Here’s What Reportedly Happened During The Small Plane’s Evacuation From Hurricane Milton

According to The Independent, the crash occurred around 10:52 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8, near St. Petersburg’s Albert Whitted Airport. Four people were reportedly onboard a Piper Cherokee aircraft when the engine failed.

The craft reportedly landed in a body of water.

WFLA reports that footage was subsequently released of the passengers being evacuated from the craft while it was submerged in the the bay. The passengers were reportedly “holding on to the plane’s tail wing.” Furthermore, the outlet even noted that a dog was onboard.

“They just disappeared off the radar. We thought they went into the water, so we worked with the tower to basically suspend all aircraft operations at Albert Whitted,” a member of the United States Coast Guard told reporters. “The aircraft, which was floating, with four persons in the water and they were holding on to the tail wing of their aircraft.”

What Are The Conditions Of The Passengers After The Crash?

According to WFLA, three passengers were taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital. They reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, The Independent reports that Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in the Tampa area between Wednesday evening and the morning of Thursday, October 10. Furthermore, the hurricane is expected to bring “up to 15ft of storm surge and winds of up to 100mph.”

Hurricane Helene Recently Made Landfall In Florida

As the state of Florida braces itself for the impact of Hurricane Milton, we must note that the area was recently severely impacted by Hurricane Helene’s landfall. As The Shade Room previously reported, Helene recently struck the area and impacted surrounding states.

Hurricane Helene reportedly left behind damaged roadways and bridges and impacted the state’s electrical structures.

As of October 1, it was reported that over 130 people lost their lives from the storm across multiple states.

  • Small plane crashes in San Bernardino Mountains

Small plane crashes in San Bernardino Mountains

Authorities are investigating a plane crash that occurred in the San Bernardino Mountains on Saturday night, officials said.

The twin-engine Gulfstream AC95 crashed at about 8:15 p.m. in the mountains north of Palm Avenue, according to preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials did not know how many people were on board, or whether anyone survived.

The remote area is difficult to access by foot or vehicle, and search efforts were initially hampered by rain and wind that lashed the area Saturday night, officials said.

By Sunday morning, authorities had located a debris field north of Devil’s Canyon, and members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit were on the scene along with search and rescue crews, said Gloria Huerta, a spokesperson with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Rescue workers were being hoisted down a mountain and attempting to hike to the debris field, she said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.

  • 16 SWAT team members injured in explosion at FBI training facility in Irvine

16 SWAT team members injured in explosion at FBI training facility in Irvine

Sixteen members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team were injured Wednesday afternoon in an explosion at an FBI training facility in Irvine, according to authorities.

The explosion occurred around 1 p.m. in a small building at the Jerry Crowe Regional Tactical Training Facility, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Gonzalez.

The SWAT team was conducting its annual joint training with a bomb squad at the time, he said. The FBI wasn’t involved and had lent them the facility for the exercise.

Fifteen people were taken to hospitals. One person sustained a leg injury that will require surgery but is not life-threatening. Two others have superficial wounds, including back and leg injuries. The 13 other people went to the hospital as a precaution because of dizziness and ringing in their ears, but many have already been discharged.

The FBI training facility is on the grounds of the former El Toro Marine base.

Gonzalez didn’t have more information about what could have caused the explosion.

“That’s gonna be part of the investigation,” he said. “Trying to figure out exactly why that happened.”

The Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are investigating the incident.

  • Woman's body discovered after small plane crash in Half Moon Bay

Woman's body discovered after small plane crash in Half Moon Bay

Authorities on Monday suspended their search for possible survivors after a Cozy Mark IV plane crashed into the water near Half Moon Bay Sunday night, shortly after taking off from Half Moon Bay Airport.

Wreckage from the aircraft was found upside down in the water, and a woman’s body was discovered nearby. Authorities are still trying to determine what happened.

The body was spotted by a commercial fishing boat close to the site of the crash Monday morning and taken to the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office. The woman had not been identified as of Monday evening, but she is believed to be associated with the crash, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board said its preliminary investigation indicates there were two people on board the plane.

Shortly after noon on Monday, Sgt. Philip Hallworth, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said urgent rescue efforts had been called off because the prospect of survivors was unlikely. The plane went down near Moss Beach, about two miles north of the Half Moon Bay Airport. A large piece of the plane washed up on the beach at Ross Cove.

Along with the sheriff’s office, the Coastside Fire Protection District, California Highway Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard are involved in the investigation.

Witness reports described a plane flying erratically before falling from sight, according to the sheriff’s office.

“We were having dinner out on the patio and we heard this motor engine puttering — like you hear in the movies, when a plane is about to crash,” Melissa Richter, who was visiting the area from Maine, told ABC 7 News. “It was definitely pivoting back and forth, and then it looked like it put on the gas, went a little bit faster, then it went down and the engine cut out.”
