  • Sony Re-Releasing Salma Hayek-Debut Pic ‘Midaq Alley’ Which Closes San Sebastian’s Classics Section (EXCLUSIVE)

    [ad_1]

Midaq Alley” (“El Callejón de los Milagros”), the Jorge Fons 1995 gem that launched Salma Hayek’s career, is being re-released by Sony Pictures across Mexico and Latin America, thanks to an agreement between Sony Pictures International Productions and its producer, Alameda Films.

News comes after Spain’s San Sebastian Film Fest announced that it would close the festival’s Classics (Klasikoak) section.

The newly restored 4K version celebrates the 30th anniversary of the iconic film, considered one of the most consequential Mexican films of all time. It won a raft of awards worldwide and represented Mexico at the 68th Academy Awards.

Based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz, with a screenplay by Vicente Leñero, the film was produced by the legendary Alfredo Ripstein, whose Alameda Films is now run by his grandson, Daniel Birman Ripstein.

Set in a downtown Mexico City backstreet whose inhabitants’ lives are closely interwoven, the film is split into four clear parts. The first three are named after main characters, and the last one brings the story to an end. Each part begins at the same moment, showing the same game of dominoes, and covers the same time period, but from a different character’s point of view.

“Bringing ‘Midaq Alley’ back to theaters with the support of Sony is a testament to the film’s enduring impact and cultural importance,” said Birman Ripstein, adding: “This new release will allow a new generation of audiences to discover this magical film in a way it has never been seen before.” Restoring the classic to its new restored version took four years, he revealed.

“We are delighted to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime milestone cinematic celebration,” said Philip Alexander, VP and general manager of Sony Pictures Releasing México.

Aside from being the screen debut of Salma Hayek, “Midaq Alley” features a notable ensemble cast of lauded Mexican actors that include Bruno Bichir (“Ozark”) Daniel Giménez Cacho (“Zama”), Juan Manuel Bernal (“Monarch”), Ernesto Gómez Cruz (“The Crime of Father Amaro”), María Rojo (“Valentine’s Wedding”), Tiaré Scanda (“No Man’s Land”) and Margarita Sanz (“Frida”).

The theatrical run of “Midaq Alley” is slated to kick off on Oct. 23 with Sony handling distribution across Mexico and Latin America.

The 73rd San Sebastian Film Festival runs over Sept. 19 -27.

  • Salma Hayek Pinault, Colman Domingo, Demi Moore, Jessica Chastain and More Raise a Record-Breaking $4.5 Million as Cohosts of the Kering Foundation Caring for Women Dinner

    [ad_1]

“You empower women and families not to survive, but to thrive. And you pick the organizations that incite them to dream and give them the tools to make their dreams come true,” Salma Hayek Pinault told Vanity Fair at the fourth annual Kering Foundation Caring for Women Dinner on Thursday.

Hayek Pinault served as cohost for the annual event alongside Colman Domingo, Demi Moore, Jessica Chastain, Julianne Moore, Dolores Huerta, Jeff Koons, and her husband, François-Henri Pinault. Held at The Pool on Park Avenue, the event raised a record $4.5 million for organizations committed to ending gender-based violence and empowering women and girls globally. Some 200 guests from across creative disciplines gathered in the candlelit space where stars like Lenny Kravitz and keynote speaker Diane Von Furstenberg were spotted taking selfies. Baz Luhrmann could be seen adjusting the train of Lauren Sánchez’s dress as she entered the room with her husband, Jeff Bezos. Dakota Johnson, who turned heads in a sheer Gucci gown, took a seat next to Kirsten Dunst to chat, while other guests like Seth Meyers, Linda Evangelista, Adrien Brody, and Georgina Chapman made their way to their seats as the lights began to dim.

“It’s about creating a sense of community,” said Hayek Pinault. “Everybody is here to participate in trying to figure out better ways to grow together.” As she spoke on the importance of collaboration and empowerment, she spotted her fellow cohost and personal hero Dolores Huerta, the trailblazing labor activist and pioneer of the Chicano civil rights movement. As they embraced, Hayek Pinault became visibly emotional, wiping tears away as she expressed her admiration, taking out her phone to get a photo together.

Dinner guest and longtime women’s rights advocate Mariska Hargitay also became emotional when speaking on the matter, holding back tears as she cited the resilience of the human spirit in the fight for equality. “Progress looks like not giving up in a world where people are so beat down and so afraid right now, like a huge tank is coming to steamroll everyone,” she told Vanity Fair. “It’s so important not to be anesthetized and to be beaten down by fear and by everything that’s coming at us, and to keep the fight going.”

Although the actress stunned on the cover in a green bikini, she told the the “Today” show in May, “I said yes and then when it was time to do it, I tried to back out.” She went on to explain that she always struggles with finding bathing suits that fit her and that she had a “very bad case of impostor syndrome.”

I still can’t believe it,” Hayek added. “I remember when I was young and hot, I used to look at this magazine. I wanted to see who was the new gorgeous model, the new girl of the moment. And it never crossed my mind that I could be on that cover because they didn’t look like me. My body’s not necessarily the model type and I never thought that was a possibility. And for it to happen when I’m 58? It’s really shocking.”

Hayek went on to say that if someone had told her years ago that she would be asked to appear on the cover of the magazine at 58 years old, she “would have sent them to the madhouse,” but is happy to see that the world is changing.

Salma Hayek impresses with stunning photo alongside lookalike mom from 80th birthday

    [ad_1]

Salma Hayek delighted her fans with a touching tribute to her mother, Diana Jiménez Medina, on her 80th birthday. The actress shared a beautiful photo of herself with her mother, highlighting their striking resemblance.

