    If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration centered around current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

    Time and again, Miuccia Prada arrives at fashion month with a wealth of new ideas, both for the family business Prada and the brand she herself created, Miu Miu, in 1993. The fall/winter 2023 season was no different. This time around at Miu Miu, Prada’s collection seemed to zero in on the beauty in imperfection, showcasing models looking intentionally frazzled while dressed in pieces that aren’t usually considered chic or “fashion,” like leggings, sweater sets, and most, significantly, hoodies, which are quickly becoming one of the most talked-about trends of the moment. 

    “Through examination and study, clothes are shifted both in structure and their placement on the body,” a press release from the show reads. “Familiar items—twinsets, knee-length skirts, hooded sweatshirts—move around the figure, afforded different strengths and fragilities through their fabrication.” In more words, Prada was able to breathe new life into pieces that have long been overlooked through high-quality construction, interesting proportions, and intentional styling. 

    As usual, the designer tapped stylist Lotta Volkova to demonstrate the coolest ways to wear the collection’s offerings, putting simple gray hoodies underneath leather and herringbone peacoats and on top of buttoned-up cashmere cardigans and turtlenecks. With them, some models wore soft leggings and sneakers, and others skipped pants altogether, donning just briefs, tights, and open-toe heels for a more lustrous take on the basic layering piece. From the show, one could easily take away that the possibilities are endless when it comes to wearing hooded sweatshirts in 2023. Then again, everything looks better on the runway, especially when it’s located at the beautiful Palais d’Iéna in Paris. Bringing them off the runway and into the real world is the truest test, which is why I decided to tackle the budding hoodie trend for my latest installment of Ways to Wear.

    While the fall collections are usually reserved for thicker, more insulating fabrics like cashmere knits and wooly outerwear, there was one standout theme among the collections this fall/winter 2023 season that went against the grain. Soft, supple, satin proved to have a surprising but significant spot on the runways. The pretty fabric popped up in a myriad ways—from the luxurious satin suits at Fendi to the colorful bright satin separates at Tory Burch—proving that the fabric deserves a spot in our cold-weather wardrobes just as much as it does in our warm-weather ones.

    That said, satin clothing is one trend I personally won’t be waiting another six months to wear.     If you ask anyone who was in attendance, they’ll tell you that the spring/summer 2023 fashion tour felt different from any held in recent years. After smaller shows, laid-back schedules, and virtual presentations spurred by the pandemic, the fashion community finally returned in full swing this September and October, bringing with it a bevy of standout trends that will play a major role in our wardrobes this spring.

    In a democratic turn, many of the trends showcased this season were a continuation of those displayed on the fall runways, ensuring that nothing we just recently splurged on will go to waste. The pretty-things trend we’ve harped about for months continued to reign supreme, as evidenced by the abundance of 3D florets at Loewe and Prada and dainty bows at Chanel. Also carried over from fall were hyper-elevated basics, but this time, designers such as Miuccia Prada and Tory Burch offered up new, reimagined ways to style and layer them. 

    Of course, no fashion season would be complete without a few curveball trends being thrown into the mix. At Prada, co-creative directors Raf Simons and Ms. Prada took everyone by surprise when they brought skinny pants back from fashion purgatory just one year after TikTok officially axed the style. Similarly puzzling is the pants-less trend that Bottega Veneta Creative Director Matthieu Blazy and Victoria Beckham made a convincing case for.

    Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve officially reached my limits with winter. Don’t get me wrong, I love all my cozy winter staples, and I’ve been living for all the trends coming out of F/W 23 collections. But the fatigue is palpable, and I know I’m not the only one experiencing it. This time of year marks when we all collectively begin to count the days until the official start of spring. For many, it’s a time of renewal and a chance to reset everything, including how you dress.

    While shedding a few layers is always exciting, there can be some trepidation about the shift into a new season. One can feel the added pressure to splurge on new clothing or to don recent trends when emerging back out outside. But in this economy, dropping an entire check on new clothing is exactly reasonable. So, what’s an alternative to making your wardrobe feel fresh without spending a fortune on new clothing? The solution is jewelry. 

    Accessories have always been the easiest way to freshen up any staples in your closet. There’s no shortage of accessories you can add to the mix to make your wardrobe feel current (e.g., hats and bags), but my favorite is jewelry.     Fashion month might be a regularly scheduled biannual event, but the timing never fails to surprise me. It creeps up on me slowly and all at once, and before I know it, I’m in the thick of it. So you can imagine my surprise when I realized that London Fashion Week had already come and gone. And with it came a strikingly cohesive message from the designers who showcased their collections there. Their designs represented the fact that a new era for Britain has arrived.

    Last season, London Fashion Week attendees were left in a state of shock upon the realization that the queen had passed just days before the events. Celebrations were halted, and runway shows continued on paying homage to the queen. After many “changing of the guards” later, we’ve reached the first fashion week hosted by London since.

    A show that truly marks the change that has happened in London since last fashion week was none other than Burberry. The announcement of Daniel Lee’s departure from Bottega Veneta and arrival at Burberry left everyone waiting to see what he would do. His work sent a clear message. The designs mirrored traditional British emblems but with an update—think head-to-toe plaid, oversize fur hats that resemble those of the queen’s guard, and traditional tailoring paired with graphic T-shirts. 

