  • Unfortunately, I Finished Watching The Idol

Unfortunately, I Finished Watching The Idol

    [ad_1]

I mentioned in my last article about
The Idol that I felt this sick curiosity as a writer to watch the show. If you didn’t gather from my review of episodes 1-3, I was quickly reminded why sometimes you need to listen to the general public. Sam Levinson and The Weeknd’s Max original is something of a car wreck, and (SPOILER ALERT!) episodes 4 and 5 are much worse, for different reasons.

Sure the final two episodes of what should’ve been a 6-episode series had much less focus on sex and nudity…but I quickly learned –
at what cost? I took two full pages of notes while watching, so I’ll include some of my candid, raw reactions. But, the show turned sickeningly unbearable. I’m borderline offended by it?

I mean, with cast members like Jane Adams telling the feminists (I guess me in this circumstance) to
“go f*** yourself,” I can imagine the feeling is quite mutual at this rate. Poor, misunderstood Sam Levinson created a show so artistically advanced that the entire world didn’t understand it! Ever wonder if it was just bad and that’s why people don’t get it?

Whatever. Back by popular demand, here are all my thoughts while watching the final two episodes of The Idol. Pray for me, and you’re welcome.

    The Idol, Episode 4 Recap

We see that Tedros (The Weeknd, Abel Tesfaye, I don’t know anymore) has completely taken over Jocelyn’s estate. However, good news! The team is
officially convinced that he’s up to no good. Hallelujah, surely they’ll do nothing.

They even approach Joss and say his real name is Mauricio Jackson and he was charged for kidnapping his ex, holding her hostage, and beating her. I know, pretend you’re shocked that the guy with the rat tail did this. Anyways, Joss ignores feminism entirely and says he’s simply misunderstood. Aren’t we all?

Seriously, the most infuriating part about the show is that no one has a backbone. More on that later.

So one of Joss’ team goes to one of Tedros’ minions, Chloe, who has a wonderful singing voice. The catch? Tedros found her while she was addicted to heroin and she claims she’s 18, but we all know the truth there.

They’re all at Joss’ mansion to record music together, but
naturally Joss’ track is missing something. So, in front of an entire crowd of record executives and this cult, Tedros starts to — I can’t bring myself to write it but just know he performs a sexual act on her. To which her agent says on the phone, “Jocelyn is on some weird S&M shit with this dude,” the only honest musing in the show.

So let’s get to the point, what everyone’s talking about: Troye Sivan’s torture scene. Troye is obviously a great singer, so The Weeknd hides in his room while he showers and sings to himself and asks why he claims he tore his vocal chords. Dumb Troye’s character, Xander, decides to
tell the truth (???) and say Jocelyn was basically jealous and her mom outed him and he never sang again.

What’s the only viable option that happens here? The Weeknd tells Jocelyn and they start shocking him despite his pleas for help. But the main point of the episode is only to tell you that everyone is spiraling.

    The Idol, Episode 5 Recap

At the end of episode 4, JENNIE from BLACKPINK shows up to Jocelyn’s and Chloe, on molly, spills that Tedros and JENNIE, who just stole “World Class Sinner” from Joss, were an item. Essentially, this is us learning Tedros was trying to infringe on Joss’ fame the whole time.

Big whoop, if that weren’t clear from episode one then I don’t know what to say. Literally
he has a rat tail and you’re supposed to be shocked that he was using her?!! So episode 5 starts with Jocelyn trying to kick Tedros out of the house and keep his artists.

This was like the one moment of the show where I ever felt proud or anything other than immense, overwhelming hatred for every character. But I knew, deep down in the depths of my soul, they were going to let me down.

If you strip down the bad acting, this show is pure comedy. It’s like The Office but what’s funnier is that Sam Levinson and The Weeknd meant for this show to be serious.

But what’s even better is that it takes five minutes for Tedros to insert his ugly tail back in the picture. At the party the night before, Jocelyn proceeds to invite her ex over to make Tedros jealous and obviously the natural reaction is for Tedros to frame him for sexual assault.

Of course this is handled in an offensive, not even funny or ironic matter. No one tells Jocelyn this, but the assistant goes to Xander and asks if she knows what’s happening. To which newly brainwashed Xander said
of course Joss knows. Because evil, evil Joss loves covering up sexual assault?

So this begins the downfall of Tedros. The agents get him, something about the IRS, there’s a speech about hunting the Big Bad Wolf, Josselyn saves her tour, and the final scene is at So-Fi Stadium, where Tedros’ people are her opening act alongside Xander and Tedro’s minions. Joss’ team is cackling about how they ended him.

Mauricio Jackson is then let into the stadium with an artist pass for Jocelyn, which makes no sense considering she’s the technical reason he was exposed. Tedros goes backstage and picks up the hair brush her mother beat her with and realizes it’s brand new.

What they want you to think is that Josselyn was the manipulator all along- stealing Tedros’ people and making him think he’s all that just to whittle him back down to broke ass Mauricio Jackson. JENNIE also couldn’t record “World Class Sinner”, so Joss keeps that, too. She’s the evil of the show, not Tedros, he was just a victim.

    @drophiltv2023#selenagomez#theweeknd#theidol#parati#paratii#paratiii#paratitiktok#fyp#foryou♬ original sound – Culture

I have to laugh. Truly. Because of the flippant ways they throw sexual assault and victim’s stories around, and because of the way they treat consent, and also because the writing was so awful that the show was doomed from the beginning. And to think these pompous actors are defending this train wreck and calling for a season two?

Gaslighting is when people make you think The Idol is good and you just “didn’t understand it.” Honesty is realizing this show is vile down to its core.

Selena Gomez’s little sister Gracie is in her Speak Now era.

It appears the originally-released 2010 album is the 10-year-old’s favourite from Taylor Swift as she showed her big sister’s bestie some love by dying her hair purple in honour of the recently-released re-reordered version of the record. The album cover is famous for its purple theme.

Gomez, 30, followed up by asking Gracie if she’ll ever dye her hair for her sister’s album.

Taylor Swift Shared New Photos With Selena Gomez From Fourth of July

    [ad_1]

Neither Taylor Swift nor Selena Gomez are strangers to their drama making headlines, whether it’s due to a breakup or a public feud. But throughout their careers, they’ve never stopped publicly supporting each other. Since becoming friends while both dating Jonas brothers in 2008, they’ve danced at awards shows, performed onstage together, and most recently, hyped the other’s new music. Swift even made a surprise appearance on Gomez’s new HBO Max cooking show Selena + Chef. Even though the pandemic caused the duo to see less of each other, their friendship is still going strong.

Below, relive a celeb bond that’s built to last.

    2008

In a 2017 interview with KIIS FM UK, Gomez opened up about how she and Swift met, and it’s rooted in the early days of their careers. “We actually dated the Jonas Brothers together! It was hysterical,” Gomez told the hosts, referring to her relationship with Nick and Swift’s with Joe. “It was amazing, because she was the girl with the big curly hair and all the bracelets and the cowboy boots. And I was definitely up-and-coming, and we just clicked,” she added. “It was the best thing we got out of those relationships.”

