Do you ever feel like your weekly routine gets a bit… monotonous? Repetitious? And maybe not as fun or challenging as it once was?

Of course, we all get into our predictable weekly routines that essentially define our lives. But what do you think about doing activities outside of work (and home) that you not only enjoy doing, but could also contribute to your success in other areas of your life?

There are a ton of benefits to having a hobby, ranging from mental and physical to possibly even financial. Spending time doing something that you enjoy that isn’t work-related will help you be more satisfied with life, especially if what you’re doing is only for your own personal benefit.

This increased feeling of happiness in life can overflow to benefit your relationships and your performance at work.

    How to Select a Hobby

There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re considering starting a new hobby. Consider the following:

    • The Challenge: You may want to consider looking for a hobby that can become increasingly challenging as you progress. This doesn’t mean it has to have a huge learning curve or you need to become an expert, but if you tend to get bored with things quickly, look for something that you can continuously improve upon.
    • Your Strengths: Play to your strengths so you don’t get frustrated or bored. Also, consider your current fitness level, any costs that you may incur, and your passions when choosing a hobby.
    • Stress: What is the level of stress that the hobby could potentially cause? If you start playing poker (which I imagine can be a high-stress game), you may want to find another hobby as well that is a bit calming to balance it out.
    • Time: If you have a family and you work full time, you probably (hopefully) don’t want to take up a hobby that is going to consume your entire weekend if it’s something that doesn’t include your family.

This isn’t to say you should limit yourself–you may actually end up surprising yourself by loving something that you’ve never been interested in before. So, keep an open mind, but also consider the other factors in your life so you can find a good fit.

So let’s take a look at 65 fun hobbies that any woman could take up.

65 Fun Hobbies for Women of All Ages

    1. Create Vision Boards

Creating and maintaining a vision board is something we talk about a lot on here because of how much it can benefit you in all areas of your life. Your vision board will give you a daily reminder of your long term goals and a tangible, visual source of inspiration to work toward them.

If you’re new to this, here are instructions on how to make a vision board and here are some templates you can follow.

And, once you get really into it, you can start to plan a vision board party!

Resource: These are all great resources to use for making a vision board.

    2. Read

We’ve stressed the benefits of reading in the past, which is certainly something I wish I had more time to do. And it seems like I’m not alone.

As the number of Americans who read for pleasure has hugely decreased since 2004, going from about 28% of the adult population reading for pleasure on a regular basis back then versus about 19% today, with the average amount of time spent reading per day is just 15 minutes.

This is a great hobby because you can take it on-the-go and easily pick up wherever you’ve left off.

Resource: Here are some tips on how to read faster and how to read and retain information better.

    3. Sing

It’s ok if you’re not confident in your singing. You can learn how to sing! If it’s something that you enjoy doing, join a volunteer choir or sign up for voice lessons to finetune your skills. There are actually a lot of benefits to singing, including:

Resource: To help improve your singing, you will also need to improve your lung capacity. Check out some tips on how to do so here.

    4. Upcycle

Not only are there environmental benefits to upcycling, you can also gain personal benefits by creating brand new things from items that may otherwise end up in a dumpster.

So, aside from minimizing landfill waste, you’re also reducing the need for the production of new things (which leads to a reduction in pollution, carbon emissions, etc.)

This is definitely a hobby that could turn a profit as well. Updating old furniture is a popular way to add unique pieces to home decor and people definitely are looking for cool things to add to their homes. You can sell your things on Facebook Marketplace or even at a local farmer’s market.

Resource: Here are some really great upcycling ideas.

    5. Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and make you feel good about yourself. Volunteering for a cause that you’re passionate about can also help you meet like-minded people and could potentially open the door for some future job opportunities.

By interacting with people in your community, you can help fight symptoms of depression and loneliness–plus, it can help give you a sense of purpose if you feel like you’ve lost your “why” in life lately.

    6. Run

If you’re one of those people who think that running just isn’t for you…there is a good chance you’re wrong! You may assume the opposite, but running can be relaxing and it can definitely be a stress reliever.

Running will help you strengthen your muscles, build endurance, and maintain a healthy weight. You will also be benefiting your heart health as you run, which is crucial because heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Resource: If you’re just starting out, try a Couch to 5K program.

    7. Or Walk

There are also many benefits to walking, so don’t feel pressured to run if that really isn’t your thing. You can walk for longer than if you were to go out for a run because it requires less intensity and endurance, but the more you do it, the more fit you will become.

And, because walking is super accessible (just grab the right pair of shoes and go), there isn’t really a barrier keeping you from starting this habit.

Walking can reduce stress and can also be a social hobby if you grab a friend who also wants to get some fresh air.

If you prefer to walk alone, this may be a good time to listen to your favorite podcasts or practice walking meditation. If you need to, you can break up a long walk into two shorter walks during the day to gain the same benefits.

Resource: If you want to use walking for weight loss, follow these tips to lose a pound per week.

    8. Start a Book Club

Take a break from online communities and get together with your friends in person with a purpose.

Getting a group together with a common goal on a regular basis for something aside from going to brunch can be stimulating for your mind, interesting, and social all at the same time. Plus, reading is super important.

Reach out to some of your friends who share your interests and take a poll of what they may want to read. Once you decide on a book, create a meeting schedule, grab some wine and snacks, and discuss everyone’s take on the book.

    9. Draw in Adult Coloring Books

Adult coloring books (also known as…coloring books…) allow you to create art without having the pressure of starting from scratch. Choosing your colors and just coloring in the lines is a great way to focus and relax. Working on coloring books can also help with a variety of emotional and mental health issues.

Many who suffer from stress and depression are triggered by boredom and a lack of structure. However, the focus that it takes to color helps take one’s mind off of negative issues and redirects their thinking in a more productive way. The process of acting and doing (rather than sitting back and watching) is an effective way to deter yourself from focusing on emotional turmoil.

This is a great hobby for those who suffer from anxiety, because focusing on harmless coloring is a calming activity that can put your fight or flight response to rest and allow you to relax while engaging in a safe activity. Focusing on coloring can replace negative thoughts from entering your mind.

    10. Start a Blog

What is a topic that you have some expertise in or what really interests you? Interior design? Upcycling furniture? Parenting? Book reviews?

Whatever your niche is, you can share your experience, opinions, and knowledge with the world by creating a blog. By doing this, you can also get feedback from your readers through comments, which can help you learn something new in return.

Blogging also has the potential to generate some income if you allow companies to advertise their products on your blog, which is an added benefit.

    11. Go Camping

I know some families who go camping with their kids on a regular basis and love it. I’m not saying this is for me, but considering how popular it is, there’s a good chance it could be for you. And, go figure, there are a ton of health benefits that you can get from spending this time in nature.

Camping can reduce clinical depression by offering you a form of exercising that’s completely disconnected from your work life. All you need is some camping and hiking gear and supplies and you will be ready to face the great outdoors.

    12. Join a Sports Team

    13. Geocaching

This active outdoor hobby involves using a GPS to hide and find treasures (“geocaches”) in specific areas that are marked by coordinates all over the world. In its simplest form, geocaching requires:

    • Signing up for your free membership
    • Going to the “Hide & Seek a Cache” page on the website and entering your zip code into the search
    • Picking a geocache from the list that populates
    • Putting the coordinates that are given into your GPS and going out to find the geocache
    • Signing the logbook and putting the geocache back
    • Sharing your experience online

A typical cache is a waterproof container that contains a logbook in it for each person who finds it to sign. The caches have little treasures in them such as books or small trinkets.

People enjoy this hobby for a variety of reasons, such as having the opportunity to explore new places, meeting new people who also geocache, getting some exercise outdoors, and finding a hidden treasure.

    14. Can Your Food

Canning food has recently increased in popularity with COVID-19 and the survivalist movement that’s been taking place. Canning food is an effective way to ensure you have an emergency food supply and to preserve some produce that you’ve overgrown and don’t want to waste.

