    Change Your Gender, (Maybe) Change Your Life: Emilia Pérez

    If some story aspects of Emilia Pérez seem familiar, it’s because writer-director Jacques Audiard was inspired by a particular chapter in Boris Razon’s 2018 novel, Écoute. But if some of the visual aspects seem familiar, it’s no doubt because viewers recognize the style as inherently “Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet.” Right down to the movie poster with its neon heart framing two guns with crosses on the grips. Indeed, Luhrmann’s seminal 1996 movie (almost as seminal as the William Shakespeare play itself) has appeared to have a noticeable influence on pop culture lately, if one is to go by the aesthetic of Emilia Pérez and the recently cancelled Netflix series, Kaos. The latter even goes so far as to use the same storytelling “shtick” by updating something “ancient” to fit into a modern (therefore, more resonant) context. With plenty of cheeky attitude.

    Emilia Pérez marks Audiard’s twenty-fifth film as a screenwriter and his eleventh film as writer-director (a dual role he started to take on in 1994 with See How They Fall). And it’s clear that he’s never been more confident and secure in his abilities—not just because this is the first time he’s written a script without a co-writer credited, but because he took a chance on experimenting with the musical genre (which, as audiences saw this year, didn’t work out so well for a movie like Joker: Folie à Deux). Or, more precisely, an opera libretto. And yet, perhaps because of some of the more “absurd” elements of the story, a musical is the best way to diffuse the audience’s potential incredulity. Within the genre of a musical, anything goes—because everything feels inherently more fantastical within this type of world.

    Cue Zoe Saldaña as Rita Mora Castro, an overlooked yet indispensable lawyer who defends the guilty-as-sin dregs of society with grudging skill, singing a song like “La Vaginoplastia.” A little ditty about all the different parts and procedures that go into switching genders. She engages in this back and forth with doctors in milieus that include Bangkok and Tel Aviv (this movie being made before choosing to get gender transformation surgery was an undeniable political affront). All on behalf of Juan “Manitas” Del Monte (Karla Sofía Gascón), the jefe of a Mexican drug cartel who briefly has her kidnapped to tell her that he can no longer live this life. Not because he’s trying to avoid arrest or even because he has some sort of moral compunction about the things he’s done, but because he needs to exist in the body he was always meant to. To live his life, as it is said, “authentically.” And obviously, he’s got the money required to make that change, forking a good chunk of it over to Rita to be his go-between as she eventually settles on the Israeli surgeon, Dr. Wasserman (Mark Ivanir), to realize Manitas’ dream. The catch? She must deal with his “highly emotional” (always a euphemism for “woman”) wife, Jessi Del Monte (Selena Gomez, sporting a terrible Spanish accent that’s slightly less noticeable when she’s singing).

    It’s all part of the lead-up toward faking Manitas’ death so that Emilia Pérez can emerge. This is the identity that Manitas has been waiting to step into for years, having already started the process of taking hormones long ago. He is thus ready to “kill” Manitas, and Rita is the key to unlocking his previously unfulfilled wish—even though he knows that, in exchange, he must give up his family. Not just his wife, but their two children. The latter relinquishment being the most painful aspect of all. And yet, Manitas maintains, not as painful as continuing to exist as a man. Let alone such a brutal, often cruel one. It is in this sense that Emilia Pérez proffers the black-and-white notion that to become a woman is to stamp out the ruthlessness inherent in being a man. Not a radical idea, but likely one that still causes offense amongst both genders. Not to mention certain critics of the film—case in point, the Little White Lies assessment: “Any time Emilia ‘reverts’ to her ‘old ways,’ Gascon lowers her vocal register as if to equate masculinity with evil and femininity with good.” Well, if the vocal register fits…

    Not to say, of course, that women can’t be just as malicious and terrible (in their own unique ways) as men. But the likelihood is, let’s say, much slimmer. And so, after Manitas becomes Emilia, there is a certain veracity to the mantra “change your gender, change your life.” And maybe even your entire personality. For, all of the sudden, Emilia becomes a beneficent philanthropist/activist. A person committed to helping undo some of the harm she caused while acting as the leader of a violent cartel by tirelessly working to find the location of missing persons (usually just their bodies) kidnapped by the cartels. This is where yet another “leading woman” enters frame: Epifanía (Adriana Paz). And yes, her name is a bit on the nose, with Emilia seeming to have the “epiphany” that she’s fallen in love for the first time as her authentic self. The same seems to go for Epifanía. And so, it can be said that Emilia’s bodily transition has had a ripple effect/significant impact on the more metaphorical/emotional transitions of the three primary women in her life.

    By this point in the movie (when Epifanía enters the mix), it’s also abundantly clear that Audiard has taken more than a dash of inspo out of the Pedro Almodóvar playbook (for example, The Skin I Live In) via-à-vis convoluted melodrama. But Almodóvar’s more personal connection to the queer and transgender community is what Audiard lacks in terms of carrying off the “authenticity” that he wants to…or rather, that certain viewers want him to. But that doesn’t negate the emotional response that Emilia Pérez can evoke. As it did for Madonna (who has worked with the movie’s choreographer, Damien Jalet, on her own projects, including select songs from The Celebration Tour). Indeed, her reaction left such a mark on Gascón that she told The Guardian, “Madonna was crying so much after the screening in New York. She told me: ‘You’re amazing!’ She was crying and crying. I said: ‘Madonna, please. It’s only a film. Be happy!’” The same thing one of the actors in Romeo + Juliet might have said to an audience member who reacted particularly viscerally to the well-known ending of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

    And, like Romeo + Juliet, Emilia Pérez isn’t exactly being praised by everyone (side note: who could forget The New York Times’ shade-drenched review title of R + J that read, “Soft! What Light? It’s Flash, Romeo” or Roger Ebert giving it one of his worst reviews of a movie ever). Least of all the trans community. In fact, despite Gascón being transgender, not everyone sees the movie as a positive representation. Just another cartoonish one that wields tired tropes. A PinkNews review summed up the movie as “having no nuance when it comes to trans identity.” But maybe it does show some nuance in terms of how, no matter what gender you are, it’s still possible to be neither wholly “good” or “bad,” but filled with numerous contradictions as varied as life itself. As Gascón put it, “You can be LGBTQ+. You can be a man, a woman, an astronaut, an electrician. But if you are stupid, you are stupid.”

    And those that want to ignore the many layers of Emilia Pérez based on criticisms rooted in literalness, not understanding/appreciating the nature of opera and musical theatricality or simply insisting that the transgender element is “offensive” (though surely not more offensive than Gomez and her “Spanish”) are missing the film’s brilliance. Not least of which is the undercutting theme of how living in a patriarchal society begets violence among all genders, all colors.

    Gascón distilled it down to this: “There has always been an explicit violence toward others in parts of male heterosexuality, and that has also been taken up by a part of women’s feminism to crush a certain section of the population.” Whether that crushing will be allowed to further thrive in the aftermath of the U.S. election in November remains to be seen. But one certainty is this: changing gender is not necessarily the key to changing one’s mentality. That would take decades of deprogramming for many people. Especially women who have been conditioned to be misogynists themselves.

    WASHINGTON (AP) — Former first lady Michelle Obama will headline a rally in Atlanta a week before the Nov. 5 election alongside celebrities and civic leaders focusing on engaging younger and first-time voters, as well as voters of color.

    The Oct. 29 event will be hosted by When We All Vote, a nonpartisan civic engagement group that Obama founded in 2018 to “change the culture around voting” and reach out to people who are less likely to engage in politics and elections.

    The rally is likely to help the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, in a closely contested state. Obama is one of the party’s best-known figures and gave a speech boosting Harris’ candidacy at the national convention in August.

    It is unclear which celebrities will attend the rally but organizers noted that the group’s co-chairs include professional basketball players Stephen Curry and Chris Paul; musical artists Becky G, H.E.R., Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez and Janelle Monáe; beauty influencer Bretman Rock; and actors Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Kerry Washington.

    The group has hosted more than 500 “Party at the Polls” events across the country focused on increasing voter registration and turnout. The events have ranged from pop-up block parties in Las Vegas, Phoenix and Philadelphia to voter registration partnerships with professional sports leagues and music festivals over the past year.

    “The goal is to take the energy and momentum at the rally to the ballot box,” said Beth Lynk, executive director of When We All Vote. “We want to bring the culture, the energy and the momentum together in one big space.”

    Lynk said the group chose Atlanta because of the state’s diversity and the impact that only a handful of voters can make in Georgia. About one-third of Georgia’s electorate is Black alongside rapidly growing Asian American and Latino communities. When We All Vote is focused on engaging college students on campuses in the metropolitan Atlanta area, Lynk said.