    October 2009

In an interview with Seventeen, Gomez was asked who she turns to for love advice. (She was rumored to be dating Taylor Lautner months before he would briefly date Swift.) Every single problem I ever have is healable by Taylor Swift,” she said. “If I ever I have an issue, Taylor has gone through it, because she’s older than me, and she gives the most thought-out answers. And what I love about Taylor is that she does believe in the whole love story and Prince Charming and soul mates. Because of her, I haven’t lost faith. We literally talk every day.”

    January 2011

Gomez later captioned a photo of the pair performing, “After nearly 8 years of friendship, I just can’t wait to tell our kids we ACTUALLY got to perform in front of thousands of insanely beautiful people together. TWICE! I love you Tay. #bestnightEVER #whatISlife.”

Gomez shared a photo of herself and Swift hanging out with pals Gigi Hadid and Lily Aldridge on Instagram. “@taylorswift -we just show up. Thank you for making us and all beautiful women feel beautiful,” she captioned the photo.

The following month, Gomez celebrated Swift’s birthday with a sweet throwback post on IG. “I don’t know life without you Taylor,” she wrote. “Happy birthday!”

    January 2016

At the start of the year, the friends had fun recreating a scene from Swift’s 1989 song, “Out of the Woods.” Gomez used Swift’s lyrics by captioning the post, “Are we in the clear yet?”

    February 2016

Gomez was by Swift’s side at the 2016 Grammy Awards, where the latter won Album of the Year for 1989. In her speech, Swift seemingly referenced Kanye West’s recently released song, “Famous,” which contains the lyrics, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous.” Swift said while accepting, “I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but… someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there…”

    December 2017

In 2017, Gomez and Swift’s friendship was kept pretty quiet, other than eagle-eyed fans spotting a Swift easter egg in an episode of 13 Reasons Why, which Gomez produces. She also can be seen in Gomez’s “Bad Liar” music video.

But at the end of the year, Gomez publicly honored Swift’s 28th birthday with a small video and touching caption. “I’m glad you were born,” she wrote on Instagram. “You write all the thoughts some aren’t able to articulate. (ME!) Thank you for giving a voice to this world that is authentic and inspiring. I wish some knew how big your heart actually is.. it’s fierce, bold and freaking wild with light. I’m glad you protect that. Love you @taylorswift.”

Fans later pointed out that Gomez had inadvertently placed an Easter egg for Swift’s first single off of Lover in her caption.

    May 2018

At the Rose Bowl stop of Swift’s reputation tour, the duo performed “Hands to Myself.” Swift later wrote about the moment on Instagram, “To the person I could call at any time of day, who has been there no matter what… you absolutely KILLED IT tonight and everyone was so excited to see you. I love you, and 60,000 people at the Rose Bowl loved you too.”

After the performance Gomez gave a moving speech about her friendship with Swift to the thousands in attendance:

“Are you guys having a good night? I have to say thank you to my best friend of about 12 years, almost 13, and the reason why she has been one of my best friends is because this person has never ever judged a single decision I’ve made. She’s always met me where I’ve been. She’s encouraged me when I’ve had nothing to be encouraged about, and I don’t know if I would be as strong as I am if I didn’t have you and your family because you’ve changed my life. And—she’s going to kill me after—but honestly, thank you for the bottom of my heart for supporting someone who I know is the most beautiful, strong, independent woman I’ve ever met. So thank you as a best friend.”

Gomez captioned pictures from the evening, “I’m grateful for those I surround myself with. And this woman right here happens to be one of my favorites. Love our tradition and I love you.”

    December 2018

Gomez supported Swift’s album Reputation once more by wearing some tour merch while skiing with friends.

    January 2019

At the start of the year, Swift and Gomez seemingly welcomed another friend into their circle, Cazzie David. 20wineteen,” Swift captioned a blurry photo of the trio drinking white wine.

A source told E! at the time that Gomez “really leans on Taylor and considers her one of her best friends,” particularly in the aftermath of her treatment for her mental health.

“Selena and Taylor have been in touch since Selena left her treatment and are very close,” the source added. “Taylor has reached out several times and has shown her support and love.” The two are in a “really good place” and remain close despite consistent travel for work.

    July 2019

Then came Swift’s drama with Scooter Braun, Bieber’s manager, who acquired the rights to her music catalog (first six albums’ masters) from Big Machine Label with his purchase of the record company. Swift penned an open letter, calling the situation the “worst case scenario.” Then Bieber posted his own response. In turn, Swift took to Tumblr to seemingly confirm that Bieber had cheated on Gomez.

She liked a Tumblr post that said, “‘we haven’t gotten to communicate our differences’ you cheated on her best friend and then publicly sided with the man who made revenge porn against her was she supposed to invite you over for tea??? Fuck outta here.”

After the late October release of Gomez’s new single “Lose You to Love Me,” Swift praised the song on Instagram. “This song is a perfect expression of healing and my absolute favorite song she’s put out yet. A triumph,” Swift wrote on her stories, which Gomez posted to her own.

Swift also expressed her excitement during an interview on New Music Daily With Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1. “She came over, she played me the video. I’m so proud of her,” she said. “She’s been through so much. I’ve watched so much happen in her life and had a front row seat to so much, and I’m so proud of her. She is such a revelation because now she’s making her best stuff.” Swift added:

“I am 100 percent convinced this is the best thing she’s done so far,” she continued. “Just from my perspective as her friend, I’ve just never been more proud. The things that she’s overcome, the situations that she’s risen above. It’s been a long time that we’ve been friends, and she’s the best. I’m really excited because when somebody has had great life experience, has had really tough things they’ve had to go through, and they can process that and make art that’s going to help other people, that’s what kind of song this is.”

A potential snag in Swift and Gomez’s friendship came a few days later when Gomez seemingly plugged Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS shapewear line on IG stories. “Legit so freaking comfortable @skims,” she wrote over a photo of herself wearing a pair.

Hours later, that photo had been taken down and replaced with a Swift appreciation post. “My ride or die. I would die for this one,” Gomez wrote over a selfie of the pair and one of Swift’s cats. “Thank you for being by my side. You have taught me so much, walked through all of this with me, STAYED and you remind me to be a better human being. I’m on your side for life.”

After years of friendship, a Gomez-Swift duet could be on its way. On the Shelley Rome radio show, Gomez was asked if her and Swift ever had plans to collaborate musically. “Yeah! I mean super casual,” she said. “We’ve never been like no or never talked about it. It’ll happen when it happens, if it does there’s no pressure. She’s been my friend for 13 years. It would be awesome.”

Later that month, Gomez stepped into the drama surrounding Swift, Big Machine Records’ CEO Scott Borchetta, and Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun. Swift penned an open letter airing her grievances with her former label and new owner of her first six albums. This prompted Gomez to release her own statement on the matter, via her Instagram Story.

