There’s something magnetic about athlete-celebrity couples. Maybe it’s the mix of locker room grit and red-carpet glamour, or how two worlds built on pressure and perfection somehow find common ground. Whether it’s a quarterback dating a pop star or a tennis legend marrying a tech mogul, these pairings always seem to grab our attention…and for good reason.
Athletes and celebs live fast, busy, spotlight-heavy lives. They understand what it’s like to be chased by cameras, critiqued by millions, and still perform at the highest level. That shared intensity can build a unique kind of bond, but it also makes dating a tricky endeavor. Between endless travel, demanding schedules, and the constant public microscope, love can be a challenging game to win. Add cheating rumors, fan theories, and social media drama, and suddenly, even a small dinner date can become front-page news.
Still, the fascination never fades. We love watching these worlds collide as few things top the touchdowns and love songs, the courtside kisses and runway moments. These couples show us what happens when ambition meets admiration, when two people who understand the grind decide to take on the spotlight together.
From all-time icons to modern-day favorites, these pairings have defined pop culture, dominated headlines, and proven that chemistry can thrive under the brightest lights. Some are timeless, some were short-lived, but all of them left their mark. Here are athlete-celebrity couples (past and present) who prove that love, fame, and a little chaos make the perfect combination.

Since their split, fans have wanted to know: why did Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley break up and what was the reason for the end of their relationship?
Woodley and Rodgers started dating in 2020 after they were introduced to each other through a mutual friend who are musicians. Within months of dating, they moved in together in Los Angeles and traveled back and forth between L.A. and Green Bay, Wisconsin, where Aaron plays for the Green Bay Packers. “You could travel, but you had masks on,” Woodley told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021. “There was a sense of anonymity that otherwise I don’t think we would have had. We were really able to get to know one another the way we wanted to get to know one another and not have any noise or chaos around us.
Woodley confirmed her engagement to Rodgers in February 2021. “Yes, we are engaged,” Woodley said in an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon at the time. “But for us, it’s not new news, you know, so it’s kind of funny. Everyone right now is freaking out over it and we’re like, ‘Yeah, we’ve been engaged for a while.’ ”
The Big Little Lies alum also told Fallon at the time that she didn’t know who the NFL player was before she met him. “I still have never been to a football game because we met during this wacky, wacky time and all the stadiums were closed that he was playing in. So, I have yet to go to a football game,” she said, admitting that she’d “never seen one football game before” and that sports weren’t on her “radar.” She added, “I don’t know him as a football guy. I know him as like the nerd who wants to host Jeopardy! That’s the dude I know. He just happens to be very good at sports.”
Why did Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley break up?
Why did Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley break up? People confirmed Rodgers and Woodley’s split on February 16, 2022, a year after their engagement. “It was an amicable split; it just wasn’t working,” the source said. “They’re very different people with busy careers and there were obstacles that they couldn’t surmount. They will remain friendly; there’s no bad blood and no drama. It just didn’t work out for them.”
A source told In Touch at the time that the couple split because Woodley felt “neglected” by Rodgers in favor of his career. “While Shailene is supportive of Aaron’s career, he put football first and they were barely spending any time together,” the insider said. “She felt he neglected their relationship. Neither of them was happy.” A second source also told In Touch that Rodger is an “independent guy” and “got cold feet” about his engagement to Woodley. “[They] couldn’t make it work,” the source said. “There were too many obstacles. They’re both adults and decided to part amicably.”
Another source told Us Weekly at the time Woodley and Rodgers hadn’t “been spending any time together” in the weeks up to their split because of how “focused” Rodgers is on his career with the Greenbay Packers. “Shailene has been super busy with work,” the insider said. “Everything was so different during lockdown, and they had been living in their bubble. Friends of Shailene didn’t believe Aaron is the best match for her.” A second source told the magazine that Woodley and Rodgers’ different interests also played a part in their split.
