Sean “Diddy” Combs was indicted on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering on Tuesday, September 17, one day after his arrest in New York.

A 14-page indictment, unsealed on Tuesday, details a barrage of accusations against the rapper. Diddy “abused, threatened and coerced women and others around him,” the indictment states. Some of the alleged incidents, which the indictment claimed were carried out to fulfill “his sexual desires, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct,” date back to 2009.

Diddy “engaged in a persistent and pervasive pattern of abuse toward women and other individuals,” the indictment continues. “This abuse was, at times, verbal, emotional, physical and sexual.”

The document also noted that he allegedly “manipulated women” to “participate in highly orchestrated performances,” which are detailed elsewhere in the indictment.

Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, confirmed Diddy’s arrest via social media on Monday. The music mogul’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, also spoke out about the arrest in a statement to Us.

“We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Agnifilo said. “Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man and proven philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, adoring his children and working to uplift the Black community.”

He concluded: “He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. To his credit Mr. Combs has been nothing but cooperative with this investigation and he voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve your judgment until you have all the facts. These are the acts of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court.”

    1. The ‘Freak Offs’

Diddy would orchestrate what were called “Freak Offs,” according to the indictment. These were “elaborate and produced sex performances,” often taking place in hotel rooms, which were arranged and directed by Diddy, who allegedly “masturbated during, and often electronically recorded” them.

The music mogul and his business associates would allegedly “lure female victims” into his inner circle “often under the pretense of a romantic relationship.” He would then use “force, threats of force and coercion to cause victims to engage in extended sex acts with male commercial sex workers.”

During these “Freak Offs,” Diddy allegedly “distributed a variety of controlled substances to victims” to keep them “obedient and compliant” during sex acts. Both Diddy and the alleged victims “received IV fluids to recover from the physical exertion and drug use” after the acts.

    2. What Was Found During the Homeland Security Raid

Evidence of the “Freak Offs” was allegedly discovered in Diddy’s Miami and Beverly Hills residences, which were raided this past March in connection with a federal sex trafficking investigation.

“Law enforcement seized various ‘Freak Off’ supplies, including narcotics and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant,” the indictment read. Elsewhere in the documents, it was revealed that Homeland Security “seized firearms and ammunition, including three AR-15s with defaced serial numbers, as well as a drum magazine.”

    3. Arson

Diddy was accused of “arson” several times throughout the indictment. While further details about the alleged crime were not detailed, the document claimed there were “multiple acts” of arson, which are all chargeable under the California Penal Code.

    4. The Cassie Video

In May, a video of Diddy assaulting ex-girlfriend Cassie at a hotel in 2016 was released publicly. The music mogul allegedly “attempted to bribe the staff member to ensure silence” after the incident once a hotel employee stepped in, according to the indictment.

Cassie — who dated Diddy on and off from 2007 to 2018 — accused him of abuse in a November 2023 lawsuit, which was settled one day later. Diddy denied her allegations.

    5. Employees of Combs Enterprise Were Allegedly Involved

“Members and associates of the Combs Enterprise engaged in, and attempted to engage in, among other activities, sex trafficking, forced labor, interstate transportation for purposes of prostitution, coercion and enticement to engage in prostitution, narcotics offenses, kidnapping, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice,” the indictment reads. The “enterprise” referred to the organization’s “leadership, its members and its associates.”

Diddy Indicted on Federal Sex-Trafficking and Racketeering Charges

Nearly a year after an incendiary, and quickly settled, lawsuit brought scrutiny to Sean “Diddy” Combs’s personal life, the hip-hop mogul has been indicted on federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges in New York. According to his legal team, Combs voluntarily relocated to the Park Hyatt hotel in Manhattan ahead of his arrest on Monday evening.

“We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Combs’s attorney Marc Agnifilo said in a statement, describing his client as “a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man, and proven philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, adoring his children, and working to uplift the Black community.”

“He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal,” the statement continued. “To his credit Mr. Combs has been nothing but cooperative with this investigation and he voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve your judgment until you have all the facts. These are the acts of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court.”

The charges follow a series of legal battles surrounding Combs. In November, his former girlfriend Casandra Ventura, who performs as Cassie and had been signed to Combs’s record label, accused him of years of sexual and physical abuse. The suit was settled in just a day, but its contents set out a disturbing portrait that instantly reframed the playboy persona that Combs had cultivated for decades.

In the months to come, Combs faced an additional eight lawsuits involving sexual misconduct, five of which included an allegation of sexual assault. He is fighting all of these suits and has denied any wrongdoing in connection with them. In March, federal agents raided his homes in Los Angeles and Miami, and while authorities noted few details at that time, the televised spectacle set off widespread discussion of potential criminal charges. His arrest marks the most dire legal threat he has faced to date, and further cements the sharp turn he has taken from world-beating impresario to punchline.

Still, Combs has seemed somewhat pointed in his efforts to appear unfazed, posing for photos at a Miami cafe only a few days after the raids of his homes. As the summer began, TMZ photographed him white-water rafting in Jackson Hole. In the lead-up to his arrest, the only public sign of contrition he offered came when video evidence of his abuse emerged. After CNN published hotel surveillance video from 2016 showing Combs dragging and kicking Ventura, he posted an apology video on Instagram.

“I was disgusted then when I did it,” Combs said. “I’m disgusted now.”

    This is a developing story.

Rose Hanbury might be a main character in a dominant conspiracy surrounding British royals — and this time it’s not rooted in infidelity rumors.

Hanbury, 40, has been making headlines for her connection to Prince William as questions about Princess Kate Middleton’s whereabouts continue to rise, but now, some of her home furnishings seem to be in question.

Internet sleuths have unearthed various photo shoots of Hanbury and her husband, David Cholmondeley, 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, posing in various rooms of their Norfolk, England home, Houghton Hall. The images — mainly from a May 2013 Vanity Fair profile and May 2023 Financial Times piece show the couple posing alongside what appear to be various oriental décor pieces that were allegedly looted from China during the Qing dynasty.

“So, due to the #KateGate / #WhereIsKate missing Kate Middleton / Princess of Wales #Katespiracy drama, lots of people around the world have increased interest in Rose Hanbury and her mysterious connection to Prince William,” one X user wrote earlier this week, sharing the photos of Hanbury and her husband. “Unfortunately, people in China looked a little too closely at this photoshoot of the Marquis and Marchioness of Cholmondeley in their gorgeous stately home, and noticed that it’s full of authentic Chinese furniture and artefacts [sic] that were stolen from China during the fall of the Qing dynasty, and they are pissed.”

The message continued: “Apparently, the Marquis of Cholmondeley inherited these controversial pieces from his Sassoon side of the family, and the Sassoons got them by pillaging Qing China while they were there trading opium,” the same X thread read. “Now, Chinese netizens noticed them in the background of their photoshoot at Houghton Hall.”

The Sassoon family reportedly ran a trading empire in the 19th century, dealing commodities across various nations, including China. It’s unclear how the Sassons family — and now Marquis and Marchioness of Cholmondeley — obtained the items in question. However, Sybil Sassoon is Cholmondeley’s paternal grandmother, so it seems there might be a connection.

Former BuzzFeed royal reporter Ellie Hall even weighed in on the new controversy, referring to it as a “favorite unanticipated side-plots” of the ongoing royal family drama.

Hanbury’s connection to the royal family actually dates back years. In fact, she attended Kate and William’s 2011 wedding. Eight years later, affair rumors between Hanbury and William started swirling. (In 2019, multiple outlets reported that Kate and Hanbury had a falling out over the alleged infidelity.)

