  • Hennepin County attorney to demand Alex Pretti killing evidence from feds

    Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says she will be sending a letter this week to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice to demand they turn over evidence in the Jan. 24 killing of Alex Pretti by immigration officers in south Minneapolis.

    Moriarty has already sent a letter with the same demands for the Jan. 7 fatal shooting of Renee Good, also in south Minneapolis, by ICE officer Jonathan Ross. Moriarty says the response deadline in that case is set for Tuesday.

    Moriarty has been investigating those two cases — as well as the shooting of a Venezuelan national in north Minneapolis on Jan. 14 — without federal assistance.

    In that non-fatal case, Homeland Security claims three undocumented men attacked a federal agent with a snow shovel and a broom, and that fearing for his life, the agent shot one of the men in the leg. 

    The case against the three men has now been dismissed, and the acting director of ICE said two agents have been placed on leave and are being investigated for lying under oath after video evidence surfaced disputing their claims.

    Moriarty says an evidence submission portal she created with the backing of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has been allowing the public to submit evidence including videos and eyewitness accounts.

    DHS has argued Minnesota doesn’t have jurisdiction over federal agents because under the Constitution’s supremacy clause. Moriarty says that doesn’t apply if agents broke the law.

    “I think evidence that is more compelling than having the gun or the shell casings is actually the autopsy reports on both [Good and Pretti],” Moriarty said. “Because for instance in [Renee Good’s case], that would tell us how many times she was shot, the angle, the direction of those shots and which shots were fatal.”

    Moriarty is not seeking another term, and a new county attorney will be elected in November. She says that timeline is not an issue. And in the past, complicated cases involving law enforcement have moved swiftly in Hennepin County. For example, Derek Chauvin’s conviction in the George Floyd case came 11 months after the murder.

  • Suspect charged in Springfield Mall shooting – WTOP News

    A juvenile suspect is in custody after a shooting left a man hospitalized Thursday evening at Springfield Mall.

    Several charges were filed against the individual tied to a shooting that took place Thursday evening at the Springfield Mall in Virginia and left a man hospitalized, police said.

    The alleged shooter was taken to the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center.

    The charges, announced by the Fairfax County Police Department on Sunday, include aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm within a building, removing or altering a serial number and possession of a firearm by someone under 18. He is being held pending a detention hearing.

    Officers were called around 5:34 p.m. to the 6500 block of Springfield Mall for reports of a shooting.

    When they got there, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

    Investigators say the shooting stemmed from a verbal dispute between the suspect and the victim. During that confrontation, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and fired, ultimately fleeing before officers arrived.

    Police arrested the suspect after locating him inside a mall parking garage.

    A second juvenile was also arrested in connection with an associated assault. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene.

    Detectives with the Major Crimes Bureau continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact Fairfax County police at 703-246-7800, option 2.

  • Man, teenage boy shot inside Columbia Heights restaurant, police say

    Police in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, are looking for the shooter who injured a man and a teenage boy Saturday night inside a restaurant.

    Officers from multiple departments, including Coon Rapids and Fridley, were called to NY Gyros off Central and 46 ½ avenues around 8:45 p.m. after reports that “a male fired gunshots inside the restaurant before fleeing,” police say.

    The two victims were taken to an area hospital, with both listed in stable condition.

    Police say they don’t believe this was a random attack, and are asking for anyone with information to call 763-427-1212.

    The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation, police say.

  • Evergreen shooter shot up equipment, was a patient at primary care office, sheriff’s office says

    A 62-year-old man who opened fire inside a primary care doctor’s office in Evergreen on Thursday night before taking his own life was previously a patient at the facility, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

    Investigators identified Lance Black, an Evergreen resident, as the person who fired a shotgun 19 times inside the CommonSpirit Primary Care office at 32214 Ellingwood Trail.

    Deputies began responding to calls about gunshots in the medical office at 4:23 p.m. Thursday and arrived on scene at 4:28 p.m., where they found broken windows, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Friday afternoon.

