The Rise of the Dark Shower—& How to Perfect It

If you’re chronically online, you’ve probably heard of “dark showers”. If not, they’re exactly what they sound like: showering with the overhead lights off or dimmed. Using just one soft, moody light source has drawn considerable talk online as a way to boost mood and lower stress while showering—the perfect ending to a long day.

It sounds pretty straightforward, but what do experts think of the trend? “If a dark shower helps someone relax and reduce stress levels, that can support healthier skin over time. This may translate to fewer stress-related flares, improved barrier function, and better overall skin resilience,” explains New York-based dermatologist Dr. Brianna Olamiju, MD. “While the lighting itself isn’t therapeutic, the stress reduction component absolutely matters in dermatology.” She notes that stress is a well-established trigger for many skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and chronic hives. “Elevated stress increases cortisol and inflammatory signaling in the body, which can worsen breakouts, delay barrier repair, and provoke flares,” she adds.

But while the time in the tub can be calming to the nervous system, dermatologists do make a subtle warning to showerers.

“In very low light or darkness, people may be more likely to miss areas when cleansing (such as the back, underarms, or behind the ears) or to exfoliate unevenly or too aggressively without visual cues. This can be relevant for individuals with acne-prone skin, folliculitis, or conditions like keratosis pilaris,” says Dr. Olamiju. She also notes that dim showers may make noticing skin changes, like new rashes or signs of infection, a bit harder (and thus may make these discoveries easier to overlook until symptoms worsen).

“I generally advise patients that if they enjoy dark showers for relaxation, they should balance that with practical skin care habits: avoid overly hot water, keep showers short, cleanse gently, moisturize immediately afterward, and do periodic full-body skin checks in good lighting,” says Dr. Olamiju. In other words, think of dark showers as a wellness ritual—not a replacement for attentive skin care.

Crème de la Mer Wishes It Could Be as Good as This $18 Barrier Face Cream

Bringing the jar with me to Big Bear Lake—a popular mountain getaway about three hours east of Los Angeles—this past weekend, I used the barrier cream every single night. It was the perfect occasion to really put the formula to the test, because my skin was not only reacting to the arid, 35-degree climate, but I was also battling some fun, PMS-related breakouts. Could this face cream solve all of my woes?

An Honest Review of Bubble’s Soft Swerve Barrier Repair Balm

The answer is yes. After washing my face at night, I twisted the applicator, which “sliced” off slivers of moisturizer like ribbons (very satisfying) and applied generous amounts all over. Similarly to La Mer (or Avène’s Cicalfate+), you have to really massage the product into your skin (or pre-warm it up with the warmth of your fingers), otherwise you’ll be left with a white cast. The cream (rather, balm—she’s thiccccck) gave me immediate relief, making my skin feel supple and nourished. The real results were apparent the next morning though: My complexion appeared less red and more even, and my skin felt bouncier.

After five days of using Soft Swerve consistently, my skin felt smoother and softer, the redness was gone, and my blemishes were slowly starting to fade away (this could also be explained by the arrival of my period—womp, womp—but I did notice the formula didn’t exacerbate my existing acne). In the winter, I struggle with foundation application, because most foundations look “crackly” thanks to the formulas sitting on top of my drier-than-normal skin, but I noticed smoother application and more radiant finish post Soft Swerve use every night.

I’m a product nerd, and I absolutely *had* to find out the true difference between an $18 barrier cream and a $600+ luxury occlusive face lotion, and the answer shocked me. If you really study Crème de la Mer’s formula, you’ll find that it’s primarily made of mineral oil, petrolatum, microcrystalline wax, lanolin alcohol, and paraffin, while Soft Swerve’s is made entirely of barrier lipids and is sans fragrance (which makes it even better for sensitive skin).

