Man who murdered waitress at Roseville restaurant sentenced 55 years to life

(FOX40.COM) — A man who walked into a Placer County restaurant and murdered his ex-fiancé who worked there as a server was sentenced on Monday.

In June of 2021, 48-year-old Johnnie Jordan entered House of Oliver and shot 51-year-old Vita Joga, according to the Placer County District Attorney’s Office. Next, he drove to the South Placer Jail and turned himself in.

“The relationship started like any other, with a coffee date that led to a romantic relationship,” prosecutors said. “Unfortunately, Jordan had a violent history with a record of possessing a firearm as a felon, criminal threats, and more that Joga was not aware of.”

The district attorney reported that the relationship progressed into an engagement, but the victim decided to part ways. The split led to jealousy, stalking, and continued domestic violence. Jordan reportedly had a “history of strangulation.”

On Monday, Judge St. Evans sentenced Jordan, now age 55, to 50 years to life in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for first-degree murder of Joga.

“Today was about Vita and her loving family and friends. No one should have to experience or endure intimate partner violence on any level.” said Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire. “Our office stands committed to empowering our victims and survivors- to strengthen their voice, to educate our community about risk factors and warning signs, and to help survivors re-write their story and escape toxic environments before it’s too late.”

  • Neighbors details shooting that killed 12-year-old boy at east Harris County apartment complex

Neighbors details shooting that killed 12-year-old boy at east Harris County apartment complex

HOUSTON – Twelve-year-old Carlos Fernandez never made it to school Monday morning after deputies said he was shot and killed inside his family’s apartment in east Harris County.

Daisy Delgado lives next door and recalled hearing loud banging and the sound of tears woke her up.

“I kept hearing a woman crying and that is what I woke up to. All I heard was her saying that he got shot and they ran off. I didn’t expect it to be a kid,” said Delgado.

Deputies said it appeared the shooter went up to a window and opened fire directly into the bedroom, killing young Carlos. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the shooter took off in a pickup truck. Deputies did not have a description of the truck.

One of the bullets went through Jim Simms and Minnie Sandles’ dining room, next door.

“I’m laying in my bed and I heard something go ‘clank, pop’ and I walked out about right here but I had no idea there was a hole in that wall,” Sandles said.

“Next thing I know, I’m getting ready for work this morning and my door is taped off and that’s when I discovered something had happened,” Simms said.

Carlos’ little sisters, ages 6 and 7, were also in the home at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt, according to family members. Loved ones said Carlos’ mother and another man inside the home, also dodged the gunfire.

Deputies said they believe the shooting was targeted.

The Sheriffs Office has not said why the family and their apartment was targeted or the possible relationship between the shooter and the family.

Neighbors who heard the chaos this morning said they have been concerned about the family’s safety in the past. Three days before Carlos’ death, neighbors saw deputies outside the family’s apartment.

“All I saw was cops and them outside in the back arguing,” Delgado said.

“I’m hearing them and I’m sitting there watching TV and I’m hearing stuff going up against the walls,” Simms said.

It’s unclear if the 911 call to the family’s home on Friday is connected to Monday’s shooting, but neighbors are hoping whoever killed young Carlos is caught.

Family members describe Carlos as adorable, helpful and the best son, brother and grandson. They are asking for the community’s prayers. The family has created a GoFundMe page to help with their unexpected costs.

Galena Park Independent School District said Carlos was a student at Cobb’s 6th grade campus.

Counseling services have been provided to students and staff.

Four people were shot when a man kicked out of a club for fighting opened fire from an SUV, Texas authorities say.

The incident began at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2, when two men in their 20s were involved in a fight at the club, Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Wyatt Martin said in a news briefing streamed by KHOU.

They were asked to leave, and when they got outside, they began arguing with off-duty sheriff’s deputies who were working as part of the security detail, according to Martin.

One of the men entered a black SUV, while the other man kept trying to get back into the club, police said. A woman eventually convinced him to get into the vehicle.

That’s when the driver — the first man who was kicked out — began firing at the security personnel with a handgun, Martin said. Four people, including security officers, were struck by the gunfire.

The Harris County deputies working security were not among the injured victims, police said.

“The fact that they would shoot indiscriminately at a club crowded with people just because they were asked to leave, whether they were intoxicated or whatever, shows that they really have very little regard for the safety of the people around them,” Martin said in the news briefing.

Two of the victims were taken to a hospital for surgery but were expected to be OK, according to police. The other two victims were treated at the scene.

Police are now searching for the two men, who fled in the SUV.

Martin said the deputies did not return gunfire due to “fear of hitting innocent bystanders.”

  • At least 2 wounded in shooting outside high school basketball game near Kansas City

At least 2 wounded in shooting outside high school basketball game near Kansas City

At least two people were critically wounded in a shooting Saturday outside of a basketball game on a high school campus in North Kansas City, Missouri, officials said.