Royal watchers brought up the affair rumors more recently when Kate’s whereabouts came into question after she underwent an abdominal surgery in January. Social media users went rogue with theories about the Princess of Wales’ well-being, with some claiming that William and Hanbury’s affair being the reason she hasn’t stepped out of the public eye.

Jonathan Majors and Meagan Good made their red carpet debut nearly four months after he was found guilty of domestic assault.

The couple were all smiles as they attended the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Special Achievement Honorees Luncheon on Sunday, March 3. Majors, 34, donned a black hat and gray trench coat as he posed alongside Good, 42.

The actress opted for a yellow dress complete with cutout that showed off her toned stomach. The couple smiled and looked lovingly at each other while cameras flashed.

Sunday’s outing marked the first time that Good and Majors have walked a red carpet together since kicking off their romance in May 2023. This was hardly their first public appearance, however. Good was photographed by Majors’ side throughout his domestic abuse trial and subsequent conviction.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office later allowed evidence to go public, including text messages sent from Majors to Jabbari in September 2022 in which he threatened suicide. A second string of messages showed Majors seemingly dissuading Jabbari to seek medical treatment after she suffered a head injury.

“I fear you have no perspective of what could happen if you go to the hospital,” the messages read. “They will ask you questions and as I don’t think you actually protect us it could lead to an investigation even if you do lie and they suspect something.”

  • The Narcissistic Culture of “Image” and Excessive Self-Monitoring

The Narcissistic Culture of “Image” and Excessive Self-Monitoring

In a world obsessed with public image and attention-seeking, learn about the cultural forces propelling society to become more narcissistic – and how this influences us to be in a constant state of self-scrutiny.

The idea that our culture is becoming more narcissistic and self-centered is not new.

Historian and social critic Christopher Lasch’s book The Culture of Narcissism was first published in 1979. By that time, the 1970s were already dubbed the “Me-generation.” Americans were increasingly shifting focus to concepts like “self-liberation,” “self-expression,” and “self-actualization,” while untethering themselves from past traditions and social responsibilities.

Interestingly, Lasch traces the narcissistic roots in America back way further, starting with the early days of the Protestant work ethic and its singular focus on labor, money, and wealth-building, including the old “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mantra.

This early thread of American hyper-individualism continues into the New Age movement at the turn of the 20th century with its focus on personal happiness and spiritual fulfillment, as well as the popularity of Ayn Rand’s “virtue of selfishness,” and the rise of celebrity-worship and fame-seeking that still characterizes much of American life today whether it be in politics, sports, art, or entertainment.

Things appear to be getting worse. The book was written over 40 years ago, but a lot of the observations in it seem strangely prophetic when looking at the world today. Lasch accurately describes how narcissistic trends have evolved on a societal and cultural level, and you can perfectly extend his theories to explain our modern culture.

Before you continue reading, remember this is a cultural analysis of narcissistic tendencies and it isn’t focused on clinical or psychological definitions of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

Many people act more narcissistic because that’s what our society rewards and that’s how people think they need to act to get ahead in today’s world.

One can even look at certain narcissistic tendencies as a survival strategy in an otherwise competitive, atomized, isolated – “every man for himself” – world.

Now let’s dive into how our modern culture amplifies and rewards narcissism.

    The narcissist craves an audience

First, the most defining characteristic of a narcissist is that they depend on the attention and validation of others to feel good about themselves.

Contrary to the popular myth that the narcissist suffers from excessive self-love, the truth is they are deeply insecure and lack true confidence and self-esteem. The main reason they brag, show off, or puff-up-their-chests is only to appear strong when deep down they feel weak.

As a result the narcissist is obsessed with their image and appearance. They feel they need to “win people over” to be accepted and liked by others, and this requires a carefully manufactured persona they create for the public.

This deeply rooted “need for attention” plays a central theme in Lasch’s analysis:

“Narcissism represents a psychological dimension of dependence. Notwithstanding his occasional illusions of omnipotence, the narcissist depends on others to validate his self-esteem. He cannot live without an admiring audience. His apparent freedom from family ties and institutional constraints does not free him to stand alone or to glory in his individuality. On the contrary, it contributes to his insecurity, which he can overcome only by seeing his ‘grandiose self’ reflected in the attention of others, or by attaching himself to those who radiate celebrity, power, and charisma.”

Without an audience to appreciate them, the narcissist struggles to find their self-worth. They don’t believe in themselves – they need “proof” they are a good or important person through the eyes of others.

To the narcissist, any attention is better than none at all; even negative attention like gossip, drama, and criticism feeds into their egos by letting them know they are still front and center.

In a society that rewards attention for the sake of attention (including fame and notoriety), the narcissist grows and thrives. Who knows, that next scandal with a famous celebrity may be their big breakthrough – whatever gets them into the limelight!

Image-centrism: The society of the spectacle

One major contributor to the rise of narcissistic tendencies is that our culture is becoming more image-centric.

Popular ideas on what true “happiness,” “success,” “fame,” “beauty,” and “achievement” look like are based on outward images and appearances increasingly fed into our culture through photographs, movies, television, and advertising:

“[One] influence is the mechanical reproduction of culture, the proliferation of visual and audial images in the ‘society of the spectacle.’ We live in a swirl of images and echoes that arrest experience and play it back in slow motion. Cameras and recording machines not only transcribe experience but alter its quality, giving to much of modern life the character of an enormous echo chamber, a hall of mirrors. Life presents itself as a succession of images or electronic signals, of impressions recorded and reproduced by means of photography, motion pictures, television, and sophisticated recording devices.”

This book was written before the internet and social media which have only increased our “image-centrism” tenfold. Selfies, avatars, memes, filters, photoshop, and AI have all continued to add more layers to this hyper-reality between manipulated images and how we choose to present ourselves.

This constant barrage of cultural images shapes our beliefs and map of reality. It subconsciously puts ideas in our heads about what “happiness,” “success,” and “beauty” are supposed to look like.

Once these social images are set in our minds, we naturally feel the desire to live up to them.

Narcissists can often be the most sensitive to these social images because they fear their true self isn’t good enough, so they take society’s picture of “success” and try to mirror that image back to others.

On the surface, the narcissist is a crowd-pleaser. They don’t trust their own judgement, so if society says this is what “happiness” or “success” looks like, then they will try to mimic it the best they can.

    Everyone has an audience now

Technology, internet, social media, cameras, and recording devices have created a world where everyone feels like they have an audience all-the-time.

Family photo albums and home videos were early stages in turning “private moments” into “public consumption,” but now we have people over-sharing every meal, date, and shopping spree on their social media feeds.

Lasch correctly identifies this trend back in the 1960s-70s, including a mention of the popular show Candid Camera, which was one of the first “hidden camera” TV shows:

“Modern life is so thoroughly mediated by electronic images that we cannot help responding to others as if their actions – and our own – were being recorded and simultaneously transmitted to an unseen audience or stored up for close scrutiny at some later time. ‘Smile you’re on candid camera!’ The intrusion into everyday life of this all-seeing eye no longer takes us by surprise or catches us with our defenses down. We need no reminder to smile, a smile is permanently graven on our features, and we already know from which of several angles it photographs to best advantage.”

Life is recorded and shared now more than ever before. Today everyone has an audience and many people can’t help but see themselves as the “main character” of their own carefully edited movie.

Unfortunately, we have this audience whether we like it or not. Every time we are out in public, someone may whip out their phones, capture an embarrassing moment, and upload it to the internet for millions to watch. You never know when you may go “viral” for the wrong reasons. The rise of online shaming, doxing, and harassment puts people in a perpetual state of high alert.

That’s a stressful thought, but it perfectly represents this state of hyper-surveillance we are all in, where there’s always a potential audience and you feel constant pressure to showcase the “best version of yourself” in every waking moment, because you never know who is watching.

