  • My Sun Damage Is Out of Control—This $62-and-Under Skincare Brand Works Miracles

My Sun Damage Is Out of Control—This $62-and-Under Skincare Brand Works Miracles

    [ad_1]

I love summer, and I love skincare, but sometimes, those two things seem at odds with each other. I want to be in the sun, but too much sun exposure is bad for my skin. I want to be in the water, but it’s drying. I want to drink one Aperol Spritz after another, but that’s not great for the complexion either. So, what’s a girl to do? Well, it all comes down to balance (and sunscreen)—both of which I’ve focused on heavily for the past few months.

Still, though, it’s nearing the end of summer, and I see so many signs of sun damage in the mirror. I have hyperpigmentation littering my nose and cheeks; I have fine lines deepening around my eyes and forehead; I even have a general dull, lackluster complexion. Gone are the days of bright, even skin, and as a beauty editor, I’m serious about getting it back.

To do so, I’m relying on OAM Skin—a brand founded by Ciara. Now, I know what you’re thinking, and I agree: I have celebrity beauty brand fatigue just like everyone else. But, this brand is different. For one, it was created in collaboration with a team of research scientists, dermatologists, and an MIT engineer. Secondly, they’ve made a visible improvement in the state of my skin. Ahead, shop the products. Plus, see a pretty epic before-and-after photo.

  • 4 Scandi Women Share the Skincare Products That Make Up Their Minimal Routines

4 Scandi Women Share the Skincare Products That Make Up Their Minimal Routines

    [ad_1]

Nnenna Echem is a content creator based in Oslo. She admits she’s more of a maximalist when it comes to skincare, but that doesn’t mean her routine isn’t effectively and consciously curated: “I love doing the most when it comes to my skin, and my seven-step morning routine is something I love doing every day!”

What is your current skincare routine?

For my morning routine, I start off with a double cleanse, first with an oil-based cleanser and then with a gentle cleanser. Then I go over with a toner. After toner, I go on to use a vitamin C serum. The next step in my routine is to moisturize, and I finish off with sunscreen.

My night routine is similar to my morning routine, but I have switched out some products and, of course, added retinol. So I start off with a double cleanse. I then go over my face with toner, exactly as I did in my morning routine. Then I use a pea size of retinol and let it rest for about 10 minutes. Lastly, I use a lip mask and wake up with the softest lips ever!

If you had to name one skincare product you love the most, which one would it be?

I have combination skin and struggle with pigmentation scarring from acne, and I have found that Elixir Niactil 4% is a product I always go back to. It helps with my pigmentation and also hydrates my skin. It’s a product everyone should have.

Are there any habits, routines, or treatments you use and love?

I love dipping my face into ice water. It really helps to tighten my pores and is amazing if you have oily skin. I do this every other day.

How would you sum up the Scandinavian beauty aesthetic/philosophy?

In Scandinavia, I would say that less is more and as few ingredients as possible. … When it comes to Scandinavian beauty and skincare, we believe in “natural” beauty with clean, effective products. We also love to use the nature and ocean in our skincare and wellness routine, e.g. cold plunging and sauna, which is very popular here in Oslo. There are a lot of people who usually cold-plunge and use a sauna before they go to work in the morning.

  • According To Derms, Dry Skin Doesn’t Stand a Chance Against These Moisturizers

According To Derms, Dry Skin Doesn’t Stand a Chance Against These Moisturizers

    [ad_1]

For Dr. Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD, finding the perfect moisturizer match is all about identifying the the ingredients that are most beneficial to your skin. Glycerin or hyaluronic acid, for example draw in moisture while ceramides lock it in. “Some moisturizers may also contain occlusive ingredients like petrolatum, which can be especially helpful for those with dry, flaky skin,” says Garshick. “Other ingredients that can be helpful include emollients to help to soften and smooth the skin like squalane and niacinamide which helps to calm the skin and reduce redness.”

But what about individuals dealing with a compromising skin barrier? Another dermatologist, Mara Weinstein Velez, MD, FAAD, recommends choosing a moisturizer that has ceramids, lipids, and peptides to encourage repair. Alternately, those with acne-prone skin, should opt for oil-free moisturizers using hyaluronic acid and glycerin in their formulas.

