The Lineup is a monthly series where we’re giving you an inside peek at the beauty lineups of cool fashion people, editors, makeup artists, hairstylists, and estheticians—all the people we trust the most. Get ready for a behind-the-scenes look at all the can’t-live-without products that make their worlds go ’round.

To me, one of the most inspiring qualities is the ability to make something beautiful out of a devastating situation. Alina Mehrle, the founder of Ameōn, definitely possesses this trait. In 2018, on her 30th birthday, Mehrle was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She persevered through chemotherapy treatments but didn’t anticipate that the medicine would make her skin so dry and sensitive. She looked for solutions beyond Botox and injections and turned to natural skincare products, but everything either burned or irritated her skin. “It’s already a difficult situation to be vulnerable, completely bald, and very fragile, but not knowing what to do is a new level of anguish,” she explains.

  • I Just Found the Best K-Beauty Brand for Acne, and Everything Is Under $35

I Just Found the Best K-Beauty Brand for Acne, and Everything Is Under $35

    [ad_1]

After years of using drying acne medications, I noticed that my skin barrier wasn’t in great shape. If you’ve ever dealt with acne in any form, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. Sometimes, you become so focused on drying out your acne, that you forget hydration is also absolutely key. (Ask any dermatologist!) Needless to say, I discovered a little over a year ago that I’d done significant damage to my moisture barrier (live and learn). But every expert I spoke to reminded me how resilient an organ skin is, so if you’re struggling with a similar problem, just know that it will heal.

It has been a bit of a slow process finding the right skincare for me, but I recently got very into K-beauty due to its highly effective formulas that all come at a really affordable price point. A lot of Korean skincare focuses on maintaining a healthy skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier is what keeps bacteria and other aggressors from permeating your skin and causing things like acne. I love this approach because many brands offer acne-clearing formulas that are effective yet gentle and non-drying.

One such brand I found that I’m a huge fan of is Aestura. I recently started using its Atobarrier365 Hydro Essence ($29), and let me tell you, the difference I’ve seen in my skin is astounding. My skin used to become dehydrated really easily, which I think was contributing to breakouts. After adding this essence, I’ve seen such a helpful difference in moisture levels and overall skin health. The best part? It’s only $29! I’d say that’s pretty great for a high-quality formula. Pretty much all the products in Aestura’s acne collection are under $35—a win for both your skin and your wallet. TBH, as a beauty editor, I’ve used less effective products that were three times that price. (Don’t @ me.) I spoke to Jeong-Hwan Kim, Ph.D., senior researcher at Aestura Derma Lab, about the products and how you can help maintain a healthy skin barrier. Read on for what he had to share along with a few of my other favorite K-beauty brands for acne.

  • Alix Earle on Accutane, Skincare, and the Self-Tanning Product She Loves Most

Alix Earle on Accutane, Skincare, and the Self-Tanning Product She Loves Most

    [ad_1]

I’ll get right to it. I follow you on Instagram and TikTok, and you always look so bronzed. What’s your go-to product, and what’s your routine like?

My favorite self-tanner is Bondi Sands Technocolor ($27) in the color Emerald. The way Technocolor works is you take this skin quiz, and it finds the color that best suits your skin. Honestly, it’s been great for me. It gives my skin a nice glow, and it’s a good color for me.

As far as my routine goes, I definitely exfoliate before. I try to do my due diligence when putting on the tanner, making sure I get in every crevice and everything is covered. Sometimes I’ll put lotion on the parts of my skin that are drier so the self-tanner doesn’t stick too much to those, which is how I try to make it look as flawless as possible. Then, obviously, with the upkeep, moisturizing and putting lotion over the self-tanner is super important to have it last as long as possible.

Do you have a favorite moisturizer and exfoliator for your body?

Bondi Sands has a Self-Tan Eraser ($24) and an Exfoliating Mitt ($9). As far as lotion goes, I’m not too picky. I try to do something fragrance-free because my skin is super sensitive. The self-tanner is also fragrance-free, which is why I like the Technocolor especially.

This is kind of a fun question. Let’s play Fuck, Marry, Kill with self-tanner, hair extensions, and lashes.

