    Treat Type 1 Diabetes with a Plant-Based Diet?  | NutritionFacts.org

    Is it possible to reverse type 1 diabetes if caught early enough?

    The International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention has already had its share of miraculous disease reversals with a plant-based diet. For instance, one patient began following a whole food, plant-based diet after having two heart attacks in two months. Within months, he experienced no more chest pain, controlled his cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugars, and also lost 50 pounds as a nice bonus. Yet, the numbers “do not capture the patient’s transformation from feeling like a ‘dead man walking’ to being in command of his health with a new future and life.” 

    I’ve previously discussed cases of reversing the autoimmune inflammatory disease psoriasis and also talked about lupus nephritis (kidney inflammation). What about type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease we didn’t think we could do anything about? In contrast to type 2 diabetes, which is a lifestyle disease that can be prevented and reversed with a healthy enough diet and lifestyle, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which our body attacks our pancreas, killing off our insulin-producing cells and condemning us to a life of insulin injections—unless, perhaps, it’s caught early enough. If a healthy enough diet is started early enough, might we be able to reverse the course of type 1 diabetes by blunting that autoimmune inflammation?

    As I discuss in my video Type 1 Diabetes Treatment: A Plant-Based Diet, we know that patients with type 1 diabetes “may be able to reduce insulin requirements and achieve better glycemic [blood sugar] control” with healthier diets. For example, children and teens were randomized to a nutritional intervention in which they increased the whole plant food density of their diet—meaning they ate more whole grains, whole fruits, vegetables, legumes (beans, split peas, chickpeas, and lentils), nuts, and seeds. Researchers found that the more whole plant foods, the better the blood sugar control.

    The fact that more whole fruits were associated “with better glycemic [blood sugar] control has important clinical implications for nutrition education” in those with type 1 diabetes. We should be “educating them on the benefits of fruit intake, and allaying erroneous concerns that fruit may adversely affect blood sugar.”

    The case series in the IJDRP, however, went beyond proposing better control of just their high blood sugars, the symptom of diabetes, but better control of the disease itself, suggesting the anti-inflammatory effects of whole healthy plant foods “may slow or prevent further destruction of the beta cells”—the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas—“if dietary intervention is initiated early enough.” Where did this concept come from?

    A young patient. Immediately following diagnosis of type 1 diabetes at age three, a patient began a vegetable-rich diet and, three years later, “has not yet required insulin therapy…and has experienced a steady decline in autoantibody levels,” which are markers of insulin cell destruction. Another child, who also started eating a healthier diet, but not until several months after diagnosis, maintains a low dose of insulin with good control. And, even if their insulin-producing cells have been utterly destroyed, individuals with type 1 diabetes can still enjoy “dramatically reduced insulin requirements,” reduced inflammation, and reduced cardiovascular risk, which is their number one cause of death over the age of 30. People with type 1 diabetes have 11 to 14 times the risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared to the general population, and it’s already the top killer among the public, so it’s closer to 11 to 14 times more important for those with type 1 diabetes to be on the only diet and lifestyle program ever proven to reverse heart disease in the majority of patients—one centered around whole plant foods. The fact it may also help control the disease itself is just sugar-free icing on the cake.

    All this exciting new research was presented in the first issue of The International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention. As a bonus, there’s a companion publication called the Disease Reversal and Prevention Digest.     Eating an Anti-Inflammatory Diet for Lupus  | NutritionFacts.org

    There are dozens and dozens of journals I try to stay on top of every month, and one I always anticipate is The International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, a peer-reviewed medical “journal created to document the science of nutrition and lifestyle to prevent, suspend and reverse disease,” with an editor-in-chief no less prestigious than Dr. Kim Williams, past president of the American College of Cardiology. I was honored to join its editorial advisory board, along with so many of my heroes. The best part? It’s free.     When it comes to chronic lifestyle diseases, wrote Dr. Williams, “Instead of preventing chronic lifestyle diseases, we [doctors] manage. Never cure, just mitigate. Why? Because of finance, culture, habit, and tradition.” There are many of us, though, who “envision a world where trillions of dollars are not spent on medical care that should never have been necessary, but rather on infrastructure, environment, education, and advancing science. For this reason, comes The International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention (IJDRP).” After all, wrote the journal’s co-founder, “Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion.”

