Soundcheck Recap: Shawn Mendes, Halsey, And More!

    [ad_1]

Blotched with pink and white swirls, slapped with a plane sticker, or—if you’re one of those minimalist types—just a classic sky blue, what most would call ‘travel luggage,’ we true fans know as ‘concert time!’ It’s our one foolproof excuse to drop everything, pack up, and spend a few glorious days watching our faves flounce on stage. That’s why we become the frazzled Gollum upon collecting even more digital tickets, snarling “my precious” whenever we join the headache-inducing queue. Luckily for you, we’re about to give you even more chances to experience live music with a series called Soundcheck Recap! We’ll review the latest touring news each week, recount the best moments, and show you how to make your ticket list scroll for days.

    Busted Vs. McFly

It’s the ultimate toss-up of the boy bands, or if you’re more of a lover than a fighter, you’re probably cheesing at seeing all of them on stage together. Just imagine the shenanigans! In a moment we captured, Busted and McFly announced that they would travel around Europe together late next year. The tour will begin in Birmingham and then wrap up in Belfast, and though the general sale kicked off on the 18th, the ticketing gods have still favored latecomers by having plenty still available.

    Shawn Mendes

Where thou art, Shawny boy? It turns out that despite the album release—that doesn’t take a liking to our nickname for him but just his first name itself—moving from October 18th to November 15th, it’s still rolling out with a bang. One that features an extreme screen, popcorn brewing until our fingers taste buttery. Shawn Mendes: For Friends And Family Only (A Live Concert Film) will appear at selected worldwide cinemas just one day before the album comes out, so November 14 for those who aren’t human calculators. The exact locations and ways to purchase tickets will shuffle out at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET on October 24.

    Shakira

‘Whenever, Wherever’ may just have to be the answer for American fans when it comes to Shakira’s shaking hips as she’s upgraded those dates to full-on stadiums! We should’ve known that was coming, as she’s been a titan lately, stealing Taylor Swift’s lucky number 13 and making it her own by selling out that amount of stadiums for her international leg in under two hours. Woah, wiping sweats off our brows and still not being able to think about anything as prestigious as we can do in that time frame. Next year is shaping up to be her year with the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour!

    Carrie Underwood

Las Vegas is the likely place to see someone slash their cheating exes tiers, so it’s a good fortune that Carrie Underwood has been there singing such sassy tunes for her REFLECTION residency. However, soon enough, they will have to find another singer to give them that pep talk as its final dates have been announced. The residency will wrap up on April 12th. Tickets for these final dates also went on sale on Friday, but as always, there are still a few to choose from, so it’s better to be late but not wholly late.

Well, now we’re just kicking our feet, wishing we were a Wells Fargo Autograph Credit holder. You’re one? That’s super lucky because Halsey’s doing an intimate event at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom on November 21st, no doubt in celebration of their upcoming album, The Great Impersonator. Shuffle your fortune-telling cards and see if they decipher if you’ll land tickets in their remaining sale on October 24th at 10 a.m. PT.

  • I Miss The Old VMA’s

    I Miss The Old VMA’s

    [ad_1]

MTV’s Video Music Awards used to
mean something. They’d be riddled with scandal, big performances, and newsworthy moments throughout. Last year, they even gave me a glimmer of hope that maybe the VMA’s would once again become iconic. Last night, they proved otherwise.

Riddled with random performances, there were hardly any awards handed out on-stage last night. We only got a few words from Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift while the rest were quietly awarded off-camera. Lip-syncing left and right, an extra-long performance from Katy Perry, who was the recipient of the Vanguard Award, and random quips from host Megan Thee Stallion fell flat.

@thesun What did you think of the performance? #sabrinacarpenter #vmas #mtv ♬ original sound – The Sun

The VMA’s used to mean something. There once was drama, huge career-defining performances, and huge attendance from every artist in the industry. It was less formal than The Grammy’s, a little more MTV…raunchy, scandalous, and
    great television.

@only_angel.a taylor mouthing “stfu” when one direction was accepting their award, harry eating an orange behind rihanna, miley’s whole performance (which harry later went on to dress as for halloween)… I remember it all too well #taylorswift #harrystyles #vmas #harrystylestitkok #taylorswifttikok ♬ I Knew You Were Trouble (Taylor’s Version) – Taylor Swift

What happened to Taylor Swift doing a British accent in front of ex-boyfriend Harry Styles while singing “We Are Never (Ever) Getting Back Together?” Or Kanye West interrupting Swift as she accepted the award for Best Video? Or Miley Cyrus twerking with teddy bears and Robin Thicke?

    @tanaslaughter Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs #kanyewest #taylorswift #popculture #2000s ♬ som original – tana

Performances used to take our breath away: Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” changed lives, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, and more have had massive moments at the VMA’s. This year, we saw terrific performances from the aforementioned Carpenter and Roan…but the rest I will soon forget.

