Barça defenders Koundé, Araújo injured on national duty

    [ad_1]

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona defenders Jules Koundé and Ronald Araújo are sidelined for an undetermined period after sustaining leg injuries while playing for their national teams.

Barcelona said on Saturday that medical tests revealed Koundé has a left hamstring injury after playing for France in its 2-0 win over Austria in the Nations League on Thursday.

Araújo damaged a tendon in his right thigh, the club said, during Uruguay’s 1-0 loss to Iran on Friday.

The defenders were examined by Barcelona club doctors after returning from their national teams. Barcelona did not say how long it expects both to be out.

The two have been regular starters for coach Xavi Hernández.

Their injuries leave Xavi with Éric García, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Pique as center backs. Koundé, who also plays at right back, can be replaced by newcomer Héctor Bellerín or veteran Sergi Roberto.

Over the next three weeks, Barcelona faces two Champions League group games against Inter Milan and a clásico against Real Madrid on Oct. 16.

  • Morgan’s School of Global Journalism and Communication Launches Black Soccerlab

Morgan’s School of Global Journalism and Communication Launches Black Soccerlab

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Mar 21, 2022

Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication today announced the launch of Black SoccerLab, a think tank dedicated to the study of soccer in the African American community and across the African diaspora.

With a concentration on research, media programming and service, Black SoccerLab’s mission is to share the narratives of the Black soccer community and showcase its development around the world. The lab, which will operate from the SGJC’s Center for the Study of Race and Culture in Sports, shall highlight stories, examine issues and document history.

Black SoccerLab is introduced at an unprecedented time where African Americans are identifying as soccer fans in larger numbers and participating in the sport at every level. Morgan State professor Edward G. Robinson III, the director of the Center, will manage Black SoccerLab and support student-directed projects.

“Soccer is beloved by black people all around the world, and we want to capture that excitement and explore the evolution of that tradition in our research and projects,” Robinson said. “We have a tremendous opportunity to collect and disseminate information about an unexplored community. As a think tank, there are so many ways to engage. We plan to connect with the pulse of the Black soccer community and share the message.”

Instrumental to Black SoccerLab’s integration into this space, the Center has partnered with advisors Akbar Majeed, founder of Concrete2Green, and Irv Smalls Jr., executive director of F.C. Harlem – two soccer executives with long-time ties to the Black soccer community.

“The Black SoccerLab is a groundbreaking platform for Black people to drive the narratives that are important to us around the world’s most popular sport and its growth in the United States,” Smalls said. “Our participation and impact in the sport requires a perspective that is uniquely ours.”

Soccer is the world’s most popular sport and its roots run deep across the African diaspora. Americans, however, have traditionally passed on soccer.

Over the past 30 years, the sport has developed modestly in the American marketplace, enough to support the growth of Major League Soccer. Still, many American sports fans have held soccer at arms-length. They choose football, basketball and baseball ahead of soccer.

African Americans have yet to fully adopt soccer. The future, however, portends another outcome. Across America, the number of black soccer players continues to grow, evidence by their collective increased participation in youth soccer, college soccer, Major League Soccer and the U.S. National Team. Black sports fans, who have traditionally measured just a blip on the radar, are finding their way to the pitch.

Black SoccerLab is well-positioned to monitor that growth. Concrete2Green founder Akbar Majeed has actively worked at the grassroots level to help bolster that growth.

“It’s important for us to create our own properties like Black SoccerLab that offer authentic engagement and access to the Black community,” Majeed said. “I’m excited about our partnership with MSU especially because of the rich history HBCU’s have had in being in the forefront of cultural empowerment.”

  • Super Soccer Stars Announces Up to 5,000 Free Online Classes to Front-Line Medical Workers and Affected Families Nationwide Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Super Soccer Stars Announces Up to 5,000 Free Online Classes to Front-Line Medical Workers and Affected Families Nationwide Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 13, 2020

Effective today, Soccer Stars has launched Soccer Stars for All, making available up to 5,000 open spots in its online classes free to front-line medical workers, families negatively impacted by school closures and families who can benefit from financial assistance.

“We recognize that families around the world are facing financial and workplace hardships due to the coronavirus pandemic and we want to help,” said Adam Geisler, Chief Executive Officer of Super Soccer Stars. “So we are thrilled to announce that we have launched our Soccer Stars for All initiative, which will make online classes more accessible to families whose caregivers are front line workers or are otherwise struggling to keep their children happy, healthy, active and engaged.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting “social distancing” efforts that have closed schools and recreation programs across the United States, Soccer Stars has stepped up their offerings of athletic coaching and activities for children by developing a digital curriculum, which keeps children’s bodies and minds active while at the same time incorporating socialization with coaches, classmates and teammates to encourage safe, social interaction.

“During the past two months when students remained home without being provided the physical education portion of their school’s mandate, Soccer Stars has actively invested in online video, live streaming coaching sessions and other digital activities in order to continue serving families, as we have done for the last 20 years,” said Geisler. “Like most small businesses, we have had to make many difficult decisions, but moving soccer classes online has allowed us to keep our coaches engaged and employed, and more than anything, they continue to make kids smile every day.”

The Soccer Stars for All initiative is providing up to 5,000 spots in virtual classes for children ages 1-12 and is taking place between May 20, 2020 and June 28, 2020.  Enrollment in current virtual classes with available capacity will be on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to one class per week per child throughout the duration of the program.

Families of front-line medical workers and those who are experiencing hardship as a result of the coronavirus pandemic who would like to apply for these classes can fill out the application online at https://bit.ly/3bhDBGW.

New York-based Super Soccer Stars was founded in 2000 and is the largest corporately run youth soccer program in the country. Super Soccer Stars’ goal is to use the soccer ball as a vehicle to help children improve their soccer skills while at the same time building self-confidence, enhancing gross motor skills, honing socialization skills, and developing physical literacy. Dynamic local and international coaches work with small groups of boys and girls to develop these skills and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Super Soccer Stars operates in 25+ major markets reaching over 110,000 children each year. Additional information is available at http://www.soccerstars.com.