    15. Learn a New Language

I know this is a hobby that I would love to focus on. Learning a new language will challenge your brain in new ways while also helping you learn about a different culture.

While this may be a time consuming hobby, you don’t have to put a deadline on it and it will be worth the effort in the end. Plus, it will allow you to communicate with others that you would otherwise never interact with because of your language barrier.

And, interestingly enough, studying a foreign language will improve your knowledge of your own language because it will help increase your English vocabulary skills. You will start to notice the interrelation of different languages, and how many languages use the same base for words.

Resource: The best place to turn for your first lesson in a new language is the internet. Check out Rocket Languages, an app in which you can choose from a selection of languages you want to learn, and then sign up for a free trial where you can receive a few sample lessons.

You can relay your message on whatever subject is especially important to you–and it will end up in a tangible format that you can keep forever and can be passed on for ages. You can also express your creativity as you’re sharing your thoughts with others.

    20. Do Some Re-Sale

I recently met a new friend and went to her house for the first time and there were books…everywhere. Like, stacks of books in the living room, dining room, on the porch—just everywhere. So, of course, I said, ”uh, what’s the deal with the books…?”

Well, it turns out her husband finds books that are either free or really low-priced at flea markets and then he turns around and sells them online. She said that he will only get about $10 for some, but others have gone for $50, and it adds up over time.

If books aren’t your thing, go through your closet and find those gently used clothes that you don’t wear anymore and try to make a buck by selling them online. Even if you only make a few dollars, you will still be decluttering your living space.

However, doing pottery literally forces you to stay off of your phone while you concentrate on this creation that ends up being something functional in your life–such as a vase or a mug. And the creativity options are endless.

Resource: Here is the ultimate guide to pottery.

If you’re like me, you spent a lot of your childhood years trying to imitate the choreography that was on music videos on MTV and VH1. Then the best part was then getting together with friends to perform the routines together.

Cards are getting expensive! I think my mom’s last mother’s day card was $9.99 or something close to that. And I know it would have been more meaningful to her to get a handmade card.

Take some time to experiment in the kitchen to see what you like to cook, what you’re really good at making, and what other people seem to enjoy.

Cooking is practical, but also creative and can be artistic. Cooking combines art and science to create an end product to nourish your body. And that’s pretty cool if you think about it.

Resource: Take up a hobby of playing brain games to keep your cognitive functioning astute.

    53. Start Sewing

This may sound old fashioned, but learning to sew your own clothes will allow you to have a wardrobe that is perfectly tailored to your style and the shape of your body. Furthermore, you can save money on costly tailoring repairs to your existing clothes.

Knitting is also convenient because you can bring your current project with you anywhere you go and quickly pick up where you left off. Pull out your project while you’re sitting in a waiting room or on the subway heading to work. Knitting is convenient, versatile, and practical.

Responsible pet ownership definitely requires time, patience, commitment, and a lot of research–so make sure you evaluate your current routine before bringing home a new buddy. For example, if you work full time, you probably don’t want to adopt an active puppy.

I love looking through thrift stores and some of the (less expensive) antique stores around town. If you find an item that really strikes you, start collecting similar items and display them in your home.

But be careful, it’s easy to go overboard or get carried away with collecting by buying everything that you see that is related to your collection. Only pick out the pieces that you truly love. Plan out a strategy for your antique shopping before you go, and consider bringing along a buddy to keep you accountable.

Resource: Here are some tips for buying antiques.

    62. Start a Garden

By maintaining a garden, you can introduce more nutrient-dense, home grown produce to your family’s diet or you could simply add some curb appeal to your home.

Even if you live in an apartment, you can reap the benefits of growing herbs and some smaller fruits and vegetables. You may not realize the difference in taste of home grown foods than those that you buy conventionally until you try it!

Gardening is also a decent form of exercise if you have a yard, as it requires a lot of moving around. Many people find this hobby to be rewarding as they watch their seeds grow while connecting with nature.

Plus, this is a good activity that you can get your kids involved with if you want to teach them about responsibility.

It can help you preserve the parts of your memories that you wouldn’t normally keep–like the nightly specials at the restaurant you went to while on vacation with your partner.

Keeping these smaller details is always fun to look back on later in life and it can help jog your memory of some pretty fun times.

Resource: Here is a good video on how to make your first scrapbook.

    64. Dance

Dancing is a great way to stay in shape for people of any age. Not only will it strengthen your muscles, it can also increase your endurance and improve your overall fitness level. Plus, think of the balance, coordination, flexibility, and agility you can master.

Find a Zumba class or some local dance nights in your community. Or, grab your partner and take some Salsa lessons. Dancing can increase the release of endorphins in your brain and helps to get your body flowing, so it can benefit you both mentally and physically.

Resource: Here are some tips and a good beginner course for getting started with dancing.

    65. Paint

Painting is a good hobby because it has a lot of psychological benefits to offer. Not only can it help cultivate creativity, psychologists have related the experience of concentrating on the process of painting to mindfulness activities like yoga and meditation.

Your age and level of talent here are irrelevant. Anyone can gain the relaxing benefits of painting and expressing their own imagination through color. You can attend a guided painting class if you want some structure, or just get some brushes and paint and go somewhere that you feel inspired to paint.

Dating and romance in the older years come with some complexities. The societal emphasis on youthfulness can create self-consciousness about the tell-tale signs of aging. Some older people may experience levels of insecurities about dating because of the perception of unattractiveness or lower desirability. The self-conversations also matter.

Fine lines and wrinkles tell a powerful story of the journey of life. But if all you see is aging skin that has lost its youthful vibrancy and elasticity, then it can severely impact one’s self-perception and esteem. The lack of self-confidence can hinder social interaction, thus making it hard to meet potential partners.

Well, there’s an excellent skincare solution — Treat yourself with the best serum for aging skin and feel more confident than ever. Such remedies bring back the youthfulness and glow in one’s appearance. But you might wonder, what IS the best serum for aging skin? We will show you how to choose.

Best Serum For Aging Skin — 8 Things To Consider

Best face serum for aging skin

Well, choosing the best serum for aging skin depends on a number of factors. The most important would be the specific skin concerns you want to address. Others are budget, sensitivities, or allergies. Consider the investment in good quality serum a token of self care and well being gift.

Top considerations for the best aging skin serum should incorporate the following ingredients.

    1. Retinoids

The vitamin A derivatives enhance collagen production and promote skin renewal. This reduces skin wrinkles, and gives better skin texture and even skin tone.

    2. Hyaluronic acid

The acid helps in skin hydration due to its capacity to hold significant amounts of water. The skin looks plumper, resulting in a reduction in wrinkles and the appearance of fine lines.

    3. Vitamin C

The powerful antioxidant powers of vitamin C brighten the skin, promote collagen synthesis, and provide protection against environmental damage. This ingredient makes these serums useful gifts that keep giving, whether for him or her.

    4. Peptides

The protein composition of peptides stimulates collagen production and improves skin elasticity and firmness.

    5. Antioxidants

The best anti-aging skin serum should contain antioxidants. You will find certain ingredients like grape seed extract, green tea extract, and resveratrol. These provide protection against radical damage, which accelerates the aging process.

    6. Vitamin B3 or Niacinamide

Vitamin B3 improves the appearance of enlarged pores, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. It also provides an effective way to strengthen the skin’s barrier.

    7. Glycolic acid

Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) promotes skin turnover, exfoliates, and gives a smooth complexion. This results in improved fine lines, acne scars, and uneven skin tone.

    8. Sunscreen

The best face serum for aging skin should contain a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. That reduces the impact of UV radiation on the skin.

Please note that it’s important to introduce the anti-aging skin serum slowly. This is especially important for those with sensitive skin as it will help avoid irritation. It’s also a good idea to consult skin care professionals or dermatologists before using any product. Based on the results, they can assess specific skin needs and recommend the best products to you.