    @lilly.hailey.lee Talent👏👏 #ladygaga #hollywood #vmas #preformance #talent #fame #thefame #american #fyp #viral #paparazzi #2000s #hollywoodmusic #music ♬ original sound – Lady Gaga is your queen

What we wanted, however, was a jaw-dropping moment. And yes, I saw Sabrina Carpenter make out with the alien. I’m talking about a headline worthy moment, like Miley stripping her Disney princess status for edgy popstar or Kanye completely stealing Taylor’s moment.

Either way, I’m left yearning for drama. The VMA’s were never supposed to be taken seriously- they were meant to show which celebs hated each other, which wanted to ruin their careers, and which were just bystanders.

This year was an hours-long concert medley including the Sabrina-Shawn Mendes-Camila Cabello love triangle…and yet, the cameramen gave us no dramatic cuts to Shawn or Camila while Sabrina sang a song about them. See what I mean? Where’s the
    drama???

What made the VMA’s truly great was the fact that they weren’t trying to be serious. They let the artists get drunk and talk shit on one another, and that was okay. Now, we’ve lost the plot and it sadly shows.

  • The Fight For Shawn Mendes: Sabrina Carpenter vs. Camila Cabello

The Fight For Shawn Mendes: Sabrina Carpenter vs. Camila Cabello

    [ad_1]

There are only a few guarantees in life: death, taxes, and women fighting over the same man. In terms of celebrity drama, the public has always loved pitting women against one another, especially in relationships. Take
Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter over Joshua Bassett, Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez over Justin, and most recently, Carpenter and Camila Cabello over Shawn Mendes.

    When
Sabrina Carpenter’s highly anticipated latest album, Short n’ Sweet, debuted on August 23, fans tuned in. It was everything we expected: witty beyond imagination, an upgrade to her Pop Princess status, packed with songs of the summer and catchy throughout. But what we never expected were the songs taking obvious digs at Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.

To be honest, I didn’t even know
Carpenter dated Mendes…and that’s on me for being a casual fan. But the proof is in the pudding, Carpenter and Mendes were spotted countless times last year on celebrity gossip page, Deuxmoi. The pair were flirting outrageously on Instagram. And then he was back with Camila.

And that was it for a lot of us. We didn’t think twice as Mendes and Cabello cozily sidled up to one another, we just let them return to being the weird couple they always were. Then Sabrina started dating
Saltburnstar Barry Keoghan and we focused on the short stack duo.

But now, we had to go back in the archives thanks to
Short n’ Sweet. Songs like Dumb & Poetic take obvious shots at Mendes, Sharpest Tool jabs at Cabello and so does Coincidence. The picture Carpenter has painted isn’t good, and Cabello has even taken a few swings in her own music.

So if you’re just as lost on the Carpenter-Cabello-Mendes love triangle…you won’t be for long. Here’s the story of how Camila Cabello potentially stole Shawn Mendes back from Sabrina.

Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter Relationship Timeline

    We all know how
Cabello was with Shawn Mendes first. After two years together, the pair broke up in 2021. Then, after they were seen kissing at Coachella 2023, rumors were rampant about a reunion. Two months later, they called it quits again.

But in the midst of it all comes Sabrina Carpenter. In what seemed like a quick whirlwind, Shawn and Sabrina quietly launched their flirtation on Instagram in December 2022. Mendes posted an Instagram where Carpenter commented, “was it cold tho.”

By January 2023, more dating rumors swirled as Mendes was spotted in Paris and for absolutely no reason. While that may seem like nothing, Carpenter posts from the same 5-Star, Luxury
Costes Hotel in Paris a week later. Now that’s suspicious.

    In February 2023,
Deuxmoi has a sighting of Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter “on clearly a date.” The anonymous tip came with the description of Carpenter wearing a brown mini skirt and Mendes with a freshly shaved head.

Screenshot of Deuxmoi post r/Fauxmoi on reddit

Close to a week later, they are finally photographed in Los Angeles where
People reports Carpenter is clearly wearing Shawn’s hoodie.

    Enter Camila Cabello.

Fans began to notice how Camila Cabello was interacting more with Sabrina Carpenter posts on Instagram…even liking her BBC Radio 1 performance of Carpenter’s “Late Night Talking” cover. Screenshots have surfaced of Cabello liking countless Carpenter-related posts from around the time Mendes and Carpenter went public.

    By March 13, 2023,
ET reported that Sabrina Carpenter and Shawn Mendes were dating but “trying to keep things low-key.” Somehow, this news got broken by The Cancelled Podcast.

This doesn’t last long, however, because Carpenter and Mendes split up sometime between March and April of 2023…and then he’s seen in April with Cabello.

While there are two sides (or, I guess three in this case?) to every story, all signs point to Cabello swooping in on Mendes immediately after (if not
    during) his relationship with Carpenter.

