    There’s a big difference between being a singer and being a star performer. Anyone with a little courage can stand on a street corner and sing some tunes, but it takes a special kind of talent to command a stadium full of adoring fans. Last night, Abel Tesfaye, known to the world as The Weeknd, hosted night one of two sold-out concerts inside NRG Stadium. Joining him for these shows were opening acts Playboi Carti and Houston’s very own multi-instrumentalist and producer Mike Dean.

    The show began early around 6:45 p.m. with Dean surrounded by keyboards and synths, standing solo on the massive stage and running through a litany of hits. He dove into the tracks he produced while working for Rap-A-Lot as a producer, mixer, and engineer, creating music for Scarface and The Geto Boys, Devin The Dude, Big Mello, Z-Ro, 5th Ward Boyz, and many more. Dean also played the guitar and even played a few melodies on the tenor saxophone as he ran through songs he created for Kanye West, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Jay Z, Beyonce, and more. It was a perfect homecoming set for Mike, who would later return to the stage to play keys during The Weeknd’s headlining set.

    Rapper Playboi Carti followed Dean, and although he is a strong and energetic performer, the audience seemed to be withholding their applause for The Weeknd. Carti would later accompany the headliner for the songs “Timeless” and “Never Lie,” which were well received by the crowd.

    As the intermission was ending and the stagehands prepped the scene for Abel, the stadium was filled almost to capacity. A massive LED video screen was positioned at the east end zone of the football field, and the set resembled a post apocalyptic scene with a broken skyline. Two long runways crisscrossed the length of the arena floor, and a giant golden figure of a female dancer served as a centerpiece.

    A group of dancers dressed in red robes and face masks made their appearance on stage as the opening notes of “The Abyss” rang out. The Weeknd then appeared in the middle of the group wearing a black robe and a golden mask. The eyes were illuminated with lights, giving him a mystical aura and commanding awe and applause from the crowd. “Wake Me Up” and “After Hours” rounded out the opening trio of tracks.

    The theme of the production was a mix of religion, cult imagery, and a dystopian future. Heavy use of pyro and lasers enhanced the mood, which played with the contrasts of light and dark, fun and fear, angels and demons. The moving images on the large video board showed fantastical visuals of an all seeing eye, souls being lifted around in a circular motion, and many other magical forces.

    Ranging from sad and moody to upbeat and dance-worthy, its easy to see why The Weeknd is one of this generation’s most beloved artists.

    The Weeknd’s voice equally as angelic and mischievous, a natural tenor who flaunts his falsetto as his not-so-secret weapon, mixing tones, tunes, and tempos effortlessly. His set list is at times slow and moody, which then ventures into upbeat and dance-worthy, then crashes into vibrant stories of love, lust, and loss. Its easy to see why he is one of this generations most popular and beloved artists.

    The set list was extensive, with over 40 tracks spanning his 15 year career. The crowd was completely enamored of him, showing love and cheering at every look, gesture, and smile. Once Abel removed his mask, you could see how the love was reciprocated. “I love you, Houston!” he shouted, with tears forming in his eyes. It was a spectacular connection between artist and audience.

    “We are nearing the end of our tour, and usually by this time an artist tends to get lethargic” he confessed to his fans. “But you guys are giving me so much life! I’m never going to skip Houston, ever!” he promised.

    There were many highlights, but my favorite tracks of the night were “Save Your Tears,” “I Feel It Coming” and “Often.” I will definitely be in the building when The Weeknd returns to H-Town.

    Hi Leroy, congrats on the release of ‘NUCLEAR!’ How did it feel to finally let the song out into the world and into your fans’ lives?
    Thank you so much!! It was always so exciting to release new music for the fans and for the world to listen! It was also a bit nerve-racking because you never know how people will react, but I was super proud of ‘NUCLEAR.’ I thought fans would get to see a side of me they hadn’t seen before, and I hoped they were excited too.