  • Best Dark Spot Remover For Face

Best Dark Spot Remover For Face

In the dating world, attractiveness really matters. There’s, after all, the impact of the first impression that immediately captures attention and translates into initial interest. Love experts refer to this as the halo effect. This describes attributing positive qualities to those we find attractive. As much as your partner finds you attractive, you subconsciously want their friends and other family members to think the same. The role of perceived attractiveness is important in confidence and self-perception.

In physical attractiveness, the face is a focal point. Smooth, flawless skin, impeccable makeup, and nicely shaped brows make you feel good. And your potential or existing partner will take due notice. But what if you start to notice dark spots all over? Your confidence levels can drop significantly, thus impacting your love life. But there’s an excellent solution in the form of skincare. Let’s talk about the best dark spot remover for face.

What Is The Best Dark Spot Remover For Face? 4 Things To Consider Before You Make The Purchase

When you look in the mirror and feel good, there’s a powerful ego boost. Love experts will tell you there is something special about confidence and a positive self-image. These qualities significantly enhance one’s dating prospects.

It would be easy to think that buying the fastest dark spot remover is the best way to get ahead in the dating scene. But your skin type and dark spot severity should be the guiding factor. However, at the very least, the best cream for dark spots on the face should have the following ingredients and considerations:

    1. Skin type and sensitivity

Choose dark spot removers based on your skin type. There are special formulations for sensitive, dry, and oily skin. This is critical in preventing excessive dryness and irritation. It’s important to always carry out a patch test before applying even the best cream for dark spots on the face. Looking for matching couple gifts? Combination skin dark spot removers would be great.

    2. Ingredient list

The following ingredients have been found to be quite effective in some of the best dark spot removers in the market.

    • Hydroquinone: This tops the list as the fastest dark spot remover. Its action lies in its ability to block melanin production. But please note that, though effective, it can be very irritating to sensitive skin. Also, look for products with a concentration of 2% or less to avoid adverse effects
    • Kojic acid: The mushroom derivative is a natural ingredient that is extremely effective at fading dark spots. It inhibits tyrosinase production, an enzyme that contributes to melanin production. Please note there may be sensitivity for some people
    • Retinol: The vitamin A derivative has anti-aging properties. Yet, it’s also effective at dark spot fading through skin exfoliation and increasing cell turnover
    • Vitamin C: This antioxidant protects the skin against free radical damage. It’s also effective at protecting the skin and reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation

Kojic acid and vitamin C are generally gentler ingredients. That makes them the best option when looking for the best dark spot remover for faces that have sensitive skin. The inclusion of natural remedies like aloe vera, lemon juice, and honey can also help lighten skin and dark spots. In more severe dark spot cases, go for prescription-strength ingredients like hydroquinone. Avoid any dark spot remover that contains steroids or mercury, as these are harmful ingredients that can worsen the skin’s appearance over time.

  • Self-Care Isn’t Selfish — It’s Essential. Here’s Why. | Entrepreneur

    Self-Care Isn’t Selfish — It’s Essential. Here’s Why. | Entrepreneur

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

What’s your first instinct when you feel the mounting pressures of running a business?

If you’re like many leaders, you double down on your workload. That means spending more time at the office and less time on your personal health, hobbies and relationships — and that might work sometimes. You may even attribute your business’s success to that instinct.

The problem is that humans aren’t designed to function at maximum capacity 24/7. Working twice as hard doesn’t necessarily result in getting twice as much work done. Instead, pushing yourself past the point of exhaustion has been shown to lead to less creativity, reduced working memory and capacity for problem-solving and worse business outcomes.

Unfortunately, “self-care” has become so overused as a buzzword that it has become meaningless other than as a way to sell bath bombs and expensive retreats. But self-care isn’t a self-indulgent luxury for people with more time than you; it’s an essential tool for high-performing leaders who want to excel in their business.

If you want to maintain high performance and effectively navigate the challenges of leading people and leading a business, it’s time to shift your perspective.

    Related:

The rise of burnout in leadership

We heard a lot about burnout during the pandemic and its aftermath. Reporting from Gallup showed that the burnout rate among managers increased significantly between 2020 and 2021, leading to increased quit rates among managers and leaders and unmanageable workloads for those who stayed.

But, burnout among leaders is a perennial problem — one that existed long before the pandemic, and one that will persist in the future. For instance, Gallup polling from 2018 showed that more than two-thirds of workers were burned out, with managers reporting more stress and burnout, worse work-life balance and worse physical health than members of their teams. And, a recent survey found that even though life outside the workplace has returned to normal for most people, 70% of C-level executives are considering leaving their company and taking a new role in an organization that supports their well-being.

    Self-care: Beyond the bubble bath

Of course, as an entrepreneur running two companies, I know that understanding the importance of self-care and making time for self-care aren’t the same thing. Here are some practical methods for incorporating self-care into your routine and infusing it into your organization.

    1. Small acts of self-kindness

Self-care doesn’t require grand gestures. Instead, small investments can have an outsized effect. It can be as simple as slowing down to taste your coffee in the morning or taking a short walk in the fresh air before heading into the office.

To carry self-care through your workday, you could build a playlist of your favorite songs that plays in the background as you work. Or get a vase of fresh flowers once a week to place on your desk. If you find yourself fading around mid-afternoon, take a walk, take a few deep breaths and reset yourself for the rest of the day.

There’s no limit to the amount or types of things you can do to take care of yourself at home and work. Finding ways to add elements of self-care to your daily routine is a great way to ensure your mind and body are getting the rest and nourishment they need to fuel the rest of your day.

    2. Take extended breaks, too

Vacation time should be viewed as mandatory, not optional. Completely unplugging from work is linked with increased well-being, engagement and creativity. Going on vacation can also lower stress and reduce your risk of developing heart disease. Don’t believe it? Consider that Lin-Manuel Miranda credits his idea for the award-winning musical Hamilton with taking a vacation.

But, so many of the entrepreneurs and executives I work with are reluctant to take a vacation. This mindset is not only bad for you — it’s bad for your employees. According to the Pew Research Center, 46% of employees in the U.S. take less time off than their company offers. Many of them don’t want to burden their co-workers with extra work. Some fear they will miss out on career advancement opportunities or possibly lose their jobs if they take time off.

    3. Make yourself less essential

We all know that entrepreneurs wear many hats, especially in the early days of their business. But if your company comes to a standstill the moment you step away, you’re doing something wrong.

It can feel gratifying to be integral to your business’s functioning, but ultimately, you’re shooting yourself (and your business) in the foot. A Gallup survey found that companies run by CEOs who delegate have a three-year growth rate that is 112 percentage points higher than companies with CEOs who do not delegate.

Leadership is the act of setting a vision and then accomplishing that vision through others. Surround yourself with people that you trust and then empower them to do their jobs. That way, you can take a break without feeling the burden of your business crumbling behind you as you walk away.

    4. Lead by example

As leaders, we need to remember that our employees are watching us and taking their cues from our behavior. When you ignore your own well-being, you send the message that your employees should ignore their well-being, too.

As a leader, it’s on you to create a permission structure and culture of self-care at your organization. Talk about the importance of self-care at work openly and frequently, especially with your leaders. Encourage employees to set (and keep) boundaries, especially when they are working remotely and the lines between when their workday begins and ends are blurred. When leaders practice self-care, the rest of the organization is more likely to follow.

    Related:

    5. Build self-awareness

Once you’ve created permission for you and your employees to take care of yourselves, you have to build the self-awareness to know when you’re showing up in an unproductive way and the self-efficacy to take some time when you are.

For example, I recently had a day that found me spiraling into a ball of stress and burnout. So, I decided to take the next morning a little slower than usual. Instead of rushing to the office, I spent a few extra minutes outdoors, picked a few fresh tomatoes from my garden and made an omelet.

I knew I wasn’t going to show up in a productive way if I just barrelled into the office all stressed out.

