    Using the wrong cleanser is just as bad as not cleansing your skin effectively. Rouleau says if you don’t choose the right formula for your skin type, you can risk everything from irritation to dehydration and a compromised moisture barrier. In other words, you’re really rolling the dice, and no one wants to do that with their skin. 

    Luckily, Rouleau has tips for choosing the right cleanser for your skin type. Start by paying attention to the texture of the cleanser. “If you struggle with very oily skin, gel cleansers are the way to go,” she says. “If your skin is on the drier side, you can opt for a creamy cleanser (or, if you wear heavier makeup or lots of sunscreen, a balm for nighttime). For those with combination skin, I usually recommend a gel cleanser in the morning and a creamy lotion or balm cleanser at night.” 

    Just keep in mind the texture of the cleanser determines how it should be used. “Gel cleansers should be applied to wet skin, while cleansers with a cream, balm, or lotion texture should be applied to dry skin,” Rouleau says. “If you apply a cleanser to dry skin, start by massaging it for 30 seconds. Then, add water to emulsify and massage.” Once it’s dissolved sunscreen, makeup, dirt, and debris, wipe or rinse your skin clean.

    I’m going to be honest: For glowy skin, I’ll try just about anything. I have my skincare routine down to a science. I use prescription retinol every other night. I’ve gotten a slew of in-office treatments for the best skin possible—Botox, lasers… You name it. Recently, I even got an InstaFacial (a celeb-approved treatment for instantly rejuvenated skin that involves micro-needling your own plasma back into your face) and have been using the new products designed to mimic results at home. You could say I’m pretty serious about good skin. 

    No matter what I do to my face, though, the one thing I do that gets the most compliments takes me two seconds flat. It’s also one of the best possible things you can do for your skin. My secret? Glowy sunscreen. 

    SPF is always a nonnegotiable for me. “Sunscreen is key to helping protect the skin against UV radiation, which can contribute to skin cancer, sun damage, and skin signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles,” says Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. “It is important to remember to wear sunscreen every day and make sure to reapply every two hours.”

    Using sunscreen with an added glow is the best way to protect your skin while also making it look absolutely ethereal. Don’t just take my word for it—derms agree. “Given the importance of wearing sunscreen every day, it’s important to find a formulation that is easy and enjoyable to wear. With sunscreens offering hydrating and glowy finishes, some people are even using sunscreen in place of makeup,” Garshick adds.

    Count me as one of those people. My favorite thing to do, particularly in the summer when makeup tends to slide right off my face, is use a glowy sunscreen as my base and spot-treat the rest of my skin with concealer or a lighter foundation on days that I want a bit more coverage.     Holistic esthetician Tammy Fender shares exactly what lactic acid is and where it comes from. “Lactic acid is typically derived from milk or fermented vegetables and is known for its ability to exfoliate the skin, bringing out its tone and brightness,” she explains.

    According to board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, lactic acid is one of the gentlest chemical exfoliants you can use, making it suitable for dry or sensitive skin types. “Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that acts as a gentle exfoliant,” he says.
    “As an exfoliant, it helps remove dry, dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, revealing smoother, softer, healthier skin.” Joie Tavernise, NYC medical esthetician and founder of JTAV Clinical Skincare, also shares an interesting tidbit of info about lactic acid. “It will not disrupt the pH balance of the skin or cause redness and irritation,” she says. 

    Lactic acid is also unique in the way that it has both exfoliating and hydrating properties, so it’s a great option if you’re dealing with acne and moisture-barrier damage or just have dry, sensitive skin. I can personally attest to this, as I struggled to find an exfoliating product I could use daily that didn’t irritate my sensitive skin or cause my barrier damage to get worse. Camp says, “Lactic acid is often suitable for dry or sensitive skin types. It does not penetrate the skin deeply, and as a result, there may be fewer side effects than other acid products. If you do have a history of sensitive skin, it is a good idea to do a test spot on the inside of your arm prior to applying it more liberally.”