    What does ‘NUCLEAR’ mean to you, and is there a certain lyric you’re especially proud of?
    ‘NUCLEAR’ means the beginning of an amazing new journey for me. It’s my first single leading up to my debut album! It’s the result of years of hard work and everything I’ve learned as an artist, producer, and songwriter. I’m super proud of it! One lyric that really stands out for me is, “slow down every inch of time before our love goes nuclear.” I love how it captures the contrast between something as tiny as an inch of a second and the vastness of going nuclear. It really shows how the little things can have a really big impact.

    ‘NUCLEAR’ has been popping off on TikTok, which must be so exciting to see! Do you have any favorite videos or trends you’ve seen fans make using the song?
    I’m absolutely obsessed with all the content people are making to ‘NUCLEAR’ on TikTok! I’ve seen so many cool and different trends, but my absolute favorite has to be when fans dance to the original choreography from the music video. First of all, it’s not an easy dance, but everyone is giving it their all, and the best part is seeing how much FUN everyone is having while doing it. To see the joy in their faces as they recreate those fun dance moves makes me SO HAPPY. It’s very refreshing and healing to have a trend like this right now, especially with all the negativity and division around us. 

    If you could have any artist cover ‘NUCLEAR’ or hop on for a remix, who would you choose and why?
    Oh wow, what an exciting question! What about Khalid? His smooth vocals would sound so sick with this song and also give it a whole new vibe. A lot of people have also been wanting to hear Sia or Chris Brown singing it, and I think that’d be so fun to listen to as well!

    Congrats on the success of ‘NUCLEAR!’ What has it been like for you to see how much fans love the song?
    Thank you! Honestly, it’s been quite surreal to see how much love people have shown NUCLEAR and I’m so grateful. Just last week, I was at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, watching all these amazing artists, and I had this thought; “how wild would it be to hear this crowd sing ‘NUCLEAR?’” Out of curiosity, I checked my TikTok to see how the post with ‘NUCLEAR’ was doing, and just a few hours before, the video had about 17k views. At that moment, it had jumped to 150k! I turned to my friend Ryan, who was totally immersed in watching Gwen Stefani, and I said to him, “Something’s happening…” By the next morning, it was close to a million views! Just imagine a fraction of those people singing ‘NUCLEAR’ together! 

    You recently told The Knockturnal that part of what made ’Nuclear’ so special to you is that it reminded you of the songs you’d hear on the radio while growing up in Spain. How has your upbringing shaped how you approach making music? Have any Spanish artists particularly inspired you for this new chapter?
    Growing up in Spain has completely shaped how I approach music. I’m from a very small town in the Basque Country, with barely 3,300 people. I was a very emotional kid and music became my escape and eventually my passion. I was obsessed with how the songs on the radio made me feel, and I wanted to recreate that. So, when I write music, I always try to capture that sense of escape and make sure the songs hit me emotionally.

    One artist who’s inspired me a lot, not so much in style but in spirit, is Rosalía. I find it amazing how she’s stayed true to herself no matter what’s trending in the industry and still managed to succeed. It’s a reminder that I have my own story to tell and that trusting my instincts is key to doing the music that feels real to me.

    Something that stands out about each song you’ve released so far is how emotive your voice is! Do you have a certain ritual or tradition to get into the right headspace for a song before you record?
    It really depends on the situation when I’m recording. For instance, with ‘NUCLEAR,’ the vocals you hear are the original demo vocals, the very first ones I recorded when writing the songs. A lot of times, the purest emotion comes through right in that moment, and it’s hard to recreate that later. When I do have to re-record, I try to go into the booth without listening to the track beforehand, so I can approach it fresh and be as raw as possible. As soon as I start overthinking it, the emotion gets lost, even if the technical side gets better. To me, it doesn’t matter if a song is technically perfect… If it doesn’t make you feel something, it’s not worth it.

    You got your start in music when you started posting covers on YouTube in 2015 – what’s something you learned during that time that you’ve carried with you while working on your original music?
    The biggest thing I learned is to always keep pushing yourself to improve your craft. When I started, all I had was a crappy little digital camera and a low-lit room to film in. But I’d always try to make each video better with what little I had, which forced me to get creative. That really stuck with me, whether it’s with singing, writing, or just being a better artist, I’m always looking for ways to grow and get more creative.

