    “The best time to moisturize your skin is after you get out of the shower or right after you wash your face,” says Imahiyerobo-Ip. “Gently pat your skin and apply moisturizer to slightly damp skin. This will seal in the moisture from your shower.”

    It’s recommended to do this twice a day (in the morning and at night), but Van Dyke says it might also be beneficial to moisturize midday, especially if the environment around you is dry. “Try misting the face and then applying moisturizer. In a pinch, just mist on top of the moisturizer, allowing the water to be drawn in,” she says.

    Make sure you are applying your product actively, not passively, Kim advises. “Why not simultaneously stimulate collagen production and increase circulation?” she says. “When applying products, I always recommend to mindfully pat or slap in an upward motion, and do so for as long as you want (I actually hit quite hard that my skin turns pink!) when applying the products.”

    When it comes to your baths and showers, you want to hit the sweet spot in terms of water temperature and duration, as more than that could dry out your skin. Gmyrek recommends taking short baths or showers of 15 to 20 minutes and using lukewarm, not hot, water. Use non-soap cleansers that are fragrance-free, as soaps can strip essential oils from the skin.

    I Tried “the Best Facial in NYC”—It’s $1000 and So Luxe

    I love getting facials. In my opinion, there’s really no better self-care option out there. Facials not only give me a built-in amount of time to not stare at a screen and try to relax, but they also give tons of skin benefits that make the treatment truly worthwhile. My facials typically fall on the more affordable end of the spectrum (I have bills to pay!), but when I got an invite to try “the best facial in NYC,” which comes with a whopping $1000 price tag, I was immediately intrigued. 

    This facial is from none other than JTAV Clinical Skincare, a luxury skincare clinic in Manhattan. Founded by Joie Tavernise, an NYC-based skin expert and medical aesthetician, JTAV’s signature facials are completely tailored to each person’s individual needs. Unlike many facials, JTAV facials combine clinical devices with tried-and-true facial techniques, rendering them a unique experience. 

    That being said, there are a few things you can typically expect from a JTAV facial. Usually, Tavernise will deeply cleanse, exfoliate skin with a Hydrafacial, dermaplane, extract clogged pores, and use LED light. Depending on your needs, Tavernise will also use Laser Genesis therapy for tone and texture, Clear + Brilliant for more extreme tone and pore-size issues, or intense pulsed light for hyperpigmentation. 

    The experience itself felt like a mix between a relaxing facial and a dermatologist appointment. Tavernise seemed to know more about my skin than I do (and even spotted some places I may have picked at too much). Each step felt methodical and results-driven, and I felt like I could ask questions as she went along to get a better understanding of the process. 

    My skin is typically pretty clear and leans dry, but lately, I’ve been experiencing a lot more breakouts than usual thanks to stress and hormones. I let Tavernise know this, and she made sure to customize my facial accordingly, targeting problem areas while still ensuring my skin remained hydrated. 

    Honestly, the best part of the facial is that (aside from the clinical devices) Tavernise used a lot of skincare products that you can buy and use at home—which is great for those of us who can’t spring for a facial the price of our rent. I asked Tavernise to walk me through our entire facial, including all the products she used.     Gwyneth Paltrow Offers Sound Advice to Brad Pitt About His New Skin Care Line

    Gwyneth Paltrow stepped out on Tuesday evening to attend the opening-night celebration of Veuve Clicquot’s “Solaire Culture” exhibition, a traveling showcase that made its way to Los Angeles to commemorate the Champagne house’s milestone 250th anniversary and pay tribute to Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, who took control of Veuve Clicquot Champagne at age 27 in 1805 after the death of her husband. She became one of the very first female business leaders during a time when women were not allowed to manage a company or open a bank account.

    “Her story is really inspiring. She’s an example of what can happen when entrepreneurs, especially female entrepreneurs, don’t take no for an answer,” said Paltrow, who attended the opening on Rodeo Drive alongside guests including Gal Gadot, Laura Harrier, and Charlie’s Angels actor Ella Balinska, who DJ’d the party. “I think we can all learn from her story.”

