After 3 Weeks, I Swear This Matcha-Spiked Body Lotion Gave Me Firmer Skin

    [ad_1]

I think bodycare is consistently overlooked. I’ve talked to friends, family members, and other beauty editors, and so many of them have said the same thing: “I’m way better about caring for the skin on my face than I am about caring for the skin on my body.”

I’m not saying I’m any better. Although I’ve improved upon my bodycare routine in recent years, it’s nowhere near perfect. Still, I’m constantly testing new bodycare products to see what can give me smooth, plump, bright, and glowing skin from the neck down. I want to know I’m using products that are actively and holistically treating my skin—not just moisturizing it. Well, recently, a new product came across my desk, and after using it for a mere three weeks, I think I found my latest bodycare obsession. Instead of simply moisturizing my skin like so many other formulas, this body lotion also firms, smooths, strengthens, and protects it from environmental aggressors. It’s a one-and-done formula that does so much it almost feels unfair to call it a body lotion at all. Keep scrolling to see which one it is and why I can’t shut up about it.

  • My Loved Ones Are Notoriously Picky—15 Sephora Gifts I Know They Won’t Return

My Loved Ones Are Notoriously Picky—15 Sephora Gifts I Know They Won’t Return

    [ad_1]

Holiday gifts are tricky. Unless someone explicitly tells you what they want, it’s always kind of a guessing game on if they’ll like a specific gift or not. There’s nothing worse than when a gift doesn’t quite hit the mark or when you accidentally gift your friend or family member with something they already have three of. In the realm of beauty, it’s even trickier—most makeup, skincare, and hair products are out of bounds if you don’t know someone’s exact shades, skin type, or hair texture.

Nevertheless, if you figure out the perfect gifting formula, beauty gifts are some of the absolute best things to give. In my eyes, the ideal beauty gift equation is this: an innovative or unique product + something the person you’re shopping for might not get themselves + practical with a hint of whimsy. Keep reading for gifts I think fit that description, plus who they’re best for, ordered from least expensive to most. Save for two exceptions that barely count, I’m not really into minis or gift sets—these products are full-size and sure to be hits.

  • I tried slugging for a month, here’s what I learned

I tried slugging for a month, here’s what I learned

    [ad_1]

If you’ve spent a decent amount of time on skin care and beauty TikTok, you’ve probably come across slugging more than once. “Aquaphor slugging,” “eye slugging,” “how to slug your face”—it’s a mysterious corner of skincare, so we asked some experts for the details. And while the skin care technique has been making the rounds on the app as of late, its origins go way back.

From what skin slugging is and the benefits of using this technique to how the method differs according to skin type, there’s a lot to know before you jump into it. If you have been curious about the trend, here’s all you need to know.

What is slugging and how does it work?

Simply put, slugging refers to the process of sealing your skin with an occlusive agent, often petroleum-based (like Vaseline), overnight. Hence the name, which refers to how slimy your face looks afterwards – like a slug crawled over your face and left behind a greasy trail. The idea is to create a protective barrier, which will prevent water loss from your skin during the night and seal in all the hydrating goodness from your sheet masks and rich moisturisers.

If you don’t want to sleep with product on your face, you can also slug during the day and leave the product on for a few hours. Though it’s been popularised as a face treatment on TikTok to aid with hydration, this little beauty trick works on other parts of the body as well – from lips and eye slugging to ankles.

As a trend, slugging’s rising popularity can be traced back to the K-beauty world before hitting forums like Reddit’s Skincare Addiction and later TikTok. But, though it’s been popularised again recently, it is a practice most dermatologists recommend for quickly healing dryness and eczema and trapping in your moisture, according to dermatologist Dr. Shari Marchbein, M.D., who made an entire Instagram Reels on slugging.

What are the benefits of slugging with petroleum jelly (AKA petrolatum)?

Petroleum jelly, the ingredient commonly found in ointments like Aquaphor, CeraVe, Vaseline, and other topical creams, is occlusive, meaning it creates a barrier that seals in hydration. “In truth, dermatologists have been ‘slugging’ for years. We just didn’t come up with a cute name for it,” Dr. Marchbein reveals. “I don’t go to bed without it.”

New York board-certified dermatologist Dr Whitney Bowe, says that slugging can be great for super dry skin and those with eczema. For her, no matter how much moisturiser you put onto chapped skin, it’s that final occlusive layer of petrolatum that really helps to heal the damaged skin barrier and prevent water from seeping out.

Dr. Marchbein recommends using petroleum jelly on its own or thinly layered on top of a moisturiser or hydrating serum anywhere from your knees to your eyelids. She also agrees that the TikTok way of slugging – that is, putting “the teeniest dab,” as she emphasised, over your entire face – can be a great solution for those with dry or sensitive skin. “Especially going into allergy [or cold] season, my lips and my eyelids are the thinnest skin, and they can dry easily. Slugging is a great way of treating that overnight.”

