    After a police van carrying Aaftab Poonawala was attacked on Monday, security has been beefed up outside the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Delhi’s Rohini area. Moreover, a paramilitary force has also been deployed outside the laboratory.

    Poonawala reached the laboratory for the remaining session of the polygraph test on Tuesday.

    Poonawala, accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar, was attacked outside FSL where he was taken for a polygraph test on Monday. The van was attacked by a group of men outside the FSL on Monday evening. They were seen carrying swords in their hands and chasing the vehicle. The policemen stationed at the spot had to fire in the air to push away the men as they gathered near the vehicle.

    Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) G S Sidhu said, “Two persons have been detained for questioning.” The two detained have been identified as Kuldeep and Nigam, police said. A case has been registered at the Prashant Vihar Police Station in connection with the incident, police said, adding that the two detained have been sent to judicial custody.

    Poonawala, who met Shraddha Walkar on dating site and moved in together to a rented accommodation later, allegedly strangled and cut her body into 35 pieces. He stored her body parts in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in Mehrauli in South Delhi, before dumping them across the city over several days.

    He was arrested on November 12 and sent to five-day police custody, which was further extended by five days on November 17.

    On November 22, Poonawala was sent to police custody for four days. The court on November 26, sent him to judicial custody for 13 days.

    The remaining sessions of the polygraph test on Aaftab Ameen Poonawala, accused of brutally killing his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar, was conducted on Monday. The polygraph test was conducted at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Rohini.

    According to Sanjeev Gupta, head of the department of crime scene management at FSL, there was a health issue when the last session was held, due to which some sessions were not satisfactory. “Whether Aftab is cooperating during the test or not, we will tell the investigating agency as this is a confidential matter,” he added. Reportedly, Poonawala reached the FSL at 9:50 am and the sessions began at about 11 am.

    It is also to be noted that Poonawala underwent a marathon polygraph test on Friday which lasted for nearly three hours.

    Poonawala, who was sent to Tihar Jail, is being monitored round the clock behind the bars, as per Tihar Jail’s public relations officer (PRO) Dheeraj Mathur. Furthermore, sources said that he is currently lodged in cell number 4, which is a separate cell.

    They added that food would be served to Aaftab only in the presence of police personnel. Moreover, a security guard is to be stationed outside his cell.

    On November 22, the court sent Poonawala to judicial custody for 13 days. According to Mathur, the jail superintendent received an order from the court that Poonawala should be presented before the director of the Forensic Science Laboratory in Rohini on November 28, 29 and December 5.

    Aaftab Ameen Poonawala and Shraddha Walkar case

    Aaftab Ameen Poonawala and Shraddha Walkar met on a dating site and moved in together to a rented accommodation in Chhatarpur as the relationship grew. On receipt of the complaint from Shraddha’s father, Delhi Police registered an FIR on November 10.

    Poonawala confessed to the Delhi Police that he killed his partner Shraddha Walkar in May and chopped her body into 35 pieces. He said that he stored Shraddha’s body parts in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence.

    Aaftab Ameen Poonawala, the prime accused in the Shraddha Walkar murder case, on Friday, underwent a marathon polygraph test for another day. But cops said that the test could not be completed. This comes as Aaftab’s police custody has also ended on Friday even as the investigation in the case is on.

    According to the officials, the polygraph test, which lasted for nearly three hours at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), couldn’t be completed on Friday as Aaftab was unwell. Aaftab had undergone a marathon polygraph test of nearly eight hours on Thursday.

    Sagar Preet Hooda, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Zone II, said, “Polygraph test of the accused Aaftab in Mehrauli police station case FIR No 659/22 under section 365/302/201 IPC could not be held today.”

    They further added that he will undergo a medical examination today. However, officials at the facility also revealed that they found it difficult to record his statements as he was not well. A team of FSL officers is likely to hand over the report to Delhi Police in a day or two.

    According to the experts, Aaftab had co-operated with the investigators to some extent but remained largely evasive. He may undergo a narco analysis test if reports reek of discrepancies. A senior FSL official said all sessions related to the test have been completed, including the pre, main and post-stages of the procedure.

    The official said “Our forensic experts will analyse the recordings and make a report accordingly. He (Aaftab) can be called again if the experts are not satisfied with the report. Based on the outcome of the report, a decision will be taken on conducting narco analysis which can be carried out even if he is sent to judicial custody.”

