish regional superpowers like the U.S., Russia and China.

It’s a dangerous moment for Europe and the existing international order, analysts say, as the established rules-based international order is torn up.

“What happened in Venezuela and now talk about Greenland, Cuba or Colombia, we are really into getting into uncharted territory, and we have to be really extremely careful,” Wang Huiyao, founder and president at the Beijing-based Center for China and Globalization, told CNBC Wednesday.

“The international community has to work together now and probably stop this kind of unilateral approach. It’s a wake-up call for the European countries so closely allied with the U.S. who have suddenly realized now that its fundamental basis has been eroded and has been really challenged.”

    Europe senses danger

There’s no doubt that Europe knows the trouble it’s in as it confronts both the dangers of ongoing war in Ukraine, and an elusive peace deal, as well as the real possibility of a confrontation with the U.S. over Greenland, which belongs to EU and NATO member Denmark.

European leaders met on Tuesday to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, but also issued a statement pushing back against any American territorial ambitions over the Arctic island, insisting: “Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”

A flurry of fraught diplomacy ensued on Wednesday morning, with France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noรซl Barrot stating that he had spoken to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The French politician said Rubio had “ruled out the possibility of what happened in Venezuela happening in Greenland.”

Trump's Greenland threats sparks European condemnation

Rubio reportedly told lawmakers at a closed briefing on Capitol Hill on Monday that the Trump administration did not plan to invade Greenland, but aimed to buy it from Denmark, the Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday.

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNBC on Tuesday that the administration was considering “a range of options” in order toย acquire Greenlandย โ€” including “utilizing the U.S. Military.”ย

Greenland and Denmark have requested a meeting with Rubio to discuss the U.S.’ intentions. On Monday, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that “ifย the U.S. chooses to attack another NATO country, everythingย will stop.”

    Existential crisis?

It’s not the first time that the transatlantic partnership has looked shaky under Trump’s leadership, with the president barely containing his disdain for Europe’s perceived shortfalls in recent years, particularly when it comes to defense spending, investment, and economic prowess.

In December, the U.S. warned in its new national security strategy (NSS) that the region faced oblivion. Trump then called Europe’s leaders “weak” and said the region was “decaying.”

European officials responded to Trump’s comments with irritation, but the uncomfortable question was whether the U.S. had a point.

In its NSS, the U.S. listed Europe’s waning economy, migration policies, and “loss of national identities and self-confidence” as reasons to worry for the continent. It then warned that European countries faced “civilizational erasure” and questioned whether they can “remain reliable allies.”

Trump vs. Europe: President brands Europe 'weak'

Ian Bremmer, founder and president of the political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, told CNBC that Washington was essentially telling Europe not only what it already knew, but what it was already trying to fix.

“Civilizational erasure’ sounds offensive, but many European leaders โ€“ in France, Germany, Italy โ€“ have been raising similar concerns for years. In fact, EU migration policy has tightened considerably since [former Chancellor Angela] Merkel’s open-door approach,” he told CNBC.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen meets with U.S. President Donald Trump during the 80th United Nations General Assembly, in New York City, New York, U.S., Sept. 23, 2025.

“The key difference is that Europeans want to address these and other challenges by making Europe stronger, not by tearing it apart,” Bremmer said.

“European leaders see this for what it is,” he added.

“If Washington is no longer aligned with Europe on values Europeans consider essential, then the United States can no longer be counted on as an ally. That’s an existential crisis for the transatlantic alliance … What the Europeans are prepared to do about it is another matter entirely.”

    [ad_1]

The bag Emily Karst keeps in her car is filled with everything but her phone.

Instead, she usually packs her journal, some watercolor supplies, a needlepoint kit, a reading light and a murder mystery-themed puzzle book.

Karst, 32, calls it her โ€œanalog bag,โ€ and sheโ€™s not the only one rocking one this year. Many people say carrying the accessory โ€” typically packed with hobby supplies rather than electronic devices โ€” has become their way to minimize their screen time.

