Uber has quietly begun piloting in-app video recording for its drivers in India, TechCrunch has learned and confirmed with the company. The tool is meant to deter misconduct in a market where most drivers do not use dashcams, according to Uber.
Half a dozen Uber drivers in the Delhi–NCR region told TechCrunch they sometimes face misconduct from riders and, in some cases, are threatened with false complaints about their behavior — allegations that can lead to penalties or even account suspensions.
“Even female passengers traveling late at night insist that we follow the route they want instead of what’s shown on the map. If we refuse, they threaten to file false complaints,” said one driver, who requested anonymity out of fear of losing his account.
Drivers said the in-app video recording feature could help protect them in such situations by providing evidence when disputes arise. Still, some questioned whether Uber would back them in cases involving riders, noting that passengers pay for the trip and can easily switch to competing platforms if dissatisfied.
The pilot, which began rolling out in phases in May, is now live in 10 cities across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Lucknow, the company confirmed to TechCrunch.
Riders receive an in-trip notification when video recording is active.

“All recordings are double-encrypted, stored on the device, and cannot be accessed by anyone — including Uber — unless a user chooses to share them as part of a safety report,” an Uber spokesperson said, adding that the recordings are automatically deleted after a week if they are not shared.

The video tool builds on Uber’s in-app audio recording feature, which launched in India in 2023. Video recording was first tested in the U.S. in 2022 and is already available in Canada and Brazil.
As the pilot expands, Uber will have to balance the feature’s potential to defuse disputes with broader questions about privacy and surveillance in one of its prominent markets. It is unclear when the video recording tool will be rolled out more widely, though the pilot’s performance in the coming months is likely to shape whether Uber extends it across India or to other regions.
The Department of Energy is looking to cut billions more in federal funding, and many promising startups as well as automakers Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis could be affected by the Trump administration’s decision.
The proposed cuts would cancel more than $500 million of contracts awarded to more than a dozen startups, according to a TechCrunch analysis of an internal document that has not become public yet. All of the proposed cuts are grants that had been awarded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The proposed cancellations, many of which have not been reported before, come on top of more than $7.5 billion in contracts the Trump administration said it would cut last week.
Startups might not be the only losers. Other companies slated to lose grants worth hundreds of millions of dollars include Daimler Trucks North America, Ford, General Motors, Harley-Davidson, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Stellantis, and Volvo Technology of America, according to the document viewed by TechCrunch. Sources confirmed with TechCrunch these are proposed cuts.
General Motors could lose at least $500 million in grant money issued from a federal Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant program. The money was going to be used to retool the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan. The automaker announced in July 2024 it planned to produce electrified vehicles, including hybrids, at the plant.
Some of the awards are significant and, if cut, will undoubtedly affect the startups’ operations. Several were included in a list of proposed cuts that leaked last week, but many are new and have yet to be announced. TechCrunch has reached out to several of the companies and will update this article if they reply.
Two awards on the chopping block topped $100 million, including a $189 million award granted to materials startup Brimstone. Those funds would have helped the company build a plant to produce Portland cement, alumina, and other materials using less carbon dioxide.
The other went to Anovion, a Chicago-based startup that is working to build a factory to produce a domestic supply of synthetic graphite for lithium-ion batteries. Currently, Chinese companies dominate the graphite market.

