A 36-year-old felon who escaped while he was being arrested in Lemon Grove by San Diego County Sheriff’s Office deputies was at-large Wednesday.

Hiram Sanchez, who was wanted on a felony warrant, was observed by deputies in the 7100 block of Broadway Dec. 18 and placed in handcuffs, authorities said.

During the arrest, Sanchez ran from deputies onto State Route 94. Because of the danger to deputies, they did not pursue him on the freeway, authorities said.

A search involving a San Diego Police Department helicopter, California Highway Patrol officers and a sheriff’s K-9 unit was unable to locate Sanchez, authorities said.

The San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force is actively looking for Sanchez, who is considered dangerous and is believed to be somewhere in East County, possibly in El Cajon or La Mesa.

Sanchez was described as a Hispanic man, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall weighing around 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white hat, black shirt, back athletic pants and white shoes.

Anyone seeing Sanchez is urged to call 911, the San Diego County Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477 or the Lemon Grove Sheriff’s Substation at 619-337-2000.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has released body-worn video from a shooting involving a deputy in Lakeside earlier this month.

Deputy Chris Bearss fired harmlessly on Eric Mitchell Ralls, 30, of Poway, on Dec. 10 after the latter claimed to have a gun and then made a threatening move toward him, authorities said.

In the video and accompanying briefing released Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said the events began shortly before 10:30 a.m. that day, when the Lakeside Fire Department received a report of a man possibly experiencing a drug overdose in the 9200 block of Briette Place.

Sheriff’s deputies also responded to the emergency call at the request of firefighters and arrived to find Ralls no longer there. They began searching the neighborhood and found him on an embankment in the neighborhood near Lake Jennings.

Bearss approaches Ralls from the other side of a chain-link fence, and the suspect allegedly tells him he is armed with a gun, then “reaches behind his back towards his waistband as if he is reaching for the gun eventually getting into a shooting stance with his hands,” sheriff’s officials said. “Deputy Bearss fires his weapon at the man, but misses. The man then runs away. Deputy Bearss chases after him.”

Ralls was eventually arrested by multiple deputies a short distance away.

Ralls, who allegedly went on to assault a medic while en route to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa for a post-arrest evaluation, was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of resisting arrest and battering an emergency worker.

No weapon was located at the scene, authorities said.

Bearss has been with the county law enforcement agency for about two years.

The San Diego Police Department is investigating the shooting per a Memorandum of Agreement signed in 2022 to avoid appearances of a conflict of interest in law enforcement shootings.

A 55-year-old Vista man suspected of killing his mother has been arrested, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Tad Christopher Johnson, 55, was arrested at a home in the 2100 block of Riviera Drive in Vista on Tuesday afternoon after deputies found 80-year-old Linda Johnson of Arizona gravely injured there while investigating a reported assault, according to Lt. Juan Marquez.

Paramedics took the woman to a hospital, where she died the following day, Marquez said. The exact cause of her death is under investigation, as are “the motivation and circumstances of the crime,” Marquez said.

Also remaining unclear on Thursday was who lives in the home where the alleged homicide occurred, though detectives believe the residence might belong to a member of the mother and son’s family, according to Marquez.

The suspect was being held without bail at Vista Detention Facility pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.

A man was arrested early Friday after San Marcos Sheriff’s deputies found him with drugs and two firearms, including a ghost gun.

Just after 3 a.m. on Oct. 10, deputies discovered Manuel Vargas, 31, asleep behind the wheel of his car in the 1500 block of Linda Vista Drive.

Narcotic contraband was visible inside the vehicle, leading to his arrest on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia. Deputies, Sheriff’s officials said in a news release, later located additional narcotics.

A search of the car, they said, also uncovered a small case on the passenger floorboard containing two handguns — a loaded, unserialized Glock-style 9mm with a high-capacity magazine and an unloaded .22 LR Pietro Beretta semi-automatic.

Investigators determined Vargas was prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition. The weapons, ammunition and narcotics were seized.

Vargas was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on felony charges, including carrying a loaded firearm in public, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a high-capacity magazine and possession of narcotics and paraphernalia.