    Self-image and excessive self-monitoring

In a world that rewards people solely based on the “image” they present, we naturally become more self-conscious of the image we are projecting to others.

This leads to a state of endless self-monitoring and self-surveillance. We see ourselves through the eyes of others and try to fit their image of what we are supposed to be. No matter what we choose to do with our lives, the most pressing questions become, “How will this make me look?” or “What will people think of me?”

While people naturally want to present themselves in the best way possible and form strong first impressions, an excessive degree of self-filtering and self-management can cause us to lose our sense of identity for the sake of superficial acceptance, internet fame, or corporate climbing.

At worst, we increasingly depend on this these manufactured images to understand ourselves and reality:

“The proliferation of recorded images undermines our sense of reality. As Susan Sontag observes in her study of photography, ‘Reality has come to seem more and more like what we are shown by cameras.’ We distrust our perceptions until the camera verifies them. Photographic images provide us with the proof of our existence, without which we would find it difficult even to reconstruct a personal history…

Among the ‘many narcissistic uses’ that Sontag attributes to the camera, ‘’self-surveillance’ ranks among the most important, not only because it provides the technical means of ceaseless self-scrutiny but because it renders the sense of selfhood dependent on the consumption of images of the self, at the same time calling into question the reality of the external world.”

If you didn’t share your meal on social media, did you really eat it? If you didn’t update your relationship status online, are you really dating someone?

For many people, the internet world has become “more real” than the real world. People don’t go out and do adventurous things to live their lives, but to “create content” for their following.

Who looks like their living their best life? Who is experiencing the most FOMO on the internet? In a narcissistic world, we start seeing our “digital self” in competition with everyone else – and the only thing that matters is that it looks like we are having a good time.

More and more, we consume and understand ourselves through these technologies and images. We depend on photo galleries, reel clips, and social media posts to chronicle our life story and present the best version of ourselves to the world. If the internet didn’t exist, then neither would we.

In the sci-fi movie The Final Cut people have their entire lives recorded through their eyes; then after they die, their happy memories are spliced together to give a “final edit” of the person’s life. Many of us are perpetually scrutinizing and editing this “final cut” of our own lives.

    The invention of new insecurities

Everything is being observed, recorded, and measured, so we have more tools than ever to compare ourselves against others.

This leads to the invention of all types of new insecurities. We are more aware of the ways we’re different from others, whether it’s our jobs, homes, relationships, health, appearances, or lifestyles. We can always find new ways we don’t “measure up” to the ideal.

New technologies create new ways to compare. Before you know it, you have people in heated competitions over who can do the most steps on their Fitbit, or consume the least amount of calories in a week, or receives the most likes on their gym posts. The internet becomes a never-ending competition.

Of course, measuring your progress can be a valuable tool for motivation and reaching goals. The problem is when we use these numbers to measure up against others vs. measure up against our past self. Always remember that everyone is on a completely different path.

It’s well-known that social comparison is one of the ultimate traps when it comes to happiness and well-being. You’ll always be able to find someone who has it better than you in some area of life, and with the internet that’s usually an easy search.

These endless comparisons touch on all aspects of life and heighten self-scrutiny and self-criticism. Finding and dwelling on even “minor differences” can spiral into a cycle of self-pity and self-hate. If we don’t remove ourselves from these comparisons, then we have no choice but to try to live up to them and beat ourselves up when we fail.

    Conclusion

The goal of this article was to describe some of the key forces that are making society more narcissistic and self-centered.

Different cultural beliefs and attitudes incentive certain personality traits over others. Our current world seems to continue moving down a more narcissistic path, especially with the increased focus on “image” (or “personal brand”) that we build for ourselves through the internet and social media.

Most of the ideas in this article are based on the book The Culture of Narcissism which, despite being written over 40 years, is an insightful look into how these social forces continue to grow and evolve.

Do you feel like our current society is getting more narcissistic? How have these social forces influenced the way you live?

LAPD Chief Michel Moore to step down at end of February

Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore announced Friday that he will step down as head of the LAPD at the end of February, after which time the city and department officials will begin the process of finding a new leader to take over one of the most unique and challenging jobs in law enforcement.

At a news conference with Mayor Karen Bass, Moore said he was proud of his career at the department and choked back tears.

“During my tenure, I know I’ve made mistakes and missteps,” Moore said. “But I’m also confident that my work has seen success across a broad spectrum of topics unmatched by any other law enforcement agency in this country.”

Bass praised Moore and thanked him for his work, saying he made the decision to leave recently.

“Chief Moore let me know that his timeline was moving up to spend more time with his family,” Bass said. “This means, of course, that the police commission will have to appoint an interim chief and a nationwide search will be conducted now because his timeline was moved up and that was unexpected.”

Bass said she had asked Moore to “serve in a consulting capacity to assist an interim chief,” and that he had agreed to the offer.

Moore has endured a series of department controversies in recent months, including a string of officer misconduct incidents and a whistleblower complaint that alleged that two detectives were ordered to investigate Bass shortly after her election. Moore vehemently denied the allegations.

Before his reappointment in January 2023 to a second five-year term as the city’s top cop, Moore said he would serve for two or three years before turning the department over to a new chief ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.

Moore said at the time he wanted more time to finish the job he started when he took over the department in 2018. Moore said he wanted to continue reforms on use of force and diversity and avoid a “haphazard” transition before the Olympics, which are set to start soon after his full second term would have expired. He said he would spend the next few years laying the groundwork for a succession plan.

Bass reappointed Moore to a second five-year term over the concern of critics who argued that the scope of scandals that have plagued the department during his tenure reflected a poor track record for any leader.

Moore’s backers say the department has embraced reforms in the wake of the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and other flash points from 2020, including expanding community outreach efforts and placing new limits on pretextual traffic stops that Moore said “undermined public trust and confidence but also added little merit from a law enforcement standpoint.”

The LAPD has gotten more diverse under his watch, Moore said. He has also defended his record of promoting female officers, pointing out a series of recent appointments of female officials, including one to deputy chief.

The latest LAPD data indicate that crime is trending downward, and Moore had enjoyed the public support of Bass and the Police Commission. In recent months, though, the department has been roiled by allegations that one of Moore’s assistant chiefs surreptitiously tracked an officer with whom he’d been romantically involved, and a scandal involving gang unit officers suspected of thefts and illegal stops.

The episodes renewed questions about management and oversight of the nation’s third-largest police department.

Then last month, two detectives in the LAPD’s Internal Affairs Division filed complaints alleging they were ordered to investigate Bass, possibly at Moore’s behest. The claims are being investigated by the inspector general’s office.

Moore denied the allegations, telling The Times: “I have no such knowledge of any alleged investigation nor would I initiate any such investigation.”

The 63-year-old Moore secured the police chief’s job in 2018 after nearly four decades with the LAPD, rising through the ranks and becoming known for his statistics-driven policing approach. He was at the helm at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a marked rise in violent crimes and homicides in L.A., as elsewhere. Last year, however, there was a drop in violent crimes and homicides, a decline that has continued through most of 2023.

Moore pledged a more compassionate approach to policing following his appointment by Mayor Eric Garcetti. Early in his tenure, he weathered severe criticism for his handling of mass demonstrations in Los Angeles over the deaths of Floyd and other Black Americans killed in police custody. Officers were repeatedly accused of using heavy-handed tactics against protesters who took to the streets.

Moore has also faced the challenge of running a department that is several hundred officers short of its allotted strength of 9,500 officers, a gap that made it harder to keep police on the streets.