Her statement in defense of Swift read:

My heart is so heavy right now. It makes me sick and extremely angry. (I don’t mind if there may be retaliation) this is my opinion. It’s greed, manipulation, and power. There is no heart or thought of anyone else. No respect for the words my friend has written since she was a 14-year-old in her bedroom.

You’ve robbed and crushed one of our best song writers of our time an opportunity to celebrate all of her music with her fans and the world.

I have known Taylor for 13 years. She is the most dedicated, fearless, fiesty [sic], strongest woman I’ve ever known. People can say bitch but what I’m saying to you is that’s called a woman with true identity and strength who takes no shit. I listened to fearless before it came out and I just remember us jumping on a bed and she was just sparkling. ✨ -so proud of her diary being read by the whole world. Nervous of people not liking it… but that became one of the biggest records – an album that saved so many young woman who felt alone. Have a broken heart. Who were healing. Those who felt invisible. Gave a voice to those who didn’t know that they had one all along. Believing in dreams again. I continued to see how she has constantly challenged her self to create a beautiful life that belong to just her. So I can tell you first hand the MOST important thing to Taylor is her family, love, her fans, and her MUSIC. I really hope there is a change of heart over this unfortunate situation.

Seeing my best friend (or any of my friends) be constantly pulled down is the worst feeling. Taylor fights. She will never stop fighting. People grow from choices. Some will stay exactly the same. I just want a change of heart. I love you.

    December 2019

Although Gomez wasn’t able to attend Swift’s Christmas-themed 30th birthday party while promoting her new album in Paris, she did write her a heartfelt tribute on social media. “Love living many many many years of life with you. You mean the world to me. You help me become better everyday. Happy 30th, @taylorswift,” she wrote. Swift reposted the message on her own Instagram Story and added an “I love you” sticker.

One of the interviews to emerge from Gomez’s press tour for Rare revealed Swift had gotten emotional when listening to Bieber breakup songs from the record. Gomez recounted the experience of playing “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now” for Swift and her mother, Andrea to KISS UK. “I was with her when I played her some of it,” Gomez began. “I’ll never forget when I did play the video for ‘Lose You to Love Me’ and ‘Look at Her Now’ at her house with her parents, and it was one of the coolest experiences because I’ve been friends with her for over a decade and love her family as well so I was like, ‘Do you just maybe see the video?’ and she’s like, ‘Amazing, of course.’ It was so hysterical. She just started turning off every single light off in the kitchen. And I was like, ‘This is not that intense, Taylor.’”

Gomez continued, “And then she played it and her and her mom just started crying. Like, just tears and tears and all of a sudden, it stopped, and it’s going to make me cry thinking about it because it wasn’t about how great the song was—which is a lot, coming from her—it was just that they had been on that journey with me intimately, and they were crying because of how proud they were for me stepping into a whole new era of my life and it not involving the horrible things—the abuse, the emotional chaos. It felt like I had a huge sigh of relief and to see her and her mom feel that way, it was very sweet. It’s like an older sister and an aunt proud of their [friend]. It felt great to have people I love see it as that.”

    January 2020

Gomez wasn’t by Swift’s side for her PDA-filled Golden Globes date with Joe Alwyn. But there was no need to worry about the pair’s close bond. In a new interview with WSJ magazine, both Gomez and Swift spoke about their longtime friendship. Gomez confirmed that they had become pals while both dating Jonas Brothers—Swift with Joe Jonas and Gomez with Nick. “We clicked instantly and, man, that was my girl,” Gomez remembered. She later added, “We both went through sh*t at the same time. She taught me a lot about how I should be treated at a young age.”

Swift felt similarly about Gomez. “There has always been this quality of sisterhood, and I don’t say that in a basic way,” Swift said. “I knew from when I met her, I would always have her back. In my life, I have the ability to forgive people who have hurt me. But I don’t know if I can forgive someone who hurts her.”

Gomez said that while some may feel like they understand her friendship with Swift, it’s more private than it looks. “There’s so much of my friendship with Taylor that people don’t know about because we don’t necessarily feel the need to post about everything we do,” she explained. “She has showed up for me in ways that I would have never expected. Flown in because I was hurt and was going through something. Stuff that was going on with my family. It’s been proven year after year and in every moment of my life that she is one of my best friends in the world. We don’t agree on everything, but we respect each other with everything.”

And prior to the release of Rare, Gomez said Swift supported her new music implicitly. “I remember Taylor said when I played her some of the new songs, ‘I feel like I’m seeing who you were before this [the Justin Bieber heartbreak and everything].’ That makes me happy. I like feeling like that girl again,” Gomez revealed.

When it came time for the January 10 release of Rare, Swift was quick to publicly congratulate Gomez. “Congratulations to @selenagomez and everyone who had a hand in creating this…Make sure to buy/stream/support this work of art and the beautiful soul who created it,” Swift wrote on her Instagram Story. Gomez posted a screenshot of Swift’s story on her own Instagram.

Gomez praised Swift’s songwriting abilities with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio show. She highlighted “Lover,” saying, “There’s nothing really to say other than this is another song that shows her ability to take it back to the old, to also combine it with her challenging to do new things with her music.” Gomez added, “I’ll always, not even biased, just think she is one of the greatest songwriters.”

    July 2020

Another day, another project to support. When Swift surprise-dropped her eighth album folklore, Gomez was one of the first celebrities celebrating it on Instagram. “She’s done it again @taylorswift,” Gomez wrote on her Instagram Story alongside a screenshot of Swift’s new song “cardigan” and pink bow emoji.

Gomez’s Animal Crossing villager made a virtual appearance Animal Talking with Gary Whitta live-stream show early this month. During her appearance, she revealed that she’s working on a new album—and it could involve a Swift collaboration. When asked about her dream artist to work with, Gomez replied, “I’ll say there’s a few artists for sure, but I’ve always dreamt of doing a song with Taylor. I mean, we both wanted to do that. It’s just—everything remains in our friendship, you know? And so, it’s so—It just feels like we’re family. I’ve known her for 13 or 14 years now. So she’s been my best friend. But we’ve talked about it for sure.”

Gomez launched her latest TV project—her new HBO Max cooking show Selena + Chef in August 2020. During the fourth episode, she casually called up a friend while making Korean BBQ short rib breakfast tacos with chef Roy Choi. That pal turned out to be none other than Swift. “I’m gonna show my friend really quick. I’ve been telling all of my friends that I’ve been doing this. Out of everything that I’ve done in my career, this is the most outstanding thing I’ve done,” Gomez began before revealing Swift on FaceTime.

When Gomez showed her culinary creation to Swift, the singer responded, “Dude, I’m so proud of you. Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you to become obsessed with cooking?”

Gomez added, “She’s like my big cooking person. It’s a very big deal that I’m learning how to cook, and it’s good for our friendship.”