    “Something that we have been hearing from young voters is that a lot of people don’t believe that their votes have power. But they do, plain and simple,” Lynk said. “We know that democracy has to work for all of us and that’s what we will be stressing at this rally.”

    The rally will take place just before early voting ends in Georgia on Nov. 1, less than a week before Election Day.

    Naturally, Imposter Syndrome Is Tackled Through the Lens of “Being A Screenwriter” in Only Murders in the Building’s “Adaptation” Episode

    When it comes to wanting to emulate a certain screenwriter, the biggest “douchebag cliché” veers toward Charlie Kaufman worship. In the screenwriting world, it almost amounts to the same thing as a literary writer worshipping David Foster Wallace—who, yes, is mentioned within the first two minutes of Only Murders in the Building’s fifth episode in season four, “Adaptation.” (Specifically, “I can quote David Foster Wallace AND Ace Ventura.” Which is not exactly something to be proud of.) Obviously named as such in honor of Kaufman’s grudging homage to the masochism of screenwriting in the 2002 film of the same name.

    To convey the masochism and imposter syndrome that’s particularly unique to screenwriting, Marshall P. Pope (Jin Ha) opens the episode with the age-old question, “What makes a writer a real writer?” For most, whether writers or not, the answer, tragically, remains: being paid for it. Because being paid for things is what’s supposed to make you feel like a “real person” in general. But that sensation magnifies tenfold when you’re a writer—and, unfortunately, just one of many in the competitive cesspool of overall mediocrity that often actually allows only the mediocre to rise to the top.

    After selling his script to Paramount (with producer Bev Melon [Molly Shannon] at the helm), Marshall fears that he might be just that sort of “success story” as he applies a fake mustache and beard in front of the mirror (an Antonioni poster looming in the background for added pretentious, pseudointellectual flair) to make himself appear more “writerly.” More “worldly,” as he calls it. And, as most people in New York will maintain, “It’s about convincing the world and, honestly, yourself that you have the goods.” The old “fake it till you make it” chestnut. A vexing platitude that was much easier to execute back during a time when absolutely every embarrassing and/or compromising detail about your past couldn’t be dredged up somewhere on the internet and used against/to discredit you.  

    Even so, Marshall tries his best to evoke the “Kaufman look” (a picture of Charlie tacked to the mirror, in what could be called Single Asian Male-style) in the hope that said screenwriter’s own “brilliance” might rub off on him. Because, as Marshall also adds, “The look only gets you so far.” Theoretically, you’re supposed to have some talent, too. But that theory seems quaint now, rooted in the days before the Kardashians landed onto the scene. Marshall then instructs, “It comes down to what’s on the page.” Alas, if that were truly the case, movies like Madame Web would never be made.

    While OMITB’s “Adaptation” never bothers with getting meta in quite the same intense, envelope-pushing way as Kaufman’s movie (though, on a related note, Meryl Streep was in Adaptation just as she’s in season four of OMITB), the episode’s own writers, Steve Martin, John Hoffman and J.J. Philbin, are sure to drive home the meta aspect that stems from Charles-Haden Savage (Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) being forced by the studio turning their podcast into a film (rather than the movie-within-a-movie genre, OMITB seeks to embody the less-trodden movie-within-a-TV-show genre) to be photographed with their so-called doppelgangers: the actors playing them. For Charles, it’s Eugene Levy; for Oliver, it’s Zach Galifianakis; for Mabel, it’s Eva Longoria (who tells Mabel she’s been “aged up” to make her relationship with two old men seem less creepy). This serves only as more creative fodder for Marshall as he delves into additional rewrites on the script after spending more time with the trio (thanks to being questioned by them as a suspect).

    As Mabel and Charles wrap up their questioning of their “suspect,” Mabel can’t resist the inclination to ask, “Is your beard…fake?” An embarrassed Marshall replies, “Oh god, is it that obvious? This is supposed to be costume-grade human hair.” When Mabel continues to probe about why he has it, Marshall admits, “I can’t really grow facial hair and… I wanted to sell myself as a ‘real writer.’ This is the look, right?” Charles and Mabel both regard him as though he’s the saddest creature in the world before Charles gently inquires, “How could a writer of your talent have imposter syndrome?” Mabel, however, can immediately relate to knowing what it’s like to be good at what your passion is, yet still not really believe in that talent even after being accepted by the Establishment. Indeed, for Mabel, Establishment acceptance seems to be another sign, to her, that she’s an imposter. Particularly after Bev laps up every half-cooked idea she offers as Bev’s next adaptation-from-a-podcast movie.

    As for Martin (even if playing Charles while saying it) asking the abovementioned question, he’s no doubt speaking from his own experience in the screenwriting field, a métier that makes most of its pursuers feel like a fraud. Especially if they’ve never even sold a script. That one-in-a-million chance befalling only so many aspirants—and it’s typically only the most annoying, least talented ones who are willing to openly say, “Yeah, I’m a screenwriter” despite having no evidence other than an ego and a spec script to back it up.

    But what this episode of OMITB aims to do (apart from introducing a pair of new lead suspects) is assure those billed as “amateur” artists that said word is not a bad thing. That, in fact, it proves one is doing it for the love of the art rather than the quest for commercial “glory.” Marshall initially serves as a representation of both sides of that coin, albeit one who only really wants “success” because he’s been conditioned his entire life, like everyone else, to believe that art has value solely if it’s being in some way corporately subsidized. Therefore, “sanctioned” by a “higher power.”

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — The 76th annual Emmy Awards were handed out Sunday at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

    “Shogun” set a single season record for most wins with 18. “Shogun” won best drama series, and Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won acting awards for their roles.

    “Hacks’’ won the award for best comedy series. ”Baby Reindeer” and “The Bear’’ won four awards apiece.

    Early winners included Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Jeremy Allen White and Liza Colón-Zayas, who won awards for their work in the comedy series “The Bear.”

    Stars presenting Emmys to their peers included: Billy Crystal, Viola Davis, Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Maya Rudolph and Martin Sheen.

    Several actors and shows, including Rudolph, won last week. Rudolph won her sixth Emmy Award at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys for her voice work on “Big Mouth.” Jamie Lee Curtis also picked up a supporting actress Emmy last weekend for her appearance on “The Bear.”

    If you’ve fully convinced yourself you’re losing it, let us reassure you that’s probably not the case. The reason why Selena’s Emmys dress looks so familiar, is because it is. Let’s be clear, she hasn’t worn this exact dress before. But, she has worn a dress like this one before. To be specific, the Valentino gown she wore to the 2023 Academy Museum Gala is shockingly similar.

    Unlike the Ralph Lauren gown, Selena’s Valentino gown featured silver roses at the neckline and matching black gloves. But all the details aside, they still look very alike. Not only are both of the gowns black with silver detailing and of a similar silhouette—they were both worn with silver earrings, rings, and bracelets. We’re trying not to compare them, but it’s pretty hard not to.

    On Sunday, for the first time since the Telluride Film Festival’s North American premiere of Jacques Audiard’s one-of-a-kind musical Emilia Pérez on Friday, the three principal stars of the top-tier Oscar contender — Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez — sat down for an extensive group interview about their lives, their careers and the film for which they and costar Adriana Paz were jointly awarded the Cannes Film Festival’s best actress prize in May.

    Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the ladies reflected on the special bond that they formed while co-creating Audiard’s film, which revolves around a frustrated lawyer and a cartel leader who recruits her to help carry out a covert operation without the cartel leader’s spouse finding out.

    They also discussed — candidly and, at times, emotionally — the different hurdles they each faced en route to Emilia Pérez; the most daunting aspects of playing their characters in the film; and the ways in which the project is already reshaping their careers, and has the potential to bring about even greater changes.

    The comments of Gascón, 52, Saldaña, 46, and Gomez, 32, can be read in the transcript below, which has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity, and reflects a translator’s rendition of Spanish-speaker Gascón’s words.

    I’ve observed many selfies, hugs and kisses between the three of you this weekend! Can you talk about the bond that you share? I imagine it formed during the making of the movie, and perhaps was rekindled at Cannes, but even three months after that, you seem to really enjoy being with each other.

    SELENA GOMEZ I’m so grateful to have women around me that lift me up in every way. And yes, I have a special connection with these women. I feel so grateful that I get to go on this journey with them. We’re also happy for each other and we cheer each other on, and I love that. That can be rare.