And now, fans have noticed that one of Camila’s songs from her new album,
C,XOXO, “June Gloom” is also about the situation. With lyrics like “If she’s so amazing why are you on this side of town?” and “We’re a house fire for sure/Hope it’ll burn out but it just gets bigger,” are potential nods to her rekindling things with Mendes.

In a recent TikTok, Cabello even posts herself singing along to “June Gloom” which social media users are taking as her official admission to the beef.

@camilacabello hope it’ll burn out but it just gets bigger 🙄
♬ June Gloom – Camila Cabello

Not only that, but Cabello and Carpenter don’t follow one another on Instagram. Which could mean nothing, considering they have shown a lot of support for one another in the past publicly. Either way, the situation is intriguing.

Wait…So Who Is Shawn Mendes Dating Now?

    While
Cabello and Mendes split two months after the Coachella sightings, it appears that they may be back together again. It seems like old habits die hard with these two (remember those slow walks they did during COVID?)

Cabello and Mendes were seen at the Copa America final on July 14 this year, where Argentina played Colombia. Not only that, but Mendes has also been liking Cabello’s Instagram posts. But, you never know.

Songs on Short n’ Sweet about Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

Now that you’re all caught up on the drama and fully-invested…you’ll probably want to go back and listen to
Short n’ Sweet! And since about half the album revolves around this love triangle, let’s break down which song is about who!

    “Taste”

“Heard you’re back together, and if that’s true/ you’ll just have to taste me while he’s kissing you” sings the chorus of this song. If you need me to spell it out for you, this is clearly about Camila Cabello.

    “Coincidence”

Ohhh boy, does this tell the entire story. Lyrics include “Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs/Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side?” and “Trying to turn past into the present tense”, it’s clear who this is about. And Carpenter adds she’s not shocked they broke up again.

    “Dumb & Poetic”

This is for you, Shawn Mendes. Notable lines include “Just because you talk like one, doesn’t make you a man,” “save all your breath for your floor meditation,” “you’d make a great wife/And I promise you those mushrooms aren’t changing your life,” Carpenter rips into Mendes…and this one is obvious.

    Potential Songs About Mendes

While Mendes certainly isn’t the only sinner in Carpenter’s stories, there are a few questionable songs where it could be about her other exes. Songs like “Sharpest Tool” refer to finding God at his exes house, which could be a reference to either Mendes or Joshua Bassett.

There’s also a general warning to men, “Lie To Girls,” where she promises you don’t have to lie to a woman to get you to like them…they’ll lie to themselves and make excuses for you if they like you.

Finally there’s the breakup anthem that closes the ironically short and sweet album, “Don’t Smile,” where Carpenter begs her ex to cry that it ended…not smile because it happened. Again, could be a nod to Shawn Mendes and her wanting him to repent.

Regardless, this drama has been fun…and with
Short n’ Sweet potentially gearing up for a #1 Billboard Hot 100 chart spot, Carpenter comes out on top.

  • Will Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo Work It Out on the Remix?

Will Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo Work It Out on the Remix?

    [ad_1]

We’re in the best of times (brat summer), but we’re also in the worst of times (constantly fielding articles by Some Guy about how brat summer is dead). But how could brat summer be over if I feel it in my heart? If they’re still playing “Guess ft. Billie Eilish” at Tenants of the Trees in LA (where Charli XCX herself had her birthday party for some reason)? And if the impact of brat summer is still causing ripples through the culture it cannot be over.

No, I’m not talking about Kamala’s brat green rebrand. I’m talking about something more substantial — the very same thing that had last summer in the same chokehold: the infectious and irresistible power of girlhood.

Last summer caused a vibe shift. Culture started catering to women. Let’s be real: Women have been the drivers of pop culture for a long time. I, for one, will never forget that artists like The Beatles and Elvis, who are still taken seriously as iconic musical artists today, caused fanatical frenzies, not unlike artists like Justin Bieber and One Direction. Yet, despite our clear good taste, women have historically been written off as fickle while culture catered to men.

Just think of how the 2000s were defined by blockbuster summer movies. Usually, an action movie would dominate, followed by a “chick flick” that was relegated to date nights or the whims of teenage girls. Yet, when
Barbenheimer resurrected this dynamic, one had a clear chokehold on the internet and the world. And since I haven’t seen Oppenheimener-flavored Olipops, no prizes for guessing which one it was.

This summer isn’t defined by movies (Twisters and It Ends With Us aren’t the Barbenheimer redux we wanted) it’s characterized by music. And while the guys gave it the old college try — Kendrick did release the ultimate hater anthem with Not Like Us in the Spring — the girls take it yet again.

And despite seasonal albums from established pop stars like
Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande, queer (or queer-coded) female artists have blown up this summer. All of them have also been grafting behind the scenes for years before finally getting their flowers. But now the world is listening. We’re learning. And we’re obsessed.