    February 2021

On February 12, Gomez congratulated Swift on the release of Swift’s re-recording of her 2009 song “Love Story.” (Swift is re-recording her first six albums now that she is legally allowed so she can have full ownership of them.)

Gomez wrote, “So proud of you, as always, Tay…LISTEN to THIS album ❤️.” Gomez emphasized “THIS” in her post to make sure fans listen to Swift’s re-recording of her second album, Fearless.

    [ad_1]

Selena Gomez was all business last week when she touched down in Paris for an exclusive Rare Beauty event she hosted with Sephora. Clad in a black-and-white look from Chanel’s 2023 Resort collection, Gomez paid homage to the iconic striped Sephora bag and totally nailed the French-Girl chic formula

While Gomez’s outfit is from Chanel, it’s a look that’s easy to re-create by mixing and matching items that are likely already inside your closet. Pair a sleek white button-down shirt with a waist-defining A-line skirt, for example. Naturally, the quality of the shirt is vital—silk is ideal, but a sharply pressed Oxford works just as well. However, it’s the A-line miniskirt that really adds a certain je ne c’est quoi to the look. It can easily be dressed up or down and appears equally appropriate for a business meeting or celebratory event. Opt for heels, as seen below, or pair the skirt with loafers for a more academic flare. There are unlimited possibilities, and it’s impossible to go wrong.

With that in mind, we’ve selected 14 of the best A-line miniskirts to help anyone nail this French look

Hailey Bieber stepped out on a romantic date night with Justin Bieber in a fancy New York City restaurant.

Earlier this week, the 26 year old model held a high-end celebration for her skincare brand Rhode’s one year anniversary. She looked glamorous in a Vivienne Westwood Couture pink bejeweled mini dress. This dress had a deep plunging neckline and was covered in rose pink Swarovski crystals. She accessorized her look with transparent nude heels and jewelry from Tiffany & Co. Justin Bieber also sent her wife a lovely bouquet and heartwarming message to congratulate her on the one year anniversary of Rhode.

Here is everything to know about Hailey and Justin Bieber’s recent date night in NYC.

Hailey Bieber stepped out on date with Justin Bieber

Hailey Bieber recently stepped out on a date night with her husband Justin Bieber and her fashion game was on the point.  Hailey and Justin were photographed on a romantic date in New York City’s West Village neighborhood.

The 27 year old model stunned in a bubblegum pink satin slip dress with visible stitching on bodice and 90s style spaghetti straps. She paired her outfit with a black pointed-toe slingback and matching leather shoulder bag. She opted for layered gold and diamond necklaces along with small diamond studs. Hailey Bieber opted for her standard hairstyle, slicked back bun and kept her makeup look minimal with glossy pink lips and natural blush.

On the other hand, Justin Bieber was looking casual in a black t-shirt that he paired with light wash jeans and white shoes. The singer added a brown cap with an added chin strap.

Recently, Hailey Bieber also showed her support to Selena Gomez by liking her post. She also urged fans to not post mean comments and rude messages on other’s pictures.

Selena Gomez Shares the Score at Soccer Game: “I’m Single!”

    [ad_1]

Olé, olé, oh hey, Selena Gomez is single, if you were wondering. She’s not quite shouting it from the rooftops, but she is shouting it from the sidelines of what appears to be a recreational soccer game in Los Angeles.

Gomez made it clear that she’s ready to love you like a love song, baby, by posting a TikTok to her account Thursday. In the video, she yells, “I’m single! I’m just a little high-maintenance! But I’ll love you soooooo much!” at a group of men playing soccer in the distance.

    TikTok content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

“The struggle man lol” the 30-year-old actor/singer captioned the video.

She only speaks (bellows) 14 words in the video (if we’re counting “high-maintenance” as two words, as we’re sure it would demand, high-maintenance as it is), but her insulation-count appears to be almost as high as her word count. It’s big Cold Girl Energy. I spy a coat, an enormous beige scarf that could probably double as a toddler’s duvet, a fluffy black and white blanket in her lap, and is that another quilted puffy blanket I see peeking out from under the fuzzy blanket? I do believe it is. Imagine the trunk of her car, yanking all of these things out, one after another, like a magician doing that trick where they pull a ton of scarves out of some kid’s ear. It’s a good thing she has her blazing passion for the game of fútbol to keep her warm, alongside all those accessories.

This is just Gomez’s latest way of poking fun at her romantic life, amidst endless rumors about who she might be smooching and fans who just won’t let go of her past romance with Justin Bieber. When Gomez made her Saturday Night Live hosting debut last month, she joked in her opening monologue that “I’m single and I’ve heard that SNL is a great place to find romance,” citing examples of stars like Colin Jost who have met their matches on the show.

“Since I don’t really want to try the dating apps, I just want to put it out in the universe that I’m manifesting love,” she said. “I’d like to say that I’m looking for my soulmate, but at this point, I’d take anyone.”

Ask any soccer player: It’s good to have a goal.

Gomez often updates her fans about her life on social media by sharing pictures and videos.

Selena Gomez recently took to her Instagram to post some pictures of herself having a day out with one of her friends. At an outdoor cafe, she was seen relishing a chocolate chip ice cream cone filled with chocolates and nuts on it. For the outing, she wore a Balenciaga turtleneck sweatshirt along with blue Daisy Duke denim shorts. The 30-year-old singer looked uber cool as she completed her look with bold silver hoop earrings. She showed off her toned body as she enjoyed the day out sitting on a blue chair at the cafe.

The Calm Down singer was seen with one of her female friends who opted for a cute outfit featuring a camel colored coat over a leopard-print shirt. Taking to her Instagram, Selena captioned her photos, “Ice cream chillin.”

Fans react to Selena Gomez’s post

Fans filled the comment with lovely words the moment Gomez uploaded her pictures. One fan wrote, “look so good yeah look so sweet baby you deserve a treat,” while the other said, “The earth got hotter after this post.” A third one commented, “Cute” while several fans dropped fire and red heart emojis.

However, the date and time these photos were taken is unknown. It is also suggested that the pictures were clicked a long time ago but shared by Gomez on the occasion of National Best Friends Day.

Meanwhile, earlier Selena revealed that the photo-sharing app puts a lot of pressure on people to conform and resists them from actually celebrating. It does not have uniqueness. In an interview with Daily Mail, she was asked what she would do to get rid of Instagram entirely. Replying to the same, the singer said, “I think I’d have a lot of people not liking me for saying yes. If I could find a balanced, happy medium that would be great, but I would be lying if I said that it isn’t destroying some of my generation’s identity.”

Selena Gomez Has Tense Exchange With Security At Beyonce Concert

    [ad_1]

Fans caught the “Only Murders in the Building” actor shouting at one of the people escorting her into the show in video shared on TikTok.

While the video doesn’t show what prompted the argument, the poster said the star was angry at the guard from keeping her from talking to fans. It was unclear whether the man was part of her team or working for the stadium.