Bass, who took office in December 2022 after campaigning on the promise of bringing more police accountability and transparency, said previously she believed Moore shared her desire to see the department improve its recruitment of “reform-minded” officers and change how it responds to calls involving the mentally ill.

But Moore’s leadership has come into question as several of his top commanders and closest confidantes have become caught up in scandals. One assistant chief retired under a cloud of suspicion, after being caught having sex with a subordinate in a government car.

Another LAPD captain was found to have leaked confidential details of a sex crime victim and her police report to the alleged perpetrator, then CBS head Les Moonves.

In 2022, a jury awarded a female Los Angeles police commander $4 million in damages for a sexual harassment lawsuit against the city over a nude photograph that was doctored to look like her and shared around the department.

In 2021, a botched fireworks explosion by the department’s bomb squad leveled a South L.A. neighborhood. Moore faced withering criticism over the incident. Last July, he issued a statement promising to improve the department.

“This neighborhood is resilient, and we will continue the work of repairing our relationship with this community we have sworn to protect and serve,” Moore said.

  • Jane Fonda Reveals Why Her Father Once Slapped Her In The Face

Jane Fonda Reveals Why Her Father Once Slapped Her In The Face

    Opinion

Source YouTube: Kerry Washington, On Golden Pond

The radically liberal actress Jane Fonda is speaking out this week to reveal why her legendary Hollywood star father Henry Fonda once smacked her across the face.

    Jane’s Father Smacked Her

While appearing on the former “Scandal” actress Kerry Washington’s “Street You Grew Up On” podcast, Jane recalled when her father married his second wife Susan Blanchard, a Jewish socialite and stepdaughter of musical theater director and composer Oscar Hammerstein II, after the suicide of her mother. When he married Susan, Henry moved to Greeenwich Village in New York City, across the country from where Jane and her younger brother Peter were raised in Los Angeles.

“She (Susan) had African-American friends, and for the first time I got to know Geoffrey Holder, who I now realize — I always thought of him as a dancer — but someone just gave me a book … of his artwork. He was a great artist,” said Jane, 86.

When asked by Kerry if she was exposed to black people in Los Angeles, Jane replied, “No, not at all. Not exposed to people of color at all.”

“I didn’t know racism until I went to Greenwich,” she continued. “That was the first time I ever heard the N-word, and I repeated the N-word once, and [it was] the only time in his life that my dad whacked me across the face. He said, ‘Don’t you ever, ever say that word again.’”

Jane went on to say that when Henry was a child, his father forced him to watch a Black man be hanged and his body be dragged around the town’s square in Omaha, Nebraska.

“That had a huge impact on my father,” she explained, adding that it inspired him to make movies like The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), The Wrong Man (1956), and 12 Angry Men (1957).

“He cared about justice and he hated racism, and, you know, with that slap taught me to pay attention,” Jane concluded.

    Henry Was A Republican

Though Jane has been known for decades for her radically liberal activism that earned her the nickname Hanoi Jane during the Vietnam War, her father was actually a registered Republican in his younger days, something that shocked both of his children when they found out.

“Several years ago a friend of mine sent me a wallet that had belonged to my father,” her late brother Peter told AARP in 2013. “Inside was an uncashed check from my maternal grandmother and his first voter I.D.  And the card had him as a Republican!”

“My sister could not and would not believe it,” he added with a laugh. “She had the worst time with that! I figured I’d wait until she really dug herself into a hole, and then I’d drop it on her, because I had the weapon in my hand.”

    Jane Slams Henry

Last year, Jane spoke out to slam her father, who died in 1982, for the way he raised her.

“He never brought joy home,” Jane said of Henry, according to Daily Mail. “I never felt that he got joy… it never manifested when he came home, so it was not like ‘oh my God, I want what he’s got.’”

Jane said this as she spoke about why she decided to become an actress.

“I’m not one of those who grew up wanting to perform, wanting to be an actor. I didn’t think that I had talent,” she explained. “I wish that somebody had said to me, ‘Don’t give up, keep going, it’ll get better,’ because I saw no future. I didn’t think that I would live past 30. That’s why…I don’t take anything for granted.”

One can’t help but think that Henry would be very dismayed to see how his daughter turned out. What do you think of Jane’s latest comments? Let us know in the comments section.

Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner's Ex Accuses Him of Fat-Shaming, Lying

    ABC/Brian Bowen Smith

The Golden Bachelor star Gerry Turner isn’t focused on his ex speaking out about the ups and downs of their nearly three-year relationship.

“My only response is that I have so many positive things in my life right now,” Turner told The Los Angeles Times on Thursday, November 30, when asked about the recent report regarding his previous relationships. “I have the wonderful love of Theresa, my partner. I don’t have time to reflect on comments like this. I’m happy to look forward.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Turner dated a handful of women after his wife, Toni, died in 2017. One of those women, referred to by the name Carolyn in the story published on Wednesday, November 28, claimed that Turner once fat-shamed her before joining him at his high school reunion.

“I’m not taking you to the reunion looking like that,” Carolyn, who told the outlet that she had recently gained 10 pounds due to stress, alleged Turner said while pointing to her body. The comment served as the catalyst for their January 2020 breakup.

Turner subsequently asked Carolyn to move out of his Indiana lake house and while packing, Carolyn told the outlet that she fell down the stairs and was taken to the ER, something she says Turner believed to be an excuse to delay her move and sue him for the injury. As a result, Turner asked her to leave the property one week earlier than planned and stay in a hotel.

“I really wish this would’ve worked out,’” Carolyn claimed Turner told her as he helped her to her car with her walker. “Call me when you get to your hotel, so I know you made it safe.”

Carolyn, who is 14 years Turner’s junior, met the Bachelor Nation star while working at the Vera French Mental Health Center in Iowa and claimed they began dating him one month after Toni’s death. Their relationship is contradictory to Turner’s claims on The Golden Bachelor that his love life had been on pause since his wife’s passing.

“The idea that I’d go out with a recent widower just mortifies me,” she told the outlet. “I just didn’t see it. Until I went back and looked at my text messages, I never realized Gerry’s texts had turned hot and heavy so relatively soon.”

Chris Lopez held nothing back while sharing his thoughts about pregnant ex Kailyn Lowry in a lengthy social media rant.

“Bro, ain’t nobody more miserable than my baby mama, bro. My first baby mama, Kail Lowry,” he claimed in an Instagram Story video posted on Monday, November 20. “Ain’t nobody more miserable than that chick.”

He went on to accuse Lowry, 31, of “holding” their kids from him while “passing them on to motherf–king nannies” at the same time. “[The] kids [are] on Thanksgiving break and you ain’t gonna let the kids be with their dad, but it’s technically dad’s week?” Lopez stated. “You need to grow the f–k up, seriously, and stay the f–k off your back.”

Lopez and Lowry dated off and on from 2016 to 2020, during which time they welcomed sons Lux, 6, and Creed, 3. Lowry also shares son Isaac, 13, with ex Jo Rivera, son Lincoln, 10, with ex-husband Javi Marroquin, and son Rio, 12 months, with boyfriend Elijah Scott. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Ski Trial Inspired a Musical Opening in London

Gwyneth Paltrow’s unforgettable ski crash trial is getting the musical treatment.

Gwyneth Goes Skiing, a parody show inspired by the trial, will open at the U.K.’s Pleasance London Main House Cabaret on December 13 and run through December 23. Created by British theater group Awkward Productions, actors Linus Karp and Joseph Martin will star as Paltrow, 51, and optometrist Terry Sanderson, respectively.

“She’s the Goop-founding, Shakespeare-In-Loving, consciously-uncoupling Hollywood superstar. He’s a retired Optometrist from Utah. In 2016, they went skiing,” reads a description of the musical shared via Instagram. “On the slopes of Deer Valley, their worlds collided and so did they — literally. Ouch. In 2023, they went to court. Double ouch.”

