The Final Session Of idobi’s Summer School Tour Hits Anaheim!

    [ad_1]

We had the greatest pleasure of attending the final night of idobi’s Summer School tour in Anaheim at City National Grove of Anaheim. With a stacked lineup, consisting of artists like The Home Team, Honey Revenge, Scene Queen: there was no way we could complain about having to go to Summer School. Want to see what all went down at the tour of the summer? Stick around to see which artists we got photos of!

    Noelle Sucks

One of our newest pop punk girlies kicked off the show with an insane powerhouse voice that we wanted to continue to listen to over and over again. Noelle Sucks didn’t just have a phenomenal voice, she had a stage presence that woo’ed the crowd and kept us hooked from the very first song. 10/10 would recommend listening to her song ‘Crumbs‘ which was just ONE of our favorite songs from her set!

    Letdown.

We’ve spoken about Letdown. on The Honey POP before and seeing him live only made us that much more of a fan! Singing songs of their debut album, Crying in the Shower, this band had us jumping in our spot for the duration of their set. Even with a heart-wrenching song like ‘Crying in the Shower,’ we were singing and dancing along. We love a good upbeat sad song. Why lie! Also, honorable mention to the show his hair was giving. The long luscious curls had us stunned!

    Honey Revenge

Next up we had a veteran band that we LIVE FOR at The Honey POP — our dearest, Honey Revenge! Our fellow bee lovers! Opening up their set with their newest single, ‘Recipe for Disaster,’ Donny and Devin kept the energy up! Just straight up banger after banger. Some could say we were thoroughly impressed…….. Get it? They closed out their set with their most streamed song to date, ‘Airhead‘ and we couldn’t have asked for a better closing song. Devin joined us in the crowd and gave it her ALL, stating she was most excited to be playing a hometown show. We love to see it!

    The Home Team

We are HUUUUGE fans of this Seattle-based heavy pop band and when we saw their name on the Summer School lineup, it just made our entire year. With the recent release of their new album, The Crucible of Life, we didn’t know what to expect from their setlist. And of course, we weren’t even slightly disappointed. Let’s start off with the band’s crew, and some of the members from the other bands on tour, coming out with these insanely large cut outs of all the boys’ faces PLUS someone in an inflatable elephant suit AND someone in this massive rat costume– we were sitting there with our jaws on the ground from the excitement of all the chaos. In the rat costume was none other than lead singer Brian Butcher who was just so full of excitement and happiness as they opened with ‘Brag.’ Ryne and John have so much energy, we literally cannot fathom how they keep it up for a 45-minute set! We didn’t want their set to end but we knew there was so much more coming at this show!

    Magnolia Park

Next up we had a band with a much heavier than the rest of the ones we’d seen so far. Magnolia Park put on a show for the AGES! Opening up with ‘Misfits‘ was the way to go; It set up the tone for the rest of their set. One of our favorite songs from their set was ‘Unholy Heart’ which is a Magnolia Park and Honey Revenge collab! Devin joined the boys on stage and that was just the start of the unexpected collabs we would see throughout the rest of the night. We were 5 bands in, 2 more to go, and we were over the moon with excitement for what the rest of the night might bring.

    Scene Queen

Next up, we had the queen herself! Wearing the cutest pink floral fit, Scene Queen gave us a phenomenal show. The silly banter, the stage aesthetics, the stacked setlist! We were truly honored to be in her presence. ‘Barbie & Ken‘ was the highlight of her set simply because she brought out her boyfriend, Joey Fleming, to sing it along with her. The chemistry the two had was undeniable! Finish off her set with her most streamed song, ‘Pink Rover,’ we were more than satisfied with her performance.

    Stand Atlantic

Last, and certainly not least, our reigning faves from Sydney, Australia! Stand Atlantic opened with undoubtedly their best song, ‘WARZ0NE‘ and the crowd went wild. Bonnie has these vocals that immediately take you in and you have no other option than to bang your head and sing along. Only two songs in, majority of the members from the other bands on the tour joined StAt on stage to do a shoey. You know, just casual Aussie things. And during their song ‘GIRL$‘ they had all the female musicians and crew members join them on stage to give them the recognition they deserve! During ‘Lavender Bones,’ another group of other band members and crew decided to have a little yoga stretch while Bonnie and the crowd sang their lungs out. The chaos only ensured we were going to leave the show filled with so much serotonin. They closed out their set with ‘deathwish’ off their second most recent album, with Joshua Roberts from Magnolia Park joining them on stage to do the little rap verse.