San Francisco | October 27-29, 2025
Battery materials startup Li Industries received $55.2 million under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to recycle LFP batteries in an attempt to wrest part of that supply chain from China.
Other cement startups are on the list, too. Somerville, Massachusetts-based Sublime Systems was given an award for $86.9 million to build an ultra-low-carbon cement plant. Mountain View-based Furno, which is making a novel, modular cement kiln, would lose its $20 million grant to build a demonstration plant in Chicago.
Several building materials companies were also on the list. CleanFiber and Hempitecture, which make insulation for homes and commercial buildings, are at risk of losing $10 million and $8.4 million, respectively. Skyven Technologies, which makes industrial heat pumps, and Luxwall, which makes super-insulated windows, would lose $15 million and $31 million, respectively.
At least one of the proposed cancelations seemingly cuts against the administration’s goals of energy and AI dominance. TS Conductor, which could lose $28.2 million in grant money, makes advanced conductors for electric lines that promise to double or triple capacity on existing transmission lines. The technology could reduce bottlenecks on the grid and improve data centers’ likelihood of receiving power sooner.
Her plans for a scoop shop changed after a pastry chef friend made machines that make ice cream bars available for sale. Salls Cree found herself attracted to this “new uncharted creative territory.” She turned her attention toward specializing in handmade ice cream bars, ice pops, and other creative cold treats
“I went in thinking I would open a scoop shop that brought the recipes in my book to life and instead I found the door to Pretty Cool,” says Salls Cree.
Halloween presents a unique opportunity for Pretty Cool Ice Cream. Restaurants have embraced Halloween costumes in recent years. Le Bouchon, the beloved Bucktown French restaurant, dressed up as the Olive Garden last year. In 2015, Wieners Circle in Lincoln Park dressed up as McDowell’s, a fictional McDonald’s rip-off featured in the movie Coming to America.
For the holiday, Salls Cree will dress her two pop shops up as scoop shops inspired by her book. On Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27, Salls Cree will fulfill her dream when Pretty Cool’s two locations offer eight flavors of ice cream chosen from recipes in her book. To get into the Halloween spirit, the Pretty Cool employees will be dressing up in Hello My Name Is Ice Cream shirts. Pops will still be available for those two days.
“Every Halloween we rename ourselves something spooky and offer holiday treats, but I always thought it would be cool if the shop itself dressed up in costume,” Salls Cree says. “Well, what does an ice cream shop dress up as? A different ice cream shop.”
While a long time in the making, this isn’t the first time Salls Cree has offered her ice cream for sale. Back when she worked for One Off, she would make a limited series of Hello My Name Is Ice Cream pints and sell them at Publican Quality Meats. The Fulton Market cafe and butcher shop was where a lot of the recipes for her book were developed.
It was also around that time that Salls Cree discovered she had celiac disease, a diagnosis that put her pastry-making career in jeopardy. While she admits she probably always had the disease, it was when she started sharing kitchen space with the company’s bread-making production that her symptoms became intense. “It was the first time I was in the flour cloud that a bread bakery generates and that pushed me over the edge,” she says. There was a silver lining. “It also pushed me into ice cream.”
All the Halloween ice creams are gluten-free as are the cones. Salls Cree and her team sat down with her book to talk about what flavors they wanted to make, focusing on composed scoops — “the real showstoppers,” she says, rather than the single flavor recipes. Once the eight flavors were chosen — mint chocolate chip cookie dough; chocolate peanut butter brownie crunch; gooey butter bake; pumpkin butterscotch pecan; rainbow sherbet; kids play (goat cheese); lemony lemon crème fraiche; and cookies, cookies, and cream — the ingredients were ordered and the team got busy.
The ice cream will be $6 a scoop, and $7 for a split scoop. Anything left over from the 5,000-scoop production will be available for sale in pints at the shops. Salls Cree’s award-winning book will also be available for sale.
“As much I love everything that we make, I miss making scooped ice cream so much,” says Salls Cree. “There’s this whole world of flavors and textures that I developed and have worked with that we don’t get to dabble in because we don’t do scooped ice cream. This is our chance to bring some of that into our repertoire even if it’s just for a short period of time.”
And should there be enough public demand, well, Salls Cree isn’t opposed to the idea of a scoop shop that’s open throughout the year, not just on Halloween.
Pretty Cool Ice Cream Halloween scoop shop pop-up, Saturday, October 26; and Sunday, October 27 at 2353 N. California Avenue in Logan Square and 709 W. Belden Avenue in Lincoln Park.