Gwyneth Goes Skiing is not the only project based on the trial in the works. Warner Bros. Discovery UK & Ireland announced in July that the case would be turned into a docuseries titled Gwyneth vs Terry: The Ski Crash Trial.

Sanderson, 76, sued Paltrow in January 2019 for allegedly crashing into him while skiing in Deer Valley, Utah, three years prior. In court docs obtained by Us Weekly at the time, Sanderson claimed that he suffered “a brain injury, four broken ribs and other serious injuries” after Paltrow lost control on the slopes and hit him in the back. He asked for more than $3 million in damages.

Sanderson also claimed that Paltrow’s ski instructor “failed to send help” after the incident and “filed a false report to protect his client.” Paltrow, for her part, responded to the accusations in a statement to Us, noting, “This lawsuit is completely without merit and we expect to be vindicated.” She filed a countersuit in February 2019, claiming that she sustained a “full body blow” after Sanderson “plowed into her back.”

The case went to trial earlier this year after a judge lowered Sanderson’s damages request to $300,000. The week-long trial made headlines in March, from Paltrow’s courtroom style to lawyers questioning her friendship with Taylor Swift.

While testifying on the third day of the trial, Paltrow claimed that she initially thought the crash was a sexual assault. “I was skiing and two skis came between my skis forcing my legs apart and then there was a body pressing against me and there was a very strange grunting noise so my brain was trying to make sense of what was happening,” she said. “I thought, ‘Is this a practical joke? Is someone doing something perverted? This is really, really strange.’ My mind was going very quickly and I was trying to ascertain what was happening.”

Robert De Niro’s girlfriend, Tiffany Chen, was not a fan of his relationship with his former assistant Graham Chase Robinson.

De Niro, 80, testified against Robinson, 41, in a New York City court on Monday, October 30, four years after Robinson accused the actor of being an abusive boss during her time working for him from 2008 to 2019. According to the Associated Press, during his testimony, De Niro said Chen was suspicious of Robinson. The AP reports that it was suggested that Robinson acted like De Niro’s wife and had “imaginary intimacy” with him.

“She felt there was something there and she may have been right,” De Niro said of his girlfriend’s observations. Chen and De Niro met on the set of 2015’s The Intern and began dating in 2021. The couple welcomed their first child together — De Niro’s seventh — daughter Gia, in April.

Robinson’s attorney, Andrew Macurdy, denied any romance speculation between his client and De Niro, stating, “There was never anything romantic between the two of them.” Macurdy subsequently alleged that Chen became jealous of De Niro’s reliance on Robinson to do multiple tasks such as decorating his Christmas tree, acting as his emergency contact, writing greeting cards for his children and transporting him to the hospital after he cracked his back in 2017.

In the lawsuit, Robinson accused De Niro yelling at her, calling her names and making sexist remarks. Since Robinson quit her job in 2019, Macurdy said his client has been unable to find work and is afraid to leave her home. She is suing for $12 million in emotional damages and harm against her reputation.

De Niro reportedly appeared aggravated during Monday’s trial and raised his voice twice during his testimony, per the AP. When asked whether he thought Robinson was a good employee, he responded, “Not after everything I’m going through now.”

De Niro’s attorney, Richard Schoenstein, described him as a “kind, reasonable [and] generous” boss and told jurors that employees of De Niro’s company, Canal Productions, would prove that in their upcoming testimonies. Schoenstein claimed that Robinson “always played the victim” and described her as “condescending, demeaning, controlling [and] abusive.”

In her October 2019 lawsuit, obtained by NBC News, Robinson stated that some of the “demanding duties” that she did for De Niro included buttoning his shirts, scratching his back and cleaning his apartment. Regarding his sexist comments, Robinson called her former boss “someone who has clung to old mores,” adding, “He does not accept the idea that men should treat women as equals. He does not care that gender discrimination in the workplace violates the law.”

In a countersuit, Canal Productions sued Robinson for allegedly spending thousands of dollars of the company’s money, binge-watching Netflix on the job and transferring hundreds of thousands dollars in airline miles to her personal account, among other allegations, according to The New York Times.

Prior to Halloween weekend, SAG-AFTRA released guidelines regarding how striking actors can dress up for the holiday without crossing the picket lines.

“This Halloween, we wanted to make sure our members don’t inadvertently break strike rules, and have put together some quick tips on the dos and don’ts for costumes,” the notice shared via the official SAG-AFTRA strike website on October 18 read. “Check them out and have a spooktacular Halloween!”

One tip noted that actors can “dress up as characters from non-struck content, like an animated TV show.” However, they should not “post photos of costumes inspired by struck content to social media” — which appears to be the rule that Fox broke.

In her social media post on Sunday, Walter explained that “no one cares about kids’ costumes,” noting that the SAG-AFTRA’s concern is with “high pros at fancy parties. Like Megan.” (Ryan Reynolds previously poked fun at the guidelines and how it would impact his and Blake Lively’s kids’ costumes, joking that he’d be “screaming ‘scab’ at my 8 year old all night” while trick or treating.)

Actress Paige McGarvin also spoke out in the comments section of Fox’s social media post.

“You look amazing but i wish you didn’t post this,” she wrote. “I totally understand if you disagree with sag and want to voice that privately / to your inner circle, but using your massive platform to undermine the union and sow seeds of division in an incredibly public way does nothing but hurt our leverage with the amptp.”

The members of SAG-AFTRA have been striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) since July — two months after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike started in May — with their biggest points of contention being additional compensation for actors due to the success of streaming services and the use of AI in Hollywood.

While the WGA strike came to an end last month, SAG-AFTRA members are still working to negotiate with AMPTP and four major studio CEOs: Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley and Disney’s Bob Iger.

After meeting with the CEOs on October 11, SAG-AFTRA released a statement noting that proposals had been “rejected” and further talks have been put on hold.

“It really came as a shock to me because what does that exactly mean and why would you walk away from the table?” SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said during an October 13 appearance on the Today show about ending the strike. “It’s not like we’re asking for anything that’s so outrageous.”

Trevor Donovon is coming to former Dancing With the Stars partner Emma Slater’s defense.

The actor, 41, took to social media on Friday, October 27, to address rumors that Slater, 34, is dating her season 32 partner, Mauricio Umansky, amid his separation from wife Kyle Richards.

“Many don’t understand the intense pressures of #DWTS,” Donovan wrote via X (formerly known as Twitter) while reflecting back on his time on the show. “The exhaustive nature of the rehearsals, and the stress of the show night performance. Forming a deep bond and friendship with your partner is natural under such circumstances.”

Donovan — who also made headlines for his chemistry with Slater during their partnership —  noted that he grew “very close” to the Australia native during his time on the ABC competition series and that the two are still “very close” today. “I guess some will always see drama where there’s none,” he said.

Many Dancing With the Stars contestants have such a palpable connection on the dance floor that fans start to speculate whether those bonds extend to real life. “We really do get on and have great chemistry, which made this dance so much easier,”  Emma Slater told Us Weekly in September 2022 after DWTS host  Alfonso […]

Romance rumors between Slater and Umansky, 53, began to swirl earlier this month after they were spotted holding hands in Beverly Hills. The duo addressed the speculation days later, insisting they are nothing more than “really good friends.”

“For full clarity we are not dating,” Umansky shared in an Instagram Story video on Thursday, October 26. “We’ve been dancing together now for six weeks, four hours a day every single day.” The real estate mogul explained that he and Slater went “to a restaurant to go get some sushi right after rehearsal” after a “very intense” and emotional week.