I’m going to kill lashes because I don’t normally use those. We’ll fuck hair extensions, and we’re going to marry self-tanner.

Those would be my exact picks. Speaking of beauty products, in general, there are a few beauty products you’re definitely known for using: the Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Drops, the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Contour Wand, and the Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil. If you had to only keep one, which one would it be and why?

I think that I would keep the Hollywood Contour Wand ($42) just because I’m obsessed with a bronzed look, and besides having bronzed skin already, I think it definitely does a good job of creating that nice contoured and sculpted look for your face.

Contour is my favorite part of my makeup routine.

    It makes such a difference.

What is a beauty product that you’ve been loving lately? Is there one you’ve recently discovered that you’re excited about?

I have loved the Bondi Sands Technocolor Self-Tanner. I discovered it while I was still on Accutane, which made a big difference to me because it makes your skin so sensitive to the sun, and self-tanning helps a lot.

Definitely. Is there a product that we’d be surprised to know is in your makeup bag?

Surprisingly, recently, I’ve been using black or brown eyeliner to line my waterline. I’ve been using them from Ilia. I know I’ve been kind of known throughout the past year for this white-eyeliner look, but I have been experiencing and I’ve been liking the dark colors for my waterline. I think that would be shocking for some people to hear.

That is shocking actually. I feel like you’re so known for the white liner. You’re switching things up!

I know, I know. I’m trying different things out.

  • Derms Say This Underrated Ingredient Is Like Hitting Undo on Hyperpigmentation

Derms Say This Underrated Ingredient Is Like Hitting Undo on Hyperpigmentation

    [ad_1]

Whether you call it hyperpigmentation, dark spots, or discoloration, those pesky dark patches are one of the most stubborn skin concerns to treat. Sure, professional treatments are effective, but not everyone has the time, money, or access. That’s where at-home skincare products come in, and while they won’t give you the same rapid results as in-office treatments, they can make a major difference over time. Trust us, we’ve seen it with our own eyes.

The most common ingredients for brightening hyperpigmentation at home include exfoliating acids (specifically AHAs, such as glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids), vitamin C, and retinol. But there’s another ingredient that can work wonders on hyperpigmentation. It’s called alpha arbutin, and it’s known for delivering brighter, more even-toned skin, no matter what your hyperpigmentation is caused by—hormones, post-blemish marks, or sun damage. Keep scrolling to learn everything there is to know about this underrated ingredient and how it can transform your skin. Plus, shop our favorite alpha arbutin products.

15 Products Everyone Wanted to Get Their Hands on at Sephoria

    [ad_1]

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Sephoria 2023. The event took place both virtually and in person in New York City. Over 50 brands attended, including cult-favorites like Summer Fridays, Glossier, Nars, and more. Each brand set up an experiential booth that featured things like their star products, interactive experiences, and even founder meet and greets (ahem, Patrick Ta himself was there one day).

While I was there, I got to wander the Sephoria hallways and stop by every booth I wanted. As a beauty editor, I often get to try the latest and greatest products in the beauty world, but I don’t always get a chance to see products out in the wild. One of the best parts for me was seeing which products caused a major stir at Sephoria, because that means they’re worth the hype and more. Keep reading for some of the products that people were running to get their hands on at Sephoria (and are available at Sephora)—and believe me when I say, every single one of these is incredible.

When we said luxe, we meant it. This little black box retails for $115 and contains eight individual eye masks. It’s certainly a steep price relative to some of the other eye masks on the market, but each one contains a cocktail of good-for-skin active ingredients.

The hero ingredients are retinol, niacinamide, and peptides. Although, there’s also hyaluronic acid and rose-hip extract. Together, they promise to moisturize, plump, brighten, and smooth the under-eye area for a luminous and well-rested appearance. And it only takes 20 minutes of wear to reap all the benefits. So yeah, it’s no wonder celebs swear by them.

  • Here’s How Ashley Graham Achieves the Most Natural-Looking Tan Possible

Here’s How Ashley Graham Achieves the Most Natural-Looking Tan Possible

    [ad_1]

If there’s one thing we know about Ashley Graham, it’s that she’s going to have a flawless tan. That definitely rang true for her time at Paris Fashion Week. Before jetting off to the City of Lights, Graham got a tan from St. Tropez skin-finishing expert and celebrity tanner Sophie Evans using St. Tropez products.