    ZOE SALDAÑA I think that the award that we all received in Cannes was only possible because of the collaboration and camaraderie that we had. Everybody had their own respective journeys, of course. But we were rooting for each other from the beginning, and that was palpable. And for that to be seen and recognized? It’s really nice.

    KARLA SOFÍA GASCÓN We are a nice family. I’m so happy to be associated with these amazing people and actresses. And we’ve gotten to see each other every five minutes here in Telluride, which is such an incredible place! We’re in the middle of these high mountains, with incredible greenery all around us, and cinemas full of people. I never suspected that I could find cinemas so crowded in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere at the far end of Colorado.

    I want to go back to the very beginning, if we can, and talk about how this film was pitched to each of you, because I think it’s — in the best way — complicated to explain it to someone even after seeing it…

    GASCÓN They did a lot of work to show us what we would need to do in the movie. They had already pre-recorded something that I would label a video novel — there was the music; there were the dialogues, acted out — and this gave us a deeper idea of what we needed to do.

    Zoe, I read something in which you said the film was originally intended to be more of an opera?

    SALDAÑA Well, first, just going back to what you said, “when they pitched you this movie” — we were pitched to Jacques. (Laughs.)

    GOMEZ Yeah, that’s true.

    SALDAÑA Jacques doesn’t pitch you anything. Jacques shares with you his excitement, and then, if he invites you along, you say “yes.” It was an opera, and they were all going to have their own journeys, but there was going to be an intertwining along the way. Once I heard the songs, as an American person, I was like, “Well, this sounds like a musical.” But once I read the script, I realized, “It’s an opera.” But it kept evolving — throughout the journey of us rehearsing with Jacques, then learning the choreography, recording our songs, shooting, and then going back to the studio, these songs kept evolving as our characters kept growing. And Jacques never allowed any of us — even himself — to get in the way of that. And that process was quite scary, because there was a lot of improvising.

    GOMEZ No, it’s very true.

    Selena, you’ve been acting for your whole life. Have you ever been a part of any other project that evolved in a way similar to this one?

    GOMEZ I had a similar feeling when I did [Harmony Korine’s 2012 film] Spring Breakers. What I mean by that is because of the way Harmony directs, I felt challenged as an actor. That’s when I realized I had the bug, and that I’d rather be a part of something in the smallest way with the greatest filmmakers and actors and wonderful people I could meet, than needing to be the center of attention.

    I heard somewhere that when Jacques approached you, it was because he had seen and liked you in Spring Breakers, but didn’t really know anything else about you. Is that right?

    GOMEZ That’s correct, yes.

    What did you make of that?

    GOMEZ I thought it was really refreshing, and it made me feel like I earned the part. Like Zoe said, it’s Jacques who picked us — we were the ones begging — so it was really exciting.

    Karla, in America people are just getting to know you, but you’ve been acting for a long time. Can you explain what was going on in your life and career at the time that this film first crossed your radar?

    GASCÓN I was doing what any actress does: I was doing the best I could every day — and my life was definitely much more tranquil than it is now! [laughs] I was working in Mexico. I had just finished shooting a Netflix series indeed called Rebelde. And I was able to go to the supermarket and do my own grocery shopping. Then this whole whirlwind started. It’s a dream. I don’t know if it’s going to turn into a nightmare …

    GOMEZ No!

    SALDAÑA No!

    GASCÓN Or stay a dream.

    Karla, Jacques has said that meeting you really made him reimagine the character that you ended up playing, and that speaking with you helped him to provide a more sensitive and accurate depiction of the trans experience…

    GASCÓN As an actress, I was given a character that is incredible, with such an arc — it’s something that any actor or actress would dream of coming across in their life, a kind of character that Marlon Brando or Meryl Streep or Al Pacino or Javier Bardem would play. I never thought that something like that would come into my life. The role was just too wonderful to be true. When I had my very first meeting with Jacques, for me, it was love at first sight — like when you meet the girl of your dreams, and you stare into her little eyes, and you think she’s perfect, that was exactly what happened between the two of us. And then when we started building the movie. Jacques is the kind of filmmaker that builds a movie little by little. He’s very open to changes. And when I came into the picture, and then Zoe and Selena, he composed the film around our strengths. He has this uncanny talent to identify people’s strengths and build on them, which draws the best out of his actors and actresses. So yes, the story changed when I came into the picture, but not so much because of me. All I did was do what I’ve done my entire life: the best I could.

    Zoe and Selena, I know that your family roots are in Spanish-speaking places. Selena, you’ve sung a bit in Spanish. But have either of you ever previously been asked to act in Spanish as much as in this film? And was it exciting or daunting or something?

    SALDAÑA No, but it was always a wish. It’s my native tongue. But the older I’ve gotten, I’ve found it’s like ballet — if you don’t use it, you lose it. So I jumped at the opportunity to be able to do this, and to combine all the mediums of art that I love, that I watch and that I live for. It was like God was listening. I never thought that something like this was going to ever come my way, so when it did I went all in.

    GOMEZ I was very terrified to meet Jacques. I probably rehearsed for three months, and I didn’t think I’d get this role because I’m not fluent. When I got on board, I started working with Jacques and, with the help of everyone else, started figuring out what my character could be that would best suit me. We found this really good middle-ground of me [her character] being younger [than her character’s husband, played by Gascón] and having family in America [hence her character’s tendency to speak English]. And that’s very true to me even now [during our interview, listening to Gascón speak Spanish] — I can understand some of it. I’m part of that generation, I guess, where Latinx [people living in America are] half in, half out. It’s something, like Zoe said, that you have to practice every day. But I do appreciate who I am and where I came from.

    I’d like to ask each of you about some of the other specific challenges that you faced. Karla, you play Emilia both before and after her transition. I wondered if that, for a trans actress, was daunting, painful, or just part of the job?

    GASCÓN For me, all of it was challenging. I had to give 300 percent of myself. It’s a movie in which I sing, and I’m not a singer. It’s a movie in which I dance, and I move like Robocop. I had to change my voice twice, because even in the Emilia register [as opposed to the Manitas register], she speaks with much higher-pitched tones than I do. So the movie was full of challenges for me — but that’s why one is an actress or an actor. You do it so that you’re able to insert yourself into other people’s lives; and then, thanks to them [those characters], and the help of others, you evolve. So that wasn’t something that gave me fear. Rather, it’s something that allowed me to sharpen my chops. And I put a lot of myself into my character, so what truly cost me is leaving the character. I was deeply immersed into the abyss that is Emilia Pérez. So the most challenging part for me was actually getting out of the character.

    A quick follow-up, Karla. Movies are rarely shot in sequence, but I can see that posing real issues for you and your performance. Were you having to go back and forth between the pre-transition and post-transition character, or were you able to shoot all of one part and then the other?

    GASCÓN We did try to shoot it as chronologically as possible, but as you know, when you’re shooting a movie, that’s impossible to do all the time. There were many times where we had to go back and forth, where I had to do the transition to Manitas and then go back to Emilia in the present, and then to Emilia in the past several times. But I found that to be a lot of fun. This is what makes me want to be an actress. When I would sit down in the make-up chair and see the prosthesis that they would put on me, I was so impressed. I would look at myself and say, “Wow, this is why I chose to do this job, to put myself into another person’s skin and to understand another person better.”

    Zoe, I know you have a background in dance, but even so, that big opening number, in which you also sing, must have been a big undertaking. And I read that you had very little rehearsal time?

    SALDAÑA There was rehearsal — not as extensive as we would want to have in order for us to be able to do this with our eyes closed — but that is what made way for just the nuances that would come up. Sometimes when you over-rehearse something, it just becomes stale. And even performances can become stale if you don’t rediscover them. So Jacques kept us on our feet, in that sense. But also, I think he knew that he wasn’t done writing the story. Sometimes he would just get up and leave, and you’re like, “Where’s he going?” Sometimes he would send you an email in the middle of the night, because he was up and something came to him. So he was constantly living with this story, and that inspired us all to live with our characters. And there were things that were coming up for me about Rita. I recognize her. So many women are like her — women that live around the abuse and misuse of power by men, that live as quiet warriors, that always have to get things done — and their life is more real in their imagination than it is in real life. Rita navigated this relationship with power. She was drawn to it, and yet she hated it, defending all these crooks around her. So this thing that she has with Emilia was: “What would happen if I get really close to a power that is so big and violent and can hurt me? What if it works? What if I pull it off? Can it free me?” It was always a question. Every day, things kept coming up. That’s what led me to sometimes go home and get in an Epsom salt bath and go, “I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing but I’m just going to do it. I’m just going to feel it. I’m not going to think about it. I’m just going to be moldable.” In the end it was like, “Don’t fucking think. Just feel.”