“We were talking about the week during the dinner and when we came out of dinner we were recapping, and I reached out to grab Emma’s hand,” he said. “She grabbed my hand and then we walked to the cars, just recapping.”

Slater — who filed for divorce from estranged husband and fellow DWTS pro Sasha Farber in February —then chimed in to call the show’s process “intense,” adding that a “very special bond” is formed between the celebrity and their professional dance partner, noting that she and Umansky share “similar personalities.”

Speculation the pair’s relationship is more than just professional comes amid Umansky’s separation from Richards, 54. Us Weekly confirmed in July the duo had separated after 27 years of marriage. At the time, the estranged couple shared a joint statement about their “tough year” but insisted that they had no plans to divorce. (Umansky and Richards share daughters Alexia, 27, Sophia, 23, and Portia, 15. Richards also shares daughter Farrah, 34, with first husband Guraish Aldjufrie.)

After the hand-holding photographs went viral, Richards deleted an Instagram post from September in support of Umansky and Slater’s DWTS partnership, later sharing that she was “hurt” by the images.

“I don’t know if anything’s happened yet, but obviously there’s something there,” the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star told host Andy Cohen during the Wednesday, October 25, episode of Watch What Happens Live. “Listen, I love him very much and we are amicable.” Richards added that she was “taken aback” by the snaps, which were “very hard” for her to see.

“That hurt my feelings. … I just don’t think you hold hands like that with somebody,” she said.

Slater later told reporters that people “expect that steam” and that partners are expected to “tell a story” with their dancing. “I honestly believe in Trevor. I believe in his dance ability,” she continued. “I know we have this great connection, this great chemistry.”

Erin Foster is claiming Chad Michael Murray cheated on her with One Tree Hill costar — and now ex-wife — Sophia Bush.

“I mean he definitely cheated on me with [Bush] in, like, a pretty egregious way,” Erin, 41, said to sister Sara Foster during the Thursday, October 19, episode of their “World’s First Podcast” show.

The sisters were discussing how their love lives — specifically Sara’s “one date” with Ryan Gosling and Erin’s relationship with Murray, 42 — had been a topic of conversation on the celebrity gossip page Deux Moi. “Deux Moi, they don’t lie,” Sara, 42, said. “That’s what happened.”

Erin noted that the pair were “living together” at the time, before adding with a laugh, “I’ve moved on though, I’m over it. Just barely.”

Erin and Murray started dating in 2001. He later moved on with Bush after the pair met on the set of their CW series in 2003. They wed one month before the season 3 finale aired in April 2005.

Just five months later, they announced their separation — just as their characters reignited their on-screen romance — among rumors that Murray cheated on Bush with Paris Hilton while shooting their film House Of Wax. Their divorce was finalized in December 2006.

Murray and Bush continued to work together for three more seasons of OTH before Murray’s departure in 2009. During a January 2014 interview with Andy Cohen, Bush opened up about the difficulties of filming a TV show alongside her ex-husband.

“At the end of the day we’re grownups, and I actually think what’s interesting about it is that when people split in a way that’s unpleasant, they usually just go on quite literally hating each other — or the person in my situation hates the other person, whatever — but when you have to work with somebody for another half a decade, you kind of have to deal with it,” Bush explained. “Because for me, at the end of the day, my job is my priority. And so I think at the end of it, it really let me just let go of it.”

After the breakup, Bush and fellow costar Austin Nichols had an on-and-off relationship for six years before Us Weekly exclusively confirmed their split in February 2012. She tied the knot with Grant Hughes in June 2022 before filing for divorce just one year later. She is now reportedly dating soccer player Ashlyn Harris.

Murray, for his part, ended his engagement with Kenzie Dalton — an OTH cheerleader extra — in September 2013 after seven years together. He tied the knot with wife Sarah Roemer in January 2015 and the pair share three children.

  • The Brief Death (and Short Rebirth) of Lil Tay

The Brief Death (and Short Rebirth) of Lil Tay

Harry Tsang moved to Los Angeles about eight years ago. He was ready to make the switch from his previous base of Orlando to operate on a bigger stage. At 32 years old, he prides himself on his experience in the social media business—“I’m among the oldest, basically,” he said. Within a couple years of his move, he began managing Woah Vicky, a blonde 17-year-old social media personality who made sport of defending her claim that she was Black. The maneuver brought Vicky a short run of 2017-vintage celebrity, and it brought Tsang in touch with Lil Tay, a 10-year-old from Vancouver who called herself “the youngest flexer” and covered herself online in hundred-dollar bills and designer clothes.

Danielle Bregoli Brawls With Woah Vicky and Lil Tay!!!” a TMZ headline read in 2018. Vicky had been in a feud, she said, with Bregoli (another social media personality better known as Bhad Bhabie) and they met up outside the Americana mall in Glendale, California, to escalate the dispute. Lil Tay came along, and her star began to rise; she associated online with rappers Lil Pump, Chief Keef, and XXXTentacion, and met up with storied hip-hop producer Rick Rubin. In September 2018, Tsang said, he flew to Vancouver to work out an arrangement with Lil Tay’s father to become her manager, joining the gaggle of adults jousting for a hand in her future.

For a numbing, amusing, concerning few months, Lil Tay was a persistent social media phenomenon. She said she grew up broke in Atlanta and dropped out of Harvard. She recorded rap music and sent brash provocations at other online personalities to form absorbing, if obvious, contrasts of stature, age, and race. She was also the central figure in a series of battles among relatives, hangers-on, and manager types. “There’s a lot of, quote, unquote, former managers,” one of the latter recently told me, “but no one really represented her to the fullest, like I did.”

After Lil Tay and her half-brother Jason Tian moved to Los Angeles to build her career, Jason developed some notoriety of his own. In May 2018, a video circulated of him feeding his sister lines to recite for her persona, and New York reported in 2019 that he operated her Instagram account. Jason was at the time a 16-year old rapper and YouTuber, but appeared to find a new lane as Lil Tay’s Svengali as she became known for a series of staged stunts and controversies. In 2021, allegations that Lil Tay’s father, Chris Hope, abused her appeared on her Instagram. Hope denied the claims and sent Instagram a cease-and-desist letter; there’s no mention of abuse allegations in the available Vancouver court records for a long-running custody battle between Hope and Lil Tay’s mother, Angela Tian. Jason raised more than $17,000 on GoFundMe on the basis of his claim that Hope abused Lil Tay. (Jason and Lil Tay have different fathers. Angela and Hope’s relationship ended in 2008, according to court records, the year after Lil Tay was born.)

“Her brother was the creator behind the character,” the former manager told me. “I do believe that he has some narcissistic traits. I think he was very egotistical and obviously consumed by fame, popularity, and a position of power.”

All of this has largely been forgotten in the years since. Lil Tay’s particular strain of celebrity had been fleeting to begin with, and by now an uncountable number of other microfame eras have passed. Then, earlier this month, a post on Lil Tay’s Instagram account announced that she and Jason had both died. A frenzy ensued, harking back to the siblings’ heyday.

Lil Tay’s father sounded confused when asked by the New York Post whether someone could confirm his daughter’s death, telling the tabloid, “Um, no, not that I’m aware of.” Tsang muddled matters further when he told The Sun, “Given the complexities of the current circumstances, I am at a point where I cannot definitively confirm or dismiss the legitimacy of the statement issued by the family.”

“That Harry Tsang guy gave that dumbass statement,” the former manager told me, “which was a bunch of words saying nothing at all.” Tsang told me that soon after the purported death announcement, he called Duane Laventure, whom he described as the family’s “handler.” “When I was on the phone with him, he refused to comment,” Tsang said. “And then from that point on I knew something was up.” (Laventure didn’t return a request for comment.) Reports that a Lil Tay cryptocurrency was released shortly after the announcement compounded the sense that something had been staged.