Of course, there’s the princess of the summer,
Sabrina Carpenter, who is the latest Disney veteran to make it big. We’ll get to her Disney drama later, but this summer, it’s all about our Short n Sweet queen’s infectious earworms. We called it earlier this year: she is the moment. Her rise to fame has been inevitable.

Then there’s the surprise star of the year,
Chappell Roan. So glad bisexual women decided not to gatekeep this absolute star. The fact that I’ve been listening to Chappell since 2020 and I’m still not tired of “Pink Pony Club” says a lot.

    But
Charli XCX’s mainstream moment is arguably the most surprising. Charli is a giant to music lovers and, of course, the queer community. A real dyed-in-the-wool party girl, she grew up in the clubs and doesn’t just talk the talk, she throws the parties. Despite her collaborations with literally everyone, her Grammys, and her hits, Charli XCX is only now becoming a household name. Why? Because we’re finally ready for her.

Girlhood is brat. Brat is girlhood. Girl, it’s so confusing, but it’s about being a girl

Girlhood is the name of the game and Charli writes for the girls and the gays. Her album speaks to the desire to hold on to the feeling of youth juxtaposed with the realities of growing up. Who can’t relate? She talks about themes integral to girlhood: going on vacation and thinking it will change your life, going to a party and thinking it will change your life, and having dinner with a girl and thinking she hates you.

    @thepopupdates The best duo everrrr #charlixcx #lorde #girlsoconfusing #brat #popmusic #music #foryou #foryoupage #fyp #viral ♬ original sound – Pop Throwbacks & Updates

The latter was the impetus for the internet-breaking track “The girl, so confusing version with lorde.” After Charli released the original version of “girl, so confusing,” the internet rightly assumed it was about her years-long pseudo-beef with
Lorde. Lyrics like: “I’m all about throwing parties / You’re all about writing poems,” and “People say we’re alike, they say we’ve got the same hair,” added fuel to the fire of their reported feud. So imagine our surprise when Charli released a version with Lorde herself. Like Miss Ella, honestly, we were speechless.

Lorde knew what she was doing when she said: “When we put this to bed, the internet will go crazy.” Sure enough, the internet erupted. And it did the same once again when footage was released of the two scream-singing their instant classic of a collab at Charli’s birthday party. What a way to put the feud rumors to bed.

Will Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo work it out on the remix?

    @ce__1l girl girl 💚 // #ce__1l #fyp #foryoupage #lyricsvideo #music #sabrinacarpenter #oliviarodrigo #brat ♬ Girl, so confusing featuring lorde – Charli xcx & Lorde

After Lorde and Charli worked out their decade of competition over a Jack Antonoff beat, the internet speculated: who would be next to quell their beef with the power of song? If it seems like the plot of a Disney movie, get in for the ride — the Disney of it all has just begun.

A few weeks ago, sources reported that former Disney stars turned stadium-selling pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter might be collaborating on a song. With the upcoming release of Carpenter’s highly anticipated album sneaking up on us, fans speculate that this could be a surprise track waiting on the record.

If you don’t understand how earth-shattering this is, let me take you back to 2021, when
Olivia Rodrigo first took the world by storm with her song “drivers license.” The song, and subsequent album, chronicled her heartbreak about how her costar and ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett left her for “that blonde girl.” The blonde in question? Sabrina Carpenter.

That’s right. Our very own me espresso was the villain in
the “drivers license” saga. And you mean to tell me the two of them have put their boy drama aside to collaborate? Please, please, please tell me if this is true. If it is, I’ll be sat watching it unfold. As if I needed another reason to eagerly await the release of Short N Sweet.

In the meantime, I’m making a list and checking it twice about all the other celebs I want to see quell their beef. And yes, the list gets more and more unhinged as you go down, tis the summer of collabs. And our favorite artists are proving that magic can be made if they do it together. Billie and Charli did it. Kendrick and the entire rap community did it. Who is next?

    @kittywaless their lore😍 (pls keep the comments respectful) #catherineprincessofwales #princessofwales #princesscatherine #princesskate #catherinemiddleton #katemiddleton #duchessofcambridge #brat #girlsoconfusing #britishroyalfamily ♬ Girl, so confusing featuring lorde – Charli xcx & Lorde

People we want to see work it out on the remix:

    One Direction

This is my ultimate dream. The
Paris Olympics may have made you fantasize about what life would be like if you hadn’t quit JV basketball, but it made me dream about seeing my beloved One Direction again. After all, I can’t watch an opening ceremony without thinking about their performance at the 2012 London Games. Stranger things have happened than a boyband reuniting. The second they announce a tour, I’m quitting my job and dedicating my life to following them around on tour. Hold me to that.

    Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan

The Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo feud is the closest our generation will ever get to experiencing the magnitude of drama caused by Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff. As the two defining Disney sensations turned movie stars of their time, Duff and Lohan were pitted against each other by the media. Everybody knew it: the two were rivals in their careers and in their relationships. We’ll never experience that kind of TMZ-stoked animosity again. But we’re older now. Duff and Lohan are both in new phases of their careers. If they worked it, the (millennial side of the) internet really would go crazy.

    Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber

These two divas have been competing to be the prince of pop for years. And their silent feud runs deep. In a radio interview at the beginning of Shawn’s career, Justin responded to a question about the other Canadian crooner with the dismissive and deadly, “who’s Shawn Mendes?” Then, after Mendes appeared with Hailey Baldwin at the Met Gala in 2018, Bieber quickly reignited his relationship with our favorite nepo baby and married her. Talk about winning the battle. The two already have a song together, “
Monster,” but no one is buying that they’ve really worked it out. I want to see Shawn at Justin and Hailey’s baby shower or bust.

    Justin Bieber and Harry Styles

Speaking of pop feuds, Bieber and Styles have been toeing a tension-laden line since 2012. Rumors swirled that One Direction was supposed to open for Bieber on his
Believe tour but the plans were canceled — and dreams died. Reasons abound as to why but I suppose we’ll never know. As someone who attended that Believe tour, I have been waiting for them to work it out on the remix ever since.

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers

Other feuds from my childhood I want fixed: the Disney Channel stars involved in the seminal sustainability single, “Send It On.” That was our Fleetwood Mac
Rumors. With loyalties crossed, relationships breaking friendships, and a whole lot of teen angst going on, the Disney Channel producers had one song and one song only to change lives. While we were watching “Send It On” play during Disney breaks, we had no clue about the drama simmering beneath the surface. But imagine if they put that to bed? The internet would go crazy.

    Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift

Of all of Taylor’s exes, she’s clearly already worked it out with Taylor Lautner — who was backflipping across her Eras tour stages for a brief stint last summer. But the reconciliation I really want is between Taylor and Joe. Sure, she’s written some scathing songs about him. And she told the world on
Ellen that he broke up with her in 17 seconds. And she’s befriended Sophie Turner. But for a brief moment, Taylor made up with Kanye West, so stranger things have happened. Can you imagine a mashup between “SOS” by The Jonas Brothers and “The Story of US” by Taylor Swift? My Spotify Wrapped would become unshareable.

    Katy Perry and Taylor Swift

Though allegedly this feud started due to the backup dancers, Perry has become one of
Swift’s famed list of enemies. And as the queen of “Karma,” Swifties know that all of Taylor’s adversaries never fare well — just look at Ye or Scooter Braun. Katy Perry’s comeback might be another one of these casualties. Ouch. If the two managed to reconcile their “Bad Blood,” imagine the album Katy Perry would create.

    Nelly Furtado and Fergie

    Remember the song “
Give It To Me” by Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, and Justin Timberlake? Thanks to TikTok, the song experienced a recent resurgence. But did you know the entire song is a diss track? Justin Timberlake’s verse is about Prince (more insane than “what tour? The world tour”), Timbaland’s verse is about Scott Storch, and Nelly Furtado’s verse is about Fergie. But what if we stopped pitting two pop icons against each other and instead begged them both to have a comeback … together?

    The Don’t Worry Darling Cast

    The
Don’t Worry Darling press tour pitted all our favorite stars against each other in the public arena: Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pine, and Gemma Chan. And while that trainwreck of a movie doesn’t need a sequel, I would animatedly watch one just to keep keen eyes on the press tour.

The It Ends With Us Cast

If we thought there would never be another press tour as dramatic as
Don’t Worry Darling, Justin Baldoni of the It Ends With Us cast just hired Johnny Depp’s lawyer — so it’s inarguably surpassed its dramatic predecessor. With Blake Lively and Baldoni both waging a press war, some are hoping It Ends With Us will just … end. But I need a little entertainment to tide me over into fall. And if the movie itself won’t provide it, the hope of a last-gasp reconciliation might.

    Kendrick Lamar and Drake

I know this will never happen. In fact, if it did, I’d
lose some respect for Kendrick, honestly. But sometimes I like to imagine that all of this was just marketing for a joint album a la “Watch the Throne.”

  • An Exclusive Interview With Toddy Smith

An Exclusive Interview With Toddy Smith

    [ad_1]

When Toddy Smith enters the Zoom call, he’s immediately warm and friendly…a good sign for an interviewer when you instantly feel comfortable with them. We dive straight into his start on Vine, the OG video-sharing app that launched careers for stars like himself, Shawn Mendes, and many more. In Toddy’s case, he began making Vines with friend, fellow songwriter, and vlogger Scott Sire.

Sire’s Vine fame arose while Toddy was off filming a reality dating show called Sweet Home Alabama. He made it to the top 3 and came back to see that Scott had summated an impressive 25,000 followers. He doesn’t take credit for any Vine fame- calling himself the sidekick to Scott, Zane Hijazi, and Heath Hussar’s videos.

