All the Best Red Carpet Fashion from the 2024 Venice Film Festival

    [ad_1]

The Venice Film Festival has begun—get ready for 11 days of some of the best red carpet fashion of the year. WireImage

While last year’s Venice Film Festival was a quieter, more subdued occasion than usual due to the SAG-AFTRA and WAG strikes, the 2024 iteration is expected to bring the usual array of A-list filmmakers and celebrities to the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido for a week and a half of premieres, screenings and parties.

Isabelle Huppert is the 2024 jury president, and this year’s cinematic line-up is packed with some of the most anticipated movies of the year. Todd PhillipsJoker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, as is Luca Guadagnino’s Queer (with Daniel Craig and Jason Schwartzman), Pablo Larrain’s Maria (starring Angelina Jolie) and Halina Reijn’s Babygirl (Nicole Kidman), among many others. Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, screened out of competition, will open the festival.

Along with plenty of must-see films, the stars also bring their sartorial best for the glamorous film festival in Venice, Italy, strutting down the red carpet in fashionable designs—this is, after all, the very event that brought us couture moments like Florence Pugh’s dazzling black glitter Valentino ensemble at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere, along with Zendaya’s custom leather Balmain dress in 2021 and Dakota Johnson in bejeweled Gucci.

The 81st annual Venice International Film Festival kicks off on August 28 and runs through September 7, which means a whole lot of high-fashion moments are headed for Lido. Below, see the best red carpet fashion from the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

  • Rebel Wilson’s Memoir to Be Published in U.K. With Sacha Baron Cohen Allegations Redacted

Rebel Wilson’s Memoir to Be Published in U.K. With Sacha Baron Cohen Allegations Redacted

    [ad_1]

Rebel Wilson‘s memoir “Rebel Rising” will be published in the U.K. with redacted passages about her experience working with Sacha Baron Cohen.

“We are publishing every page, but for legal reasons, in the U.K. edition, we are redacting most of one page with some other small redactions and an explanatory note,” publisher HarperCollins told The Guardian in a statement. “Those sections are a very small part of a much bigger story.”

Following the news of the redaction in the U.K. edition, a spokesperson for Baron Cohen told Variety in a statement, “Harper Collins did not fact check this chapter in the book prior to publication and took the sensible but terribly belated step of deleting Rebel Wilson’s defamatory claims once presented with evidence that they were false.”

The statement continued, “Printing falsehoods is against the law in the U.K. and Australia; this is not a ‘peculiarity’ as Ms. Wilson said but a legal principle that has existed for many hundreds of years. This is a clear victory for Sacha Baron Cohen and confirms what we said from the beginning — that this is demonstrably false, in a shameful and failed effort to sell books.”

Variety has reached out to Wilson’s reps for comment.

Last month, Wilson alluded to a “massive a**hole” that’s been attempting to stop her from publishing her memoir; she later revealed that it was Baron Cohen.

In a chapter titled “Sacha Baron Cohen and Other Assholes,” she recounts Baron Cohen’s alleged inappropriate behavior while filming the 2016 action-comedy “The Brothers Grimsby.” Wilson played Dawn Grobham, the girlfriend of Baron Cohen‘s dimwitted character Nobby.

Baron Cohen denied Wilson’s claims about his behavior on the “Brothers Grimsby” set, saying in a statement through a spokesperson, “While we appreciate the importance of speaking out, these demonstrably false claims are directly contradicted by extensive detailed evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage, and eyewitness accounts from those present before, during and after the production of ‘The Brothers Grimsby.’”

  • Rebel Wilson Says Sacha Baron Cohen Is a “Massive Asshole” in New Memoir

Rebel Wilson Says Sacha Baron Cohen Is a “Massive Asshole” in New Memoir

    [ad_1]

Rebel Wilson’s “no asshole policy” apparently extends beyond Cats (2019).  In a recent Instagram story, Wilson shared which heretofore unnamed A-lister and former costar she calls a “massive asshole” in her forthcoming memoir, Rebel Rising: none other than Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen, whom Wilson says has tried to prevent press on her book from coming out.