“I pray its not real kid,” Alex “Loyalty” Gelbard, another former Lil Tay manager, wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of himself and her.

A full day passed before Lil Tay told TMZ that she and her brother were, in fact, alive and that she had merely been hacked. A spokesperson for Meta, which owns Instagram, later told the outlet that she was being truthful about not being able to access her account and that the company helped her get it back. (Meta didn’t return a request for further comment.)

This did not settle the matter for those who have been in Lil Tay’s orbit. “I believe the reported hacking incident may not have occurred,” Tsang told The Daily Beast, adding, “the actions of Lil Tay’s brother, renowned for his propensity for extreme measures, lead me to hypothesize an alternative motive behind this occurrence.” He guessed that it was a publicity stunt designed to “illicitly extract funds from devoted supporters and unwitting bystanders.”

“Based on my experience of working with her brother,” the former manager told me, “he will do anything and everything to gain attention. And that’s exactly what I believe he did.”

“Crazy 48 hours,” Gelbard wrote on Instagram. “I’ve seen a lot of things done irresponsibly to leverage things, but this went too far. A hustle is a hustle but EVERYONE has to have a limit.” (When reached for further comment, Gelbard said, “I’m just cautious because of everything happening right now. I lost my own IG during all this.”)

  • Ghislaine Maxwell Called ‘Prison Karen’ for Constant Complaining | Entrepreneur

Ghislaine Maxwell Called ‘Prison Karen’ for Constant Complaining | Entrepreneur

Ghislaine Maxwell spent years convincing girls as young as 14 to be abused by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Now she’s trying to convince officials at FCI Tallahassee, where she is serving a 20-year sentence, to stop their “unfair treatment.”

According to a report in The Daily Mail, Maxwell has filed 400 complaints since arriving at the federal prison in July.

“Max is the prison Karen. She can file a grievance over anything – she has over 400 of them,” an insider told the British tabloid. “She complains about the food, the bedding, when they cancel temple because of bad weather or are late setting up her legal calls.”

Entrepreneur was unable to verify the source’s information independently.

Maxwell has allegedly griped that the prison’s vegan menu was insufficient for her needs, she demanded that authorities replace her bedding with hypoallergenic pillows — a request that was honored — and she was angered over the lack of access to a particular black hair dye she wanted for an interview with the BBC.

According to the source, she ended up paying $200 to another inmate for the dye.

In one instance, Maxwell almost came to blows with another inmate in the laundry room, after she demanded Maxwell return her temporary shoes.

“That caused a big argument, and Max complained that she felt threatened and refused to go back to the laundry unaccompanied,” the source said. “That’s her in a nutshell. Every aspect of prison life offers an opportunity for her to play the victim. She creates constant drama for staff and inmates alike.”

The guards have supposedly retaliated by canceling a bunch of courses Maxwell teaches about social media marketing and etiquette.

Accusations of a ploy to change prisons

After her conviction, Maxwell’s attorneys requested that she serve her time in FCI Danbury in Connecticut, a prison believed to be the model for the Netflix show “Orange is the New Black.” But The Bureau of Prisons decided that Maxwell be moved to the low-security federal prison in FCI Tallahassee in Florida.

According to the Daily Mail source, Maxwell allegedly wants to be shipped out to Connecticut. “Tallahassee is big. It’s old. It’s ghetto. Max has too many enemies, and she wants out.”

    Why Maxwell is in prison

Maxwell, 61, was convicted in 2021 on five counts of sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking for her role in grooming and recruiting underage girls who were abused by the late financial advisor Epstein.

The daughter of a wealthy newspaper tycoon, Maxwell used her social status to lure girls into Epstein’s orbit. She would often give the girls gifts and pretend to be a mentor.

“You spotted me at the Mar-a-Lago Hotel in Florida, and you made a choice. You chose to follow me and procure me for Jeffrey Epstein, one of her victims, Virginia Giuffre, told Maxwell in court. “Just hours later, you and he abused me together for the first time. Together, you damaged me physically, mentally, sexually, and emotionally.”

  • ‘The Secrets of Hillsong’: How Did the Church Get Here—And What Comes Next?

‘The Secrets of Hillsong’: How Did the Church Get Here—And What Comes Next?

What’s the current state of Hillsong in terms of membership in the US and abroad? Does it still have any famous followers?

Adler: Hillsong New York is down to about 500 attendees a week following years of spectacular services that were known to resemble rock concerts. Celebrities have distanced themselves either through public statements or moving on to other churches. Chris Pratt went out of his way to tell Men’s Health in 2022 that he never went to Hillsong. Hailey and Justin Bieber unfollowed Lentz on Instagram. “AND BTW HILLSONG IS NOT MY CHURCH,” Justin wrote on the platform. “FOR CLARITY I AM A PART OF CHURCHOME.” If there are any remaining famous followers, they’re not being public about it.

How crucial was celebrity—both in the form of notable congregants and pastors who achieve a level of notoriety themselves—to Hillsong’s success? Was it always part of the church’s playbook?

Adler: There are a ton of megachurches. Hillsong’s success relied on its distinctiveness, its ability to capture media attention, and the sense that it occupied the peak of its ecosystem. All of that was powered by the church’s affiliations with wealth and fame. For decades, Houston and his closest associates mixed with Australian bigwigs in politics, business, and sports. That model played out on a more visible scale in the States during the 2010s. For large swathes of American pop culture enthusiasts, Lentz is known primarily as Justin Bieber’s former pastor. In the heyday of the New York branch, he and his top lieutenants became minor celebrities unto themselves because of such associations and because of the reach Instagram afforded them. They were new, attractive, and famous-adjacent. That’s a set of conditions that tends to have an expiration date no matter what, and in this instance, the end came much quicker after the Hillsong name became a liability.

Can Hillsong survive without celebrity followers?

Adler: The church continues to exist. It may survive in the sense that it will hold services and release music. But the idea that it would ever again possess its old glimmer seems like an impossibility given that the name is what they were selling, and the name no longer possesses glamor.

The series focuses in part on the idea of spiritual abuse. Can you explain what that means and how it informed your reporting. Do former (or current) Hillsong congregants feel as though the term applies to their experience in the church?

French: My sense of spiritual abuse is that a church’s function is to provide its members with comfort, guidance, community, a sense of being closer to God. Many people go to church because they feel called to go and when they go they open themselves up to an incredibly vulnerable place. When a religious organization seizes upon those feelings—that state of vulnerability—profit or exploit…that is spiritual abuse. We spoke to people from Hillsong NYC and Los Angeles who felt that way during our initial round of reporting in 2020–2021. And while reporting The Secrets of Hillsong with Stacey Lee, we heard from people who went to the church in Australia or Frank Houston’s church in New Zealand who felt as though they had been victims of spiritual abuse. People who were deeply devoted to their pastor and the congregation and left the church feeling broken.

You spoke to dozens of Hillsong congregants in reporting on the story over the years. How did they describe the church’s initial appeal? And do those who left have any common complaints?

Adler: The prevailing sense was that if the church achieved the mission it proposed, it would provide just about anything you could ask for: community, personality, fulfillment, romance, status, friendship. It was a powerful proposition. There was an abundance of charisma on offer, primarily through Lentz, and there are slim pickings for Christian cultural touchstones. The services were exciting and the pastors orchestrating them were considered legitimately cool and aspirational. Congregants often described feeling like they had found a home, but also a project they could get behind for years to come.

