    Dakota Johnson turned heads in a dreamy blush-pink Valentino gown designed by Alessandro Michele. The dress featured crystal floral appliqués and a tulle neckline that shimmered with every move. True to her signature style, Dakota kept it minimal, straight hair, wispy bangs, dewy skin, and simple drop earrings paired with a sleek black clutch.

    Miley Cyrus brought rock ‘n’ roll energy to the carpet in head-to-toe Saint Laurent. Her oversized trench, cinched at the waist over a crisp white shirt, was a bold nod to androgynous power dressing. Leather gloves, a biker cap, sheer tights, and pointed slingbacks added that signature Miley attitude, edgy, fearless, and effortlessly cool.

    As if her Saturday Night Live promo images weren’t chic enough—with especially note-worthy inclusions being an Alessandra Rich catsuit made entirely of lace and a Khaite bodysuit styled with just tights and a giant feather coat—this week’s host Dakota Johnson showed up to the after party in the most perfect sheer, hand-beaded vintage Alaïa gown, like, ever. 

    The dress, which was designed by the late founder of the house Azzedine Alaïa and included in his spring/summer 1996 collection, was sourced by Johnson’s longtime stylist Kate Young from Vintage Grace, a New York City–based designer-vintage business founded by Chandler Guttersen in 2021. It features short sleeves and sequin embellishments throughout, making it completely sheer and perfect for the occasion. On top, the Madame Web actress wore a feather Saint Laurent jacket, adding simple black pumps and a Jimmy Choo handbag to finish off the look.

    The First Viral Shoes of 2024 Are Here

    We’re no more than mere days into 2024, and already, the year’s first footwear phenomenon has taken hold, commanding over Instagram and single-handedly ushering in a very chic but slightly uncomfortable 366 days. Its name is Lee. Crafted by Saint Laurent’s creative director since 2016, Anthony Vaccarello, the Lee is a 4.25-inch geometric stiletto with a heel that’s varnished in the same color of the exaggerated buckle that fastens its patent-leather slingback straps to the rest of the shoes. Some variations are available with a black heel if too much gold isn’t your thing. Available in six colorways, the style made its debut at the French house’s fall/winter 2023 show alongside ’80s-inspired corporate ensembles fit for the office siren, and now that its shoppable, fashion’s elite, including Laura Harrier and Hailey Bieber, can’t seem to get enough. 

    Scrolling through my Instagram feed over the last few days, I’ve noticed the vampy stilettos on a near-constant basis, often styled alongside other pieces from the fall collection, including pencil skirts, sheer and low-cut tank tops, and shoulder-padded oversize blazers. Hosiery is a must with these, and extra-sheer tights are the primary pick for most of the wearers I’ve seen. According to Vogue, the goal of Vaccarello’s collection was to hit on the concept of elegance and “being dressed.” There was a time not long ago when putting on a pencil skirt, stockings, and heels this sky-high would’ve sent a shutter down most of our spines. That’s no longer the case, though, and 2024’s early obsession with the Lee silhouette is further proof that comfort is no longer king. This year, a “look at me” outfit will reign supreme over one that satisfies your sense of touch and feel. I love my trusty Uggs, too, but they just don’t show off like the Lees will.

    9 Major Trends That Will Define Fall/Winter Fashion

    It took a while—and over 1000 runway images—to finally wrap our heads around the contents of fashion month. For the first time in a long time, the runways this fall/winter season had an almost tangible air of newness to them, with a handful of designer debuts—including Daniel Lee at Burberry and Ludovic de Saint Sernin at Ann Demeulemeester—and a number of veterans successfully refreshing their brands in the eyes of the fashion community. Most substantial, though, were the trends presented by these designers and so many more, who managed to deliver some of the most unexpected groupings we’ve seen in ages that somehow still fit within the current zeitgeist. 

    Tory Burch, Miuccia Prada for Prada and Miu Miu, Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent, and Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta all seemed to grasp what so many have tried and failed to in the past—that is, what women actually wear. In a relatable move, Prada sent models down the runway at Miu Miu looking intentionally frazzled, having remembered to wear stockings and outerwear but forgotten pants and a hairbrush.

    Elsewhere, Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent collection displayed a contrasting glimpse of the female form, one that’s strict in its put-togetherness, utilizing intensely strong tailoring and powerful silhouettes to get his message across. Finally, at Loewe, Ferragamo, and Jil Sander, our desire for comfort played out in the form of furry footwear, fashionable security blankets, and apparel fitted with oversize hoods.

    Love Them or Hate Them, Oversize Sunglasses Are Back

    Whether you’re ready for their return or dreading it with every fiber of your being, oversize sunglasses are on their way to a monumental comeback, with the brands on everyone’s lips right now, from Saint Laurent and Khaite to Phoebe Philo and Tom Ford, putting aside their love for microscopic eyewear in favor of styles of the larger, more shield-like variety. And now that their stance on the subject’s been solidified on the runways, there’s no turning back. 

    Here’s why I’m not mad about it. As much as I’ve played into the tiny-sunglasses movement that started in the late 2010s and has flourished until just recently, the styles simply aren’t as practical as their more substantial counterparts. Half the time when I’m wearing small shades, I’m not getting any actual sun protection, which is hardly the case when I grab for my larger aviators or ’70s-inspired square pairs. But that’s not all.     According to Hailey Bieber’s Stylist, Espresso Fall Is a Legit Fashion Trend

    As much as I like to indulge in at least one pumpkin-spice beverage per year—not when fall “officially” starts (aka September 23rd) but when you can actually feel it in your bones—I don’t particularly enjoy wearing the color. Some people can pull off burnt orange. I’m not one of them. Fortunately, Dani Michelle, the stylist behind Kendall Jenner, Bruna Marquezine, and Hailey Bieber’s lusted-over street style looks, has a new color on her mind for fall that’s both delicious visually as well as in taste.

