Keith Earls admits it will be a mixture of relief and pride to reach 100 Ireland caps after fearing injury issues may cause him to fall short of the milestone.
Munster wing Earls is poised to become only the ninth Irishman to achieve a century of Test outings ahead of Saturday’s World Cup warm-up match with England in Dublin.
The 35-year-old went more than a year without an international appearance amid fitness problems before being recalled by head coach Andy Farrell for the 33-17 win over Italy on August 5.
“I’m trying not to think about it but talking to Andy about if it does happen, he’s telling me: ‘it’s not just another cap, you can’t have a normal week because it’s not a normal week’,” said Earls.
“It would be a massive honour but also just a bit of relief because I was stuck on 98.
“I suppose in the last couple of years I was genuinely thinking every time I stepped on to the field it could be the last time.
“I’d be extremely proud and privileged to join a unique group.”
Earls made his international return against Italy earlier this month
Earls is set to move alongside Ireland greats Brian O’Driscoll, Ronan O’Gara, Rory Best, Paul O’Connell and John Hayes in reaching three figures, in addition to current team-mates Cian Healy, Johnny Sexton and Conor Murray.
He featured in two of his country’s three Tests during last summer’s victorious tour of New Zealand but was then sidelined for autumn victories over South Africa, Fiji and Australia and this year’s Six Nations Grand Slam success.
Earls believes he has enjoyed the best pre-season of his career as he attempts to secure a spot at his fourth World Cup.

Asked if there were times during the past 12 months when he thought his Ireland days may be over, he replied: “Yeah, especially with the talent coming through and the way some of the lads are playing and my injury history last year.
“But I just kept the head down and I’m grateful. I’ve a great relationship with Andy and great trust with Andy and we’ll always be honest with each other.
“I genuinely have probably had my best pre-season this year as a professional rugby player.
“We’ve got everything spot on between all the training, physios, coaches, so it’s been really enjoyable.
“I suppose there’s that bit of pressure as well because you want to repay them [the coaches] as well but Andy’s just big on allowing us to be ourselves and not blowing things up too much or trying anything special.
“It’s just be yourself and if you’re special, you’re special, but it gives you great confidence, especially as an old winger.”

Former Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook has signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets
Two big-name NFL running backs have new homes, with former Minnesota Vikings star Dalvin Cook signing with the New York Jets and ex-Dallas Cowboy Ezekiel Elliott joining the New England Patriots.
The Jets and Cook have agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth up to $8.6m, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Monday. Cook confirmed the deal by reposting social media posts about the news.
After being released by the Vikings on June 9 following his fourth straight 1,000-yard season, the four-time Pro Bowler will team up with an ex-NFC North rival, Aaron Rodgers, in New York. The Jets’ backfield is currently led by Breece Hall, who averaged 5.8 yards per attempt across seven games as a rookie last season before tearing his ACL.
Cook was slated to earn $11m in 2023 with Minnesota, where he rushed for 5,024 yards and 43 touchdowns the past four seasons.
The 28-year-old is coming into this season off the back of surgery in February, the latest in a series of major shoulder issues that include a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum.

Elliott’s one-year deal with the Patriots is worth up to $6 million, according to sources. He confirmed earlier reports of the agreement when he announced on social media that he will wear No 15 for the Patriots, which had been his number in college at Ohio State.
The 28-year-old was released by the Cowboys in a salary-cutting move in March. He will provide important depth in New England behind starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson.
Elliott, who led the NFL in rushing in 2016 and 2018 and posted four 1,000-yard seasons in Dallas, was slowed in the second half of last season because of a knee injury and posted a career-low 876 yards at 3.9 yards per carry.
He ranks third in Cowboys history in rushing yards (8,262) and rushing touchdowns (68) behind Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett.

