    A new blog post from Samsung highlights how its Galaxy Z Flip series devices are being adopted by law enforcement. The line of foldable mobile devices was part of a pilot program at the Kimberling City Police and the Indian Point Police in Missouri two years ago to test how the electronics could improve the forces’ daily operations. According to Samsung, the program was the first time a foldable device was used by police as a bodycam. After the end of the pilot program, two more police departments signed on to use the Flip devices as bodycams. The solutions from those pilot tests are also being extended to 25 metro police departments in five states.

    The Flip devices used for the police testing were customized in a collaboration with Visual Labs, a company that repurposes mobile devices for use as body and dash cameras. The modifications, like remapping the volume button to start the camera, were intended to make it easier and faster to begin recording in the field, according to Samsung.

    It’s a surprising use case for Samsung to emphasize for its US audience. The Verge picked up on the blog post and was also quick to cite an investigation from ProPublica and The New York Times that demonstrated how local policies can negate the positive value of bodycams, either delaying or preventing footage from being released.

    That said, Samsung is hardly the only tech company that has gotten involved with making its products part of law enforcement. Amazon-owned smart doorbell company Ring had (and reversed) policies of how and what footage it would share with officers. There are also broader stories still unfolding around how law enforcement are using technologies such as facial recognition and drones.

    London — Eton College, arguably the poshest, most elite boarding school in Britain, is banning incoming students from having smartphones.  

    Eton, located near the royal palace in Windsor, just west of London, is renowned for its academic excellence. Notable alumni include Princes William and Harry, as well as novelist George Orwell, James Bond creator Ian Fleming and a long list of former prime ministers, including recent leaders Boris Johnson and David Cameron.  

    The ban, which is due to take effect in September, comes after the U.K. government issued guidance backing school principals who decide to ban the use of cellphones during the school day in an effort to minimize disruption and improve classroom behavior.

    Parents of first-year students at Eton — where tuition exceeds $60,000 per year — were informed of the changes in a letter, which said  that incoming 13-year-old boarders should have their smart devices taken home after their SIM cards are transferred to offline Nokia phones provided by the school, which can only make calls and send simple text messages. 

    Eton’s previous rules on smartphones required first-year students to hand over their devices overnight. 

    “Eton routinely reviews our mobile phone and devices policy to balance the benefits and challenges that technology brings to schools,” a spokesperson for the school told CBS News on Tuesday, adding that those joining in Year 9, essentially the equivalent of freshman year in high school for American students, “will receive a ‘brick’ phone for use outside the school day, as well as a school-issued iPad to support academic study.”

    The spokesperson added that “age-appropriate controls remain in place for other year groups.” 

    According to Ofcom, the U.K. government’s communications regulator, 97% of children have their own cellphone by the age of 12. 

    In the U.S., a recent survey published by Common Sense Media found around 91% of children own a smartphone by the age of 14. Similar policies on smartphones have been introduced in schools around the U.S., varying from complete bans to restricted use in specific times or areas. The 2021-2022 school year saw about 76% of schools prohibit the non-academic use of smartphones, according to the U.S. Department of Education. 

    Bans have been met with mixed reactions, as some argue these personal devices can also have curricular benefits, such as allowing students to engage in live surveys or access content and data during lessons. Some parents have also raised concerns that phone bans could prevent their children from reaching them during potential emergencies.

    Oh, the irony of the National Security Agency suggests that smartphone users turn off their phones occasionally. But the NSA is right: you do need to restart your phone regularly to rid it of demons. Some phones even let you schedule the restart, so you don’t have to think about it.

    Forbes uncovered a seriously dated NSA document outlining the best practices for keeping your phone safe from bad actors in the digital space. The phones depicted are a 2010s-era iPhone with the original push-button Home button and a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

    Over a dozen tips are included, ranging from “considering using Biometrics” to “only use original charging cords.” It’s all fundamental stuff you’ve seen before, but the advice that’s got everyone’s ears perked up is the NSA’s suggestion to power your device off and back on weekly. It isn’t a failsafe but could help reduce zero-click exploits and malware via spearphishing.

    For those of you who are only hearing this for the first time, you can rest easy knowing that this is already a common practice among smartphone wielders.

    It’s a simple way to either force a waning software update or clear any background apps and memory leaks that might contribute to a too-hot-too-handle metal phone. I’m a frequent restarter because I have cell signal issues in my area—a quick reboot usually does the trick, though not without my heart beating rapidly as I wait to see those mobile service bars return.