Another clip posted on Twitter appeared to provide some more context, showing the star breezing past fans while smiling and giving high-fives.

That video didn’t show whether she interacted with fans before or after the tense chat, however.

HuffPost has reached out to Gomez’s team for comment.

Gomez’s conflict at the concert echoed aspects of another pop star’s recent ordeal.

Taylor Swift was filmed shouting at security at one of the Philadelphia concerts earlier this month.

In video from the show, the singer yelled at the guard to stop touching a fan between the lyrics to her song “Bad Blood.”

Afterwards, people online praised Swift for watching out for her fans.

  • Justin Bieber ‘supports’ wife Hailey Bieber over the idea of not having kids amid online hate; Deets inside

Justin Bieber ‘supports’ wife Hailey Bieber over the idea of not having kids amid online hate; Deets inside

    [ad_1]

Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber, who are always the talk of the town, feel always incomplete, if there is no mention of Selena Gomez. As there were rumors about the couple celebrating their time in the Bahamas because Hailey might be pregnant, the bubble soon burst after the latest interview, which took place. The star wife also spoke about family planning and the online backlash she has received.

Here is what Hailey Bieber spoke about in her interview:

Hailey Bieber expressed her worry about not having a kid anytime soon due to what people say about her, Justin Bieber, and ongoing online disputes. According to a source, Justin supports his beloved wife in this matter.

The pair has endured a lot in recent months as a result of their online dispute over Selena Gomez.

Justin Bieber’s support for Hailey for not having kids so soon

According to a source at US Weekly Magazine, Justin Bieber is completely behind Hailey Bieber. “Justin supports Hailey and couldn’t be more proud of her after she spoke out about the reasons she wants to wait before having children,” he insider said. The source added, “They’ve spoken about it a lot, but she’s gone through a lot this year, and he wouldn’t want to rush her into something she doesn’t feel completely comfortable moving forward with.”

The insider continued, “He knows they’ll have kids when the time is right.” The insider stated, “but it’s a huge decision and something they both need to be on the same page about. Justin will wait for Hailey as long as she needs.”

Hailey Bieber’s take on the issue

For the unversed, previously, Hailey expressed how she is concerned about the future. Hailey Bieber told The Sunday Times that she is concerned about the future, what their children will face, and how she and Justin Bieber will address those who make inappropriate comments about children. She said, “I literally cry about this all the time!” Hailey added, “I desperately want children, yet I’m afraid. People saying things about my husband or my friends is enough. I can’t imagine having to confront adults who say hurtful things about children.”

How Justin’s past has inflated Hailey’s marriage

Justin and Hailey have been married since 2018, and he previously had a romance with Selena. The fans affectionately referred to them as Jelena, and the majority of them are still not over them; while they have moved on, their fandom has not. Hailey frequently receives a lot of hate from Selena’s followers, and this time it became so bad that Gomez had to step in and tell her supporters to stop.

  • Insight On Being An It Girl

Insight On Being An It Girl

    [ad_1]

I grew up watching print magazines slowly turn into forgettable social media reels and semi-viral online articles. But their core content hasn’t changed: follow the It Girl, become the It Girl. The It Girl changes with the season, but during her time in the sun, she dictates trends and demands respect wherever she goes.

When I was younger, the It Girls were the Disney Channel stars I saw on my screen. I picked up every issue of
Tiger Beat and J-14 magazine to read about what Zendaya was wearing and to see which shade of lipgloss Selena Gomez was using (some things don’t change). The articles were all the same, but you’d never get tired of hearing young Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Raven Symone, and more giving dating advice to their adolescent, adoring fans.

Then, middle school hit and it was Taylor Swift time (again, some things don’t change). As I sit and write this, Taylor most definitely is still the hottest topic…but mix in supermodels and actresses like Bella and Gigi Hadid, the Kardashians, Sydney Sweeney, Sofia Richie, and, of course, Hailey Bieber.

    @babybella777 3/18
♬ thinkin bout you – renny

    When I was reading
The Cut’s It Girl issue this year, I realized they were right…everyone kind of is an It Girl these days. It Girls are being cycled faster than some trends, because there is room for more than one It Girl in this huge world.

What Does It Take To Be An It Girl?

    I have a simple answer:
a social media account and an air of confidence. Everyone is an It Girl in my eyes if they are living their best lives and doing it with confidence. If you want to chase after the influencer lifestyle and post TikToks all day, you’re an It Girl. If you want to post to your five friends on your private Snapchat story, you’re an It Girl.

The It Girl lifestyle is a state of mind, there isn’t one sort of “look” they go for. As long as she is confident, and supports other women, she’s an It Girl. Because who can tell you otherwise if you’re playing the part?

They’re famous just because they are who they are – they just have what It takes. The original It Girl idea came from New York City, notoriously breeding party-going, young, effervescent women who were famous for being themselves and nothing less. But the concept of the It Girl has evolved into something a bit more.

It’s become a state of mind that women have developed…not to mention It Girl’s sister, Hot Girl. It Girl makeup trends populate on TikTok, you can see aesthetic Hot Girl lifestyle videos galore. Everyone wants to be That Girl…but who is That Girl?

For me, the idea of an It Girl shouldn’t be to be the most liked person on this planet or to make as much money as possible…but to live a life that makes you happiest. It’s about wearing the clothes you want and doing your makeup how it feels best for
    you.

Sure Alix Earle can influence you to buy any product, but what made her an It Girl was her honesty with her audience. Anyone can be considered beautiful, but if you’re not living life with good intentions then others can sniff that out.

So yes, the It Girl can have the ten-step skincare routine and always look put together…but she can also go out all weekend and spend Sundays curled up on her couch mourning her bank account. She can buy the expensive bag and regret it tomorrow.

Her secret? You can never tell what the It Girl is going to do next. She’s elusive, a bit unattainable, and yet she has to seem normal enough to be relatable.
You can go anywhere in the world and find an It Girl.

With social media, there’s always an It Girl somewhere. Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae were the dominating It Girls of TikTok until the app cycled in more and more It Girls. Today, it’s Sofia Richie and her Old Money chic. Tomorrow, who knows?

The other day, a friend of mine asked who the It Girl was. Right now, for many, it’s actresses like Jenna Ortega and Madelyn Cline. For others, it’s TikTokers like Monet McMichael and Alix Earle.
Truly, the It Girl depends on who you ask.

So, yes, it may be an overrated concept in theory…but it’s been developed into a mindset for many girls to instill confidence within themselves. Nothing wrong with striving for the It Girl lifestyle.

Did Justin Bieber contact ex Selena Gomez begging her to help wife Hailey Bieber? Inside reveals

    [ad_1]

Popular singer Justin Bieber is a complete family man and he has proved it time and again. Currently, the singer is making headlines after he said that he hates to see her wife Hailey Bieber in pain. Recently, the latter revealed that she has been dealing with mental health issues. Reportedly, the Love Yourself singer contacted his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez begging her to help his wife after her fans trolled her for shading the singer. For the unversed, Justin was terrified that he will lose his fandom after Hailey and Kylie Jenner’s video went viral where fans speculated that it was pointed towards the Back To You singer.