    Deputies entered the building and found Black, armed with a shotgun, the sheriff’s office said. They tried to de-escalate the situation, but Black fatally shot himself.

    Investigators found that Black shot at doors, walls, computers and other equipment during the shooting. No one was injured and no other businesses were damaged, other than a single round that entered a vacant office.

  • Man Shot in North Portland Park, Police Search for Suspect – KXL

    PORTLAND, OR – Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot and seriously injured Saturday morning in Northgate Park in north Portland, authorities said.

    According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 8:45 a.m. in the park near North Geneva Avenue south of Fessenden Street.

    According to PPB officers, they arrived to find a man with an apparent gunshot wound and began trauma first aid until an ambulance took him to a hospital. It is believed the injury was serious but not life-threatening, and the man was expected to survive.

    Investigators set up a crime scene and searched the area for a suspect or suspects, but no one had been arrested as of noon, police said. Authorities said any suspect had left the area before officers arrived.

    The bureau’s Enhanced Community Safety Team responded to the scene and is leading the investigation.

    At least one member of the U.S. Marshals Service shot and killed a person in Northeast D.C.’s Mayfair neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, a law enforcement source told WTOP.

    At least one member of the U.S. Marshals Service shot and killed a man in Northeast D.C.’s Mayfair neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, a law enforcement source told WTOP.

    The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of Hayes Street, on the eastern banks of the Anacostia River just southwest of Kenilworth. Julian Marquette Bailey, 43, was killed.

    According to a U.S. Marshals spokesman, marshals responded to a call for service for a crime that was being committed. Marshals were already patrolling the area as part of President Donald Trump’s law enforcement surge in D.C., and were the first to respond to the reported crime scene.

    “They don’t know what that crime was, but that suspect, they said, did produce a weapon and pointed it at deputies. And it was then, according to this U.S. Marshals spokesman, that a marshal shot and killed this person,” WTOP reporter Scott Gelman said from the scene. “There’s still a lot of unanswered questions.”

    In a statement to WTOP, U.S. Park Police said they assisted at the location and took one person by helicopter to a hospital after the shooting.

    The U.S. Marshals Service told WTOP no law enforcement personnel were injured. The Force Investigations Team of D.C. police’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the shooting.

  • Four Arrested In Connection To January Shooting At Aloha Apartment Complex – KXL

    WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ore. – Four people have been arrested in connection with a late-January shooting at an apartment complex in Aloha that left a 28-year-old man critically injured.

    The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says  deputies responded at 4:11 a.m. Jan. 31st to a report of a shooting at the Cedar Crest Apartments. Deputies and officers from the Beaverton Police Department found the victim inside an apartment with a gunshot wound.

    Investigators believe the shooting occurred during an armed robbery and involved multiple suspects. Detectives learned the victim had been with Yaneli Jaime, 26, shortly before the shooting.

    The suspects initially fled and were not found during an extensive search. Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Violent Crime Unit and the Washington County Major Crimes Team later executed more than 20 search warrants and conducted follow-up investigations across Oregon and Washington.

    Jaime was arrested Feb. 2 at a residence in Vancouver, Washington, and booked into the Clark County Jail.

    On Feb. 4, Diego Torres-Topete, 18, of Kennewick, Washington, was arrested by the Richland Police Department and booked into the Benton County Jail in Washington.

    On Wednesday, the United States Marshals Service arrested Arnoldo Avila, 20, and Roberto Huato, 18, in Hermiston. Both were booked into the Umatilla County Jail.

    All four suspects face charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree robbery.

    Cincinnati’s Jizzle James netted a season-high 24 points, and the Bearcats recorded their first road win in seven attempts by pounding Kansas State 91-62 on Wednesday in Manhattan, Kan.

    James sank 9 of 14 shots, including 6 of 8 from beyond the 3-point arc.

    Coming off a 20-point home thumping of UCF on Sunday, the Bearcats (13-12, 5-7 Big 12) won by jump-shooting their way to another double-digit win. Cincinnati made 50% of its field-goal attempts and 16 of 28 (57.1%) from long range.

