  • Blake Snell on his strong rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, ready to return to Giants

Blake Snell on his strong rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, ready to return to Giants

    [ad_1]

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – Giants starting pitcher Blake Snell talks with reporters following Friday night’s dazzling debut with the River Cats, where he helped Triple-A Sacramento defeat the Oklahoma City Baseball Club 5-1.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner talks about building off of last week’s rehab start with San Jose, how he’s feeling coming off of a left adductor strain, the injury bug biting San Francisco, looking forward to returning to the big leagues and Sutter Health Park as a home for Major League Baseball games next season.

Snell, 31, tossed five scoreless innings on Friday night without allowing a hit. He struck out 10 batters, walked one, a hit batter in the first inning and he threw a wild pitch after getting his signs crossed up with River Cats catcher Jakson Reetz.

Snell’s impressive outing consisted of 60 pitches, 41 of them for strikes, before he left the game in the fifth inning to throw 15 more pitches in Sacramento’s bullpen.

“I’m anxious to get back to the big leagues, but be myself and to be able to help the team out, “Snell said after Friday’s outing. “Early on, I didn’t help the team at all. Didn’t help myself at all. Being able to feel strong, confident and make the pitches I know I can make, I’m really excited about that.”

After signing with the Giants late into Spring Training, Snell is looking to overcome his poor outings with San Francisco before going down with the adductor injury. He went 0-3 in those starts with a dubious 11.57 ERA, allowing 15 runs over 11.2 innings pitched, giving up 18 hits, and recording 12 strikeouts to five walks.

In what figures to be his last test before returning to the Giants, Snell said that he’ll be talking to the organization over the weekend to assess his progress, but he hopes his next start will be with San Francisco.

“We’ll get back tomorrow and talk, and see where to go from there,” Snell said.

    [ad_1]

(FOX40.COM) — A man who was arrested and in the process of being fingerprinted died at the Sacramento County Jail on Sunday morning, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 4:20 a.m., SCSO said a 55-year-old man was brought into custody by another agency, the Sacramento Police Department, for two misdemeanor warrants. Deputies said the man was “medically cleared for incarceration,” but did not specify what he was examined for.

About one hour after the medical examination, deputies said they attempted to fingerprint the man as part of the intake process. While being fingerprinted, the man became unresponsive, according to SCSO.

Deputies said medical staff and first responders attempted first-aid, CPR, and administering Narcan to the man. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead at the jail.

The sheriff’s office said the incident is under internal investigation. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.

California Highway Patrol welcomes over 100 new officers in Sacramento ceremony

    [ad_1]

(FOX40.COM) — The newest members of the California Highway Patrol were recently sworn in during a graduation ceremony at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento.

On Friday, 106 officers were added to the agency as a part of the CHP’s multiyear recruiting campaign to fill 1,000 vacant officer positions.

“These men and women have chosen to dedicate themselves to a career in public service. They have completed several months of rigorous training at the CHP Academy to prepare them to serve the people of California,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “While this job is one of the most difficult things they will do in their entire life, it is also the most rewarding thing that they will do, and we are proud to have them as part of the CHP family.”

The swearing-in ceremony for the new officers marks the completion of a 26-week training at the CHP Academy. Training reportedly consists of “nobility in policing,” leadership, professionalism and ethics, and cultural diversity.

Officials said cadets also receive instruction on mental illness response and crisis intervention techniques. In addition, training covers vehicle patrol, crash investigation, first aid, and the apprehension of suspected violators, and other police-related activity.

The new officers will report to one of the 103 CHP Area offices throughout the state to begin serving the people of California.

Oakland teen rowing team startled by gunfire on Sacramento River

    [ad_1]

Police are investigating after gunshots were fired near a group of teen rowers in the Sacramento area.

The incident happened about two weeks ago on the Sacramento River.

A group of teens with the Oakland Strokes were on the boat at the time of the incident.

East Bay parent Fred Ackerman shared NBC Bay Area the video of the incident from another parent. He said his son was rowing on that boat when the shooting happened.

“To be in that situation and see my child shot at, it’s horrible,” he said. “It’s absolutely horrible and what I experienced pales in comparison to what countless families have experienced.”

Ackerman added the teens on the boat thought it was just a joke and maybe someone had shot a BB gun. But when they looked back at the video and realized those were real gunshots, they became shocked and immediately called police.

Ackerman said it was an incident that made him realize that the U.S. may have a problem with guns.

“For me, it’s pretty clear that our kids are less safe having more guns. As a parent, our number one job is to keep your kids safe,” he said. “So, I’m trying to keep my kids safe, I’m trying to encourage others to really think, how can we keep all of our kids safe?”