Your Bodywash Is More Important Than You Think—13 We Always Recommend

    [ad_1]

If you have dry skin, you should opt for lower-foam bodywashes that are packed with hydrating ingredients like butters, oils, and ceramides. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you should look for bodywashes that have ingredients like AHAs and other exfoliants to clear pores and deeply cleanse. Sensitive skin should opt for fragrance-free, hydrating formulas. No matter what, it’s best to choose bodywashes that won’t strip skin of its natural oils.

  • These Native American–Owned Beauty Brands Deserve a Spot in Your Routine

These Native American–Owned Beauty Brands Deserve a Spot in Your Routine

    [ad_1]

Let’s be honest: There has historically not been much Indigenous representation in the beauty space (or any space, for that matter). Many brands are inspired by Indigenous rituals but don’t credit the tribes these rituals originated in.

Luckily, many Native American–owned beauty brands are emerging to give people a chance to try products that are rooted in rich cultural traditions. Indigenous tribes often practice holistic lifestyles, and the same goes for beauty products. Many of these brands also put sustainability at the forefront, creating products that are refillable, biodegradable, or locally sourced.

One special thing about Native American–owned brands is that many of them put a huge emphasis on their communities. Whether that looks like donating a portion of their proceeds to Indigenous communities like Prados Beauty or getting their community involved in sourcing ingredients like Niawen, these brands help shine a light on Native American culture and its people.

November is National Native American Heritage Month, and we think it’s important to spotlight Native-owned beauty brands. You may not have heard of many of these brands before, but we encourage you to give them a try—they’re all unique and efficacious in their own right.

Glossier’s Cyber Monday Sale Is My Super Bowl—13 Products I’m Stocking Up On

    [ad_1]

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I am a Glossier girl through and through. Ever since the brand launched in 2014, I’ve been a loyal customer. I used to collect the pink bubblewrap bags, plaster my college water bottle with Glossier stickers, and religiously refill my favorite products. Now that I’m a beauty editor, I’ve mixed other brands into my routine, but I always find myself coming back to Glossier. To me, the brand is perfect for someone who loves makeup but also values products that work to enhance your natural beauty.

Every year, I look forward to Glossier going on sale for Cyber Monday. It’s the best time to shop the already affordable products at steep discounts. This year, Glossier is offering 25% off sitewide, 30% off orders over $100, and a free Glossier candle with purchases over $125 (and trust me, their candles will make your home smell absolutely amazing). • I Bled From Chafing While Marathon Training—This Anti-Chafe Stick Worked Magic

I Bled From Chafing While Marathon Training—This Anti-Chafe Stick Worked Magic

    [ad_1]

When I first decided to run the New York City Marathon, I had no idea what I was in for. I knew that training would entail long, grueling runs and working out most days in between, but I didn’t expect a lot of the challenges that come with it. I’m talking shin splints, trialing a million handheld water bottles, and tons of exhaustion. One thing I really wasn’t expecting? The chafing

I’ve been a runner for a few years now, and I’ve run my fair share of half-marathons. Up until I started training for the full marathon, however, I’d never run more than a half-marathon, so I wasn’t sure how my body would react to longer distances. I’d never experienced much chafing on my runs, but once my milage started going up, I started chafing everywhere. I was getting chafed under my bra line, where my arms rubbed against my shirt, on my collarbones, and more. As the distances got longer, the chafing got worse—to the point where I would bleed. (I’ll save you the photographic evidence, but it was gnarly.)

As you can imagine, I tried everything to stop the chafing. I tried two of the leading anti-chafe sticks, and while they helped a bit, I still had angry welts after every run. In desperation, I was slathering myself in Vaseline—a bit more helpful, but it was staining my running clothes. I was ready to give up and accept that I would probably just have scars on my body from this training time, but then I remembered that one of my favorite sensitive-skin brands, First Aid Beauty, had an anti-chafe stick.

In my largely Gen Z friend group, I’ve settled comfortably into the role of the “soft girl,” which makes sense as I like to describe myself as a Charlotte York sun, Toni Childs moon, and Blair Waldorf rising. If you, like me, have landed yourself on the side of TikTok that’s full of skincare cabinets featuring aesthetically pleasing brands, the Dyson Air Wrap positioned precariously on marble countertops, and half-empty designer perfume bottles, then there’s a good chance the #SoftLife hashtag may have claimed a permanent spot on your For You page.

I Asked Our Editors to Choose Their #1 Tatcha Product—Here Are Their Favorites

    [ad_1]

There are certain brands whose fans are so dedicated and enthusiastic that they reach cult status. Clean skincare brand Tatcha has reached this level (and then some). Inspired and informed by Japanese beauty practices, Tatcha works with scientists in Japan and the U.S. to create gentle, yet effective formulas. Incorporating the trinity of superfoods credited with Japanese longevity—green tea, rice, and algae—Tatcha focuses on clean, minimal formulas that are good for your skin.

Obsessed doesn’t even begin to describe the passion their customers feel about Tatcha’s products. One scan through its website and you’ll discover many of the brand’s best sellers have thousands of glowing reviews. The brand’s less-is-more approach to skincare is one of the reasons Tatcha has developed such a dedicated fanbase, and even our editors aren’t immune to the allure (hey, we’re only human).