    Jalen Celestine had 18 points and five rebounds for the Bearcats, while Baba Miller totaled 16 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Day Day Thomas notched 10 points, seven assists and two steals.

    The Wildcats (10-14, 1-10) lost their fifth straight contest and have dropped 10 of the past 11 outings. They shot 40.3% from the floor but were just 6 of 25 (24%) from 3-point range.

    Kansas State’s P.J. Haggerty, the nation’s second-leading scorer at 23.3 points per game, put up 24 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Taj Manning had nine rebounds and four assists.

    The visitors took off behind some excellent 3-point shooting inside the game’s first six minutes, canning 4 of 6 attempts. Celestine hit a pair from deep while Miller and James nailed one each for a 17-7 advantage.

    The sizzling shooting continued as Miller and James each drained another triple for a 25-11 lead at 12:51, and the margin grew to 28 points as the torrid sharpshooting rocketed the Bearcats away from the Wildcats.

    Cincinnati made seven consecutive field-goal attempts at one stretch of the opening half.

    Kansas State got a boost at the halftime buzzer on Manning’s layup to make it 53-31 at the break.

    Celestine’s 16 first-half points paced the Bearcats, who sank 57.1% from the floor. Haggerty had 11 points for the home side, which made 36.7% of its shots before intermission.

    Kansas State slashed the deficit to 18 early in the second half, but Cincinnati quickly rebuilt the margin on a 10-0 run, led by as many as 32 and breezed to the win.

    A young boy that police were searching for following a shooting in the Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. has been located safe.

    D.C. police had issued an Amber Alert for the 3-year-old boy following a shooting that killed his mother and injured a 12-year-old girl. The boy was found safe in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed Wednesday evening.

    The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4100 block of W Street NW. There, police found a woman shot several times and pronounced her dead on the scene. A 12-year-old girl was also found suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm and transported her to a hospital.

    An 8-year-old boy was also found, uninjured, in the home. Police said he’s been reunited with his father and is safe.

    During their investigation, Carroll said the “domestic” dispute inside the apartment “spilled out from the apartment into the hallway.”

    Police said the suspect in the shooting was identified as Stephon Jeter, 35.

    Jeter had fled the scene in a pickup truck that police posted on social media alongside his mugshot. Police later posted an Amber Alert on social media for a 3-year-old boy Wednesday evening, asking the public for help locating him.

    Carroll said at a news conference after the shooting that Prince George’s County police saw Jeter’s pickup truck and chased it into D.C. The vehicle crashed around 30th and Nash Place, Carroll said.

    Police found Jeter inside the vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and no sign of the 3-year-old.

    Carroll said that Jeter was the father of the 3-year-old boy. The two other children inside the Glover Park home were children of the woman who was killed.

    “This is one of the most tragic circumstances I’ve ever seen. An entire family is destroyed through the acts of an individual,” Carroll said. “Our hearts go out the entire family that’s involved in this.”

    The 3-year-old was found safe with a relative in Prince George’s County, Carroll said.

  • San Bruno house fire, shooting leaves 2 dead

    A house in San Bruno erupted into flames Friday afternoon following a shooting at the location, authorities said.

    The incident happened in the area of Rosewood Drive just west of Interstate Highway 280 around 3 p.m. The San Bruno Police Department said officers responded to a shooting before the fire, and a 31-year-old man was taken to the hospital, where he later died. 

    During a search of the home, police said they discovered human remains.

    Firefighters used multiple ladder trucks to pour water on the fire, and smoke could be seen for miles.

    Police have not said if there are any suspects, but said it’s a criminal investigation and the incident appears to be isolated. 

    The San Bruno Fire Department will investigate the origin of the fire, while the San Bruno Police Department’s Investigative Services Section is leading the criminal investigation. 

    The identities of the two who died have not been released.

  • Family of man killed by Douglas County deputy files wrongful death suit

    The Douglas County sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed a man in the parking lot of a Highlands Ranch arcade last year attacked him “unreasonably and excessively,” according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed Monday by the man’s family.