Crème de la Mer’s “selling point” is that its foundational ingredient is the iconic “Miracle Broth,” which is algae extract (this calms skin and combats signs of aging), and it also uses lime tea extract which has antioxidant benefits. Don’t get me wrong—the formula is still effective and feels incredibly luxe, and I’ve been using it for years. “Fragrance can and should be part of the entire wedding experience,” says Dana Steinfeld, head of Blue Sky and senior vice president of product development. Wedding perfume is like an invisible veil that completes your wedding glam and helps tell the story of your big day.

Type of Fragrance Best for Weddings, According to Experts

Wedding fragrances vary a lot and are highly personal, depending on individual scent profile preferences and the general mood you wish to invoke on your big day. “The best wedding fragrances are always the ones that make brides feel most beautiful and confident in their skin,” says Steinfeld. “Some may want to feel more classic and choose to learn toward unique florals, others may want a more decadent, sexy approach.”

While there are no hard rules about choosing fragrances for your big day, Steinfeld says it’s best to “think of scent as an extension of your personality and a tool you can use to enhance different events and experiences for the special occasion.” You can choose a specific fragrance for the entire wedding weekend or even assign certain fragrance profiles to each unique moment, like one for the rehearsal dinner, another for the family gatherings, one for the wedding day, and even one for the morning after brunch. “Scent can also enhance the environment, such as having candles lit for the wedding and gifting the same scent to your guests as a way to remember the event,” Steinfeld adds.

Because fragrance is so personal, Steinfel says there isn’t one singular, most popular wedding perfume. “Scent is a way to express emotion, mood, [and] feelings, and personal preferences can change over time,” she explains. When choosing a wedding perfume, she recommends thinking about the profiles that make you feel most comfortable—even if it’s your same, tried-and-true fragrance you wear every day—and embody the things you want to say and feel on your wedding day.

Brides can also approach fragrance from a more sentimental standpoint. “They may want to wear something that reminds them of a loved one, something nostalgic, or something that makes a bold statement,” says Steinfeld.

ARMY, the time has come! BTS has officially announced their first tour in four years, and we have all the deets to secure your tickets.

The seven members will perform across Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America, and Australia for 79 dates, marking one of the most expansive tours of the band’s career. It marks the first tour together since RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook all returned from their South Korean mandatory military service. In addition to a tour, the members announced that new music is coming out in March. Whether you’ve been with them since debut, or this is your first BTS concert, you absolutely don’t want to miss out on these performances.

Tickets for ARMY Membership holders will go on sale beginning January 22 – 23 (Local Time), followed by general ticket sales on January 24 (Local Time) across all regions.

Here’s a step-by-step process for presale and general sale:

How to Get BTS Tickets from ARMY Presale

Fans who have an ARMY Membership on the fan community platform Weverse get first dibs to claim tickets on Ticketmaster two days before it goes out to the public.

1.) Sign up for a Weverse account on weverse.io and select BTS as an artist.
2.) Buy an ARMY Membership depending on your region through the Weverse Shop. If you’re aiming to get tickets for the US dates, you can sign up for either Global Membership or US Membership.

3.) Use this link to apply for the ARMY Membership ticket sale for the US/Global, and this link for Europe. The application is open from Tues, Jan. 13 at 7:30 AM PT until Sun, Jan 18 at 3:00 PM PT. If you do not submit an application during the time period, you will not be eligible for the presale, even if you do have ARMY Membership.

4.) Choose up to three cities to get tickets for in the form and submit.

5.) ARMY Membership Presale starts on Thursday, Jan. 22, and select dates go on sale on Friday, Jan. 23. Specific times for when tickets go on sale and which ticketing site a venue uses can be found here.
- Note: Your Weverse ID (email address) associated with your ARMY MEMBERSHIP must match the email associated with your Ticketmaster account – if it doesn’t, you won’t be able to join the queue. 6.) When prompted during the sale, enter your ARMY Membership number (starts with BA and has 9 numbers). This will be your presale code.

7.) Enter the queue, select your tickets, and check out. Fans will be able to purchase four tickets per date for the US, Latin America, Australia, Europe, and select Asia dates. Tickets are one per person per date for dates in South Korea and Japan.