“They certainly had their differences and ultimately their relationship didn’t work,” the insider said. “They thought were a good match for each other in the beginning but the more they got to know each other they realized their careers, their interests [and] their political views weren’t aligned.” The insider also added that Rodgers is “very passionate about his football career,” which affected how Woodley felt in their relationship. “He was focusing more on the sport than on future plans with Shailene,” the insider said.
In an interview with Net-A-Porter, on January 23, 2023. Woodley opened up about how the relationship affected her mental health while filming Three Women. “It was hard to film because I was going through the darkest, hardest time in my life; it was winter in New York, and my personal life was s—-, so it felt like a big pain bubble for eight months,” she said. “I was so grateful that at least I could go to work and cry and process my emotions through my character.” She continued, “Three Women feels like it matters a lot — mostly, I think, because it mattered so much to me. I feel honored to be a part of it, because it genuinely gave me a North Star in a time in my life when my compass … calibration did not exist. And I think it has the potential to provide a North Star for other people out there too.”
“It honestly never really hit me that millions of people around the world were actually watching these things and paid attention to them. Then, I dated somebody in America who was very, very famous,” said the Big Little Lies star. “It was the first time that I’d had a quote-unquote ‘famous’ relationship, and I watched scrutiny, opinions, the desire for people to know my life and his life and our life — it just felt violating in a way that, before, it was fun.” She added, “I’m a very private person, and so I found that any time I posted anything, I instantly felt like I was sharing too much of who I am with people I didn’t necessarily trust.”
The split also came after a source told People in December 2021 that Woodley and Rodgers have a “different, non-traditional relationship.” The insider also denied rumors at the time that the couple had split. “Shailene and Aaron are still together. It’s not odd they don’t post about each other on their birthdays in that sense, and are very private about things,” the source said.
The breakup also came after Rodgers, who previously claimed that he was “immunized,” came under fire in November 2021 after he tested positive for COVID-19 and revealed that he was actually unvaccinated. “I realize I’m in the crosshairs of the woke mob right now, so before my final nail gets put in my cancel culture casket, I think I’d like to set the record straight on so many of the blatant lies that are out there about myself right now,” he said on The Pat McAfee Show at the time. “First of all, I didn’t lie in the initial press conference. During that time, it was a very — witch hunt that was going on across the league, where everybody in the media was so concerned about who was vaccinated, and who wasn’t, and what that meant, and who was being selfish, and who would talk about it, and what it meant if they said it was a personal decision.”
He continued, “Had there been a follow-up to my statement that I had been immunized, I would have responded with this: I would have said, ‘Look, I’m not some sort of anti-vax flat-Earther. I am somebody who is a critical thinker.’ You guys know me. I march to the beat of my own drum. I believe strongly in bodily autonomy and the ability to make choices for your body.”
During the interview, Rodgers claimed that he didn’t get vaccinated because he’s “allergic” to an ingredient in the Pzifer and Moderna vaccines. (He didn’t specify the ingredient.) He also noted that he opted against the Johnson and Johnson vaccine because he had “heard of multiple people who had had adverse events” after they received the vaccine. ESPN also reported at the time that Rodgers asked the NFL about “alternate treatments” he could have instead of the vaccine.
A source told People in January 2022 that Woodley and Rodgers have “agreed to disagree” on several topics including politics. “They are not talking about their politics, and they never really have,” the insider said. “They disagreed on a lot of things. Early on, they decided to agree to disagree about things and not debate them.” The source continued, “She is not someone whose mind you can change, so Aaron hasn’t even tried.”
Where do Shailene Woodley & Aaron Rodgers stand now?
In an interview with Bustle, Woodley hinted that she had to do a lot of healing after her relationship with Rodgers. “Just a broken heart. A broken heart that healed and broke again. I fell in love over and over with unavailability. I’m very open as a human. I love easy and I care easy, but I do not love lightly, and I do not care lightly.”