Per The Guardian, Wilson shared her distaste for the English actor via Instagram in the wee hours of Monday, March 25. “I will not be bullied or silenced by high priced lawyers or PR crisis managers,” read Wilson’s Instagram story. “The “asshole” that I am talking about in ONE CHAPTER of my book is: Sacha Baron Cohen.”

Previously, while promoting Rebel Rising, Wilson teased on Instagram that she once worked with a “massive asshole” in Hollywood, which led the Pitch Perfect star to create what she calls a “no assholes policy.”

“When I first came to Hollywood, people were like, yeah, ‘I have a no asshole policy, means like, yeah, I don’t work with assholes,’” said Wilson on Instagram 10 days ago. “I was like, ‘Oh yeah. I mean, that sounds sensible or logical.’ But then it really sunk in because I worked with a massive asshole and yeah, now I definitely have a no assholes policy.”

She continued to dangle the identity of the alleged asshole on social media “Do you wanna know why I have a ‘no assholes’ policy now with people I work with? …Well, it’s all in the book,” said Wilson in a video posted to the social media platform before the big reveal. She also suggested that the asshole in question was trying to stop her from releasing her memoir, which hits stands on April 2. “He’s trying to stop press coming out about my new book,” she wrote. “But the book WILL come out and you will all know the truth.”

Wilson acted opposite Baron Cohen in the 2016 spy-comedy The Brothers Grimsby (titled simply Grimsby in the UK), which also starred Mark Strong, Gabourey Sidibe, Penélope Cruz, and Cohen’s wife, Isla Fisher. In the film, Baron Cohen and Wilson played husband and wife, Alan “Nobby” Butcher and Dawn Grobham, a dimwitted British couple who share eleven children. The Brothers Grimsby received terrible reviews (it currently holds a 36% on Rotten Tomatoes) and flopped at the box office, earning just $28 million worldwide on a budget of $35 million.

While discussing the movie on the Kyle and Jackie O radio show in Australia, Wilson alleged that Cohen repeatedly urged her to “just go naked” for a scene in the film, and that she told him she would call their shared agent to “tell her how much you are harassing me.” “Every day he’s like, ‘Just go naked, it will be funny. Remember in Borat when I did that naked scene? It was hilarious,’” she said. “On the last day I thought I’d obviously won the argument and he got a body double to do the naked scene.” In that same interview, Wilson also alleged that Cohen asked her to physically violate him for a bit in the film.

“He’s like, ‘Look, I’ll just pull down my pants, you just stick your finger up my butt, it’ll be a really funny bit.’” she said. “You don’t wanna be a diva so I … said I’ll slap you once on the butt and that’s it.”

Cohen previously told The Guardian that he ultimately had a positive experience working on The Brothers Grimsby. “Any flop is difficult. But in retrospect, the experience was fantastic,” he said. “I was on the trajectory of a comedy movie star in Hollywood where you make a certain amount of movies that have to do well at the box office. The great thing about having a complete bomb was being liberated from that.”

A spokesperson for Cohen issued the following statement to Vanity Fair regarding Wilson’s allegations: “While we appreciate the importance of speaking out, these demonstrably false claims are directly contradicted by extensive detailed evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage, and eyewitness accounts from those present before, during and after the production of The Brothers Grimsby.

Rebel Wilson says Sacha Baron Cohen an ‘a–hole,’ trying to block her memoir – National | Globalnews.ca

Actor and comedian Rebel Wilson has been calling out an unnamed Hollywood star in social media posts over the past week, alleging that a “massive a–hole” has been trying to block her memoir Rebel Rising from being published.

Now, she has named that star as Sacha Baron Cohen — the celebrated, yet controversial, comedian behind the Borat and Ali G characters.

Wilson claimed in past social media posts that the star, still unnamed at the time, had been sending her threats because he was the subject of one of the chapters in her memoir.

In a Monday Instagram story, Wilson wrote that she will no longer “be bullied or silenced by high priced lawyers or PR crisis managers.”

“The ‘a–hole’ that I am talking about in ONE CHAPTER of my book is Sacha Baron Cohen.”

Last week, the Pitch Perfect actor posted a cryptic video to her Instagram about how she now refuses to work with “a–holes.”