Through making these videos on Vine alongside Scott Sire, Toddy met his other best friends Zane and Heath amongst other Vine and YouTube creators along the way. But while he was joining the Vlog Squad on YouTube and becoming the massive Internet personality he is, there was always music in his mind.

He tells me how he always admired 21 Pilots and enjoyed writing short stories, finding that lead singer Tyler Joseph matched his writing energy. The similarities and inspiration he drew from the band that gave us songs like “Heathens” and “Stressed Out” pushed him to start creating his own music as a hobby.

Since he had no instrument, he moved to Los Angeles, hired Jason Nash’s children’s piano teacher, and launched from there. The rest of the pieces fell into place from there- Scott Sire invited Toddy out on tour with him to play the keyboard. It’s something he describes as a “dream come true” to play onstage, and the music became more than just a hobby.

His first song was “Natalina”, a synth-y, pop-indie sound that he went into writing with the idea already formed, so it felt easier for him to write. And while songwriting didn’t come as easily then, he feels much more confident with every song he puts out – honing into his craft, developing his sound, and seeing what works for him.

With songs like “Past Life”, his collaboration with Scott Sire, he was able to have a blast creating a track he loved. Nick Anderson, lead singer of The Wrecks, helped create the track with the duo- which came to fruition based on his relationship. He was inspired by M83 at the time and The Drive soundtrack- but perhaps the most interesting part is that the song is unfinished, but they liked how it sounded as it was.

“I set up that session and I had a few keywords ready to go…Nick Anderson is one of the best producers and the best people I know. He really helped bring that song alive…We were just sitting there all three of us kind of throwing words around, but when we sat down that night it wasn’t finished and we just liked how it sounded. It’s a bit of a weird structure, but Nick’s verse just brings it all together.”

Alongside 21 Pilots, Toddy grew up with a lot of punk-rock influence like Green Day, Blink-182, The Circle Jerks. The early 2000s were a great time for angst, which is when he grew up. However, his music takes on a more 80’s synth pop sound that makes you want to dance around and be carefree. It’s a sign he’s staying true to himself…after he admits he tried to replicate the 21 Pilots sound, it felt better to make music that worked for him.

It takes us to his most recent release, “Started As A Joke”, which actually is the second song he wrote after “Natalina”, about the beginning of relationships. “Started As A Joke” is classic Toddy Smith- fun-loving, introspective, and a bit self-deprecating in all the right ways. It takes listeners through two people falling in love when it started originally as a joke for one of them. You can listen to the song here:

Toddy makes music in a way that everyone can respect: only releasing songs that feel right, staying true to lyrics and melody without overdoing it, and never pushing something that isn’t serving him. He’s the type of person who is always writing- whether it be music or a short story, which he admits he prefers a little more because he can just write anything that comes to mind with no thoughts of melody or diction or style.

Right now, he’s back working with Nick Anderson of The Wrecks to challenge himself by turning a short story into a song. While it’s unfinished currently, they have a melody and are working backwards with the lyrics and the story. Constantly working, Smith admits a new single also is on its way in the beginning of 2024.

However, as a content creator to his core, Toddy is always looking at different creative outlets. He enjoys making short films and skits, remaining active across social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to develop his filmmaking and music. While it may look like a relatively quiet period, you can tell that Toddy is genuinely proud of the work he’s putting out.

Alongside all of his accolades, Toddy also founded clothing brand GothicMochas which turns basics like trucker hats and oversized hoodies into a fashion statement of their own. It’s his way of staying true to his own fashion sense while making high quality, cutting edge clothes…and it works.

It’s a dream of his to go back out onstage, but he doesn’t currently have shows lined up. For now, it’s about the music, his stories, and the films, and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

  • An Overview of Shawn Mendes’s Dating History, From Hailey Bieber to Camila Cabello

An Overview of Shawn Mendes’s Dating History, From Hailey Bieber to Camila Cabello

    [ad_1]

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello first went public with their romance in 2019, and spent the next few years collaborating on music and taking strolls together. They broke up in November 2021, and though the pair appeared to reunite this spring, it seems like they’ve officially gone their separate ways once more.

At least as of June, Mendes seems to be focused on working on himself instead of pursuing a new relationship. “Shawn is still growing and discovering himself. He needs time to himself to do what makes him happy,” a source told People on June 14. “He has a lot more living and learning in his future.”

Mendes and Cabello seemingly struck up a romance after being friends for years and working together on their hit “Señorita.” Before Cabello, though, Mendes was famously quiet about his dating history, preferring to keep his romantic life private — though he did admit to having a fling with Hailey Bieber. More recently, he was linked to Sabrina Carpenter after the pair attended Miley Cyrus’s album release party together on March 9, per People, but he later shut down those rumors. “We are not dating,” he told RTL Boulevard later that month while promoting a collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. “But I think we should talk about Tommy Hilfiger probably more than Sabrina. But thank you.”