She continued, “It’s really taken me a lot of time to understand that it’s not on me to fix or heal or do anything about [a relationship] other than protect the deep care and love that I have for the world and for my people. Ultimately, that has helped me walk away without the need to understand why certain things didn’t play out the way that I may have desired them to.”
“I used to be a person who … would continue to give and give,” she said. “And now … I respectfully go, ‘Thank you so much for that information. Have a beautiful life. I wish you well.’”

Whether you want surprisingly funny family dramas, international excellence, or a refresher on one of the decade’s biggest sci-fi franchises, you’re in luck. From indies to blockbusters, these are the titles you need to watch before they leave streaming this month.
What’s leaving Netflix
The Farewell
While Lulu Wang’s star-studded series Expatsis still unfurling, why not watch the movie that catapulted the director into the mainstream? The Farewell stars Awkwafina as Billi, an aspiring writer who’s struggling to find work and her place as a Chinese American woman. When she hears that her beloved grandmother, Nai Nai, has been diagnosed with cancer, though, she drops everything to go see her in China. However, there’s another issue: the family is keeping Nai Nai’s diagnosis a secret from her, and a reluctant Billi must do so too. The Farewellwill be available to stream until February 29th.
Dune
After a lengthy, strike-related delay, Dune: Part Two is finally on the horizon. The second installment of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic (out March 1st) features a sprawling cast (with new additions Austin Butler and Florence Pugh) on top of a dense mythos, so there’s no time like the present to catch up by watching Dune. Timothée Chalamet stars as Paul, heir to the House Atreides within the galactic empire, who must contend with political threats to his father (Oscar Isaac) and strange trials courtesy of his mother (Rebecca Ferguson). Along the way, he encounters friends and foes alike, played by Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, and Josh Brolin. Dunestreams through the end of the month.
What’s leaving Hulu
Paddington
As winter truly begins to wear on us all, it’s the perfect time to watch some of the coziest movies of the 21st century. Paddington and its sequel are the rare family movie franchise to truly appeal to all ages, from the title bear’s expertly animated cuddliness to the A-list actors who get to play cartoonish villains (Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, the latter in a BAFTA-nominated performance). Though sweet little Paddington gets himself into quite the precarious predicaments, his mantra of “if we’re kind and polite, the world will be right” always holds true. Paddingtonstreams until the end of the month, while Paddington 2is available through February 26th.
What’s leaving Max
Drive My Car
Layered, lengthy, and packed with a lot of languages, Drive My Car is one of the most daring dramas of the decade so far. The film follows a theater actor and director who discovers his wife’s infidelity before her untimely death. Bereft and unmoored, he decides to accept a theater residency that will have him directing a multilingual production of Uncle Vanya. Ultimately, it’s a movie about understanding, and how we may never be able to achieve it when it comes to those we love. Everything about the film is superb, and there’s a reason why the movie was nominated for four Oscars. Drive My Carstreams through the end of the month.
What’s leaving Peacock
Five Nights at Freddy’s
One of last year’s biggest horror hits is departing streaming later this month. Five Nights at Freddy’s became a smash success when it was released in theaters and on Peacock last October, bringing the thrills from the beloved video game to screens both big and small. Josh Hutcherson stars as Mike, a man so desperate for a job that he takes on a gig as a nighttime security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a family pizzeria-slash-arcade with plenty of skeletons in its supply closets. Before long, things begin to go bump in the night, leaving Mike to solve a decades-old mystery. Five Nights at Freddy’sstreams through February 25th.
The Descendants
While The Holdoverscurrently stands as a favorite at the Oscars, it’s far from the first time that filmmaker Alexander Payne has seen success with the Academy. In fact, he won his second Oscar in 2012 for The Descendants, a complex family dramedy. George Clooney stars as Matt, a man who’s inherited and attained great wealth (including a large swath of land in Hawaii), but all of that stability vanishes when his wife gets in an accident that leaves her comatose. He must grapple with his role as a cousin, a husband and a father to his two daughters (Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller). The Descendantsstreams through the end of the month.