    Selena, I imagine that singing — which we get to hear you do in this film, most notably with “El Camino” — might have been a little less daunting of an assignment for you than for the others. So other than that, what, for you, was the most daunting thing that you had to figure out?

    GOMEZ I guess kind of all of it. I really did my best in my audition, and I hadn’t heard anything, so I really didn’t think that I would get it. When I did, I felt like I needed to let go of everything, so I stopped working on my music and anything else, and solely focused on this. And the music [that she performs] in this movie would make me feel better, because I am comfortable in that area, but it was still a little daunting to go into a space where I didn’t speak the same language as the director [French] and I wasn’t fluent Spanish. Every day I’d wake up and rehearse the lines over and over again. And I’d call, in the middle of the night, my Spanish teacher. That part was probably the most daunting, but it was also fun.

    Finally, let’s talk about what the response to the film has meant to each of you. There was the shared best actress prize in Cannes — only the fifth time that a Cannes jury has shared that prize between costars. There’s now the fall film festivals, where the film is continuing to build momentum. And there’s the whole awards season to come, which you guys and your film will clearly be a central part of. What do you make of it all?

    SALDAÑA I am happy that this industry that I’ve been a part of for almost 20 years is getting to see a very fundamental part of me that I felt I never got to showcase. I’m proud of my journey. I would never change it. Please understand, I like being in space! [A reference to her roles in the blockbuster Avatar, Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy film franchises.] But I love Jacques Audiard, and I love art. And getting the recognition? Just having people that I look up to be like, “Oh, hey! You?!” I spent so many years wanting it, and then I stopped wanting it. I thought it was never going to happen. So having someone like Jacques kind of go, “I see you”? It’s healing, because I’ve had to navigate this world and feel kind of, at times, invisible. There is a place that I’ve existed in, and I’ve been told by a lot of people in positions of power, “No, this is what you can do. This is all you can do.” And last summer I was like, “I hear you — but I’m going to do more.” For that to have been acknowledged? For us to have been acknowledged? I was watching it [the Cannes awards ceremony] live in Texas ’cause I was shooting. I was with my folks and my husband’s folks and my children and my sisters and my dog and my cat. And to see my sons crying because they called my name? [chokes up] I don’t know where this is going to lead, but it led here today, and I’m taking it day by day. I’m so grateful that this movie brought me back to ballet and brought me back to myself. And anything else? I’m here.

    Selena, you’ve been celebrated for your music and for your great TV program Only Murders in the Building. But to be celebrated for work in film, which I know you’ve been wanting to do more of, must be particularly meaningful to you.

    GOMEZ I hope that this is just the beginning. I really, really tried my hardest to throw myself into this. And I was so grateful [for the Cannes recognition] — Zoe was the first to call me to tell me and congratulate all of us for the award. And I remember thinking, “Oh, I think this is something special that we have here.” And we don’t take a second of it for granted.

    Karla, you were the spokesperson for the group at that awards ceremony. Any final thoughts?

    GASCÓN Well, I’ve been reflecting these last few days, what I’ve been thinking about is that beyond what can happen to myself or to my career as an actress, there’s so much more. I sort of feel that I’m the true embodiment of the Joker. If you think of the Joker character, he was a character who spent his whole life being mocked and being insulted and being the victim of violence — and then it ended up with him making a revolution. Well, I feel that way. I am somebody who has spent her whole life being insulted, being rejected and being a target of violence. And now, all of a sudden, I have this opportunity in my hands to be able to change things for the better, to change other people’s lives, as well.

    GOMEZ Amen.

    Well, thank you guys so much. I really appreciate it.

    SALDAÑA I’m going to go cry.

    For nearly 20 years, Zoe Saldaña has starred in some of the most financially successful films in history, including “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame.” You’d think an actress with such an impressive résumé would have scripts and prominent roles constantly coming her way. Yet, in Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” where Saldaña plays Rita Moro Castro, she sings and dances, and in one high-energy number, “El Mal,” she shows the ferocity that shows the depth of her talent. It was a moment that left me incredibly frustrated with Hollywood. Despite her box office success, Saldaña has rarely been allowed to showcase the full range of her abilities. Why are we only learning about this now?

    I expressed these sentiments to Telluride executive director Julie Huntsinger during an interview with Variety, and she confidently replied, “That all stops now.”

    The Latina star is likely to be at the forefront of the Oscar race, depending on where she ultimately decides to campaign as either lead or supporting actress. Saldaña’s performance in “Emilia” harks back to the moment we watched Catherine Zeta-Jones’s portrayal of Velma Kelly in “Chicago” (2002), which led to an Oscar win. There’s a sense that Saldaña could follow a similar path this awards season.

    But the compelling musical crime film isn’t just about Saldaña.

    Writer, director, and producer Audiard received the Silver Medallion Tribute at Telluride on Friday evening, launching Netflix’s quest to nab the auteur his long overdue Oscar nom. Sometimes described as the “French Martin Scorsese,” the 72-year-old has won the Palme d’Or twice but has never been nominated for an Academy Award. This year, that could also change, as Audiard may find himself in the running for best picture, director or screenplay. He would become the latest triple crown recipient which has netted wins for The Daniels (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and nominations for Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), who won two out of three.

    The ensemble cast includes Karla Sofía Gascón in the titular role, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. Along with Saldaña, the four shared the best actress prize at Cannes, making them strong contenders for Academy recognition.

    Gascón aims to make history as the first trans woman nominated for best actress. Her presence on the circuit will help propel her in the lead actress race, which is sure to be overflowing with well-known artists and former nominees and winners, including Saoirse Ronan, who will also be honored at Telluride for her performance in “The Outrun.”

    Gomez’s arrival in Telluride on Thursday didn’t go unnoticed by her fans. A neon orange sign stapled to a pole on Main Street, addressed to Gomez, read, “Please sing the National Anthem at one of [the] home games: Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.)” and was signed by the Telluride High School volleyball team. Whether Gomez has seen the sign or plans to surprise the team remains unknown, but with Audiard’s tribute during the Friday slot, Saturday might be their only hope.

    However, the team may have to forgive her as the Emmy-nominated actress from “Only Murders in the Building” is likely to be busy schmoozing at the festival. As Jessi Del Monte, Emilia’s wife, Gomez has two standout moments, particularly with the song “El Camino,” that could have the Academy responding to her work. She’ll need to continue putting herself out there, shaking hands and mingling with voters, as campaigning can make a difference. Notable, the supporting actress category has had two Oscar nominees from the same movie approximately 33% of the time. That could push Gomez into the lineup alongside her co-star.

    In a year filled with musicals, including “Better Man,” “Piece by Piece,” “The End” and the upcoming “Wicked,” Audiard’s film stands out. Netflix acquired the film at Cannes and is going full throttle, hoping to snag its first best picture Oscar with this unique drama.

    Expect “Emilia Pérez” to be an across-the-board contender at the Oscars, with potential nominations for cinematography (Paul Guillaume), editing (Juliette Welfing), and music by the composing duo Clément Ducol and Camille.

    The Spanish-language film is also vying to be France’s official selection in this year’s international feature race. It’s been over 30 years since France, once a source of Oscar winners, last won the category. After two consecutive years of controversial selections — “Titane” over “Happening” and “The Taste of Things” over “Anatomy of a Fall”— Netflix remains hopeful that the selection committee will recognize the potential of “Emilia Pérez” to bring the victory back to France.

    As the weekend continues, we’ll see how attendees respond to the film as it begins its long trek on the awards circuit and, possibly, to the 97th Academy Awards.

    And that was it for a lot of us. We didn’t think twice as Mendes and Cabello cozily sidled up to one another, we just let them return to being the weird couple they always were. Then Sabrina started dating
    Saltburnstar Barry Keoghan and we focused on the short stack duo.

    But now, we had to go back in the archives thanks to
    Short n’ Sweet. Songs like Dumb & Poetic take obvious shots at Mendes, Sharpest Tool jabs at Cabello and so does Coincidence. The picture Carpenter has painted isn’t good, and Cabello has even taken a few swings in her own music.

    So if you’re just as lost on the Carpenter-Cabello-Mendes love triangle…you won’t be for long. Here’s the story of how Camila Cabello potentially stole Shawn Mendes back from Sabrina.

    Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter Relationship Timeline

    We all know how
    Cabello was with Shawn Mendes first. After two years together, the pair broke up in 2021. Then, after they were seen kissing at Coachella 2023, rumors were rampant about a reunion. Two months later, they called it quits again.