    A hefty number of manufacturers have already built in the functionality to restart your phone periodically. This includes Samsung’s Galaxy devices and the latest OnePlus devices. The Google Pixel doesn’t have a scheduled offering, but there is an option you can toggle on to have the device automatically restart once it receives an over-the-air (OTA) software update. iOS users can craft an Automation that will restart the iPhone every few days.

    After a string of premium launches in the vivo V30 and V30 Pro a few weeks ago, vivo has finally launched its upper entry-level offering: the vivo Y100. How does it fare as the brand’s newest affordable device? Find out below.

    Design: 4/5 

    The vivo Y100 is available in Crystal Black and Breeze Green colorways, of which we were able to review the latter. The light green of the back panel features dynamic feather-like visual texturing which dances with the light. The matte-finish of the Fluorite AG back glass ensures a scratch- and smudge-free, but slightly slippery, handling experience. Meanwhile, the camera island is colored in glossy—not feathered—emerald green and features three stacked camera lenses and an LED flash module. The lenses protrude out as to be the first point of contact with the surface when laying the phone screen-side up. Thankfully, the vivo Y100 comes with a free clear case out of the box which provides protection to the great-looking back panel and camera modules, as well as adds much needed gripiness. 

    Up front is the huge 6.67-inch AMOLED Display with a punch hole camera along the top side and the in-display fingerprint scanner along the bottom. It also comes with a free pre-installed protective film as defense against nicks and scratches. The vivo Y100’s right edge houses the power button and volume rockers; the top has a microphone pinhole and one of the grille-less speakers; the left is bare; and the bottom has the SIM-microSD card combo tray, another microphone pinhole, a USB Type-C slot, and the other stereo speaker, this time with a grille.

    Physically, the vivo Y100 comes in either a 163.17 × 75.81 × 7.79 mm form factor for the Crystal Black version, and slightly thicker 163.17 × 75.81 × 7.95 mm for the Breeze Green color. The green one is also slightly heavier at 196g versus 186g for the black palette.

    It’s an overall solid design. However, like my gripe with other entry-level phones, the camera island design could have been made more aesthetically pleasing.

    Hardware: 4/5

    Running the vivo Y100 is a 6-nanometer octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 processor clocked at a maximum 2.8GHz on the four faster A73 cores and up to 1.9GHz on the four A53 cores. It’s quite decent—not the most powerful chipset out there, but it should handle light gaming and day-to-day use just fine. It is paired with an Adreno 610 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of microSD expandable storage.

    Display-wise, the vivo Y100 features a 6.67-inch, 2400 x 1080 FHD+ AMOLED Display with a punch hole “Dotch” cutout for the selfie shooter, pixel density of around 395ppi, a high 120Hz refresh rate, and local peak brightness of up to 1200 nits. 

    For the cameras, the vivo Y100 has a 50MP main shooter supported by a 2MP bokeh camera, a flicker sensor, an LED flash node, and electronic image stabilization available via the in-app camera settings. Up front, it has an 8MP selfie camera. Videos max out at 1080p 30fps for both front and rear lenses, with a higher frame capture rate of 60fps available at the back but only at 720p.

    The vivo Y100 is powered by a 5000mAh battery chargeable with the 80W vivo FastCharge power brick and Type-C Cable. vivo touts it can charge up to 80% in just 30 minutes.

    What stands out with the vivo Y100’s hardware are the dual stereo speakers, which not even some higher spec’d phones have. Combined with the huge screen, it should make the vivo Y100 a great device for content consumption.

    User Experience: 4/5

    The vivo Y100 encapsulates all you could want in an entry-level phone: decent performance, large and expandable storage, large screen, loud speakers, and fast charging.

    For the benchmarks, the vivo Y100 scored the following: 654 on the 3D Mark Wild Life test; 7,671 on the PCMark Work 3.0 Benchmark; 473 on the Geekbench 6 CPU Single-Core test; 1,508 on the Geekbench 6 CPU Multi-Core test; and 380 on the Geekbench 6 GPU OpenCL test. For storage, it scored 390.13 MB/s on sequential writes and 378.27 MB/s on sequential reads using the Cross Platform Disk Test. It’s certainly not the fastest phone out there, but it should get the job done.

    And get the job done it did. It is decently responsive, being able to switch between apps fluidly, thanks in part to the 120Hz display refresh rate. Lighter games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Pokemon Unite, and Asphalt 9: Legends were all easy tasks even on the highest settings. With Call of Duty Mobile and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas: The Definite Edition, settings had to be dialed back to at most medium for the experience to be as smooth as needed for the fast and dynamic on-screen action. Meanwhile, NBA 2K Mobile was just barely playable on the lowest possible graphics settings.