    First, there are a few things you’ll want to avoid if you have eczema, sensitive skin, or are prone to reactions. You’ll want to treat your eczema-prone skin as extremely sensitive. Rebecca Marcus MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Maei MD, says “For those with eczema, choosing a sunscreen that will not irritate already sensitive skin is key. Look for fragrance-free formulas, and when possible, choose mineral-based actives (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) over chemical sunscreens. Hydrating, skin barrier boosting ingredients such as ceramides added to a formula are a plus and will help to repair compromised skin.”

    Other ingredients known to trigger sensitive skin are things like alcohol. As Marcus mentioned above, it’s also best to avoid sunscreens with chemical filters like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and octinoxate as they can be irritating. These types of chemical filters have been linked to triggering allergic contact dermatitis so it’s best to avoid them if you can. 

    Soothing ingredients like niacinamide and bisabolol are also helpful in calming redness so you’ll want to look for those as well. Marcus also provided a few tips for applying SPF with eczema. “When applying sunscreen to skin that is eczema-prone or actively flaring with eczema, it may be helpful to first apply a layer of skin-barrier-boosting, eczema-friendly cream such as Curel Itch Defense Lotion before applying sunscreen. Ceramides and glycerin will serve to hydrate skin, while petrolatum will form a protective barrier over the skin to help keep irritants out. If you choose this method, make sure to use a mineral based sunscreen, as the active ingredients in physical blockers are meant to sit on top of the skin and physically block UV rays. (Chemical sunscreens, on the other hands, are meant to be absorbed and therefore could be less effective when applied over an occlusive layer).”

    The Highs And Lows Of Following TikTok Beauty Trends

    Do you remember the last time you saw a beauty trend and you were like “should I try that?” I know what you’re thinking: “
    most predictable intro ever,” right?

    Well, here’s the thing: I actually try the beauty trend.

    Call it FOMO or the inability to be a free-thinker, but I would be a hypocrite if I said I didn’t want to hop on every TikTok beauty trend I’ve seen just to see if it works. If nothing else, I’m a product of the corporate machine and fall into any marketing scam thrown onto my socials. But, hey, if it changes my life…great! If it doesn’t, I can’t say I didn’t try.

    Blame content creators on TikTok, who post their flawless makeup routines and create looks that the rest of us can only dream of imitating. And, reader, I dare to dream. If someone with flawless skin is going to share their routine, then I’m going to try some of their products. It’s the ultimate recommendation.

    However, I’ve learned the hard way that no one’s skin is identical. So, even if some products make one person’s skin glow, they may irritate yours. And don’t get me started on the brands that pay creators to say good things about their products, just to convince viewers to buy their products.

    So, yes, there can be scams and there can be wastes of time…but such is life. Either way, I like to experience the result of a product or trend for myself and make my own decisions. Which is how I’ve come to write this article.

    I’ve spent years now falling for trends and trying out the newest, hottest products on the market as they cycle through. All so you can learn from my fatal mistakes and steal my successes. Here’s what worked for me and what didn’t.

    Snail Mucin

    After damaging my skin barrier during a weekend ski trip, I went feral trying to find some sort of remedy. This was right around the time that the K-beauty “slugging” trend launched into America, and I was desperate…even if it meant throwing snail secretion on my face in a Hail Mary attempt.

    There are plenty of benefits for using snail mucin besides ultra-moisturization. It brightens up dark spots from acne marks and sun damage, reverses signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines by stimulating collagen production, and contains antioxidants like zinc and vitamins A and E.

    I didn’t want to love it, but I did. While this may be a dated trend in K-beauty standards, it’s one product I’ve used in its entirety and will be purchasing again. It successfully restored my dry, flaky skin and gives me a glow like no other serum. There’s nothing like this product right now, I’m sticking with it.

    Bright Pink Blushes

    The makeup industry
    lost its mind when the Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Blush went viral. The bright, almost bubblegum pink was all the rage…and while I was fine missing out, a few too many brands duped it until I was forced to try.

    It was during the time where “Cold Girl Makeup” was trending…that look of pink flush on your cheeks you get after you play in the snow. And since blush is the new contour, why not invest all of my money into the brightest pink I’ve ever seen?

    I chose the Patrick Starrr ONE/SIZE Blush Trio because it came with a pink highlight as well, which is perfect for a sunkissed look in the summer. The trio has both a cream and powder blush, but I found myself only needing the powder to achieve the pop of color I wanted. It’s great, but definitely not for your everyday look.

