    Street closures caused by a sinkhole in the Morena neighborhood were expected to remain in place until Tuesday, according to San Diego officials.

    All southbound lanes on Morena Boulevard were closed between West Morena Boulevard and Linda Vista Road, and one northbound lane remains closed between Linda Vista Road and Cushman Avenue.

    “City crews have completed the repairs to the 8-inch pipe that broke early Thursday morning in the Morena neighborhood. SDG&E and AT&T crews will need additional time to work on their lines in the area,” city officials posted Friday night on X. “Following the completion of SDG&E and AT&T work, the trench will be refilled and the water main can be put back into service. If the repairs are completed as anticipated, the roads will reopen on Tuesday evening.”

    The sinkhole was reported around 11 p.m. Wednesday at Morena Boulevard and Napa Street.

    Impacted utility customers can receive water from water wagons in the 900 block of Morena Boulevard, officials said.

    Motorists were urged to avoid the area.

    Bangkok — A massive sinkhole swallowed part of a major road in Bangkok on Wednesday, disrupting traffic, damaging infrastructure and prompting evacuations in the surrounding area. 

    There were no casualties, but three vehicles were damaged by the collapse, regional Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said, adding that officials believe the sinkhole was caused by construction work at an underground train station.

    Videos of the collapse show a section of the road slowly sinking, pulling down several electricity poles and damaging water pipes. Cars tried to back away as the hole grew larger and completely severed the four-lane road. One edge of the hole stopped in front of a police station, exposing its underground structure.

    People were evacuated from the police station and other buildings. A nearby hospital said it would close the outpatient services for two days, although Bangkok city officials said the hospital’s structure was not affected.

    Officials cut electricity and water in the area as a precaution. Chadchart said crews were working to fix the hole as quickly as possible, fearing heavy rain could cause further damage. Bangkok is experiencing its rainy season, which typically extends from May through October.

    Emergency workers used a crane with a large harness to remove a pickup truck that was left perched precariously on the edge of the precipice, and at least one other truck could be seen inside the roughly 160-foot-deep hole.

    Noppadech Pitpeng, a 27-year-old hospital worker who lives nearby, told the French news agency AFP that he was frightened by a rumbling sound Wednesday morning, which woke him up.

    “The sound was like an electricity pole collapsing and my whole flat shook,” he told AFP as he left his building, carrying some clothes in a bucket.

    A park in Alton, Illinois, was closed after a massive sinkhole swallowed part of its soccer field Wednesday morning. 

    Security footage obtained by CBS affiliate KMOV shows the moment the sinkhole opened up at Gordon Moore Park. It shows a stadium light sinking and plumes of debris billowing into the air. 

    “It was surreal,” Michael Haynes, the director of the city’s parks and recreation department, told the station. “Kind of like a movie where the ground just falls out from underneath you.”

    Footage captured by 618 Drone Service shows the large hole, which is estimated to be at least 30 feet deep and 100 feet wide.

    The collapse is thought to be a result of a working mine, Hayes told KMOV. No injuries were reported.

    “The mines have been here and in this area for decades and decades,” Haynes said. “It’s never been brought up before so I’m told it’s an anomaly. We’ll wait until the investigation is complete.”

    The turf fields where the collapse happened were added to the park in 2019, Haynes told the station, costing over $1 million. He didn’t expect the city to have to pay for repairs. 

    All scheduled events were canceled and Gordon Moore Park was closed “while the sinkhole investigation is being completed,” Alton Parks and Recreation said on social media.

    The New Frontier Materials company told KMOV that the impacted area was secured and will be off-limits while inspectors and experts examine the mine and conduct repairs. 

    The city of Alton, Illinois, is located about 18 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.

    Dunedin Council pays Side-on cafe to end lease in CBD amid fears of sinkhole – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    A popular Dunedin cafe was paid almost $700,000 by the council to close its doors.

    Side-on announced its Moray Pl business was coming to an “abrupt end” after more than a year of negotiations with the Dunedin City Council.

    The council needed the business to close before starting critical repairs to water pipes amid fears of a sinkhole.

    A council spokesman told the Otago Daily Times yesterday it had paid out $695,000 to the cafe’s owners to end its lease.

    The council paid $1.775 million to buy the building last year, for the purposes of connecting pipes between Bath St and Moray Pl.

    Side-on had a lease until 2034, and the council had purchased the remainder of that lease, the council spokesman said.

    “We recognise Side-on is a much-loved cafe, and we worked with the owners on various options for an alternative venue during our negotiations.

    “While the cafe will now close instead, we wish the owners well for any new venture in 2024.

    “This agreement allows for work to proceed as quickly as possible on the replacement of old and failing pipes under Bath St,” the spokesman said.

    The project had been particularly challenging from an engineering perspective, and time had been an important factor, he said.

    It had investigated alternative pipe routes as part of its planning, but “almost all routes” had to pass under private property in Bath St at some stage.

    New England grapples with flooding, possible tornado ahead of Hurricane Lee’s arrival

    The New England area this week has faced torrential rain, flooding, sinkholes and a possible tornado — all as residents prepare for the impending arrival of Hurricane Lee.

    Lee, now a Category 2 storm, continued to creep up along the Northeast coast on Thursday, spawning a hurricane watch from Stonington, Maine to the U.S.-Canadian border. Areas including Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are also under a tropical storm watch while a storm surge warning has been issued for Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket.

    With wind speeds topping 100 mph, Hurricane Lee was churning some 265 miles southwest of Bermuda and about 795 miles south of Nantucket, according to the National Hurricane Center’s most recent update. It noted that “tropical storm conditions” are already impacting Bermuda while “dangerous surf and rip current conditions are affecting much of the east coast and the United States.”

    Though the storm is expected to weaken as it trudges northward, forecasters warned that winds could begin to buffet New England as early as Friday. Lee’s center is expected to pass close to the region’s southeast before ripping across or near Maine, and then moving over Atlantic Canada over the weekend as a “large and dangerous cyclone,” according to the National Hurricane Center.

    Hurricane Lee looks poised to wallop New England later this week even as the region still deals with the impact of days of wild weather that produced torrential rain, flooding, sinkholes and a likely tornado.

    The hurricane’s arrival is only the latest weather woe for New England, where residents for the last two weeks have been drenched with rainfall levels more than 300% above normal, according to weather service data.

    The National Weather Service in Boston said radar data and videos showed an apparent tornado roaring through Rhode Island and Connecticut on Wednesday. Just 24 hours earlier, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey issued a state of emergency following the “catastrophic flash flooding and property damage” across two counties and several nearby communities. It came as certain regions experienced 10 inches of rainfall — unrelated to the hurricane — over the course of just six hours. She added that the state’s emergency management agency is watching the weather as well as the conditions of dams.

    Healey also urged residents to take flood warnings seriously and to stay off the roads when told.

    In Leominster, Mass., the rainfall resulted in several sinkholes, including one at a car dealership that swallowed several vehicles. What’s more, the soggy soil paired with Lee’s raging winds will also increase the likelihood of downed trees, which in turn could knock out essential power lines.

    “The ground is saturated,” Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella said. “It can’t take in anymore.”