Beverly Hills-based board-certified Integrative Aesthetics Doctor, Rahi Sarbaziha, MD, also offered her take on simplifying the decision process based on the specific needs of your skin type. “First, identify if you have dry, oily, sensitive or combination skin. It’s important to note that you still need to moisturize oily skin,” Sarbaziha begins. “Most moisturizers contain three categories of ingredients; humectants, emollients and occlusives. Humectants draw water into the skin, emollients seal the skin’s outer layer and occlusives prevent moisture loss.” She recommends looking for moisturizers crafted from formulas that contain hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and glycerin to provide the skin with its required hydration and protection.

Every Skincare Staple Our Beauty Team Is Using to Transition From Summer to Fall

    [ad_1]

If there’s one thing Who What Wear’s beauty editors can agree on, it’s the importance of adapting our skincare routines to whatever it is our skin demands from us each season, which can be a lot. My skin, for example, falls into an unfortunate cycle of dryness and uneven textures deterred only by heavy hydration efforts. Facing off against dull, lifeless-looking skin is another one of my skin struggles that rears its head by mid-November.

Now that we’ve reached the end of summer and are beginning our transition into all things fall, I thought it would be an ideal time to reflect upon the products my fellow beauty team members and I swear upon to lead the charge into this next season. Interested in learning which ones we’re scrambling to add to our skincare routines? Keep scrolling!

  • Beauty Snobs Think These 6 Products Are Rubbish—I Disagree

Beauty Snobs Think These 6 Products Are Rubbish—I Disagree

    [ad_1]

Perhaps one of my least favorite pieces of skincare advice out there is that we must avoid fragranced products like the plague. Please believe me when I say this is categorically untrue. Not everyone needs to avoid fragrance in their skincare products. If you have extremely reactive skin (for example, in the form of contact dermatitis, eczema, acne, rosacea, etc.), you will probably benefit from cutting out fragrance, as it can further irritation. For most people, however, fragrance in skincare is a perfectly okay thing.

As a beauty editor who has a pretty in-depth knowledge of skin function and skincare formulation, I’m happy to admit that most of my skincare products contain fragrance. Why? Because I like it. My skincare go-to, aesthetician Pamela Marshall of Mortar & Milk, once told me that the best skincare products around are the ones that get used. For me, fragrance adds a sensorial touch to my skincare routine—one that actually makes me want to take my makeup off at the end of the day. If your skin is really aggravated, irritated and angry, lay off the fragrance for a little while. But if not? A little bit of fragrance in your skincare isn’t going to hurt.

I Believe in Simple Skincare—These Essential Items Give Me My Best Skin Ever

    [ad_1]

    Photo:

    Allison McNamara

McNamara mirrors the brand’s simple skincare philosophy in her own “less is more” routine. “You can have incredible skin in three steps or less, which is why at Mara we always say, ‘Cleanse, treat, hydrate.’ It’s really as simple as that,” she says. “Skincare should be intuitive, and your routine should have all the key ingredient pillars that you cycle through depending on the needs of your skin, which change daily based on environment, hormones, and stress levels.”

Since great skin starts on the inside and flows outward, McNamara bolsters her simple skincare routine with a robust wellness routine. “I start off every day by setting the day’s intentions and journaling, followed by a few minutes of morning sunlight to balance my circadian rhythm and my skincare routine,” she says. “I believe that wellness starts within, so a healthy diet, moving my body, and practicing gratitude have transformed my life over the past few years. I do Pilates four times a week along with long walks and hikes. I finish every night off with magnesium supplements, reading, journaling, and some light visualization meditation. Spending time on and with ourselves goes so far beyond skincare. It’s being present in your body with your thoughts and appreciating all that it does for you each day.” Ahead, see 23 beauty and wellness items that make McNamara look and feel her best.

  • WWW Deep Reviews: We Tested the 10 Best Lip Plumpers So You Don’t Have To

WWW Deep Reviews: We Tested the 10 Best Lip Plumpers So You Don’t Have To

    [ad_1]

Each installment of Deep Reviews is weeks—and sometimes months—in the making. Once we land on a subject or category to test, we’ll consult our very own staffers and editors (because we happen to think we have damn fine taste when it comes to all things beauty) to come up with our own “best” list.

The Research: For this Deep Review, we looked to other publications—Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Allure, InStyle, Byrdie—and made a list of the products each site recommended above all others. Next, we cross-examined the results from each publication while profiling every last review and rating across major online beauty retailers to see which formulas showed up the most and seemed to be the most satisfactorily rated among beauty shoppers as well.

The Experts: Since our editors also have access to the best makeup artists in the business, we added an additional expert component to the review process and asked three artists to share the one lip plumper they’d crown the absolute best. They try hundreds of products, so this is a biggie!