    Brow Products

    I live by the mantra that you shouldn’t be spending a lot of money on brow products…I’ve seen no difference in a set of eyebrows that use the Refy products from those who use NYX. Honestly, I see the brow makeup industry as one of the biggest scams on the market.

    It’s almost impossible to get your brows to stay in place all day without lamination, so most products that advertise “staying all day” are lying. It’s just not that easy. I’ve even seen people have better luck with drugstore hairspray making their brows stay than most luxury products.

    If you think about it, everyone loves the NYX brow freeze…but you see an equal amount of people telling you to “save your money” on a brow product from Sephora. So don’t fall for the gimmicks of buying “separate brow brushes” (buy spoolies on Amazon if you must) and pay $6 for a tube of brow gel instead.

    Pink Setting Powders

    While I agree that translucent setting powders can leave a white cast or give flashback in photographs, I was always loyal to my DermaBlend Powder. It kept my makeup in place and gave me a poreless look while taking away unwanted shine. But, I wanted to see if I could get rid of that ghastly pale shadow it would sometimes leave on my face if left on for too long.

    Sure, we all know the “baking” trend with setting powder…and I’m a habitual participant. But, baking for too long can mitigate my tan and make me look a little sick. So, I tried the Huda Beauty Setting Powder in Cherry Blossom. Since pinks cancel out the heavy bags under my eyes, I figured it’s worth a shot.

    To be honest, I don’t see that big of a difference between the translucent Dermablend and the pink Huda Beauty powders. Yes, they’re both great setting powders. However, the pink doesn’t make a significant eough difference to use one over the other.

    Let’s be honest—everybody loves that “just got back from vacation” glow. The problem? A real post-vacation glow often comes with a heaping dose of sun damage. That’s why many people turn to self-tanners for a faux glow. 

    As someone with naturally Edward Cullen–toned skin (read: very pale), I have turned to self-tanners many, many times to make it look like the sun and I have actually met at some point in my life. Self-tanners are a great way to give any skin tone a bronzed boost, but it’s no secret that not all self-tanners are created equally. Choose the wrong formula and you’re bound to end up with a streaky, splotchy, orange-hued mess that you can’t get off no matter how much you scrub. Think colby jack cheese rather than a bronzy glow. 

    There are tons of “best self-tanner” lists out there, but I’m not going to lie—they’ve steered me wrong before. That’s why I took matters into my own hands. To find the crème de la crème of self-tanners, I started with a list of 21, which I whittled down to 13 to test. For science, I applied the same amount of each self-tanner to my legs and watched them all develop and fade over the course of five days, which included multiple showers, workouts, and even a hot-yoga session. From there, I chose my 10 favorites.     Meghann Fahy’s Minimal Beauty Routine Is Built on These 6 Iconic Items

    If you’re anything like us, you waited with bated breath to watch the finale of The White Lotus. You probably also couldn’t stop talking about it with friends, colleagues, and even random acquaintances at the hair salon. While there are so many characters to discuss, one of our favorite ones was Daphne, the breezy hotel guest who always looks effortlessly put-together under the Sicilian sun.  Meghann Fahy, who plays Daphne, seems similar to her character, in that she has a friendly, approachable way about her and a rather effortless approach to beauty. We caught up with the actress to talk about all things skincare and makeup, including how she prevents allergies from wreaking havoc on her routine, the ins and outs of her decidedly minimal makeup bag, and the beauty tools and devices she swears by. Ahead, learn everything there is to know about Fahy’s personal beauty routine. We think it would make Daphne proud. 

    Fahy has partnered with Astepro, a brand that’s known for its antihistamine medication that relieves allergy symptoms like congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. She says it’s “essential” in her day-to-day life to keep symptoms at bay. So in a way, it’s kind of like the first step in her daily beauty routine. “I’ve suffered from seasonal allergies for my entire life in a debilitating and miserable way,” Fahy says. “Between shooting and my love for the outdoors, Astepro has become a crucial part of my routine because it starts working in 30 minutes and is steroid-free. It’s super convenient to throw in my purse and bring with me on set, so I can be as active as I want without constantly suffering from congestion, sneezing, etc.”  