โ€œEven when Iโ€™m home and my analog bag is over on the hook, when Iโ€™m like, โ€˜OK, what do I want to do?โ€™ that neural pathway that used to say, โ€˜Well, grab your phone,โ€™ is starting to fire with the urge to maybe do needlepoint,โ€ said Karst, who is an assistant principal at an elementary school in Ohio.

The popularity of the bag reflects a broader shift in 2025: People have generally become more intuitive about how much of their time they want to spend online. By turning to nondigital activities for entertainment, theyโ€™re trying to unplug, reclaim their attention spans and find renewed fulfillment in real-life experiences.

Ironically, those who choose to step away from the internet have also turned to social media to document their digital detox journeys. In addition to showing off their โ€œanalog bags,โ€ some social media users have started online movements around the concept of returning to nondigital activities, from junk journaling โ€” a type of scrapbooking that often involves pasting in found or recycled ephemera โ€” to โ€œrawdogging boredom,โ€ a trend in which people challenge themselves to simply sit around and do nothing.

There has also been an appetite from consumers for mobile apps and tech products aimed at combating doomscrolling, or the tendency to scroll excessively online, which often entails heavy consumption of depressing content.

YouTuber Hank Greenโ€™s Focus Friend app, which topped the Apple App Store charts earlier this year, gives users a little bean on their phones that knits more items the longer the user keeps away from certain blocked apps. Also generating buzz this year was a small app-blocking device called the Brick, which locks users out of distracting apps and websites until they touch their phones to the Brick to deactivate the locks.

โ€œI think weโ€™re all craving to just get back into community and real life, like real, tangible relationships. Everyoneโ€™s so online now that itโ€™s hurting my soul,โ€ said Maddie DeVico, a small-business owner in Colorado. โ€œThereโ€™s a huge movement here. I think the culture is starting to shift and people are realizing how detrimental being constantly connected can be for your mental health at the end of the day.โ€

To combat her own social media addiction, DeVico, 31, took some clay and molded a physical dock for her to โ€œhang upโ€ her cellphone like a landline when she has no pressing need for it. It reminded her of her childhood, when phones were tied to a designated place, like the kitchen wall.

When she shared the idea on TikTok this summer, a wave of viewers responded by creating and posting about their own copycat phone docks. Now, DeVico said, she hangs up her phone in its clay dock every night. She tries to implement phone-free mornings and phone-free dinners, as well as a few phone-free zones in her home.

Aside from finding more time for hobbies such as writing, painting and cooking, DeVico said, the habit has also enabled her to get excited about the little things again โ€” like spotting a roly-poly in her garden.

Others have touted similar attempts to physically separate themselves from their phones. One writer, Tiffany Ng, chronicled her experience chaining her phone to the wall for a week. Tech founder Cat Goetze, who goes by CatGPT online, built a Bluetooth-compatible landline phone and surpassed $120,000 in sales within the first three days of its July launch.

What many people misunderstand about the no-phone movement, Goetze said, is that it doesnโ€™t require an all-or-nothing approach: โ€œThereโ€™s a lot of people who say: โ€˜Just get a flip phone. Take this supercomputer, chuck it into the ocean and go back to the โ€™90s and just get a dumb phone again.โ€™โ€

โ€œWhat I realized is that the thing that actually works is balance, and balance doesnโ€™t mean getting rid of your smartphone,โ€ Goetze said. โ€œItโ€™s about putting external factors in place that make your smartphone less easily accessible at all times.โ€

But people arenโ€™t just detoxing from their phones to boost productivity. For many, learning how to have analog fun is just as much the goal.

As DeVico put it, โ€œgrandma hobbies are so back.โ€ Tutorials on crocheting, knitting, scrapbooking and other forms of crafting have found sustained success on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Meanwhile, social clubs organized around everything from books to running to mahjong have exploded in popularity in recent years.

Shun Hawkins, 31, loves junk journaling. In her analog bag, she packs stickers, washi tape and fashion magazine clippings to collage. She brings the bag out when she wants to immerse herself in a day of crafting, keeping a doodle book and a Nickelodeon-themed coloring book complete with a box of colored pencils and felt-tip pens inside.