Former congregants have expressed regret, anger, and sometimes embarrassment. They feel like they were swindled. There’s a great deal of interest in the comings and goings of the top Hillsong New York pastors—the people who were on top of this and slipped away as it fell apart.

  • Prince Andrew and Fergie’s Unconventional Love Story

Prince Andrew and Fergie’s Unconventional Love Story

Are Prince Andrew and Fergie back together? Since the Duke and Duchess of York’s divorce in 1996, royal watchers have been asking if the exes will tie the knot for a second time. The Yorks have given the public many reasons to speculate. The controversial, scandal-prone couple still live together at the Royal Lodge, and even adopted Queen Elizabeth’s corgis, Muick and Sandy, after the monarch’s death in September 2022. For the world’s “happiest divorced couple,” it’s their own version of happily ever after. “We enjoy each other’s company; we allow each other to blossom,” Fergie once said. “I know it sounds like a fairytale but that’s the way we are.”

1985: Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson Start to Date

Although they had played tag together as children, it is Princess Diana who ignites the romantic relationship between Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

According to reports, Princess Diana believes her friend Fergie, the fun-loving, outgoing daughter of Prince Charles’s polo manager, will get along famously with Prince Andrew, the queen’s favorite son whose raunchy ways have earned him the nickname “Randy Andy.” And she’s right. On June 18, 1985, Prince Andrew and Fergie are seated next to each other for a luncheon at Windsor Castle, during the week of the Royal Ascot. They get on like a house on fire. “He fed her profiteroles and she punched him in the arm, saying they were much too fattening,” Kitty Kelley writes in The Royals. “He tried to stuff them into her mouth, and she laughingly threatened a food fight.”

Thus begins a whirlwind romance. “In Andrew I found my perfect man and soul mate. He was relaxed and endlessly charming, a prankster like me, yet solid and kind,” Fergie writes in Finding Sarah: A Duchess’s Journey to Find Herself. “In me, I suppose Andrew saw a wildflower — a bubbly and forthright woman without pretense or motives. Together we were like well-matched bookends, pleasant to look at and equally supportive of one another.”

    1986: The Engagement

On February 19, 1986, Prince Andrew proposes to Fergie at Floors Castle in Scotland. According to The Royals, the proposal goes off in the couple’s signature cheeky fashion:

During a game of hide-and-seek, Andrew hid under a table, and Sarah, who was blindfolded, crawled around the floor looking for him. When she found him, she pinched his behind — hard. “Steady on!” he shouted. “You’re not allowed to squeeze the royal bottom yet!” That evening he proposed. Sarah replied, “When you wake up tomorrow morning, you can tell me it’s all a huge joke.” The next morning Andrew proposed again and gave her a $37,000 ruby ring.

1986: Prince Andrew and Fergie Wed

On July 23, 1986, Prince Andrew and Fergie’s wedding is held at Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony is viewed by an estimated 500 million people worldwide. Despite the enormous public interest, the newly styled Duchess of York calls it “the happiest day of my life.”

“With nearly a million people lining the one-mile route, Dad looked desperately flustered. But I was just cruising. This was fun,” Fergie recalled. “On my wedding day all I knew or cared about was that Fergie was in glorious vogue.”

  • Blood, Sweat, and Lashes: Inside the Competitive and Cutthroat False-Eyelash Market

Blood, Sweat, and Lashes: Inside the Competitive and Cutthroat False-Eyelash Market

First there was kohl. That was ancient Egypt, where both men and women used malachite and kohl to darken their lashes, but it took until the 19th century to bottle mascara and start the false-lash trend. Back then, the French began sewing hairs onto their eyelids, and a Canadian in the US patented an early version of “strip lashes,” the familiar crescent of lashes we now buy in pharmacies. Since then, oversized lashes have been intermittently popular—think Twiggy in the 1960s—with the current explosion beginning in the early 2000s, when the Asian eyelash-extension craze began to rip through Hollywood, with celebrities from Jennifer Lopez to Paris Hilton cramming into estheticians’ chairs to achieve peak flutter.

During these years, I was living in Los Angeles, and I had a friend who was obsessed with lashes. Sahara Lotti was a screenwriter who was also furiously buying and selling Balenciaga bags. She’d noticed that most of what she saw for sale online was fake, and wrote a manifesto about how to spot it, then sold a PDF of instructions online for five dollars. After that, she started calling around to Barneys and other department stores to order real Balenciagas, flipping them for a higher price on eBay. This sideline faded when she landed a script deal with Fox, but then she started moonlighting as an online intuitive, gathering Hollywood clients before she went on retainer for a member of the royal family of Qatar.

In other words, Lotti was a woman who could spot a hole in the market. And as she became increasingly intolerant of going out without her lashes, and increasingly bored of sitting in Koreatown having them applied on end, she started messing with lashes herself, trying to suss out a DIY method. My husband introduced her to an industrial designer for Starbucks who was interested in picking up freelance work, and the industrial designer introduced her to a brand designer. Within a few months, they all flew off to Korea. After that, when I’d visit her at home on Sunset Plaza Drive, she’d be focused on hair irons, glues, and cut-up lashes. She created a tweezer shaped like a Nike swoosh she called a “wand”; she wanted to attach each little cluster of hairs to the eye individually, which made fake lashes look more natural.

Lotti set Lashify’s price point high, and the margin higher. She rented a loft office on Greene Street, a warehouse in North Hollywood, a pop-up store in SoHo. Lupita Nyong’o and Nicole Kidman were wearing Lashify, and so was Cynthia Nixon during her campaign for mayor. Not that there was anything glamorous about the eyelash business; it was a grind, and she worked around the clock, convinced she was going to win this lash game. Like all entrepreneurs, particularly one who thinks she can read the future, she believed it was only a matter of time before everyone on earth realized they didn’t need mascara or extensions. They just needed Lashify.

There were other female inventors in the space, but not many. In 2012, Alexandra Byrne of Beta Beauty Lab patented a segmented style of strip lashes. Byrne wrote via email, “My technology came from being a makeup artist for runway shows in London, Europe, and New York. When I wanted the models to all look exactly the same, like an army, I started cutting apart different strip lashes into pieces (I called it the lash hospital) and then fitting every model individually—it was the only way to make all lashes look identical, by customizing them for each eye shape and face.”

There was also Katy Stoka, inventor of the wildly popular magnetic lash. Stoka’s lashes used rectangular magnets to attach fake lashes to your real ones. “It was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears developing the product, and then it was the biggest thrill of my life,” says Stoka. “I wasn’t even in the beauty industry and I invented something, built a patent around it, somehow got the prototype made. Next thing I knew, I was on the shelf in Sephora, and then we were the number-one-googled beauty question of 2018.”

Stoka was knocked off by Asian suppliers, who flooded the market with dupes—not a surprise in the IP game. You probably know that music is heavily copyrighted in the United States, and that fashion is largely not (the evidence is on display every time you walk into an H&M), but beauty giants take out loads of patents. For example, as of July 2020, L’Oréal has 3,717 patent families to guard against the types of lawsuits and conflicts that abound these days. Charlotte Tilbury pursued and won a copyright claim in the UK against Aldi after it released a makeup palette that she claimed copied her Filmstar Bronze and Glow. (At the time, an Aldi spokesperson said, “This matter relates to a product that was on sale for a very short period around December 2018.”) Revolution Beauty pulled its Honey Bear brow product off the market after indie brand Pink Honey accused it on social media of copying its Honey Glue Original Superhold for brows. Olaplex initially won a suit against L’Oréal, claiming the brand copied its hair-treatment tech, but an appeals court later threw out the ruling. (The case has since been settled to “mutual satisfaction,” the CEO of Olaplex told The New York Times.)
