  • 5 things to know about rare emperor penguin sightings

    [ad_1]

ORLANDO, Fla. — The world’s largest and, arguably, the most iconic penguin species is making their SeaWorld Orlando debut.

    1. SeaWorld Orlando has welcomed 16 emperor penguins. The Orlando theme park is now the only place you can see this species in the Western Hemisphere.
    2. The emperors came from SeaWorld San Diego — touted as leading global efforts in emperor penguin care and breeding since the early 1980s.
    3. Native to the harsh, frozen landscape of Antarctica, emperor penguins are built for life on the ice. They are known to dive deeper than any other bird species.
    4. SeaWorld Orlando upgraded its existing Antarctica Realm to meet the precise environmental needs of the emperors, meaning the habitat’s temp is 28 degrees. “On a really hot day, to be in here for 5-10 minutes, it feels so good,”  said SeaWorld Orlando President Jon Peterson, during a backstage visit.
    5. Here’s another fun fact about emperor penguins. The males incubate a single egg atop their feet under a brood patch. The male also fasts during incubation, losing up to 45% of his body weight. Park guests can now find the newest penguins at SeaWorld’s Antarctica attraction.

And in preparation of the event, SeaWorld is offering a ‘sinister sale‘: guests can save up to 70 percent on Howl-O-Scream tickets through July 28.

Howl at the moon as it illuminates this frightful event with four new houses: “Ultimate Gamble”, “Water’s Edge Wellness Center,” “Atlantis Journey Below” and “Farm 51,” where extraterrestrial visitors haunt a farm as you stumble across a dark cornfield abyss to escape.

Howl-O-Scream is set to introduce three new scare zones, including “Paradise Palms,” “Cannibal Horror” and “Seeds of The Coven,” where nature is against humanity, and guests must try to walk through this arboreal nightmare before becoming the next harvest. Returning scare zone favorites like “Blood Light District,” “Toxic Turmoil,” “Terrors of the Deep” and more can also be expected in the lineup.

SeaWorld rolls out extended hours through August

Orlando theme park SeaWorld will implement extended hours on Saturdays starting this week on July 13 and running through early August.

Starting this weekend, the park will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., to give early birds a chance to experience the park before the stifling heat and/or rain comes rolling in.

Something new for park guests to check out is the Penguin Trek family coaster, now open to the public with its snowmobile styled cars for a jaunt through Antarctic environments with speeds up to 43 mph. (Though our own Seth Kubersky was less than enthused.)

Other new doings at SeaWorld this summer include the Bands, Brew & BBQ live music and  food experience, along with the Xceleration show and the Shamu & Crew parade. As part of these extended hours, guests can partake in dance parties and other shows after the sun sets on top of their Ignite Fireworks show.

SeaWorld’s extended Saturday hours of operation run until Aug. 3.

Aquatica Orlando announced this week a brand-new, digitally immersive waterslide experience set to open March 15.

On Tassie’s Underwater Twist, riders will be virtually transported to Australia’s Shark Bay and (virtually) encounter manta rays, whales, fish, plant life, sea turtles and of course, sharks.

The slide also features an educational element: The importance of seagrass will be emphasized, encouraging visitors to learn about seagrass meadows and the marine life that depend on them to live.

“Aquatica Orlando is proud to welcome the all-new Tassie’s Underwater Twist to our park, with its one-of-a-kind immersive experience and adrenaline-pumping twists and turns,” Brad Gilmour, park president of Aquatica Orlando, said in a release. “We are so excited for guests to experience this incredible immersive attraction that only Aquatica could create, while making unforgettable memories with family and friends.”

Penguin Trek is poised to open at SeaWorld

SeaWorld is making waves with their 60th-anniversary celebrations coming later this month, bringing new shows and attractions to the theme park.

The “So Much More to Sea” campaign will feature new rides, attractions, merchandise, shows, ticket offers, food, drinks and more, with promotions starting on March 21. The starting date marks almost exactly 60 years since the first SeaWorld park opened in San Diego, California.

The celebration will continue through Sunday, March 24, with more special events and experiences coming later this summer.

To mark the occasion, SeaWorld will finally open the long-awaited “Penguin Trek” attraction, a rollercoaster with twists and turns themed around the icy glaciers of Antarctica.

SeaWorld will also debut new Cirque de Soleil-style live shows, a brand new character parade and exclusive merchandise and food and drink options.

SeaWorld Orlando recently celebrated its own 50th anniversary back in December with exclusive merchandise offers and gifts.