Wish
Where to watch: Available to stream on Disney Plus
Image: Disney
Genre: Musical fantasy Run time: 1h 35m Directors: Chris Buck, Fawn Veerasunthorn Cast: Chris Pine, Ariana DeBose, Alan Tudyk
This fantasy adventure film created to celebrate the Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary follows Asha (Ariana DeBose), a young girl living in an island kingdom ruled by a powerful sorcerer named Magnifico (Chris Pine). After making a wish one night, Asha befriends a living magical star that falls from the sky and agrees to help her achieve her heart’s greatest desire.
The main problem with Wish is that the filmmakers lean so hard on Disney’s legacy and the nostalgic elements that they fail to actually add much new. Every single detail in Wish is a deliberate reminder of another movie that came before it — usually something better and more unique. That’s particularly true for all the characters, some of whom are literally just walking nods to previous Disney movies. They’re all vague ideas of what a Disney Character™ should be, from snarky talking goat Valentino (voiced by Wreck-It Ralph’s Alan Tudyk) to the heroine herself, without much to make them memorable.
Genre: Horror Run time: 1h 44m Director: William Brent Ball Cast: Ralph Ineson, Tuppence Middleton, Alexa Goodall
The director of the delightfully fun Orphan: First Killis back with another movie, this time starring the inimitable Ralph Ineson (The Witch, The Green Knight). After a minister (Tuppence Middleton) moves to a village in the English countryside, her daughter goes missing ahead of the annual harvest festival. I have a feeling those villagers are up to something sinister!
Genre: Historical drama Run time: 1h 46m Director: Jonathan Glazer Cast: Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller, Johann Karthaus
Based on the novel by Martin Amis, Jonathan Glazer’s latest film follows the story of Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp who chose to build his family home just outside the camp’s walls.
The Zone of Interest may be the most powerful movie about complicity that’s ever been made, particularly about the Holocaust. The movie’s true warning isn’t that regular life can go on even amid atrocity, it’s that people are capable of pretending that atrocity isn’t happening. Glazer seems to suggest that people aren’t unaware of destructive historical events going on around them, but rather that they actively close their ears to it. The Höss family doesn’t drown out the camp, or begrudgingly ignore the roar of its furnaces or the gunshots from over the wall. They just keep going like it isn’t there at all. The effect of all their silence is one of the loudest and most unique views a film has ever taken on one of history’s most horrific atrocities.
Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar
Where to watch: Available to stream on Max on April 6
Image: Warner Bros. Discovery/Adult Swim
Genre: Apocalyptic musical comedy Run time: 1h 23m Director: Brendon Small Cast: Brendon Small, Tommy Blacha, Malcolm McDowell
Metalocalypse creator Brendon Small returns with a feature-length finale to his satirical Adult Swim original series. With the evil Tribunal preparing to instigate the Metalocalypse, the members of Dethklok must work together to compose the song of salvation and save the day.
“Epic” as a descriptor is thrown around too often as a hyperbolic compliment, but Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar rightfully warrants that description and then some. It’s a fitting final chapter in the long and outrageous saga of one of Adult Swim’s most surprising cult classics, and a rapturous encore dedicated to a passionate fan base who refused to let the series go quietly. The Metalocalypse may be over, but the music never dies.