“Happy 80th birthday, Mom, and happy 77th birthday, Aunt Charo! I love you both very much. Mom, each year I celebrate your life with more love and gratitude,” she captioned the post. Fans were quick to comment on how much the two look alike, with one admirer noting, “Now we know where Salma got her looks!”

Her mother is a talented opera singer and in a heartfelt interview with the OWN network, Salma opened up about her mother’s passion for singing. “I love my mom because she loves to sing and she has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard,” she shared, adding, “She sings like an angel.” Growing up with an opera singer mother meant that Salma was constantly surrounded by music.

“Many times, it embarrassed me, but my mother taught me that whenever she felt like singing, it didn’t matter what anyone else thought — including me,” she revealed. “She was just gonna sing and feel free with her voice.”

Salma elaborated on her mother’s vibrant personality in a 2014 interview, recounting how her mother would sing operatically even when Salma’s friends were around.

“My friends would come to the house, and she’d be like, makes operatic sounds. And you would ask her, ‘Can I go to the movies?’ and she’d answer singing, in front of your friends. So that was embarrassing.”

But it wasn’t just at home; Diana would often showcase her talents in public. “Somebody would ask, ‘Oh, why don’t you sing?’ … and she’d just sing a song in a restaurant or something — but really loud. She’s an opera singer, so it’s not, like, intimate; the whole restaurant would be clapping, standing up, ovation and stuff. And when you are a teenager, that can be embarrassing. Now, I appreciate it, but back then, it was embarrassing,” Salma confessed.

As she has grown older, Salma’s perspective on her mother’s behavior has changed. “I love her for being brave and for having such an important voice in my life,” she told OWN.

Salma’s father, Sami, has also been a crucial figure in her life, especially in supporting her acting career. When Salma decided to drop out of college to focus on acting, Sami initially reacted strongly. However, he eventually supported her decision.

“He said, ‘Okay, okay. We’re gonna do the acting classes.’ And I never went back to college,” Salma recalled in an interview with CBS News in 2018. “And he’s so proud of me. Nobody’s more proud than him.”

Sami and Diana have two children, with Salma being the elder, born on September 2, 1966. She has a younger brother, Sami Hayek, who is a successful furniture designer.

Reflecting on her childhood, Salma told The Guardian in 2013, “I was privileged to grow up in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, with my parents and my younger brother, Sami. It was a close community, we lived near the ocean and we would be outside all the time with the neighbors’ kids, running free, playing football on the streets and at the beach.”

Salma shared a heartfelt tribute to her brother on social media for World Siblings Day. “Sami, you’ve been a blessing in my life… even though I’m sure I decorate yours with chaos,” she wrote, highlighting their close bond.

  • Gucci hosts star-studded cruise collection fashion show in London’s Tate Modern

Gucci hosts star-studded cruise collection fashion show in London’s Tate Modern

    [ad_1]

LONDON – For one night only, the utilitarian, concrete basement of London’s Tate Modern museum was transformed into a lush green jungle Monday — and it was the hottest fashion ticket in town.

Luxury Italian fashion house Gucci hosted its star-studded cruise collection catwalk at the Thames-side modern art museum, showing a series of delicate sheer outfits, relaxed denim and daywear, all adorned with the brand’s coveted leather bags and other accessories with the double-G logo.

Actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott and singers Dua Lipa and Solange Knowles were among celebrities perched on the front row. Also in attendance were Salma Hayek and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who is chair and CEO of Kering, Gucci’s parent company.

The big-budget event displayed the first cruise collection by Sabato De Sarno, who was named Gucci’s creative director last year and debuted his womenswear designs in September.

Gucci normally stages its shows in Milan, but like other fashion powerhouses it chooses locations around the world to show off its cruise collections — the shows in between the main spring and autumn displays.

On Monday, models meandered down a runway that wound its way around hundreds of ferns, overhanging plants and mossy paths, the mass of green a contrast to the grey, industrial show space. De Sarno said that contrast extends to his latest designs, which paired luxurious evening looks and floral embroidery with casual jackets and slouchy denim.

And what of the footwear? Comfort comes first, with all outfits, even the most glamorous evening gowns, paired with Mary Jane shoes, ballet flats or platform loafers worn with little white socks.

“Rigor and extravagance, strength in delicacy, Englishness with an Italian accent,” the show notes read.

De Sarno featured a few checked jackets in a nod to British style, though some other designs were a much more subtle tribute. Dresses and coats covered with squares made of a shimmering bead fringe were a reference to Scottish plaids.

The fashion house has a little-known historical link to the U.K. Its founder, Guccio Gucci, had a stint working as a bellhop in the Savoy, the luxury London hotel, more than a century ago.

The brand says Guccio took inspiration from that experience when he opened his first store in Florence in 1921 to sell luggage. The rest, as they say, is history.

  • Salma Hayek just wore the most elegant colour combination

Salma Hayek just wore the most elegant colour combination

    [ad_1]

Salma Hayek and the colour red were basically made for one another, as proven by her most recent look.

In an appearance alongside her husband Francois-Henri Pinault, the actor opted for an elegant shade of red that has long been associated with silent luxury: burgundy. Wearing the deep dark red-purplish colour, one of the best things about the Bordeaux shade she chose is that it’s easy to elevate with neutrals or pastels.

Looking every bit elegant in her long burgundy A-line dress, the actor was attending a state dinner at the Élysée Palace in Paris. With a V-neck and long sleeves, the chiffon dress is effortlessly stylish and an ideal go-to for a chic look even during warmer summer months.