    No injuries were reported.

West Sacramento police confirmed with NBC Bay Area on Thursday that they did search the area for any possible suspects and evidence but didn’t find anything.

    The incident is under investigation.

Northern California wind advisory issued for gusts up to 45 mph

    [ad_1]

(FOX40.COM) — A wind advisory for the Sacramento Valley will soon go into effect for gusts that may reach up to 45 mph over the next few days.

The wind advisory begins at 11 p.m. on Tuesday and is expected to end at 8 a.m. on Thursday. North winds are forecast to be 20-30 mph with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Areas affected are the South Sacramento Valley, Central Sacramento Valley, and Delta regions. Areas along Interstate 5 and portions of Interstate 80 and 505 will also be impacted.

“Wednesday will be warmer but it’s windier – not a fun day to be outside because of those gusts,” said FOX40’s chief meteorologist Adam Epstein.

The strongest winds are forecast to be on Tuesday night and going into Wednesday morning with gusts strong enough to cause power outages or blow down tree limbs. The winds can also make driving more difficult for drivers so officials advise commuters to travel with caution.

City, Camp Resolution remain at odds amid new correspondence

    [ad_1]

Advocates for the people living at Sacramento’s Camp Resolution want city leaders to rescind a March letter to the camp’s operator stating that they would be shutting the encampment down. This comes despite word the city planned to ease its efforts to shut down the site.“Today, the City of Sacramento notified Safe Ground Sacramento that it would hold off on the termination if various conditions were met,” a city spokesperson wrote in an online statement Thursday. The statement also included a link to a letter, dated May 2nd, between Assistant City Manager Mario Lara and Safe Ground Sacramento Executive Director Mark Merin. In it, Lara writes “the City is willing to hold in abeyance the requirement to vacate provided that Safe Ground Sacramento brings the property into compliance with the variance issued by the Water Board on Jan. 13, 2022, which allows habitation only in vehicles parked on the paved portion of the site.” Merin told KCRA 3 Thursday evening that while the notice seemed to be a positive development, the letter did not supersede a March letter sent by the city to him stating the occupants of Camp Resolution must be out by mid-May. “They’ve got to go all the way and rescind the notice,” he said. “The lease is extremely important.”The agreement between Safe Ground Sacramento and the city mandates that trailers must be off the ground for people living at the site. The land is approved to be a safe-parking site only due to concerns about soil contamination. Merin said it is his understanding that the crux of the current issue is that some of the camp’s residents are camping on unpaved parts of the property. Jesuit head coach cheers Colts’ first-round selection of Sacramento’s Laiatu Latu in NFL Draft

CARMICHAEL, Calif. (KTXL) – Marauders head football coach Marlon Blanton watches from Jesuit High School as his former student athlete Laiatu Latu is selected 15th overall by the Indianapolis Colts in Thursday’s first round of the NFL Draft.

Blanton talks with FOX40’s Sean Cunningham about how proud he is of his former player, what it means to the school to see him make the NFL and Latu’s Sacramento roots.

Latu, 23, was the first defensive player to be selected in Thursday’s NFL Draft. He was the consensus Associated Press First Team All-American defensive end last year with UCLA, where he led the nation 21.5 tackles for loss.

Latu posted career highs with 49 tackles, 13 sacks and two interceptions last season with the Bruins. He spent two seasons with UCLA, transferring from Washington where his football career nearly came to an end due to a neck injury.

Latu missed the 2020 and 2021 seasons and was medically retired at one point following neck fusion surgery. He returned to action in 2022 when he transferred to UCLA.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound edge rusher was the Bruins first winner of the Lombardi Award last season, which is awarded to the nation’s top defensive lineman in college football.

Sacramento man convicted of four freeway shootings and sentenced to 90 years to be released early

    [ad_1]

(FOX40.COM) — A man who was convicted of four freeway shootings and sentenced to 90 years in prison was approved to be released back into Sacramento County after only serving 14 years.

Kyle Douglas Frank was convicted by a jury for firing several gunshots at cars on four separate occasions in August and September of 2009. His victims were all Black or Hispanic and officials believe his crimes were racially charged.

“He unloaded his gun and put about six bullets in my passenger door, shattered my side view mirror, and all because I looked inside of his car,” said Paul Adcock, a survivor of one of the freeway shootings on I-80 in 2009. “Calling me the N-word and everything else and giving me the finger.”

On April 10, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Board of Parole Hearings granted parole to Frank.

“I thought justice was done, when they said 90-plus years. It hasn’t even been half of that. So why he’s getting out so soon, is beyond me,” Adcock said.