Not only did Graham get the most flawless tan to go to Paris Fashion Week, but she also managed to maintain it while she was there. If you’ve ever tried maintaining a spray tan, you’ll know that is quite impressive. Graham is leaving Paris just as bronzed as when she arrived, and it’s thanks to a few key products that she uses for maintenance.

Luckily, I got the breakdown of every product Graham used for her “just got back from Bali” glow, including the products Evans used on her and the products she uses to maintain her glow. Keep reading for the breakdown.

  • How to check for breast cancer, according to the experts

How to check for breast cancer, according to the experts

    [ad_1]

Breast cancer awareness month is upon us — and first and foremost, it should serve as a reminder of just how important it is for all of us to perform regular breast checks. According to Breast Cancer UK, there 56,000 new cases of breast cancer every year — in fact, it is the most common cancer in the world, with roughly 12% of all cancers being female breast cancer.

We’re all aware that we should check for breast cancer each month. But, how many of us actually do it? And how many of us really know what we should be looking for? While some have developed a good habit of regularly examining for signs, lots of us don’t make the time, or would rather bury our heads in the sand. But regular check-ups can save lives and ensure – if we ever do discover something that shouldn’t be there – that it’s treated as quickly as possible.

It’s clear there’s a lot of confusion around what exactly to look out for. A shocking six million women declared they don’t know how to check their breasts for cancer and a staggering 80% of women are unclear on what could increase their risk of breast cancer, according to Bupa Health Clinics.

It may seem scary, but getting to know our bodies regularly is the best way to keep on top of any changes and get them checked out if necessary.

    When to check your boobs

Try and choose the same time every month to check them – after your period is best – so you can get to know what’s normal for you.

What to feel for when checking your boobs:

    • It is important to get to now the normal rhythm of your boobs so you will detect anything abnormal quickly.
    • Feel for irregular lumps (which can be relatively small) that are firm and solid.

What does a breast lump feel like?

A doctor will be able to properly examine you but a cancerous lump may feel quite rounded, soft, and tender. It may also feel quite be painful.

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer to look out for

Aside from a lump, there are seven other signs that we should be looking out for (all of which are listed below) – if you spot any of these, it’s best to see your doctor. Most of the time, there’ll be another explanation for your symptom, but early detection is essential when it comes to treating breast cancer.

First, look at your breasts and check if you can notice anything visually. Lift your arms in the air to check underneath your armpits, too. Then, use the flat part of your fingers to feel and press across your breasts, armpit, collarbone and nipples. If you get into the habit of doing this regularly, you’ll quickly get to know what’s normal for you.

  • How 3 Latin American Beauty Brands Use Sustainability to Tap Into Their Roots

How 3 Latin American Beauty Brands Use Sustainability to Tap Into Their Roots

    [ad_1]

On its face, beauty may seem like one of the least sustainable industries. For a long time, that’s been true thanks to factors such as excessive packaging, plastic production, and unsustainable resources like palm oil. In recent years, the move toward sustainable beauty products has gained momentum. Guided by their cultural heritage, sustainability hasn’t been a choice for many Latin American beauty founders. It’s a nonnegotiable.

Climate change is arguably at its most critical point in Latin America. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the Amazon rainforest absorbs more greenhouse gases than any other tropical forest, but it’s been ceaselessly whittled down. In the past 50 years, it’s lost almost 300,000 square miles. For context, that’s a bigger amount of land than the entire country of France. The Amazon isn’t the only Latin American forest that’s been ravaged by deforestation. Other forests, like the Gran Chaco, have lost critical amounts of foliage. Soil erosion and water scarcity have led to food and resource shortages, reports Earth.org. Latin American countries are also facing unhealthy amounts of air pollution, according to a study published in World Health Statistics Quarterly

Needless to say, sustainability efforts are more important than ever in Latin America and the rest of the world. That stretches to every part of life, whether it’s through recycling, conserving resources, or even choosing the products we buy and consume carefully. In the beauty realm, this means buying products from brands committed to sustainability as an ideology, not just a marketing tactic.