Angled shoulder detailing provide a powerful structure conveying elegance and strength, while we’re completely in love with the movement of the dress itself. Truly, a winning combination.

But the success of this look isn’t just in the dress’s beautiful colour and structuring, though also thanks to her carefully curated silver jewellery which ties the entire outfit together to give a classic overall effect.

Matching her earrings, necklace and rings to one another, Hayek rounded off the stunning look with a metallic clutch and platform heels.

Salma Hayek Pinault’s Kering Foundation Dinner Gala Draws Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, and Leonardo DiCaprio

    [ad_1]

Salma Hayek Pinault may be best known as an actor, but she’s also a passionate activist helping women affected by abuse. For the past 15 years, she has worked with her husband, François-Henri Pinault, the chairman and CEO of the luxury group Kering, which owns Gucci, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, and other brands, on multiple initiatives to end gender-based violence through their Kering Foundation.

On Tuesday night at the Pool in New York, Hayek Pinault helmed the Kering Foundation’s second annual Caring for Women Dinner, an ultraglamorous, black-tie affair with Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Kidman, Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, Zoë Kravitz, and Channing Tatum all in attendance. The high-wattage guests aided Hayek Pinault in raising funds for nongovernmental organizations that work to support abused women.

“I have been fighting for women’s rights and domestic violence for over 30 years because it’s about dignity. It is so important to speak out when a woman is being abused because in fighting for women, we are fighting for humanity,” Hayek Pinault told Vanity Fair. “Why domestic violence? Do I come from domestic violence? No. I never experienced domestic violence at home. I want to help because I want to help empower women and make a contribution in a world where I want to be a part of. I did it when you couldn’t get any support. So it means a lot even though we are still fighting, and sometimes it goes up and down, but now I don’t feel as alone as I did that many years ago. So it’s important to keep that fight going.”

Hayek Pinault’s advocacy, which has taken her around the world, has had a positive impact on the lives of others as well as on her own outlook. “I’ve done a lot of fieldwork so when you see and experience some of the different challenges that are truly only imaginable, you come back and see your problems, then you go, ‘Okay. What are you going to do about it?’” she said. “Go travel the world. See other people. Be with other people who are in worse situations and things fall into perspective.”

While her swim bottom isn’t visible, the blue-and-cream fringed skirt retails for $695 online, and is part of a two-piece resort set made for the beach. Hayek appeared effortless as ever, seemingly make-up-free, with her curly brown hair down and parted at the center. The sunlight peered in through the windows behind her, providing natural light for the portrait that she posted on Instagram. Her lips appeared to be painted a soft pink, and her nails boasted a white manicure. Hayek positioned her skirt low on the hips to draw attention to her waistline, while her plunging halter put her cleavage on display.

Salma Hayek Wears a Plunging Swimsuit and Platform Heels to Breakfast

A new photo poses the question: what’s hotter, coffee or the person drinking it? In an Instagram post shared on Aug. 23, Salma Hayek started her morning off wearing a plunging black one-piece swimsuit. The minimalist design proved that less is more with a halter neckline and flattering ruching across the torso. Hayek showed off the unconventional breakfast attire while holding her morning cup of coffee, accessorizing with a matching fedora (she does love a hat), tinted sunglasses, and towering platform heels, as one does. “Who likes coffee?” she captioned the post in English and Spanish.

Although classic and quite simple, the suit was an immediate hit in the comments section, with some of Hayek’s celebrity friends jumping in to express their approval. “I need to get me a pair of coffee mugs like yours,” Zoe Saldaña joked. Sharon Stone echoed a similar sentiment, writing, “You are a hot cup of Java lady.”

Based on her past posts, Hayek appears to be on vacation in Mexico, which would explain all her recent photos showing sunset horseback rides, beachside poses, and tropical happy hours. Prior to her trip, Hayek proved her penchant for sexy beachwear by rewearing a yellow tie bikini that previously sent the internet spiraling.

These days, her personal swimsuit collection consists of everything from a patchwork string bikini to one-pieces with similarly jaw-dropping cuts. Still, this post is proof that even the simplest suits can make a big statement. Read on to see how Hayek took her coffee in style on vacation.

While many celebrities have embraced the thongkini trend this season, Salma Hayek still makes a case for the classic bikini. On July 30, the Mexican-American actress took to Instagram to show off moments from a scuba diving trip that featured a cheery photo with her instructor, Martina Engel. As the two friends held beers post-swim, Hayek bared her cleavage in a bright-yellow bustier swimsuit top with triangle-shaped cups joined together with a chic bow. She kept things laid back with her black diving suit over her lower half, possibly covering a matching yellow bottom. Hayek’s hair was styled in a messy ponytail, and she sported a face free of makeup.

Hayek’s cemented herself as the queen of bikinis, often donning bra-inspired tops. In fact, she wore this same bikini on another boat outing in April, proving that it’s more than OK to repeat a swimsuit. The 56-year-old practically broke the internet in the suit when she posted similar photos of her directly in front of the sunset. “Every time I need to feel renewed I jump into the ocean 🌊,” she wrote. She also wore a gray version of the same two-piece with oversize sunglasses while lounging on another boat in June. And she rocked a Zimmermann patchwork set for National Bikini Day last month.

