    I stalk Zara’s new arrivals like most reload their for-you pages—multiple times a day, every day of the week. I do this because when an item drops that warrants my attention, if I don’t find it immediately after it becomes available, it’ll sell out. That’s life in the TikTok era for you. Naturally, then, when I discovered that the brand had dropped an under-$120 full skirt much like the ones that dominated the fall/winter 2023 runways in February, I wasn’t about to hesitate to snag one for myself—and share the news quickly thereafter. 

    Full, voluminous skirts were most prominently spotted at Prada, where gorgeous white satin numbers were paired with neutral knits and suede outerwear and finished off with decorative kitten heels. But Prada was far from the only brand that got in on the trend. Bottega Veneta, Proenza Schouler, Emilia Wickstead, and more labels that showed across fashion month added fuel to the full-skirt fire, switching from leather to wool plaid to denim and back again. Zara’s take is a sand-colored, almost low-rise style with large pleats and belt holes for accessorizing. It also has a matching bomber jacket that simply must be considered as well.     For the past several seasons, miniskirts have ruled the skirt kingdom. And then last fall, maxi skirts started to fight for attention and a place in our closets. Now, there’s a new skirt trend vying for our love, but like most skirt trends, it isn’t new at all.

    The trend is full midi skirts, and I’m actually a bit surprised by it. It’s pretty much the opposite of Y2K inspired, unlike seemingly every trend these days, so it’s quite refreshing. It’s also very appropriate for Kate Middleton’s classic wardrobe (which is unlikely to contain any low-rise miniskirts). Earlier this week, Middleton opted to wear a full midi skirt from Zara, which is now sold out, unfortunately. She paired the tweed black-and-white skirt with a cream turtleneck and coat and black knee boots. It’s the perfect way to style a swingy skirt during late winter, and once the weather warms up, you can take the same skirt. Just swap the turtleneck for a tank top and the boots for sandals.

    Dressing for the cold means breaking out a lot of fun fashion things: fur-lined boots, heavy-duty coats, and obnoxiously oversized scarves, (the list goes on…). But until very recently skirts were notably missing from my winter wardrobe. Yes, stockings and tights do exist, but sometimes dealing with runs and nicks leads to more hassle than relief. And honestly, neither comes close to matching the insulating capacity of actually wearing pants. Thank goodness the widespread revival of maxi skirts has led me to better options. 

    Thinking back, I’ve never really given them the credit they deserved—midi skirts have dominated my closet since 2013. Now that I’m firmly on board the floor-length skirt train (Saint Laurent is largely to blame), my winter outfit rotation has changed dramatically. My November to March outfits aren’t only relegated to pants and their many forms. Style a long skirt with tights and knee boots and you have triple the protection against the chill. The annoyance of cold legs during a walk around the city is not longer a factor.

    Trust me. No one was as aghast as I was when I saw that bubble hems had hit the runway. I was looking through images of Prabal Gurung’s S/S 22 show when I spotted them, and all the disastrous outfits I wore back when I was, like, 12 years old came rushing back into my brain. Fast-forward some months, and there they were again—this time at Jason Wu’s F/W 22 show, and then at Khaite, Prada, Proenza Schouler, Ulla Johnson, JW Anderson, Valentino, Molly Goddard, and Dauphinette for S/S 23. The more I realized I could not avoid this divisive trend returning from my childhood, the more I warmed up to the idea of wearing a bubble hem again.

    The last time I wore the silhouette was probably middle school, but the current iterations are much more sophisticated than, say, the Limited Too and Delia’s designs of yore. Sure, there’s still an inherently youthful energy to them with all that flounce, but some styles are less exaggerated than others. Plus, it turns an otherwise simple skirt, dress, or even T-shirt into something a little more interesting with the fabric delicately pooled at the bottom.