    The 2023 update on the traditional British wardrobe sounds exactly like what I would like to be wearing this upcoming fall and winter. One thing that LFW designers had this season was fun. Below, find the seven trends they showcased that are guaranteed to take over next fall.

    For some, February marks the last stretch of winter. Spring is on the horizon, and with that leap forward comes the prospect of new trends and warmer temperatures. But if you can believe it, fashion veterans aren’t thinking about spring; they’re thinking even further ahead to next fall. We don’t prefer winter as much, as it’s the beginning of fashion month when designers worldwide show their fall/winter collections. While there’s no telling what trends will take off, following the runways can give clues about what’s coming. It’s why as editors, we spend the entire month devouring lookbooks, staring at street-style images, and running from show to show in Copenhagen and New York in search of what’s next. And while we’re still in the throws of fashion month (Paris and Milan’s fashion weeks are still to come), I feel one week has already set the tone for the season: menswear week. 

    Admittedly, as a fashion editor primarily covering womenswear, following menswear week wasn’t always my top priority. But, as collections were released and two other cities’ fashion weeks concluded (and London is happening now), I’ve found that I can not stop thinking about menswear week. For me, it felt like designers were able to capture what many brands have failed to do as of late: meld function and fashion in a forward-thinking way. It wasn’t about sending oversized t-shirts down the runway and claiming they’re “androgynous” but instead using tailoring, styling, and accessories to push the envelope.

    The looks spotted in menswear collections, in my mind, will set the tone for the rest of the year. And to prove that point, I’ve rounded up eight trends from the Fall/Winter 2023 menswear collections worth knowing about and shopped them out in both departments.     For the second season running, Tory Burch’s New York Fashion Week show has been one of if not *the* most talked-about of all. Burch’s S/S 23 collection shocked attendees who thought they knew the Tory Burch look, with its unique color and fabric pairings, unexpected styling, and hyper-elevated overall aesthetic. For F/W 23, the buzz around NYFW was all about whether or not her next offering would live up to the hype created six months prior. And now that we’ve all had time to ruminate on all 36 looks, the results are in. She not only succeeded in meeting our high expectations; she exceeded them. 

    Though I could write an entire dissertation about the strength of Burch’s fall collection, I’ve decided to instead keep things short and sweet by zeroing in on one item included in almost every look that had my fellow editors and I heading straight for the Nordstrom app to get in on the trend. If you don’t already know, I’m talking about fishnet tights, which Burch styled with flats, heels, and boots throughout the show. Once considered anti-chic in fashion circles, the holy hosiery is officially back in our good graces.     If you’ve never experienced New York Fashion Week from start to finish, it’s hard to describe the sort of beautiful chaos that ensues season after season. Without a doubt, the weeklong saga is one of the most rewarding of the year for people who, like me, prioritize fashion above all else. That being said, it’s also the busiest, with prep starting far in advance and work lasting from sunrise to sunset (and then some) for a majority of attendees. By the time the last finale of the week commences, there’s usually a synchronized sigh of relief, quickly followed by the realization that you’re already late for the airport, off to London to do it all over again.

    Fashion can sometimes feel reductive and repetitive, or at least that’s the perspective one can come to hold after years of following the industry. It can be easy to fall into a sartorial inspiration dry spell when the trends begin to feel repetitive, the production cycle is far too fast to keep up with, and the brands feel inauthentic to their identity. All of this is to say that when you stumble upon something that feels new, it’s like a reawakening of one’s entire perspective. 

    And that’s very much the case, for me at least, when it comes to Copenhagen fashion week. While it’s a privilege to attend and report on shows in general, something about being able to travel with CIFF to attend the fall/winter 2023 shows in this Danish capital was something else entirely. It opened up the world to me, quite literally. With that opening, I discovered new brands, spotted street style trends, and experienced firsthand why Copenhagen has become the world’s coolest fashion capital. 

    That newly minted status very much has to do with the fact that some of the buzziest brands in the industry are coming from this Danish capital. But it also relates to the Scandi set’s renewed approach to clothing. From choosing to produce in a more sustainable way to creating trend-forward pieces that can transcend time to staying true to their brand’s aesthetic, this community has changed the way, we look at fashion.     Kaia & Cindy, Skinny Jeans, and The Strokes—a Play-By-Play of Celine’s L.A. Show

    So much happened last night at Celine’s Los Angeles show that I couldn’t possibly fit everything into one headline. The Parisian brand staged a full fashion experience at The Wiltern, an art deco landmark, where A-listers, rock stars, and stylish people of all stripes converged for an insanely fun night. For starters, the guest list included Cindy Crawford, Paris Hilton, Brie Larson, Kid Cudi, Miles Teller, Emma Chamberlain, Wiz Khalifa, and many others. Oh, and none other than Kaia Gerber, who walked the runway.  

    As for the runway looks, Hedi Slimane presented a smattering of 2000s-era trends—I’m talking skinny jeans, thin scarves, fringed boots, low-rise belts, tote bags, and several other trends that 2005 Kate Moss would have gone absolutely mad for. As they say, what’s old is new again! Last but not least, performances from Iggy Pop, The Strokes, Interpol, and The Kills capped off the night.