Besides her affinity for two-piece swimsuits, the mom of one has produced other noteworthy style moments. Hayek rang in the start of summer with a black oversize sun hat with a dark-wash denim corset and jeans from Alexander McQueen, and she donned a Mary Katrantzou midi dress at a “Black Mirror” screening in New York on June 13. The actor’s daughter, Valentina Pinault, has also adopted outfit repeating, as she proudly wore her mom’s old Isaac Mizrahi dress for the Oscars in March as the two hit the red carpet together.

See how Hayek’s conquering the season by re-wearing her yellow bikini ahead.

Salma Hayek continues her reign as the queen of bikinis, posting an obligatory pool shot for National Bikini Day on July 5. The “Black Mirror” actress, who is a Gucci muse and avid fashion lover, chose a multicolor patchwork design for the occasion, replete with a crochet-stitched trim. The triangle string bikini bottom features side ties with gold hardware at the ends, acting as a subtle accent to Hayek’s chandelier drop earrings — a very bohemian touch. Hayek, 56, opted for a fresh face with no makeup, and her wavy brown hair was parted at the center and left down. Her final accessory was her silver wedding band, which drew attention to her nude colored manicure.

“Happy #NationalBikiniDay! 👙Can you believe the bikini has only been around for 77 years?! Let’s hope they don’t ban them too #notathrowback,” she captioned her photo, which invited plenty of comments from her fans and fellow celebrities. Designer Harris Reed simply wrote, “Icon,” and “Wedding Crashers” star Isla Fisher left three flame emojis.

  • Black Mirror Season 6 Is The Least Black Mirror-y of All

Black Mirror Season 6 Is The Least Black Mirror-y of All

    [ad_1]

Although “Joan Is Awful,” the first episode of Black Mirror’s sixth season, might have briefly led devoted viewers to believe the series was holding fast to its usual thematic formula, it doesn’t take long to realize that the show has evolved into something altogether different from what it once was. That is to say, it’s no longer really “futuristic.” Instead, most of the five-episode season opts to delve into the past…perhaps because the present has become too bleak in a way that Black Mirror once used to caution against (but clearly failed to scare people enough with regard to what might become of us all should we give in so willingly to technological “advancements”). Indeed, there were frequent jokes that Black Mirror’s four-year hiatus—assumed to be an implied “end” of the series without explicitly saying so—was precisely because the world had “gone too Black Mirror” anyway. In other words, why bother trying to make life come across as more depressing and dystopian than it already is?

It is in this manner that the sixth season, still lovingly and meticulously written by series creator Charlie Brooker, seems to use the crutch of relying on the past more than the present or near future to portray some “sci-fi”/“speculative fiction”-type of genre. Like most shows of its kind, Black Mirror takes its influence from The Twilight Zone, and yet, this is the first season where that influence comes across as more marked than usual. For, in seasons of yore, its sole focus on the dystopian detriments of technology was noticeably more steadfast. Now, like the Jordan Peele reboot of The Twilight Zone itself, Black Mirror is all about “off-kilter” storylines as opposed to incorporating cautionary elements pertaining to technology gone horribly astray. What’s more, in the aforementioned “Joan Is Awful,” all Brooker really does is take the seed of The Truman Show and put it on steroids. So no, not much originality there, save for the “Streamberry” (a.k.a. Netflix angle) and the need to go ultra-meta to outdo previously ultra-meta fare like Scream. That meta-ness pertaining to the “twist” of the Joan we think is “real,” played by Annie Murphy, actually existing on “fictive level one.”

In this sense, Brooker uses the nightmare of The Truman Show with an updated slant primarily inspired by the implications of AI (which, again, is already here, not off in some distant future). Particularly as Hollywood reckons with that very threat amid the writers’ strike demanding not only fairer contracts and royalties that account for the streaming era, but also assurances and provisions about AI. Whether or not those provisions would mean limiting the extent to which AI can essentially “take over” a writer’s job entirely is unclear. Though it seems the executive level studio types are far more suited to being replaced by machines. Alas, those in control are the last ones to admit that they’re the least useful. And it’s among the key causes of Joan, the quintessential “average” woman, ending up with a “prestige” drama centered on her middling, expectedly uninteresting life. Another factor in Brooker’s grand statement in this episode is the idea that so many people—particularly in the post-social media climate—suffer from “main character syndrome.” This being a term popularized by none other than current social media “main character” TikTok. As for Joan, she initially laments to her therapist at the beginning of the episode, “I feel like I’m not the main character in my own life story.” This “The Truman Show thinking” being the cause for so much of why humanity has evolved into such a selfish species, with every person convinced they are not just the main character of their own life, but the main character of all existence itself.

Joan soon finds out she would be happy to have remained as someone who has no “main character energy.” Much like Leopoldo (Roberto Benigni) in Woody Allen’s 2012 movie, To Rome With Love. For he, too, is an utterly pedestrian, banal human who suddenly becomes the focus of international attention after waking up one morning to find that the paparazzi arbitrarily decide to follow and photograph him wherever he goes, and that he resultantly garners a legion of fans interested in what he’s doing all the time.

Indeed, Brooker would note of creating the “Joan Is Awful” episode, “I was also thinking about ‘main character syndrome’ on social media, where an average person fucks up and becomes the whipping boy for the day. So I sort of glommed those ideas together. It does feel very timely, and obviously for Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy, it spoke to them as actors. This is stuff that they’re already being confronted with and thinking about—how to have control over their own image and where that goes. It’s probably one of the most overt comedy episodes we’ve ever done as a Black Mirror, and at the same time it’s quite an existential nightmare.”