    Jalin Seabron, 23, died after Douglas County Deputy Nicholas Moore shot at him nine times while responding to reports of an active shooter at Main Event, striking him with seven bullets in the back and side. Seabron was not the shooter, but he was armed.

    Seabron had pulled the gun out to defend his friends and family, who were celebrating his birthday with him at the arcade, 64 Centennial Blvd., according to the lawsuit.

    Moore “unreasonably and recklessly charged into the scene, … without adequately evaluating the situation, utilizing a position of cover, or waiting for backup,” the lawsuit alleges. The deputy fired all nine shots within 15 seconds of arriving in the Main Event parking lot, his body camera video showed.

    “Hey!” the officer is heard shouting in the video. “Drop the gun! Drop the gun! Now! Drop it!”

    A woman can also be heard in the video, crying out for Moore not to shoot.

    The warnings to drop the weapon happened over roughly three seconds. When Seabron didn’t immediately respond and turned his head toward Moore, not appearing to raise his weapon from his side, the deputy started shooting.

    “At the time Moore opened fire, Mr. Seabron still had his back to the deputy and had just barely started to turn his head in reaction to the yelled commands,” the lawsuit stated.

    Moore “wrongly assumed” Seabron was the shooter and shot him without “verifying whether Mr. Seabron actually posed a threat, or providing Mr. Seabron a reasonable opportunity to comply with commands,” the lawsuit alleges. Seabron didn’t have time to process the orders, let alone obey them, the document claims.

    George Brauchler, the 23rd Judicial District Attorney, declined to file criminal charges against Moore in April 2025, after a month-long investigation into the police shooting by the district’s critical incident response team, according to a decision letter he sent to Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly.

    The deputy gave Seabron several commands to drop his gun, but the commands all happened within three seconds, according to the decision letter. Moore did not verbally identify himself as law enforcement, and did not use his sirens while responding to the scene, the letter confirms.

    State law allows a police officer to forgo that announcement if they believe doing so “would unduly place peace officers at risk or would create a risk of death or injury to other persons,” Brauchler said during an April news conference.

    The shooting inside the Highlands Ranch arcade started as a fight in the bathroom between Seabron’s stepsister, 23-year-old Nevaeha Crowley-Sanders, and a friend she had known since high school. Authorities said Crowley-Sanders pulled out a handgun and shot at the 22-year-old victim, her friend, eight times.

    Crowley-Sanders was assaulted by a group of women in the restroom and fired her gun in self-defense, ending the altercation, according to the lawsuit. The woman shot by Crowley-Sanders survived her injuries, and Crowley-Sanders was charged with attempted murder.

    Minneapolis Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Friday evening. 

    Police say officers responded to a crash near 33rd and Chicago Avenue around 8:25 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, they found a car had crashed into a building. 

    Officers found the driver of the car, and discovered the driver, a man, had been hit by gunfire. They started CPR and other lifesaving measures, but the man died at the scene. Police say no one else was in the car when officers arrived. 

    “Any gun violence in the city is unacceptable. Our investigators will work tirelessly to follow all leads,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. 

    Minneapolis police are investigating, but are asking anyone with information to please contact them.

  • Arrests Made After Motel Shooting In Northeast Portland – KXL

    PORTLAND, Ore- Three people are under arrest after a late-night shooting at a motel in Northeast Portland that left two adults hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

    Officers from the Portland Police Bureau’s North Precinct responded at about 10:55 p.m. Thursday to reports of a shooting at a motel on Northeast Sandy Boulevard. Inside a room, officers found an adult man and an adult woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

    Both were taken to a hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

    During a search of the surrounding area, officers detained two possible suspects more than 10 blocks away and two additional people near the motel.

    Police ultimately arrested three people and booked them into the Multnomah County Detention Center.

    Aaron T. Gee, 43, of Portland, was arrested on charges of attempted murder in the second degree (two counts), assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

    Joseph E. Allen, 35, of Portland, and Morgan S. Bryden, 29, of Portland, were arrested on outstanding warrants, police said.

    The investigation is ongoing.