The PGA Tour has released a new “reimagined” schedule for the 2024 season, which features more no-cut events than ever before and an increased $25m prize for the winner of the FedExCup.
Returning to a calendar-year schedule for the first time since 2012, the PGA Tour has described the events as being “interconnected like never before to deliver maximum drama and consequence”.
The FedExCup Regular Season will consist of 36 events.
The 2024 season begins in early January with the ‘Opening Drive’ double-header at The Sentry and Sony Open in Hawaii, and runs through to the Wyndham Championship in early August.
These tournaments include the four majors, The Players Championship and eight ‘signature events’.
At the end of the regular season, the top 70 players will advance to the FedExCup Playoffs.
“We are excited about the roll-out of the PGA Tour’s reimagined schedule and what the season will offer to our fans: a January start with stars competing head-to-head more often, alongside the weekly drama of life-altering moments and the emergence of new stars,” said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.
“While winning on the PGA Tour continues to be the ultimate – and most difficult – challenge, we have further connected every tournament, with more at stake each week.
“From The Sentry through the FedExCup Playoffs and into the soon-to-be-announced FedExCup Fall, this new, cadence will create consistent excitement for our fans and reward players like never before.

“We are grateful to the membership – especially the Player Directors and Player Advisory Council – as well as our tournaments and partners for the collaboration that has set us up for an exciting 2024.”
The release of the 2024 calendar comes two months after the the PGA Tour and DP World Tour announced a shock proposed agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which funds LIV Golf, to form a new joint commercial entity in order to “unify the game”.
The ‘signature events’ explained
Previously referred to as ‘designated events’ in 2023, the newly-renamed signature events underline the continued evolution of the PGA Tour’s season format.
The eight events are limited-field tournaments with increased prize money and FedExCup points.
Five of these will not feature a cut, but the three player-hosted invitationals – The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament – will still feature a 36-hole cut to the top 50 and ties and any player within 10 shots of the lead.
The eight ‘signature events’ are as follows:
- The Sentry (January 1-7)
- AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (January 29-February 4)
- The Genesis Invitational (February 12-18)
- Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (March 4-10)
- RBC Heritage (April 15-21)
- Wells Fargo Championship (May 6-12)

- Travelers Championship (June 17-23)
Explaining the qualification process for these events, the PGA Tour said in a statement: “The 2024 schedule cadence connects events through several new eligibility paths, allowing trending players to earn Signature Event starts and ensuring every member the opportunity to compete alongside the game’s best.
“The Sentry is the season’s first Signature Event and includes PGA TOUR winners from the previous calendar year as well as the top 50 members from the 2022-23 FedExCup standings (i.e. those who qualify for the BMW Championship, the second FedExCup Playoffs event).

“Eligibility for the remaining seven Signature Events (field sizes anticipated to be between 70-80 players) includes the top 50 members from the 2022-23 FedExCup standings and 15 members who can play their way in through The Next 10 and The Swing 5.”
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is a new addition to that list for 2024 and will feature a revised format. Amateurs will now compete alongside professionals (80 players) over the first two rounds, with the competition limited to professionals only for the final two rounds.

Katie Archibald and Great Britain celebrated an emotional victory in the women’s team pursuit at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow.
Archibald, Elinor Barker, Josie Knight and Anna Morris won gold with a time of four minutes 8.771 seconds, more than four seconds ahead of New Zealand, as they scooped Britain’s first world title in this event since 2014.
Archibald’s fifth world title was hugely poignant with the 29-year-old’s late partner and fellow cyclist Rab Wardell dying of a cardiac arrest as he lay in bed last August.
The rider was given a tremendous reception from the crowd and told BBC Sport: “It is all coming out now with this event.
“Someone was talking about imposter syndrome the other day and you almost have it the other way round.
“We almost see ourselves as the best in the world but we have not been on the top step since 2014. So to have that feeling validated feels good.”