In contrast to Leopoldo’s existential nightmare, however, Joan does not have a nervous breakdown when the attention disappears as quickly as it arrived. Instead actively working to make the “show of her existence” go away after it wreaks catastrophic effects on her personal life. This means going to rather embarrassing lengths to get the attention of the person playing her on the show: Salma Hayek. Who turns out to have just as little agency in the use of her image as Joan, as alluded to by Brooker above. Though, in Joan’s defense, the only reason her likeness can be used is because she rotely agreed to the Terms and Conditions (as so many of us do) put forth by Streamberry in order to use it. In contrast, Hayek more willingly surrendered to this “deepfake heretic abomination” in her “image rights agreement” with Streamberry. One that “specifically covers any acts or behaviors Joan may exhibit, up to, including and beyond defecation.” In other words, the AI-generated version of Salma Hayek can be puppeteered to do pretty much whatever without Hayek being able to take legal action.

This soon leads her to take matters into her own hands, joining forces with Annie Murphy, who is really just playing Joan in “fictive level one.” Something Annie has to come to terms with as “Beppe,” the Joan Is Awful “switchboard operator,” if you will, points out, “Have you seen where you live? Uh, who could afford a place like that? It’s a TV show house. I mean, look at me. Michael Cera licensed his face, just like Annie Murphy licensed her face to play Joan on level one and Salma Hayek licensed her face to play Joan on level two.” It’s a mind fuck, to be sure. And Michael Cera playing Beppe is certain to keep emphasizing that by repeating, “We’re not in reality right now, this is fictive level one.” Where “Source Joan” is the material from which “Annie Murphy Joan” is drawn.

It’s possible Brooker opted to kick off season six with this episode because it is, to be sure, the most “on-brand” for Black Mirror. But with episode two, “Loch Henry,” the show takes a decidedly more “analog,” “grounded-in-the-present” turn. As a fundamentally British series (originally premiering on the UK’s Channel 4, and with both Brooker and producer Annabel Jones hailing from the island), it’s only right that the stage for this episode should be set in the fictional Scottish town of Loch Henry. Where a Black film student named Pia (Myha’la Herrold) has been taken by her white bread boyfriend, Davis (Samuel Blenkin), to visit his patently racist mother, Janet (Monica Dolan). Janet’s house, however, is meant to be just a pit stop along the way to where they’re really going: to film a man who is a rare egg “defender” in Rùm, one of Scotland’s Small Isles of the Inner Hebrides. However, as Pia starts to learn more about why Davis’ town is fundamentally deserted despite being so idyllic and picturesque, she realizes the more worthwhile story for their student film project is the true crime one that unfolded there in the early 90s. Davis’ old friend, Stuart (Daniel Portman), who works at the only pub left and wants to drum up tourism again, is all for it as he helps them gather interviews and footage detailing the grisly murder of tourists by farm boy Iain Adair (Tom Crowhurst).

Of course, what Davis and Pia never bargained for was that the former’s mother and deceased father were actually the ringleaders behind the multiple murders, with Iain as mere accomplice offering up his creepy-ass basement for their sick jollies. By the end of the episode, Brooker gets across his intended point that the true crime junkies who get off, ultimately, on the pain and suffering of the victims in the “story” are also as heartlessly “content-obsessed” as any viewer of Joan Is Awful. But there’s nothing “futuristic” about that. What’s more, wielding characters who are “psychologically fucked in the head” is a source for drama as evergreen as anything technology could provide. Except that, again, Black Mirror is a show intended to be rooted in the damaging effects of technology. Not garden-variety true crime “content.” At the same time, with both “Joan Is Awful” and “Loch Henry,” Brooker threads together a central theme of our collective obsession with “content.” Not only gobbling up as much as we can of it, but being “aroused,” as it were, by the anguish and “awfulness” of others…as though it might make us feel better about our own lives and wrongdoings.

In episode three, “Beyond the Sea,” Brooker goes in his most blatantly “grasping at straws” direction vis-à-vis focusing on the future. Because, in lieu of that, he opts for an alternate-history version of 1969, wherein NASA obviously made far greater advancements than Kennedy ever would have expected. Because, in this version of the year, astronauts David Ross (Josh Hartnett) and Cliff Stanfield (Aaron Paul) are able to go up in space and also go back down in a pinch to their “replica” bodies. In this way, they can spend time with their wife and kids without the hullabaloo of having to “ride back down” in their spaceship. Not that they could, for it’s a six-year mission. And part of having that replica option is a means to keep both of them from going insane as a result of only having each other to communicate with. Unfortunately, such a “freakish” innovation rubs certain people the wrong way. Namely a cult leader (this being an overt nod to Charles Manson’s domination over the year 1969) who goes by Kappa (Rory Culkin) and breaks into David’s house with his cult gang while he and his family are sleeping.

After David wakes up to try to defend himself and his brood, Kappa slices off the replica’s hand to reveal a mess of mechanical parts that further confirm his desire to destroy David for not being “natural.” Nor does Kappa believe his wife or children are for going along with living with this “robot” as though it’s their “real” husband and father. Thus, David is made to witness the brutal murder of his family, in addition to the cruel fate of his own replica being destroyed so that he’ll be forced to stay solely on the spaceship for the remaining four years of the mission. Seeing his astronaut partner start to lose it, Cliff fears David might try to kill himself while Cliff is off inside his replica. This could culminate in the spaceship crashing while Cliff’s real body is still on it. And then it’s all over for him, too. Thus, it is his wife, Lana (Kate Mara), who suggests that Cliff offers the “link” to his replica to David. Because maybe a bit of “fresh air” will do him some good. That, and the ability to draw and paint again. It doesn’t take long to see that this plotline is going to veer into some very freaky-deaky “swinger-y” territory (after all, alternate-history 1969 still can’t avoid the swingers angle—and, lest one forget, that was the same year Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice came out). What one doesn’t expect, however, is that Lana, the proverbial bored housewife reading Valley of the Dolls, isn’t going to take the bait of “David’s” dick when it’s offered. And it’s offered via the same “maneuver” he pulled with his wife by playing the original French version of “Beyond the Sea” and trying to finger her.