What to Watchis a regular endorsement of movies and TV worth your streaming time.
As one of the most famous NFL players in the past decade, it’s understandable why fans want to know about whether Aaron Rodgers has a wife and who his girlfriends have been over the years.
In an interview on The Pat McAfee Show podcast in September 2020, Rodgers, who is the current quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, revealed that he had a “new and increased love of life” thanks to some “changes” in his world (also known as his relationship with Shailene Woodley at the time.) “I have just a new and increased love of life,” he said at the time. “And I’ve made decisions and changes and habits that put me in a lot better headspace and there’s just a lot of things that have come together in my life over the last few months that have really been enjoyable and reminded me, given me perspective, on life and in football to view things through the most positive lens I possibly can.
He continued, “And that’s why I’m having so much fun and it starts with love. And then surrounding yourself with people that you really enjoy.”
Rodgers and Woodley broke up in 2021. But that doesn’t mean that the quarterback has stopped looking for love. Read on for what we know about whether Aaron Rodgers has wife and his girlfriends over the years.

Aaron Rodgers and Mallory Edens are dating, TMZ confirmed on January 9, 2023. Edens is the daughter of Milwaukee Bucks owner, Wes Edens, who is also co-owner of the Premier League club, Aston Villa. Rodgers is also a minority owner of the Bucks. Edens is also a model and a social media influencer with more than 200,000 Instagram followers. She’s represented by Women Management LA, Ford Models and One Management. Rodgers and Edens were first linked in December 2022 when they were photographed together a Bucks game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
“It’s more than friends, but it’s casual. Nothing serious at all,” a source told People in January 2023. “He’s not looking to rush into anything. It’s low-key for now.” The insider continued, “But it’s definitely a very close friendship that is evolving,” the source said. “He’s not going to do something as quick as Shailene [Woodley]. Live and learn.”
Shailene Woodley (2020 – 2022)

Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley dated fro 2020 to 2022. News broke of their relationship in February 2021. “They have kept things private and low key,” a source told E! News at the time. The insider revealed that Rodgers and Woodley were in a long-distance relationship early in their romance because the NFL player lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he was “very focused on his [NFL] season.”
At the NFL Honors broadcast that month, Rodgers confirmed that he and Woodley were engaged after he thanked his “fiancee” in his speech. “It’s an honor to win this award for the third time. 2020 was definitely a crazy year filled with lots of change and growth, some amazing memorable moments. 180 straight days of having my nose hair scraped, playing for very little fans or no stands the entire season,” he said. “I got engaged.” A source told People at the time that Rodgers’ friends weren’t surprised he was so quick to propose. “They are very happy together,” the source said. “It’s not surprising he proposed so fast. When you know, you know, right?”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2021, Woodley explained that her and Rodgers were able to keep their relationship a secret for so long because of the current health crisis. “You could travel, but you had masks on,” she said. “There was a sense of anonymity that otherwise I don’t think we would have had. Danica Patrick (2017 – 2020)

Aaron Rodgers was first linked to professional racecar driver Danica Patrick in December 2017. In an interview on Jenny McCarthy’s SiriusXM show in May 2018, Patrick recalled how she met Rodgers at the 2012 ESPY Awards. “We both remember meeting each other, it was quick,” she said. “I got his email address and I remember thinking to myself, ‘Oh, not a phone number? Just an email address?’” In an interview with E! News in 2019, Patrick revealed whether she and Rodgers had talked about marriage. “Look, there’s no guarantees in life, but as long as you have that intention, that’s what matters, right?”
The two bought a $28 million mansion in Malibu, California, together in 2019 before their split the following year in 2020. In a statement to Us Weekly in July 2020, a representative for the racecar driver confirmed that Patrick and Rodgers were “no longer together.”
Olivia Munn (2014 – 2017)
Image: Lionel Hahn/Sipa USA.