Shots were heard “at the conclusion” of the game at North Kansas City High School, the city said in a statement provided to CBS News. North Kansas City is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Two Clay County Sheriff’s deputies who were providing security for the game itself responded to the entrance of the school’s football field, where they found a crime scene with one victim, the city said.

It was later learned there was a second victim, a juvenile, the city said. Both victims were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition.

The shooting occurred outside the building where the game was being played, the North Kansas City Schools district said in a message it shared with families and staff.

“All guests inside were asked to stay indoors while law enforcement worked to resolve the issue safely,” the district said.

North Kansas City police Sgt. Christopher Kimmel told reporters in a news briefing Saturday night that the shooting was believed to have taken place “outside the school by the fieldhouse.”

Witnesses told police that someone was seen running from the scene, the city said.

The circumstances of the shooting were unclear, and investigators were still working to determine a motive, Kimmel said. Also unknown was how many suspects were involved, or whether the incident was connected to the game.

“We’re reviewing video right now trying to figure out exactly what we have,” Kimmel said. “…I think we do have some witnesses that we’re currently trying to interview.”

The game was between North Kansas City High and Staley High, which is also in the same district.

“We want our youth to come and enjoy a basketball game, and now we’re talking about lives that are altered for the worse, and I’m sure it’s going to be senseless,” Kimmel said.

The incident comes less than three weeks after a deadly shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade. The Feb. 14 shooting left a woman dead and 22 people wounded, including many children.  Two men have since been charged with murder.

A teenager was arrested and charged in connection to the shooting death of a Vermont woman, police said.

The woman was found shot dead Jan. 23 in a St. Johnsbury parking lot near Cornerstone School, which serves children with disabilities from kindergarten to eighth grade, according to a Feb. 26 Vermont State Police news release. Now more than a month later, a 15-year-old was charged with murder in connection to her death.

A passerby noticed a vehicle with bullet holes in the parking lot at about 6 p.m. and called St. Johnsbury Police Department to investigate, authorities said.

The bystander spotted a person inside who appeared to be “slumped over,” and on a closer look by officers, they found the woman dead inside, according to police.

Authorities informed the community that they believed the shooting was an “isolated event with no identified threat” to the public. The woman’s body was sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy shortly after, police said.

The woman was identified by the medical examiner as 38-year-old Christina Chatlos, police said. The Williamstown-Barre resident’s death was caused by a gunshot wound to her torso, and her death was ruled a homicide, according to authorities.

While Chatlos’ autopsy was being conducted, state police said they spoke with witnesses in the area and tried to pinpoint any video evidence of the shooting. As part of the investigation, two people were detained by state police, authorities said.

Then, state police announced a 15-year-old suspect was arrested Feb. 26 in connection to Chatlos’ death by Massachusetts State Police.

The teenager was already in custody in Massachusetts due to an unrelated warrant, authorities said. He was in juvenile custody as the shooting investigation in Vermont proceeded, police said.

State police are charging the teenager as an adult with second-degree murder. He is accused of shooting and killing Chatlos during a confrontation in the parking lot, according to police.

The teenager is awaiting extradition to Vermont from the Caledonia County State’s Attorney’s Office, police said. The investigation by Vermont State Police is ongoing.

St. Johnsbury is about 35 miles northeast from Montpelier.

Child shot in car in Santa Ana, is reported to be in critical condition

A child was hospitalized Sunday evening, Feb. 25, after she was struck by gunfire while in the back seat of a car in Santa Ana, authorities said, with a search underway for the shooter.

The young girl was admitted to a hospital after a bullet struck her while she was sitting in the back of her parents’ car in the area near 17th and Spurgeon streets, according to Santa Ana Police Department Officer Natalie Garcia.

It was not immediately known where exactly the child had been injured in the shooting reported just before 9 p.m., though authorities warned residents to avoid the area along Main Street between 15th and 17th streets. The area of 17th and Spurgeon was closed for the investigation.

The child was in critical condition at the hospital Sunday night.

Video news agency OnScene.TV provided video showing crime scene tape was set up by police on Spurgeon Street.

Police were also seen Sunday night at CHOC — Children’s Hospital Of Orange County in Orange, where a white sedan was parked at an entrance and surrounded by crime scene tape.

Information on a possible suspect, and whether it was a car-to-car shooting, was not immediately available and anyone with information was urged to call authorities, Garcia said.

For some, Sunday’s shooting brought back painful memories of children struck by gunfire while riding in cars in recent year.

A 4-year-old boy,  Gor Adamyan, was killed in a car-to-car shooting in Lancaster in December.

And Aiden Leos, 6, was fatally shot on the 55 Freeway in Orange as his mother drove him to kindergarten in 2021.