โ€œItโ€™s reawakened something in me that I feel like I lost a long time ago. I didnโ€™t even go to school for something that Iโ€™m passionate about. And now, being 31, being at home and being able to do things like junk journaling and doodling again, thatโ€™s reigniting this passion for me โ€” even wanting to go back to school just to take on fashion,โ€ said Hawkins, who lives in Tennessee. โ€œSomething like that, I feel like it wouldnโ€™t be possible if I wasnโ€™t detaching myself from social media.โ€

Another silver lining for Hawkins: More crafting has meant less doomscrolling. One recent morning, she found herself reorganizing the trinkets in her room upon waking up instead of immediately reaching for her phone.

The urge to go analog has also become a selling point at social events and in nightlife.

Hush Harbor, a cocktail bar in Washington, D.C., began offering its patrons a rare experience by prohibiting cellphones within the establishment to encourage people to be more present and better connect with their communities.

Christa Eduafo, a New York-based DJ who goes by DJ Chvmeleon, has also had success with her monthly phone-free parties, which she launched in June.

The goal, she said, is to revive a culture in which people feel comfortable enough to dance and let loose without fearing that they might be photographed or recorded by a stranger.

โ€œThereโ€™s more of an interest in capturing a moment to post later than experiencing a moment in real time, and thatโ€™s impacting the real-time experience,โ€ Eduafo said. โ€œSo itโ€™s almost like everyoneโ€™s going to an event or to a bar because maybe they saw it on TikTok and they saw that there might be a moment they could capture and post themselves. But if thereโ€™s a room full of people waiting for something to capture, then thereโ€™s nothing to capture.โ€

Goetze, who also hosted a โ€œno-phone partyโ€ in Los Angeles this fall that drew more than 700 people, said the concept forced people to interact with one another without being able to pull out their phones as a social crutch. She noted that it made the experience โ€œone of the most present events that I have attended in a really long time.โ€

She plans a small tour of no-phone parties elsewhere next year. It has become clearer than ever, she said, that people are desperate to form real-life connections again.

“They’re craving the ability to be present with others. It shows up in every aspect of our lives. And weโ€™re going to get there through a variety of different factors,โ€ Goetze said. โ€œWeโ€™re going to get there through physical events; weโ€™re going to get there through reconnecting with our hobbies and spending time in groups. And I do feel very strongly that the solution is not just about getting rid of something. You have to add something new.โ€

  • Democrats vow to challenge ban on gender-affirming care

    [ad_1]

BOSTON โ€” Foreshadowing a legal challenge, Massachusetts Attorney General Campbell is joining a chorus of criticism over the Trump administrationโ€™s move to effectively ban gender-affirming care for minors at hospitals that depend on federal funding.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued new regulations that would once finalized, restrict the use of puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgical interventions for transgender children.

  • Markey blasts ‘inadequate’ conditions at ICE facility

    [ad_1]

BOSTON โ€” Sen. Ed Markey is renewing criticism of federal authorities for โ€œinhumaneโ€ conditions at a Burlington ICE facility where people detained on immigration violations are held before being transferred to other locations.

In a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcementโ€™s Boston acting Field Office Director David Wesling, Markey said after a meeting with him and other officials Dec. 11 he โ€œcontinues to be alarmed by the allegations of overcrowding and inadequate conditionsโ€ at the Burlington facility, โ€œas well as by ICEโ€™s arrest dragnet.โ€

  • Healthy Life: Ending the day on a positive note: How news can support mental health

    [ad_1]

In Finland, some parents have adopted a bedtime routine that seems almost too simple to matter. Each night, they ask their children one question: โ€œWhat was the last good moment of your day?โ€ No screens, no lectures, no moralizing, just a moment to pause and reflect.

Psychologists who followed families practicing this ritual for 10 years found remarkable results. Children who answered the question daily were up to 80 percent less anxious by the time they reached their teenage years. Ending the day on a calm note helps the brain wrap up its stress cycle, allowing children to sleep more peacefully and recover emotionally from the dayโ€™s challenges.