Ahead, check out the women Mendes has been linked to over the years.

  • Did Shawn Mendes hint at Camila Cabello with ‘What The Hell Are We Dying For’ lyrics? Here’s what we know

Did Shawn Mendes hint at Camila Cabello with ‘What The Hell Are We Dying For’ lyrics? Here’s what we know

    [ad_1]

Shawn Mendes just released a song titled What the Hell Are We Dying For? out of the blue on June 9, 2023, much to the disbelief and joy of fans. Netizens were quick to question the lyrics, especially when they seemed to hint at singer Camila Cabello. Keep reading to know what the fans think the song is about and what the lyrics to the recently released track are.

Did Shawn Mendes hint at Camila Cabello with ‘What The Hell Are We Dying For’ lyrics?

Mendes announced the release of the new song with the caption, “Started writing this song yesterday morning with my friends in upstate New York & finished it only a few hours ago.. felt important to me to share with you guys in real-time,” He teased the song a day before its release with its title written on a picture of the Manhattan skyline full of smoke amidst the growing Canadian wildfires. The musician has faced backlash for the same.

Netizens slammed Mendes for using the natural disaster that is affecting numerous people to promote his music. While the song directly refers to the wildfires with the lyrics “Smoke in the air, the city’s burnin’ down,” it also refers to his feelings for someone he loves and can’t stop thinking about. Fans are sure the song is about Cabello, especially because Mendes has previously accepted that all the love songs he has written have been about the 26-year-old Havana hitmaker.

What the Hell Are We Dying For? further says, “Locked in my mind, you’re all I think about / I wanna save us, but I don’t know how.” Mendes sings, “If we don’t love like we used to / If we don’t care like we used to / What the hell are we dying for?” The lyrics continue, “If it doesn’t cut like it used to / If you’re not mine and I’m not yours / What the hell are we dying for?” The song reveals how the Stitches hitmaker tries to let “her” go but then changes his mind.

“Livin’ without you / Is not livin’ at all,” the song concludes. The soon-to-be 25-year-old and Cabello dated for two years before splitting in November 2021. The two reconciled this year and were spotted kissing at the Coachella music festival in April. They have been spotted out and about as well as on dates ever since. Despite recent reports that claim they have broken up again, there seems to be no confirmation about the same. The much-loved couple have previously posted pictures of their time together and the fans have enjoyed every bit of it.

“I’ve learned a lot about love with this guy. It’s not just the happy blissful moments you see in pictures and videos. When you’re in a relationship with someone, it feels like they are this mirror reflecting yourself back to you,” a post from Cabello reads. “To be in love means to choose that person over and over again, to go through the messy stuff with. And that’s way more beautiful and raw and real than perfection,” a picture of her kissing Mendes says.

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music Released Today

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music Released Today

    [ad_1]

What I love about Fridays isn’t that I get to log off work early (well, maybe a little) or that I have an excuse to attend happy hour…it’s that I’m guaranteed new music. And now that we are fully in June, artists are churning out albums and singles to get us through the summer months. This week, especially, is a hot spot for new bangers for your playlists.

We have releases like “TUYA” by ROSALÍA, “Who Told You (feat. Drake)” by J His, “VULGAR (with Madonna)” by Sam Smith and Madonna, and “WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DYING FOR?” by Shawn Mendes, who wrote the track in 24 hours after New York City was covered in smoke from the Canadian wildfires. But that’s not all, not even close.

EDM extraordinaire Chris Lake came out with his remix of “In The Yuma (feat. AATIG) (Four Tet Remix)”, which is sure to be a club banger. City Girls released “Piñata”, and Youngboy Never Broke Again dropped the first single from his new album, “Realize (feat. Lil Dump, Rojay MLP, NBA Big B)”.

Since this week was filled with new music, here are a few of my picks to put on your weekend playlist:

    1. Noah Kahan – Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever)

Rapidly rising indie folk artist Noah Kahan has been stealing the hearts of listeners. It’s not hard to love his music, which feels like the perfect blend of The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, and Hozier. His new album, Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever), contains 21 songs that are purely Noah. The Vermont-born singer has a raw way of storytelling, with country-inspired backing from symphonies of banjos and string instruments. It’s worth the listen from top to bottom.

    2. Niall Horan – The Show

In his first album since 2020, Niall Horan releases The Show…and wow, does this feel like the moment Horan skyrockets into superstardom alongside former band member, Harry Styles. Dare I say it’s his best? Throughout 10 songs, Niall takes you through a journey of love and positivity, it’s an album that you can already imagine bringing fans of all walks of life together. It’s a body of work that Horan has been working on for years, and it’s a special album that should be rewarded.