    But in the midst of it all comes Sabrina Carpenter. In what seemed like a quick whirlwind, Shawn and Sabrina quietly launched their flirtation on Instagram in December 2022. Mendes posted an Instagram where Carpenter commented, “was it cold tho.”

    Fans began to notice how Camila Cabello was interacting more with Sabrina Carpenter posts on Instagram…even liking her BBC Radio 1 performance of Carpenter’s “Late Night Talking” cover. Screenshots have surfaced of Cabello liking countless Carpenter-related posts from around the time Mendes and Carpenter went public.

    By March 13, 2023,
    ET reported that Sabrina Carpenter and Shawn Mendes were dating but “trying to keep things low-key.” Somehow, this news got broken by The Cancelled Podcast.

    This doesn’t last long, however, because Carpenter and Mendes split up sometime between March and April of 2023…and then he’s seen in April with Cabello.

    While there are two sides (or, I guess three in this case?) to every story, all signs point to Cabello swooping in on Mendes immediately after (if not
    during) his relationship with Carpenter.

    And now, fans have noticed that one of Camila’s songs from her new album,

    “Heard you’re back together, and if that’s true/ you’ll just have to taste me while he’s kissing you” sings the chorus of this song. If you need me to spell it out for you, this is clearly about Camila Cabello.

    “Coincidence”

    Ohhh boy, does this tell the entire story. Lyrics include “Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs/Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side?” and “Trying to turn past into the present tense”, it’s clear who this is about. And Carpenter adds she’s not shocked they broke up again.

    “Dumb & Poetic”

    This is for you, Shawn Mendes. Notable lines include “Just because you talk like one, doesn’t make you a man,” “save all your breath for your floor meditation,” “you’d make a great wife/And I promise you those mushrooms aren’t changing your life,” Carpenter rips into Mendes…and this one is obvious.

    Potential Songs About Mendes

    While Mendes certainly isn’t the only sinner in Carpenter’s stories, there are a few questionable songs where it could be about her other exes. Songs like “Sharpest Tool” refer to finding God at his exes house, which could be a reference to either Mendes or Joshua Bassett.

    There’s also a general warning to men, “Lie To Girls,” where she promises you don’t have to lie to a woman to get you to like them…they’ll lie to themselves and make excuses for you if they like you.

    Finally there’s the breakup anthem that closes the ironically short and sweet album, “Don’t Smile,” where Carpenter begs her ex to cry that it ended…not smile because it happened. Again, could be a nod to Shawn Mendes and her wanting him to repent.

    Regardless, this drama has been fun…and with
    Short n’ Sweet potentially gearing up for a #1 Billboard Hot 100 chart spot, Carpenter comes out on top.

    “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” returning for its second season and Adam Sandler’s first comedy special since 2018 are some of the new television, films, music and games headed to a device near you.

    Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: John Legend offers his first-ever children’s album, season four of “Only Murders in the Building” shifts to Los Angeles and DJ and dance producer Zedd is back with an album after nearly a decade.

    NEW MOVIES TO STREAM

    “The Fall Guy” is finally coming to Peacock, where it will be streaming starting Friday, Aug. 30, alongside an “extended cut” version. It might not have reached the blockbuster heights the studio dreamed about during its theatrical run, but it’s pure delight: A comedy, action, romance that soars thanks to the charisma of its stars. Based on the 1980s Lee Majors television series (he gets a cameo), the film features Ryan Gosling as a stunt man, Emily Blunt as his director and dream girl, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as an egotistical movie star and “Ted Lasso’s” Hannah Waddingham as a Diet Coke slurping producer.

    — Ishana Night Shyamalan’s thriller, “The Watchers,” in which Dakota Fanning plays an artist stranded in western Ireland where mysterious creatures lurk and stalk in the night, begins streaming on MAX on Friday, Aug. 30.

    — Emma Stone gives a performance (and interpretive dance) worth watching in “ Kinds of Kindness,” her latest collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos fresh on the heels of her Oscar-winning turn in “Poor Things.” The film, streaming on Hulu on Friday, Aug. 30, is a triptych with a big ensemble cast including Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons (who won a prize for his performance at Cannes), Hong Chau, Margaret Qualley, Mamoudou Athie and Joe Alwyn. Jocelyn Noveck, in her Associated Press review, described it as “a meditation on our free will and the ways we willingly forfeit it to others — in the workplace, at home, and in religion.” Noveck wrote that the “Stone-Lanthimos pairing… is continuing to nurture an aspect of Stone’s talents that increasingly sets her apart: Her fearlessness and the obvious joy she derives from it.”

    — Somehow the Yorgos Lanthimos film is not the most eccentric new streaming offering this week. That title goes to “ Sasquatch Sunset,” Nathan and David Zellner’s experimental film about a family of sasquatches just living their lives. Starring an essentially unrecognizable Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough (in addition to Nathan Zellner), this Sundance curiosity begins streaming on Paramount+ on Monday. In his review for the AP, Mark Kennedy wrote that it is “a bewildering 90-minute, narrator-less and wordless experiment that’s as audacious as it is infuriating. It’s not clear if everyone was high making it or we should be while watching it.”

    NEW MUSIC TO STREAM

    — DJ and dance producer Zedd is back with an album after nearly a decade, “Telos.” The first single is the appropriately titled “Out of Time” featuring Bea Miller, a dreamy tune with atmospheric strings that builds into a dancefloor banger. Zedd has revealed that he started writing “Out Of Time” way back in 2015 but was never able to finish it. That changed with Bea — “her voice added an emotional depth that completed the song. ‘Out Of Time’ really encapsulates the DNA of the Telos album, which is why I chose it to be the song that introduces this new era,” he says.

    — If you’re into a slower change of pace, check out John Legend, who releases his first children’s album, “My Favorite Dream,” on Friday, Aug. 30. It’s produced by the chamber pop polymath Sufjan Stevens and centers on universal themes like love, safety, family and dreams across nine original tracks, two covers, a solo piano track and three bonus covers of Fisher-Price songs.

    — Get ready for a blast of K-pop — on your television. Apple TV+ has the six part documentary “K-Pop Idols,” a behind-the-scenes look at the highly competitive reality of K-pop stardom, starting Friday, Aug. 30. It features Jessi, CRAVITY and BLACKSWAN as they learn choreography and pull everything together to seize the stage. Producers say the series “follows the superstars through trials and triumphs, breaking down cultural and musical barriers in K-pop with passion, creativity and determination as they chase their dreams.”

    RZA takes a sharp turn as a classical composer with the album “A Ballet Through Mud.” The composition made its debut in the form of a ballet last year, performed by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Composed and scored by the Wu-Tang Clan star, the piece mirrors his journey from growing up in the projects in New York City to famous artist, “weaving in tales of love, loss, exploration, Buddhist monks, and a journey ‘through mud.‘” RZA says he began the project early in the pandemic after rediscovering notebooks full of lyrics he had written as a teenager. “The inspiration for ‘A Ballet Through Mud’ comes from my earliest creative output as a teenager, but its themes are universal — love, exploration, and adventure,” he says.

    NEW SHOWS TO STREAM

    — Adam Sandler has the feels in his new Netflix special “Adam Sandler: Love You” featuring his standup and trademark comedy songs. It’s directed by Josh Safdie who — with his brother Benny — co-directed Sandler in the 2019 movie “Uncut Gems.” “Love You” is Sandler’s first comedy special since 2018. It premieres Tuesday on Netflix.

    — Charles, Oliver and Mabel (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) head to Los Angeles in season four of “Only Murders in the Building,” because their podcast is being turned into a film. Their Hollywood life is interrupted when another murder occurs, meaning the trio has a new case to cover. Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria join the cast. “Only Murders in the Building” premieres Tuesday on Hulu.

    — A new animated series in the “Terminator” universe comes to Netflix on Thursday. It follows new characters voiced by “House of the Dragon” actor Sonoya Mizuno, Timothy Olyphant, André Holland Rosario Dawson and Ann Dowd.

    — Season two of “The House of the Dragon” has aired in its entirety on HBO and if your fantasy itch still needs to be scratched, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” returns for its second season Thursday on Prime Video. The story is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, prior to the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.”

    NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

    — Luke Skywalker may get the headlines, but the true MVPs of the Star Wars franchise are rascals like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian. Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws introduces a new scoundrel: Kay Vess, a young thief who’s trying to work her way up the galaxy’s crime syndicates and make the big score. She isn’t a Jedi or a Sith, but she knows how to fire a blaster and fly a spaceship. Outlaws comes from Massive Entertainment, the developers of Tom Clancy’s The Division, and it aims to spread Ubisoft’s brand of open-world adventure across multiple planets. It launches Friday, Aug. 30, on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC.

