    The Sacramento County Sheriff’s office arrested 27 “sex buyers” on Friday while conducting a human trafficking operation.

    “This particular human trafficking operation we were targeting the buyers,” said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a spokesperson for the office. “They go after the girls, we’re going after them.”

    Gandhi said deputies conducted the undercover operation in the Watt Avenue Corridor.

Amar Gandhi, if the man was charging at the deputies or had intent to harm them. Gandhi said he could not confirm that but he could confirm that the man got within feet of a deputy. The sheriff’s office said rubber bullets were used but not effective. Deputies proceeded to shoot the man several times. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.     (FOX40.COM) — A vehicle collision in Sacramento County prompted the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to close the surrounding areas.

    Around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Caltrans reported that lanes on westbound U.S. 50 near Howe Avenue are blocked because of a traffic collision. Around 10 p.m. the road was reopened.

    State officials have reported that nine people across California died in the biggest storm of the season, a major atmospheric river that left a trail of destruction due to dangerous winds and historic rains.

    Among the deaths, four were killed by fallen trees in Northern California and two died in car wrecks in Southern California, officials said.

    The storm initially whipped into Northern California on Saturday as a bomb cyclone — meaning it rapidly intensified — fueling dangerous winds on top of an already moisture-heavy system. Wind gusts along the Northern and Central California coast exceeded 90 and 100 mph in some areas, as the storm unleashed the beginning of a deluge of rain.

    By Sunday and Monday, the system was walloping Southern California, dumping record-breaking rainfall, causing hundreds of mudslides and debris flows and forcing evacuations and water rescues.

    The storm — fueled by El Niño, human-caused climate change and typical winter weather patterns — resulted in widespread power outages, road closures and flooding.

    Here’s what The Times has been able to confirm about the nine people who died in the storm, in the order they occurred:

    Feb. 1 in San Mateo County

    A man in San Mateo County died Thursday after his vehicle hydroplaned and struck a tree, becoming the first storm-related death, according to Brian Ferguson, a spokesperson for the governor’s Office of Emergency Services. It wasn’t immediately clear if the heavy rain in the area at the time of the accident was brought on by the storm that hit the Northern California coast two days later.

    Feb. 3 in Sacramento County

    A woman in Sacramento County was killed by a fallen tree in her backyard, Ferguson said. Additional details were not immediately available from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

    Feb. 4 in Sutter, Sacramento, and Santa Cruz counties

    Three men were killed by downed trees in Northern California the next day.

    Chad Ensey, 41, of Carmichael suffered blunt-force trauma and died at a hospital after a tree fell on him in his backyard amid strong wind, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

    In the rural Santa Cruz County community of Boulder Creek, Robert Brainard III, 45, was killed when a tree fell on his home, officials there said.

    And in Sutter County, 82-year-old David Gomes was found dead beneath a fallen redwood tree in his backyard, authorities said.

    Feb. 5 in San Bernardino County

    In San Bernardino County, a 69-year-old man died after losing control of his truck in Yucaipa, sending it into an embankment that submerged part of the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. The San Bernardino man was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. His identity wasn’t immediately available.

    Ferguson also confirmed another traffic death in Southern California on this day, but the details weren’t immediately clear.

    Feb. 5 in San Luis Obispo County

    A 90-year-old woman in Los Osos died after the power went out at her home, where she was in hospice care and dependent on oxygen, according to San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s spokesperson Tony Cipolla.

    She called 911 after losing power and medics responded, but she died soon after, Cipolla said. He did not immediately provide her name.

    Feb. 6 in San Diego County

    A person was found dead in the Tijuana River along the Mexico border, according to Mónica Muñoz, a spokesperson for the San Diego Fire Department.

    Firefighters were called to Dairy Mart Road just after 1 a.m. Tuesday after a body was reported floating in the water, Muñoz said. Teams working with U.S. Customs & Border Protection were able to recover the body, but the person was already dead, she said.

    The person has yet to be identified.

    A 53-year-old man and his 10-year-old son were arrested Saturday in Sacramento County after the boy fatally shot another child using a stolen gun he had found in his dad’s car, law enforcement officials said.

    Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 4700 block of Greenholm Drive in Foothill Farms, an unincorporated community about 20 minutes outside downtown Sacramento, just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

    Deputies found a 10-year-old boy who was unresponsive lying in the middle of a parking lot bleeding from his head and neck. The boy, whom police did not publicly identify, later died at a hospital, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

    Witnesses identified those involved in the shooting and directed deputies to a nearby apartment, where they found Arkete Davis and two children, one of whom was his son.

    Authorities said the boy, whom they did not identify by name, had grabbed the gun from his dad’s car while he was retrieving his father’s cigarettes from the vehicle. The boy had “bragged that his father had a gun” before he shot the other child, the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release. It is not clear whether the two children knew each other.

    Detectives found a firearm that had been reported stolen in 2017 in a nearby trashcan where authorities allege Davis attempted to dispose of it. The boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility, authorities said.

    Davis was arrested on suspicion of carrying a stolen loaded firearm in a vehicle, endangering the life of a child, illegally possessing a firearm as a felon, accessory after the fact and criminal storage of a firearm, all felonies, according to law enforcement and jail records. He is being held on $500,000 bail and is expected to appear in court Wednesday, according to jail records.

    CARMICHAEL, Calif. – Bone fragments believed to be from 18th-century composer Ludwig van Beethoven have made their way back to Vienna after living in a locked drawer of a home in Carmichael, California, for the past 30 years.

    Paul Kaufmann’s remarkable journey in taking possession of the curios began in 1990 following the death of his mother.

    She lived in a town in the south of France. After traveling there and going through her belongings, he would find a key — and that key would not only open a safety deposit box, but inside reveal a second box full of mysteries.

    “A black tin container, actually, with a lid, and scratched on the surface … was the name Beethoven,” Kaufmann said.

    Inside, wrapped in tissue, were fragments of a skull thought to belong to one of the greatest composers the world has ever known.

    “Surprise and wonderment. What is this all about?” Kaufmann said.

    For the next 30 years, Kaufmann tried to answer that question.

    He traveled back to the states with the skull in his suitcase and began researching, finding help from top scholars in San Francisco and San Jose.

    “We later learned that the investigators were very excited about it,” Kaufmann said.

    Researchers would find a connection to Kaufmann’s great-great-uncle, a Viennese physician named Dr. Franz Romeo Seligmann, who was also a medical historian and anthropologist.

    Dr. Seligmann apparently received the bone fragments in 1863 after Beethoven’s body was exhumed for research in part to try to learn what made the composer go deaf in one ear.

    But technology of the time was limited and research went cold.

    “And it was then handed down, all these 170 years, to me as the only survivor in the family,” Kaufmann said.

    It was just in the past week Kaufmann traveled to the Medical University of Vienna to return the fragments as a donation.

    They’re now known as the “Seligmann Fragments.”

    “It’s totally exhilarating,” Kaufmann said. “I can look up at the sky and see my mother and all my relatives so happy they’re back to Vienna where they belong.”

    A portion of the bone fragments is also going to a DNA lab for further inspection, but researchers at the Medical University in Vienna already believe it to be authentic.