Sacramento County Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Rochelle Beardsley voiced concerns about the possibility of Frank being released from prison.

“It’s our position that he is not eligible or amenable to parole,” Beardsley said. “Public safety is the mandate of the District Attorney’s Office.”

Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho’s office warned the public of Frank’s release.

“Each victim was either Hispanic or African American,” the DA’s office said. “He attempted to murder eight innocent people simply because of their skin color.”

The DA’s office said they asked Governor Gavin Newsom to intervene with the boards decision, but if he doesn’t, Frank will be released back into the Sacramento community.

AND IF YOU WANT TO CHECK OUT THE FULL MOON AT ITS PEAK TONIGHT, IT’S GOING TO BE THE NIGHT TO DO IT. IT OFFICIALLY TECHNICALLY PEAKS TUESDAY AT 4:49 P.M., BUT EXPECT THAT IT WILL BE BRIGHT AND ILLUMINATED IN THAT NIGHT SKY TONIGHT. IT’S KNOWN AS THE. FULL PINK MOON, AND IF YOU ARE AN EARLY RISER, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE WAKING UP RIGHT NOW, ESPECIALLY TOMORROW MORNING BEFORE THE SUN COMES UP, YOU CAN LOOK TO THE EASTERN SKY AND YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE PLANET SATURN AS WELL. SO APRIL SO FAR HAS HAD OF COURSE SOME UPS AND DOWNS TO IT. TEMPERATURES STARTED OUT IN THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH A BIT ABOVE THE AVERAGE IN THE LOW 70S. THEN WE. SAW THAT BIG DROP DOWN WITH THE RAIN FOR THE FIRST WEEKEND OF THE MONTH, AND THEN WE HAD ANOTHER COOLER THAN AVERAGE WEEKEND LAST WEEKEND. AND NOW THIS PAST WEEKEND, WE HAD A VERY WARM ONE AT 85 ON SATURDAY, 88 YESTERDAY AND TODAY. WE’RE GOING TO PRETTY MUCH DO ABOUT THE SAME THING. EXPECT TEMPERATURES FOR THE MORNING. PRETTY PLEASANT, BUT YOU DON’T NEED THAT THICK WINTER JACKET TO TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW 80S BY LUNCHTIME, AND YOUR VALLEY PLANNER EXPECTING HIGHS TO PEAK JUST CLOSE TO THAT 90 DEGREE MARK IN THE FOOTHILLS TODAY, WE’RE LOOKING AT 65 DEGREES BY 9 A.M., HIGHS GETTING INTO THE UPPER 70S, CLOSE TO THE 80 DEGREE MARK, AND A FEW SPOTS. AND IN THE SIERRA, WE’RE LOOKING AT PLENTY OF SUNSHINE. WE’LL GET AWAY FROM THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES OF THE MORNING, GETTING INTO THE UPPER 50S BY LUNCHTIME WITH A HIGH TODAY OF 68 DEGREES. BUT CHANGES WILL SLOWLY UNRAVEL, ESPECIALLY EVEN TONIGHT. THAT ONSHORE BREEZE IS GOING TO RAMP UP. THAT WILL SET THE STAGE FOR A DROP IN TEMPERATURES. ON TUESDAY, AND THERE’S A LITTLE PIECE OF ENERGY JUST OFF THE COAST THAT MAY EVEN BRUSH US WITH A FEW ISOLATED STRAY SHOWERS. FIRST THING TOMORROW MORNING. ASIDE FROM THAT, MOST OF THE REST OF THE WEEK IS ACTUALLY LOOKING DRY. WHEN YOU LOOK AHEAD TO WEDNESDAY. THURSDAY WE MIGHT SEE A COUPLE OF MOUNTAIN SHOWERS POP UP. THEN FRIDAY IS THE DAY THAT WE COULD SEE MORE WIDESPREAD SHOWER CHANCES RETURN, ALONG WITH THE COOLER AIR. AGAIN, YOU’RE GOING TO WATCH EACH DAY IN THE SEVEN DAY AND WATCH THOSE NUMBERS GO DOWN. SO TODAY IS OUR LAST DAY IN THE 80S. WE’RE TALKING MID 70S, WHICH IS AVERAGE. TOMORROW THE BREEZE WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE ON THURSDAY AND WE’RE DROPPING BACK TO UPPER 60S FOR HIGHS ON FRIDAY WITH YES SOME RAIN SHOWERS BACK IN THE FORECAST. WOW. ALL RIGHT LITTLE THIS LITTLE OF THAT TAM SPRING. YEAH. HOW’S TH