A suspect in a Manassas, Virginia, barricade situation, who surrendered, is hospitalized with a gunshot wound, according to authorities.

The barricade situation at a home in the 9200 block of Bayberry Avenue started around 7 p.m. Friday night.

In a post on X around 7:15 p.m. Friday night, Manassas City police said there was a heavy police presence at a single-family home after reports of shots fired.

A Manassas City Police Department spokesperson told WTOP that the scene “quickly escalated” as multiple shots were fired inside the house. When officers arrived, the suspect began shooting at police.

Saturday morning, police said the suspect was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to “the chest area,” but it wasn’t clear if that was due to officer gunfire, a self-inflicted gunshot wound or an injury from a previous incident.

The Manassas City Police Department said it had requested help from “the regional Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) to oversee the investigation as an independent body due to officer involved shooting.”

Hours earlier, police said residents were “safe to resume regular activity.”

Below is a map of the area of the barricade situation:

  • DC police sergeant pleads guilty to federal civil rights violation in fatal shooting of man sleeping in car – WTOP News

DC police sergeant pleads guilty to federal civil rights violation in fatal shooting of man sleeping in car – WTOP News

A D.C. police sergeant pleaded guilty Friday to violating the civil rights of a man found sleeping in his car in Northeast in 2021.

A D.C. police sergeant pleaded guilty Friday to violating the civil rights of a man found sleeping in his car in Northeast in 2021, according to the Department of Justice.

Enis Jevric, 42, pleaded guilty in federal court in the shooting death of 27-year-old An’Twan Gilmore by using excessive force. Jevric also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

“Police officers are sworn to uphold the law and ensure the safety of the community, and we are grateful for the overwhelming majority of Metropolitan Police Department officers who do their difficult and dangerous jobs honorably,” U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves said in a news release.

“But Officer Jevric violated the Constitution and abused his position by recklessly using deadly force where none was necessary, resulting in the tragic and unjustified loss of Mr. Gilmore’s life — a tragedy that has permanently changed the lives of Mr. Gilmore’s family and friends. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to protecting the civil rights of everyone within the District and to holding accountable all who violate those rights.”

On Aug. 25, 2021, shortly before 3 a.m., a group of D.C. police officers responded to a call about a car stopped at the intersection of New York Avenue and Florida Avenue NE with an armed man inside.

As WTOP previously reported, body camera video showed they found Gilmore sleeping in the driver’s seat with a gun in his waistband.

According to the DOJ, Jevric approached the car and directed another officer to knock on its windows to wake Gilmore up. When Gilmore woke up, the car moved forward, stopped, then moved forward again.

As it did so, the DOJ said, Jevric shot at the car four times. The car then rolled down New York Avenue and Jevric fired at it six more times.

Gilmore was struck three times and later died.

No other officer fired at Gilmore, the DOJ said. At the time, former D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said the incident went against department policies.

Jevric’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 1.

  • 3 suspects sought after 45-year-old man killed in dispute on subway train in Bronx

3 suspects sought after 45-year-old man killed in dispute on subway train in Bronx

TREMONT, Bronx (WABC) — Police have released surveillance images of three suspects after a man was killed following a fight on a subway train in the Bronx early Friday morning.

The 45-year-old was fatally injured on a southbound D train at the 182-183 Street station just before 5:30 a.m.

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said it appears the victim said something to a person who sat down too close to him.

The two started arguing and the 45-year-old was surrounded by two additional passengers who were riding with the initial suspect.

The victim was fatally injured when the train reached the station.

“The whole incident was recorded on a camera that was on the subway car,” MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said.

Police say it appeared he had been either shot or stabbed and that the medical examiner will make the final determination about what kind of weapon was used.

The three suspects seen in the surveillance images left the train at the 182-183 Streets station, leaving the victim to die of his wounds.

The motive remains “unknown. We do know that the victim wasn’t the primary aggressor in this case,” NYPD Assistant Chief Jerry O’Sullivan said.

Along with the entire incident captured on surveillance camera, “there were other riders on that car and there were other riders on the cars adjoining,” NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper said. “We do have eyewitnesses and ear witnesses.”

The station remained closed into the morning while authorities conducted their investigation.

Neighbors said they were shaken by the deadly incident.

“I know to avoid this station because it’s typically a dangerous station, so I typically take the station ahead or behind and travel from there, it’s terrible… the train is not safe,” the neighbor named Cameron said.

No weapon was recovered and no arrests have been made.

The man’s death comes on the heels of the transit system seeing an uptick with overall crime up by 22.6%

Just a week and a half ago, a man was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at the Mt. Eden station during rush hour.

