A public memorial service Friday will honor San Jose Police Department community service officer Long Tham Pham, who was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver earlier this month.

The service for Pham, 34, takes place at SAP Center in San Jose starting at 11 a.m., according to SJPD. The department is planning processions to and from the venue.

On Aug. 3, Pham and another community service officer were conducting traffic control on Monterey Road in South San Jose when a driver hit both of them, killing Pham and injuring the other CSO, identified as Veronica Baer.

Members of the community came together to hold a vigil on Thursday for a San Jose community service officer who was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver earlier in the month.

Pham died at the scene, and Baer was taken to a hospital, where she remained for days in critical but stable condition.

Police arrested 44-year-old Juan Palacios of Morgan Hill on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter. Palacios has previous DUI charges on his record, police said.

Pham, who became a community service officer in October 2022, is the first CSO in the department’s history to be killed in the line of duty, SJPD said.

Cisco cuts thousands of jobs, 7% of workforce, as it shifts focus to AI, cybersecurity

    [ad_1]

Cisco Systems is planning to lay off 7% of its employees, its second round of job cuts this year, as the company shifts its focus to more rapidly growing areas in technology, such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

The company based in San Jose, California, did not specify the number of jobs it is cutting. It had 84,900 employees as of July 2023. Based on that figure, the number of jobs cut would be about 5,900. In February, Cisco announced it would cut about 4,000 jobs.

The networking equipment maker said in June that it would invest $1 billion in tech startups like Cohere, Mistral and Scale to develop reliable AI products. It recently also announced a partnership with Nvidia to develop infrastructure for AI systems.

Cisco’s layoffs come just two weeks after chipmaker Intel Corp. announced it would cut about 15,000 jobs as it tries to turn its business around to compete with more successful rivals like Nvidia and AMD. Intel’s quarterly earnings report disappointed investors and its stock took a nosedive following the announcement. In contrast, Cisco’s shares were up about 6% after-hours on Wednesday.

In a foray into cybersecurity, Cisco launched a cybersecurity readiness index back in March to help businesses measure their resiliency against attacks.

Cisco Systems Inc. said Wednesday it earned $2.16 billion, or 54 cents per share, in its fiscal fourth quarter that ended on July 27, down 45% from $3.96 billion, or 97 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. Excluding special items, its adjusted earnings were 87 cents per share in the latest quarter.

Revenue fell 10% to $13.64 billion from $15.2 billion.

Analysts, on average, were expecting adjusted earnings of 85 cents per share on revenue of $13.54 billion, according to a poll by FactSet.

For the current quarter, Cisco is forecasting adjusted earnings of 86 cents to 88 cents per share on revenue of $13.65 billion to $13.85 billion. Analysts are expecting earnings of 85 cents per share on revenue of $13.74 billion.

Edward Jones analyst David Heger said Cisco is starting to see demand recover after it slowed over the past few quarters, noting that product orders were up 6% even when excluding those from its recent acquisition of cybersecurity firm Splunk.

He added that “the restructuring will help offset the earnings impact from interest expenses associated with financing the Splunk acquisition and will rationalize combined workforces.”

Vegetation fire burns next to Highway 280 in San Jose

    [ad_1]

A fire burned vegetation next to Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Fire crews put out a grass fire along Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose, August 7, 2024.

    KPIX

The San Jose Fire Department said on social media at about 1:30 p.m. that the fire was near 280 and McLauglin Avenue. It had burned three to four acres with a moderate rate of spread, the department said.

The fire burned west of McLaughlin Avenue along the Five Wounds Trail north of Coyote Creek close to a business park but it appeared no businesses were threatened.

Fire trucks blocked two right lanes of southbound Highway 280 during the firefight.

It was not immediately known how the fire started. Flames were seen burning at at least one homeless encampment in the area.

This is a breaking news update. More information to be added as available.

Santana Row to start charging for parking

    [ad_1]

Changes are coming to Santana Row’s parking rules. Starting this week, visitors and employees will have to pay for parking after two free hours at the San Jose outdoor mall.

There are signs that have been put up at the garages. After two hours, customers will have to pay $2 per hour with a maximum daily rate of $10.

“I think it’s not very pleasant because a lot of the times, I’m going to Valley fair just to try to avoid the little fees. I’m not very happy about it,” said San Jose resident Keirah Chen.

Santana Row’s new parking rules are similar to what the nearby Westfield Valley Fair mall has been doing. San Jose resident Stella Zhou used to work at Valley Fair and would have to pay for parking.