Scene Queen and the Evolution of Bimbocore

Interview and Photo by Jordan Edwards

It’s become cliché to call an artist genre-less, but there’s no other way to describe Scene Queen. A sugary sweet hook can quickly shift to heavy metal guitars or a thick hip-hop beat.

Her latest single is a collaboration with 6arelyhuman that shows yet another side. “Stuck” is a dance song with a pulsing beat, Y2K energy, and hyperpop vocals. It’s yet another element she can add to her unpredictable live shows. The singer-songwriter is known for commanding the stage at festivals and converting new fans.

Scene Queen describes this anything-can-happen approach as Bimbocore (also the name of her 2022 EP). Lyrically, she walks the line of humor and social commentary. It’s less of a musical style and more of a philosophy.

We talked to her in Los Angeles about how she got this point and where her music is going.

Your new single “Stuck” features 6arelyhuman. How did you two link up?
We met up in October before my US headliner because I had just sent out an offer to support on the tour, and was so stoked that they agreed and figured we should meet up in person. Turns out our styles blended together really well.

How did you make the song? Did you get to collaborate together in person?
We met up with my usual producer Zach Jones and my other producer friend/songwriter Inverness in LA, and wrote the track and bounced a rough that day. Then 6arleyhuman went home to Texas and sent us back an edited version of their part and smashed it, so that ended up being the final version.

Could you see yourself making more EDM tracks?
I pride myself in doing music from all styles that feel simultaneously nostalgic and fresh, so there really isn’t something off the table for me at this point, especially given I went full country for my song “MILF.”

You have a new record on the way. Is there a theme? What does the album mean to you?
I wrote the album about finding my sexuality and reclaiming my power as Scene Queen. So it’s a lot of tales about being young and single, and also a lot of anger towards the hardships that came during that time.

The way your songs shift tempo and mood is really unique. How long did it take you to find that mashup style?
I honestly just never go into the studio with the intention of making a specific style. I just write a bunch of crazy lyrics ahead of time. Then once I say them out loud in the room, my producer and I work together to make the general vibe and build it from there. I also pride myself on keeping everything on the table and not being afraid to take risks—subject matter or genre wise.

“MILF” is wild. Where did you get the idea to make a metal country song?
I honestly just wanted to prove I could make any style bimbocore if I tried, and I was listening to a lot of country at the time, because I spent the entire summer back and fourth from LA to Nashville.

The guitars in your music can be pretty brutal. Is there a metal band or bands that influenced that?
I think I listened to a lot of early metal and post hardcore bands from the 2000s and 2010s that in general influenced my style, but guitar-wise, since I change the vibe so much, it’s hard to pinpoint. The guitars can be influenced by anything from Emmure or Architects sounding to Rage Against The Machine to even pop-punk bands.

It feels like the presence and influence of women in rock is increasing. Do you feel the tide turning?
I feel like there’s a huge shift because women are liberating themselves within music. I feel like it’s so typical for bands to half-heartedly slap a woman as the first of four people on a tour in the smallest print possible and act like they’re changing the scene. I think what makes me the most excited is seeing how many female friends and peers of mine (myself included) just outright refuse to do tours without other women.

Have you always been into pink? Where did the Scene Queen aesthetic come from?
My entire life, my bedroom has always been pink, and pink has always been my favorite color. But when I was younger, I actively chose to wear all black to shows in order to fit in. Once I became an adult, I realized femininity holds so much power, and wanted to present as hyper-femme as possible. For me, that manifests in so much pink. And once I started being all pink, I couldn’t stop. I don’t leave the house unless I’m in it.

You’re known for your high energy live shows. Do you have a favorite venue or festival?
I honestly love playing festivals because I get to play to massive crowds filled with people who love my music, but also people that I can shock or win over with what I do, which is so fun for me. But also I pride myself on making my headlines a super unique and interactive experience, so that’s honestly where I thrive the most. Because I just love chatting with people and making jokes.