Talk to Me
Where to watch: Available to stream on Paramount Plus w/ Showtime
Image: A24
Genre: Supernatural horror Run time: 1h 35m Directors: Danny Philippou, Michael Philippou Cast: Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird
Talk to Me follows a group of Australian teenagers who discover how to conjure the spirits of the dead using an embalmed hand. Naturally, they start filming themselves messing around with it, but when one of them holds on to the hand for too long in order to communicate with a lost loved one, they open a door to a world of horrors. Praised as one of the scariest movies of 2023, Talk to Me is the directorial debut of YouTubers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou and already has a sequel in production.
Wyatt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) stars in this supernatural horror film as a professional baseball player who, after being forced into retirement, moves into a luxurious new home with his wife and children. When a malevolent force emerges from the waters of the house’s backyard pool, the family is forced to face a horror beyond their deepest fears.
All the strengths of its family story aside, it’s probably fair to want a little more horror out of a movie about a killer swimming pool. There are a few fun bits of pool horror in Night Swim, like seeing another world behind the flap of the skimmer or the spring of an empty diving board playing like a warning sign to run. Outside of its opening scene, though, Night Swim isn’t the scariest movie about hungry spirits and ancient gods. But hey, it’s January. Horror fans will take what we can get. Sometimes that just means a few good scares in an otherwise fascinating family movie about magic pools and baseball — which is more than enough to make Night Swim a worthy addition to the list of interesting, watchable January horror.

Girls State
Where to watch: Available to stream on Apple TV Plus

Genre: Documentary Run time: 1h 35m Director: Jesse Moss

How to Have Sex
Where to watch: Available to stream on Mubi
Image: Mubi
Genre: Coming-of-age drama Run time: 1h 31m Director: Molly Manning Walker Cast: Mia McKenna-Bruce, Lara Peake, Samuel Bottomley
One of the best movies of 2024 so far, How to Have Sex isn’t quite what its title suggests. Rather than a rowdy teen comedy, it’s a tender coming-of-age story. As Oli Welsh puts it in his write-up in our list of the best 2024 movies, “It’s a quietly devastating movie about bad formative experiences, but also beautiful in its empathy and kindness, and funny, too.”
New to rent
Baby Assassins 2
Where to watch: Available to rent on YouTube, Apple, and Vudu
Image: Well Go USA Entertainment
Genre: Action comedy Run time: 1h 41m Director: Yugo Sakamoto Cast: Akari Takaishi, Saori Izawa, Oto Abe
The sequel to one of 2022’s most delightful movies, Baby Assassins 2 sees the two teenage assassin protagonists return with a new problem: They’re overdue on their gym payments, and there are two contractors gunning for their jobs and their lives.
That action is designed by Kensuke Sonomura, one of the best action directors and fight choreographers working today. He also happens to have a long history designing action for video games, like Devil May Cry 4, Vanquish, 2020’s Resident Evil 3, and multiple Metal Gear Solid games. His style of choreography nimbly shifts to meet the needs of each project, but it always excels in its fluidity of motion, use of environments, and legibility of action. You will never be lost watching a Kensuke Sonomura fight scene.
The American Society of Magical Negroes

Austin loves dogs! Over 250,000 dogs live in the city. On average, dogs produce half a pound of waste a day. It adds up quickly: over 150,000 pounds daily, 54,750,000 pounds a year! Yuck!
Central Wellington’s ageing parking meter system is being updated with new technology, with the new meters installed and going live next week.
There are 400 new Pay by Plate machines in central Wellington, Kelburn and by the Botanic Gardens ki Paekākā; 260 are card-only and 140 are cash and card machines. The new parking system will be live from Wednesday 3 January.
Pay by Plate is a paperless system that uses the vehicle plate number, rather than a numbered car park, to record the parking time and payment.
Parking prices will stay the same, from $3 – $5 per hour on weekdays depending on the location, and $3 per hour on weekends.
So what do you need to know to be ready for the switch?
Tips for smooth parking with Pay by Plate:
· There are two types of new meter – all meters accept PayWave and a third of them also take coins.
· Coin/card meters are the black and yellow rectangular meters that sit on the ground, the card-only meters are on a pole.
· Take a note of your Parking Area, which is on the side of the meter, eg W01. You can ignore the old kerbside numbers – these will be removed in the new year.
· Your active parking session can be used in any parking space until it expires, so long as the vehicle plate number and parking area are the same. If you park in another parking area which has a different ‘W’ (Wellington) number, you’ll need…
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Tuesday appointed Carolyn Webb de Macias as chief of staff, succeeding Chris Thompson, who held the powerful post for less than a year.
Webb de Macias is a former senior advisor to former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and also worked for then-City Councilmember Mark Ridley-Thomas.
She also worked in the U.S. Department of Education as an appointee of President Obama, and as USC’s vice president of external relations, according to Bass’ office.
“I’ve known Carolyn for years and I know Los Angeles has benefited from her work for even longer than that,” Bass said in a statement. “Carolyn is thoughtful, skilled, dedicated and the right person for the job. I’m grateful she has agreed to join our team as we continue our work to move Los Angeles forward.”