    For the cameras, the vivo Y100’s shooters perform decently under good lighting. Meanwhile, shots in darker or mixed-lighting scenarios were not as good, but still usable for casual social media posting. Selfies also turned out quite decent.

    In terms of battery life, the vivo Y100 lasted a lengthy 16 hours and 13 minutes on the PCMark Work 3.0 Benchmark with audio at full and brightness at 50%. Charging took around an hour to go from completely dead to 100% using the bundled 80W vivo Fast Charger.

    Where the vivo Y100 shines is as a content consumption device. Watching videos on the big 120Hz screen coupled with the dual stereo speakers is great, especially since it gets decently loud without garbling the audio.

    Value: 3.5/5 

    The vivo Y100 is priced at PHP12,499 for the 128GB variant and PHP13,999 for the 256GB option. It’s facing stiff competition in this segment, but it makes a case for itself thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate and dual stereo speakers, which are quite unique at this price point. If you want a portable binge-watching device that can chug along acceptably for day-to-day use, then definitely consider the vivo Y100.

    I never thought I’d see the day I’d become a “wearables” person, and it’s because I’ve spent so long on the Android side of things. For years, Android users waited in vain for manufacturers to make smartwatches that fit nicely and didn’t peter out after a mere eight hours off the charger. It wasn’t until these last few years after Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 4 that Android-based wearables offered feature parity to one of the most popular wearables, the Apple Watch.

    Thankfully, there is plenty more choice for wearables, not just between Apple and Android. Although some companies have left the connected wearables game—RIP Fossil and your delightful hybrid watches—plenty more remain, including mainstays from the fitness industry. Here’s a look at some of the latest smartwatches we’ve covered and which ones are worth buying if you’re shopping for one. iPhone users, you already know which one we’re going to suggest.

    I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it: you should have an Apple watch if you use an iPhone. Other smartwatches work with the iPhone, particularly for those of you who want more of a training device rather than a remote accessory for your smartphone. But for everyone else wielding an iPhone, the Apple Watch is it.

    The Apple Watch has maintained a consistent price point throughout its lifetime. The Apple Watch Series 9 currently costs $400 for the 40mm size and $430 for the 45mm size. There’s also the Apple Watch SE, a pared-down version of the flagship Apple Watch, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2, meant for rugged types who spend time outdoors or don’t mind wearing a bigger watch for the battery life.

    The battery life of Apple Watches and the best ones for Android users is about the same. You’ll almost get two full days of notifications and time-telling, mainly if you use energy-saving modes. Apple has also done some work between generations of the Apple Watch. Siri’s common commands are available offline on the Series 9—something Google is still working on with Wear OS.

    It took two generations, but Google finally delivered on its smartwatch promises with the Pixel Watch 2. The watch is comfortable for most wrists and pairs well with any of the dozens of available Android devices. Google also offers several different watchbands and finishes. The only downside is that the watchband employs proprietary connection mechanisms. Finding quality third-party watchbands is not as easy, and some of the Google Store’s offerings are pretty pricey.

    The Fitbit app is what makes the Pixel Watch 2 a worthy wear. Its robust offerings include a daily readiness score, overnight body temperature tracking, sleep coaching, and stress monitoring. (Some features require a Fitbit Premium subscription, though they can be bundled in with Google One if you’re an all-in Android user.) The only drawback is that even with Health Connect, Fitbit doesn’t sync up with many popular third-party wellness suites without the help of a few other additional apps. I’m still trying to figure out how to count my Peloton workouts toward my weekly stats on Fitbit without manually entering the data.

    Battery life is pretty average among most smartwatches available right now. Most of today’s Android-compatible smartwatches last as long as the Apple Watch—about a day and a half with the always-on display off. You can set the watch to a power-saving mode to eke out more time with it. But generally, smartwatches the size of the Pixel Watch 2 won’t make it two full days off the charger.

    I used a Galaxy Watch 4 with a Pixel smartphone and the OnePlus 8, which was fine. However, the latest Galaxy Watch 6 has exclusive capabilities available only to Samsung smartphone users, including blood pressure and ECG monitoring, facilitated by apps available only through the Galaxy app store.

    Like the Pixel Watch 2, the Galaxy Watch 6 can detect irregular heartbeats, track your sleep, measure your skin temperature as you sleep, and track your sleep patterns. It offers a larger display than the Pixel Watch 2—1.3 inches on the Galaxy Watch 6 versus 1.2 inches on the Pixel Watch 2—with less bezel. The Galaxy Watch 6 also uses a universal clasping mechanism so that you can buy watchbands anywhere.