    In addition to your own music, you notably co-wrote Chanel’s ‘SloMo,’ which became a global hit on Eurovision and went to #1 on Billboard’s Spanish Songs chart! Do you approach working on songs for other artists differently than you approach working on your own songs?
    Yeah, the approach is definitely different. When writing for other artists, you have to step into their shoes and imagine you’re living their life for a moment. It’s kind of like writing a song for someone while looking at them through a tiny peephole—you only see a small part of who they are compared to everything they know about themselves. So you take the little bit you know and shape it into what you think their “artist” persona should sound like. If the artist is in the room, you basically become their therapist for the session, trying to pull out what they’re going through, process it, and then turn it into a song.

    But when I write for myself, I have access to everything in my own mind! Which can be both freeing but also overwhelming because there’s so much to pull from. It’s a much deeper, more personal process.

    What can your fans look forward to in the rest of 2024?
    2024 is just a warm-up for what’s coming in 2025, but before the year’s over, fans can expect to hear some more new stuff, and maybe even get into the holiday spirit with me!

    Is there anything else you’d like to mention or say to your fans that the questions didn’t touch on?

    I watched hours of trending singer-songwriter content on Reels and TikTok and here’s what I found:

    What seems to works best for singer-songwriters in 2024?

    Performance videos!

    But that’s just one of the commonalities I noticed.

    In the post below you’ll see a highlight reel of a dozen videos by singer-songwriters that:

    • Were recommended to me algorithmically
    • Instantly caught my eye
    • Which made me turn up the volume to hear that they…
    • Sounded good

    They all had some impressive engagement happening as well (likes, shares, comments), which served as a kind of social proof enticing me to check out what others had already fallen in love with.

    After watching a bunch of singer-songwriter videos on TikTok and Reels over the course of a couple weeks, I noticed four traits that were worth pointing out. If you’re about to shoot a performance video, maybe some of these can serve as inspiration:

    Walking around while performing

    There’s lots of playing and singing while walking. I guess we like walking now.

    The walking provides a sense of energy, journeying, or travel. Which pushes and pulls the camera along with the subject.

    Plus, walking outside can result in some interesting backgrounds.

    A quick zoom or dramatic camera motion

    The common advice used to be something like “grab attention within the first three seconds.”

    But now it’s best to capture the eye within the first few frames. This leads us instantly into the action.

    And one of the most obvious ways to instantly grab the eye is to begin with camera motion, zoom, panning, or rotation right from the first frame.

    A static camera with a great performance

    A lot of trending videos I saw had no camera motion at all. Stationary. Simple!

    So this one isn’t really a “trend.” Propping your phone on a bedroom bureau or placing it on a tripod is nothing new.

    But I’m including it here as encouragement that you still CAN get away with the easiest approach as long as the music is good.

    The most important commonality?

    As a general rule, quality performance videos seem to outperform POVs, confessionals, tutorials, and skits when it comes to music content. But almost all the viral music videos on my feed had something else in common:

    One camera, one take. No cuts, no edits.

    This gives the impression that what we’re seeing is real, risky, and vulnerable. None of the painstaking editing after the fact to craft a moment. Instead, you’re IN the moment.

    Now, of course that doesn’t mean these were impromptu videos. A lot of attention was paid to the scene, the framing, the outfits, the color palette.

    And the sound. In fact, several of these videos had pre-recorded sound and then they worked hard to make a convincing lip-sync that looks truly live.

    How do you feel about that last part? Is it cheating? Or does it make it easier to produce content when you can worry about the sound and visuals separately?

    Eric Church was the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year in 2020. He’s won the CMA Album of the Year Award twice. Church has five Platinum albums to his name, multiple others Gold, hit singles for days. His live shows are the stuff of legend – 3-hour marathons that play like sprints.

    Church is even headlining the final day of Rodeo Houston on Sunday, a designation previously reserved for the likes of country icons like Garth Brooks and George Strait.