In a statement, Webb de Macias said she was “thrilled to work with Mayor Bass in executing her vision of improving the quality of life for all Angelenos.”
Webb de Macias, 75, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Her LinkedIn profile said she serves on the boards of the water company Cadiz Inc. and Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, a nonprofit founded by Villaraigosa.
Thompson, Bass’ chief of staff since December, is returning to the private sector, Bass’ office said. A Bass spokesman declined to comment on his new job.
Thompson previously served as senior vice president of governmental relations for LA28, the private group putting on the Olympic Games. He had agreed to stay away from any Olympics issues at the city for a year out of concern about the appearance of a conflict of interest.
Gisborne’s central business district (CBD) is the focus of a huge line-up of fun Christmas activities this year.
A Kiwiana Christmas workshop at the HB Williams Memorial Library will be Christmas central for everyone in town.
There’ll be visits from Santa, music, a photo booth, workshops for children, and a present-wrapping HQ at the library throughout the month of December.
There’s also a new party in town with The Christmas Street Festival being held at the Grey Street Skate Park on Sunday 10 December from 12noon to 6pm.
That event is being organised by the Tairāwhiti Adventure Trust (TAT).
In the line-up for Sunday’s event are food trucks, craft stalls, and a parade float stall where the winner will be decided by public vote. This year’s theme is Beach Days.
Santa will be there from 2pm and if you have a Christmas-patterned jersey, dust it off because there’ll be a worst-Christmas-jersey competition.
There’ll be heaps for tamariki with a twinkle light tunnel, face painting, games, carols, and a fashion parade along a candy cane runway.
“We’re excited to move the annual celebration of Christmas to a different platform this year,“ says Gisborne District Council Chief Executive Nedine Thatcher Swann.
“All the key components of our traditional Christmas parade will be there including floats and Santa with heaps of extras for a festive…
Hansal Mehta is an Indian director who is credited for making films like Dus Kahaniyaan, Shahid, CityLights, and many more. Even though he has made several stories a reality for the big screen, the filmmaker has been successful in keeping his life story hidden. But recently in an interview, Hansal Mehta opened up about going through a tough phase in his life and how his second wife Safeena Husain helped him get out of it.
Hansal Mehta shared about his drinking problem
In an interview with Unfiltered by Samdish, Mehta shared about the time when he turned to drinking in his early 30s. He said, “When I was between 25-30, especially, when I made Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar (2000), which was when I was 31 or 32, there was a phase after that for around 6-7 years, when I felt the oldest. Nothing good was going on. Things were going bad, things were going wrong. My films were not doing well; I had made some bad films.”
The Aligarh director further added, “In terms of personal life, I had gone for separation. A lot of things happened at the same time. The kids were there, and I did not know how to fulfill my responsibilities. And I had also taken to alcohol. So, all these things together had become a big, vicious thing. I was drinking a lot, very unhealthy.”
Hansal Mehta says his wife Safeena Husain brought stability to his life
During the conversation, the filmmaker was asked how did her get past that tough time. Crediting his now-wife Safeena, the Scoop director said that after meeting her, he found a little bit of stability in terms of relationship. Mehta divulged, “So that sort of helped slowly, slowly. It took time. I mean it was bumpy with her too in the beginning because she said, ‘Kitna peete ho tum (How much do you drink)?’ She pointed it out and it became a thing that I had to work on. I was not an alcoholic but I used to. I still enjoy it. But now I know that I should drink enough so that I can work the next day. My focus has changed now. I like my work now, since Shahid,” he shared.
We all do it. But we all go about keeping it sanitary in different ways. Humans use flushing toilets, cats keep it classy and bury it or use a litter box. And dogs? Well. Dogs need their mamas and dads to help them out. That’s right. We’re talking about poop.
When it comes to keeping our environment clean and healthy, dog “paw”rents have a responsibility to do a simple act: scoop the poop.
It isn’t glamorous and certainly isn’t fun. But it takes just a few seconds to pick up your dog’s poo and is so important to keeping our environment safe. Dog doo doo is not the same as cow manure, as many may think. It doesn’t offer healthy growth to the grass and in fact, can be pretty damaging. Beyond damaging the grass, letting dog poop sit means that bacteria is seeping into our waterways, causing illness like giardia!
Sure, it’s smelly to deal with and sometimes the consistency can be pretty gross to handle, but we’d rather have a clean environment and healthy waters, so scooping the poop is a small price to pay!
We can #scoopthepoop a few different ways:
The hand-in-bag method: open poop bag, place hand inside, using it like a glove. Pick up that poop without actually coming in contact, then turn the bag inside out as you pull your hand out, safely containing the poop! Find a trash can to throw the bag away — you’re done!
Pooper Scooper device: maybe it’s a shovel, maybe it’s a fancy contraption designed specifically for this chore — whatever you use to get the job done!
Thousands of dogs call Austin home — we wouldn’t be one of the best cities in the nation without them, so let’s make sure that we keep our community sparkling by doing the dirty job of scooping the poop!
If you’re using Scoop for work, your organisation needs to pay a small license fee with Scoop Pro. We think that’s fair, because your organisation is benefiting from using our news resources. In return, we’ll also give your team access to pro news tools and keep Scoop free for personal use, because public access to news is important!