    A series of questions related to the Shraddha Walkar murder case were asked in the polygraph test. Some of the questions asked in the test were the sequences of events that led to the murder, the accused’s relationship with Walkar, reason for their strained relationship, place where he dumped the body parts, type of weapon used, among others.

    As per the official, these questions were intended to check for discrepancies in his statement. He further added that the results will be handed over to the investigators within two-three days.

    Aaftab had allegedly strangled his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and cut her body into 35 pieces, before dumping them across the national capital and surrounding areas. Reportedly, he kept it in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in south Delhi’s Mehrauli before dumping those over several days past midnight.

    The cops are yet to find the victim’s skull and remaining body parts as well as the weapon used to dismember the body.

    Shraddha murder case: As grim details keep emerging in the Mehrauli murder case, a letter by the victim, Shraddha Walkar, which she wrote to the Tulinj police station in Mumbai on November 23, 2020, has resurfaced. She stated in this letter that Aftab Poonawala used to scare her and blackmail her. He had also threatened her that he would kill her, cut her body in pieces and throw it away. 

    She stated in the letter that he has been hitting her since as long as six months but she does not have the courage to approach the police. The letter accessed by the news agency ANI further mentioned that Poonawala’s parents were aware of the physical abuse and the fact that he tried to kill Walkar. 

    She said, “I lived with him till date as we were supposed to get married anytime soon and had the blessings of his family. Henceforth, I am not willing to live with him so any kind of physical damage should be considered coming from him as he has been blackmailing me to kill me or hurt me whenever he sees me anywhere.”

    Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that there would be an investigation into why the Maharashtra police took no action on Shraddha’s letter in 2020. He added maybe Walkar’s life could have been saved if authorities took action in a timebound manner. 

    DCP Suhas Bavache of the Mira Bhayandar- Vasai Virar (MBVV) Commissionerate said that Shraddha stated in her written statement that the issues between herself and Poonawala were resolved. 

    Bavache mentioned, “Whatever necessary action had to be taken in that matter was done by the police at that time. The application that was given by the complainant was also investigated. After the investigation, the complainant herself gave a written statement that there is no dispute. Her friend’s parents also cajoled her to resolve the dispute. She gave the written statement and after that the case was closed.”

    Aaftab has been accused of strangling and killing Shraddha Walkar on May 18 this year. He also put the chopped body parts in a 300-litre fridge before disposing of them. Both of them met on a dating app and moved into rented accommodation in Chhatarpur.

    Accused in the brutal Shraddha Walkar murder case Aaftab Poonawalla moved belongings in 37 boxes from his flat at White Halls Society in Evershine City in Vasai district to his residence in Delhi’s Chhatarpur area and paid Rs 20,000 for it, according to a Delhi Police official. Poonawalla told Delhi Police that he and Walkar fought about who would pay for shifting the items from their house in Palghar. 

    The officials are yet to trace the details of the account used to pay Rs 20,000 for transporting furniture and other household items through Goodluck Packers and Movers company in June. This matter came to light when a Delhi Police team recorded the statement of an employee of the packaging company in the Palghar district. 

    Delhi Police also recorded the statement of the owner of the house where Walkar and Poonawalla stayed in 2021 and the owner of the flat in Mumbai’s Mira Road area where the accused’s family was staying. Officials have also recorded the statements of four people in Palghar including two men who helped Walkar after Poonawalla assaulted her in 2020, news agency PTI reported. 

    Abdullah Khan, the secretary of the Unique Park Housing Society, where the accused Aaftab Amin Poonawalla lived with his family, told the police in his statement that Aaftab’s family vacated the house around 20 days ago and the place has been rented out. 

    The accused lived with Shraddha in three apartments including Kenny Apartment, Regal Apartment, and White Hills Apartment across Mumbai. Delhi Police will also question the staff of the five-star hotel where Poonawalla worked as a trainee chef. While two officers will question the staff about Aaftab, one officer will carry on the probe in Palghar. 

    The case came to light when Shraddha’s father Vikas Walkar filed a complaint with the Delhi Police on November 10. During the interrogation, it was revealed that Aaftab killed Shraddha on May 18 and later chopped her body into 35 pieces and put them in a fridge before dumping them in the Mehrauli forest area.

