9-year-old girl, TV news staffer among 3 killed in Orlando shootings

    [ad_1]

A 9-year-old girl and a local TV news journalist were among three people killed and two others wounded in shootings in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, authorities said.

Keith Melvin Moses, 19, has been arrested in connection with the shootings, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said in a news conference. Moses is expected to be charged in the shootings, Mina said.

Moses allegedly shot and killed a woman in her 20s on Wednesday morning, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said, and police were called later in the day to two additional shootings near the scene.

At one home, a 9-year-old child and her mother were shot, Mina said, while at another scene nearby, staffers from Spectrum News 13 who were covering the previous shooting were shot near their vehicle.

Mina said the deadly rampage began at 11 a.m. local time when deputies responded to a shooting and discovered a woman in her 20s who had been fatally shot.

Moses was an acquaintance of that victim, he said. Then, shortly after 4 p.m., deputies received another call regarding two additional shootings near one another.

In one location, deputies located a reporter and photographer for Spectrum News 13 — who were on the scene to cover the homicide which had occurred Wednesday morning — shot in or near their news vehicle, Mina said.

Mina said it is unclear why the Spectrum News 13 crew members were targeted, or if the suspect even knew whether or not they were media members, because the news vehicle wasn’t obvious.

After being taken to a hospital, one of the News 13 employees died from their injuries, Mina said. Spectrum News 13 said on its website that they were not yet releasing any information on the journalists who were involved in the shooting.

Authorities also discovered a woman and her 9-year-old daughter inside a nearby home who had been shot. Mina said the 9-year-old child died while her mother was continuing to “fight for her life.”

“It is unclear why the suspect entered that home,” Mina said. The sheriff said they didn’t yet know if the suspect had any connection to the news crew, or the mother and daughter.

Mina said that Moses has a lengthy criminal history that includes gun charges and charges for aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft.

NOPD Chief Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier told CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV officers “were quickly able to apprehend the suspect we believe responsible for this” and that two guns were recovered.

“This is really not something we wanted to see,” said Ganthier. “We really wanted this to be a safe Mardi Gras.”

The parade was temporarily held up but then allowed to continue, WWL reported.

An eyewitness told WWL there were at least a dozen shots and people were falling all over themselves trying to get out of the way, leaving everything they had behind them.

The eyewitness said there were several skirmishes that officers broke up before the shooting in the vicinity of where the gunfire happened.

  • Six killed in series of shootings in Mississippi; suspect in custody, sheriff says

Six killed in series of shootings in Mississippi; suspect in custody, sheriff says

    [ad_1]

Six people were killed in a series of shootings Friday in northwestern Mississippi, authorities said. A suspect is in custody, the sheriff’s office in Tate County, Mississippi, confirmed to CBS News.

The shootings happened at three locations in Arkabutla, Mississippi, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. Officials didn’t identify the victims.

“We are in the very early stages of the investigation so we can only release a limited amount of information,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Richard Dale Crum, 52, of Arkabulta and said he was charged with first-degree murder. The suspect was being held without bond and would face additional charges.

The shootings happened at a store and homes in Arkabutla, Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance told CBS affiliate WREG-TV.

According to the sheriff, a man was shot at the store and five other people were shot at homes in the small town. The suspect was taken into custody after a chase, the sheriff told the station.

Richard Dale Crum is seen in a police booking photo provided by the Tate County Sheriff's Office in Mississippi on Feb. 17, 2023.

“At this time, we believe he acted alone,” Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said in a statement on Facebook. “His motive is not yet known.”

Ethan Cash, 19, told WREG-TV he heard gunshots from inside his home and saw a man with a shotgun outside. Cash eventually went outside to see what happened.

“I go up to the truck where a guy got shot at, and I check his pulse and everything, make sure he’s OK,” Cash said. “He’s already gone at this point.”

The governor said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was asked to assist in the investigation. Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in New Orleans were also providing assistance, the agency said.

“Please pray for the victims of this tragic violence and their families at this time,” Reeves said.

In a statement Friday night, President Biden said that he and first lady Jill Biden were “mourning for the six killed.”

Mr. Biden, who in his State of the Union address last week called on Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons, reiterated his belief Friday that the U.S. needs “commonsense gun law reforms.”

“That includes requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, fully closing the boyfriend loophole to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, requiring safe storage of guns, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets,” Mr. Biden said. “These are commonsense steps that Congress could take right now and save lives.”

One killed, 3 injured in shooting at El Paso mall; 2 suspects arrested

    [ad_1]

One person was killed and three others wounded in a shooting Wednesday evening at a mall in El Paso, Texas, authorities said, and two male suspects have been arrested.

The shooting was reported at 5:05 p.m. local time at the Cielo Vista Mall, Interim El Paso Police Chief Peter Pacillas said in a late Wednesday night news conference.

Within three minutes of the shooting, off-duty officers who were working security in the mall had responded, and one of those off-duty officers took a suspect into custody, Pacillas disclosed.

“We had off-duty officers working at the local establishment within the mall, and were on scene at 5:08 p.m., within three minutes,” Pacillas said, adding that the off-duty officer arrested the suspect without firing a weapon.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and three others were taken to local hospitals, police said. There was no immediate word on their conditions. All four victims were males, Pacillas said.

The police chief did not provide details on how the second suspect was apprehended, and no names, ages or descriptions of the victims or suspects were immediately released.

“There is no more danger to the public,” Pacillas said of the situation.

El Paso police Sgt. Robert Gomez told reporters in an earlier briefing that the investigation indicated the shooting occurred “in the approximate area of the food court, but that was not confirmed.”

There was no word yet on a motive.

