  • Breakaway Music Festival debuts in Sacramento with electronic dance music

    The Breakaway Music Festival is hosting its inaugural event in Sacramento at Cal Expo, bringing electronic dance music to the city after three years in San Francisco.The festival features three stages and dozens of performances. Day one was marked with performances from Tiesto, Elderbrook and Malaa. Martin Garrix and Louis the Child will headline day two. “It’s great. I love it. We’re happy to be here and excited for the next two days,” festivalgoer Ryan McAuliffe said. The move to Sacramento surprised some attendees, but many said they were pleased with the convenience. “I was really surprised that EDM was making its way over to Sacramento of all places. I mean, I’m used to going to San Francisco and all sorts of different places,” festivalgoer Dre Alvarado said. “But in Sacramento, it’s kind of great to just be able to just drive 10 minutes from my house to come to an EDM fest.””First of all, less travel time. So it’s great. I love it,” festivalgoer Yadira Cuevas said. Visit Sacramento noted that the festival will provide a boost to the city during a weekend that previously hosted the GoldenSky Country Music Festival. They expect about 20,000 people over two days. The festival is introducing a new sound to Sacramento, but it is fostering a familiar sense of community. “I think like overall, like there’s just so much love and positivity,” Alvarado said.”Everybody just feels like family when you don’t even know them,” festivalgoer Gabriela Hernandez said. “We’re here to dance and it’s just all peace, love, unity and respect,” festivalgoer Amanda Katami said.     The KCRA 3 weather team continues to monitor a storm system that will bring rain and some high-elevation snow to Northern California at the start of next week.Monday and Tuesday are now KCRA 3 weather Impact Days.     Rain forecast

    Rain will be widespread for the Valley and Foothills. Places like Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto could pick up a half inch to an inch of rain Monday through Tuesday.

    The Foothills are now expected to see higher totals ranging between one and two and a half inches.

    The KCRA 3 weather team has been increasing the expected rainfall totals for Monday and Tuesday. Ponding on roads and slow travel should be expected, especially Monday evening and Tuesday morning. 

    These rain totals could lead to some ponding on roads, especially in areas where drains are blocked. Stream flooding is not currently expected. This rain will also put pause on fire season for much of the region.

    It is important to note that forecast models continue to shift as the storm approaches. The KCRA 3 weather team will provide updates as those changes come in.

    A Winter Storm Watch will go into effect Monday for places above 6,500 feet in the Sierra.

    Next week’s storm track is currently unfavorable for big snow totals around Lake Tahoe, there should still be enough accumulation for chain controls at times on Highway 50, Interstate 80 and Highway 88 Monday night through Tuesday.

    There will be enough snow for chain controls and long travel delays over Donner and Echo Summit next week. Ebbetts Pass, Sonora Pass and Monitor Pass will all be closed temporarily.

    Bigger totals are expected in Alpine and Mono County. Caltrans has said that Monitor, Ebbetts and Sonora passes will be temporarily closed because of the snow between October 13th and 16th.

    Snow levels are expected to hover between 6,000 and 7,000 feet throughout the duration of the storm.

    Beyond Tuesday, the forecast continues to look cooler than normal for mid-October.

  • Nurse dies days after Northern California medical helicopter crashes onto Highway 50

    The nurse who was on board the helicopter that crashed in Sacramento has died, REACH Air Medical Services said on Saturday.

    Suzie Smith was identified as one of the people who was in the medical helicopter that crashed onto Highway 50 on Monday. She was seriously injured and had been in critical and unstable condition since the crash.

    “We will remember Suzie as a pillar of the EMS and healthcare community who saved countless lives by delivering compassionate care in their darkest hours,” REACH said. “Suzie’s 50-year career as a nurse included nearly 21 years with REACH, and we are proud to call her our colleague and friend.”

    The crash happened while the REACH 5 Medical Air crew was heading back to Redding after dropping off a patient at UC Davis Medical Center. Also onboard was a pilot and paramedic, who remain in critical condition. REACH identified them as Chad Millward, the pilot, and Margaret “DeDe” Davis, the paramedic.

    Smith is survived by her husband, son, two sisters and a brother.

    “It’s with a heavy heart that I write this message. I got to hold my mother while she passed last night but her legacy is far from over,” her son Gabriel Smith said in a Facebook post. “In my mother’s line of work she was never far from death but she never let it harden her heart. She knew every second was precious and chose to spend that time helping others and building communities.”