Knight, who shares a house with Archibald, said of her team-mate: “I see her ups and downs every day. She’s had a really tough couple of weeks. I know her prep hasn’t been quite what she would have wanted.
“Usually she’s the real hero of this team. We’ve had to adapt and I’ve tried to step up, take that role on. But she is phenomenal. We all stepped up. And we’re world champions.”
Barker added: “Katie’s unbelievable. It’s really hard to summarise the year that she has had, how she feels about it, how we feel about it.
“Just the fact that she is here, it’s insane. I don’t really know how she does it, to be honest.”
Archibald and Barker were both part of the team when Britain last won the women’s team pursuit world title nine years ago, going on to enjoy Olympic glory in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 before taking silver in Tokyo at the following Games.
There were also more gold medals for Britain’s para-cyclists.
Sam Ruddock successfully defended his men’s C1 kilo title before Blaine Hunt took the C5 crown, with Jaco van Gass then beating team-mate Fin Graham to win the men’s C3 scratch race and his second rainbow jersey in as many days.

Gareth Davies goes over for Wales’ first try against England
Second-half tries from Gareth Davies and George North saw Wales kick off their Rugby World Cup preparations with a 20-9 victory over an out-of-sorts England at the Principality Stadium.
It was a battle of the kickers in the first 40 minutes, with three successful penalties from the boot of Marcus Smith compared to two from Wales’ Test centurion Leigh Halfpenny, giving the visitors a 9-6 lead at half-time.
But the hosts seized the initiative eight minutes into the second half when Gareth Davies was on hand to finish for a try and they surged further in front thanks to George North going over from close range just before the hour mark, with Halfpenny converting both.

England: Goals – Smith (3).
Louis Rees-Zammit was unfortunate not to add a third try for the hosts before full-time when he was adjudged to have knocked on after a TMO review, but that did not take the shine off the result or the performance from Warren Gatland’s new-look team.

Matt Peet praised ‘flawless’ Abbas Miski after the Lebanese winger scored four tries in Wigan Warriors’ 64-6 thrashing of a much-rotated Hull Kingston Rovers side at the DW Stadium.
Peet’s men were in no mood to go easy on a Rovers matchday squad featuring three academy debutants and a trio of short-term signings with more than one eye on next week’s Betfred Challenge Cup final against Leigh Leopards.
Miski’s quadruple followed hot on the heels of a hat-trick against Leigh Leopards last week and continued the remarkable transformation of a player who spent part of his early Wigan career on loan at Betfred Championship side Newcastle Thunder.
“There isn’t a major flaw in his game, he’s worked so hard, he lets his rugby do the talking and he is just a great advert for perseverance and hard work,” Peet said.
“He showed the right attitude when he went to Newcastle, and he is benefiting from that. From a coach’s point of view, he is technically where you want him to be, and he is such a well-rounded player for us.”
Jai Field helped himself to a late hat-trick as Wigan ran in a total of 12 tries to make up for their agonising cup semi-final loss to the same team – albeit with different personnel – at Headingley less than two weeks ago.
“We did a professional job,” Peet said. “It was a different sort of challenge for us, and it was quite difficult to prepare the group.

“I want to pay tribute to Hull KR who brought a young and spirited team and while they lacked some cohesion and experience, I thought their performance was honourable and we had to earn our points.”
Robins boss Willie Peters had no complaints about the result or performance and paid tribute to the way a side featuring just two starters from that Headingley golden-point win kept the hosts at bay for much of the first period.
“The score didn’t reflect the effort and how hard the guys competed,” Peters said.
“It came down to a bit of technical stuff but with Wigan being the quality side that they are, there was a high level of skill there and some really quality tries and it is all about learning for the young guys.”

Peters’ attention will now turn to Wembley and fashioning only Rovers’ second Challenge Cup win in their history after their Hull derby triumph in 1980.
And Peters paid tribute to the big names he rested, who made the long journey to the DW Stadium en masse to support their new-look side from the sidelines.
“They came into the dressing room before the game and that highlights the connection we’ve got within the group,” Peters said.
“They met for dinner beforehand and turned up together, and that’s really pleasing to see as a coach. We’re heading into a massive game next week and it’s the teams who are most connected that win the big games.”