Justin Bieber begs Selena Gomez to help Hailey Bieber

An insider has revealed that Selena Gomez has only helped Hailey because of her ex-beau Justin as she has no love for the model but still cares about the singer whom she dated for a decade. “Selena has no love for Hailey, but she still cares about Justin — who privately begged her to get folks to believe they’ve all made peace. It’s not only for Hailey’s sake but for him!”, an insider told Radar Online. “Justin is concerned he and Hailey have become the most unpopular couple in Hollywood and is terrified that when and if he is able to come back, his fans won’t be there anymore,” the source further added.

When Selena Gomez took stand for Hailey Bieber

After Selena fans started attacking Hailey, the former asked her fans to stop doing that. On the story, the Disney alum wrote, “Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity. This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.” Following this, Hailey publically thanked her and wrote “I want to thank Selena for speaking out, as her and I have been discussing the last few weeks how to move past this ongoing narrative between her and I. The last few weeks have been very hard for everyone involved and millions of people are seeing so much hate around this, which is extremely harmful.”

Hailey Bieber reveals having ‘saddest, hardest moment’ of adult life, requests people to ‘be there’ for others

    [ad_1]

Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez’s plight has been this year’s top chartered headline. It all started with a simple video call by Kylie Jenner, posting a screenshot of their call on Instagram, and spreading like wildfire with just one laminated eyebrows post.

Which later slowly went on to corner Hailey Bieber to such an extent that even rumors started to make rounds about Justin Bieber having sided with Selena’s team as he followed her on Twitter. These series of events divided the audience between Selena and Hailey, where the strength of Gomez’s supporters tarnished Hailey to such an extent that she even started receiving death threats.

Hence it goes without saying that since the beginning of 2023, Hailey Bieber has experienced “some of the saddest, hardest moments” of her adult life, according to the supermodel as she quotes.

Hailey Bieber crafts a heartfelt note about her 2023 journey:

    Hailey Bieber Instagram Story

Mrs. Bieber said that life hasn’t been easy lately in an Instagram Story on Wednesday, appearing to make a subtle allusion to her recently reported dispute with Selena Gomez.

The 26-year-old wife of singer Justin Bieber stated, “I prefer to make jokes about how I feel because sometimes it’s easier than admitting I’m having a hard time.”

Following her alleged argument with Selena Gomez, who has come forward to support the influencer, Hailey claimed that she has been left feeling “fragile” emotionally.

But since 2023 began, she said, “I’ve experienced some of the saddest, hardest moments I’ve ever experienced in my adult life, and my mind and emotions have been, to put it mildly, fragile.”

In February, when Hailey shared a since-deleted TikTok video that appeared to be body shaming Gomez, fans started to speculate that their long-running dispute had flared up again.

A few weeks later, many believed Hailey and her friend Kylie Jenner were making fun of Selena Gomez’s eyebrows on Instagram, but both ladies denied the claims.

Hailey added in her tweet on Wednesday night, “And I know so many other people feel the same way I do, so just know you’re not alone.”

Having stated that, let’s continue to support one another. Let’s support our friends, family, loved ones, and even strangers.

“Let’s just be there for each other. Even when it’s difficult, let’s continue to be there for each other. Together, we’re better, she continued.

Hailey Bieber reached out to Selena Gomez for help during their internet feud.

Hailey made a request to Gomez to ask her 403 million Instagram followers to stop sending her death threats last month.

This was later appreciated by her when Selena Gomez stood for her amid increasing tensions between their fan bases, where the Calm Down singer requested everyone to be kind and not cross the line.

Why is there a string of disputes between Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez?

When Hailey got engaged to Justin Bieber, Gomez’s ex of eight years, just a few months after their final breakup in 2018, there were initial rumors of animosity between the two.

Since then, it appears that the two have put their differences aside and are now Instagram followers.

Only Murders in the Building: THESE characters bid adieu to season 3

    [ad_1]

Summer heat waves will stir a wave of laughter as season 3 of the most-awaited series ‘Only Murders in the Building’ will grace their presence with its all-new third installment. As the hype of season 3 has been taking over the audience, they just can’t stop wondering what new drama-filled season 3 has in store for the viewers.

With its new season, there is also addition and subtraction of old details.

Only Murder in the Buildings, which will return this summer, won’t have two of the performers who helped the ensemble cast and season become a successful unit in its first two seasons.

For the forthcoming third season of the series, which is adding a few major names to the ensemble in place of stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. Out of which actors Amy Ryan, who played Jan, and Nathan Lane, as Teddy Dimas, won’t be marking their comebacks for season 3.

Here is why they won’t be marking their attendance for season 3.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, when asked about their plans for the future season, Lane and Ryan gave fans an update.

“Only Meryl in the Building,” Lane remarked. “Well, I’m not, no. No. I haven’t been able to participate since I’ve been working on a play, but I assume my character is currently behind bars. Perhaps in a later season?”

The pair said that in order to get revenge on the other characters in the series, their characters should band together. Additionally, they implied that Meryl Streep, who will join the cast for Season 3, would work with them in Season 4 as part of an intricate plan. Which gives a hint that they will be back in action from season 4.

Who is the newest addition to the cast of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ for its upcoming installment?

“Only Murders in the Building” is presently filming its third season, and Gomez, Martin, and Short are all making their comebacks.

Along with newcomers Jesse Williams and Paul Rudd, three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep will also make an impactful appearance in the series.

An overview of what Season 3 of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ will contain

In the season finale of the previous season, Paul Rudd played Ben Glenroy, a prominent actor who unexpectedly passed away on stage after a fight with Oliver Putnam, played by Stephen Short. Now that Glenroy is the target of everyone’s suspicion, Season 3 should pick up in the wake of this tragic passing. Rudd’s character will undoubtedly be “a clear source of many upcoming questions and, as always with our show, many twists yet to come,” as co-creator John Hoffman previously hinted.

So, we’ll have to keep an eye on how this mystery develops. Streep’s part was recently hinted at in a teaser, and her inclusion to the series, along with that of the aforementioned Rudd, has given it an extra dose of star power.

  • SZA’s “Kill Bill” Remix With Doja Cat Opts to Further Elaborate on (Literally) Attacking “The Other Woman”

SZA’s “Kill Bill” Remix With Doja Cat Opts to Further Elaborate on (Literally) Attacking “The Other Woman”

    [ad_1]

In these la-di-da times, it’s increasingly less “kosher” to “come for” “the other woman” in a cheating scenario. Or a scenario in which one is left for another woman before the infidelity occurs (as if). But Doja Cat seems determined to remind women, including SZA, that it takes two to tango, and, regardless of feminism (“or whatever”), the puta involved can very much be held accountable…in addition to being a source of piled-on contempt. While this mode of behavior has been out of fashion for a while as a result of something like “obligatory female solidarity” (i.e., “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women”), Doja Cat bringing it back may very well be a sign of society’s overall regressive attitude toward women at this moment in history. At the same time, who amongst “the women” hasn’t fallen prey to the incensed flames of jealousy that burn eternal whenever thinking of “that bitch” who took “their” man? As though anyone can truly be owned like so much property. But that’s a story (/anti-capitalist rant) for another assessment.