    To give you a taste of the journal: How about pitting plants against one of the most inflammatory diseases out there—lupus, an autoimmune disease in which your body can start attacking your DNA? Kidney inflammation is a common consequence, and even with our armamentarium of immunosuppressant drugs and steroids, lupus-induced kidney inflammation can lead to end-stage renal disease, which means dialysis, and even death. That is, unless you pack your diet with some of the most anti-inflammatory foods out there and your kidney function improves so much you no longer need dialysis or a kidney transplant. Another similar case was presented with a resolution in symptoms and normal kidney function, unless the patient deviated from the diet and his symptoms then reappeared.

    As I discuss in my video Anti-Inflammatory Diet for Lupus, even just cutting out animal products can make a difference. Researchers randomized people to remove meat, eggs, and dairy from their diets without significantly increasing fruit and vegetable intake and found that doing just that can lower C-reactive protein levels by nearly a third within eight weeks, as you can see below and at 2:21 in my video. (Our C-reactive protein level is a sensitive indicator of whole-body inflammation.)

    But with lupus, the researchers didn’t mess around. Each day, the study subjects were to eat a pound of leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables like kale, fruits like berries, and lots of chia or flax, and drink a gallon of water. We’re talking about a green smoothie diet to extinguish lupus flares. (Note, though, that if your kidneys are already compromised, this should be done under physician supervision so they can monitor your electrolytes like potassium and make sure you don’t get overloaded with fluid.) Bottom line? With such remarkable improvements due to dietary changes alone, the hope is that researchers will take up the mantle and formally put it to the test. 

    Reversals of autoimmune inflammatory skin disease can be particularly striking visually. A woman with a 35-year history of psoriasis that had been unsuccessfully managed for 19 years with drugs suffered from other autoimmune conditions, including Sjogren’s syndrome. She was put on an extraordinarily healthy diet packed with greens and other vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, avocados, and some whole grains, and boom! Within one year, she went from 40 percent of her entire body surface area inflamed and affected down to 0 percent, completely clear, and, as a bonus, her Sjogren’s symptoms resolved, too, while helping to normalize her weight and cholesterol.     I think I only have one other video on lupus: Fighting Lupus with Turmeric: Good as Gold. It’s not for lack of trying, though. There just hasn’t been much research out there.

    Spotlight on red light therapy: An expert reveals the science behind the hype

    All the colors of the rainbow are beautiful, but red has recently caught the attention of the masses — in particular, red light. Hailed by users for its wide-ranging aesthetic and therapeutic uses, red light therapy (RLT) certainly sounds like a miracle health hack.

    Let’s dig deeper — what is RLT exactly, what are the potential benefits, and how can you get started? To find out, we spoke with Dr. Stefano Sinicropi, a board certified orthopedic surgeon who has done extensive research on red light treatment over the years.

    How NASA pioneered red light therapy

    It’s not surprising that the discovery of this groundbreaking therapy can be linked back to NASA. NASA Spinoff explains that red light therapy was first investigated as a means of growing plants in space and healing wounds of astronauts. The research yielded promising results that are still being explored and refined today.

    Sinicropi explains, “The way that red light therapy works at a cellular level is quite fascinating. The wavelength of the light determines tissue penetration and structures that are affected. Specifically, near-infrared light can penetrate deeply into tissues and have a very strong effect on cellular functioning.”

    Furthermore, “the mitochondria — or powerhouses — of the cell actually absorb the near-infrared light in their cell walls, which triggers a cascade of events ending in the increase in production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the fuel of the cell. By increasing production of ATP, this can improve cellular health and functioning,” he said.

    Red light therapy health benefits

    So, we know that red light therapy can help cells perform their jobs more effectively. What types of jobs might these be? Sinicropi detailed some of the uses and potential benefits, which include:

    • Musculoskeletal pain relief: RLT is FDA-approved for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain

    • Skin health: Many users report significant improvements in skin tone and overall skin health

    • Mental health: Studies have shown promise for the use of trans-cranial red light therapy for conditions such as depression, ADHD, PTSD, and even post-infectious syndromes like COVID-19

    • Cognitive function: Research has indicated improvements in cognitive function and healing in concussion patients

    Many people are also interested in red light therapy for hair loss. A study published in the Annals of Dermatology has produced positive results for this application, and found that red light can stimulate the follicles on the scalp, leading to hair growth and increased strand density.