    In a major development in the Shraddha Walkar murder case, Delhi Police in its latest claim has said that the sleuths have got hold of a CCTV footage of October 18 in which Aaftab Ameen Poonawala can be seen carrying a bag, which they suspect had Shraddha’s mortal remains. 
    Cops have told India Today TV that perhaps Aaftab was going to dump some of the cut body parts, which were stored in the refrigerator, in the nearby Mehrauli jungle.  
    Shraddha Walkar, 26, was allegedly strangled and then chopped into 35 pieces by her boyfriend and partner Aaftab in the month of May. Delhi Police have been conducting several search operations in the Mehrauli forest area to look for key evidence in the case.
    In the new surfaced CCTV footage, Aaftab can be seen making three rounds, and police suspect that he might have gone out with the bag to dispose of the body parts.

    On Saturday, Delhi police also recovered heavy and sharp cutting tools from Aaftab’s flat, which they suspect might have been used for the crime. Investigating officers have said that Aaftab himself told the police where the weapon was kept and helped them recover the vital evidence from his Chhatarpur flat. Recovery of the weapon will be crucial in further investigation of the case.
    On Friday, a Delhi Police team visited the office of a private firm in Gurugram where Aaftab used to work. After carrying out a search, the police officers were seen carrying black-coloured plastic bags with some items or suspected evidence they found in the backyard of the office.
    Aaftab has told the police that he disposed of Shraddha’s bloodstained clothes in the civic garbage van after dismembering her body.
    Several body parts have been found in the forests in Mehrauli in the last few days. Cops said that they are looking for her severed head. The police have recovered ten bags of body parts so far.
    The Delhi Police have also sent teams to Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to look for possible evidence in the murder case. Cops said Aaftab and Shraddha went on several trips and they are trying to look into minute clues or pieces of evidence there.

    Aaftab Poonawala, who has been accused of killing his live-in partner, Shraddha Walkar, used to consume drugs and sell drugs in the middle of the night, claimed the victim’s friend. Shraddha’s friend Godwin said that she never liked the fact that he used to supply drugs in the middle of the night. 

    Poonawala used to consume and sell drugs. He used to make brownies, keep them in the fridge and sell them at night, claimed the friend. 

    Shraddha’s friend said that he had initially promised to marry her, but she came to know about his drug influence later on. He also told India Today in an interview that Aaftab’s parents told her that if she married him, he would become a ‘better person’. 

    Aaftab assaulted Shraddha in 2020. She went to the police station with a blood clot on her face and strangulation marks on her neck, he claimed. Her friend claimed that it was not the first but the 14th or the 15th such incident. 

    She wanted to leave him, said the friend, but was waiting to garner some support. She tried to reach out in 2020 after the assault, said the friend. 

    Godwin said that Shraddha used to love travelling alone. She wanted to go on a solo trip to Nepal. But Aaftab did not like this, since he was very possessive, said the friend. The friend said that Aaftab did not even like her talking to him. 

    Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Thursday extended the police custody of Poonawala for five more days. The court also allowed Delhi Police to put Poonawala through a narco test. Aaftab was asked by the judge whether he is aware of the consequences of narco test to which he gave his consent.

    A large group of lawyers were seen shouting slogans outside the courtroom in the national capital New Delhi. They were demanding the death penalty for Aftab Poonawala, the accused in the macabre killing of his girlfriend Shraddha Walkar.

    Poonawala was produced before a local court via video conference at around 4 pm today for a custody hearing. According to news reports, Police feared he would be attacked, which is why the court had permitted using a video link from the jail.

    The large group of lawyers, who were expecting Poonawala would be brought in, began shouting slogans like “hang him, hang him.” The lawyers’ made this protest after the case reignited debates on “love jihad”, which accuses Muslim men of luring Hindu women to convert them to Islam.

    Reportedly, cops had asked the court for seven more days of Poonawala’s custody. They have been interrogating him for five days so far and wanted to extend Poonawala’s custody to gather more material evidence.

    Police have recovered 13 body parts, believed to be of the woman, from different areas which will be sent for DNA analysis. The investigating team is also likely to approach the dating app Bumble through which the duo met.

    28-year-old Poonawala had allegedly strangled Walkar in May and chopped her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in South Delhi’s Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days past midnight.