The founders of Tata Harper, Ere Perez, and Ceremonia have managed to not only prioritize climate goals but also find ways to tap into their Latin American roots, which are incredibly important to all three founders. Tata Harper, Ere Perez, and Ceremonia’s Babba Rivera choose to highlight sustainably sourced ingredients from their ancestors’ countries in their product formulations. “We pour a hearty dose of Mexican flair into everything we do,” says Perez, founder of her eponymous makeup brand, who grew up in Mexico. Keep reading to hear from all three founders on what makes their brands sustainable and why sustainability matters to them from a cultural standpoint.

These Light Therapy Devices Are Like At-Home Cortisone Shots for Acne

    [ad_1]

When you’re targeting acne specifically, you’ll likely want to opt for a blue LED since it kills bacteria on the skin. “Skin bacteria are one of the contributing factors of acne, along with oil production, clogged pores, and inflammation,” says board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD. “Bacteria may be susceptible to effects of blue light on skin, which includes the production of reactive oxygen species. A reduction in bacteria may lead to improvements in acne.”

Other forms of LED light are also beneficial to the skin (and may even help acne in the process, too). “Red light can stimulate collagen production, [which] may help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time as well as improve the overall texture of the skin,” says Garshick. Yellow light may also help with sun damage and skin aging.

I Spent 7 Days in Scotland—These Beauty Essentials Endured Rain, Wind, and Sweat

    [ad_1]

Last week, I was lucky enough to fly to Scotland and spend seven days exploring Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Luss (a small village on the shores of Loch Lomond). The weather was just what you’d expect it to be. Five out of the seven days were dark and gloomy with pelting rain and blowing wind. While I normally wouldn’t mind that weather—in fact, I’d embrace it—I knew I’d be spending a lot of time outside, and I wanted to look somewhat put-together.

Luckily, I checked the weather before leaving, so I was prepared. Before boarding my first flight, I assembled what I consider to be a pretty epic beauty edit. I packed a skin-soothing face mask to prevent travel-induced dryness and irritation. I packed a humidity-resistant styling product to keep my hair smooth and shiny despite the rain. I even packed a lip-plumping-and-conditioning duo, because I knew I wouldn’t be wearing a lot of makeup, and I at least wanted my lips to look full and hydrated. Basically, I gathered the finest fall beauty products and put them to the test, hoping they’d hold up to rain, wind, and sweat. And guess what? They did.

Editors Agree—Lawless’s New “Forget the Filler” Cream is Magic in a Bottle

    [ad_1]

“I’m a huge fan of the Lawless Forget the Filler glosses, balms, and lip mask, so I was super excited to try the moisturizer—especially with the Maxi-Youth peptide technology in the formula. I’ve been using the cream now for about two weeks, and I’m impressed with how my skin already looks super glowy and hydrated. It layers beautifully with sunscreen and under my complexion products, and my laugh lines appear less prominent, so I’m excited to see how more results take shape as I continnue to use it in my skincare lineup.” — Marianne Mychaskiw, beauty correspondent, NBC California Live

“I hate when my makeup pills. As soon as I touch my face and feel the product start to clump together in teeny-tiny particles of skincare, I can’t stop fixating on it, and I will just rub all my makeup off. Which is why I really, really rely on moisturizers that play nice with my makeup, and Forget the Filler *is* one of those—and then some. It feels rich without being heavy, and makes my skin look and feel so supple and smooth. Plus, I have naturally oily skin that breaks out easily (I have hormonal acne that my dermatologist prescribed retinol for), and this moisturizer is so gentle and doesn’t cause zit drama (it’s formulated to be noncomedogenic). I can’t really speak to the anti-aging benefits (I don’t really have much for wrinkles or fine lines yet), but I can say that Forget the Filler makes my skin look more alive? Like I actually slept for eight hours? And drank the recommended amount of water? It’s just a beautiful everyday moisturizer that I’m going to be buying again and again once my tub runs out.” — Gina Vaynshteyn, commerce director, InStyle, SheKnows