Aaron Rodgers and Olivia Munn dated for three years from 2014 to 2017. A source told Us Weekly in June 2017 that Munn was the reason for Rodgers’ estrangement from his family, including season 11 Bachelorette winner Jordan Rodgers. “Aaron is the one that has pulled away from the family, not the reverse,” the insider said. “When he got together with Olivia Munn, his family told them they didn’t trust her and thought she wasn’t with him for the right reasons. That made him furious, and he ended up choosing Olivia over his family.” Munn and Rodgers split in 2017.
In an interview with SiriusXM’s Radio Andy in 2018, Munn shut down rumors that she was the reason Rodgers was estranged from his family. “Before he and I started dating, he hadn’t spoken to the parents and one brother for, like, eight months before we started dating,” Munn said at the time. She continued, “They had a really nice conversation, then they started coming out my first year when I was in Green Bay in 2014. I just think it’s really important to try to mend things in a family, and I encouraged that.”

Aaron Rodgers was first linked to the Gossip Girl alum Jessica Szohr in 2011. The two split soon after but reunited for a short time in 2014. A source told Us Weekly at the time that Rodgers and Szohr first broke up due to their busy schedules. “They broke up because her schedule was crazy for a while and they just couldn’t stay together in that situation but now they have been spending their free time together and things feel good,” the insider said. “They fell right back into it.”

Toward the end of 2020, the only thing more pervasive than COVID-19 was “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. A song whose prowess carried over into early 2021, just as coronavirus did. At that time, TikTok was also blowing up more than ever. In large part thanks to “at-home culture” “thriving.” When corona first hit at the beginning of 2020, Megan Thee Stallion was having a moment all her own thanks to the “Savage” challenge that went viral on the app. A detail that also comes into play during Dumb Money, when a GameStop employee named Marcos Barcia (Anthony Ramos) trolls his boss, Brad (Dane DeHaan), after the latter tells him that while he can’t give him an advance on his paycheck, he can compete to win “ten labor hours” (presumably, that means ten hours’ worth of wages) by participating in a TikTok lip sync contest.
This, of course, happens after “WAP” soundtracks the intro to Dumb Money, as Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen) frantically runs through his multimillion dollar property upon being told to “dial in” by fellow hedge fund CEO Steve Cohen (played by an ever-mutating Vincent D’Onofrio). It is Cohen who informs Plotkin that, “They’re holding” (in other words, they’ve got “diamond hands”). The “they” in this scenario being the proverbial “little guy.” The David to Wall Street’s Goliath. And the representative for all the Davids of the U.S. at large is Keith Gill (Paul Dano) a.k.a. Roaring Kitty a.k.a. Deep Fucking Value. Although a financial analyst at MassMutual by day, Keith’s real passion appears to be his post-work life as a “recreational YouTuber.” And it’s one he ostensibly disappears deeper into after the death of his sister, Sara (the cause of which we’re made to assume was from Covid).
This is what the viewer sees when the film cuts to six months earlier, smack-dab in the middle of 2020. Meeting with his friend and financial colleague, Briggsy (Deniz Akdeniz), Keith tells him about his decision to double down on investing in GameStop stock. Which Briggsy bills as “penny stocks” (but hey, those were good enough to make Jordan Belfort a rich man, n’est-ce pas?). Keith insists 1) GameStop is not that and 2) it’s highly undervalued. The obvious metaphor tying into how the “average joe” is consistently undervalued, too. And what business could be more tailored toward such a demographic than GameStop (apart from, say, Home Depot)? He then lays into Briggsy about how “Wall Street gets it wrong all the time. Look at ‘08. These guys, they have all the money, and the fancy degrees, and the political juice in the world and they get it wrong all the time.” Briggsy still warns, “You never bet against Wall Street.” Wall Street, too, is well-aware of its rigged system. The one that everybody on the inside benefits from, including men like Plotkin, Cohen and Ken Griffin (played to perfection by Nick Offerman), the eerily stoic (like, Dick Cheney-level) CEO of Citadel.