    — Many gamers who grew up with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System remember 1993’s Secret of Mana as their introduction to a particular type of high-fantasy role-playing. It’s been 15 years since we’ve gotten a new chapter in the marquee Mana series, but Square Enix is finally delivering Visions of Mana. A youngster named Val is chosen to accompany his friend Hinna on a pilgrimage to the life-sustaining Mana Tree, and they’ll need to use magic and swordplay to fight all the monsters along the way. The lush, anime-style graphics are bound to stir memories in old-school RPG fans, starting Thursday, Aug. 29, on PlayStation 5/4, Xbox X/S and PC.

    It’s been more than 12 years since “Wizards of Waverly Place” ended in 2012 after four seasons, but reuniting for the spinoff, “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” it was if no time had passed for stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie.

    “It felt like I was home again,” Gomez told me Thursday at the “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 premiere in Hollywood. “I’m so happy I got to bring back this childhood gift that I was given to new little ones out there.”

    When the original “Wizards” came to a close, Gomez never thought she’d play Alex Russo again. But now she’s hoping the spinoff will be a multi-season run. “We don’t know, but if people like it, we’ll see,” she said.

    David Henrie, who reprises his role as Alex’s brother Justin, told me, “Selena and I and my wife spent so much time over the years drinking wine and talking about where the characters would be, we looked at each other at one point and said, ‘I think we have a show. I think we should go talk to Disney about this.’ And we did. It took years of development to get it exactly where it needed to be.

    “It came out of a place love,” he continued. “The number one thing Selena gets asked about even till today is ‘Wizards.’ It’s a show that meant a lot to a lot of people.”

    Gomez announced the spinoff during Disney’s 2024 upfront presentation in May. Images from the show were released at the same time showing grown-up versions of Alex and Justin along with new Russo family members.

    “It was bonkers,” Henrie said of working with Gomez again. “It was unspoken but we were behind a door and heard, ‘Action,’ we looked at one another and were like, ‘This is crazy.’ It was like a day hadn’t passed in 12 years. We were right back to where we were.”

    “Wizards: Beyond Waverly Place” follows an adult Justin, who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). When Alex brings Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) to his home seeking help, Justin agrees to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.

    Henrie is also looking forward to the potential of more seasons: “It’s such a fertile universe. You could do so much.”

    Henrie is using his original wand in the spinoff. When the show ended in 2012, producers gave the wands framed in glass as wrap presents to the cast. “I was like, I am gonna break this sucker out again,” Henrie said.

    We’re in the best of times (brat summer), but we’re also in the worst of times (constantly fielding articles by Some Guy about how brat summer is dead). But how could brat summer be over if I feel it in my heart? If they’re still playing “Guess ft. Billie Eilish” at Tenants of the Trees in LA (where Charli XCX herself had her birthday party for some reason)? And if the impact of brat summer is still causing ripples through the culture it cannot be over.


    No, I’m not talking about Kamala’s brat green rebrand. I’m talking about something more substantial — the very same thing that had last summer in the same chokehold: the infectious and irresistible power of girlhood.

    Last summer caused a vibe shift. Culture started catering to women. Let’s be real: Women have been the drivers of pop culture for a long time. I, for one, will never forget that artists like The Beatles and Elvis, who are still taken seriously as iconic musical artists today, caused fanatical frenzies, not unlike artists like Justin Bieber and One Direction. Yet, despite our clear good taste, women have historically been written off as fickle while culture catered to men.

    Just think of how the 2000s were defined by blockbuster summer movies. Usually, an action movie would dominate, followed by a “chick flick” that was relegated to date nights or the whims of teenage girls. Yet, when
    Barbenheimer resurrected this dynamic, one had a clear chokehold on the internet and the world. And since I haven’t seen Oppenheimener-flavored Olipops, no prizes for guessing which one it was.

    This summer isn’t defined by movies (Twisters and It Ends With Us aren’t the Barbenheimer redux we wanted) it’s characterized by music. And while the guys gave it the old college try — Kendrick did release the ultimate hater anthem with Not Like Us in the Spring — the girls take it yet again.

    And despite seasonal albums from established pop stars like
    Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande, queer (or queer-coded) female artists have blown up this summer. All of them have also been grafting behind the scenes for years before finally getting their flowers. But now the world is listening. We’re learning. And we’re obsessed.

    Of course, there’s the princess of the summer,
    Sabrina Carpenter, who is the latest Disney veteran to make it big. We’ll get to her Disney drama later, but this summer, it’s all about our Short n Sweet queen’s infectious earworms. We called it earlier this year: she is the moment. Her rise to fame has been inevitable.

    Then there’s the surprise star of the year,
    Chappell Roan. So glad bisexual women decided not to gatekeep this absolute star. The fact that I’ve been listening to Chappell since 2020 and I’m still not tired of “Pink Pony Club” says a lot.

    But
    Charli XCX’s mainstream moment is arguably the most surprising. Charli is a giant to music lovers and, of course, the queer community. A real dyed-in-the-wool party girl, she grew up in the clubs and doesn’t just talk the talk, she throws the parties. Despite her collaborations with literally everyone, her Grammys, and her hits, Charli XCX is only now becoming a household name. Why? Because we’re finally ready for her.

    Girlhood is brat. Brat is girlhood. Girl, it’s so confusing, but it’s about being a girl

    Girlhood is the name of the game and Charli writes for the girls and the gays. Her album speaks to the desire to hold on to the feeling of youth juxtaposed with the realities of growing up. Who can’t relate? She talks about themes integral to girlhood: going on vacation and thinking it will change your life, going to a party and thinking it will change your life, and having dinner with a girl and thinking she hates you.

    The latter was the impetus for the internet-breaking track “The girl, so confusing version with lorde.” After Charli released the original version of “girl, so confusing,” the internet rightly assumed it was about her years-long pseudo-beef with
    Lorde. Lyrics like: “I’m all about throwing parties / You’re all about writing poems,” and “People say we’re alike, they say we’ve got the same hair,” added fuel to the fire of their reported feud. So imagine our surprise when Charli released a version with Lorde herself. Like Miss Ella, honestly, we were speechless.

    Lorde knew what she was doing when she said: “When we put this to bed, the internet will go crazy.” Sure enough, the internet erupted. And it did the same once again when footage was released of the two scream-singing their instant classic of a collab at Charli’s birthday party. What a way to put the feud rumors to bed.

    After Lorde and Charli worked out their decade of competition over a Jack Antonoff beat, the internet speculated: who would be next to quell their beef with the power of song? If it seems like the plot of a Disney movie, get in for the ride — the Disney of it all has just begun.

    A few weeks ago, sources reported that former Disney stars turned stadium-selling pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter might be collaborating on a song. With the upcoming release of Carpenter’s highly anticipated album sneaking up on us, fans speculate that this could be a surprise track waiting on the record.

    If you don’t understand how earth-shattering this is, let me take you back to 2021, when

Everybody knew it: the two were rivals in their careers and in their relationships. We’ll never experience that kind of TMZ-stoked animosity again. But we’re older now. Duff and Lohan are both in new phases of their careers. If they worked it, the (millennial side of the) internet really would go crazy.

    Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber

    These two divas have been competing to be the prince of pop for years. And their silent feud runs deep. In a radio interview at the beginning of Shawn’s career, Justin responded to a question about the other Canadian crooner with the dismissive and deadly, “who’s Shawn Mendes?” Then, after Mendes appeared with Hailey Baldwin at the Met Gala in 2018, Bieber quickly reignited his relationship with our favorite nepo baby and married her. Talk about winning the battle. The two already have a song together, “
    Monster,” but no one is buying that they’ve really worked it out. I want to see Shawn at Justin and Hailey’s baby shower or bust.

    Justin Bieber and Harry Styles

    Speaking of pop feuds, Bieber and Styles have been toeing a tension-laden line since 2012. Rumors swirled that One Direction was supposed to open for Bieber on his
    Believe tour but the plans were canceled — and dreams died. Reasons abound as to why but I suppose we’ll never know. As someone who attended that Believe tour, I have been waiting for them to work it out on the remix ever since.

    Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers

    Other feuds from my childhood I want fixed: the Disney Channel stars involved in the seminal sustainability single, “Send It On.” That was our Fleetwood Mac
    Rumors. With loyalties crossed, relationships breaking friendships, and a whole lot of teen angst going on, the Disney Channel producers had one song and one song only to change lives. While we were watching “Send It On” play during Disney breaks, we had no clue about the drama simmering beneath the surface. But imagine if they put that to bed? The internet would go crazy.

    Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift

    Of all of Taylor’s exes, she’s clearly already worked it out with Taylor Lautner — who was backflipping across her Eras tour stages for a brief stint last summer. But the reconciliation I really want is between Taylor and Joe. Sure, she’s written some scathing songs about him. And she told the world on
    Ellen that he broke up with her in 17 seconds. And she’s befriended Sophie Turner. But for a brief moment, Taylor made up with Kanye West, so stranger things have happened. Can you imagine a mashup between “SOS” by The Jonas Brothers and “The Story of US” by Taylor Swift? My Spotify Wrapped would become unshareable.

    Katy Perry and Taylor Swift

    Though allegedly this feud started due to the backup dancers, Perry has become one of
    Swift’s famed list of enemies. And as the queen of “Karma,” Swifties know that all of Taylor’s adversaries never fare well — just look at Ye or Scooter Braun. Katy Perry’s comeback might be another one of these casualties. Ouch. If the two managed to reconcile their “Bad Blood,” imagine the album Katy Perry would create.

    Nelly Furtado and Fergie

    Remember the song “
    Give It To Me” by Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, and Justin Timberlake? Thanks to TikTok, the song experienced a recent resurgence. But did you know the entire song is a diss track? Justin Timberlake’s verse is about Prince (more insane than “what tour? The world tour”), Timbaland’s verse is about Scott Storch, and Nelly Furtado’s verse is about Fergie. But what if we stopped pitting two pop icons against each other and instead begged them both to have a comeback … together?

    The Don’t Worry Darling Cast

    The
    Don’t Worry Darling press tour pitted all our favorite stars against each other in the public arena: Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pine, and Gemma Chan. And while that trainwreck of a movie doesn’t need a sequel, I would animatedly watch one just to keep keen eyes on the press tour.

    The It Ends With Us Cast

    If we thought there would never be another press tour as dramatic as
    Don’t Worry Darling, Justin Baldoni of the It Ends With Us cast just hired Johnny Depp’s lawyer — so it’s inarguably surpassed its dramatic predecessor. With Blake Lively and Baldoni both waging a press war, some are hoping It Ends With Us will just … end. But I need a little entertainment to tide me over into fall. And if the movie itself won’t provide it, the hope of a last-gasp reconciliation might.

    Kendrick Lamar and Drake

    I know this will never happen. In fact, if it did, I’d
    lose some respect for Kendrick, honestly. But sometimes I like to imagine that all of this was just marketing for a joint album a la “Watch the Throne.”

    Gomez clarified in an interview this week that she was not thinking about selling her beauty brand, Rare Beauty, or taking it public. The company is reportedly worth $2 billion.

    “I don’t have any plans on that, genuinely,” Gomez told TIME.

    Gomez mainly focuses on Rare Beauty’s product development and philanthropy, overseeing the Rare Impact Fund, which has raised $13 million since Gomez founded the company in 2020.

    She told TIME that she will be working on products for Rare “for the next few years” and that she never wanted the company “to be about making a lot of money and that’s it.”

    Gomez’s remarks refute a March report that Rare Beauty was in private talks about a possible sale or IPO.

    Rare is popular on social media and sells an array of $30 and under makeup, body care, and brushes.

    Rare reportedly hit more than $400 million in net sales from February 2023 to February 2024.

    After the Biebers announced they were expecting their first child together on May 9, 2024, Benny took to his Instagram Stories to share a timely video with his followers. The short clip was recorded from a camcorder video, and in it, Selena could be seen blowing a kiss toward the camera (and presumably, at Benny behind the lens) while doing her makeup. She appeared to be holding her Rare Beauty mascara tube in one hand, with the wand in her other hand. While Benny’s Instagram Story didn’t address the recent news about Selena’s ex-boyfriend directly, his post did seem to tell followers everything they needed to know: his girlfriend is doing just fine, thank you very much.

    The “Lose You to Love Me” singer and the producer have been dating since June 2023. The pair went public with their relationship a few months later in December 2023, after Selena revealed they were dating when she started liking fan account posts on Instagram speculating that the pair were an item. “He is my absolute everything in my heart,” she commented on one post, confirming that the rumors were true. Since then, the pair have been pretty much inseparable. They often post each other on Instagram, and Benny even attended the 2024 Golden Globes as Selena’s date.

    Things between Benny and Selena seem to be pretty serious, as a source told Us Weekly in May 2024 that Selena considers Benny to be “the love of her life.” According to a second source who spoke to the outlet, “She definitely sees this relationship going the distance. They’ve talked about marriage and having children and are very much on the same page.”

    While the happy couple continues to make plans for their future, that hasn’t stopped some from trying to bring Selena’s ex, Justin Bieber, into the conversation. As fans of Justin and Selena know, the pair had an on-again, off-again relationship from 2010 until March 2018. Later that same year, Justin moved on with his now-wife, Hailey Bieber. The pair had a whirlwind romance, getting engaged just a few weeks after they started dating. By September 2018, Justin and Hailey were already married. The pair had a civil ceremony in New York City, and eventually, they had a larger wedding with friends and family in 2019.

    Now, after nearly six years of marriage, Justin and Hailey have taken the next big step in their relationship. The couple announced on May 9, 2024, that they were expecting their first child together—and naturally, the announcement had some wondering what Justin’s ex, Selena Gomez, made of the news. The Only Murders in the Building star notably disabled her comments in the days leading up to Hailey and Justin’s announcement, only leading to further speculation from social media users who might otherwise hash things out in the comments section of her posts.

    For now, however, we’ll have to take Benny’s post as the clearest update on Selena’s state of mind. The Rare Beauty founder has yet to publicly comment on her ex’s growing family, and her lack of response is a response in itself.

Just days before the Biebers announced they were expecting their first child together, the “Lose You to Love Me” singer made the decision to disable her comments on social media to avoid any unnecessary drama.

    The Only Murders in the Building star explained her decision in an interview with Today’s Hoda Kotb at a mental health summit put together by her Rare Beauty Impact Fund. “I disabled all my comments on my photos on Instagram for only my friends. So I think I’ve created boundaries to help me,” Selena told Kotb.

    “Obviously people fussed about it. They fuss about everything,” the 31-year-old said. Despite the response from fans, Selena insisted that it was the right decision for herself. “I felt empowered by doing that, by saying, ‘This is just for me,’” she added.

    This isn’t the first time the Rare Beauty founder is making a change to her social media habits. She has taken multiple social media breaks throughout the years, and during a panel at the TIME100 Summit in April 2024, she opened up about her past decision to let her team manage all of her posts and comments on Instagram. “I took four years off of Instagram, and I let my team post for me for those years,” she shared at the time. “I felt like it was the most rewarding gift I gave myself.”

    During her break, Selena remembers being “more present.” She explained, “I was happier. I would actually get real phone calls [from] people telling me about their story, and I could actually hear it instead of going, ‘Oh, I already know what you did today.’ It’s more human.”

    As the world’s most-followed woman on Instagram, it makes complete sense for Selena to set healthy boundaries around social media—and that’s not even considering the potential drama from Justin and Hailey Bieber‘s recent announcement. The couple, who have been together since 2018, revealed they were expecting their first child together in a heartfelt post to social media on May 9, 2024. While a bundle of joy is typically a reason to celebrate, the rumored feud between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber was bound to have some social media users spreading hate instead.

    As fans of Bieber and Gomez know, the pair had an on-again, off-again relationship that spanned several years. Their final breakup took place around March 2018, but it wasn’t long before Bieber moved on with Hailey Baldwin (now Bieber.) The pair had briefly dated in the past, and officially got back together in May 2018. The couple then got engaged in July 2018, just a few weeks after rekindling their romance. They went on to get married in a civil ceremony in New York City in September 2018. A year later, the Biebers had a larger religious ceremony with family and friends in South Carolina.

    Their recent post to Instagram also revealed that they had a vow renewal in Hawaii ahead of their pregnancy announcement. In footage posted to social media, the Biebers can be seen standing at the altar again. Hailey wore a white lace Saint Laurent dress, which showed off her growing baby bump, along with a matching veil.

    The pair have always been candid about their desire to have children. “We always knew that we were aligned on what we wanted in our future,” Hailey told ELLE in 2021. “We had talked about wanting to be married young and having a family young and building a life. Even before we knew we wanted to be with each other.” Now, it seems that dream is finally coming true.