Scandalized by herself, she rebuffs David’s advances and runs back into the house. Lana and Cliff’s son, Henry (Daniel Bell), sensing something decidedly “off” every time David enters his father’s replica, reacts by defacing the painting of the Stanfields’ home that David’s been working on/keeps using as an excuse to come back down to Earth. When Cliff learns of the entire sordid debacle, he goes ballistic on David and bans him from ever using his replica again. But obviously, David, with nothing left to lose and no one else to obsess over, is not going to just step aside without retaliating. The end result applies to that age-old adage, “Misery loves company.” And oh, how miserable Cliff is in that last scene.

The notion of people feeding on the misery of others is also a central theme of the fourth episode, “Mazey Day.” Set in 2006, the year after TMZ was born, it is another case in point of how this season has deviated from those of yore. And yet, Brooker was adamant in noting of season six’s direction (and Black Mirror as a whole), “Humans are weak is the story, rather than technology is evil, because I love tech.” Nonetheless, it’s apparent he knew that this season might cause some upset with its departure from the norm, as he stated, “The thing I was trying to do this season is divorce my own mind from what the show is meant to be.” That said, why not have a mercilessly stalked celebrity named Mazey Day (Clara Rugaard) turn out to be a werewolf and that’s the real reason she has to go to a remote rehab facility? And yes, in case you needed confirmation, it’s definitely the most “meh” episode of the season, especially as it vastly under-utilizes the time period it’s supposed to be set during.

For the finale, “Demon 79,” Brooker again takes us into the past. In fact, the episode is introduced as being a “Red Mirror Film,” stemming from a “retro-themed horror anthology series” offshoot that Brooker had in mind before making it part of season six. And this time, the past we’re taken to, as the title of the episode indicates, is 1979. The place: North England. Where mild-mannered Nida (Anjana Vasan) works as a shoe salesgirl in a department store. As the overt minority of the town she lives in, she is met with blatant racism and hostility in all facets of her life. This includes someone spraypainting “NF” on her front door. The abbreviation for the racist, fascist political party known as the National Front. At that time in history, it had, indeed, gained a frightening amount of traction among England’s voting population. Another non-alternate history aspect of the year is the constant threat and fear of nuclear war as catalyzed by the ongoing Cold War between the West and the Soviet Union. Something Brooker uses to play with the notion of Armageddon as he makes Nida the sole source of salvation for all of humanity when she accidentally pricks her finger while opening a drawer and makes blood contact with a demonic talisman. This unleashes Gaap (Paapa Essiedu), who takes on the appearance of Boney M’s Bobby Farrell to make her feel more comfortable with listening to his directions. Those directions being to kill three people within three days to avert the apocalypse. Her hesitancy to adhere to this advice leads Gaap to show her a news report about tensions of nuclear detonation rising.

Feeling the pressure (while also feeling insane), Nida surrenders to doing the demon’s work, eventually setting her sights on a racist political candidate named Michael Smart (David Shields) as her final kill. And when Gaap shows her that his future holds becoming Prime Minister and causing countless racially-motivated murders, she’s convinced of her choice. Even when Gaap tells her the Big Demon downstairs won’t like it because he’s a fan of “Michael’s work.” Nida bites back that she’s within the rules of who to kill for her sacrifice and won’t change her mind. All the while, apparently, a romantic bond between lonely Nida and lonely Gaap has formed. Which leads to an unlikely happy ending amid a “sad” one for the rest of humanity.

So yes, as you might notice, Black Mirror is not quite itself these days. But then, have any of us really been since 2019 ended and the horrifying 2020s began?

  • Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker Keeps Finding New Ways to Freak Us Out

Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker Keeps Finding New Ways to Freak Us Out

    [ad_1]

Black Mirror mastermind Charlie Brooker is used to reveling in dystopic misery, but sometimes even he is startled by real world events. On the day he Zooms me from his home in the UK, America’s east coast is covered in toxic Canadian wildfire smoke; he is curbing himself from making jokes about it. Then there was the pandemic, which contributed to the delay between Black Mirror seasons five and six—and left Brooker at home like the rest of us, soaking up countless hours of television.

He likens it to a creative reboot, and says he approached the sixth season of the anthology series determined to broaden its boundaries. “I don’t want to sit here feeling like I’m in a box, where I have to write an episode about NFTs or whatever’s on the tech pages today,” he says. And so Black Mirror returns to Netflix this week with five very different new episodes, crammed with an enviable ensemble of actors that includes Aaron Paul, Zazie Beets, Salma Hayek, Paapa Essiedu, Kate Mara, and Annie Murphy. Some of the tales are more directly tech-oriented than others. There are shots fired at streaming platforms, AI, deepfakes and our obsession with true crime, but the show also wanders into new territory. Brooker sets several episodes in the past, cramming them with nostalgic cultural allusions and self-reflexive easter eggs. One episode, labeled “a ‘Red Mirror’ film,” is a horror movie that doesn’t rely on technology at all, but it conjures up plenty of anxiety with its grim political backdrop.

