  • As ‘Scream 7’ Arrives, Its Studios Fight to Own Ghostface’s… Uh, Face

Scream 7 hits theaters at the end of this month, and the promo game is gradually building up. While Sidney Prescott fights another Ghostface or two, franchise owners Paramount and Spyglass are in a legal fight for the rights to the villain’s iconic mask.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, the two companies are taking SFX studio Alterian Ghost Factory to court before it can threaten copyright infringement. With this suit, Paramount and Spyglass hope to file a court order to prevent Alterian’s suit, claiming the company “intentionally slept on its purported rights in the iconic ‘Ghostface’ mask used throughout the Scream franchise for 30 years.”

The Ghostface mask was developed for Halloween in the early ’90s by Fun World and later discovered by Scream producer Marianne Maddalena. It was later licensed for the movie and featured throughout the franchise and its different sequels, with the one exception being the MTV show. Alterian’s arguing that since it created the underlying design first, Fun World was in the legal wrong when it licensed out the final version to Paramount. Conversely, Paramount believes Fun World deserves Alterian’s ire and that Alterian lost any right to call ownership of Ghostface after spending decades without taking any legal action.

“[It] has never legally established that it owns the rights to the Ghostface mask, and it will not be able to prove it now in this litigation,” reads Paramount’s complaint. “And seeking to disrupt the release of a completed motion picture mere weeks before its release—the seventh installment of a franchise that Alterian watched grow in silence for three decades—is an outrageous attempt to shake down [Paramount and Spyglass].”

Scream 7 is in theaters on February 27, and the legal fight for Ghostface may continue beyond that date.

  • Our 10 Most Anticipated Movies of Early 2026

The new year is almost here, and before we start thinking about Star Wars, The Avengers, or Christopher Nolan, let’s slow things down a bit. While the rest of 2026 is obviously loaded with very exciting, very big movies, the next three months have some pretty interesting, intriguing, and highly anticipated films too. Plenty to hold our interest before the more traditionally blockbuster-filled months.

Like what, exactly? Below are our 10 most anticipated genre films releasing from January through the end of March.

    10. Night Patrol (January 16)

Justin Long, Jermaine Fowler, CM Punk, and more star as Los Angeles police officers who find themselves face-to-face with some very unnatural things in the middle of a gang war. We’ve heard that things get really wild and that it’s a very good time.

    9. Mercy (January 23)

When he’s framed for the murder of his wife, Chris Pratt has to use an advanced law-enforcement AI that he himself invented to prove his innocence in a very short amount of time. The trailers have been cool, so we’re hoping for a ride.

    8. Hoppers (March 6)

Any time Pixar releases a movie, you have to take notice, and its first 2026 release (the other being Toy Story 5) is the hilarious-looking story of a woman who puts her consciousness in an animal and mistakenly convinces them to try and overtake humanity.

    7. Send Help (January 30)

The legendary Sam Raimi returns to the genre that made him famous with this intense-looking thriller about two co-workers who end up deserted on an island together. Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien star, and we’re praying for a little of that Raimi magic.

    6. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die (February 13)

Sam Rockwell stars in this bonkers-looking time travel tale about a man who is sent into the past to try to save the future. Or something like that. It seems insane, and we can’t wait.

    5. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (March 27)

We loved Radio Silence’s 2019 film about a woman stuck in the middle of a family’s sick game, and now we are counting the days to its follow-up, which returns to the story soon after the events of the first. Add a bunch of new actors into the mix, and this could be as special as the original.

    4. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (January 16)

Nia DaCosta’s follow-up to last year’s excellent Danny Boyle sequel appears as if it’s taking the 28 Years franchise to some bold new places. Plus, the buzz is so good about this one, Sony has already greenlit its sequel.

    3. The Bride! (March 6)

The year 2025 brought us one great Frankenstein movie, and we think 2026 is going to do the same. Maggie Gyllenhaal returns to the director’s chair with this punk rock take on the classic monster story from the woman’s point of view. Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley and Batman himself, Christian Bale, star as the creatures.

    2. Scream 7 (February 27)

It’s a bummer that Scream 7 won’t directly follow the story set up by the previous two Scream movies, but we’re still holding out hope. Neve Campbell is back in an expanded role, and franchise co-creator Kevin Williamson directs for the first time in the series. Both suggest good things. Also, each Scream film brings its own unique surprises, so we’re expecting nothing less from this one.

    1. Project Hail Mary (March 20)

For the first time in over a decade, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing a new film, and this one looks special. It’s based on a book by The Martian author Andy Weir; Ryan Gosling stars as a man trying to save the world in deep space. To do so, he’ll have to team up with an alien. If the movie is half as wonderful as the book, this one is going to be an all-timer.

  • Scream 7 Gets Great News from Matthew Lillard Following Test Screenings

Scream 7 has received some great news from Matthew Lillard.