You need to expect the same from your employees. Forcing your employees to take care of themselves is infantilizing. They’re adults. Set an example and then trust them to follow it.

    Build your surge capacity

In an interview with the American Psychological Association, Dr. Ann Masten, a psychologist and expert on resilience, talked about the importance of protecting what she called surge capacity — the mental and physical resources we use to survive the stressful situations that are so common to life as an entrepreneur.

Unfortunately, she said, that capacity can get depleted. Faced with continuous challenges, we get exhausted and overwhelmed. When it does, we need to step back and try to replenish and restore our capacity through self-care.

As a leader, there will always be days when walking away from work feels challenging or even impossible. The key to taking care of yourself on the days you can is to remember that acts of self-care now will enable high-performance in the moments that matter.

Gisele Bündchen Reveals What Happened When She Quit Drinking

Time comes for us all, but wine doesn’t have to. In an interview with People, Gisele Bündchen discussed quitting drinking, and what happened when she went dry.

“Right after I turned 40, actually, I felt a huge difference between when I had the glass of wine and when I didn’t have the glass of wine,” she said. “It’s socially accepted to have a glass of wine. And people even say, ‘Oh, it’s healthy for you.’ Well, it is not healthy for me. If you want to ask of your body what I ask of my body, which is a lot, I can’t be having all these things (alcohol, caffeine) because they add up.”

Some of what she asks of her body includes parenting two kids (13-year-old Ben and 10-year-old Vivian), working out “every single day,” in her words (walking, yoga, weights, meditation), and the strains of work and travel as she co-parents with ex-husband Tom Brady, from whom she filed for divorce last October. She also, she said, was helping both of her parents through health problems.

“I feel like whenever it rains, it pours. With all the different twists and turns that life takes, all we can do is the best we can given what happens in our surroundings.”

She said she “immediately” felt the difference when she decided to quit drinking.

“I became more clear,” she said. “I felt a bit more foggy before. Now I’m very sharp and very present and I notice things that I didn’t notice before. When I’m not drinking, I’m sleeping much better. You have to be loving to yourself. You ask a lot of your body, you’ve got to do a reset. You have got to take care of this only vehicle you got, right?”

Bündchen defended self-care against those who might characterize it as selfish.

“No one is going to do it for you,” she said. “When you feel good, you’re a better mom, you’re a better friend, you’re calmer, you’re more patient, you’re more loving, you’re more grounded. So you can’t feel guilty about prioritizing yourself. Because that’s loving you and loving the people you love the most, which are going to be impacted by how well you are. Because if you’re sick, everyone’s hurts.”

It may also be considered self-care (in a financial sense, at least) that Bündchen is supporting her daughter’s passion for horse jumping while still not allowing her to get a second horse. “She’s obsessed,” she said of her daughter, who, as a certified Horse Girl, claims that she wants to be a professional equestrian.

“Now she’s already trying to get other horses,” she said. “She’s already like, ‘Mom. They told me I have to have a new horse to jump higher.’ I’m like, ‘You’re 10, calm down.’ Her horse jumps like a meter 20. ‘You’re going to be fine.’ I think it’s fine where you’re jumping right now.’ But she’s so courageous.”

She did, however, recently purchase a horse farm so Vivian can ride her horse, Item, in private. But that’s a no to a second horse, you hear? She has her limits.

  • Experts Share Tips And Trends For 2023’s Best She Shed Spaces

Experts Share Tips And Trends For 2023’s Best She Shed Spaces

“A room or part of a home in which a woman may indulge in hobbies and interests without being distracted by other family members,” explains Collins Dictionary in defining the she shed, which could easily have added ‘and a response to the better known man cave male equivalent.’

Of course, women have always had their – or should I say ‘our’ – own spaces at home, but these have traditionally been the home’s utilitarian zones for cooking, sewing, cleaning and the like. She sheds are mostly not about work, but about pleasure, hobbies, socializing or quiet reflection. While the term is clever, alliterative and perhaps a bit frivolous, its purpose of providing a self care space for women is anything but. I reached out to three experts by email for their insights on this topic. Their responses are below.

    Wellness Benefits of She Sheds

Holly Sweet, Ph.D., a Boston area psychologist focused on gender relations and women’s issues, mused that this important room deserves a better moniker. “Perhaps we should call it a ‘she-space’ since the term ‘she shed’ implies a place where tools and such are stored.” Given that women, including those with full-time jobs, still handle the lion’s share of housework and childcare, she observed, they definitely deserve a dedicated area to relax, pamper themselves and prioritize their own well-being.

This is something men have enjoyed for centuries, as Sweet recalled from her own childhood. “My mom had her desk in the kitchen and was always on call, whereas my dad had an office where he worked and a study at home. This was the norm back then.” Many women are glad that is no longer the case, and requests for she sheds – or she spaces, if you prefer – are booming.

There are definitely wellness benefits to these rooms — and the time women spend in them looking after their own mental health needs. “Without this space, she can feel confined, intruded upon, perhaps resentful if her mate has his (assuming heterosexuality) own space, and fatigued because she doesn’t have a much-needed time out from household tasks and care giving,” the psychologist shared.

This is important for women who live alone too, she noted. “She will need space to separate herself from her work and her household chores.” This is especially true for those who work from home. For these women, it’s even more important that there be a separation between the two, Sweet cautioned, citing her personal example: “I have my own study where I do my professional teletherapy work. I need to take a break from it, so I move to a different part of my house as a form of physical (and psychological) separation. Otherwise my work takes over the whole house, so I can feel overwhelmed and have to leave.” Having a separate zone for self care, however a woman defines this need, can be a better solution.

The psychologist is not overly concerned about isolation issues for the majority of women, pointing out that setting up a room for oneself in a home isn’t really isolating. “I would imagine that she might feel refreshed and ready to take on what is needed from her in terms of her family.” Sweet sees this as setting up healthy expectations of herself, her partner and her family, recommending that she think of it as a positive reframe for everyone.

    The She Shed Conversation

The space, dollars and time required to create a she shed will often necessitate a pre-planning conversation for women with partners, and that’s not always easy. Sweet suggested taking time before the conversation to write down what she needs and how her space will not only help her but help the household. This talk should happen at a non-busy time in the couple’s schedule when they can communicate without interruption, and in a private area. If her partner already has his own study (or man cave), she can stress the importance of having something comparable for herself.

As an example, Sweet proposed a talk like this, “Bill, I have some ideas about how space is used in this house. Do you have time now to discuss this or is there a better time for you?” If he has time, she could say something like this: “I’ve been thinking about the importance of me having a separate space in this house where I can pursue my work/interests/phone calls/reading etc. without getting interrupted. Can we think about how this might be accomplished given our space?”

The single woman won’t need to have that conversation with a partner, but might need to negotiate an inner conversation with conflicting priorities like saving for retirement, taking a bucket list trip or joining a gym.

    Who’s Adding She Sheds?

The she shed prospect runs the gamut. “I’ve had married women, single women and single moms request a she shed retreat where they can relax, read, nap, create art and/or spend time alone,” shared San Diego-based interior designer Rachel Viloria Moriarty. She has her own multi-purpose she shed, she revealed. “Sometimes it functions as a workspace, additional storage and/or a personal retreat.”

Since she sheds are a relatively new phenomenon, there isn’t a tremendous amount of data around them. Furniture retailer Joybird surveyed the topic in 2018 and determined that 59% of women had one versus 65% of men who had man caves. The survey also amusingly noted that 61% of women wouldn’t allow their partner in their she sheds, versus 52% of men saying this about their spaces – perhaps because man caves tend to be social, as well as retreat, spaces with considerable investment.

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based smart home technology integrator Amanda Wildman is also getting more she shed inquiries, she emailed. “We are seeing more requests from women as they are becoming the person that leads the home as a single woman or that is taking lead on the home with the family when it comes to technology.”