The story recently became popular on social media, but it also makes us think about something bigger: why donโ€™t the media talk more about such easy and helpful ways to take care of our mental health? In a news world focused on major crises and troubling stories, reporters donโ€™t often highlight positive developments happening around the world.

The hidden cost of daily news

Newsrooms have long followed the mantra: โ€œIf it bleeds, it leads.โ€ Stories about crime, disasters, or conflict grab attention – and clicks. But reading it can really affect people’s feelings. The research has shown that many adults experience stress or discomfort when following the news, and some even limit their news consumption because they find it stressful (American Psychological Association 2023). Meanwhile, the Reuters Institute notes that โ€œnews avoidanceโ€ is rising globally, as people deliberately turn away from stories that make them feel overwhelmed.

The paradox is clear: journalism aims to inform and empower the public, yet relentless coverage of negative events can leave readers anxious, helpless, or disengaged. Ignoring these effects undercuts the basic mission of the press.

Learning from Finland: A different approach

The Finnish bedtime ritual offers a useful metaphor for journalism. Just like children think about their day before going to sleep, readers can better understand the news if stories include background information, ideas for fixing problems, and messages of hope.

This is the philosophy behind solutions journalism, promoted by groups like the Solutions Journalism Network. It doesnโ€™t mean sugar-coating problems or avoiding hard truths. Instead, it means telling the full story, highlighting not just the problem but also credible responses and examples of success.

For instance, when reporting on youth anxiety, a journalist could explore programs in schools, community initiatives, or national policies that help children build resilience. Research from the University of Texas at Austinโ€™s Engaging News Project found that readers of solutions-focused articles felt more optimistic about the issue and more confident that there were effective ways to address it, compared with readers who only saw problem-focused news. Engaging audiences this way also strengthens trust in media, an important advantage at a time when many people doubt the news.

    Small shifts, big impact

In many ways, journalism can borrow inspiration from the Finnish habit of ending the day with a moment of reflection. Itโ€™s a simple cultural practice, not a rule, but it shows how small habits can shape how people process the world around them and be less anxious.

Similarly, there are a few modest adjustments journalists can consider when thinking about how audiences absorb the news:

Language: choosing clear, calm wording instead of dramatic phrasing when covering difficult subjects.

Balance: showing not only the problem, but also what people or communities are trying in response.

Context: helping readers understand why something is happening, not only that it happened.

Follow-up: returning to stories so people see what changed over time.

They are reflections on how reporting might support a clearer and more grounded understanding of events. And just as the Finnish ritual helps families end the day with perspective, these small journalistic choices can help audiences navigate the news with a better coherence.

    Real-world examples

Some news outlets are already using solutions journalism. The Guardianโ€™s Upside series, BBCโ€™s People Fixing the World, and CBCโ€™s What On Earth? spotlight serious issues, like climate, health, and inequality, while focusing on real-world innovations and responses. These programs illustrate that news can inform without overwhelming, by highlighting constructive change.

    Closing the cycle

In a world where headlines bombard us with crisis after crisis, journalism can offer closure. Just as the Finnish ritual encourages children to reflect on a positive moment before sleep, journalists can help audiences finish the news cycle feeling informed rather than exhausted. The goal isnโ€™t โ€œfeel-good newsโ€ – itโ€™s resilience and understanding in an age of constant noise.

Journalism has always been about sharing information. Today, it can also help improve our mental well-being, one calming story at a time.

CALI, Colombiaโ€”They see themselves as the cowboys of the drug trade, highly experienced crews that ferry narcotics on small boats across the open seas, running on a mix of bravado, skill and dreams of a massive payday.

Now, designated as terrorists by the Trump administration, they face not only the perils of a capricious sea but the new danger of getting blown out of the water by the U.S. military. The tradeโ€™s unofficial mottoโ€”โ€œdeliver or dieโ€โ€”has never rung so true.