“You’re already kind of getting paid minimum wage at most of the shops there and having to pay parking on top of that, it’s not really fun,” she said.

The senior director of marketing at Santana Row said employees can get a monthly parking pass for $20 or pay a daily rate of $2.

In an email, Santana Row said the change is due to “the increased number of Valley Fair employees and customers using our parking spaces, by regulating parking, we ensure that our guests can conveniently find parking spaces.”

Also, one outdoor parking lot is now only for Santana Row employee. In some of the garages, there will be signs that say paid parking starts Tuesday, but the senior marketing director says they don’t have the official day just yet, but it will begin this week.

  • Missing 3-year-old Fremont girl found dead at San Jose recycling facility

Missing 3-year-old Fremont girl found dead at San Jose recycling facility

    [ad_1]

FREMONT — The case of a missing child in Fremont now has a tragic ending.  Police say the body of a three-year-old girl was discovered at a dump site in San Jose just hours after her father was found dead in San Francisco. There isn’t a lot of information being released about the case of missing Ellie Lorenzo but what there is is all bad.

Late Friday night, Fremont police put out an urgent call for help.  A man had been found dead in San Francisco and his three-year-old daughter who had been in his custody was nowhere to be found.

“The mother of the three-year-old girl called us, asking if we can check on her welfare at her father’s apartment, located here in Fremont,” said Fremont Police Sgt. Kim McDonald at a late night news conference. “The mother of the child got news that the father was deceased in San Francisco and the child was not with him at that time. The Fremont police department went to his apartment in Fremont and the child was not located there.”

Jared Lorenzo allegedly lived in a second-story unit at the Casa Arroyo Apartments in Fremont. In LinkedIn photos, he can be seen holding his young daughter Ellie.  No details were released about how Jared died but police were desperate to locate Ellie as quickly as possible.

“Yeah, this is not a normal sort of call,” said Sgt. McDonald. “It’s terrifying, it’s frightening for certainly the family, for all of us in law enforcement. I mean, we’re doing — we’re going to be here late trying to locate this missing child.”

Later in the day, Fremont police issued a sad notice on social media, saying: “It is with a heavy heart we report this morning, Saturday, July 13, 2024, we were contacted by San Jose Police Department regarding the investigation into Ellie Lorenzo. Tragically, a juvenile female resembling Ellie was located deceased in their city.”

The only details released were that Ellie’s body was found at one of the city’s recycling facilities. There was no information offered about how she died but, back at Jared’s apartment complex, the fear among neighbors was that her father may have been involved.

“I got more information from a gentleman who was walking away from the police officers and he was the one who kind of filled me in on what was happening,” said complex resident Michael Vasquez. “Heartbroken, angry. No … I … there’s really no good way to describe it, other than just all these negative emotions.”

At about 4 p.m. Saturday, a line of official cars began entering the complex. Police were seen in Lorenzo’s apartment, presumedly searching for clues about how the two deaths may be connected. San Jose and Fremont police will be investigating the discovery of the child’s body. At this point, San Francisco police are coordinating the investigation of Jared Lorenzo’s death.

Firefighters warn of potential risk firework pose this July Fourth

    [ad_1]

Firefighters are bracing themselves for a busy day ahead of the Fourth of July. But fire crews also have a warning for those wanting to partake in fireworks.

Fire crews said they are already spread thin as some are fighting fires across the state, but the added mix of potential illegal fireworks and hot temperatures makes it dangerous.

“We want the public to know that it is not permissible to use illegal fireworks,” said Chelsea Burkett, a public information officer for Cal Fire of Santa Clara. “We are fully staffed and we’re working to continue buffering those numbers and bring in more personnel. [But] we have resources that got sent out to support some of the other fires that are happening and because of that we bring in more resources in.”

In Santa Clara County, Gilroy is the only city that permist the use of so-called Safe and Sane Fireworks.

In San Jose, all fireworks are illegal. Inviidulas caught lighting or owning fireworks can face fines.

Spectators are also subject to fines.

Burkett said it is best to leave the firworks in the hands of professionals.

“Theres a lot of safety practices that are put in before those shows are even allowed to start,” she said.

According to Cal Fire, due to triple digit heat and dry vegetation one spark could have dangerous consequences.

South Bay residents, fire crews bracing for high temperatures

    [ad_1]

The heat is on in the South Bay with temperatures expected to exceed 100 degrees over the next few days, and people are already finding creative ways to beat the high temperatures.