“When I first came to Hollywood, people were like, yeah, ‘I have a no a–hole policy, means like, yeah, I don’t work with a–holes.’ I was like, ‘Oh yeah. I mean, that sounds sensible and logical. “The chapter on said a–hole is Chapter 23,” Wilson continued, holding up a copy of her memoir Rebel Rising. “That guy was a massive a–hole.”

In an Instagram story that has since expired, Wilson claimed that the star was “trying to stop press coming out about my new book.”

“But the book WILL come out and you will all know the truth.”

Wilson and Baron Cohen worked together on the 2016 film The Brothers Grimsby, which Baron Cohen wrote and starred in. In the film, Wilson and Baron Cohen are partners who share 11 kids. The movie was largely panned by critics and seen as a low point in Baron Cohen’s career.

Wilson was upfront at the time about how much she disliked working with Baron Cohen.

On the Kyle and Jackie O radio show in Australia, she said Baron Cohen was persistent that she appear naked in the film and he eventually hired a body double for her when Wilson refused.

“Every day he’s like, ‘Just go naked, it will be funny. Remember in Borat when I did that naked scene? It was hilarious.’ On the last day I thought I’d obviously won the argument and he got a body double to do the naked scene,” she said.

When it came time to shoot the final scene of the movie, Wilson claimed that Baron Cohen asked her to “stick your finger up my butt.”

Wilson said she pointed out that there was no mention of this in the script but didn’t want to come across as “a diva.”

“I’ll slap you once on the butt and that’s it,” she said, according to the radio interview.

Wilson’s memoir is slated to arrive on April 2.

A representative for Baron Cohen told media outlets that Wilson’s allegations are “demonstrably false.”

“While we appreciate the importance of speaking out, these demonstrably false claims are directly contradicted by extensive detailed evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage, and eyewitness accounts from those present before, during and after the production of The Brothers Grimsby.”

  • Sacha Baron Cohen Will Bring Back Ali G For a New Tour

Sacha Baron Cohen Will Bring Back Ali G For a New Tour

    [ad_1]

Sacha Baron Cohen has a few different major comedy personas, but the one that started it all was Ali G. The Ali G character (who’s in-universe real name is Alistair Leslie Graham) was created as a parody of specific types of youth culture in the U.K. at the time. Despite being around since 1998, the character didn’t really take off in a big way until the early 2000s, after HBO began several seasons of Cohen’s Da Ali G Show — which also featured Cohen’s other famous creations, Borat and Brüno.

Like most of Cohen’s other characters, Ali G’s humor is mostly derived from his interactions with normal people. They’re usually baited into a false sense of security and don’t realize that Ali G is a character. They speak to him as if he was a real person. Ali G was officially retired back in 2007, and did appear in one feature film — 2002’s Ali G Indahouse — although he’s made a handful of appearances since then.

According to a new report, Ali G is about to make a big comeback — although not on film or TV, in part because of the ongoing writers and actors strikes. A source told Variety that: “As a SAG and WGA member he is supporting the ongoing strike alongside his fellow writers and actors.” Instead, Cohen is working on a potential comedy tour where he would perform in character as Ali G.

While Ali G might have been the character that Cohen built his career on, it might be the case that he’s now most well-known for Borat. Obviously, that could change if this upcoming live show is a big hit.

Biden first praised all the honorees as “an incredible group of people.”

“And we the people, we see character. We see Amal Clooney’s husband,” the president cracked.

The tease got laughs, including from the actor himself.

Clooney’s wife, Amal, is a prominent and accomplished human rights attorney.

The quip was a “version of one of Biden’s most well-worn gags,” Mediaite noted.

Biden got serious and praised the two-time Oscar winner for his activism on behalf of 9/11 victims’ families and refugees, and his support for survivors of the 2018 Parkland, Florida, school shooting and their work for gun reform.

“That’s character,” Biden said. “That’s George Clooney.”

Other honorees included singer Amy Grant, singer Gladys Knight, composer Tania Leon and the rock band U2.

The ceremony at the Kennedy Center was highlighted by a routine by Sacha Baron Cohen scorching former President Donald Trump and rapper-turned-vocal Hitler appreciator Ye (formerly known as Kanye West). There was also a public appearance by Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) who was seriously injured in October by a hammer-wielding home invader.
