Flat Footwear Is the Moment—32 Pairs to Live Your Life in This Winter

When even my friends who truly thrive in stilettos are dabbling in loafers, I know I can safely report that there’s really something to this flat-footwear trend. As someone who has never shied away from avoiding heels, I couldn’t be more thrilled. Although, it’s somewhat cruel that the internet is suddenly providing all the flat shoes my heart could ever desire right when I’ve finally taken it upon myself to cull my footwear down to just a handful of perfect styles.

Even if you can’t imagine your work wardrobe sans heels, allow me to introduce you to some flat footwear that will keep things chic on your winter commute. From Mary Janes to ballet flats, loafers to slingbacks, metallic styles to sneakers, these 32 pairs just might make you think twice about stealthily changing out of them under your desk.

  • Hello, Boots Season—5 Trends We’re Investing In and 5 We’re Retiring

Hello, Boots Season—5 Trends We’re Investing In and 5 We’re Retiring

Welcome to boots season! Over the past few months, we’ve made predictions based on the fall and winter trends we’d want to wear and planned out the outfit combinations we’d be trying. But now that we’re well acquainted with our cold-weather wardrobes, we have to admit that, well, we’ve been playing favorites. Of all the boot trends on deck this season, each of our editors has cherry-picked the styles that speak to them the most and have been prioritizing those top picks. The change in seasons comes hand in hand with our desire for a wardrobe refresh—starting with a winter-boot upgrade.

To find out what we’ll actually be wearing throughout the winter, we discussed the winter boot trends we’re phasing out due to their somewhat outdated nature. Chunky lug-sole boots aren’t making the cut this season for these editors, but instead, many of us are leaning toward sleek stiletto and riding boot styles this season. Keep scrolling to uncover the boots—from the 2023 update to shearling boots (yep, they’re back) to cool moto boots—we’re considering to inspire your next winter shopping haul.

  • The 7 Biggest 2023 Winter Shoe Trends—Period

    The 7 Biggest 2023 Winter Shoe Trends—Period

We’ve been tracking the biggest shoe trends of 2023 closely. On the spring/summer 2023 runways, we saw the rise of balletcore and all things pretty and the return of pumps and cool Mary Janes. On the fall/winter 2023 runways, red took over, pointed heels made a huge impact, faux fur was a talking point, and embellishments added an undeniable editorial element to the shoe sphere.

Now that winter 2023 has arrived, we are seeing shoe trends take yet another direction as recent styles are dropping on the market. While many of these trends are an evolution of the styles we have been tracking all year, there are also some new players in the space. Patent leather is picking up even more momentum, ’90s-inspired styles show signs that the emphasis on minimalism from the decade isn’t slowing down, and other trends are getting some seasonal updates. Ahead are the most important winter shoe trends to know for 2023.

  • Mark My Words: Anne Hathaway’s Shiny Shoes Are the Next Big Trend

Mark My Words: Anne Hathaway’s Shiny Shoes Are the Next Big Trend

If you’d have asked me at age eight what my favorite pair of shoes was, I’m pretty sure they would’ve been a gleaming pair of patent leather Mary Janes. Thirty years later, that shoe choice would still make perfect sense. As you’re well aware, every fashion trend comes back around, and Anne Hathaway is the latest example of the return of this particular one.

While walking through New York over the weekend, Hathaway paired a long coat and cropped jeans with a pair of patent leather Christian Louboutin loafers. Our editorial team has been buzzing about the return of patent leather pretty much nonstop as of late, and it’s worth mentioning that two of the most important It shoes of the season (Miu Miu’s Kitten Heel Slingback Pumps and Saint Laurent’s Lee Slingback Pumps) are made of patent leather.

Given Anne Hathaway’s current status as one of the most stylish women in Hollywood, I think you can trust her taste on this one. With that, scroll on to shop the season’s best patent leather shoes.

  • Winter’s “Ugliest” Shoe Trend Is Here and TBH You’ll Love or Hate It

Winter’s “Ugliest” Shoe Trend Is Here and TBH You’ll Love or Hate It

It’s been a minute since there’s been a new, significant “ugly” shoe trend on the scene, but that’s set to change this winter. One of the most prominent shoe trends on the F/W 23 runways—which also made multiple appearances on the S/S 24 runways—was furry shoes. And we’re not just talking subtly furry. We’re talking about over-the-top, spot-them-from-a-mile-away furry.

Leading the furry-shoe charge on the F/W 23 runways were Gucci, Stella McCartney, and Givenchy, to name a few. And on the market, you’ll find plenty more furry shoes among the current mix at Loewe, Burberry, Khaite, and Prada. Basically, pretty much every trend-forward luxury brand we have is on board. Once you get a visual, it’ll be easy to see that the somewhat polarizing trend is actually quite chic and will add a fun touch to whatever outfit they’re paired with.

Scroll on to see what all the hype is about (via the runway and the streets) and shop the chicest furry shoes of the season.