    To honor Madame Clicquot’s pioneering achievements⁠—she created the first known blended rosé Champagne⁠—art historian Camille Morineau and designer Constance Guisset gathered 10 female artists to commission original artwork for “Solaire Culture,” an immersive exhibition that salutes female audacity and invokes joy and optimism. Among the artists whose works are featured in the exhibit—opening October 26—are Yayoi Kusama, Rosie McGuinness, Sheila Hicks, and Tacita Dean, who all offered their unique vision of Madame Clicquot’s daring entrepreneurial ethos, which has paved the way for generations of female business leaders.

    Like Madame Clicquot, Paltrow has pivoted, transitioning from an Oscar-winning acting career to the lifestyle and wellness industry as the founder and CEO of Goop. More than a decade after Paltrow started her company in 2008, it’s grown from a weekly newsletter into a brand valued at an estimated $250 million.

    “What I love about being an entrepreneur is the agency that you have, and I also love working with a team,” said Paltrow on the arrivals carpet prior to viewing the exhibition. “Acting is very much a solo sport and to be able to really build something with a group of people that you care about and invest in, and all the different points of view, and all the different expertise, and galvanize everybody focused on the same thing makes it a very rewarding experience.”

    Launching Goop was no easy task, Paltrow candidly admits. “My set of challenges have been very unique because I migrated from a career in the arts to a career in business,” she said. “I had to gain trust and support. But at the end of the day, everything is business…It takes a lot of thought and a lot of concerted effort and really keeping an eye on the prize, and of course, there’s a terrible economy. There’s always something to navigate through.”

    From recommending vaginal steaming to sex toys and pubic hair oil, the curated products Goop features are meant not to titillate but to explore.

    “When we started Goop, we were doing it from a very real, very honest place, and we continue to really try to change conversations and to move culture forward,” said Paltrow, dressed in a cutout Carolina Herrera dress with a long train. “To be an indispensable resource is really what we hope the customer will take away. We started a lot of conversations about clean beauty and how important clean beauty is, we talked modern feminism and unconscious uncoupling, and amazing travel recommendations. Our goal is always to help the customer.”

    Following in Paltrow’s footsteps, a slew of celebrities have recently turned their professional attention to non-acting endeavors. From Scarlett Johansson and Jared Leto to her former fiancé Brad Pitt, these A-listers have entered the beauty world with their own brands. This past September, Pitt released his skin care line, Le Domaine, a gender-neutral, anti-aging line. Pitt has credited Paltrow⁠—the two were in a relationship from 1994 to 1997⁠—for helping inspire the idea. As he grows and further develops his brand, Paltrow has some practical business tips for the Oscar winner.

    “I think for any entrepreneur, and Brad included, you have to be committed to the integrity and the authenticity in what you make,” Paltrow said. “You have to know that you are making something because you believe in it so much. That you have to make it because you believe the world needs to have it as opposed to creating a business for business sake.”

    Pitt also praised Paltrow for getting him to wash his face. “It was a long time ago. I don’t remember if I was the one,” she said. “But you know, I’m always trying to encourage everybody to wash their face. A clean face is a good thing, even for Brad!”

    As Paltrow continues to dominate the wellness and lifestyle world, she promises she will not completely abandon her acting career. You can expect her to take on one more role.

    “I mean, I would never say never,” said Paltrow, who last appeared onscreen in the Netflix series The Politician in 2020. “I promised my mother [Blythe Danner] that in the future I’ll go back to do at least one movie or play.”

    I suffered from acne on and off for most of my adolescent life. It was painful not only physically but also emotionally. My peers regularly hurled names like “crater face” and “pizza face” at me. “Go wash your face” was another favorite phrase one of the boys in my class would shout. I was embarrassed. I felt ugly. I stopped looking in the mirror. My self esteem was in the toilet.

    “So many of us go through having acne, and the impact on your self confidence can be devastating,” says Neel Patel, founder of Après Pacific. “I started Après Pacific to provide access to Indian skincare secrets and Ayurvedic remedies so we all can feel confident in clear, comfortable skin.”

    According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. It usually starts during puberty, and it can occur at any life stage. It affects up to 50 million Americans annually. Acne can take a significant toll on our emotional health. Study after study shows the damage acne can have, including increased anxiety, and the feeling of being isolated and alone. And particularly for teenage girls, acne can cause severe stress, making them feel less attractive and causing low . For me, once the acne cleared, the dark spots left behind served as a constant reminder of the pain acne continued to cause.

