Inside the conversation that gave the SJ Earthquakes their biggest win of the season

SANTA CLARA – San Jose Earthquakes players were visibly perturbed as they made their way to the sidelines after the referee blew the full-time whistle to signal that penalty kicks were up next.

With the Leagues Cup match against Chivas extended into a shootout after the Mexican team scored late in stoppage time to pull even 1-1 – yet another gut-punch in a season filled with them for the Quakes – San Jose players reacted in a variety of ways.

A few appeared to argue fruitlessly with one of the other officials, some gestured and others looked despondent as they shuffled off the pitch at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday night.

“There were a lot of emotions after that, and a lot of frustration with our team,” Earthquakes coach Ian Russell said. “I had to bring them together and tell them that everybody needed to calm down.”

So when he got them all together, Russell didn’t mince his words.

“We’ve played a great game,” he told his team, before adding, “But we need to calm down.”

Calmness ultimately turned to a San Jose celebration as the Earthquakes, who are dead last in the Major League Soccer standings, bounced back to win the shootout 4-3 in a Leagues Cup opener.

Before the triumphant finish, San Jose players had good reason to be irate.

After leading for over 90 minutes thanks to an early Jeremy Ebobisse goal and stout defense, Chivas thrilled most in the tournament-record crowd of 50,675 – who had taken over the South Bay stadium – and devastated the Earthquakes when Roberto Alvarado equalized in the 98th minute.

Chivas had spent the previous 20 minutes hammering away at San Jose’s defense, but gritty keeper Daniel had fought through bumps and aerial fouls by the opponents to keep a clean sheet.

    Turns out, he wasn’t superhuman.

Daniel could only watch as his defense conceded approximately 30 seconds before stoppage time ran out.

In a season that has seen the Earthquakes lose 19 games, tie two more and win only four times in the MLS season, the late-game debacle was just another miserable chapter in the awful season.

Different competition, same sad result, right?

  • Oakland fans send strong message to John Fisher at Roots-Quakes game

Oakland fans send strong message to John Fisher at Roots-Quakes game

SAN JOSE – The Oakland Roots’ boisterous supporters section in the northeast corner of PayPal Park grew momentarily quiet during the 12th minute, their chants and drums going silent.

That brief hush at the US Open Cup soccer game between visiting Roots and the host San Jose Earthquakes was quickly replaced by a refrain baseball fans in Oakland have become well-acquainted with.

“Sell the team! Sell the team! Sell the team!” echoed through the half-full stadium on Tuesday evening, the demand to Earthquakes and A’s owner John Fisher soon replaced by another three-word chant that included an expletive.

The Roots lost 1-0 on a late goal by the Quakes, but the loud Oakland fans made their point.

Ruben Ortiz wore a brightly-colored “SELL” shirt with a neon-green “SELL” flag wrapped around his neck like a cape as he joined in the chants to get Fisher to sell the A’s before they relocate to Sacramento next season.

An A’s fan since 1996, Ortiz counted watching Josh Donaldson’s walk-off home run against the Tigers in 2014 as his favorite memory at the Coliseum.

That is the kind of experience that Ortiz believes Fisher is denying both A’s and Earthquakes fans as owner.

Ortiz had never been to a pro soccer match before, but he was moved by the opportunity to protest Fisher while supporting his local team.

“What would be a better first game than to go and show that it’s not just Oakland that deserves better, but that San Jose also deserves better ownership than John Fisher,” Ortiz asked rhetorically.

Some Oakland A’s fans have decided to boycott the team, not wanting to give the notoriously penny-pinching owner their money.

Jorge Leon is the founder of the Oakland 68s, a fan group that bused supporters down from The Town to San Jose. He’s not a fan of Fisher – to say the least – but he still bought a ticket to cheer on a team that the 68s have become aligned with.

“We see this as supporting our Oakland Roots,” Jorge Leon said in a text message to the Bay Area News Group on Monday.
