    Once you decide you love something, it’s psychologically proven that you’ll see it everywhere. It’s called the frequency illusion (kind of), and yes, it’s real. Since I, like so many of my fellow editors, am fully smitten with point-toe, knee-high boots, I’m not surprised that the exact style has become practically unavoidable in my everyday life, whether I’m working on a story or walking around the city. But even with all that exposure, I’m convinced the most recent time I spotted a pair was my chicest sighting yet. 

    For an especially autumnal day in NYC, Emily Ratajkowski debuted the perfect fall outfit, which included a brown moto jacket worn over a black bodysuit and combined with a khaki-colored $40 Zara micro skort and knife-sharp knee-high boots. To accent the outfit, she added a vintage Dior Saddle Bag, Fendi sunglasses, and a wide belt.

    Given how popular trends like naked dresses, visible thongs, and going, well, pantsless are these days, it’s growing more and more difficult to generate controversy when it comes to fashion. And yet, Rihanna just did exactly that by wearing the one trend I personally never thought would make a genuine comeback: High-low hemlines. Leave it to the Fenty founder, though, to make the throwback silhouette feel modern, and even more shocking, cool. 

    Out to celebrate A$AP Rocky’s whisky brand Mercer & Prince at The Fleur Room in Los Angeles, Rihanna paired a gloved, velvet bodysuit by Melitta Baumeister with a faux leather Rick Owens skirt fit with a high-low hemline and a train. With the daring duo, she added a Tom Ford for Gucci handbag, a Celine hoodie, and strappy heels that laced halfway up her legs. A far cry from the jewel-toned high-low dresses we wore to practically every high school dance in the early-2010s (or was that just me?), the look is singlehandedly paving the way for a comeback of the cut. 

    Even so, welcoming high-low hemlines back into our wardrobes after all this time won’t be easy. To ease back into the style, shop the more approachable asymmetric skirts below.

    While full skirts have been a staple since the 19th century, we’ve typically seen this style at its peak popularity during times of austerity (i.e., the civil war, the great depression, and the ’50s). And with the world being in such a state of fluxation, it only makes sense that we’d see designers drawn to more voluminous silhouettes. But unlike past iterations, these skirts have a more modern take that can be attributed to tailoring and color blocking rather than draping. 

    At Bottega Veneta, leather fringe was used as an underskirt to create a full silhouette, while pleats were used at Prada to the same avail. In contrast, Proenza Schouler used color blocking and bias-cutting to create the illusion of volume. And then (my personal favorite) was how Tory Burch paired full lurex shirts with contrasting fitted wrap tops to create a crisp, accentuated silhouette. Each iteration of this skirt proves that while this trend may be “old,” it can never be dull (if done right).

    If we’d told you a couple of years ago that knee-length skirts were going to be cool again soon, you might’ve questioned our authority.