    The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

    Following a 175-day hiatus, Sacramento Kings basketball returned to Golden 1 Center on Wednesday night.Fans in attendance got their first look at a new-look Kings team that featured newly-signed point guard Dennis Schroder, rookie wing Nique Clifford (24th pick in June’s NBA Draft), and big man Maxime Raynaud (42nd pick in the NBA Draft) against the Toronto Raptors in the first of four preseason tune-up games.Exhibition games are always a mixed bag–sporadic rotations, limited minutes, and in this case, no broadcast on local or national TV.   • Bystanders describe lifting Sacramento helicopter wreckage to free pinned victim after crash landing

    Three victims remained in critical condition in a Sacramento hospital on Tuesday night, a day after a medical helicopter crashed onto Highway 50.

    On board the REACH flight were the pilot, a paramedic and a nurse who was identified to CBS Sacramento by family as Suzie Smith of Redding. The pilot and paramedic have not yet been identified.

    The Sacramento Fire Department said, when they first arrived on scene after 7 p.m., its crew called on drivers to help them lift the helicopter to free Smith, who was pinned under the wreckage.

    Terry De Crescenzo captured the moment on video as her husband, Ken, and more than a dozen other bystanders raced to help.

    It came after the chopper crashed just feet in front of their car. No drivers or passengers on the highway were injured.

    “I realized there were no other cars around that were hit, and I thought, how did that happen?” Terry asked, with Ken calling it “a miracle.”

    The group of people is captured on video lifting the chopper as paramedics free Smith.

    “We just ran up to it and found a spot to grab onto the helicopter and just pushed and lifted it best we could, we had to lift it up,” said Ken.

    Another driver, Priscilla Cochran-Navarra, also ran to help. She was in the first row of cars that slammed on their brakes as the chopper came crashing down before her eyes.

    “A few of us tried to lift the helicopter at first and, initially, when I felt how heavy, like there was no movement, it wouldn’t budge at all. But when fifteen people or so came to do it, it was just seemed like the impossible became possible,” said Cochran-Navarra.

    Not only that, Cochran-Navarra also says she was the first to get to Smith’s side, comforting the nurse as she was pinned and pleading for help.

    “I lay down on the ground, and I just tell her, ‘You’re alive. You’re alive. Just stay still.’ I said, ‘You’re not alone. I’m not going to leave you. You’re not alone.’ It was just crazy. It was crazy. Sorry, I keep playing it. She’s screaming for help, like, ‘Help me. Help me,’ ” said Cochran-Navarra through tears.

    She said she was proud to see her city come together in that moment.

    “It was good to see Sacramento united,” said Cochran-Navarra. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt that since 9/11, you know? At that time, everyone came together. It didn’t matter what you did, who you are, who you love, who you prayed to. None of that made a difference.”

    These good Samaritans say they were grateful they were in the right place at the right time to help and that no one was injured.

    “My first thought was, how amazing. And I mean this sincerely, that nobody questioned. Everybody was just like, these are human beings that need us, and everybody just ran to help them,” said Terry.

    Cochran-Navarra said her prayer is to reunite with Smith after she hopefully makes a full recovery.

    “I hope that I’m able just to, just to tell her how incredibly happy I am that she’s alive and and I would tell her I’m so grateful that I was able to help her,” said Cochran-Navarra through tears.

    Officials are investigating after a medical helicopter crashed on a Sacramento freeway Monday evening.

    The Sacramento Fire Department said a REACH medical helicopter went down shortly after 7 p.m. on eastbound Highway 50 near 59th Street.

    Three crew members — a pilot, a nurse and a paramedic — were on board and all were taken to area hospitals with critical injuries, Captain Justin Sylvia with Sacramento Fire said. No vehicles on the freeway were involved.

    Two crew members were located in the roadway while one of the crew members was trapped under the helicopter when the first unit from the fire department arrived, Sylvia said. A fire captain and bystanders who offered help were able to lift the aircraft off the trapped crew member.

    “We are in the process of determining the details of this situation, as well as the condition of the REACH crew involved, who were all taken to area hospitals,” REACH said in a statement. “We will continue to provide information as it becomes available. There was no patient on board.”  

    One lane of Eastbound Highway 50 had been reopened at 59th Street to allow for traffic to pass through, the California Highway Patrol said.

    The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it is assisting the CHP, which said it will help the National Transportation Safety Board in the probe. CBS Sacramento has reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration as well.

THE LANDING GEAR UNDERNEATH THE HELICOPTER ITSELF WAS SHAKING LIKE RATTLING IN THE AIR. SO I KNEW SOMETHING WAS OFF AS IT WAS APPROACHING VERY LOW, I WAS SCREAMING TO MY WIFE, I GO, THIS THING’S COMING DOWN, IT’S GOING DOWN, IT’S GOING DOWN, IT’S GOING DOWN.     Eastbound Highway 50 is under a full closure at 59th Street due to the crash, the California Highway Patrol said. Highway 99 northbound to Highway 50 eastbound, and Highway 51 southbound to Highway 50 eastbound are also shut down, with an unknown time for reopening.

    The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it is assisting the CHP.