    As fellow allergy sufferers, we wanted to know if she had any tips and tricks for relieving redness and puffiness. As it turns out, she does. It’s a TikTok-backed tool that we use in our personal beauty routines on days when we’re feeling like our skin is puffier or more inflamed than normal. “I’m a big fan of ice face rollers,” she says. “It feels great and always helps with puffiness and redness!” 

    As for the other skincare products she swears by, Fahy relies on a couple of effective basics to keep her skin protected, glowing, and clear.  Like we said, she’s a beauty minimalist at heart. 

    The first is Paula’s Choice Essential Glow Moisturizer ($12), which is a two-in-one sunscreen and moisturizer. It offers SPF 30 along with niacinamide, resveratrol, and vitamins C and E. Together, these ingredients defend the skin against environmental aggressors and the damaging free radicals they create.

    At night, she uses Origins’ Super Spot Remover ($20) to treat any blemishes that might pop up. Its hero ingredient is saw palmetto, which helps control oil production, reduce shine, and prevent breakouts. 

    The fourth and final essential product in Fahy’s routine is an LED light mask. She says she’s a big fan of red-light therapy, and we are too. After all, it’s been shown to reduce inflammation and stimulate the skin to produce collagen. Over time, this can reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming. 

    We like Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s DRX Spectralite Faceware Pro ($455). It has three light options: red light, blue light (which can help treat and prevent breakouts), and a combination of the two. The idea is that you can customize your treatment based on your skin concerns. 

    When it comes to makeup, Fahy is just as minimal as she is with her skincare routine. “I think I’m more of a minimalist, even though I buy like I’m a maximalist,” she says. “My go-to routine is a tinted moisturizer and mascara. I love mascara.” 

    Her go-to product to defend against allergy-related redness is an iconic one that, if we might add, works just as well to disguise dark circles and blemishes. “I always have my YSL All Hours Concealer in my bag in case I need to cover up any redness around my nose and, of course, purse-sized packets of tissues!” she says.

    Lastly, we had to know what makeup products were used to create Daphne’s signature summery look on The White Lotus. According to Fahy, the vibe was “look put-together without looking like you tried,” which fits our idea of Daphne being somewhat effortless.

    “We kept Daphne pretty glowy and natural,” Fahy says. “The Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation was a staple as well as cream eye shadows.” This foundation, though expensive, is an iconic product. Makeup artists and editors love it thanks to its creamy formula, natural-looking finish, and buildable coverage.

    If you know me, then you may have noticed that I’ve become a low-key anti-anti-aging crusader. So I’m going to step off my soapbox for a quick second to give a shout-out to my mom, Gerri, who, at 62-years old, only has half a wrinkle on her face (a single line between her eyebrows that was probably born right around the time of my rebellious teenage years). In fact, I’ll venture to say mom looks about 20 years younger than she is. Cool? Yes! A measure of her value in this world? Absolutely not!

    I’m definitely a fan of the product after having tested a number of its newest trending shades (I tried Sherbet, Sour Candy, Ice Pop, Rock Candy, and Jelly Bean, which have all since sold out), and it turns out professional makeup artists are just as obsessed. “I love that it can be used on lips and cheeks for the perfect juicy, monochromatic look, which is so trendy right now,” Lamback says. “You can wear it alone on bare skin/lips thanks to its moisturizing properties, or you can level up your look by layering it over your fave lipstick or blush for a gorgeous, enhanced pop of color! Sit back and watch your confidence soar—you’ve been shifted!”

    With so many gorgeous shades to choose from, which all offer unique shades of pink according to your pH level, it can be hard to pick just one. “My absolute faves are Jelly Bean, which starts as a pastel blue, and Rock Candy, which starts as a pastel purple,” she continues. “They make my lips feel soft and hydrated, and the color payoff is amazing.” She’s not wrong. The color payoff was the first thing I noticed about it due to my unfortunate habit of swiping more product than needed onto the cheeks. All I needed to do to save it was blend, blend, blend for a gorgeous, natural-looking finish that lasted all day. With this Tarte tint, a little goes a long way.