This is particularly true for remote professionals, she added. “As more people are working from home, they are looking for a space that feels different from their main home. These spaces are great for that! They can be a space to work, create or unwind, but just because they are out buildings, doesn’t mean that they need to be devoid of the technologies or amenities that we have come to expect and enjoy within our homes.”

    She Shed Variations

“I’ve had requests for potting sheds, art/craft rooms, office/studio spaces and lounge/guest spaces,” Moriarty commented. “I primarily design she shed spaces for one person and their pets,” she added, though they may also multi-function as guest bedrooms. (These can definitely be fun, inspiring accommodations for girlfriend getaways, friend staycations or sorority reunions.)

One interesting trend the designer has observed is vintage travel trailers and Airstreams becoming popular for she shed use. She had one client who purchased an Airstream during the pandemic to road trip with her dogs; now that she can travel freely, it stays at home with new purpose, she revealed. Moriarty has another client who had an Airstream lifted by crane into her back yard to serve as a she shed, and is seeing this as an emerging trend, she noted.

    She Shed Essentials

Whether in a vintage travel trailer, out building or spare room in a house, there are some standard must-haves. “These are most of the common elements of she shed spaces and they have stayed pretty consistent through the years,” Moriarty observed. This is her list:

    • Unless it’s a potting shed, she sheds typically have cozy seating like chairs, sofas or daybeds to relax and unwind.
    • All of these spaces incorporate art and accessories to add personalization and charm. I like to add in photos, family heirlooms, travel souvenirs and textiles to make the space feel unique to my client.
    • Good natural light when available is great, unless of course it’s meant to be a moody dark space.
    • We add built-in desks, shelving and multipurpose furniture to keep things organized.
    • I like to incorporate plants and candles for a touch of nature and to create a serene vibe.
    • A dedicated desk or art easel for work or crafting and art.
    • Wi-Fi access for iPads, laptops or Bluetooth speakers for playing music to create a vibe and entertainment purposes.
    • Some clients like to have a tray with their favorite spirits and glasses nearby to have a little drink at the end of a long day.

    The Wired She Shed

As Moriarty pointed out, today’s she shed needs connectivity for devices and music. Some clients have additional needs, as Wildman wrote, including climate and lighting control and network enhancements to handle hobby gear. “For example, if you are using the space for crafting, you might want a network connection to update your Cricut machine or to download the latest software.”

Fitness is another reason for enhanced network capability. “Perhaps you are using it for a more Zen purpose and you’d like to attend a virtual yoga class in your space,” the technologist added. “All these things require solid network performance.”

There are many reasons why a woman wants her she shed to have connectivity. “For example, how can I remotely control the HVAC so that when I go into that space it’s already at a comfortable temperature, but I don’t have to worry about regulating that space all the time when not in use,” Wildman suggested.

“Lighting is one of the hottest offerings right now for these spaces,” she declared. “With a variety of options that offer a full spectrum of color, you can choose something that really starts the party feel of your space with color changing and sound-responsive fixtures that will change with the beat of your music, or you can create a more reserved mood with dimmable fixtures that can calm you and resemble candlelight. Whatever your preference, painting with color has never been more fun or more available to homeowners than now.”

Additionally, there are safety-related lighting considerations. “If the space is across the yard, can I control the lighting so that I am entering or exiting the space with proper illumination to be safe and feel comfortable; you don’t want to trip if you come back to the house in the evening, and it can also be a safety concern to ward off animals or strangers,” she added.

Security matters in other regards too, Wildman commented. “In a space like this, people are also looking for a way to be connected to their homes so if something like a delivery arrives, how should they be notified out in the she shed, so something as simple as access to view the doorbell or cameras can be an important feature.”

For all of these reasons, plus entertainment, “The number one piece of technology that we see requested is how to make sure there is reliable network access in these spaces…especially if you are hoping to do any work out there or use streaming services for either music or even television,” Wildman declared. “The difference between having or not having a reliable network connection can really affect your experience within the space.”

    Final Words

Wildman’s insights about technology for a smart home can be broadly applied to other aspects of setting up your she shed. “Allow this space to be fun and creative. Want to party? Get some music going with fun lights. Want a place to gather for game day? Make sure you have a great TV and sound that ensures everyone has the perfect seat. Looking to boost your creativity? Make sure that all your systems have internet access and that your space is cool and comfortable for you to get into the creating zone. Looking to get your Zen on? Set up some background sounds like a babbling brook and dim the lights.”

Systems, furnishings, personalized elements and a self care approach to life can make your she shed a space that enhances your home and health.

  • How to Master the Art of Leading Yourself | Entrepreneur

How to Master the Art of Leading Yourself | Entrepreneur

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Self-leadership is about more than just being able to lead yourself. It involves taking care of yourself to optimize your personal and professional life, recognizing personal values and aligning them with business goals, organizing yourself, and being your best self.

Entrepreneurs are constantly on the go. Since we work long hours, we can get lost in the demands of the business and need to remember to take care of ourselves. However, self-care is crucial in self-leadership. When business leaders don’t practice self-care, they become overwhelmed and burnt out, which means a decrease in productivity, creativity, and overall happiness.

Related: Why Self-Leadership is Essential to Your Success

    Know yourself and your purpose

Becoming aware of your thoughts and emotions can be challenging, but with practice, it becomes easier. Meditation and journaling are tried and tested ways of becoming self-aware. By practicing meditation and writing down your thoughts, you can learn to observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment, leading to greater self-awareness and insights into your behavior.

Once you have identified your values and purpose, you can align them with your business goals. This alignment leads to greater fulfillment and success in personal and professional life.

    Take care of yourself

Leaders and entrepreneurs prioritizing their physical and mental health can perform at their best and lead more effectively. Self-care is not a luxury. Leaders and entrepreneurs who prioritize self-care set an example for their team and create a culture of well-being. Moreover, taking care of yourself leads to greater productivity, creativity, and resilience, allowing you to perform at your best.

When you ride a plane, one of the safety instructions is always “put your mask on first before helping others.” The same is true in business. Leaders and entrepreneurs prioritizing their physical and mental health can better serve their teams and customers. Physical fitness means higher energy levels, reduced risk of illness, and better stress regulation. Regular exercise, healthy eating, and adequate rest are the foundations of being physically fit.

Mental well-being is just as important as physical health. Leaders and entrepreneurs prioritizing mental health can better manage stress, think more clearly, and make better decisions.

There are many strategies for self-care, and it is essential to find what works best for you. For one, there are plenty of ways to keep fit — you can participate in team sports, lift weights at the gym or walk for a few miles during the day.

Healthy eating — planning meals and eating whole foods — is equally essential in keeping yourself healthy. Finally, getting enough sleep and scheduled downtime can help your stress management.

Stress is a part of life, and chronic stress can lead to burnout. Fortunately, business leaders prioritizing stress management can prevent burnout and maintain well-being.

    Organize yourself

Organized leaders manage their time effectively, prioritize tasks and make better decisions. By being organized, we set an example for our teams and create a culture of efficiency and effectiveness.

Setting goals can help you stay focused and motivated. Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Once you have goals, you can create a schedule that helps you accomplish all your weekly tasks.

Prioritization is crucial for managing time effectively. You can prioritize tasks by assessing the urgency and importance of each task, delegating tasks when possible, and breaking down large tasks into smaller, manageable ones. Creating a schedule can help you manage your time effectively and avoid procrastination. You can create a schedule by blocking time for specific tasks, breaks, and even your leisure time.

Avoiding distractions is also vital. Distractions can derail productivity and waste time. You can prevent distractions by turning off notifications, setting aside time for specific tasks, and utilizing productivity tools like the Pomodoro technique.