They were then threatened with what were described as pistols, and had personal items taken from them.
The victims were unharmed, but understandably shaken by the incident.
The alleged offenders left in a vehicle, which was stopped by Police a short time later and two men were arrested.
The third offender carried on and then abandoned the vehicle not far from the scene, and was located by Police soon after.
All of the victims’ property has been recovered and they are being provided with ongoing support.
Two airsoft air pistols were also located.
Three men, two aged 19 and one aged 22, will appear in Auckland District Court tomorrow on a number of charges including aggravated robbery, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and firearms-related offences.
Police are pleased to have been able to make quick arrests in this matter, and hope they bring about reassurance to the victims and the wider community.
As the matter is now before the courts, Police cannot comment further.

Market snapshots: CBD revitalisation offers encouragement for Auckland retail rebound while prime office and industrial sectors remain in strong demand across all three major centres
Auckland has seen a positive rebound in retail occupancy according to JLL’s latest commercial property snapshots, released today.
JLL NZ’s Head of Research, Gavin Read, says that despite an additional 3210sqm of space becoming available, retail vacancy in Auckland’s CBD actually decreased in the last quarter of 2022 to 8.2%, with space around the city’s future rail stations in particularly high demand.
“With the recent pedestrianisation of Queen Street, workers returning to the office and the restart of tourism, we’ve already seen retail vacancy rates steadily decrease. Added to this we now see many retailers eyeing up opportunities ahead of the scheduled completion of the City Rail Link in 2024.”
Office vacancy in Auckland’s CBD is also down. While overall vacancy sits at 10.8%, the ‘flight to quality’ trend of companies seeking quality locations and amenities to attract and retain staff has widened the gap between premium and secondary space vacancies, now sitting respectively at 5.4 and 16.3%.
“We are also seeing evidence that the flight to quality trend is extending out to more suburban areas like the North Shore and South Auckland too,” says Read.