The latest example of such a case of “the catfight” making a comeback was the flare-up between Hailey “Bieber” (but really Baldwin) and Selena Gomez. One that was initiated by Kylie Jenner and Bieber as a result of the former posting a screenshot of her and Bieber’s eyebrows from a FaceTime call three hours after Gomez announced to TikTok that she felt her own eyebrows looked too laminated. In terms of “gauntlets thrown,” it’s utterly innocuous, and also passive-aggressive child’s play compared to the shit that Joan and Bette used to get into. But such is the way of our repressed present, where feigning politeness is firmly billed under the category and as an offshoot of wokeness. But it is not woke at all anymore to exhibit hostile behavior toward “the little bitch” whose pussy redirected your man’s attention away from you. Except in the instance of “Kill Bill,” during which SZA casually mentions by the end, “I just killed my ex/Not the best idea/Killed his girlfriend next, how’d I get here?”

Doja Cat, re-teaming with SZA after 2021’s runaway hit, “Kiss Me More,” chooses to elaborate in more detail on the murder of that new girlfriend via the remix. Which explores the idea of killing said woman in front of her ex for optimal sadism cachet (even though Doja claims it was unintentional to do it in such a manner). Markedly different from the start for wielding Doja Cat’s new verses instead of doling them out in the middle, as is usually the norm for remixes, what truly sets the song apart is Doja’s chipper rehashing of how she ended up killing her ex’s new girl prior to the ex himself. Told over the course of about fifty-five seconds before SZA enters the song to sing her usual chorus, Doja begins, “I know it’s not a really good occasion to be bargin’ in/I couldn’t help but watch you kiss her by the kitchen sink/I swung the door farther open, tippy-toed farther in…” From there, things escalate rather quickly as, per Doja, the other woman turns out to be an uppity bitch about the whole thing, instantly freaking out instead of trying to talk to Doja rationally. And, evidently, the ex stepped out of the room for a moment to add to the other woman’s fear quotient. So it is that Doja continues to describe, “She saw me standin’ by the TV and she wouldn’t stop screamin’/So I tried to be discreet and told her, ‘Calm your tits.’”

Of course, that’s the last thing the emotionally dainty other woman feels like doing, with Doja elaborating, “She grabbed the kitchen knife so I pulled out the blick/Ain’t got it all the time, so thank god I did for this/‘Cause she was seein’ red, and all I saw was you/It happened in a flash when she charged at me/Y’all crisscrossed, saw her fall to the floor/Then you paused there in horror/But that shot wasn’t for her (was it?).” That parenthetical “was it?” arrives as SZA starts to sing, “I might…” This “subtle” question serving to intimate that yes, maybe all along, the shot was as much meant for the new bia as it was her ex. Because, in her mind, it is this other woman who drove the wedge between them. She’s the one who is really keeping them apart. After all, by naively believing this, a girl like Doja or SZA can go on insisting that there’s still hope for her and her ex to be together again.

By blame-shifting most of the responsibility onto the other woman, the Doja or SZA of the equation can therefore conserve some semblance of their “loving feeling” for the philandering cad in question. Even if those feelings of murderous rage tend to linger when an “armistice” is reached after he “acts up” (a.k.a. egregiously betrays her). And yes, we all know Beyoncé still has them despite “forgiving” Jay-Z. Unfortunately for her freedom of expression, such a “beacon of feminism” can’t take it out too overtly on “the other woman,” save for thinly-veiled digs like, “He better call Becky with the good hair.”

Even when fellow “feminist light” Taylor Swift was ultimately denigrating the other woman in 2008’s “You Belong With Me,” it was cloaked behind self-deprecation—talking shit about herself by seeing an apparent lack in what she had (physically) compared to the other girl. Hence, lyrics like, “She wears high heels I wear sneakers/She’s cheer captain, and I’m on the bleachers.” So it was that Taylor played up the vacuous mean girl trope (*cough cough* Hailey Bieber) for her own benefit as well, but through an obfuscated lens.

On “Kill Bill,” both the original and remix editions, SZA and Doja Cat refuse to play that game. Openly maligning the other woman and unleashing a torrent of rage upon her (“casually delivered” though it may be). Some might call that regressive, while others might be relieved that the floodgate has been reopened to hate on the proverbial other woman. Even if both Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber were too chicken shit to fully capitalize on that “sanction” when the opportunity presented itself.

Not Commenting on People’s Bodies Would Eradicate Way Too Many Industries: Why the Ariana Grande Body Shaming Speech Is Ultimately Hollow

    [ad_1]

To exist is, unfortunately, to be perceived. And, in this world, there’s no shortage of people who would like to comment on their perception of you. Being a celebrity takes that phenomenon to an nth degree that no civilian can likely imagine. However, it is (and long has been) considered part and parcel of “the fame game.” For if a person wants to be in the public eye for the sake of disseminating whatever their talent is to the masses, the inevitable fallout is the curse of public opinion. Not everyone is going to “love” you or automatically embrace everything about you, least of all when it comes to appearance.

Lately, the frequent criticism of fans themselves is that they are not “real” fans if they deign to condemn anything about their so-called god. That’s where the modern fandom-fame dynamic has gone terribly askew. For the die-hard fans (of a Swarm variety) are of the belief that no “ill word” should ever be spoken of the “deity” they worship. This extends to fault-finding of any kind—read: straightforward perceptions of the body. Remarking on if a celebrity has lost or gained weight is at the top of the list (as Britney once put it, “I’m Mrs. She’s Too Big Now She’s Too Thin”). This includes Grande’s increasingly “heroin chic” look. And yes, she was already objectively thin to begin with. Such “objectivity,” however, is something that Grande wants people to feel “less comfortable” commenting on, even if it’s coming from a “well-intentioned” place. Which it was, as what prompted Grande to release a video chastising this form of body shaming in the first place was the barrage of comments that came in the wake of her cameo at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, where she and Cynthia Erivo went to see their fellow Wicked co-star, Jeff Goldblum (who will be, of all things, the Wizard of Oz), play the piano. Alas, all eyes were focused on her ever-diminishing body shape rather than the music.