    Be your best self

Being your best self is a critical aspect of self-leadership. Leaders and entrepreneurs who strive to be their best selves can create a positive work environment, build strong relationships with their teams, and achieve their goals. Effective self-leaders possess certain qualities, like punctuality, honesty, openness, and consistency. These qualities are essential for developing a high-trust relationship with teams since they make you predictable as a leader: Being punctual demonstrates respect for others’ time and shows a commitment to professionalism. Meanwhile, honesty and openness will prove that you have no hidden agenda and everyone is on the same page. Finally, consistency in behavior and decision-making builds a stable work environment without negative surprises.

Finally, supporting team members can create a culture of positivity and productivity. Leaders and entrepreneurs should provide resources, guidance, and feedback to team members when necessary. This goes both ways, though—building a support system of mentors, peers, and friends provides a positive feedback loop of guidance, motivation, and continuous learning.

    Self-leadership is a habit

Self-leadership is not a one-off activity but a habit needing consistent practice. It is also crucial for optimizing your personal and professional life. Practicing self-care, knowing yourself and your purpose, organizing yourself, and being your best self are all essential components of self-leadership. By making self-leadership a habit, leaders and entrepreneurs can increase their productivity, creativity, and overall happiness, leading to more success in their personal and professional lives.

  • 10 Things Every Working Woman Should Do This Year

10 Things Every Working Woman Should Do This Year

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Self-care has become an all-encompassing term that has strayed from the importance of everyday commodities that keep us in good health and spirits. Though pampering and “treat yourself” moments still have value, here are ten ways to invest in yourself to produce long-lasting, positive results.

Related: 8 Self-Care Tips From Wildly Successful Entrepreneurs

    1. Put money into a 401(k)

It’s never too early (or too late!) to start saving for the future. Depending on your employment status, there are different retirement savings accounts. 401(k)s are the most common since these are employer-sponsored and often come with an employer match. However, freelancers also have options, such as a SEP-IRA or a high-yield savings account, to put away extra, tax-free dollars for retirement.

    2. Schedule a health checkup

Self-care first includes taking care of your physical health. It’s easy to discredit regular checkups when you’re feeling healthy, but make this the year to get your blood work done. It creates a baseline for your health to identify areas needing improvement or extra attention.

Also, choose areas in your life where you can make small changes. Improving your health doesn’t always mean a drastic overhaul; it may be as simple as drinking more water or adding an extra 30 minutes of exercise to your day.

Related: 3 Key Tips for Optimizing Your Physical Health as an Entrepreneur

    3. Review health insurance benefits

Many people with health insurance aren’t sure exactly what it does and doesn’t cover. If you’re unsure, talk with your HR representative or your health insurance provider to get an overview of deductibles, co-payments and other supplemental benefits you may not be aware of. Then, decide if the health care plan makes sense for your current lifestyle.

Are you paying for benefits you don’t use, or do you need additional benefits that aren’t covered? Selecting the right plan will help ensure you have what you need without paying the extra expense for anything you don’t.

    4. Ignite your curiosity

Maintaining healthy cognitive functions through new pursuits gives a boost to the brain. Get curious and find what speaks to you. This can be anything from exploring local museums, embarking on different hiking trails, learning a new language or reading more books.

There’s no limit to what you can do, and these activities can ignite more creativity and motivation in your work. While it may be helpful to look to others for inspiration, make them enjoyable so you’ll want to make them a regular occurrence.

    5. Prioritize mental health

Mental health has been at the forefront of people’s lives over the past few years, as many have experienced burnout. We often equate productivity with a value that drives us to go beyond our means and leads to anxiety, stress and depression. Take note of your everyday stressors and see how to reduce or eliminate them. Then, replace them with relaxing outlets that allow you to recharge.

There are various ways to prioritize mental health, from practicing positive self-talk to meditation to scheduling an electronics-free day. You may have to try different solutions before you find one that fits.

Related: 5 Ways to Protect Your Mental Health as an Entrepreneur

    6. Implement good sleep habits

Consistent sleep is one of the essential factors of good health but one that is often overlooked. For many, it can be challenging to wind down from the workday. Therefore, you must “train” your body to prepare for sleep by getting into a nighttime routine.

Create a sanctuary for yourself to improve your sleep habits. Enjoy a soothing cup of herbal tea, perform a skincare routine, and snuggle in with a good book rather than scrolling through your phone. Additionally, ensure your bedroom is dark and cool for ideal sleep comfort and turn on soothing sounds if it helps lull you to sleep.

    7. Try something new

What have you wanted to try but have always held back? Maybe it’s public speaking or contributing to a blog. Whatever “new” has been on your to-do, make a plan, schedule it on your calendar and go for it. It’s common to hold back from these activities due to fear of the unknown or failure, but trying new things helps create confidence and can be the catalyst you need to push you to the next level.

    8. Learn to set boundaries

Boundary setting is crucial to relationships yet can be difficult to master. It doesn’t always involve simply saying no to people’s requests. Instead, it requires protecting your own values when people violate them. Setting boundaries may mean spending less time with certain people, removing yourself from toxic situations, or declining invites to events that don’t improve your life. Explore areas where boundaries will help you grow, and keep in mind growth itself is a work in progress.

Related: How to Set Boundaries to Build Thriving Relationships

    9. Spend quality time alone

Learning how to enjoy time spent alone is a valuable gift. We are inundated by a false sense of connection through the internet, which often makes us feel lonelier than ever. Then, we overschedule our calendars to make up for human connections, only to feel drained afterward. Slow it down and plan a few solo dates a month to see how it feels to be truly present with yourself.

For those who aren’t used to spending quality time alone, it can feel awkward and uncomfortable initially, but these stem from your own perceptions. Take in a matinee, sit in a coffee shop and read, or enjoy a concert or event you’ve wanted to attend. Alone time has been linked to improved stress management and greater life satisfaction, so it’s worth trying to give yourself more time.

Related: Turns Out, Those Who Like Being Alone Can Be More Creative

    10. Get active

Getting active can take on several directions. It can be physical, emotional or spiritual. The point is to engage with people and pursuits that feed your soul. Whether volunteering within your community, setting yourself an exercise goal, or learning more about personal development, there are endless ways to get active and invest in yourself this year.

  • 4 Ways Black Diversity Leaders Succeed, and How Executive Peers Can Make Sure They Do

4 Ways Black Diversity Leaders Succeed, and How Executive Peers Can Make Sure They Do

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

In a previous article, I explored several reasons Black diversity officers struggle and how their CEOs can help. That opens the door to more straight talk about how the leaders themselves can step into their success and how their executive colleagues can be part of that success story.

I focus on diversity leaders who identify as Black for three reasons: a majority of diversity leaders in America are Black, their Blackness matters and the opportunities they have are familiar to every diversity leader. At this point in history, inclusive leaders are learning to focus on race and keep other aspects of identity in view simultaneously.

Let’s look at four ways you, as a diversity leader — or as one of your executive peers — can thrive in this vital role.

    1. Ensure that the Diversity Leader’s role is scoped and resourced for achievement

The ‘DEI Why’ has to be clear and achievable. Yes, it’s crucial to have an aspirational vision for the work, but the successful DEI leader equips other leaders to build their point of view around DEI and lead more inclusively. When you are a high-performing Chief Diversity Officer, you lead a center of excellence that improves company results with talent and customers by reducing bias and generating opportunity.

So your success as a DEI leader is at serious risk if soaring expectations for what you will achieve languish from a laughably small budget and insufficient sponsorship.

The CEO and CHRO come in here, ensuring that the agenda, objectives, resources and metrics owned by the diversity leader are reasonable, impactful and communicated. Like any investment, the right team and an actual budget will produce returns.

Every executive peer to a diversity leader should be asking a behavioral question: How am I substantively supporting our CDO’s success?