These are the men who refer to people like Keith as “dumb money” (the asterisk given with said title card of the movie being: “*individual investors often derided as ‘dumb money’ by Wall Street”). But Keith, at six months into 2020, is about to show these fucks just who, exactly, is the dumb one. Rallying his ever-burgeoning Reddit following, co-screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo easily render Gill into a modern-day Robin Hood (and, to be sure, the app of the same name plays heavily into the narrative), taking money from the rich prematurely offloading their GameStop stocks (i.e., “shorting”) and putting it into the “pockets” of the everyman. Including essential health care workers like Jenny (America Ferrera, who is having her best year ever in the mainstream thanks toBarbie and this film, to boot). Among others like Marcos and college students Riri (Myha’la Herrold) and Harmony (Talia Ryder), these are the “subreddits” of the movie that thread together a larger point/theme. A point/theme that should be fairly overt to everyone by now, especially the rich (*cough cough* Wall Street finance bros). Then again, denial isn’t just a river in a hedge fund manager’s backyard.
And yet, although ignoring the contempt of the poor (read: everyone except the rich at this juncture) was relatively easy to do before 2020, this was a year when the internet became an echo chamber of unprecedented rage (markedly propelled by the filmed murder of George Floyd in late May—itself given a nod to in Dumb Money when Marcos passes a wall of graffiti that reads, “Fuck the Cops,” “Black Lives Matter” and “I Can’t Breathe”). A platform for expressing the extreme dissatisfaction that has been percolating for decades vis-à-vis capitalism and the lie it continues to sell about “everyone” having an “equal” chance to “get ahead” (this, of course, alluding to amassing as much money as possible, because that’s all we’ve been conditioned to believe really matters—and yes, people like Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion only perpetuate that message with their money-worshiping lyrics).
Never had it been made more patently clear that that simply wasn’t the case when coronavirus came to roost, and the accompanying lockdowns that classified the lowest-paid workers as essential compared to the richest “workers” who were told to “stay home, stay safe” made it laughably apparent just how unfair this whole game has been. While the fat cats were allowed to safely shelter in place in their posh homes, those paid in peanuts and balcony applause to risk their lives were made to suffer more than ever. And all without any promise of higher pay. So what is being “essential” really worth to he who controls the market? Because, in the end, no matter what, the Goliaths will be able to get what they want out of the Davids of the world, somehow managing to push them into submission one way or the other. In Gill and his acolytes’ case, that came in the form of shutting off access to the r/WallStreetBets forum under the guise of espousing “hateful and discriminatory content” that “violated Reddit’s code of conduct.” Ha! So it’s okay for the rich to make an entire affluent existence out of discriminating and being hateful toward the have-nots, but when the latter group tries to take a stand only then can it be called what it is? Oh hell no.
And when Keith commences his “thesis” on GameStop, he’s right to say, “The value is overlooked. Wall Street just doesn’t see it. Why?… The hedge funds are overlooking the value of the company just like they overlook the people who shop there.” The same kind of people who will continue to be overlooked now that the GameStop “fiasco” is “over.” And, in effect, it is. For the consequences, as usual, did not fit the crime (the SEC made no charges, not even against Ken Griffin). And people like Marcos, although slightly vindicated, continued to get the fuzzy end of the lollipop. Just as he does in having to ride the bus to work during the pandemic (GameStop found a loophole for staying open by declaring itself a purveyor of “essential products” to keep people connected while “working from home” [read: playing video games]). And when he finally gets off the bus to enter a deserted Detroit mall that houses, among other shops, a GameStop, the viewer can then see the ad on the side of the bus that reads: “Money burning a hole in your pocket? We’ll get you some more.” It’s only too appropriate when applied to the stock market as an American casino. Not to mention the way Americans in general are “incentivized” to operate on credit, to incur a negative balance that will keep them constantly on some lender’s hook. This ceaseless, propagandizing encouragement in the U.S. to borrow money and effectively gamble on yourself (knowing full well the system doesn’t want you to be a winner) is what’s at play in Dumb Money as well. Except the hedge fund fucks “in charge” were never banking on the everyman’s “deluded” self-confidence to actually pay off.