Some people are beating the heat with a splash through the fountains in downtown San Jose

“It’s always nice and cool in the water, and you know we’ve got shade over here under the trees too,” said Javier Cascaneda.

KPIX First Alert Weather: Current conditions, alerts, maps for your area

Families flocked to the fountains Monday as temperatures hit the 90s.

And this is just the beginning, the heat is expected to top 100 degrees over the next few days.

“I have a pool at my apartment so probably swim there. We’ll maybe go to the beach,” said Jeneva Alvarez and Luis Ponce.

That seemed to be a common theme, many people told KPIX they’re already making plans to head out of town towards someplace a little cooler.

“Go to the Ocean. Yeah, Half Moon Bay or maybe Santa Cruz,” said Paul Padilla and Jennifer Liu.

But while some are escaping to cooler temperatures, first responders back are preparing for what could be a dangerous combination, a heat wave and the Fourth of July.

San Jose Police posted on social media reminding people that all fireworks are illegal in the city and can be very dangerous in conditions like this.

People said they understand that but still expect to see some people breaking the rules.

“I feel like there’s always more fireworks every year and just about the same amount of fires. But there’s not much that I think is going to change honestly. It’s just going to be keep on going unless we get more rain hopefully,” said Javier Cascaneda

Of course, the hope, especially in conditions like the ones expected this week, is that people will be extra careful celebrating the holiday this year.

7 arrested for vandalizing San Jose police car, injuring officer during sideshow

    [ad_1]

San Jose police on Monday announced the arrests of seven people believed to be involved in vandalizing a patrol car and injuring an officer during a recent sideshow.

The incident happened in June as the officer was responding to reports of an injured person at an illegal sideshow.

Video showed more than a half-dozen people – some wearing masks – pounding on the patrol car as the officer sat inside.

Among those arrested was 20-year-old Matthew Nolan of San Mateo, the man prosecutors say was seen kicking in the patrol car’s windshield and injuring the officer.

“If you attack a San Jose police officer attempting to help an injured person so you can become famous on TikTok, it’s possible you may escape consequences for hours or days, but be assured we will find you and we will arrest you,” acting San Jose police Chief Paul Joseph said.

The arrests also included one of the sideshow drivers and a juvenile. The suspects are from a variety of cities, such as Salinas, San Francisco and even Yucca, Arizona. All now face felony charges.

“These defendants wanted to post something online, to be part of something viral and edgy,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “They wanted attention. They got it.”

“We’re sending a clear message that whether you live here or cross city, county or state lines to commit a crime, we will find you and hold you accountable,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan added.

Right now, San Jose can impound a car involved in a sideshow for 30 days. Police can also cite someone just for watching the illegal shows.

Police said detectives are now using technology to help identify those involved in a sideshow and make arrests days or weeks later after analyzing all the evidence.

Detectives said they’re also working on a regionwide effort with the hopes of one day forming a Bay Area task force to better combat the problem.

“If they could attack a uniformed officer like this, what could they do to everyone else?” Joseph said.

CaliBunga Waterpark in San Jose delays opening to July 4

    [ad_1]

CaliBunga Waterpark is delaying its opening to Thursday, July 4.

The popular South Bay destination, formerly known as Raging Waters, said some attractions would not open in time for this weekend’s original opening date.

“Unfortunately yesterday afternoon we had some unexpected challenges with some electrical issues,” General Manager Mel Sells said in a video posted to social media on Friday. “This caused several of our attractions not to be able to open this weekend.”

Sells said pushing the opening date back is devastating.

“We do apologize for the unforeseen circumstances it has caused us not to be able to open on time and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” Sells said. “I know this isn’t the news that you wanted to hear or that we would want to share today, but we wanted to let you know as soon as possible.”

Crews will be working to fix the impacted attractions.

“We are looking forward to welcoming guests back to the park on Thursday when we’re able to provide a safe and quality experience,” Sells said.

At the end of summer 2023, Raging Waters unexpectedly announced it was not renewing its lease and closing for good because of low turnout.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) reopened Capitol Light Rail Station in San Jose early Tuesday morning, hours after a train partially derailed in the area.

The VTA said in a statement that crews were able to repair the affected track at the Capitol Station where a light rail car slipped off the tracks around 12:40 p.m. Monday while attempting to switch directions.

Although Capitol Station is again operating, the VTA said that a bus bridge is still in effect between Santa Teresa Station and the reopened stop until July 1 due to “previously scheduled state of good repair work.”