Related: These Are the Biggest Blind Spots in Diversity Initiatives, According to 8 Women Experts

    2. The organization is investing in the Diversity Leader’s development

Diversity leaders get to improve like every employee. The right commitment to a Black CDO’s growth includes two investments:

    • Business Savvy — Integrate the CDO into the business’s goals, challenges and budgeting core, certainly in policy development, key customer relationships and strategy building with the Board. Center DEI in the company by centering the senior diversity leader in how decisions are made and resources are assigned.
    • Competency Building — Every executive has room to grow. CDOs need active, personal guidance for establishing their brand, optimizing their strengths and minimizing their shortcomings. Black diversity leaders, in particular, require empathetic and honest feedback because white colleagues, in particular, may have been afraid to provide them with the right mix of praise and coaching for improvement. If you’re a white executive like me, commit to care and honesty to grow a relationship of trust with your CDO.

    3. The Diversity Leader relies on influence partners

The critical context for executive success is peer relationship quality, especially for Black DEI leaders. If trust is “the making and keeping of promises over time and across differences,” and accountability is “behaving in ways that grow trust,” then it is no surprise that diversity leaders of every identity thrive when surrounded by high-trust relationships with their peers in senior leadership.

You know you’re an influence partner for your CDO when you’re asking yourself two questions: How can I follow their expertise and leadership to become a more effective and inclusive leader myself? In what other ways am I supporting her success?

One of my favorite metrics, especially if you are a black CDO, is the number of executives influence partners you enjoy.

Related: 7 Ways Leaders Can Level Up Their DEI Workplace Strategy

    4. The Diversity Leader is disciplined about self-care and leads with an authentic voice

I’m speaking directly to Diversity Leaders here: You know it’s going well when you’re not struggling to care for yourself, and people are listening to you. You succeed when work is not overwhelming, your voice and agency are growing, and your self-doubt finds little traction. Personal renewal is a challenge for every senior leader — for every adult human, for that matter — and the amount of energy you are spending to remember to care for yourself and then doing so is an excellent indicator of your efficacy as a DEI leader.

To those who serve as an influence partner to a Black CDO in particular, I offer this: attend to their wellness as friends and colleagues. Are they taking vacations? Are they working 60 or more hours every week? Do you regularly hear them laugh? Are their teams hitting deadlines and generating good ideas? The pandemic is teaching us to lead with genuine empathy, and diversity leaders in your organization deserve as much honest care as you can.

The senior diversity leader in your firm, and their team, embody and lead the organization’s commitment to DEI as a strategy to dramatically grow the company’s performance and character. If you’re in such a role, dial into your success factors, and deprioritize everything else. To focus like this, secure the support from those above you and a growing circle of your influence partners. And if you are a peer to a Chief Diversity Officer, you can play a key role in her success.

When diversity executives thrive, the DEI initiative produces results for the business. So we need our CDOs to succeed. Each one of us can help that happen.

  • 3 Easy Ways to Gain Confidence

3 Easy Ways to Gain Confidence

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

As rises, financial confidence declines. According to a recent New York Life survey, 62% of Americans are financially confident, down from 69% in January. Given the current period of high inflation, Americans are faced with more financial uncertainty than ever before. But how can we combat this?

“Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.” – Roy T Bennett.

This quote is easier to read than follow! However, in the spirit of regaining power in an economic market that can leave us feeling powerless, here are three great steps that can orient us toward a greater sense of personal and financial confidence:

    1. Make efficient decisions
    2. Follow through with a realistic plan
    3. Have the willpower to take control

As an investor, you cannot control the stock market or the rising gas prices. But you are in the driver’s seat with your self-awareness, self-assurance and self-determination. Confidence is about acceptance and belief in your strengths, skills and abilities. It is not innate; it can be grown and refined over time.

Here are three guiding attributes that are foundational to confidence. Building insight into these concepts can empower you to strive for financial freedom and help you thrive in all aspects of your life.

    1. Self-awareness

    Personal

Setbacks and obstacles are why we stop in our tracks, as we often focus on the negative outcomes which stunt us. To feel growth, we need to see and believe in our abilities to succeed and progress.

One technique to help attain self-awareness is journaling. I know journaling feels like such an unrealistic task, but it doesn’t have to be an elaborate process if you don’t want it to be. It can be as simple as reaching for your phone to take notes when you see, hear or think about something that moves and inspires you. It really can be as easy as taking a screenshot of something that elicits deep emotion for you or jotting down a memory or reflection. The goal is to connect with thoughts and emotions within us that we would typically move on from. When we journal, we give them space to develop. I keep a notes tab on my phone, a physical journal on my nightstand and a photo folder on my phone that has stored quotes, photos or videos that inspire confidence and in me.

Another technique can be as simple as setting a time every morning, even just one minute, to be reflective and set an intention for yourself for the day. There is no wrong way to start. You have to give yourself the chance to create this growth by taking proactive steps toward building your self-awareness.

    Financial

As you gather more information on a topic, you acquire more knowledge. Still, when it comes to Financial Self-Awareness (FSA), it is a little less about financial literacy in general and more about your financial situation. Many people can recite books or the ratios and formulas for excellent investment advice, but if you don’t know what your net worth is today, how can you make decisions about your future?

Take some time to jot down your past successes and failures with money; this will give you clarity on your “why.” Once you have reviewed and developed a deeper understanding of your financial history, you can move forward with making the necessary decisions to reach your present and future goals. This clarity and intentionality will assist you in building more confidence.

    2. Self-assurance

    Personal

This level of self-esteem is not built around knowing you are always right; it’s about being able to get up after you fall and still move forward. We all have strengths, so leverage them and ensure you are implementing them daily. We also all have moments of doubt, and we can move forward by harnessing the moments of assurance from revisiting our accomplishments. When was your last moment of success? Think of anything from gathering the courage to have a difficult conversation with someone in your life to finishing a painting, a book or a degree. Accomplishments come in all sizes, so celebrate them and often remind yourself of your successes.

    Financial

Historically, money has been a taboo subject, especially for women. I grew up thinking it was rude or inappropriate to talk about money. As I got older, I (thankfully) stopped following that rule, which made me look for more information and continue to learn and understand it. Most people don’t talk about it enough, which is one of the reasons why most people have poor money management skills. This then turns into shame and embarrassment, which can keep us from being honest about money and seeking the right help. The more you talk about money, the more comfortable you’ll feel; consistency is essential. Having a financial plan might sound like a hassle at first, but it will save you from multiple headaches in the future. A financial plan gives you a goal that you can track and ultimately increase your economic confidence.

    3. Self-determination

    Personal

Determination is usually tied to actions like “I am determined to learn another language, ” which requires steps to accomplish. This is precisely what self-determination is: building a set of skills to reach those goals.

What skills do you need to build on most? Here are a few to think about: Decision-making, problem-solving, goal-setting and self-advocacy. Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan developed a theory of motivation that suggested that people tend to be driven by a need to grow and gain fulfillment. Building life skills that escalate your knowledge allows for the independence you seek, and also increased relationships and interactions with others will lead to high self-determination.

    Financial

Take control of your financial journey by allowing yourself flexibility. Confidence is about understanding your strengths and weaknesses, which change over time. It is okay not to be an expert in all things finance; there are experts in the field who outsource help from others. Stay on top of your finances using financial tools like apps and calendar reminders.

Looking to save more money? Use a budgeting app like Mint and schedule a time to revisit your budget regularly. A visual representation of your goals and progress will help you stay on track and motivated.

According to a National Bureau of Economic Research study, nearly 80% of women struggle with low self-esteem and shy away from self-advocacy at work. This means four in five women may be held back in their career advancement by a lack of confidence and visibility. Let’s change these statistics and help each other increase our confidence. Remember that applying these steps takes practice. Start with what feels most comfortable and move on to the next. Becoming financially and personally confident will enable you to trust your abilities to manage your wealth and life fruitfully. Once you deepen your self-awareness, self-assurance and self-determination, it will become phenomenally easier to make efficient decisions, follow them with a plan of action and move with conviction. While inflation creates uncertainty for many, your financial confidence need not be wavered by outside factors.