  • Israel says Palestinian gunmen killed after West Bank attack lauded by Hamas, as Gaza deaths near 30,000

Israel says Palestinian gunmen killed after West Bank attack lauded by Hamas, as Gaza deaths near 30,000

Jerusalem — Three Palestinian gunmen opened fire early Thursday morning near a busy checkpoint in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, killing one Israeli and wounding at least eight others, according to Israeli police. The police said two attackers were killed at the scene and the third was later found and arrested.

Tension between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank has soared since Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel sparked the ongoing war in the other Palestinian territory, the Gaza Strip, which has been ruled by Hamas for almost two decades.

Israel’s National Security Minister, ultranationalist Itamar Ben-Gvir, visiting the scene declared that Israelis’ “right to our lives prevails on their [Palestinians] freedom of movement.”

He suggested that officials “need to distribute more weapons” to Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank – whose very presence is illegal under international law but strongly supported by Ben-Gvir and other members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government.

Hamas issued a statement lauding “the heroic operation south of occupied Jerusalem,” calling the attack near the West Bank checkpoint “a natural response to the occupation’s massacres and crimes in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank.”

Support for Hamas in the West Bank has increased significantly since the war in Gaza began, and that devastating war appeared nowhere near easing on Thursday.

Reports from the Gaza Strip suggest Israel has intensified its bombardment of the southern part of the decimated enclave in recent days. The Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health says almost 30,000 people have been killed in the territory since the war began. It does not distinguish between combatant and civilian casualties, but according to United Nations agencies, a majority of the dead have been women and children.

The health ministry said Thursday that Israeli strikes over the last 24 hours alone had killed 97 people from nine families and left 132 others wounded.

Netanyahu has ordered the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for a ground incursion into the large southern Gaza city of Rafah, right on the territory’s southern border with Egypt. Around 1.5 million Palestinians have crammed into the city and its immediate surroundings seeking sheltering from the war raging all around.

The town of Khan Younis, only about five miles north of Rafah, has been the scene of intense fighting for weeks, pushing more civilians to flee south toward the Egyptian border, where living conditions are dire and getting worse by the day.

The IDF said Thursday that it was continuing to “engage and kill terrorists and destroy terrorist infrastructure in the area of Khan Younis.”

  • 2 suspects in Kansas City parade shooting charged with murder, prosecutors announce

2 suspects in Kansas City parade shooting charged with murder, prosecutors announce

Two men have been charged with murder in the deadly shooting at last week’s Kansas City Chiefs parade, prosecutors announced Tuesday. The prosecution of the two men comes after two juvenile suspects were separately charged last week in connection with the shooting that killed a woman and wounded 22 other people near Union Station shortly after the rally celebrating the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker told reporters that one of the suspects, Lyndell Mays, had an argument with another person at the rally and the argument escalated and Mays allegedly drew a handgun.

Others pulled out their guns, including the other suspect charged, Dominic Miller, Baker said. The prosecutor said evidence indicated Miller’s gun was the one that allegedly killed the fatal victim, identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old mother of two and a local radio DJ.

Miller was seen in surveillance video watching the argument from several feet away, according to court documents. He then pulled out a gun, chased after one of the people in the argument and appeared to start shooting, police said in a probable cause statement.

Lopez-Galvan was in a crowd of people in the direction where Miller was allegedly firing, according to the statement. Miller was shot in the chaos, and he appeared to trip over a cone while he was shooting and then fled the scene, according to the statement.

Miller told investigators at a hospital that a man was shooting at him and he returned fire, according to the statement. He estimated that he fired four or five shots from his 9 mm handgun but he wasn’t certain if he hit the man he was firing at, according to the statement.

Both Mays and Miller have been charged with second-degree murder and other charges and are being held on a $1 million bond. Mays was charged Saturday morning and the charges were sealed because the investigation was “so active and ongoing,” Baker said.

The charges against Mays were unsealed Tuesday afternoon, and Miller was charged Monday night, Baker said. The investigation into the shooting remained ongoing, the prosecutor said.

“We seek to hold every shooter accountable for their actions on that day — every single one,” Baker said. “So while we’re not there yet on every single individual, we’re going to get there.”

Last week, authorities charged two juvenile suspects with gun-related and resisting-arrest offenses in the shooting. Their cases are being handled by a different office, Baker said.

It wasn’t clear what sparked the argument that led to the shooting, Baker said.

“You can obviously see that there is, you know, some kind of verbal argument occurring and it just turns deadly,” Baker said.

Defendants aged 17 and under in Missouri are typically adjudicated through the juvenile system, which is far more private than the system for adults, according to The Associated Press. Names of the accused are not released, nor are police documents such as probable cause statements.

Lopez-Galvan’s family expressed gratitude for the suspects being charged.

“Though it does not bring back our beloved Lisa, it is comforting to know that the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office and the KCPD made it a top priority to seek justice for Lisa, the other shooting victims, those who had to witness this tragedy unfold and the Kansas City community,” the family said in a statement.