“When the derailment happened, the bus bridge was extended to Curtner, but Capitol is now open for train service,” the transportation authority said.

  • San Jose family devastated after daughter drowns in creek

San Jose family devastated after daughter drowns in creek

    [ad_1]

A grieving San Jose family is demanding answers after their 11-year-old daughter drowned in an East Bay creek.

Danna Niño drowned at the Niles Staging Area of Alameda Creek in Fremont on Memorial Day.

Danna dove in the water, but she never came back up. The family said a whirlpool is what sucked her in.

The fire department said police officers dove in, trying to rescue Danna, but they couldn’t get to her.

There are signs all over the creek bed warning people not to go into the waterway. But Danna’s family said the area was packed a week ago with people using a large hole in the fence to go enjoy the water.

Danna’s mother said there should be floating markers in the water to warn people about the danger.

NBC Bay Area contacted the East Bay Regional Park District to talk about the drowning and Alameda County to discuss the possible reasons for a whirlpool in the area where Danna went under but did not immediately hear back.

The family said they want to prevent another tragedy, so they returned to the area on Sunday to warn families.

  • 2 separate mountain lion sightings reported in San Jose

2 separate mountain lion sightings reported in San Jose

    [ad_1]

Two separate mountain lion sightings were reported in San Jose in the last few days.

The most recent sighting was reported at around 10 p.m. Friday near 24th and Santa Clara streets.

The incident was caught on a home surveillance video. The video showed the mountain lion walking by a truck with a small dog barking at it. Another video showed the mountain lion on a roof.

A nearby business owner told NBC Bay Area Saturday that she’s surprised to hear about a mountain lion roaming close to downtown.

“I thought it wasn’t real. We’ve been here over 30 years, almost 40 and I’ve never heard of a mountain lion in the area,” she said. “You know, this close to downtown, this close to the neighborhood.”

The San Jose Police Department said that they haven’t received any reports about a mountain lion.

The San Jose Animal Care and Control confirmed to NBC Bay Area that earlier Saturday, someone sent them a surveillance video, showing the animal in the area on Friday. They added that they reported the sighting to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife did not respond to NBC Bay Area’s request for comment on Saturday.

Another mountain lion sighting was reported Thursday in the area of Oakland Road And Murphy Avenue in San Jose. It’s not known at this time if it’s the same mountain lion from Friday.

The person who posted the pictures on Reddit said they saw the animal Thursday afternoon and reported it to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Earlier this week, a pair of mountain lion sightings were reported in two separate Milpitas neighborhoods. It’s not known if all incidents were related.

The two left lanes were closed indefinitely as hazmat crews responded to clean up the spill and the CHP investigated the crash.

No other details were immediately available.

  • Shootout between San Jose police, suspect leaves nearby residents shaken

Shootout between San Jose police, suspect leaves nearby residents shaken

    [ad_1]

SAN JOSE — A shootout between San Jose police and a suspect left residents in the area shaken by the violence.

One resident was just opening her food truck this morning when she started hearing details about a shootout between police and a suspect on Sunday afternoon.

“That’s not right. It’s scary because I’ve never heard gunshots or incidents like this around here,” said Alejandra Cardona, who works near the scene.

San Jose police released video footage showing a man firing a gun from a van in the middle of the day on Kollmar Drive. Police responded to a 911 call reporting the incident.

The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Ricardo Villarreal, a felon in possession of a firearm. Villarreal also blocked another resident’s access to the parking lot and brandished a firearm at them.

“The swift response from the officers likely saved the lives of many families in the apartment complex and the neighborhood, and the circumstances surrounding how and why a felon prohibited from having a firearm went on a shooting spree will take some time to understand and investigate,” said Interim Chief of Police Paul Joseph.

Another neighbor, Luis Miguel Sanchez, lives in the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.

“I wasn’t here. I arrived later, and everything was already closed off. They almost didn’t let me in, but then the police let me in through this other side. But honestly, it’s terrifying,” Sanchez recounted.

After fleeing the initial scene, Villarreal continued to shoot at responding officers until he was eventually struck and apprehended. Interim Chief Joseph emphasized that Villarreal, being a felon, should not have had a firearm. This incident marks the third officer-involved shooting in San Jose this year.

Villarreal is in critical condition after the shootout. Meanwhile, fear is real for residents like Alejandra and Luis Miguel, who have two young children.

“Well, to get into the apartment, all the doors are locked, but out here, it’s way more complicated,” Sanchez added, highlighting the heightened concern among local residents.