    Patel picked the name Après Pacific as a nod to the Pacific regions of the world where Ayurvedic remedies have existed for more than 5,000 years. He wanted to develop a modern with a fun, fresh and calming vibe. “And most importantly, I wanted the brand to be inspired by and incorporate all of the Indian skincare remedies my mother made from scratch in our kitchen when I suffered from acne.”

    As Patel builds his skincare brand, here are three lessons he has learned along the way:

    Take the risk

    From as long as he can remember, Patel has always been willing to take the risk. When he was 9 years old, he and his mother left India to start a new life in Canada. Although he didn’t speak any English, he supported his mother in making the move for better opportunities. After settling down in their small Canadian town, his mom started her own Indian food catering service. “I knew my mother’s talents and what she was capable of,” he says “I pushed her to take the risk and start the service. It gave me first-hand insights into running a business.”

    After starting a career in investment banking, Patel risked it all and walked away. “People thought I was crazy walking away from this lucrative career,” Patel says. “But I wasn’t willing to put in 12-15 hour days for a big paycheck in exchange for my happiness. Doing research and moving company logos from one part of the deck to the other wasn’t how I wanted to live my life. I know many who have enjoyed being in the industry, and I wanted to build something of my own.”

    The idea of building Après Pacific came to him in September 2020. Inspired by his own battle with acne and what he saw adult friends experiencing with their skin, he started looking for manufacturers. He worked closely with a chemist to finalize the hero product and ultimately launched in April 2021. “Now some of my former colleagues who thought I was crazy for taking this risk see how the brand has quickly evolved and gained great traction,” Patel says. “They want to know how I did it.”

    Be open about your mistakes and adapt quickly

    Although Patel had a strong finance background, he had never started an e-commerce brand before. He did his best to talk to as many founders as possible to try to avoid their mistakes. “You can’t avoid mistakes, they will always happen,” says Patel. “The important thing is to be open about your mistakes, learn quickly and adapt.”

    Patel shares that one of his biggest mistakes was hiring an established, well-known marketing agency to help run paid ads for the brand. He discovered that the agency wasn’t devoting as much time as it should to his brand, because it didn’t earn as much commission from smaller brands that didn’t spend as much. “I learned that lesson the hard way after spending significant money with the agency and not seeing any results,” Patel says. “We finally parted ways with the agency and hired two media buyers who fully devoted their time to Après Pacific. As soon as we changed directions, we saw incredible results.”

    Remember that every dollar counts

    As a self-funded, bootstrapped founder, Patel is always focused on ensuring that every dollar counts. “We are figuring out unique ways to stand out and succeed in the marketplace, and at the same we have a limited budget,” he explains. “Every single dollar should have a return on investment. It can be scary and hurts when you make mistakes, and having limited funds keeps you on your toes.”

    With limited funds comes a strong sense of focus for Patel, and he is smart about where he’s investing. Although Après Pacific could be in a number of retailers and broaden distribution, he wants to focus on continuing to build brand awareness before spreading the brand too thin. As he looks to connect with investors and begin the fundraising journey, he is committed to building a skincare brand that continues to honor and embrace his South Asian roots.

    Recently, Patel has started to see brands pop up similar to Après Pacific’s vision. “They may have the money. But what’s more important is to have a community that loves your product and naturally becomes advocates of the brand — that’s not something you can easily replicate,” Patel says. “This isn’t a two-year plan for us; we are in this for the long haul. Slow and steady wins the race.”

    SKKN By Kim is Not Worth the Hype: Here are the products we recommend instead.

    You’ve probably heard a lot about Kim Kardashian’s new skincare line, SKKN by Kim.

    It first entered the news cycle just by virtue of being Kim’s brand. After shutting down KKW Beauty and KKW Fragrance, everyone wondered what Kim was going to do next. Surprisingly, her popular apparel brand Skims gets rave reviews for quality and comfort. So when she launched SKKN, she inevitably made headlines.


    SKKN claims to be “an innovative line of uncompromising skincare developed by Kim Kardashian. Through a visionary nine-product ritual, SKKN By Kim delivers nourishment, renewal, and an indulgent at-home experience.” But what is it, really?