  • The Tantalizingly Pretty Shoe Trend Fashion People Are Losing It Over This Fall

The Tantalizingly Pretty Shoe Trend Fashion People Are Losing It Over This Fall

After fashion month, it’s pretty much commonplace that everything floating around the style side of Instagram and TikTok is dangerously pretty. From handbags to jewelry items to dresses, the content that came out of September’s shows and street style is designed to tantalize and make you want to buy things. It’s as simple as that. One thing that no fashion person I’ve met is capable of resisting at the moment is a pair of kitten-heel pumps à la Prada (yes, I’m talking about the Bunny Floras), The Row, and more.

If you somehow haven’t noticed them yet, go back through a few of your favorite fashion people’s Instagram feeds from the last—I don’t know—three months. I guarantee you’ll spot at least one pair of one-inch-tall pumps of some form, whether it’s a super-classic pair like the ones women in the ’50s and ’60s wore with circle skirts and matching opera coats (or was that only in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel?) or modern slingbacks with various embellishments, like tiny crystals, bite-size buckles, and toe rings. Whatever you find, I already know it’ll be gorgeous and impossible to avoid buying. That’s practically a given when it comes to this trend.

Below, shop the shoe style that has every person in fashion searching for whatever’s left in stock in their size.

  • 9 Designer Heels That Are So Hot Right Now

9 Designer Heels That Are So Hot Right Now

When it comes to shoes, flats have occupied a majority of the discourse in fashion this year. That isn’t to say, however, that heels shouldn’t occupy just as much of the conversation. Super high heels have been gaining traction, despite the dominance of flats, but heels of all heights are always a big part of fashion and shopping trends.

Recently, our editors have been discussing some specific styles at length. The ones that have been getting heavy airtime include designs like the Prada floral appliqué pumps that were heavy-hitters at fashion month. The Saint Laurent Lee pumps have also been in high demand and selling out everywhere. In light of the Toryssance, the brand’s pieced slingbacks are a requisite mention—though they are so hot that you’ll be hard-pressed to find them available to order. Ahead, the best designer heels to commit to memory and add to your shopping cart.

  • Beatle Boots Are Back, Baby—Shop My Favorite Pairs for Fall

Beatle Boots Are Back, Baby—Shop My Favorite Pairs for Fall

During the Beatles’ heyday in the 1960s, fans obsessed over not just their music but every element of the boys’ lives: their friendships, their girlfriends, their hair, and yes, their shoes. Dubbed “Beatle boots,” their signature shoes were sleek, low-heeled, black ankle boots.

Now, you might be tempted to say that this style never actually went away, but in recent years the pendulum has swung heavily toward chunky boots, often with lug soles, platforms, and other less-than-subtle traits. Think Olivia Rodrigo’s Dr. Martens. Beatle boots, in contrast, are a study in minimalism. Thankfully for fans of simple dressing, brands have been churning out plenty of Beatle-worthy boots lately. Scroll down to revisit the iconic shoe style and shop modern-day versions for yourself.

  • 7 Things Everyone Is Wearing With Fall’s Biggest Heel Trend

7 Things Everyone Is Wearing With Fall’s Biggest Heel Trend

If you’re team flats and the sound of a heel trend makes you shudder, I have some good news for you. The biggest heel trend of the season is, undoubtedly, kitten heels. Kitten heels are low-heeled shoes that are typically around two inches (give or take), which makes them the most walkable stilettos you can buy.

The elegant heel trend makes whatever you’re wearing look instantly polished (yes, even sweatpants and baggy jeans), but there are certain items people are pairing with kitten heels as of late. These specific items make the old-school shoe style look incredibly fresh. I did my fashion-editor duty and rounded those items up to offer you some fresh styling inspiration for the kitten heels in your life. Scroll on to shop the kitten heel–friendly items along with some of my favorite pairs of low-heeled stilettos on the market.

  • These Ravishing New Jimmy Choo Shoes Are Bound for Sellout Status

These Ravishing New Jimmy Choo Shoes Are Bound for Sellout Status

What’s better than one iconic designer brand? A collaboration between two legendary brands, of course. Jimmy Choo has teamed up with Jean Paul Gaultier on a new line of shoes that are bound to sell out lightning fast. “The collaboration fuses the identities of the two iconic brands—one emblematic of London, the other quintessentially Parisian—and explores the dichotomy between these two geographic and philosophical points,” the press release reads.

“Jean Paul Gaultier is an icon—as a man, and as a brand,” Jimmy Choo creative Director Sandra Choi said in a statement. “I have adored his work for as long as I can remember, and he has inspired me my entire life in fashion. I was honored and incredibly excited to be able to reinterpret his legacy, the meaning of his work, and his world, alongside Florence Tétier through the lens of Jimmy Choo.” Scroll down to shop the stunning new collection.

