Sandal Season Is Here: I Test-Drove 4 Anti-Trend Styles So You Don’t Have To

    [ad_1]

Flip-flops have undergone a renaissance over the last several years. Once a functional, practical piece often relegated to casual trips to the beach instead of high-fashion settings, flip-flops are now a staple in the wardrobes of style insiders. Flip-flops regularly appear everywhere, from street-style looks to runways to stylish vacations, and there’s no doubt they’re a packing essential for summer trips.

Whether you’re looking for trend-forward or streamlined designs, there is a style of flip-flops that will perfectly complete your summer looks. From easy flats to cool platforms to heeled versions, designers from Gia Borghini to The Row are debuting their own individual takes on flip-flops. Flip-flops are a key buy for the season, which is why I decided to test-drive a few standout styles and share my reviews.

Whether it’s the classic pair of Havaianas that will never cease to be relevant or the pretty hardware-embellished ones from Tory Burch I can’t stop staring at, consider this your ultimate guide to the anti-trend sandals for summer 2023 and beyond. Ahead, read my reviews for my four top picks, see how I’m styling each of them, and then add the best flip-flops to your cart armed with my shopping intel.

  • Zoë Kravitz Wore the Sandal Trend I Didn’t Think Would Last This Long

Zoë Kravitz Wore the Sandal Trend I Didn’t Think Would Last This Long

    [ad_1]

Do you remember a few years ago when elevated flip-flops were considered controversial? Who What Wear editors (myself included) wrote story after story on how flip-flops were “polarizing.” For this reason, I never thought they’d stick around for long. But now, we don’t even blink an eye when someone is spotted wearing them. And in case you were wondering if flip-flops would be cool again this summer, your answer is here.

Earlier this week, Zoë Kravitz was photographed walking around New York City in flip-flops. Since Kravitz doesn’t wear anything that isn’t cool, what she does wear is a pretty good indicator of what’s “in” and stylish. So yeah, I think it’s safe to say it wouldn’t be risky to order another pair of flip-flops for summer 2023. Kravitz paired her chic square-toed flip-flops with baggy trousers and a trench coat to create the perfect spring outfit if you ask me.

Scroll to see my picks for elevated flip-flops if you’re into Kravitz’s look.

  • Gigi Hadid Wore the Controversial Shoe Trend Everyone Has an Opinion On

Gigi Hadid Wore the Controversial Shoe Trend Everyone Has an Opinion On

    [ad_1]

Obviously, supermodel Gigi Hadid can wear absolutely anything she wants and get away with it. So, when she wears something slightly controversial, people tend to notice.

Recently, Hadid was snapped in casual weekend wear leaning on a bright red Coca-Cola van. The model, a recent spokesperson for the brand, paired colorful Teva Hurricane XLT2 sandals with plain white athletic socks, oversized yellow drawstring shorts, and a vintage-looking Mickey and Friends t-shirt. If not for her long legs, slicked-back hair, and layers of gold chain necklaces, Hadid could’ve been mistaken for, well, just a regular weekend warrior.

If, by some chance, you’ve never had the experience of wearing socks with sandals—or, to be more specific, wearing strappy Tevas with sporty white socks—then we have to say: don’t knock it ’til you try it. The look may give off major dadcore vibes, but that’s kind of the point, right? But, if you’re not sure that Father knows best, then rest assured knowing that Gigi Hadid certainly does.

7 Fashion Insiders Told Me Their Fave Designer Shoes RN—I’m Losing It Over Them

    [ad_1]

I’ve always felt like summer is the best season to invest in designer shoes. Trudging through snow in the winter makes me opt for sturdy and affordable pairs, as I know I may have to replace them the following year. But the time to treat yourself to great shoes is now. Designers are putting out bright and vibrant styles, and I am on the lookout for my next big purchase.

After a lot of scrolling and thinking, I still haven’t narrowed it down to just one pair, so I decided it was a good time to ask a few industry friends for their take on the best sandals to invest in. One thing that tied the entire crowd together was the fashion person’s love for good sandals. You’ll find that every person I asked came back to me with a stunning pair of sandals, and I think I need them all. Common themes among the crowd included bright colors, strappy silhouettes, and mules. You’re guaranteed to find a winner below, and the best part is the common theme here is anti-trend.

It’s that time of year again—ahem, sandal season. For many, it’s an exciting period where you can finally pack away the tights, put on a fresh coat of nail polish, and step out into the world in a cute pair of open-toe shoes. While the possibility of a whole new realm of footwear choices is exciting, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its own set of challenges. It’s relatively common to fantasize about emerging in the perfect outfit, only to subsequently realize you don’t own the right pair of shoes. And once you do know you’re missing them from your wardrobe, it can be equally daunting to decide what type of sandal fits your needs. Add on top of the fact that there are so many different trends, places to shop, and price points that it can feel impossible to discern whether shoes are worth investing in.

Nearly Every Fashion Girl Is Endorsing This Shoe Silhouette—Count Me One of Them

    [ad_1]

Only a few seasons ago sky-high platforms heels seemed to dominate every conversation, with Valentino and Versace defining the trend with their massive towering heels. But fashion is fickle and tastes are everchanging—this year we’ve shifted to (almost) the opposite end of the spectrum. 2023 is shaping up to be the year of the kitten heel. Make no mistake stilettos—from boots to revenge pumps ala Saint Laurent—are still getting plenty of play, but it just might be time to revisit easy-on-the-feet heels.