“The point of the series always was to make episodes that are really distinctly different but psychologically linked,” Brooker says. He likes to describe Black Mirror as “a box of chocolates: you don’t know what you’re gonna get, but there’s always gonna be dark chocolate. I’ve tried to push that to quite an extreme this season.”

Spoilers ahead for season six of Black Mirror.

Black Mirror is often ahead of trends, but “Joan is Awful” seems perfectly timed. AI is suddenly such a pressing issue—especially in Hollywood, where it has become a key issue in labor negotiations.

I’m super aware of that. And in a way, I’m delighted that it’s so timely, even if it’s worrying stuff that it’s touching on. We wrapped filming and then about a month later, ChatGPT came out. It’s one of those things where as a writer, you look at that and go: Uh oh! But the more you use it, the more you can see what it can do and what it can’t do. It has value as a tool for writers, like artists using tools in Photoshop. The worry is obviously executives going: I’ll generate a load of crap IP with ChatGPT and then get a human to knock it into shape.”

One of the things I was thinking about [in creating “Joan”] was deep fakes and AI generated imagery. I’d been toying with an idea about a news network that just pumps out deep fakes and calls it drama. I couldn’t work out what the actual story was, but it was a scary idea. And then when I watched The Dropout with my wife, we were like, This feels like it happened 10 minutes ago! Imagine if Amanda Seyfried, while playing Elizabeth Holmes, switches on the TV and sees The Dropout.

    A show within a show.

I wrote it quite quickly after that. And I was also thinking about “main character syndrome” on social media, where an average person fucks up and becomes the whipping boy for the day. So I sort of glommed those ideas together. It does feel very timely, and obviously for Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy, it spoke to them as actors. This is stuff that they’re already being confronted with and thinking about—how to have control over their own image and where that goes. It’s probably one of the most overt comedy episodes we’ve ever done as a Black Mirror, and at the same time it’s quite an existential nightmare.

The AI threat seems really pressing for actors, when the capability is fully in place.

And the capability sort of is there, isn’t it? It must be terrifying for the next generation of actors coming up. Are you suddenly going to be competing against all the Golden Age actors that have ever been popular? If you can keep casting Jennifer Lawrence or Tom Hanks in things forever and ever and ever, I can see that being a concern.

  • Magic Mike’s Last Dance Takes A Pretty Woman Route (With More Sexist Implications)

Magic Mike’s Last Dance Takes A Pretty Woman Route (With More Sexist Implications)

    [ad_1]

Just when you thought you had seen the last of “Michael Jeffrey Lane” (Channing Tatum), he comes along and decides to surprise you. As perhaps only a male stripper can. Even if a “retired” one. Indeed, Mike is rather easily lured out of his retirement with a few mere words from a “wild card” of a socialite named Maxandra Mendoza (Salma Hayek Pinault—since we must add that last part to her name now). A woman Mike encounters at a party where he’s tending bar. Just another in a series of gigs that he’s been forced to take on in the wake of his furniture company closing. For, per our as-of-yet unknown narrator, a global pandemic isn’t very conducive to one’s business. And, considering the last time we saw Magic Mike was in the pre-apocalypse era (2015), things are looking even bleaker for the “ex” stripper than they did in Magic Mike XXL (which features, among other presently fallen stars, Amber Heard and Stephen “tWitch” Boss).

So it is that our narrator also informs us, “Like many forty-year-old millennial white males, Mike Lane found himself alone and adrift in an ocean of failed relationships and unrealized dreams.” Because, no, fulfilling drink orders was not his “dream.” Though, in some ways, bartending isn’t unlike stripping. You’re still performing a series of acrobatic maneuvers ultimately aimed at pleasing people. As Mike seems to almost immediately please Maxandra by disarming her during their first interaction via the question, “You gettin’ what you want?” When she does a double take at this, he clarifies, “With the fundraiser. It looks like it’s going all right.” Something in her shifts, as though a light has gone on—especially after Mike mentions, “People like to look at what they can’t have.” Hearing from a party guest that Mike used to be a stripper (/maybe more), Maxandra is emboldened to invite him into her house after the party is over.

When Mike insists he doesn’t do “that” anymore, and that the price to make him would be sixty thousand dollars, Maxandra offers six thousand. And so begins “the dance.” Lucky Daye’s “Careful” plays over the speakers of her living room as Mike delivers a seduction that borders the fine line between sexy and comedic (as most seductions are fundamentally absurd). It’s already at this early juncture that we can see the parallels that align Pretty Woman with this particular installment of the Magic Mike series. For in no other Magic Mike movie was there any older, well-to-do “patron” offering cash in exchange for no sex. At first anyway. For on that initial night when Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) is picked up by Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) and taken to the Regent Beverly Wilshire, she’s all about securing the bag. Until she realizes that, for Edward, the encounter isn’t really about sex—though, again, not until later. When Vivian tells him in the car on the way, “I never joke about money,” Edward replies, “Neither do I.” They seem like a perfect fit right out the gate. The same goes for Mike and Maxandra, the latter, in her Edward role, challenging Mike to make more of himself. To actually pursue his true passion. This is broached when she inquires, “Do you like bartending?” Mike shrugs, “Sure, uh, it’s not really what I do, but yeah. Why not?”

Vivian essentially feels the same way about prostitution, but clearly makes the most of it (this includes calling herself a “safety girl” when she shows Edward an array of condoms from the selection contained within her thigh-high boot). Edward, however, can already see that she’s so much more—finding out just that when he catches her with dental floss in her hand, as opposed to the illicit drug he assumes it must be (stereotyping sex workers as usual, but, hey, it was the 90s). Increasingly charmed with Viv throughout the night, the two finally “seal the deal” to the background of an I Love Lucy episode, of all things. The following day, just as Maxandra will ask of Mike, Edward proposes they spend a much larger block of time together (one week to Mike and Maxandra’s one month). As Edward puts it, “I will pay you to be at my beck and call.”