Never seeing the short squeeze on the horizon at all, despite how clear it was becoming throughout 2020. And yes, those reminded of The Big Short by the term “short squeeze” wouldn’t be wrong to make the correlation. After all, said 2015 movie also relates to rigged market fuckery and is based on a book: Michael Lewis’ The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine. Just as Dumb Money is based on Ben Mezrich’s 2021 tome (that’s right, the book came out the same year as the “incident” itself), The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees. While The Big Short was released almost a full decade after the debacle it addresses, Dumb Money is yet another prime example not just of the possibilities when “the plebes” are united in a cause, but also of the collective’s more recent obsession with looking back on the immediate past as though enough time has gone by to truly grasp the impact of what happened.
In the directorial care of Craig Gillespie (of Cruella and I, Tonya repute), that “grasp” becomes automatically comedic…even if it isn’t able to fully comprehend, so soon after it happened, the full weight of what occurred. The same goes for coronavirus itself, which most people have opted to sweep under the rug in terms of not wanting to remember “that time.” Preferring, instead, to pretend it never existed. In many respects, the attitude taken is tantamount to the cliche of everyone masturbating on a plane as they think it’s about to crash, only to realize the aircraft has righted itself and life will continue on for the time being. Afterward, everyone pretends that no one whipped it out in what they thought would be their final moments. That’s what coronavirus and its lockdown behavior mirrored.
As 2020 came to a close and corona continued to rage on, the sequestering required of people created an unprecedented online environment. A cauldron, if you will, for something like the subreddit of Wall Street Bets to brew into an entire movement. One that was, needless to say, a movement geared toward taking down the rich. Who had only gotten richer during the pandemic while the rest of the working-class “schmucks” lost their already paltry livelihood.
Perhaps what’s most striking of all about Dumb Money (even more than the hubris of the rich) is how it forces viewers to remember that “period” not so long ago. Capturing a moment when complacency had subsided, in large part, thanks to having so much “free time” to actually rail against the oppressor. And the last thing an oppressor wants is for his serfs to have too much free time to think about what a fucked system this is (glorified feudalism, in case you couldn’t guess). Hence, the urgency with which the masses were ferried back to “normal.” With nobody seeming all that concerned about acknowledging the shellshock of what transpired. Just as no one is with acknowledging the (enduring) lack of fairness in the stock market (“fair market” being an especial oxymoron here). No matter what kind of “movement” Keith may have started.
Per the film’s title card epilogue, that movement is summed up as follows: “Because of the GameStop rally, 85% of hedge funds now scour the internet to see where retail traders are investing. Fearing another short squeeze, funds have dramatically reduced their short positions. Wall Street will never be able to ignore the so-called ‘dumb money’ again.” Though that remains debatable.
And then there is the matter of refusing to acknowledge that what actually needs to change isn’t “leveling the playing field” so that broke asses can become just as cunty as richies, but blowing up the entire system, including its major capitalist trappings. I.e., the stock market.
Veronica Roth, author of the Divergent trilogy, has made peace with the fourth and final movie in the franchise never getting made.
After the first two movies were released, Divergent (2014) and Insurgent (2015), the third book, Allegiant, was set to be split into two parts. But the second part, which was initially titled Ascendant, never came to fruition after part one was released in 2016.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Roth said she has now accepted the way the film series concluded.
“I mean, breaking things in two was all the rage at the time. That was why that decision was made,” she explained. “But at that point, I think I always felt peace about it just because I knew the movies were taking a different track than the books, and if you change the lead up, you change the ending. So I kind of felt like at that point … I feel like that third movie, I don’t know, there’s a lot we could talk about with it. But it’s its own thing.”