A similar incident occurred in May of 2005, when Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan (then in greater cahoots perhaps because of a shared mutual contempt for Paris Hilton) were photographed looking utterly anorexic as they swam in their floor-length dresses with arms that mirrored those of a starving African child. Cue the onslaught of tabloid headlines. While Richie would later state that her weight loss was a result of stress and anxiety rather than any eating disorder, she still admitted of her 00s self, “I see a girl that is obviously going through something and is much too skinny [and probably on drugs, went the unspoken conclusion].” Lohan, in turn, copped to battling with bulimia (and drug addiction) around this time. Both women had no issue in discussing their bodies or addressing people’s continued concerns about the message their shared (lack of) figure was sending. At the height of tabloid “culture,” maybe it was too “normalized” to be okay with dissecting headlines that dissected one’s body. But, at the same time, Lohan and Richie were in on the joke. And relished the then-revered “skinny bitch” physique. So much so that Lohan even wore a shirt that said “Skinny Bitch” and Richie threw a Memorial Day barbeque that barred guests over a hundred pounds (“There will be a scale at the front door. No girls over 100 pounds allowed in. Start starving yourself now”). Such acts would invoke immediate cancellation in the present, to be sure.

Left: Lohan lapping up her skinny bitch era before it really happened on the right, with Nicole Richie

Perhaps because Grande is, in her own way, an honorary member of Gen Z (as a result of her vocal advocacy for mental health), she’s drunk from that Kool-Aid for too long to remember what she truly is: a millennial. Of the Lohan and Richie generation, even if slightly younger than they are. This forming the weird chasm to become part of a microgeneration (something that never needed to exist before everything and “trend” started to accelerate at such a rapid speed due to waning attention spans spurred by the internet). And Lohan and Richie know better than anyone that trying to steer the public away from their opinions is fruitless. If anything, it makes them cling to those “freedom of speech” rights all the more.

But what’s most glaring about Grande’s “earnest plea” is that she’s trying to tell a society that traffics in the financial profits of various forms of body shaming (including, at the top of the list, beauty products) that they should no longer be so critical. The thought of such an amendment to human (nay, consumer) behavior actually occurring is not only absurd, but entirely far-fetched. Especially within the celebrity-industrial complex that Grande operates within. Not to mention Selena Gomez, another recent victim of the body shaming discourse that led to her own clapback at “fans” (again, as they’re so derisively put in quotation marks when they speak ill of their god) the same way Grande did on TikTok Live. Establishing the blueprint for Grande, Gomez declared, “I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what [you’re] going through, [when] nobody knows the real story… you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful.” Grande echoed the same sentiments with, “You never know what someone is going through. So even if you are coming from a loving place and a caring place, that person is probably working on it. Or has a support system that they are working on it with and…you never know. So be gentle with each other.” She added, “I just wanted to extend some love your way and tell you that you’re beautiful no matter what phase you’re in…no matter what you’re going through, no matter what weight…no matter how you like to do your makeup these days, no matter what cosmetic procedures you’ve had or not…I just think you’re beautiful.” Of course, that’s easy to say when you can’t actually see who you’re talking to.

As for the specific mention of makeup, it bears noting that both Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez make a large chunk of their profits off that industry via their R.E.M. and Rare Beauty lines, respectively. Whatever the makeup is being marketed as (“inclusive,” “natural,” etc.), it’s still ultimately designed to be used as a tool to mask one’s “authentic” self. For if that’s truly what we all wanted to be, makeup wouldn’t be a billion-dollar industry. Or plastic surgery. Or fashion, for that matter. And, speaking of, Grande is “the face” of one of the most elitist names in haute couture, Givenchy. Also a brand that has long worshipped at the altar of Audrey Hepburn-level thinness (spoiler alert: Hepburn got that thin by being malnourished as a child during World War II). Indeed, Grande is meant to be some sort of “2.0” version of Hepburn’s waif-based poise and elegance. But no, she insists, we should not comment on bodies—even as she proceeds to make much of her bag on the discourse that surrounds them. This, too, cuts straight to the issue that no one’s addressing (least of all a celebrity): capitalism.

The only reason to comment on bodies and create a “narrative” centered on what’s “hot” and “not” in that “realm” (e.g., Kim Kardashian’s physique usurping the rail-thin one of Paris Hilton’s after the 00s) is because it’s profitable to multiple industries. And it’s not just limited to beauty and fashion. It creates a ripple effect in every facet of purchasable existence—from foods consumed to exercise habits that can be paid for. And it’s something every celebrity benefits from financially. Even the much-exalted Lizzo, who has also entered the chat again as a result of Grande’s video, with people bringing up her own anti-body shaming tirade from January of this year in which she announces, “The discourse around bodies is officially tired.” “Tired” or not, it’s still a source of major income to many involved in the fame racket. And even selling “body positivity” is a part of that. The weaponization of language (such as censoring people from stating the obvious in a way that makes them feel fearful to speak at all), of course, is one of the first steps in fully activating 1984. Yet our society is bifurcating into a separate territory from that Orwellian nightmare as well, one in which the jettisoning of the body seems to be related to the increasing reliance on “uploading consciousness” (as Grimes said, “Come on you’re not even alive/If you’re not backed up on a drive”).

In a Nightline special addressing Gomez’s defense of her body, an archival clip of Lizzo being interviewed was included as she said, “We as a society have normalized cruelty to a point where we have internalized cruelty.” Again, does everyone need to be hit over the head with the obvious reason why? C-A-P-I-T-A-L-I-S-M. Apparent cuntiness sells. In tabloid-oriented form as much as fashion and makeup form.

Despite this, an ABC news contributor who appeared on the special, Kelley L. Carter, concluded, “I don’t think people want perfection out of celebrities anymore. I think they want celebrities that they can see themselves in.” Or at least, “the raw material” of themselves. For “fame as a profession” (a.k.a. going viral) has never been more lusted after than it is in the present climate. And if people—“real,” “average-looking” people—can see themselves in a celebrity, then yeah, that’s still a goldmine for the capitalist cause. Which has thrived on body shaming for centuries (see: the below ad as one of countless examples).

Selling shit by shaming people is an American tradition that won’t be quelled with any hypocritical celebrity pep talks

All of this talk about “not commenting on celebrity appearance” also plays into the idea that it isn’t safe to say anything anymore, and certainly not to call a spade a spade (i.e., a fat person fat or a thin person thin). At least, in U.S. culture. But imagine telling a culture as hyper-critical and in-your-face as the Italians to keep their comments to themselves. To that end, it was Stefano Gabbana who outright called Gomez “brutta” in 2018. This leading to another conversation about why he should be lambasted for expressing an opinion since, as it is said (often falsely when it comes to selling fashion through models), “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Whatever “effect” Grande’s video might have inflicted for a brief twenty-four-hour period in the news cycle, it’s not likely to shift the bottom line: if celebrities truly want to stop the “body shaming” they’re faced with, then the only thing to do is 1) use their fortune to go back in time and not become famous or 2) retreat into the “wilderness” like J. D. Salinger. Or better yet, renounce capitalism to be a truly commendable role model. As both Grande and Gomez have been branded for their stance against shaming…never acknowledging that all shame stems from our collective commitment to prostitution.