    So, yeah, Eric Church is a really big deal, one of the greatest musicians (country or no) of his era. Then why does it not feel that way?

    When talk turns to the greatest country artists of the modern era, names like the aforementioned Strait and Brooks come to mind, as do greats like Alan Jackson, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire and Tim McGraw.

    When talk turns to the most noteworthy and commercially successful country acts of the 21st Century, Jason Aldean certainly gets his due. As does Luke Bryan. Same for Zac Brown Band.

    The hottest country acts in the game today? Morgan Wallen. Luke Combs. Zach Bryan. Chris Stapleton.
    Each of the artists above certainly belongs on their respective lists, but when talk comes to each, why doesn’t Church’s name jump to the forefront?

    He’s been a commercial force for the better part of 20 years and is universally respected by country diehards and casuals alike, not to mention the envy of many of his contemporaries. He can craft a radio hit, turn out more rock-like fare in droves and do poignant with the best of them.

    He can do it all. And maybe that’s the problem.

    George Strait produced harmonious, radio-friendly hits for decades. Garth Brooks was a country supernova who crossed over into pop before it was a thing. Shania Twain followed his lead. Luke Bryan sings often of tailgates and tanlines, Aldean of other varieties of country staples. Wallen creates music with enough edge to be cool and enough melody to make him the biggest name in country today.

    Church? Yeah, good luck putting him in a box.
    The guy rocks – see “That’s Damn Rock & Roll” and “Heart on Fire” as recent examples. He makes hits that tell stories and have heart, most notably, “Springsteen” and “Talladega.” He can be just plain fun (“Cold One,” “Drink in My Hand”).

    Oh yeah, he also released what some consider the greatest country album of the 2010s, Mr. Misunderstood,” a stripped-down ode to country music that features some of his best material, in particular, “Record Year,” “Holdin’ My Own” and “Round Here Buzz.”

    Point being, Church may never top any number of lists that designate the best, brightest or most notable artists in country today. Perhaps that’s by design. After all, why do any one thing well when you can excel across the board?

    Underrated though he may be, country music is infinitely better with Church in its ranks. On Sunday, Rodeo Houston fans are going to find out firsthand.

But also…some small part of you wants to let him make you a better person??? A very small part. Mostly, you just want to ruin his life.

This is the kind of guy you want to spend 72 hours in bed with every 4-6 months but otherwise never see. This is the kind of guy you agree to go camping with despite hating the outdoors because you just love watching him pitch a tent (yes, that was a double entendre, you filthy minx).

    “Got Your Teenage Sister Pregnant, but You Kind of Get It” Hot

    Okay, not literally!!! (maybe literally). But you know that kind of smarmy guy who works at the gas station and says borderline-inappropriate things to you every time you see him? But for some reason, you just can’t summon feminist rage about it and instead sorta giggle and blush and wonder what his tobacco-stained fingers would feel like pulling your hair? Yeah, that guy. He’s a good-for-nothing, uneducated, creepy, grungy, loser…and that kind of works for you.

    “You Knew He Would Be Weird in Bed” Hot

    So he’s super hot in all the traditional ways, from facial structure to swagger, but there’s also something a little…extra. Something about him that’s…unhinged. Some kind of mad twinkle in his eye that speaks of unexplored multitudes. In most cases, those multitudes are just daddy issues and a preference for foot stuff, but the joy is in the journey of finding out.

    “Burnout” Hot

    Example: Jeremy Allen White

    He’s not a bad-looking guy. Just a little limp-looking, with features that start seeming weird if you stare too long. But there’s something about him. The tattoos? The nicotine addiction? The greasy hair? Somehow, it’s working.

    This is a broad but important category that this reputable publication has dwelled on seriously for quite some time. An ugly hot guy has an appearance that falls outside the boundaries of conventional attractiveness. Maybe he has a weird horse face or limbs that flail like a carwash’s inflatable man in heavy wind (think Pete Davidson). But if you take all of his objectively unattractive features and put them together, somehow, it just works.