Multiple agencies responded to the shooting, including the FBI, Texas Department of Public Safety, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Border Patrol. The FBI was assisting El Paso police with its investigation, Pacillas said. Jeffrey Downey, special agent in charge of the FBI El Paso Field Office, praised the off-duty officer who arrested the first suspect.

“A great deal of credit needs to go out to the off-duty officer that was at the mall this evening, and was able to get one of these individuals in custody in a very quick amount of time,” Downey said.

Pacillas said the mall would remain “locked down” until authorities completed their initial investigation.

The shooting comes exactly a week after the 24-year-old gunman in the 2019 mass shooting at a nearby Walmart — in which 23 people were killed by a man deliberately targeting Hispanic people — pleaded guilty to federal hate crime and firearms charges. That Walmart is located across the street from the Cielo Vista Mall.

The gunman, Patrick Crusius, agreed as part of a plea deal to accept 90 consecutive life sentences, one for each count in the indictment.

Neighbors say alleged Michigan State gunman target practiced in backyard

    01:49

Lansing, Mich. — Although neighbors in Lansing describe the man police say was the Michigan State University gunman as generally quiet, they told CBS Detroit’s Andres Gutierrez gunfire was a common occurrence in the backyard of his father’s home.

Authorities say McRae killed three students and wounded five others Monday night before shooting himself to death when he was confronted by police off-campus, near his father’s house. Police say he wasn’t affiliated with the school and they’re searching for a motive.

Neighbors say they often heard McRae shooting target practice in the backyard.

“And he’s always popping off and rounds — ‘Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop pop’ — all (the) time in the summer and I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’” said one neighbor, Ray.

“We didn’t even think about it, you know, other than we’ve heard the shots and stuff and we’d be like (what) the heck? . … But we didn’t have any issues. Like, he wasn’t out there in the street going crazy or anything,” said Megan Bender.

Police are trying to figure out what triggered McRae to carry out shooting. Authorities didn’t know where he was until they released surveillance photos and someone recognized him.

Ray believes it was the outfit that made it easy.

“You don’t see people wearing that. And I knew exactly who he was. And if he didn’t — if I didn’t hear that call from my brother that he took his own life, I was calling the police in two seconds,” Ray said.

One neighbor, Fransico, said the tragedy has floored him and he hopes there are more answers soon.

Authorities say MaRae had a criminal history involving firearms and was on probation for 18 months for possessing a loaded gun in a vehicle.

Police found a note in his pocket indicating a threat to two schools in Ewing Township, New Jersey, where he had ties, the district’s superintendent said in a statement posted online.

Off-duty NYPD officer shot and wounded while trying to buy car in Brooklyn, police say

    [ad_1]

An off-duty NYPD police officer trying to buy a car was shot and critically wounded Saturday night in Brooklyn during an attempted robbery, officials said. The gunman is at large.

The shooting occurred at about 7 p.m. local time after the off-duty officer arrived at a prearranged meeting spot to look at a vehicle, NYPD Assistant Chief Michael Baldassano said in a Friday night news conference. The officer had also brought a relative, Baldassano said.

“Almost immediately, the suspect displayed a gun and announced a robbery,” Baldassano told reporters. “There was an exchange of gunfire, where the off-duty officer was struck.”

The suspect fled, and the officer was rushed to a Brooklyn hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said. The officer’s name was not immediately released.

The officer’s relative was not injured.

The officer, a five-year NYPD veteran, had arranged the meet-up on social media, Baldassano disclosed.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the wounded officer was married and had children.

“An officer conducting a simple errand, and a dangerous person pulled out a firearm, as we so often see in this city,” Adams said. “Too many illegal guns are in the hands of bad people and doing bad things.”

No further details were provided, including whether the officer was armed or fired at the suspect. No suspect description was immediately released.

San Francisco synagogue shooting of blanks prompts FBI investigation

    01:09

A man suspected of firing a gun possibly loaded with blanks inside a San Francisco synagogue earlier this week has been arrested, authorities announced Saturday. Police believe the same suspect also brandishing a gun in a nearby theater.

The suspect was taken into custody Friday evening in the city’s Richmond District on suspicion of disturbing a religious assembly, brandishing an imitation firearm and causing another to refrain from engaging in a religious service, San Francisco police said in a news release.

The San Francisco County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 51-year-old Dmitri Mishin, according to CBS San Francisco. He was booked at around 12:30 a.m. local time Saturday, according to sheriff’s office inmate records.

On Wednesday evening, according to police, a man entered the Schneerson Center — located just a few blocks from Golden Gate Park, and fired multiple shots before fleeing. No one was hurt and no property was damaged, police said.

Officers weren’t called to the synagogue until the following day, CBS San Francisco reports. Police said they found expended casings at the scene which were being “investigated as possible blanks.”

Surveillance video shared with CBS San Francisco by the synagogue showed the suspect entering a room which contained several people. He speaks and makes hand gestures before taking out what appears to be a gun and firing.

“He starts shooting in the air everywhere, and talking about the Mossad, and this and that, and craziness, and then he seems to waive and leave,” Alon Chanukov, junior rabbi and vice president of the Schneerson Center, told CBS San Francisco.

The FBI, which is assisting in the case, also released a surveillance photo of the suspect in which he appeared to be carrying a handgun.

Police said that Mishin is also suspected in a similar incident which occurred on Tuesday night — at a theater about a half-mile from the synagogue — in which a man entered the theater brandishing a handgun. There were no injuries in that incident either, police said.

Following Mishin’s arrest, investigators searched his residence, where they found evidence linking him to both incidents, police said Saturday. It’s unclear if a firearms was also recovered.