    The crime was uncovered after Vikas Walkar, Shraddha’s father, who had not been in touch with her for over a year, went to the cops around a month ago. Vikas was allegedly opposing the inter-faith relationship between Shraddha and Aftab.

    According to the police, his confession led them to the details, and evidence to corroborate the criminal trial is being collected. However, legal experts point out that a confession in police custody isn’t valid evidence unless made in front of a judicial officer.

    Moreover, cops have also sought permission for a lie-detector test on Aftab, who after being asked by the judge whether he is aware of the consequences of Narco, said yes and gave consent.

    Meanwhile, the Mira-Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) police are clueless about the current location of the family members of Poonawala who had vacated their flat in a housing society in Vasai a fortnight ago and are believed to have shifted to the Mira Road area.

    The Delhi Police have found substantial evidence– physical and digital– in the horrid Shraddha Walkar case so far. The accused in the case, Aaftab Amin Poonawalla, tried to put the murder of Shraddha under wraps by removing physical evidence. However, he left digital evidence which led the police to trace this case. 

    The biggest clincher in the case so far is the bank statement of the couple’s account which indicated a transaction worth Rs 54,000 from Shraddha’s net banking app to Aaftab’s account dated May 26. The location where the transaction took place was incidentally the Mehrauli police station area. 

    This busted Aaftab’s claim that Shraddha was not contactable after May 22 and that he had no contact with her. The police further found a chat from Shraddha’s Instagram account dated May 31, which also traced back to the Mehrauli police station area. 

    He told the Delhi Police that he kept posting on Walkar’s Instagram profile after the murder took place to avert any suspicion or questions about her whereabouts. Going by Aaftab’s confession, he murdered Shraddha on May 18, allegedly impersonated her on Instagram, and was active on her account till June 9. Apart from this, Poonawalla also searched Google to find ways to dispose of the dead body in a non-suspicious manner and the exact type of chopper he would have to use to dismember the body. 

    The police have written to the online dating app Bumble and sought details of his profile and the women who visited his place after the murder. Officials suspect that Poonawalla’s match from the dating app could be his motivation behind Walkar’s murder. Bumble has said that it will cooperate with the authorities in the case. 

    Bumble said, “We will continue to follow closely and remain available to law enforcement should they request our support. The safety and wellbeing of our members is our top priority and we have a dedicated global team serving their needs.”

    Delhi live-in partner murder case: Physical evidence so far 

    Apart from this, the statements of the late Shraddha Walkar’s father Vikas Walkar, Aaftab and Shraddha’s neighbours, and Shraddha’s friends also have been recorded. Her father has accused Aaftab of beating Shraddha regularly when she was with him in one of his statements to police. 

    Walkar demanded the death penalty for the accused and did not rule out the much-talked-about ‘love jihad’ angle in the case. He told the news agency ANI, “I suspect love jihad. We demand that Aaftab be sentenced to death. I have faith in the Delhi Police as the investigation is moving in the right direction. Shraddha was close to her uncle and didn’t talk to me much. I was never in touch with Aaftab. I lodged the first complaint in the case at Vasai (Mumbai).”

    He added that he did not know that his daughter shifted to Delhi and that her friend told him about the same. Walkar also mentioned that he thought she was in Bengaluru and Aaftab had ample time on his hands to remove the evidence. 

    Besides this, the police also recorded the statement of Dr. Anil Singh who treated Aaftab after he got injured while chopping Shraddha’s body into pieces.  He said that he was restless and aggressive while talking and left when questioned about how he got injured. 

    The investigating team has found the bill of the fridge allegedly used by Aaftab Poonawalla to store his girlfriend’s dismembered body, the bill of a small saw used to chop her body into 35 pieces, and statements of the retailer, who successfully identified Poonawalla. 

    They have found around 13 bones from the Mehrauli forest area, all of which have been sent for forensic testing to ascertain whether they belong to Shraddha. Recovering the bones is extremely crucial as it can tell the time and cause of the death. 

    Delhi murder case: The Road to Justice

    While the police have made substantial headway in the case, the road to justice is still far as there is much more evidence to be unearthed to make this a watertight case. This includes a murder weapon, Shraddha’s clothes at the time of the murder, the victim’s mobile phone, scientific evidence to indicate body parts were stored in the fridge, missing body parts, evidence to back the time of the incident, and the lack of witnesses when it comes to the fight between Shraddha and Aaftab.