    Three people were shot early Sunday morning in midtown Sacramento at The Lock & Key, officials said. Although their 2025 uniforms have a Tower Bridge sleeve patch on them, this is the first jersey since the A’s moved to Sutter Health Park to say Sacramento on it. Each Saturday home game next season will be part of “Sacramento Saturdays,” according to a release from the Athletics.   • Rescued Sacramento Chihuahua becoming top dog in marathons

    Running a marathon takes grit, training and heart. Andrew Owens has all three. But what sets him apart isn’t his pace, it’s his partner.

     “The minute she sees the people, the loudspeaker, then she knows something big is about to happen,” Owens told CBS News Bay Area. 

    Meet Jellybean. Nine pounds of fur and fight, rescued from a Sacramento shelter and now showing the marathon world who’s the top dog. 

    She races alongside her dad Andrew and his girlfriend Melissa.

    Jellybean’s warmup routine? Nonexistent. Her carb load? Dog treats. Her training plan? Just keep going.

    And go she has: seven marathons, two ultra-marathons and a personal best of 3 hours, 47 minutes.

    CBS News Bay Area caught up with her at the Berkeley Trail Adventure Run, though “caught up” might be stretching it.

    Jellybean was running ahead in a speed that is surprising for a Chihuahua. 

    “What I’ve learned is that marathon runners come in all shapes and sizes,” Owens said.

    It all started when Owens took her on short jogs and discovered she was born to run. Soon, this tiny pooch was inspiring others.

    “Someone came up to me and said, ‘If she can do it, why can’t I?’” Owens said. 

    Craig Schmidt, who runs Inside Trail Racing (https://insidetrail.com/), said dog-friendly marathons are on the rise. But there’s a catch.

     “Not every dog is good to go running, not every dog is good to be out on the trails, so it’s definitely a lot of training that goes into it,” Schmidt said. 

    After five hours and 28 minutes, Jellybean crossed the finish line, without so much as breaking a sweat. Now her sights are set on something even bigger — a world record attempt for small dogs during a marathon in Utah next May.

    But not before heading to her post-marathon ritual. 

    “Next stop, Chipotle kids meal chicken double cheese,” Owens said.

  • U.S. attorney said she was fired after telling Border Patrol to follow a court order

    The acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento has said she was fired after telling the Border Patrol chief in charge of immigration raids in California that his agents were not allowed to arrest people without probable cause in the Central Valley.

    Michele Beckwith, a career prosecutor who was made the acting U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of California earlier this year, told the New York Times that she was let go after she warned Gregory Bovino, chief of the Border Patrol’s El Centro Sector, that a court injunction blocked him from carrying out indiscriminate immigration raids in Sacramento.

    Beckwith did not respond to a request for comment from the L.A. Times, but told the New York Times that “we have to stand up and insist the laws be followed.”

    The U.S. attorney’s office in Sacramento declined to comment. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment Friday evening.

    Bovino presided over a series of raids in Los Angeles starting in June in which agents spent weeks pursuing Latino-looking workers outside of Home Depots, car washes, bus stops and other areas. The agents often wore masks and used unmarked vehicles.

    But such indiscriminate tactics were not allowed in California’s Eastern District after the American Civil Liberties Union and United Farm Workers filed suit against the Border Patrol earlier in the year and won an injunction.

    The suit followed a January operation in Kern County called “Operation Return to Sender,” in which agents swarmed a Home Depot and Latino market, among other areas frequented by laborers. In April, a federal district court judge ruled that the Border Patrol likely violated the Constitution’s protections against unreasonable search and seizure.

    As Beckwith described it to New York Times reporters, she received a phone call from Bovino on July 14 in which he said he was bringing agents to Sacramento.

    She said she told him that the injunction filed after the Kern County raid meant he could not stop people indiscriminately in the Eastern District. The next day, she wrote him an email in which, as quoted in the New York Times, she stressed the need for “compliance with court orders and the Constitution.”

    Shortly thereafter her work cell phone and her work computer stopped working. A bit before 5 p.m. she received an email informing her that her employment was being terminated effective immediately.

    It was the end of a 15-year career in in the Department of Justice in which she had served as the office’s Criminal Division Chief and First Assistant and prosecuted members of the Aryan Brotherhood, suspected terrorists, and fentanyl traffickers.

    Two days later on July 17, Bovino and his agents moved into Sacramento, conducting a raid at a Home Depot south of downtown.

    In an interview with Fox News that day, Bovino said the raids were targeted and based on intelligence. “Everything we do is targeted,” he said. “We did have prior intelligence that there were targets that we were interested in and around that Home Depot, as well as other targeted enforcement packages in and around the Sacramento area.”

    He also said that his operations would not slow down. “There is no sanctuary anywhere,” he said. “We’re here to stay. We’re not going anywhere. We’re going to affect this mission and secure the homeland.”