In the end, we came up with 10 lip plumpers that beauty lovers, editors, and makeup artists categorize as the best. Of course, we could serve you that top 10 list and end the process there, but we know that still isn’t narrow enough. Instead, we wanted to land on three completely unbeatable formulas you can invest in and love.

The Overall Favorite: We took everything into account—plumping intensity, smell, comfort level, shine, stickiness, longevity, price point, packaging, finish… Literally anything that you can think of, we analyzed it to the nth degree. And since we looked at the full picture, that meant the lip plumper that had the most noticeable results wouldn’t necessarily take the cake if it was sticky, smelled bad, or stung the hell out of our lips.

The Most Extreme Results: We solely based our decision on the noticeable plumping effects, awarding the formula that resulted in the most dramatic volume change in our lips.

The Best Budget Buy: We decided which of the more affordably priced options was a standout lip plumper that still held its own against the more expensive numbers in the bunch.

If you like no-makeup makeup, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: A good skin tint is the most essential product to achieve the “my skin but better” look. When I was researching (read: shopping) skin tints on TikTok, the same one kept popping up: the It’s Like Skin 2-in-1 Concealer + Tint ($28) from Keys Soulcare, a brand created by singer Alicia Keys and dermatologist Renée Snyder, MD. So yeah, this is really the only product to reach for when you have literally five minutes to get ready but still want to nourish your skin and have that gorgeous lit-from-within glow. This Was Marilyn Monroe’s Exact Skincare Routine, and Yes, You Can Still Shop It

    [ad_1]

I’ve seen every single movie Marilyn Monroe ever made at least five times, I’ve read countless books and biographies about the star, and my favorite-ever photo of her (captured by Ray O’Neill in Jasper National Park during the filming of The River of No Return) is the background on my phone. So yes, you could say I have a hearty fascination with the actress. My parents are baby boomers who are now in their mid-70s, so I grew up on black-and-white films, kitschy crooners, and anything else you might associate with ’50s and ’60s pop culture.

I’ve always loved Old Hollywood glamour, in particular, and even as a tiny child, I would pore over the glossy images of iconic screen stars from the golden age, dissecting their nail color, hairstyles, and outfits and desperately researching how they applied their makeup and the specific products they used or were powdered with in a certain movie. No wonder I became a beauty editor, eh? I’ve always loved a great beauty breakdown!

  • Removing Makeup Is the Bane of My Existence—These Under-$20 Options Make It Easy

Removing Makeup Is the Bane of My Existence—These Under-$20 Options Make It Easy

    [ad_1]

First and foremost, you need to know what to look for in a makeup-removing product. Obviously, you want it to work, but you also want it to suit your skin type and your specific skin concerns. Here’s a good rule of thumb to follow: Dry skin? Try an emollient cleansing oil or balm. These can dissolve makeup while giving the skin much-needed moisture. Oily or acne-prone skin? Ditch the oils and balms and reach for a lightweight, oil-free formula instead (such as micellar water). These can whisk away makeup without clogging pores. Normal or combination skin? Try both and choose whichever experience you like better.

Ahead, see the 14 best drugstore options, regardless of type or texture.

  • 3 Things Every Effective Face Serum Needs, According to Derms

3 Things Every Effective Face Serum Needs, According to Derms

    [ad_1]

Since there are so many different variations of serums out there, you might be wondering how to actually shop for one. “Choose your face serum based on the concern that you wish to address,” recommends Imahiyerobo-Ip. “Serums are generally pricier than the average over-the-counter skincare cream. How do you know if the serum is worth purchasing? Look at the ingredient list. The active ingredient should be at the top of the ingredient list. If it’s not, then you’ll know that the serum isn’t going to deliver the results you desire.”

When it comes to choosing an effective face serum, Hartman says to keep three things in mind:

    1. Active Ingredients: “Choose active ingredients that target your skin concerns and dermatologic conditions,” Hartman says. That might mean vitamin C to brighten and even skin tone, or hyaluronic acid for hydration.

    2. Your Skin Type: For oily skin, consider a lighter and more aqueous serum. For dry skin, try an oil serum. “Those with sensitive skin must avoid serums that contain too many acids,” Imahiyerobo-Ip says. “Acids such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, citric acid, or retinoic acid all exfoliate the skin. If your serum contains acids and you have sensitive skin, you may experience skin irritation and redness.”

    3. Consistency of the Serum: Again, go with a lighter formula if you have oily skin and an oil-based formula for drier skin.