    My favorite part of Samsung Health is the new medication reminder offering, which simultaneously blasts the phone and smartwatch to hold me accountable for my pill. It’s louder than Apple Health and the Apple Watch’s quieter medication notifications. It functions like an alarm, and if you don’t take a second to mark whether you’ve taken your medication, it will nag you until you dismiss it entirely.

    Best battery life

    OnePlus Watch 2, $300

    The OnePlus Watch 2 is a decidedly better smartwatch than the first-generation OnePlus Watch. But it is a big watch, and it is only available in one size. If it looks too big for you from the picture featured here, that’s because it is. However, if you think this honker of a wearable is something you’d sport after all, let me tell you the best part of the OnePlus Watch 2: it has the best battery life I’ve seen in a Wear OS watch in a long time.

    With the always-on display off, the OnePlus Watch 2 lasts up to 100 hours off the charger. OnePlus employs two processors: one to handle the smartwatch’s lighter loads, like step counting and touch input, and one to take on the heavier loads, like apps and workout tracking. OnePlus’s health suite isn’t as robust as a Pixel Watch 2 with Fitbit or the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 with Samsung Health. But at least it syncs up with Health Connect.

    Für die Leistung sorgt der Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Octa-Core, mit einer Taktrate von 3,18 Ghz + 2,8 Ghz + 2,0 GHz, dafür gibt es für das System 12 GB LPDDR5X-RAM und für den Benutzer 512 GB ROM. Hier kommt schneller UFS 4.0 Speicher zum Einsatz. Dieser kann bei Bedarf aber auch mittels einer microSDXC-Karte um bis zu 1 TB erweitert werden.

    Leitz Phone 3 Kamera

    Interessant ist natürlich vor allem die Kamera. Hier kommt bei der Hauptkamera ein 1-Zoll-CMOS-Bildsensor mit 47,2 Megapixel zum Einsatz. Die Brennweite beträgt 19mm (Kleinbildformat) und die Blende f/1.9. Neu ist eine „variable Blende“ für den Leitz Looks Kameramodus. Dabei werden mehrere Blendenstufen der bekanntesten Leica Objektive Noctilux-M 1:1,2/50 mm sowie Summilux-M 1:1,4/28 mm und Summilux-M 1:1,4/35 mm simuliert. Mit diesem exklusiven Software-Feature kann man den Bokeh-Effekt der Fotos regulieren, indem aus verschiedenen Blendenstufen von F1,2 bzw. 1,4 bis F8 gewählt wird.

    Leitz Phone 3Mit der „Leica Perspective Control“ hat eine Softwarefunktion, die bisher nur in Leica Kameras zum Einsatz kam, erstmalig Einzug in die Smartphone-Fotografie gehalten.     Google is making it easier for people to find their misplaced devices, including Android phones. 

    The Alphabet-owned search giant on Monday released a new version of its “Find My Device” feature that integrates a new, crowdsourced network of over 1 billion Android devices, according to Google. It’s Google’s equivalent of Apple’s popular “Find My” feature that lets users locate registered devices including laptops, phones and earbuds. 

    The new service will hit phones in the U.S. and Canada first and eventually be available worldwide. 

    For Android users, this means owners will be able to locate their devices even when they are offline. “Find My Device” can now ring a device or show its location on a map — previously, it had to be connected to the internet, Google said in a blog post. 

    Pixel 8 and 8 Pro mobile phone users will be able to find their devices even if they are turned off or their battery is dead. And starting in May, everyday items like keys and wallets made findable by location tracker tags from Chipolo and Pebblebee will join the network. The new Find My Device works with devices running Android 9+.

    OnePlus is the latest company to hop on the AI train. The phone manufacturer is rolling out a new photo editing tool called AI Eraser, which lets users remove extraneous objects from their photos. The new feature will be available on a range of OnePlus smartphones, including the OnePlus 12 and 12R, OnePlus 11 and OnePlus Open.

    To use the OnePlus AI Eraser, a person first has to highlight the parts of the image that need removing. These could be random people or a dirty trash can, but they can also be “imperfections” in the photo. Then, AI analyzes that area and creates a background that OnePlus claims will blend into the existing image. If it sounds familiar, it works basically the same as Adobe’s Generative Fill and Google’s Magic Eraser tools.

    However, this is a new venture for OnePlus, which uses its proprietary LLM to power the AI Eraser. “As OnePlus’ first feature based on generative AI technology, AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate user creativity through AI and revolutionize the future of photo editing, empowering users to create remarkable photos with just a few touches,” Kinder Liu, president and COO of OnePlus, said in a statement. “This year, we plan to introduce more AI features, and we look forward to their upcoming availability.”