    Tips for getting started with red light therapy

    At-home red light devices are an investment and many can be on the pricey side. In-depth research should be done on the brand, the scientific foundation behind the products, and user reviews. Common red light devices might include face masks, panels or even mats you can lay on. Popular brands to jump start your search are Joovv, Hooga, Mito, Omnilux and LumeBox, to name a few.

    If you don’t want to make the purchase of your own device just yet, there are more clinics and wellness centers offering RLT everyday. Be sure to talk through all the options with your health care provider before making a decision.

    Sinicropi shared a helpful tip he always gives his patients — be sure to check the irradiance or intensity of the red light produced by the device and compare it to similar brands. It’s also useful to ensure the device emits the most effective wavelengths for the condition you are looking to treat.

    Red light therapy safety precautions

    Sinicropi emphasizes key factors to keep in mind when deciding if RLT is right for you:

    He says that the FDA has deemed red light therapy as having a clinically insignificant risk when using Class I laser therapy, which includes common red light therapy panels and beds. However, risks to be aware of include:

    • Seizure risk: Red light therapy that pulsates at certain frequencies can stimulate seizure activity, so those with a history of seizures should consult their physician before use

    • Skin injury: Higher power lasers, such as Class IV lasers, can cause skin injury or burns if not used in accordance with proper training and physician oversight

    Lumebox also explains the importance of protecting your eyes when using red light therapy devices. Looking directly at the LED lights may cause damage over time, so it’s best to close your eyes or use proper eye protection, like blackout goggles. You can purchase these on your own, but they may be included with an at-home device and at wellness centers that offer RLT.

    Green light therapy on the horizon

    In addition to red light therapy, other wavelengths of light are being tested for their therapeutic benefits.

    Sinicropi says green light wavelengths are best absorbed by red blood cells, potentially facilitating the “release of the body’s own natural endorphins, and the use of green light as an antibacterial and antiviral wavelength.”

    He also says the University of Arizona recently received a large grant to research green light therapy for post-surgical pain, with the hypothesis of significantly reducing the need for opioids.

    Relieve stress

    There’s a reason why so many people find clarity and inspiration by the sea. Morgan adds, “Swimming in the ocean is grounding, as the change of scenery and pace helps us to put ourselves and our experiences into perspective.” The meditative nature of swimming, combined with the sensory stimulation of saltwater and fresh air, creates a peaceful atmosphere found in very few other places in the world.

    Improve skin and respiratory health

    Saltwater is a natural antiseptic, renowned for its ability to cleanse and purify the skin. US Dermatology Partners notes that swimming in the ocean can help exfoliate the skin and reduce inflammation, which can improve side effects of skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Additionally, the Lung Institute highlights that salt particles in the air can have a therapeutic effect on the respiratory system, reducing uncomfortable symptoms like congestion and sinus pressure. Breathing in the fresh, salty air can leave you feeling invigorated, ready to make the most of the rest of the day.

    Boost your immune system

    The ocean is packed to the brim with beneficial minerals and nutrients. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) notes that swimming in saltwater can help replenish essential minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc, which play a vital role in supporting immune function and overall well-being.

    Morgan explains, “Getting sun exposure at the beach or in the ocean increases serotonin levels, triggers the production of vitamin D, regulates circadian rhythms, and reduces stress. All of these play a part in promoting mental health and wellness.” By immersing yourself in the ocean, you’re giving your body a boost that strengthens its defenses.

    Get a full-body, low-impact workout

    Ocean swimming stands out as an excellent form of exercise. The waves, currents and tides make for a constantly changing landscape that requires agility and endurance to navigate. You’ll find yourself engaged in a full-body workout that lights up muscles you never knew you had. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the buoyancy of saltwater takes the pressure off joints and muscles, fully supporting the body. The water offers gentle resistance, making swimming an ideal low-impact workout for anyone, but especially for those who are living with any type of pain or arthritis.

    Practice mindfulness and meditation

    One mindfulness technique that Morgan recommends for the beach is focusing on your senses: “This would include things like listening to the sound of waves crashing, the smell of the air, and the feeling of the sunshine on your skin or sand on your toes.”

    Another technique she suggests is a walking meditation along the ocean, where you pay close attention to the sensation of movement, the rhythm of your breathing, and the things around you. “When practicing a walking meditation at the beach, you may be aware of the feeling of sand on your feet, the sounds of the ocean, and birds chirping,” Morgan says. These mindfulness practices can enhance your beach experience, helping you to relax and reflect more deeply.