    Beckwith is one of a number of top prosecutors who have quit or been fired as the Trump administration pushes the Department of Justice to aggressively carry out his policies, including investigating people who have been the president’s political targets.

    In March, a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles was fired after lawyers for a fast-food executive he was prosecuting pushed officials in Washington to drop all charges against him, according to multiple sources.

    In July, Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor in Manhattan and the daughter of former FBI director James Comey, was fired by the Trump administration, according to the New York Times.

    And just last week, a U. S. attorney in Virginia was pushed out after he had determined there was insufficient evidence to prosecute James B. Comey. A new prosecutor this week won a grand jury indictment against Comey on one count of making a false statement and one count of obstruction of a congressional proceeding.

Aside from a pop-up storm south of Tahoe, the Sierra will be quiet, with highs in the upper 70s. There’s a slightly greater chance of storms in the Sierra this weekend as the region prepares for more unsettled weather next week. Meanwhile, temperatures will begin to drop–valley highs in the mid-80s on Saturday, then the mid-70s on Sunday. Our next significant weather system will arrive from the northwest with a sagging trough. Showers will reach the valley Monday evening and become widespread Tuesday, accompanied by increasing breezes. Valley highs will fall to the low 70s Tuesday, and showers are expected through Wednesday. Drier weather is forecast for the second half of next week, with valley highs rebounding to the upper 70s.

    Sacramento police have let go 41 retired officers who were working part-time after a CalPERS audit found compliance issues with their employment conditions.These reserve officers, known as retired annuitants, were often considered extra help and included individuals brought in on an interim basis to fill vacancies or prevent emergencies.The audit found that one officer returned to work only 30 days after retirement, instead of the required 60 days. In another instance, some officers did not submit the required documentation showing they had not received unemployment insurance prior to their return to work.Dustin Smith, the president of the Sacramento Police Officers Association, said the audit marked the end of decades of service for dozens of officers. “For most of them, it’s just heart-wrenching because this is a big part of who you are and what you do in life,” Smith said. “We have 40-year employees that have given their life, their heart and soul to this community, that are all basically with a phone call, were told, ‘I’m sorry, we have to let you go.’”Smith said the reserve officers would generally help with things like cold case investigations, jail intake, and special events. He said losing them will hurt—especially amid a staff shortage.“There’s going to be more police officers pulled off the streets, trapped in a place like jail, doing basic admin work instead of coming back out to handle calls for service. So, call response times and all the things we talk about routinely to help the community are going to go down again,” Smith said. Sacramento Police shared a statement saying in part, “At this time, we are still working with City Human Resources to determine how the work previously performed by retired annuitants will be addressed, and we do not yet have details on what the impact will be to staffing.”Meanwhile, CalPERS released a statement saying, “We are working with the city to resolve the issues and ensure that the retired annuitants they want to utilize are processed correctly.     The accident was horrific. *** Korean Air *** War jet leaving an air show at Executive Airport crashed into *** fireball, skidding across Freeport Boulevard, slamming into Ferrell’s ice cream parlor. The date September 24, 1972. The death toll 22 killed, 12 of them children. This is the site today. It will soon be the headquarters for Sacramento’s police and fire departments. It will also be *** memorial site thanks to one survivor. I just kind of thought, gee, I wonder if anything’s ever been done, but I just didn’t have enough courage to go back. It hurt too much. Kerry McCluskey and her twin sister were just *** few months shy of their 4th birthday when their babysitter took. For ice cream, Kerry suffered *** broken leg. Her identical twin sister Christy was killed. Initially, Kerry fought City Hall, asking the city to abandon its plans to use the building. The city stuck to its choice, noting that since the crash, runway 1230 has been shortened, the airport moving the landing and takeoff areas farther away from Freeport Boulevard. From the start, the city has Hesitation to commit to *** memorial. My thought was, why isn’t there *** memorial already? Why didn’t we do something? And clearly if other people want to have it, it’s time to do it. The plans for the memorial located near where the former ice cream parlor’s front door was will include *** patio area, benches, and *** plaque. The city has asked Kerry to come up with what the memorial should say. She’s already asked her 4 year old daughter to draw angels for the plaque. It’s an awesome responsibility, but I feel privileged and honored at the same time. The city has already committed $20,000 to the project. Carrie would like to raise more, hoping to add *** fountain and *** rose bush for every victim. This donation was left on her doorstep. If all goes as planned, this memorial will be in place by September of this year, marking the 30th anniversary of this horrific crash. In Sacramento, Tana Castro, KCRA 3 reports.

    Sacramento police arrested 36-year-old Balwinder Singh of Yuba City on felony charges, suspecting him of scamming a woman out of her life savings.Last month, KCRA 3 spoke to Rhane Thomas, the victim, who said it started with an email she believed was from PayPal.