Stop What You’re Doing—I Found All the Best Styles at Bloomingdale’s Shoe Sale

Attention: Bloomingdale’s is having a shoe sale. • Miu Miu Made Me Do It—30 Mary-Jane Shoes That You Need for Fall

Miu Miu Made Me Do It—30 Mary-Jane Shoes That You Need for Fall

Blame it on Miu Miu, but Mary Janes are basically the shoes of the season. The style is known for its simple closed-toe design and a strap (or more!) that runs across your foot’s instep. For some extra background, the name “Mary Jane” came from a character in a Buster Brown comic in the early 1900s. The Brown Shoe Company named a shoe after the ones she wore, and, well, the rest is history.

While the satin flats from Miu Miu come to mind first, many other designers are going all in on the trend. More brands lending their distinct point of view to the classic include Sandy Liang, Mansur Gavriel, Ganni, Nodaleto, and Prada, to name a couple. Ahead, I’ve rounded up the 27 best Mary Janes in all different silhouettes, from flats and loafers to lug-sole platforms and high heels, so that you can find your dream shoe for fall 2023. • Don’t Sleep on Reformation’s Excellent Shoe Selection—13 Pairs I’m Prioritizing

Don’t Sleep on Reformation’s Excellent Shoe Selection—13 Pairs I’m Prioritizing

Reformation is perhaps best known for its signature floral dresses, but the brand offers so much more than just pretty frocks. Because it’s highly underrated and exceedingly stylish right now.

No matter what shoe style you’re interested in buying for fall, Reformation has an option for you. Trendy styles include mesh ballet flats and moto boots, while more classic silhouettes include sleek ankle boots and slingback heels. • The $99 Nordstrom Boots I’m Buying to Get the Grungy Miu Miu Look on a Budget

The $99 Nordstrom Boots I’m Buying to Get the Grungy Miu Miu Look on a Budget

No single pair of boots has taken up residence in the brains of practically every person in fashion in recent years quite as significantly as Miu Miu’s moto boots, which the brand debuted in its F/W 22 collection. Mixed among penny loafers and the now-viral satin Mary Jane flats were a variety of heavy-duty, distressed leather boots in brown and black with a round toe, an ankle strap secured by large metal fasteners, and buckles up the leg that brought the thick material together on either side. Similar to the other footwear they were accompanied by on the runway, attendees and digital onlookers alike were instantly smitten.

As a result, over the past year, many brands have hopped aboard the moto-boot train, with options arriving from Steve Madden, Mango, and more. But none has gotten me quite as excited as the $99 pair I just discovered on Nordstrom.com. Ankle height, buckled to perfection, and featuring just the right amount of heel, the boots, courtesy of Nordstrom’s in-house, editor-favorite label Open Edit, check off every box. And the price isn’t half bad either. (I’m obviously kidding—the price is the *best* part.) Scroll down to shop Open Edit’s just-in moto boots ahead of fall’s official arrival.

  • You Can’t Wear Flats Everyday—6 Fall Heels Trends to Wear Instead

You Can’t Wear Flats Everyday—6 Fall Heels Trends to Wear Instead

I’ll admit, this phase of everyone trading in their heels for ballet flats, loafers, and retro, viral sneakers has been fun, especially for my feet, both of which are far too used to being squished, squeezed, and smushed into heels and then forced to walk on concrete for miles on end. But, while my feet and I have appreciated the break from elevated footwear, we’ve come to the mutual decision after studying fall’s curation of heels that the time for all flats all the time is over.

From timeless styles like sling-backs and kitten-heel pumps to more experimental alternatives like fur-trimmed sandals and studded mules, the industry’s top shoe designers simply provided one too many covetable choices for anyone to simply ignore in the name of comfort. For proof, scroll through the six heels trends below, all of which I’d gladly sacrifice a touch of flats-induced bliss for (emphasis on the word touch, since even a heels lover like me won’t put up with that much pain for fashion). My guess? After one swipe, your flats will be on a one-way trip to the storage unit.

  • The Only Flat Shoe That Matters If You Want to Look Chic This Fall

The Only Flat Shoe That Matters If You Want to Look Chic This Fall

To test how big a fashion trend is, I assess how prevalent it is both on people and in stores. Do I see it worn often online or on the streets? Can I buy it easily and at all price points? Then, there are my personal litmus tests for whether I’d like to dip my toes in. Is it cute? Is it comfortable?

Well, folks, I’m here to tell you that today’s shoe trend not only passed every one of the above with flying colors but its positive attributes expand from there. The Mary Jane flat isn’t just cute and accessible. (For reference, though, Nordstrom has a whole section devoted to them right now.) It’s sleek, functional, and simultaneously a very classic choice you can hold on to for years and years to come. Yes, it’s particularly “cool” right now, but to me, the best trends are ones that are rooted in simplicity. The Mary Jane will function more like a basic for your fall and winter wardrobe, and I think it’s just the upgrade we all need.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding. Aside from my chic colleague Anna’s outfit above, continue on for seven more snaps featuring this of-the-moment trend along with some of my favorite options to buy right now ranging from $50 to $500-plus.