    The packaging claims to be sustainable but was accused of greenwashing. Womp womp. The nine-piece collection also raised eyebrows for its price range, with products ranging from $43 to $95. The full collection includes a cleanser, toner, exfoliator, a hyaluronic acid serum, vitamin C8 serum, a face cream, an eye cream, oil drops, and night oil. It’s a luxury line, she said in defense, so expectations were high.

    Because at this point, celebrity brands are ubiquitous. Even Brad Pitt, who allegedly didn’t wash his face twice a day until his twenties (ew), has a new skin line. So what’s Kim bringing? Just her name? Her beige packaging — which is practically all she brought to her Beats collab?

    In SKKN’s press release, she stressed the quality of materials and the dermatology-first approach. “What began as a psoriasis diagnosis became the catalyst for my journey of skin-care discoveries, inspiring me to learn more about my skin and how to care for it,” she said. “Working with some of the top dermatologists and estheticians over the years has given me the incredible opportunity to learn from their expertise, and I knew I had to share my learnings.”

    SKKN has been around for a few months now, so we can safely say we’ve had a chance to sit with it and get past the hype to give you a real review.

    So is it worth it? Our editors say … no.

    Though it isn’t just another flop celebrity brand, there’s nothing special about it. And now, with Rhode Skin making headlines for introducing unique, versatile products at an affordable price point, SKKN products aren’t bringing anything new to the table.

    So what should you buy instead? We’re breaking down each reason you might have been tempted to add SKKN products to your cart or your wishlist — and what you can get to scratch that itch instead.

    You might think SKKN is reasonably priced…

    With skincare, I’m not afraid of paying higher prices for higher quality. But most SKKN products are pretty mid and their ingredients are nothing noteworthy (more on that later). The markups are a result of good marketing and Kim K’s affiliation with the brand. I don’t know about you, but I’m not down with the Kim tax.

    Brands like The Ordinary have proven how accessible it is to get high efficacy ingredients at an affordable price. But if you don’t want to do the work of decoding which ingredients at The Ordinary work for you, try brands with lower price points, similar clean ingredient values, and overall better products. We like the skincare offerings from Kosas or Indie Lee

    You might think SKKN is prestigious because it’s made by Kim Kardashian…

    Hate to burst your bubble, but very few “celebrity” brands are made by the celebrity. I’m sure you didn’t think Kim was in the lab cooking up your cleanser, but she probably wasn’t very involved in much of the ideation process either. She simply wrapped the products in her signature beige with her name on the label. And there’s not much that’s prestigious about that.

    And I don’t know about you, but I haven’t heard a single peep from the digital skincare community about any of her products in the past few months. I personally like to buy products that have the prestige of positive reviews. If stores I trust have picked them up, I know I can trust the quality. And if beauty lovers have actually integrated them into their routines, I know they work. I bought the Kosas Serum Spray — which is a novel product and unlike anything else I have — only after I’d heard about it from multiple different sources. And I am loyal to Indie Lee because it’s stocked in clean beauty stores I love and every product I’ve tried has worke. To me, that’s real prestige.

    You might think SKKN contains only good ingredients…

    SKKN, like many other brands, is actually full of filler ingredients. While it may “be certified clean” (which isn’t a regulated term so has no real value) and gluten free, the ingredients are pretty unremarkable. Nothing sets SKKN apart from any other brand in terms of formulation. And the efficacy isn’t even that strong.

    For products with actives like SKKN Vitamin C serum, I would definitely opt for something stronger and better. The Indie Lee CQ-10 Toner is a cult-favorite brightening powerhouse with more complex brightening ingredients. It’s also trusted by stores that specifically ban many harmful ingredients, so there’s more pedigree to its ingredients than a meaningless label.

    Jessica, I was blown away. I almost started crying. For the most part, I was doing green screen for everything. And this was the first time I’ve ever been in a movie like this before. When I saw the final product, I almost got down to my knees and started weeping because I felt so grateful. I can’t believe this is what I am in. I never, in my wildest dreams, could have imagined it to be that. And the way they shot those action sequences and the soundtrack with it, it was art. That’s a combination of not just the CGI and the special-effects team but Jaume, most definitely Jaume. And then our DP, Lawrence Sher, he’s just out of this world. He won an Oscar for Joker. And just going back to the Western references—like Lawrence of Arabia, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly—those big cinematic-scope Westerns were definitely a style inspiration for this movie. And oh my god, did they pull it off.