    “Espresso fall” was all that Michelle captioned on a street-style photo of Bieber heading into Kim Kardashian’s 43rd birthday party at Funke in Los Angeles. In the image, the model and Rhode founder can be seen wearing various shades of espresso, from a light-roast, suede Prada blazer from the F/W ’23 collection to a medium-roast, leather Zeynep Arçay miniskirt. On her feet are a pair of burgundy Gucci slingback kitten heels from the brand’s first collection with its new creative director Sabato de Sarno, while a matching Saint Laurent 5 À 7 bag rests on her shoulder. And to top it all off, gold Khaite studs were added, as well as her new signature Alex Moss diamond “B” bubble necklace.

    Picking out your outfits for fashion week takes hours of consideration and planning. As much as we’d all like to pretend that every look found in those famed street-style roundups was thrown together effortlessly, nine times out of then, they were crafted days ahead of the first show. As for what inspires them, the previous season’s runway collections are almost always at the top of the list, and this year, for me, will be no different. 

    Once you decide that that’s the route you’re going to take, the next step is to select which looks to make your muses, usually based on buzziness, the weather, your personal style preferences, and what you already have in your wardrobe, of course. Since I’ve had a running list of my favorite looks from the fall 2023 shows I bore witness to last February for closing in on six months now, selecting the ones I wanted to mimic wasn’t all that difficult. Then, all that’s left to do is fill in the blanks of each outfit with new pieces.     In a time when an entire phenomenon can begin and end on TikTok in the span of 24 hours, tracking what’s viral is a full-time job.     When Bailey stepped into the role of Ariel, she entered the world of FODs  (First, Only, Different—a phrase coined by Shonda Rhimes). Bailey is quick to give flowers to the FODs who came before her, Brandy Norwood (who played Cinderella in the 1997 Rodgers and Hammerstein TV adaptation) and Anika Noni Rose (the voice of Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess, in The Princess and the Frog).

    For a girl who once played with mermaids with her sister, landing the part of Ariel is a dream come true for Bailey, and she hopes her casting is one day seen as standard and not extraordinary. “It’s crazy, because we’re in the year 2023. You would think that these firsts are not firsts anymore,” she says with wistful optimism. “I just hope that for the future it’s not such a shock anymore for a Black woman to be cast as Ariel and for that to just be a normal thing.”

    While the character of Ariel means so much to many, it’s beautiful to hear how much the character taught Bailey.

    “I’ve been comfortable really just being with somebody all the time. Somebody has always held my hand. I’ve never had to do anything alone. So this was really my first venture into solo adulthood. I had moved to London, and I was in intense rehearsals and stunts and mermaid training, and all of a sudden, I’m going through this not only physical transformation but [also] mental and spiritual transformation of me finding who I am on my own and building that confidence within myself to be able to do these things,” she says. “So I truly feel like Ariel taught me that I’m worthy, and I’m stronger than I thought. We were filming in the middle of the pandemic and in London, and my family couldn’t come visit me. So I was very isolated. Everything was closed down. I would literally go from work to home, and I would sleep on the weekends because I’d be so tired, and then I’d go right back to work. But looking back, I am happy that it was that way. [It] helped me mirror the emotions Ariel was feeling in the film to where she felt trapped and isolated and ready to see a brand-new world where her heart belonged. I felt like there were parallels to both of our lives in the time that I was filming, and I was grateful for that.”

    Taken two years apart, the photos show the versatility and longevity of a T-shirt dress like this one that you can belt or wear on its own, not to mention wear hundreds of different ways that make it—a blank canvas—look entirely new. There’s only one problem: Not everyone (myself included) can afford to spend almost $900 on a dress, even one as timeless as Richie’s. Fortunately, I was able to find a $69 alternative at Nordstrom that will more than get the job done. It’s really no big deal, but you can thank me by scrolling down and seeing the dare I say *perfect* T-shirt dress I’m buying to get Richie’s low-key cool look this summer.

    Dua Lipa Wears Everything First: A Look at Her Coolest Outfits

    In the ranks of pop’s most fashionable acts, without a doubt, Dua Lipa is top 5. And this year the singer has “arrived” in a big sense: she was the co-chair (along with Penelope Cruz, Micaela Coel, and Roger Federer) of this week’s Met Gala. Not everyone gets to help plan one of fashion’s biggest nights alongside Anna Wintour, but if you’ve kept tabs on Dua Lipa’s style, the invitation seems like a no-brainer.

    Simply put, the English singer is a fashion girl in every sense of the word. Exhibit A—her Instagram. Lipa is a prolific outfit documenter—her feed is full of glossy photos (some selfies) featuring outfits she’s worn across her international tour, on random vacations (which seems very relatable), and during fashion week. It’s clear that Lipa enjoys experimenting with clothes—hardly any other artist can rival the number of outfit photos as the singer. And it’s also clear that she, (or someone on her team) has a knack for discovering up-and-coming brands—digging through Lipa’s fashion archives, she seems to wear indie brands just as often as the big-name, designer heavy hitters. She was one of the first people to wear Fanci Club’s viral Garden of Eden dress, as well as other emerging labels like No Dress, KNWLS and Louisa Ballou. It could be (and probably very likely) Lipa is sent these amazing clothes by the designers themselves, but it says a lot that she’s able to fish out the pieces and brands that later become cult favorites.