Los Angeles Bride Launches Wellness, Self-Care Bridal Brand, the Mine Company, Following Toxic Bullying Experience

Designed Specifically for Brides, The Mine Company Offers a One-Stop-Shop Offering Self-Care Solutions to Encourage A Blissful Engagement

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 20, 2021

Kerry O’Donoghue, an identical triplet and entrepreneur living in Southern California, has officially launched a new wellness and self-care brand for brides, The Mine Company. Following a toxic wedding planning experience involving her family, coupled with delays due to the pandemic, O’Donoghue felt the stress of being a bride rose to a whole new level. Her own hostile experience and bouts of malicious bullying from her sisters led O’Donoghue to design a set of self-care products to uplift a bride’s mind, body, and spirit. Today, over five thousand brides have had brighter days in their engagement through The Mine Company’s line of bridal wellness products.

“My own personal situation with my family left me feeling very unsupported. However, this negative experience truly inspired me to do something that could help and support another bride in having the idyllic engagement they should be experiencing,” says O’Donoghue, Founder of The Mine Company. “Bringing change to the wedding industry is more imperative now than ever. Brides need proper wellness in their lives, and it all starts with self-care.”

The Mine Company offers a variety of natural and non-toxic beauty, self-care, and nutritional products. Key products include Crystal Clear Carats, a natural on-the-go ring cleaning pen, Bridal Glow Vitamins, daily gummy vitamins to support stronger hair, skin, and nails, and Bouquet Toss, a moisturizing rose petal bath bomb. Brides can experience all of The Mine Company’s top bridal wellness products with a purchase of their newly launched Bridal Self-Care Box. O’Donoghue also offers complimentary handwritten gift messages with every gift purchase.

“Self-care is not always a physical practice; it is an emotional one that is necessary for brides to transition into the next stage of their life with their head held high,” said O’Donoghue. “For me, self-care meant setting boundaries. My advice to brides is to remember to focus on yourself and be your own cheerleader, and you will be glowing when you finally have your day to walk down the aisle.”

10 Strategies for Surviving Christmas Season With Family

Note: I am writing this article from my perspective of the holiday season, which is very Christmas-centric. Having said that, I believe that at least some of these hints can be applied to other holiday celebrations.

The holidays are promoted, to an almost obnoxious level, as being a time of great joy and merriment. Families come around, delicious food is eaten, presents are exchanged, and a wonderful time is had by all.

    In theory.

In actuality, the reality is not so clear-cut. For many of us, the holiday season is one of the most stressful times of the year, for any number of reasons. Some of us have tense relationships with people we are obliged to spend time with during the holidays. Others dislike the way the holiday season deviates from our normal schedules. Still others associate the holidays with negative emotions and/or experiences.

I enjoy the holidays myself, but I would be lying if I said there haven’t been times when I’ve been anxious or stressed out despite all the festive cheer around me. To help me get through those difficult moments, I use the following ten tactics I’ve picked up over the years. It’s my hope that this advice will prove useful for you, too!

    1. Go Through Your Gifts

If your holiday celebrations involve giving and receiving gifts, you may find yourself with a collection of presents waiting to be given closer attention. And if you feel anxious, stressed, or sad at any point, you may find it therapeutic to sit down and give that collection of presents the attention it needs.

Perhaps you received a puzzle or game you want to try out. Maybe you got art supplies or something sports-related that you could test. Or you might have received gifts that you can spend time organising, putting away, or displaying. Spending time with your new possessions can be a useful way to step away, take a breath, and appreciate what you have been given.

    2. Prepare Drinks/Snacks

This is a particularly useful tactic when the need arises to step out, perhaps because the room has become too crowded or noisy, or the topic of conversation is upsetting to you.

Should you need to leave, ask if anybody needs a drink or snack refill. If you’re worried about looking rude or suspicious, the promise of bringing back nourishment for others could help assuage that worry. Also, the physical act of preparing drinks or snacks could help relieve some of the stress and anxiety you might be feeling.

    3. Have a Book, Game, or Craft Project Handy

I often had to go to big Christmas celebrations with masses of people when I was a child. I would frequently want to remain in the same space as the people I was with, but also not want to engage in conversation. If the other people weren’t bothered by this, I found that having a book or video game with me made that possible.

If the other people wanted me to at least appear as though I was a part of the conversation, I found that having a craft project with me (a cross-stitch or a work of crochet, for example) enabled me to look like I was involved without being fully involved. The best activity to have handy depends entirely on the situation. But the idea is to have a way to “leave” the space, all without physically leaving the space.

    4. Establish Banned Topics of Conversation

Some of us dread the holiday season because of the possibility for certain topics of conversation — topics that upset us greatly — to be brought up. These topics could be anything, but some of the more common ones I have come across include dieting and weight loss, religion, federal politics, and problematic acquaintances.

If there are conversation topics you don’t want discussed while you’re around, I would highly recommend requesting that those topics be banned ahead of time. Alternatively, if you don’t feel confident requesting the ban yourself, you could recruit somebody you trust to request it for you.

I realise this may sound like a drastic measure to some, and it might be impossible for others, but if you’re able to do it, it could save you a lot of unnecessary distress.

    5. Tell Your Family and Friends How You’re Feeling

If you’re lucky enough to spend your holidays with people you trust with your emotions, being honest and telling them how you’re feeling might be hugely beneficial. Explain that you’re not feeling well, explain why (if you can), and let them know if there’s anything they can do. Sometimes the simple act of talking about our feelings is enough to relieve them. If the feelings are still there, at least now other people know and might be able to help.

Unfortunately, many people do not get to spend their holidays with people they trust. If that is the case, the next tactic might be more useful.

    6. Have a Friend on Contactable Standby

Some of us are obligated to spend our holidays in places, or with people, that cause us distress. If that sounds like you, one thing you might find helpful is to have somebody you trust whom you can contact. You may only be able to contact them by text, or by a daily phone call, but as long as there’s some sort of connection between the two of you, this tactic should work.

The idea is that you keep connected to somebody you trust, somebody who represents safety, while you are away. This will hopefully relieve some of your holiday stress.

    7. Spend Time with a Trustworthy Person

I have anxiety troubles myself, and my anxiety can come forward at random moments during the holiday season. When that happens, I like to ask my brother to play a board game with me. Why do I ask my brother? Because he is a fun person to be around, he cheers me up, and I know he won’t do or say anything that will make me more anxious. Board games happen to be an activity that my brother and I enjoy doing together, but any sort of joint activity with a trustworthy person will achieve the same result.

    8. Have a Nap

Sometimes everything about the holidays is too much, and the best solution is to take a break from them for a short period of time. If you are the sort of person who falls asleep easily, then a nap is probably the best, safest, and healthiest way to take that break. Napping also has the benefit of refreshing the body and mind, so the holiday season may be easier to handle once you wake up.

    9. Go for a Walk

Following the point above, you might need to take a break from the holidays but not be able to easily fall asleep. If that is the case, walking is another alternative. The act of putting on shoes, going outside, breathing in the fresh air and pounding the pavement offers a brief change of perspective that you might find beneficial. Additionally, the feeling of your body moving, and the fresher air getting into your lungs, could help to work out some of your holiday stress.

    10. Stick to Your Routine as Much as Possible

Many people find comfort and stability in our routines. The holiday season tends to force us to deviate from our routines, which can be destabilising and, consequently, stressful. If you are somebody who functions better with routine, the holiday season might be less stressful if you stick to your routine as well as you can.

Try to do things like wake up at your normal time, do your regular exercise, eat your standard breakfast (as opposed to fancy “holiday” breakfasts), make your bed, check your email, and so on. You might find that you only need to do a few specific things to feel like you’re sticking to your routine, or you might find that you need to follow your routine to the maximum. Whatever it takes, if you can achieve that same sense of stability your routine usually provides, that should reduce your stress levels.

The holidays are a challenging time for a lot of us. But if you have some strategies in place to help you see them through, they hopefully will not be as challenging as they otherwise could be. As always, the most important thing is that you take care of yourself.

    Happy holidays, everybody.