  • Raleigh police release autopsy one year after deadly North Hills shooting

    An autopsy report revealed a
    man who was shot and killed at a Raleigh restaurant last year was shot at least
    eight times.

    Police said Jonathan
    Schaffer was shot and killed     at Coquette, by the restaurant’s head chef,
    George Colom Jr., in North Hills, in January 2025.

    According to police, Colom
    came to work on Jan. 17, 2025    , with a gun and shot two coworkers before
    killing himself as the restaurant prepared to open.

    Police said Schaffer died at
    the scene. The other employee who was shot was taken to the hospital with minor
    injuries.

    Police have still not released
    a motive in that shooting.

    One
    year since the deadly shooting    , owner Kevin Jennings said the restaurant has
    struggled financially, noting that business is down 25%. However, he said any
    hardship they face pales in comparison to what Schaffer’s family has
    endured.

    “It’s difficult in sales,
    staffing, that kind of thing,” Jennings told WRAL News. “But
    ultimately Jonathan’s family paid the ultimate price.”

    Jennings said the restaurant also
    scratched the menu completely following the shooting, adding the kitchen refused
    to cook Colom’s food.

    Jennings said that while the
    shooting presented many challenges for the restaurant, it also showed them how
    many supporters they have, and he is optimistic about the restaurant’s future.

  • Evergreen High School shooter used family heirloom gun; parents won’t be charged

    The gun used by the 16-year-old boy who shot two students and then himself at Evergreen High School in September was a family heirloom, investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

    The Smith and Wesson .38 Special revolver that Desmond Holly used in the Sept. 10 attack originally belonged to one of Desmond’s grandparents, the sheriff’s office found, and was kept in a safe in the family’s home.

    Desmond’s parents will not be criminally charged in connection with the storage of the gun or their son’s access to it, the sheriff’s office concluded.

    Through an attorney, the boy’s parents told investigators on Jan. 23 that the revolver was “rarely seen or used and stored out of sight near the back of a large, locked gun safe,” and that their son “did not have access to the safe, except for brief moments when it was opened by his father,” according to a news release announcing the completion of the investigation.

    Douglas Richards, the attorney representing the Evergreen High shooter’s parents, told The Denver Post on Wednesday that he believes Desmond slipped the revolver out of the safe while he was with his father.

    “I believe what happened is Desmond and his father were cleaning some of the family firearms, and in a moment when his father was not looking, Desmond took a firearm from the back of the safe that was an heirloom and had not been used by the family, ever,” Richards said. “Because the firearm was never used and was not stored with other firearms in the safe, its disappearance was not noticed until after the tragedy.”

    The parents’ DNA was not found on the weapon, which was originally purchased in Florida in 1966.

    Richards called the decision not to charge the parents “correct.”

    The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged, in its announcement, “that this was not the outcome many in our community hoped for.”

    An email sent to Evergreen High families Wednesday, alerting them to the sheriff’s completed investigation, said victim advocates would be on campus Thursday alongside the school’s mental health and counseling teams.

    Sheriff’s officials noted in their news release that investigators were “unable to speak with” Desmond’s parents and implied the family was uncooperative during the probe into the revolver’s origins.

    But Richards said Desmond’s parents spoke with investigators at the hospital as their son was dying and answered written questions and follow-up questions from investigators. Richards said he also offered to sit down with investigators to explain how the gun was stored.

    “I have… explained from the outset that the firearm in this case was stolen without the knowledge of Desmond’s parents,” Richards said. “…We have cooperated at every single turn, and it was only earlier this (year) that on my own I decided to just send the DA’s office a letter explaining what occurred, which obviously satisfied them that what we had been saying all along was true — that this was a terrible tragedy that was not foreseeable by anyone in Desmond’s family.”

    Desmond died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the end of his attack on the high school.

    He roamed the halls for about nine minutes and shot in several areas before leaving the building. Desmond wounded a 14-year-old boy who was not publicly identified and 18-year-old Matthew Silverstone; both were seriously injured but survived. Video of the attack shows that Desmond physically grappled with Silverstone before shooting him.