  • 3 Estheticians on the Skincare They Wish They Would Have Started In Their 20s

3 Estheticians on the Skincare They Wish They Would Have Started In Their 20s

    [ad_1]

What’s a good, simple skincare routine you’d suggest someone in their 20s follow?

“In the morning, start with a gentle cleanser such as the Cleansing Serum ($38). Next, apply an antioxidant serum such as iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum ($95) to protect the skin as well as offset the effects of oxidative stress, which will brighten the skin and boost the skin’s elasticity. For extra hydration, follow with hyaluronic acid such as Dr. Nigma’s Serum No. 1 ($185), and then eye cream, such as the Intensive Eye Renewal Cream ($68). The most important step of any AM routine is sunscreen. Supergoop Play Everyday SPF 50 ($34) is one of my favorite sunscreens. It’s hydrating yet doesn’t cause congestion and it has an SPF of 50.

At night, cleanse again with the Cleansing Serum to thoroughly cleanse without stripping the skin. This is a great time to add in a treatment serum such as Retinol Reform ($88) for all of the multi-tasking benefits—from the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to uneven texture, dullness, and even loss of firmness. Even if you’re not seeing fine lines and wrinkles in your 20s, it’s still great to add it to give your skin an amazing glow. Follow your treatment product with Dr. Nigma’s Serum No. 1, the Intensive Eye Renewal Cream, and a great moisturizer for your skin type.

    What about in-office treatments?

I recommend getting a facial once a month and maintaining a dedicated skincare routine in-between visits. If you’re not using the right products for your skin consistently, the results of a facial won’t last as long.

Facials are a really integral part of glowing skin. An esthetician will be able to provide a much deeper cleanse than you’re able to do yourself. The perfect facial is one that is non-invasive, yet still very effective, leaving you glowing when you walk out of the treatment room. I love the combination of vibration therapy, a chemical peel, oxygen therapy, microcurrent, cryotherapy, and LED light therapy for a lifted, sculpted, hydrated glow – all great treatments for your 20s and beyond.

Your esthetician will also be able to analyze your skin to determine the perfect routine for your skin, and monthly facials are a great way to see what’s working and what isn’t. Your esthetician can adjust your routine from there, helping you achieve your best skin. The sooner you get a skincare routine established, the better!

Get ready for a behind-the-scenes look at all the can’t-live-without products that make their worlds go ’round.

Finding the right skincare for you can be a process and a journey. When the stars finally align and you do discover your holy grail products, you never want to let them go. That’s what celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau’s products did for me. As someone who struggled with dehydration, barrier damage, and acne simultaneously, I thought I would never find a routine that worked well for me and didn’t dry me out. One day, on a whim when I was writing, I discovered Rouleau’s Rapid Response Detox Cleanser ($43), and never looked back. It’s one of the few great cleansers that works well for acne-prone skin without harsh exfoliants or drying out your skin.

After that, I proceeded to try a handful of other products from Rouleau’s line and now they’re each nonnegotiable items in my skincare routine. This is a testament to the thought and care Rouleau bestows upon her formulas—nothing goes unthought of. In fact, I’ve learned so many great skincare tips from her at this point that if she told me wearing a trash bag for an entire day would transform my skin, I’d 100% believe her. I’m embellishing a bit here for dramatic effect, but seriously, if you follow Rouleau’s advice, you will see amazing results. One of the biggest myths she wants to bust? That you don’t have to cleanse your skin in the morning. “I hear a lot of people say this, but washing your face in the morning is just as important as it is at night,” she says. “The products you use at night can leave traces on the skin, which will make it harder for the products you apply in the morning to soak in fully if not washed off. Your skin also secretes oil overnight, so if you don’t cleanse in the morning, all that sebum is sitting on the skin, creating a barrier and ultimately a dirtier slate!”

The Hottest Trend in Bodycare Is… Bar Soap? 10 Luxe Bars to Try

When I think of bar soaps, my mind immediately jumps to bars of Irish Spring or Ivory—soaps that I might find in a guest bathroom or an Airbnb. Bar soap has always had a place in the bathroom, but I’d be hard-pressed to say it’s chic. That is until the most recent bar soap iterations hit the market.

For the first time in recent memory, bar soap is having, dare I say, a moment. The most high-end brands in the bodycare realm are releasing bar soaps. Not only do you want to use these soaps, but they also feel like a moment of self-care. Many are packed with exfoliators, vitamins, and other good-for-your-skin ingredients. Plus, bar soaps have gone from plain rectangles in unexciting packaging to gorgeously crafted shapes in colors of every kind, housed in luxe, sustainable containers.