Lando Norris has admitted leaving McLaren has been “in the back” of his mind but says a recent upturn in form has left him “confident” of winning Formula 1 world championships with the team.
In February 2022 Norris signed a long-term contract extension to remain with McLaren until the end of 2025, but the team’s failure to provide him with a competitive car following the agreement of the deal has led to much speculation over the 23-year-old’s future.
However, after Norris was able finish above ninth just once in the opening eight races of the 2023 season, major mid-season upgrades to the MCL60 have had a remarkable impact, enabling the British driver to take back-to-back second places in July.
Asked whether he agrees with McLaren chief executive Zak Brown’s belief that the MCL60’s newfound speed would convince Norris to “stick around”, he told Sky Sports F1: “Of course. I want to win races with McLaren. I want to win in papaya, I want to win championships.
“I want to achieve my success and I want to achieve my goals with McLaren. That’s been my target since I’ve come here, since I’ve entered Formula 1 with this team.

“I guess I’m a loyal guy from that point of view, that I’ve joined the team, they gave me a chance in Formula 1 and I want to deliver and achieve success for them.
“And I think it’s a cooler story at the same time, to go from where we were a few years ago, a team that was really struggling, to fighting back and being that first team to really come back from a long way and fight for championships and wins. I think it would be just a cool story to look back on in 10, 20 years.”
Before McLaren’s recent surge into podium contention, Norris had been talked about as a potential future team-mate at Red Bull for Max Verstappen, who has won eight successive races to leave himself all but assured of a third successive drivers’ title.

Norris added: “But in the back of my mind, there’s that impatient game of, ‘do I stick it out for another few years, or is it time to look at something different?’
“But the more we achieve things like we have done over the past few weeks, the more I’m very confident with the decision I made to stay until 2025, and the more confident I am that we can achieve our goals together in the future.”
Norris expects McLaren to remain in podium contention
While Red Bull have delivered a historic run to win all 12 Grands Prix, along with three Sprints, going into the summer break, McLaren are now part of a fierce battle taking place behind Verstappen.
Mercedes, Aston Martin and Ferrari have each at times appeared to be Red Bull’s nearest challenger, but the hierarchy has fluctuated with the arrival of upgrades and depending on the suitably of tracks to each team’s car.

Asked whether McLaren’s July performances had confirmed they will be in podium contention for the remainder of the season, Norris said: “I want to give a straight answer, yes. There’s definitely going to be some races that we’re going to struggle a lot more.
“The same with every team, every year – sometimes they’ll be like, ‘yeah, I’m definitely confident we can do it,’ and there’s going to be some where you’re like, ‘this just doesn’t quite suit us enough to confidently be there.’
“And we have two cars, two Red Bulls that basically should be one-two every single race this year. So it’s like kind of fighting for third place and if things happen with one of those two drivers, then maybe you’re fighting for second or first.
“But really, there’s only one spot that you’re kind of actually looking at, and you have two Mercedes who have been very consistent all season, and then you can never count out Ferrari and Aston, especially this year.”
‘Fans should be happy with McLaren progress’
Norris’ warning that there would be difficult races was proven to be wise, as the team endured a relatively disappointing weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix as he only managed seventh, and team-mate Oscar Piastri retired after a first-lap collision.
However Norris is adamant that he is, and the team’s fanbase, should be very happy with the progress that has been made,

“I think they [McLaren fans] should still be very happy that we’re not fighting for 18th and 19th,” he said.
“I’m very happy, even if we were behind Mercedes now, I’m still very, very happy with the progress we ‘ve made.
“From where we were, I would say it’s one of the biggest turnarounds in the middle of a season for many, many years in Formula 1, and that’s a very good thing to have done.”