    Okay, let’s switch gears for a minute. Everyone wants to know when season two of Sex/Life is happening. What, if anything, can you tell us about what’s next for Billie?

    [The date of] season two of Sex/Life has not been announced yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s happening next year sometime. But I’m not at liberty to say more than that now. All I can say about that is the season this year is a little different. The themes this year are really about hope and second chances—wherever your imagination can go, if you can imagine Billie talking about second chances, [and] what that would mean. 

    And for me, I’m sitting in this chair right now in front of you. I don’t really know too many people who have this opportunity. To sit here and talk to you about the Netflix series, this huge movie I’m a part of, and to be a female in this position is just really fucking cool to me. At the end of the day, I sit back and think, “Damn—no matter how things pan out, I’m just lucky.” I’m so grateful.

    The show was watched by 67 million households in its first four weeks and centers on empowered female sexuality, which we don’t see a lot on TV. Did you know it would be such a hit? 

    No, not at all. My job as an actor is to tell the highest level of truth for this character. That’s the only thing I can think of—to focus on her emotions, her feelings, who she is. To make sure I’m acting between the lines and to be so full of life and be present and just raw, that was my job. I also had a lot of personal life to draw from at the moment. I’m actually writing a book right now about all of that. But I was floored when I saw the response that all those people tuned in. Again, I sit here with so much humbleness. I guess hard work works. And keep going. Just put your head down, stop and smell the roses every once in a while, but this too shall pass just like everything else. I don’t get too attached to success. I don’t get too attached to failure. I just try to do me every single step of the way, and as long as my kids are provided for and I’m happy and healthy and they are too, that’s all I care about.

    You Gotta Keep An Eye Out For Selener

    By now, you’ve seen it — the series of photos that broke the internet. You know what I’m talking about. Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez were pictured together at the Academy Museum Gala, and jaws hit the floor across the nation.


    Years from now, we’ll still be able to say where we were when we saw the Hailey and Selena photos. This is how they felt when the Cold War ended. This is the Berlin Wall falling. This is man’s first step on the moon. Earth-shattering, unprecedented, and a whole new frontier.

    The vibe has shifted. And Justin Bieber must have a new lock screen.

    I’ll admit, at first, I thought the picture was fake. I thought it was one of those photoshopped fan images, like those 90s edits of Br*d Pitt, J*hnny Depp, and L*ondardo DiCaprio all haphazardly photoshopped into the same image. I scrolled on, fully expecting the caption to be by some anonymous moderator begging fellow fans to stop the hate or something. Then I realized the image was posted on the verified Vogue Magazine account. It was a re-gram from celebrity photographer Tyrell Hampton, who captioned the instantly-iconic image with the fitting: “plot twist.”

    It hasn’t even been 24 hours but I’m still in a state of shock. That being said, I never really bought into the whole Selena vs. Hailey narrative, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t aware of it. So much of fandom culture is built on fabricated feuds. Just look at the Don’t Worry Darling press tour.

    But this one has gone on for years. And Hailey recently addressed it in her episode on the Call Her Daddy podcast, saying, “I can say, period, point blank, I was never with him when he was in a relationship with anybody — that’s the end of it.”

    Selena has also called for an end to the rumors and Hailey hate. After all, she’s booked and busy! With the success of her Hulu show, Only Murders in the Building, and her upcoming documentary, My Mind & Me, as well as her brand, Rare Beauty, she doesn’t have time to worry about her ex.

    But even so, I could have never predicted that photo.

    While both stars could have continued to milk the press from this alleged feud — all press is good press, right? — this image shows that they’re more invested in a narrative where women don’t fight over men. We love to see it.

    Hopefully, the fans will finally leave both of these women alone. And this photo will make it into history books as the most influential peace summit of all time. Give them a Nobel Prize! Nature is healing!


    While I’m still reeling from this photo, Selena and Hailey are probably back to minding their business — literally. Both are beauty entrepreneurs in their own right, and I have been browsing their respective selections since the photo dropped.