Scream 7 arrives in United States theaters in February 2026 from Paramount Pictures. Directed by Kevin Williamson, the movie stars Lillard, Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Isabel May as Tatum Evans, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, Joel McHale as Mark Evans, and more.

What did Matthew Lillard say about Scream 7?

Speaking with ComingSoon in an exclusive interview, Lillard said that Scream 7 is “testing through the roof” following some test screenings.

He explained when asked about how it feels to come back to the Scream franchise and work with Williamson again, “It was awesome. The reality is that I remember where I was when I got the phone call. I remember in the park, exactly where it happened. Seeing the phone call from Kevin Williamson. We had seen each other at a party like three weeks beforehand at Mike Flanagan’s house. I was like, ‘What is he calling me for? That’s so strange.’ He was talking about going in and doing Scream 7. And even at the party, he was like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to go shoot the movie, I’m going to direct it.’ I was like, ‘That’s incredible.’ And he never mentioned anything. But we got on the phone and was like, ‘Do you want to come back and play with us?’ I was like, ‘You bastard, you could have said something like three weeks ago!’

“Look, I’m excited. What I’m most excited about is I think the movie, with Kevin involved and with Neve back — listen, I love the Radio Silence guys. I thought Melissa Barrera was fantastic. But I’m excited to see where this new iteration of Scream goes. The movie is testing through the roof, I think people are going to love it, and I think fans are going to lose their minds. It’s very fun.”

The official synopsis for Scream 7 reads, “When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.”

Scream 7 will be released in United States theaters on February 27, 2026.

  • Is This Our First Looks at the Heroes of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s filming may take a pause after Tom Holland suffered a mild on-set injury. Joachim Rønning’s next film after Tron: Ares is heading to Paramount. Plus, 20th Century may have found its next Alien director. To me, my spoilers!

    Scream 7

According to Entertainment Weekly, Hayden Panettiere is confirmed to return as her fan-favorite character, Kirby Reed, in Scream 7.

    Here Be Monsters

Deadline reports Paramount has acquired the rights to Joachim Rønning’s next film, Here Be Monsters, described “as an intense survival thriller at sea reminiscent of films like Alien and The Thing” with “franchise ambitions.” Ridley Scott is attached to produce.

    Alien

According to a new rumor from World of Reel, Demián Rugna (Where Evil Lurks, Terrified) may be 20th Century’s top choice to direct the next theatrical Alien project.

    Avengers: Doomsday

A handbag posted to Instagram by make-up artist Giovanna Ponci seemingly reveals every character’s costume in Avengers: Doomsday—including the returning X-Men. Head over to Comic Book to have a look (and appreciate Mystique’s comic-accurate white dress finally making the transition to screen).

    Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Deadline reports a poorly timed stunt caused Tom Holland to suffer a “mild” concussion while filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actor was briefly “hospitalized amid filming on the Glasgow set” and will refrain from filming for the next few days to recover. Sony and Marvel are reportedly discussing how to continue production in the meantime.

    The Incredible Shrinking Man

Universal has released two separate trailers for a French remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man starring Jean Dujardin.

    Theater Is Dead

Elsewhere, the ancient but fledgling medium of theater demands human sacrifice to keep its performances running in the trailer for Theater Is Dead.

    Gen V

Finally, HBO Max has released a “this season on…” trailer for Gen V‘s second year.

  • Neve Campbell Talks Scream 7 Return, Kevin Williamson Directing

Neve Campbell Talks Scream 7 Return, Kevin Williamson Directing

The upcoming Scream 7 will feature a revamped cast following the departure of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, Neve Campbell is set to return after missing Scream 7.

While Campbell appeared in 2022’s Scream along with franchise mainstays Courtney Cox and David Arquette, she wasn’t in 2023’s Scream VI due to a pay dispute between her and Paramount Pictures.

Speaking to People, Campbell said she missed not being in the franchise, and is happy to be back.

“Those movies have been such a big part of my life and it means so much to me, and I was sad to miss the last one, to not be a part of it,” Campbell said. “I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way. I think that means a lot to women and to society. I’m grateful to be able to step in into Sidney’s shoes again and tell her story.”

While Campbell’s return is being praised by fans, the development of Scream 7 has been filled with some controversy, to say the least.

The road to Scream 7 has been controversial

Earlier this year, Spyglass Media Group fired Melissa Barrera from the franchise for speaking out against the Israel and Palestine conflict. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Barrera recalled what a tough time it was in the moment.

“It’s definitely hard, because I was just in such a cloudy state of mind, but I was very fortunate,” said Barrera. “I had a lot of support from the people around me: my team and specifically my publicists — they just carried me.”

Shortly after Barrera was fired, Jenna Ortega also dropped out of Scream 7 before Christopher Landon announced he’d no longer be directing the film in December 2023.

“It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare,” Landon said on X at the time. “And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing, and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”