Much of this shift is due in part to the increasing popularity of vintage. Cult items of yesteryear like Marc Jacob’s Stam bag and Gucci’s Horsebit heels are coming back into the fold, and with it a slew of Gen-Z fans eager to get a piece of fashion history. However sourcing these early aughts icons is sometimes easier said than done, and an array of brands have stepped in to meet the demand. Muled sandals are popping up everywhere, from the high street to the runway. Part of its appeal may lie in its versatility and ease: there are no straps to fuss with, no laces to tie, simply slip them on and go. It also helps that its a shoe that really styles well with any outfit. If you too are ready to jump on the train, below I’ve assembled 20+ pairs to get you started.

    [ad_1]

Sorry, but what even is a comfortable shoe? For so long, I kind of just assumed that in order to walk around all day and not want to rip my shoes off the moment I walked through the door, it was a given that I had to wear something a little clunky (or else sneakers). I blindly accepted that comfortable shoes had to sacrifice style and looking on-trend, which just simply isn’t the case as you’re about to find out. Had I known about the following shoe brands earlier, I could have saved myself some serious time, money, and blisters (so many blisters).

Once I realized that there’s actually a wealth of shoes that are just as comfortable as they are cool, it was like I won the lottery, and now I go around telling anyone who will listen about my findings. Now that we’re in the midst of warmer days, it’s time to hone in on one particular shoe style that’s left a room divided: the Birkenstock.

I Am 99.9% Certain These Will Be the Most Popular Sandals This Summer

    [ad_1]

Over the past 18 months, we have seen a shift towards practicality in fashion, and this is seen most acutely with footwear. We need our shoes to be able to take us on countless laps of the park without causing us any trouble, so high heels have been universally retired. Fashion brands have for several seasons been bringing us sturdy, responsible shoes—the kind of styles that you’d try to run away from when finding shoes at Clarks in sixth grade. Think T-bar loafers, chunky lace-ups, and fisherman sandals.

The Row and Gabriella Hearst both are adored for their discreet and quiet take on luxury fashion, and although both tend to shy away from anything too flashy or trend-driven, they both have a habit of dictating the silhouettes that we’ll be gravitating towards. Both have created beautiful caged leather sandals in both ivory and black, making the humble fisherman sandal the most sought-after sandal for this summer. Like Tevas, their appeal is that they are practical walking shoes and will go with almost any summer outfit.

The styles by The Row and Gabriella Hearst have been yoyo-ing in and out of stock, however, it is a style that is slowly trickling into the high street too. Zara, always quick to respond to a cult item, has created several fisherman sandals for $70.

Keep scrolling for proof that they really do look amazing with all summer outfits, and then shop our edit of the best pairs.

There were a handful of sandal trends that dominated our feeds last spring and summer, from tricky-toe straps to the bedazzled heels we saw grace the feet of just about every fashion person. As we approach open-toe season once again, there’s another cool-girl style to keep on your radar, one that’s been trending for the last couple of years and shows no signs of slowing down: chunky-sole sandals. These lean more into the “ugly” footwear category and are arguably more comfortable than their stiletto-heeled counterparts—something that anyone who isn’t particularly fond of towering heels can appreciate.

Sandal season may seem like a distant dream for some of us. It’s currently snowing outside of my NYC apartment as I type this, but the fact is that spring will be here again before we know it. I like to get my seasonal shopping done ahead of time, so I went ahead and rounded up the 24 best pairs of chunky-sole sandals that are guaranteed to sell out by March. I Live in NYC and Walk at Least 5 Miles a Day—These Sandals Make That Possible

    [ad_1]

Despite having grown up in Chicago before moving to New York, I actually really love warm weather. Summer is, without a doubt, my season. And while lounging in the sun, eating outside, and not having to layer are all viable reasons for my loving it so much, there are but two things that make summer the all-time greatest: walking everywhere and wearing sandals

Of course, walking up to 20,000 steps a day can’t be done in just any shoes. For that, you need a pair with cushioning, soft straps that won’t pinch, and heels (yes, I walk in heels) that are made with support in mind. After a fair share of trial and error, I’ve discovered a handful of brands that successfully do all three—and then some.

I Know It Hurts, But These 6 Sandals Have Got to Go—6 I’m Investing in Instead

    [ad_1]

Even though the weather outside might not indicate the impending arrival of spring (at least not where I’m located in New York City), warmer temperatures are, indeed, on the horizon. This, to me, means one thing: It’s time to start thinking about ways to transition my winter wardrobe into a spring one without my closet finally taking over the last few square feet left in my SoHo apartment. It’s not an easy job, but it’s one I look forward to every year. And the first sartorial genre on my agenda is sandals—also known as the footwear staple I’ll wear most in the months ahead.

Last season, the sandal space was dominated by pillow-like thongs, pastel slides, and every fashion girl’s favorite style, fisherman sandals. But like with most other trends of late, these are already starting to feel stale after seeing them on everyone everywhere—from Positano, Italy to my own backyard (aka the corner seat at Fanelli Cafe, where you can stylish people watch as shoppers exit Prada).

To replace them in my wardrobe, I’ve come up with a list of worthwhile replacements that are fresh for 2023. Scroll down to find out which sandal styles I’ll prioritize and which I won’t next season.