    3. Carter Rubin – “last time”

Carter Rubin may only be 17, but his voice already has a timeless quality that is beautifully exhibited in his new single, “last time.” It’s an honest track that captures how it feels to fall in love at such a young age, and perfectly shows off Carter’s strong vocal abilities that will make him a star. With qualities of a go-to summer anthem, “last time” is Carter Rubin’s submission for your Song Of The Summer.

    4. Will Linley – “Tough (The Girls Song)”

Fans love Will Linley because he can create a track that fully encompasses what it’s like to as a member of Gen Z, perfectly summing up how we’re all feeling constantly. The musical embodiment of “I do my own stunts,” Linley is a singer, songwriter, and can play multiple instruments…fully showcasing his impeccable talent at all times. With “Tough (The Girls Song)”, we are given an 80’s vibe that never gets old and a fun single about a long-distance relationship ending.

    5. Arctic Lake – “My Weakness”

Arctic Lake, the duo compiled of Emma Foster and Paul Holliman, are gearing up to release their new EP, How Do You Make It Look So Easy, with their new single, “My Weakness.” It’s traditional Arctic Lake, an open-hearted single about how, when you’re in love, it can be your greatest strength and weakness. Alongside the single, the duo dropped a video racing us down a neon-lit highway jamming along to the song.

    6. Baby Queen – “Dream Girl”

Proclaimed London’s biggest “anti-pop” star, Baby Queen is here with “Dream Girl”…a pop-punk fusion talking about these two polar opposite sides of her meeting as one. It’s a song about how Baby Queen fell in love with a woman who was already in a relationship with a man, and wanting something you can’t have. It’s punchy, fun, and exciting, which is the perfect ending to this New Music Friday roundup!

  • Camila Cabello And Shawn Mendes Reunite At Coachella, Huddle With Friends Over Drinks

Camila Cabello And Shawn Mendes Reunite At Coachella, Huddle With Friends Over Drinks

    [ad_1]

    By Miguel A. Melendez, ETOnline.com.

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes reunited Friday night at Coachella, and they looked like two good friends having a grand ‘ol time.

Cabello and Mendes were spotted at the music festival in Indio, California chatting it up and sharing drinks with friends. In one video, shared by Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM, Cabello can be seen looking up at Mendes, who is seen intently listening to her as he smiles and holds a drink.

He’s seen wearing a white t-shirt, khakis and a blue headband tied around his neck. Cabello donned a white tank top and jeans. There are reports the duo arrived separately with their group of friends and enjoyed several shows before their late-night encounter.

Pop Crave later posted a short video of Cabello, Mendes and their friends toasting to the night and hanging out over drinks.

Cabello and Mendes dated for two years before breaking up in November 2021. At the time, a source told ET that the relationship ran its natural course after realizing they were on a different page.

“Shawn and Camila’s breakup was mutual,” a source told ET a day after they announced the split. “They realized they are in totally different places in their lives at this point, and it was time to end things. They’re both sad about the split, but doing their best to take care of themselves, stay busy and surround themselves by loved ones.”

They remained friendly after the split, with photographers spotting them hanging out and smiling in Miami nearly two months after breaking up. When Mendes teased new music in January 2022 and asked his fans if they dig it, Cabello responded to his Instagram post and commented, “Ur crazy wildcat.”

After Cabello dropped “Bam Bam,” fans theorized the track’s about Mendes. Then, in a March 2022 interview with Zane Lowe, Cabello evoked Mendes’ name while addressing what inspired her to write the song.

“I f**king … I love Shawn,” she says. “I feel like there’s literally nothing but love for him, and this song is mostly just about, OK, how do I make a song that shows the cycles of love and life and gives people whatever it is that’s going on in your life — whether it’s a breakup or a divorce. Hopefully this [song] can make you be like, ‘It is that way now but things are always taking crazy turns.’”

The following month, Mendes told Ryan Seacrest on his “On Air With Ryan Seacrest” show and said he “loved Camila for so many years, and that’s never gonna change.”

In February, Cabello broke up with Austin Kevitch after less than a year of dating.

In a crowded field of young pop artists, Zach Hood stands out.

In just a couple of years, the Alabama native has built an entire world of pastel aesthetics, illustrated cover art, and songs perfect for a late night at home. It’s not an attempt to jump on the sadboi trend. It feels genuine, and fans have followed. “Isabelle” is his most popular track, but several of his songs have more than two million streams. A catchy hook can land an artist a hit. It takes purpose to build an entire catalog.

It may be no coincidence that Hood’s career took off following the pandemic. His lyrics address isolation and the need for human connection. But he extends beyond cozy bedroom beats. His EP BLOSSOM opens with “i ain’t rich, girl,” a guitar-driven reimagining of Hall and Oates’ “Rich Girl.” Starting with hand claps, “when she was mine” ditches the pop sound for sing-along back porch folk.