Since diving into any new brand can be overwhelming, especially one that has so many hero products, I decided to ask our editors to share their favorite Tatcha products. I also took a scan through their reviews to highlight the top products according to customers and share some of what they’re saying about each one. Below are the best Tatcha products, according to both our editors and reviewers.

2 Beauty Editors Agree: These Drunk Elephant Products Are Skincare Staples

    [ad_1]

Name a skincare brand, and I can guarantee that I’ve tried a few products from their line. It’s my job to try all of the latest and greatest skincare, after all. For most brands, I have one or two mainstays that I love and keep around. It’s rare that I like more than a few skincare products from any given brand, but there are a few notable exceptions.

Drunk Elephant, the endlessly Instagrammable skincare brand focused on biocompatible ingredients, is one of those brands from which I love nearly every product. The brand makes it a point to not focus on whether an ingredient is synthetic or natural, but rather looks at which ingredients will make the highest impact on your skin. The result is skincare that really works, sans ingredients that may cause irritation like essential oils, alcohols, or added fragrances.

My fellow associate beauty editor Shawna Hudson and I both back Drunk Elephant products. After an extremely animated slack conversation, I knew our thoughts were too good not to share—so keep reading to find out which Drunk Elephant products we get truly excited about and why we love them so much.

For most people, November signifies the long-awaited beginning of the holiday season, but for those of us whose careers are based in fashion and beauty, this month happens to be one of our busiest. When we’re not tackling our overflowing email inboxes or deep in a writing hole, we’re taking note of the standout products that have defined our year. This Low-Key Ingredient Might Be Better Than Vitamin C—Here’s What Derms Say

    [ad_1]

But now for the million-dollar question: Is this potent antioxidant better than vitamin C? I asked Camp to weigh in. “Like edelweiss, vitamin C also has antioxidant properties,” he said. “Vitamin C, however, is also known for its ability to brighten skin. Vitamin C can help address sun spots, hyperpigmentation from acne, and uneven skin tone.”

So while both antioxidants offer similar benefits, it depends on what your skincare goals are and your skin type. Vitamin C might be better for those struggling with acne and hyperpigmentation, but edelweiss can offer some serious benefits in the anti-aging department. It’s also suitable for sensitive skin that doesn’t tolerate vitamin C. “Edelweiss is generally well-tolerated and can likely be used by those with sensitive skin,” Camp explained. “However, whenever [you] use a new skincare product, it is a good idea to do a test spot, especially if you have a history of sensitive or eczema-prone skin.”

For a few edelweiss-packed skincare products, take a peek below.

According to an Aesthetician, This Is the Easiest Way to Boost Collagen at Home

    [ad_1]

Although I love a good in-office treatment, I asked Sobelman if she thinks at-home radio frequency devices are worth investing in. “Very much so,” she says. “At-home radio frequency devices can be effective tools for skin firming and collagen stimulation. While they require an intensive initial time investment, after three months, most device results can be maintained with a few treatments a week. While I think the Tripollar, Newa, and Nebulyft devices are all great options, the Newa, created by EndyMed, makers of medical-grade devices, is clinically proven to reduce wrinkles by up to 36%.”

Like Sobelman said, these types of devices are a time and money investment, but they’re a great tool to have in your arsenal if you have some deep-set lines you’d like to see improvement on, and your skin will appear overall healthier over time. Sobelman also has a few tips for anyone just starting their radio frequency journey. “I recommend taking before and after pictures. When it comes to collagen stimulation, patience is key, as it can take up to three months for results to start to develop. As new collagen is produced, it can create subtle shifts in your skin. Having a before picture to refer back to is helpful.”

While there are various forms of RF out there, Sobelman also shares that the best and safest option for at-home use is multipolar radio frequency. While multipolar RF penetrates the skin enough to stimulate collagen, it doesn’t penetrate deep enough to affect the adipose tissue in your face.

For all of Sobelman’s favorite radio frequency skincare device brands, along with a few of our own picks, keep scrolling.

Every Celeb Swears by Augustinus Bader Skincare, But Is It Worth the Splurge?

When it comes to cult skincare, there are few brands more hyped than Augustinus Bader. Despite only launching in 2018 with just two products—the now-iconic The Cream ($290) and The Rich Cream ($290)—Augustinus Bader has amassed an impressively devout following of celebrities, makeup artists and beauty editors who all swear by the glow-boosting, skin-smoothing benefits of this covetable moisturizer. It seems almost every A-lister, from Alexa Chung and Naomi Campbell to Hailey Bieber and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, has a bottle of Augustinus Bader in their skincare rotation—and if they don’t, then their makeup artist does. But at $290 a pop for a bottle of moisturizer, it’s impossible to offer up a truly unbiased review of Augustinus Bader without mentioning the cost. Because, let’s be real, skincare with a three-figure price tag just isn’t a realistic purchase for the vast majority of us.