    While Sabrina Carpenter might not have written a song about cappuccino, “Espresso” has plenty of (sonic) froth to offer. And it’s of the variety that very much mimics Selena Gomez’s stylings for her own summer anthem, “Love On.” Although the latter was released in February, months before summer was a thought on anyone’s mind, Gomez seemed to be aware of the fact that seasons, at this juncture, are merely a state of mind (what with so much environmental/meteorological inconsistency at present). Carpenter, too, got a bit of a jump on the season by releasing “Espresso” in mid-April, just before her weekend performance at Coachella, where her new(ish) boyfriend, Barry Keoghan, was the recipient of many a lascivious glance. 

    To complement the froth of a song that touts, “Say you can’t sleep, baby, I know/That’s that me espresso/Move it up, down, left, right, oh/Switch it up like Nintendo” (lyrics that very much smack of Ariana Grande on “34+35” or “positions”—or even her gaming-oriented line, “Yet you played me like Atari” on “eternal sunshine”), Carpenter brings her listeners a sumptuous, beachy visual to go with it. As Carpenter herself said, “Since the day I heard the song, I saw a beach atmosphere—and more specifically this kind of old school [meets] modern environment.” She also added, “I also just wanted a pool car, to be frank.” Change the phrase to “girls just wanna have pool cars,” because Carpenter is sure to make this specific type of vehicle more appealing than when Lourdes Leon, Grimes, Amandla Stenberg and Kenya Kinski-Jones rode around in one for a Stella McCartney perfume ad. 

    Proving she’s hit the big time by getting Dave Meyers to direct, the video opens on people getting a tan, with part of their skin becoming redder than others to spell out “Sabrina Carpenter,” “Espresso” and “Directed by Dave Meyers.” The dreamy, faraway sound of the intro (that sounds vaguely like the one in Katy Perry’s “Chained to the Rhythm”) continues to play as Carpenter, shows off sunglasses (akin to Zendaya’s in the Challengers poster) that reflect what she’s seeing (hot boys). The tune endures as the cinematography shifts from color to black and white. It’s then that the shot shifts its focus to a speedboat cutting through the water. One that, obviously, Carpenter is driving as she puts her hand above her forehead as though in search of something (maybe hard dick). The man riding in the back appears to relish that Carpenter is in control, a vibe that reflects the message Carpenter wanted to get across with the single: “[It’s] kind of about seeing femininity as your superpower, and embracing the confidence of being that bitch.”

    Gomez’s “Love On” radiates a similar confidence, with such faux ominous warnings as, “Wait ‘til I turn my love on…/I’m a rollercoaster ride, baby, jump on/Come on, come on/‘Cause, baby, if you can’t tell (baby, if you can’t tell)/You’re what I wanna love on, oh.” In her accompanying video, directed by Gregory “Greg” Ohrel, the aura is also saturated in a summery mood, with Gomez specifically wanting to channel the South of France (even though the video was shot inside the Villa de Leon in Malibu—L.A. is so good at doubling for various locations, after all). This includes her sitting on a balcony with a picturesque oceanside view while she’s given a dubious manicure from a grudging butler (side note: Carpenter favors a pedicure in her video instead, with pampering being a running motif in both women’s alternate worlds). Gomez’s variety of costume changes (“got you covered like garments”) amid a sea of kissing couples is what stands out the most—along with her passionate consumption of a croissant and coffee. Which brings us back to caffeine as the metaphor Carpenter chooses to wield for the kind of lovelorn feeling she invokes in people (men or otherwise). Except that, much like Britney Spears on “Oops!…I Did It Again,” she can’t help but shrug off anyone who gets too attached. 

    This is exactly why, when the guy on the boat starts trying to “love on” her, she veers sharply so that he falls right off. For an added bonus, she manages to latch onto his wallet before he literally dips out. Because, in addition to pool cars, girls still just wanna have funds. At this moment, the gold credit card is the only object in color before the palette switches out of black and white and again into color. Carpenter subsequently approaches the shore with a lifesaver around her as she clutches the credit card and croons, “I can’t relate to desperation/My ‘give a fucks’ are on vacation.” So, too, is Carpenter herself now that she has a subsidized one via this guy’s plastic. 

    We soon see her on the beach bedecked with a headscarf that’s styled in the Old Hollywood (or babushka) manner as she prances around with an umbrella—these accoutrements (along with a dash of Wes Anderson-inspired cinematography thrown in) lending the old school flavor she wanted for the video. The same old school one that Gomez imbued “Love On” with sonically and visually as well (complete with an array of 60s-inspired ensembles Gomez dons in the video to complement the throwback sound). 

    While both singers favor a chirpy, high-pitched intonation to help carry off lyrics that would otherwise be difficult to “accept” (e.g., Gomez saying, “Why are we conversin’ over this steak tartare when we could be/Somewhere other than here/Makin’ out in the back of a car” and “Or we could make a memoir, yeah/On the back wall of the last stall/In the bathroom at The Bazaar”). And while it might be difficult for some to stomach the more cornball lyrics in “Love On,” Carpenter has a way of making them easier to, er, swallow by painting herself as an aloof femme fatale. Indeed, many of the lyrics feel like pointed shade at Keoghan’s ex/baby mama, Alyson Kierans. For example, “Too bad your ex don’t do it for ya/Walked in and dream came trued it for ya/Soft skin and I perfumed it for ya/I know I Mountain Dew it for ya [this being a line very much in Lana Del Rey’s wheelhouse]/That morning coffee, brewed it for ya/One touch and I brand newed it for ya.” The playful songwriting style, courtesy of Carpenter and co-writers Amy Allen, Steph Jones and Julian Bunetta, renders nouns and adjectives into verbs and turns brands into wordplay. Maybe Carpenter is more Shakespearean than one might think. 

    Granted, Shakespeare never could have fathomed a woman so beach and boy crazy (with female characters like Juliet Capulet only crazy for one boy). Traits Carpenter is happy to showcase as the video continues while she laps up the surfer dudes and an ice cream cone before finally getting her “just deserts” for stealing an overly-into-her man’s credit card and ditching him in the water back at the beginning of this little romp. Of course, that’s the most unrealistic thing about the narrative: a pretty blonde white girl would never get such a comeuppance. Which is probably why Gomez and Carpenter should have swapped concepts.

    Another day, another rumor. This time, someone decided to make a pretty random claim that Selena Gomez dated JFK’s grandson, John Kennedy Schlossberg, back in 2020—but the actress was quick to set the record straight.

    The Only Murders in the Building star took to social media to respond to a fan account’s post about the rumor on April 12, 2024. In the post, the fan account, @feelingsforsel, alleged that several tabloids were claiming that she previously had an “affair” with the former president’s grandson.

    “According to a few tabloids @SelenaGomez and John Kennedy Schlossberg had an affair from 2020 to 2021,” the fan account’s post read. “The grandson of the US President John Kennedy promised her the White House and she fell for it.” To be clear, while Schlossberg is JFK’s only grandson, he doesn’t work directly in politics and has no claim to the White House. Instead, he works as a lawyer in New York City.

    It’s also worth noting that the fan account didn’t attribute the rumor to any direct sources, making the claim pretty flimsy in the first place. But in case there was any room for doubt, Gomez made it abundantly clear that these rumors are exactly that—just rumors. “Never met this human sorry,” the Wizards of Waverly Place alum, 31, commented on the post. The fan account replied to Gomez’s clarification, writing, “these rumors are CRAZY. well either way love you gurl,” and later shared the exchange on X.

    After shutting down the rumors about the unfounded “affair,” Gomez shared a cute snap of her current boyfriend, Benny Blanco, on her Instagram Story. “I love you,” she captioned the snapshot of the music producer kissing her hand in a car. Gomez confirmed that she was in a relationship with Blanco in December 2023 after weeks of speculation. She made the admission by commenting on a post from PopFaction with a headline that read, “Selena Gomez Seemingly Confirms That She Is in a Relationship.” At the time, Gomez simply replied, “Facts.”

    She went on to describe Blanco as her “absolute everything in my heart,” before revealing that the pair had been dating for about six months at that point. In response to fan criticism, she also commented, “then why has he been the best thing that’s ever happened to me. The end.”

    Since then, the couple have been going strong even as Gomez spends time away from her beau while filming the next season of Only Murders in New York City. “They are so in love,” a source recently told People. “It’s a very serious relationship, and they’re making long distance work while she’s in New York for work commitments.”

    The insider went on to add, “Benny makes her feel special and they try to see each other as much as possible. She really does feel like it’s the best she’s ever been treated by a guy, and she’s had a certain glow since they started dating.”