As will Maxandra for Mike, promising him the original sixty thousand dollars he suggested if he accompanies her to London. Cajoled into going, despite having no idea what the “job” he’s being offered actually is, Mike finds out that Maxandra believes in his talent and potential so much that she’s enlisted him to be the new director/choreographer of a play she wants to revamp called Isabel Ascendant—which means they’re keeping the first scene from said play and turning it into, essentially, a Chippendales act.

The “May-December” romance that continues to blossom throughout this period of collaboration is astutely observed by Maxandra’s daughter, Zadie (Jemelia George)—she being the one who has been intermittently inserting her narrations this whole time. While Salma Hayek Pinault is fifty-six, Julia Roberts—ergo, Vivian Ward—was twenty-three in 1990, when Pretty Woman came out. A vast difference compared to Mike’s forty (Tatum himself is actually forty-two). Roughly the age Richard Gere was in 1990. The gap between Gere and Roberts was obviously larger in part because it was (and is) so commonplace for men to pursue younger women without half as much judgment as older women opting for younger men. This is made patent when Maxandra’s husband, Roger Rattigan (Alan Cox), who seems to be some faint foil for Hayek’s own rich husband in real life, cuts her down by saying, “I know when you’re being used. Don’t you see that? Darling, I know we’re all getting old, but I didn’t know you were so desperate.” No one would ever dare say such a thing to Edward about his younger woman choice—instead only making mention that she’s a hooker as a point of contention.

The power and age dynamics at play in both Pretty Woman and Magic Mike’s Last Dance are what make the tension (primarily sexual) in both feel so palpable at any given moment. And while both Edward and Maxandra could have “chosen” any non-“for pay” companion, each thought they were going to spare themselves from emotional attachment if it was under the guise of a “business proposition” instead.

In the famous final scene of Pretty Woman, Edward asks Vivian, “So what happened after he climbed the tower and rescued her?” Vivian replies, “She rescues him right back.” The same goes for Mike and Maxandra, even if the latter does have to abandon “her” fortune in order to be with Mike. Because, naturally, the fortune belonged to her husband, who, quelle surprise, has an utterly strangling series of prenup clauses that makes it impossible to live freely without just abandoning the cash altogether. But at least Maxandra can acknowledge the unfairness of being in an Edward role without actually being an Edward. This by telling her driver/butler, Victor (Ayub Khan Din)—the requisite Barney (Héctor Elizondo) of the movie—“[Mike] believes in me, and I have to go tell him that our show about empowering women is dead because I’m so fucking powerless.” Nonetheless, Mike will not let her give up all they worked toward during their last few weeks together. Which is why Maxandra’s power, in the end, is still delivered by the presence/swooping in of a man. Making her little better, “station in life-wise” than Vivian.

Salma Hayek Admits She Had To Be ‘Dragged’ To Courthouse For Wedding: ‘Didn’t Even Know I Was Getting Married That Day’

    By Anita Tai.

Salma Hayek is a happily married woman but it took a long road to get there.

The actress married French businessman François-Henri Pinault in 2009 on Valentine’s Day. Ahead of their anniversary, Hayek is thinking back to the “intervention” that led to their union.

“I didn’t even know I was getting married that day,” she recalled to Glamour, via People. “It was like an intervention. I don’t think I ever told this story. No, they just took me to the court. My parents, my brother, they were all ganging up on me. I had a phobia of the marriage thing.”

The two had been dating since 2006 and even welcomed a daughter together in 2007.

Still, she had to be “dragged” to the courthouse by her family to go through the ceremony.

“I was nervous,” continued the “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” actress. “And then, after, there was a lunch at his parents’ house. My mother-in-law, who’s the most tasteful person when it comes to entertaining, had already been doing the lunch. I had no choice.”

Hayek made sure to clarify the wedding wasn’t made under duress, but rather that she was dragging her feet about it.

“It was because I had said yes to the marriage, but I just wouldn’t actually show up on the day or do it,” she explained. “And then afterward I said, ‘Oh, it’s okay. I don’t feel any different.’ And then a little bit later I said, ‘Okay, this is kind of exciting.’ And he’s like, ‘Can we have a party now?’”

A few months later they held a grand wedding in Italy with famous friends like Penelope Cruz, Edward Norton, Woody Harrelson, Ashley Judd, Charlize Theron, Bono, Gael Garcéa Bernal, David Blaine, Anna Wintour, and former French President Jacques Chirac in attendance.

14 years later, the actress is happy with how “boring” her married life is now.

“Boredom is underestimated,” she said. “I didn’t understand this for a long time. Also, it helps that we met each other later in our lives. It’s okay just to do nothing and be together; sometimes sharing a space and doing your own thing in silence, with connectivity and thoughtfulness—’Can I bring you a cup of tea?’—is enough. It’s little simple things.”

In fact, her supportive husband had no qualms about her getting close with the cast of male strippers on her latest film.

“My husband is not a jealous man,” she praised. “I used to call him all the time [from set] and say, ‘Oh my God, I feel so bad,’ because I had this predisposition about how the guys, the strippers were going to be. But they’re not. They’re lovely. They’re such great guys. And [my husband] goes, ‘Oh God, you’re becoming best friends with the strippers, aren’t you?’ And I said, ‘Yes!’ ”