    This is better than just being rich—it’s looking rich. This is ascot hot. This guy’s actual God-given looks are largely irrelevant because money made him his own God. He has the money and time to ensure his hair, skin, and clothes are flawless in a “Who me? I just rolled out of bed like this…” kind of way. If this is your type, it’s fine, we get it.

    “Ready To Risk It All” Hot

    This is the kind of hot you leave your husband for. This is the kind of hot you leave your wife for. This is the kind of hot you sell your house for. This is the kind of hot you pretend to like his DJ set for. Is the sex good? It literally doesn’t matter, just look at him.

    Does he have a substance abuse problem? Probably. Is he reliable? Not at all. Do any of his values align with yours? Absolutely not. Is he a great f**king time? Oh yeah.     This is a complicated category. He makes your uterus ache, but you can’t tell if that’s sexual arousal or your biological clock ticking. You can’t decide if you want to take a bath with him or give him a bath. Either way, you definitely wanna smooch that sweet lil face.

    “Retro” Hot

    Example: Aaron Taylor Johnson

    Something about him screams “traditional values.” Not in a scary, baby-Don’t Worry Darling way. More in a Ready For Marriage kind of way. And honestly … if he wanted a trad-wife, I’d be a trad-wife.

    “Artist/Vegan” Hot

    Example: Jaden Smith

    He is comfortable with his feminine side, and he wants you to know it. You wanna argue with him about the fallacy of placing the responsibility for climate change on the shoulders of individuals when a handful of corporations are ultimately responsible—but he has those puppy dog eyes, so you just give in and agree to give up plastic straws. His slam poetry competitions are cringe-worthy, but he just looks so good in ripped Levi’s and a beanie.

    “Wouldn’t Be Surprised if He Turned Out to Be a Serial Killer” Hot

    Example: Robert Pattinson

    He speaks, acts, and behaves like a robot who has heard about the behavior of human beings but never actually seen it. There’s something magnetic about his strangeness, and suddenly the legacy of Ted Bundy makes sense to you. Everything about him is subtly unsettling, but personality disorders aside….he could get it.

    “Prettier Than You” Hot

    Example: Josh Heuston

    He paints his nails, has a skincare routine, and posts thirst traps on Instagram. He doesn’t have a job, but he has thousands of followers on TikTok so he’s working on monetizing social media. Which makes all his hair products a business expense, I guess? Whatever, it’s worth it when he takes his shirt off.

    “Stoner” Hot

    Example: Donald Glover

    He only chuckles at your jokes but cries laughing when his gamer buddy says something about farts. He always needs a haircut, has stains on his shirt, and probably smells faintly of Doritos. Still, something about his anti-establishment, “being handsome is mainstream” attitude does it for you.

    “Garbage” Hot

    Example: Jack Harlow

    This one comes with a lot of justified self-loathing. Just do better.

    Canadian singer-songwriter Shirley Eikhard, whose flirty track “Something to Talk About” gave Bonnie Raitt her biggest hit and a Grammy Award win, has died after a battle with cancer.

    Longtime friend Deborah Duggan says the musician died early Thursday at a hospital in Orangeville, Ont. surrounded by those closest to her. She was 67 years old.

    Eikhard, born in Sackville, N.B., got her first taste of success in her early teens when Anne Murray recorded her 1971 track “It Takes Time,” making it a Canadian chart hit.

    A year later, Eikhard’s self-titled debut album, released when she was only 16, gave her another boost. She went on to win Juno Awards for female country artist in 1973 and 1974.

    Eikhard released several albums in the years that followed, but Raitt’s “Something to Talk About” offered an unexpected twist.

    Originally intended for Murray, the East Coast singer’s producers vetoed the track in the mid-1980s, saying it wasn’t hit-worthy.

    Several years later, it landed in the hands of Raitt, who recorded it for her 1991 album “Luck of the Draw.”

    “Something to Talk About” peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year and won Raitt a Grammy for best pop vocal performance for a female artist.