    What are the main causes of acne?

  • Menstrual cycle and hormones and influence of oil/sebum production

  • “It is still not fully understood what all the causes of acne are,” says Tule Parks, founder of Skin Diligent, a company she launched after her daughter developed acne and she wanted to understand the causes and treatment better. “However, we do know hormones and the gut microbiome have an important influence on acne. In the case of hormones, we know that too much androgens (the sex hormones) play a role in excess sebum creation, oestrogen and stress hormones like cortisol also play roles. For this reason, it may be simpler to say that deregulation of hormones (in plural) could be one of the causes of acne,” she tells POPSUGAR UK.

    “Conventionally, acne has been considered as a genetic skin condition,” she continues. “But we now know thanks to more and more research, that acne is epigenetics – in other words, the food we eat, the assault of toxins in our bodies, and the stress we don’t manage, all have an effect on the development of acne. We may be predisposed to having acne, but our lifestyle choices have a much bigger role in acne.”

    How Should You Treat Acne?

    “A multi-pronged approach works best when it comes to acne,” says CeraVe dermatologist, Dr Alexis Granite. “Therefore it is important to optimise a patient’s entire skin care regimen, incorporating oil free products that provide hydration whilst not clogging the pores, as many acne medications may be drying.”

    Dr Granite believes supplements can help support the skin and for some patients, dietary modifications, may also play a role in the management of acne, but unfortunately not enough to control the condition on its own. “For mild acne, prescription creams such as retinoids and topical antibiotics are a mainstay of treatment,” she tells POPSUGAR UK. “For more moderate to severe acne, oral antibiotics, hormonal treatment such as oral contraceptives or spironolactone, or isotretinoin may also be used.

    However, according to Parks this isn’t always the best strategy. “The legislation on these medicines changed a few months ago, and now a GP or a dermatologist can no longer prescribe this drug without a seeking secondary medical advice,” she explains. “Finally, the conventional practitioners are getting some sense that the overall health risks may outweigh the benefits of this drug.”

    This is why there has been a big movement within the dermatologist and skin care community to push for a more holistic approach which considers all the different causes, as well as what will work for your skin.     Are there any ingredients you should avoid if you have blemish prone skin?

    According to Dr Granite, during a flare-up and to prevent further blemishes, you should avoid rich essential oils and heavy emollients. “These can exacerbate acne by clogging pores and causing congestion,” she explains. “Over-stripping the skin with harsh cleansers can also worsen spots by disrupting the skin barrier, so it’s important to strike a balance between a thorough cleanse whilst not over-drying.”

    She also recommends avoiding mineral oil, petrolatum, essential oils, cocoa and shea butters for those prone to breakouts so it may be worth checking the back of your labels if you’re going through a particularly bad period with your acne. “It’s important when dealing with acne to strike a delicate balance between efficacy and potential for irritation. Many of the ingredients we use to fight blemishes can be drying including salicylic acid, AHAs, benzoyl peroxide and retinoids. When acne-fighting ingredients are in overly-stripping products or are overused, sensitivity and irritation can then occur, leading to potentially more breakouts and/or product intolerance.”

    Are there any ingredients you should include in your skincare regime?

    “This is a controversial question as the conventional treatments will push for efficiency without any regards to the side effects,” says Parks. “Contrary to what many people say, well balanced oils are friends of acne sufferers with a damaged skin barrier (as a result of the harsh treatments they have been using, not caused by acne). So it is important to use good oils, not avoid all products with oils.” Parks also recommends adding anti inflammatory ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, into your skincare treatments as well introducing certain acids (BHAs like salicylic Acid) and AHAs to help slough off the dead skin cells, azelaic acid, and well balanced non-saturated oils like jojoba, moringa oils, for improving hydration levels.

    One of my fave ways to get more seeds is to make overnight protein oatmeal. I make two batches at once. Here is the recipe:

    Overnight Oats with Protein and Seeds – Makes Two Bowls

    Ingredients:

    • Protein Shake of Choice, halved (I use vanilla flavored)
    • 1/2 Cup Oats for each
    • 1 teaspoon of zero sugar cheesecake pudding mix for each
    • Seeds of choice for each

    Use two small bowls and use divide the protein shake between them. Stir in the rest of the ingredients. Refrigerate until ready to eat.