She continued, “It feels complete to me, relatively speaking, because what does that even mean at that point?”
Set in a dystopian Chicago society, Roth’s sci-fi trilogy follows Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley), a young woman who learns she will never be able to fit into any of the world’s factions, which are based on virtues. She must navigate keeping her secrets to herself to stay alive as well as keep the city from falling apart.
The films also starred Theo James, Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Ashley Judd, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Tony Goldwyn and Ansel Elgort.
Once Lionsgate saw diminishing box-office returns on Allegiant, they decided to first slash the budget on the fourth movie, Ascendant, but ultimately ended up dropping the feature completely. Lionsgate also looked into developing a TV take on Ascendant, but it also never panned out.
As for Roth’s thoughts on separating a book into multiple movies, she said, “I just feel like it’s got to be a big, long book in order for that to make sense.”
“In an episode of television, if you have a cliffhanger, you have to wait a week or you could just binge it and then you can see the next episode,” he told People. “But making people wait a year, I think, came across as disingenuous, even though it wasn’t. Our intentions were not to be disingenuous.”
Shailene Woodley revealed that shooting her new Showtime series Three Women helped her get through one of the toughest times in her life by offering her a moral compass when she felt like her own was out of whack.
The actress opened up about the role and her romantic life in a new interview with Net-a-Porter. “It was hard to film because I was going through the darkest, hardest time in my life; it was winter in New York, and my personal life was shit, so it felt like a big pain bubble for eight months,” she said. “I was so grateful that at least I could go to work and cry and process my emotions through my character.”
The show, based on Lisa Taddeo‘s 2019 book by the same name in which the journalist spent years profiling three American women about their sexual and emotional lives, was filmed from October 2021 to May 2022. In February 2022, TMZ first reported that Woodley and her then-fiancé Aaron Rodgers had called off their engagement, a little over a year after the football player popped the question. In the months that followed, Woodley and Rodgers were spotted enjoying each other’s company multiple times, including attending a wedding together and visiting a vineyard after a night out at a casino. But by April 2022, People confirmed that the pair had decided to go their separate ways for good.
Woodley went on the explain to the outlet, “Three Women feels like it matters a lot—mostly, I think, because it mattered so much to me. I feel honored to be a part of it, because it genuinely gave me a North Star in a time in my life when my compass…calibration did not exist. And I think it has the potential to provide a North Star for other people out there too.”
She added that the public attention their relationship received also aided in souring the connection between her and the NFL quarterback. “It honestly never really hit me that millions of people around the world were actually watching these things and paid attention to them,” the actor said. “Then, I dated somebody in America who was very, very famous. It was the first time that I’d had a quote-unquote ‘famous’ relationship, and I watched scrutiny, opinions, the desire for people to know my life and his life and our life—it just felt violating in a way that, before, it was fun.” Woodley concluded, “I’m a very private person, and so I found that any time I posted anything, I instantly felt like I was sharing too much of who I am with people I didn’t necessarily trust.”
If you’re anything like me, you are always looking for ways to cut down your time getting ready in the morning without sacrificing style. Beyond makeup, my hair is usually what takes me the longest to do. It’s for that very reason that I like to keep a great rotation of easy-to-copy hairstyles in my repertoire (think ponytail hairstyles and bun hairstyles like these messy bun ideas). One of my main go-tos in particular is the forever chic chignon.
Not only does the updo hairstyle look and feel effortless, but also it’s pretty much appropriate for any occasion. I wear a low slicked-back bun hair look to work out, to lunch with friends, to school dropoff and pickup, and was even this close to wearing one to my wedding. In essence, when it comes to no-fuss hair, my motto is a chic chignon can do no wrong.
I know I am not alone in this, as evidenced by the runways, red carpets, and my Instagram feed. Keep scrolling to see 20 easy chignon hairstyles from the most stylish of celebrities and influencers (even a princess!), but first I breakdown the true difference between a chignon and a bun.