    When you’re buying a new smartphone, salesmen love pestering you to buy some increased protection — insurance, a case, and, obviously, a screen protector. The screen protector has long been hailed as a necessity, costing anywhere from $10 to $60. These little slips of plastic and glass have ballooned to a $50 billion industry, but there’s a dirty secret underneath it all. Your screen protector may not be essential anymore.

    Is USB-C Finally Coming To iPhone?

    You wouldn’t be crazy for wanting to protect your screen. Cracking your screen is the number one way to break your phone, followed by water damage and battery issues. However, the glass in your phone has gotten significantly stronger in the last five years. Some experts say you might be able to skip the screen protector, and even warn about some relatively unknown downsides that salespeople aren’t telling you.

    “It’s really not particularly useful,” said Raymond Soneira, CEO of DisplayMate Technologies, about screen protectors in an interview with Gizmodo. Soneira’s company researches how to optimize your phone’s display. He doesn’t use a screen protector, just a phone case, but caveats this by noting he is very careful with his phone and rarely ever drops it.

    DisplayMate found that screen protectors make your phone more reflective. This reduces the quality of your display and requires you to increase your phone’s brightness to match the same quality. Over time, he says this will wear down your phone’s battery, and give you a shorter daily battery life.

    However, the phone community is mixed on this screen protector issue. iFixit Repairability Engineer, Carsten Fraunheim notes that screen protectors can be useful against scratches, micro-abrasions, and just give you peace of mind. He calls them a “no-brainer” but admits they’re less essential than they used to be.

    “As smartphone glass tech becomes more and more shatter resistant, screen protectors will lose their ‘drop protection’ selling feature,” Fraunheim said in an email.

    Even the liquid screen protectors have their issues.

    “Liquid wipe-on screen protectors are snake oil,” said iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens in an email. He says that this variety of protection actually compromises the structure of your screen, though he had no comment on panel-style protectors.

    Trey Barnett, a computer technician at a Manhattan uBreakiFix, has seen a lot of cracked screens in the 14 years he’s been repairing phones. However, he sees fewer iPhones with broken screens than he used to.

    “I would say that screens have gotten a bit stronger, but, you know, it hasn’t stopped people from breaking them altogether.”

    There is an obvious argument in favor of screen protectors: they cost less than replacing your phone screen. While that’s true, the chances of having to repair your screen are far lower than they used to be. The multi-billion dollar screen protector industry would like to keep that on the down low.

    Origins of The Screen Protector

    In 2021, Apple’s iPhones started using Ceramic Shield, a new material that claims to be tougher than any previous smartphone glass. It comes from Corning, a glass company that Steve Jobs commissioned to produce the first screen for the iPhone in 2007.

    Jobs famously gave Corning a 6-month deadline to produce the iPhone’s screen, which was originally planned to be plastic. Corning got it done, creating an especially strong, thin material called Gorilla Glass. This material would be used in the first decade of iPhones and is still used in most Samsung phones.

    Gorilla Glass is stronger than most glass, but it wasn’t great at first. Screen protectors for phones almost immediately popped up, as consumers raced to wrap their phones in protective materials.

    Apple forums in 2008 were full of people discussing early screen protectors. The first iPhone adopters quickly scratched their Gorilla Glass displays. Some users found these early screen protectors were so bad they messed with the iPhone’s touch screen. Screen protectors have gotten much better, but so have screens themselves.

    Ceramic Shield was a major leap forward for screen technology. The materials used in Ceramic Shield are much different from typical smartphone glass. Corning describes it as somewhere in between ceramics and glass, and Apple says it’s four times stronger than Gorilla Glass when it comes to drops.

    However, these major improvements have flown under the radar. That may have something to do with the growth of the screen protector industry. By 2030, the industry is expected to grow to roughly $85 billion, according to Grand View Research.

    Why Screen Protectors Persist

    Anyone who has cracked their phone screen will tell you how painful that experience is. Even though phone screens have gotten much better, the replacement process is scarring enough to make anyone just buy the dang screen protector.

    It’s totally understandable why you might put your phone in a screen protector still. It is a large investment, but there’s more and more evidence that screens are getting better. A good phone case alone may be sufficient.

    So at what point do we ditch the screen protectors? These flimsy films could be degrading the quality of that very expensive screen in your pocket, and they are potentially running through your battery. Screen protectors are slowly becoming a thing of the past.
